I'm watching Guardian right now but the god awful CGI is making me laugh during serious moments. help.

legit reaction tho, almost all the CGI is truly hilaribad, especially during the first few episodes (that whole water demon/spirit thing? wow. just…wow) (and chu shuzhi's puppet ksdhfksfd whyyyyyyy)

BUT. here's the thing about guardian: 1) try to think of its kitsch as a feature, not a bug. just go with it, lean fully into all of the cringe. shen wei's dorkiness. dixingren being meteor-mutated aliens imprisoned underground. snake lady. talking cat. zhao yunlan's terrible hair (that at least will change). just EMBRACE it. that way when the very sharp knives suddenly come out and start flashing, in classic cdrama style, you will be completely taken aback and gasp in shock, and, not long thereafter, begin to weep and not stop until 3 days after you've seen the last episode. because, if you truly accept the initial lunacy of guardian, eventually it WILL gut you like a wriggling fish.

also 2) it's much easier to accept the rocky production values if you make mental allowances for how the company went utterly bankrupt midway through filming; the only reason guardian ever got finished AT ALL was that the cast and crew basically decided to work for free on an insanely accelerated schedule, during which all the actors are having to wear their own clothes. (fortunately for zhu yilong he had kept a bunch of pieces from modeling shoots, so he's able to fabricate some kind of more or less consistent Look for shen wei—like the painted-on blue suit with its inexplicable ass chain. mad drip.)

like. everyone knows this already so i'm sure you do too but there's a reason they have one (1) good piece of music (the opening song) and that's about it: they just flat ran out of money. this had some good results (we never have to see chu-ge's puppet again) and some not so great ones (i won't spoil you but let's just say it involves internal organs). ultimately, guardian only knows how to do three things but it does those superbly well: a) zhu yilong and bai yu staring at each other with ravenous desperation, like they're gonna die if they can't breathe the same air forever, b) a time-loop script that really comes through in the back half, and c) related to both of these, an ending that WILL make you throw objects around your home and then immediately read the novel/a bunch of fanfic. the good news is it's an amazing novel (though very different) and the fanfic is sine qua non. (also you get two ships for the price of one so don't sleep on chuguo.)

these are my 7 am thoughts on guardian. i wasn't sold on it at all until about a third of the way through but by then i was clutching it to my face sobbing and begging it to never end. guardian is weird like that—either you're gonna fall for it so hard it will change your entire media life (the way btvs or x-files did for fans in the 1990s) or you'll wind up dropping it. which is fine! for brilliant cgi you can watch like, idk. the expanse or something. (and fwiw i laugh at serious moments ALL THE TIME, my film students really hate it. i feel like it's a gen x coping strategy but they're alpha and very Earnest and Sincere.)

tldr watch guardian at least until you get to the kitchen scene before you decide. then you'll know if it's right for you. love you madly!! <3

Anyway, I drew Nightmare in the Red Death Outfit from the Masquerade scene, and ohhhhhh, I love ittttt. Yet another outfit that the movie didn't do justice, seeing it on stage was fantastic!! And it's actually a reference to another book called "The Masquerade of the Red Death" and it is essentially a huge FU to everyone at the party.

I'm gonna say it againnn anyone who's a fan of the movie should listen to the 25th anniversary sound track, my poor gf has had to listen to me rambling about it lol.

okay i'm gonna lead out the gate and say that I'm really going to be nitpicking and comparing this episode to the game in ways that are certainly not fair but also. that's just my vibe. in the greater context of the show i think this episode makes a lot of sense but also feels like the culmination of all the choices i don't agree with! so, this is probably a bit too much of a hater post but I'm eager to discuss if you'd like. let's get to it.

EPISODE 6: THE PRICE

GOOD -the legos are cute i guess. i too would be looking for legos in the apocalypse -seth being a cop is funny and also fitting. -this is mostly actually going to be in the iffy/bad section but in theory joel making the guitar for her is nice (however...we'll return to this) -i was wondering if we'd get a burn backstory (me and the rest of the freaks over on ao3 have written this scene a million times and i never not one single time read one where she pushes herself against a hot pot. we all used bleach! also why the fuck did she do this on her birthday) (i did like that tommy was the one who brought her home though) -is it a bow and arrow? is it water guns? oh ellie honey i wish it was. nice easter egg wish you guys just gave us those things -ellie being a shit about jesse and the sex talk to joel was funny -the space part of the museum looked reallllllly nice, the layout, the diorama, the helmets and capsule etc. -the walkman is nice except that we have not seen it since season 1 so like. way to bring that back! sorry this is the good section. i think the apollo tape and the way she has an immersive daydream was really nice -- one of my favorite parts of the game with that piece of score, too. -dragging eugene's body the same way they drag joel's did make me go jesus christ -but god damn if i don't love little sadie and ecstacy. any chance to hear those damn songs -interesting how joel is getting all of his affairs in order the night before he dies -- maria apologizing and making sure he knows he's family, obviously this scene with ellie which i will get to. i guess i like the tragedy of it? but also it feels a little lazy sorry sorry i know this is the good section -stg he better be strumming helplessly hoping or am i projecting -despite the fact that i have beef with literally everything else i like that we end the episode with her going back to the theater. i wish we had seen her hands shake or some blood or some sort of indication of how she's affected but whatever

