Not to mention fat could actually help you lose weight. A low-carb diet trumps a low-fat diet when it comes to weight loss. The low-carb dieters in a study lost an extra 8 pounds over the course of 12 months even though the two groups stuck to a similar number of calories.
2.       Bad Advice: Indulge In a Cheat Day Once a Week
Why it’s wrong: Eating healthy six days a week and then digging into what you’ve been missing on day seven is a pretty common dieting practice. But in reality, the plan could undermine your weight-loss efforts altogether. This idea sets up negative feelings about food and health in one’s mind. This way of thinking also suggests the diet is temporary rather than a lifestyle you can stick to for the long haul; instead treat yourself in moderation each day.

While you probably will feel better and more energized if you spread three meals throughout the day and sprinkle in a couple snacks to curb a growling stomach, for normal, healthy individuals without medical conditions, there is no need to force yourself to eat six meals per day.

Why it’s wrong: You don’t need to drink disgusting juice for a week and suffer through headaches and hunger to detox. Our bodies are innately designed to detox-that’s what the liver is for. Plus, sipping your meals for a week means you’ll miss out on protein, and your body will start to break down muscle tissue.
7.       Bad Advice: Eat Whatever You Want-So Long As You Exercise
Why it’s wrong: We all want a free pass to indulge, but spending 45 minutes on the elliptical isn’t going to cut it. When it comes to weight loss, diet is king. When looked at, diet, exercise, or diet plus exercise had the greatest long-term effect on your health. Turns out, diet was a much more effective way to lose weight and fat than exercise alone, though diet plus exercise was even better. Unfortunately, most people and exercise machines overestimate the number of calories burned during a workout, which gives people a false sense of ‘I can eat anything’ which can actually lead to weight gain.

Before you get started, you should know a few things about what you can expect juicing to do for you, and what's just hype.

“If you’re not big into fruits and vegetables, it’s a good way to get them in," says nutritionist Jennifer Barr, RD, of Wilmington, DE. You should still eat fruits and vegetables, too, says Manuel Villacorta, RD, founder of Eating Free, a weight management program.
Aim to eat two whole fruits and three to four vegetables a day. Choose them in different colors, so you get a good mix of vitamins and minerals, Barr says.
Fiber Factor
When you juice, you don't get the fiber that's in whole fruits and vegetables. Juicing machines extract the juice and leave behind the pulp, which has fiber.
So you don't miss out on the fiber, you can add some of the pulp back into the juice or use it in cooking.

Do You Need a Juicing Machine?
Juicers can be expensive, ranging from $50 to $400. Some more expensive juicers will break down a lot of the fruit by grinding the core, rind, and seeds, Barr says.
You may not need a juicing machine to make juice. You can use a blender for most whole fruits or vegetables to keep the fiber. Add water if it becomes too thick, Villacorta says. You’ll want to remove seeds and rinds, and some skins.
Once your juice is ready, it's best to drink it the same day you make it, for food safety. Wash your blender or juice machine thoroughly, so it's ready for your next batch.
Watch the Calories
How many calories are in your juice? That depends on what's in it. "You could be taking up to four fruits, and now the calories start adding up. If you use vegetables to juice, the calories are a lot less. If they use mainly vegetables, add an apple or kiwi for flavor. Calories are a concern if it’s pure fruit juice," Villacorta says.
You can make your juice more balanced by adding protein. Some good sources are almond milk, Greek yogurt, flaxseed, and peanut butter.
Juicing for Weight Loss and Cleansing
Juicing might seem like a simple way to lose weight, but it can backfire. On a juice-only diet, you may not get enough fiber or protein to make you full. You might rebel.
“If you’re doing a juicing diet, you’ll be so tempted to eat something like a cake or doughnut because you’ve restricted yourself,” Barr says. Not getting enough protein could also mean you lose muscle mass. The bottom line: It's too extreme, and the results aren't likely to last. What about juicing as a way to detox or cleanse your body? “I haven’t seen any research or science paper to support that cleansing is happening from juicing,” Villacorta says.
Your liver and kidneys take care of that -- whether you're juicing or not.
Other Health Claims
As for other health claims, it's true that eating a plant-based diet is linked to lower risk of heart disease or cancer. But there hasn't been a lot of research done that's specific to juicing.
There is some research on juicing and the immune system. But any immune system benefits probably come from eating fruits and vegetables, whether it's in juice or not, Barr says.
If You're Taking Prescription Drugs
Check with your doctor before doing a lot of juicing, so you can avoid any potential problems.
For instance, large amounts of foods high in vitamin K, such as kale and spinach, may change how the blood thinner warfarin works.

The alcoholic will begin to avoid social gatherings because they cannot control their drinking, which can lead to embarrassment, harassment, or altercations.

Custody battles, driving under the influence of alcohol potentially resulting in a DUI/DWI or a car accident, or other legal problems can result.
Increasing negative consequences
As excessive drinking escalates, repercussions begin to mount. These might include problems functioning satisfactorily on the job due to being hung over or reduced cognitive functioning, financial problems due to spending on booze or not paying bills on time, and other adverse effects caused by neglecting responsibilities.

That’s a long way to say that, when it comes to detoxing, the best advice is to listen to your body. “Our bodies speak to us all the time,” says Laird. “It’s risky to override those signals of what our body is telling us is true.”

Dr. Group’s Ketogenic Fast for Rapid Weight Loss
Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the best ways to support your overall health. Excess body fat increases your susceptibility to serious conditions like type II diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, fatty liver, cancer, and joint problems.[1] Many fat-loss fads, diets, and pills come and go, and very few yield lasting results. One method of losing fat that’s tried, tested, and consistently proven effective is adopting a ketogenic diet.
Knowing this, I began my research into improving the typical ketogenic diet. People who are familiar with my work know that I’m always trying new cleanses, detoxing programs, and diet plans in my ongoing quest to discover new ways to improve my health. I kept coming across the many benefits of different types fasting, and I thought “why not combine the two to get the best of both worlds?”
What Is a Ketogenic Diet?
A ketogenic diet is a diet that provides fat and protein, but little or no carbohydrates. Your body prefers glucose and glycogen, both derived from carbohydrates, as its primary fuel source. The sugar-burning state, called glycolysis, is standard operating procedure for the human body. Depriving the body of carbohydrates, however, forces it to use stored fat for energy. This special fat-burning mode, known as ketosis, is incredibly effective at burning through fat reserves. The catch? The body greatly prefers carbohydrates. It sends orders to your brain to refuel on carbs when your blood sugar dips. This physiological response makes it a tremendous challenge for many people to adhere to a low-carb diet long enough for their body to enter ketosis. It takes about 24-36 hours to completely burn through the stored chains of sugar in your muscles and liver, called glycogen, and the sugar circulating in your blood.
Why a Ketogenic Fast?
The reasoning behind adopting a ketogenic diet is strong, especially if you’re resistant to the effects of insulin. Sugar provokes a much stronger release of insulin than fat, but fat still triggers insulin release, though to a smaller degree. A ketogenic diet sparks the fat-burning process, but fasting ignites it.
During fasting, blood sugar levels remain stable while insulin levels drop. With a straight ketogenic diet, you’re still signaling insulin release, signaling your cells to store energy. With daily fasting, you transition to burning rather than storing energy. The low insulin levels that result from fasting prompt the breakdown of fat, a phenomenon called lipolysis.
Understanding how these two methods of fat loss can work in tandem lead me to develop my 5-day, vegan ketogenic fast. It combines the incredible benefits of intermittent fasting with a ketogenic diet, generating exponentially better results than using either independently.
What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Fasting has a negative connotation for some. Many people think of it as intentionally starving, but fasting is not starving—it’s committing to eating on a regimented schedule. There are many different types of fasting. True, or absolute, fasting is the practice of abstaining from eating and drinking for a set period. Water or juice fasting allows for the consumption of certain fluids during the fast.
Intermittent fasting simply means avoiding food for longer stretches of time than usual, something like 12 or more hours. After this period, the participant can eat as they normally would. You probably accidentally do this a few times a week if you skip breakfast or can’t fit lunch into your schedule.
The physiological benefits of intermittent fasting include increased metabolism, stable blood sugar, decreased blood pressure, and slowed aging over time.