IFFY (i want to start this off and say that i think iffy/bad are pretty on par for this episode so get ready for the critical downer vibes) -the cold open. bro. i don't like it. austin 1983 and joel has a deadbeat cop dad. okay! (hiiiii tony dalton, nice to see you outside of the mcu). i just cannot figure out what the fuck the point of this scene is. abuse begest abuse? the cycle of violence? if you have the option to do the worst thing but don't then you're better than the worst thing? framing joel's father as a figure who teaches him to lie, to take pain, to tough it up for the sake of others, also to feel shame? i mean, basically joel is a liar out of necessity, so are we meant to think he's now just a compulsive liar? and this sort of backstory for joel comes too late. he is DEAD. and it's not even about tommy! so what is the point! also. why the fuuuuck does he wear his dad's watch. literally why. why why why why why whyyyyyyy did we make that a throughline. DID I HALLUCINATE THIS YOU GUYS I FEEL CRAZY CAUSE WHY DID THEY DO THIS maybe this should have been in the bad part -two people in the intro was stupid sorry like he's dead HES DEAD -i feel like the physical intimacy of this scene after ellie gets burned and is on painkillers is not earned. a baby girl, a kiss on her head, the embrace. based on every other interaction they have i do not buy that they have any sort of familiarity with each other like this? like, i get that it's nice, but to me it feels like they're square pegs in round holes of father/daughter here -ellie eating the cake with her hands was funny but again with this immaturity my GOD -pedro was not kidding when he said he can't sing! nbd but also those did not look like his hands lol -when he went i understand about her arm was he like. i get why you'd hurt yourself? i get why you want to hide it? are we talking about self harm? what are we talking about -i am selfish and i miss the dinosaur part of the museum, okay? i miss it. i miss the dialogue, i miss the way ellie learns things, i miss it -ellie not rattling off space facts...we know she knows them. she said some to dina last episode! my continued beef with the way ellie is written -- impulsive, uncurious, immature. where is her brain where is her soul why is she BORING AND DUMB. WHERE IS SALLY FUCKING RIDE -the fireflies -- i think that ellie was stopping to look at them? i mean, this is a callback to the first game and also meant to sum up what happens in the latter half of the birthday flashback -- ellie thinking about the fireflies. but like, it was so fast and i feel like this keeps happening. there are short references to things that matter but you won't catch them unless you know what's coming.

Thinking of writing a Rain Code Peggy Sue/Swap AU. As in, at the end of the final Labyrinth, something happens that resets the timeline to the beginning of Chapter 0 as well as swaps everyone’s roles, and Yuma and Shinigami are the only ones who remember the original timeline.

A few fun ideas for this:

Shinigami

“Human” name is Shini Requiem (as borrowed from another trainee detective that’s never mentioned in the true story, so the real Yuma never appears here)

The other detectives just assume the reason why she’s… like that is because the supposed amnesia just made her weird

Still doesn’t stop her from being fairly competent at times, though, so they don’t really complain (if only they knew 60% of her competence is just advice given to her by a reluctant death god…)

REALLY having a bad time figuring out how to do human things like eating, and sleeping, and breathing

As a result has absolutely no internal clock, either staying awake when she wants to fall asleep or falling asleep when she needs to stay awake

She also has to do things like breathe and blink manually until her subconscious figures out it has to do those things itself, which takes about like a day

She’s an absolute MASTER in Mystery Labyrinths, though, for understandable reasons

(which is even more impressive given the fact that personality swapping means that the mysteries are fairly different now, and even if they weren’t, it’s not like she can remember all the details of all the cases)

Is still brooding over the fact that her tits mysteriously disappeared when she became a human: combine that with the height difference, and she basically looks like an overly sassy little girl

(“NOW I’M THE FLAT-CHESTED UGGO! WHYYYYYYY?!”)

Has no problem walking but can’t really run since she’s used to just floating

Actually isn’t as mean to other people as she is in the main game

(which is absolutely NOT because her usual personality is just a defense mechanism since anyone in their right mind would be terrified of a goddess of death, and even her masters would probably despise her because no god should be that incompetent: so if they’re going to hate her, it should at least be because of something she can control, right?)

Yuma

Ghost form just looks like Shinigami’s but slimmer, blue, and with curved horns

Human form is a fancier version of his typical outfit except a foot or so taller with a crown, the aforementioned horns, and two demonic wings that he still hasn’t figured out how to retract into his body like Shinigami does for hers

As a result, whenever he transforms, the sequence consists of him flailing about trying to balance himself with the gigantic flapping monstrosities now on his back as his clothing just magically materialises onto him

“Arise, Mystery LabyriiiIIIIIIIIINNNTH-“

His confidence pretty much took a terminal nosedive as soon as the last Labyrinth made it finally start to get better

Is especially not doing very well coping with the mental changes that come with being a death god, which starts out as just being attracted to the scent of blood, but gets… worse, over time.

”Shini, you have to hurry! If you don’t, Zange will boom-kill… I did not just say that.”

(note: still called her Shinigami at first but transitioned over to Shini rather quickly. He is still Iiving in denial of the fact that it may subconsciously be a pet name)

His version of Shinigami’s scythe is his blade, and naturally its new counterpart is the Solution Scythe

(summoning animation now consists of them doing a short little waltz before Shinigami rips off one of his wings, which turns into the scythe, and a new wing grows back painlessly)

Really doesn’t want to stab Shinigami in the back all the time even though it’s necessary to proceed in the Labyrinths: between this, Crime Scene Recreation, GOD Shinigami, and all the other situations that require him to be forceful in any sense, he makes a terrible guide