This fast goes one step further than other ketogenic diets by taking advantage of the beneficial effects of (daily) intermittent fasting on overall wellness and longevity.[2]
This ketogenic diet is different from others because it does not include any animal products. Rather, I’ve constructed the diet to include nuts and fatty fruits like olives, coconuts, and avocados which are full of healthy fatty acids, fiber, micronutrients, and phytonutrients.
I experimented with this diet myself to see how it would affect me to give you some insight into how your body might react.
Major Benefits of a Vegan Ketogenic Fast
Many ketogenic diets advocate consuming animal-based fat. The problem, however, is that a diet rich in animal products increases your risk of developing health problems like kidney stones, diet-related cancers, heart disease, vascular issues, and dying from cancer or cardiovascular diseases.[3][4] Conversely, a low-carb, plant-based diet coincides with lower, overall mortality rates.[2] Applying a vegan-oriented approach allows for all of the benefits without any of those downsides.
A ketogenic fast accelerates fat-burning and activates your body’s innate ability to rid itself of toxins. Many of the worst toxins are stored in fat cells. When your body starts burning through your fat reserves, toxins are released and prompt detoxification at the cellular level.
One of the most powerful benefits is how your brain responds. Studies have found that people on ketogenic diets experience better, more stable moods.[5] Continuing your fast past five days may enhance the effect; some individuals feel profoundly happy, peaceful, and at ease[6] from days six through nine on a fast. If you can make it and you have the extra fat stores, you may continue for up to 21 days.
Recent findings from animal studies also indicate that fasting may target leukemia cells. More research is needed before human clinical trials can begin, but the initial results are promising.[7] Another study found that a protein that’s upregulated by fasting may help resist cancer development by promoting normal cell division.[8]
The following is an account of my personal experience with the 5-day, vegan ketogenic fast.
Day 1
I started the day with 3 ounces of nuts and my standard supplement routine at 6:30 AM. Around noon, I had one tablespoon of coconut oil as my lunch. Between 2-3 PM, I felt hunger pangs, which I expected. At that point, my body was still running on my glycogen stores and telling me to eat carbohydrates. For dinner, I ate the avocado and six olives for dinner.
  Day 2
I weighed myself when I awoke and was astounded to discover I was nearly 9 pounds lighter in just 24 hours! I know this was mostly water weight, but it’s remarkable to see such an incredible drop in weight. Overall, I felt more energetic than I did yesterday, and I was decidedly less hungry than Day 1. My morning workout was great—I felt like I had the energy to continue for another hour.
I kept the same diet schedule as day 1. I was still hungry after the tablespoon of coconut oil for lunch, but the sensation was less intense. Water with a shot of apple cider vinegar eased the hunger pangs. Later in the evening, I tried my first ketone test strip, and I was indeed in ketosis—the fat-burning state.
  Day 3
This was my worst morning yet. My morning workout did not go as well as I hoped. I felt disoriented and disconnected. I noticed my thinking wasn’t as clear or sharp as normal. I stuck with the same diet schedule; I didn’t experience any hunger, but I did feel somewhat shaky.
I began feeling better as the day wore on. I did experience minor hunger pangs around 2:30 PM that lingered until my avocado dinner. As evening came, I found myself in a much better state and mood.
  Day 4
The morning of day 4 was like waking up from a dream. I felt incredibly energized and alert. The brain fog and weakness from day 3 was entirely gone. The real breakthrough was the mental clarity. I didn’t experience any hunger, but I switched up the eating schedule and had avocado and olives as my lunch. It felt like the right decision. My body needed the larger meal to keep me sustained through the rest of the work day.
  Day 5
I felt even better on day 5. My energy levels were high and I didn’t experience any hunger. My mood was elevated and my mind was focused. I felt like I could sustain this diet for longer.
  Getting Started with Dr. Group’s 5-Day Vegan Ketogenic Fast
It’s easy to get started with my 5-day, vegan ketogenic fast. It just requires just a few supplies. First, you need ketone test strips. Ketone test strips are dipped into urine to measure how many millimoles of ketones are present in the urine (which will require you to catch your urine in a cup). They are readily available online and easy to use. The average reading should be about 4-6 millimoles (mM), but you may see readings as high as 8 mM. Additionally, they’re color coded. Darker readings indicate you’re burning more fat. You’ll need enough strips to test your urine twice a day for the duration of the fast.
You’ll also need to the nuts described in the diet below. I recommend dividing them into 1-ounce servings before beginning to remove the guesswork and reduce temptation. For the olives, I recommend whole (not pitted) kalamata olives because they’re brimming with antioxidants. Make sure everything is organic and minimally processed.

I’ve outlined the meal structure according to my preference but you can adjust the meal order to suit your needs. You’ll only eat over the course of 12 hours. I recommend starting at 6 AM and finishing your last meal around 6 PM unless you’re able to start breakfast later. If you can wait to eat, you’ll adhere to a more strict intermittent fast schedule. Use a ketone strip when you first wake up and just before going to bed.

Tips and Things To Know

Maintaining Your Progress
One of best ways to maintain your progress is to make sure you have the best microbiome for your body. Health begins in the gut, and a chaotic microbiome that doesn’t work with you works against you. Why Do Alcoholics Not Eat Food?
Those who enjoy a nice glass of wine with a meal find that the pairing elevates the dining experience. While this is often true, there is a tipping point that can be reached when someone’s drinking surpasses that of the occasional glass of wine, resulting in an alcohol use disorder. One of the manifestations of regular heavy alcohol consumption is its negative effect on appetite.
It is a quandary: Why do alcoholics not eat food? What is it about the substance abuse that leads to loss of appetite? There are actually a couple of explanations for the effects of alcoholism on appetite and dietary intake. Let’s explore them:
Alcoholics choose the alcohol over food. For someone who has become addicted to alcohol, the priority has shifted in favor of the alcohol. This can result in the alcoholic making more of an effort to acquire and consume alcoholic beverages rather than paying heed to their nutritional needs. This can result when malnourishment sets in, which can reduce the body’s insulin production. Alcoholic ketoacidosis is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate attention. Symptoms include fatigue, slow movement, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, irregular breathing, dizziness, thirst, and lightheadedness.
End stage alcoholism and liver disease. When alcoholism is allowed to progress serious health conditions will emerge, including alcoholic liver disease. Symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, edema, fever, itchy skin, weakness, fluid in the abdomen, and blood in vomit and stools. The only chance at a cure from cirrhosis is abstinence in combination with medication and lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking.
Nutritional Deficiencies Caused by Alcoholism
It is common for someone seeking treatment for an alcohol use disorder to arrive at rehab with some serious health issues. These are the result of the disruption of body systems due to the chronic misuse of alcohol, and ignoring one’s overall nutritional needs. The body uses a certain amount of nutrients just to metabolize the alcohol. If the body’s supply of these nutrients is not replenished through diet, the body cells become deprived of essential nutrients. In addition, alcohol inhibits the breakdown of nutrients into usable molecules as the pancreas becomes less efficient. As a result of these issues, body functions and overall health suffer.

Blackouts.  Blackouts occur when drinking large amounts of alcohol leads to loss of memory of certain events, places they went, or things they did or said while intoxicated.
Increased tolerance.  A problem drinker will notice that they are incrementally drinking more alcohol to get the desired effect of the alcohol. Increased levels of alcohol consumption only make them more dependent on it in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Lying about your drinking.  Lying to cover up excessive drinking or hiding alcohol around the house, in the car, or at work.
Troubled relationships.  Excessive drinking can take a toll on relationships with a spouse, children, friends, and coworkers because the drinking takes precedence over them. Mood swings, irritability, and anger are also common in those with an AUD.
Avoiding social gatherings. The alcoholic will begin to avoid social gatherings because they cannot control their drinking, which can lead to embarrassment, harassment, or altercations.
Legal problems. Custody battles, driving under the influence of alcohol potentially resulting in a DUI/DWI or a car accident, or other legal problems can result.
Increasing negative consequences.  As excessive drinking escalates, repercussions begin to mount. These might include problems functioning satisfactorily on the job due to being hung over or reduced cognitive functioning, financial problems due to spending on booze or not paying bills on time, and other adverse effects caused by neglecting responsibilities.
Increase in alcohol cravings.  As alcoholism becomes more severe, the brain and nervous system adjust to the constant influx of alcohol. This leads to increased alcohol cravings during periods when one is not drinking.
Withdrawal symptoms.  The most glaring sign of alcoholism are the withdrawal symptoms that emerge when attempting to not drink. These symptoms include hand tremors, nausea and vomiting, irritability, insomnia, confusion, headache, and anxiety. In addition, physical signs of alcoholism include facial bloating, a ruddy complexion, abdominal distention due to ascites, fatigue, blood-shot eyes, and thinning hair.
Getting Help for Alcoholism
Treatment for alcoholism is centered on making significant changes in the way one responds to stressors or triggers. To achieve this, there are several treatment elements that are designed to work together. These include:
Medical Detox. The first necessary step to beating alcoholism is to undergo a complete detoxification under medical supervision. A medical detox is needed due to potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms that can emerge unexpectedly.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. After detox is completed, active treatment begins. Depending on the severity of the addiction, the individual can opt for either outpatient treatment or inpatient treatment, lasting one to twelve months duration. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps to change the addictive behaviors that are etched into the brain and psyche by replacing them with new productive thought and behavior responses. CBT trains the client to identify how the maladaptive drinking behavior was a response to disordered or distorted thinking. CBT then teaches clients how replace them with positive, constructing thought and behavior patterns.
Group therapy. Meeting in small groups with a therapist allows for open discussion and sharing. These sessions can assist participants to learn new coping skills, such as stress management, emotion regulation, improve family-related issues, and communication skills.
Restoring Health in Recovery
Restoring physical health is essential for a successful recovery outcome. The nutritionally depleted brain and body need to be cared for through a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and getting quality sleep.
Design a diet high in lean proteins, fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grain bread and pastas, nuts and seeds, and lots of water.
