i have what is probably a really obscure question - back in the day when 8tracks was a thing, there was a sweat (acid soup) mix that i THINK you made + posted, with a cover of LOVEFOOL. i'm trying to find that particular cover of LOVEFOOL. do you know which it was?

okay so this has driven me CRAZY bc i REMEMBER what ur talking about, but i cannot find it at all. i tried to do some basic sleuthing, like poking around searching at my twitter and stuff, but all i find from then is 1. scattered evidence of a few ppl being like "ira what the hell is this demonic cover of lovefool" and 2. me gloating about how i only found said demonic cover of lovefool through like a 45 minute google rabbit hole. not helpful, past ira. also, i must have downloaded it at some point to upload it to 8tracks, but that would have been like, two laptops ago and there's no way i can dig up the file.

anyway i got a bit closer by digging a little more -- i have this kind of hazy memory of literally just typing in something like "cool lovefool cover" and trawling list articles, and when i tried to recreate it i found this meanspirited little vice piece with a description that i am like, 99.9999% SURE IS REFERENCING THE VERSION WE'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!! ...but unfortunately bc it's from 2012, all the embeds are gone/broken (and as far as i can tell there's no remnants of links even when i inspect the page, tho i'm not very tech literate when it comes to stuff like this so maybe i'm missing something):

and as we can see here, even back then, if this was the cover we're thinking of, it wasn't attributed or traceable. but we do glean a LITTLE info from this: "under six minutes" means it was five and change, and it must have been uploaded to soundcloud at least 11 years ago.

i tried trawling thru soundcloud w those parameters in mind but couldn't find it... unfortunately i think there's a high chance the original account that uploaded it doesn't exist anymore. (i may have missed something, like maybe a different account has re-uploaded it and i scrolled past it bc i was looking at upload date, but expanding the search to any year is something i don't have the bandwidth for rn!!)

this might be a workable amount of info to at least go to reddit or something with? i feel like there must be at least one subreddit that's specifically dedicated to "help me find this obscure soundcloud remix that got deleted." but for now i'm afraid i must admit defeat, which sucks bc now that you've reminded me of it *i* really wanna listen to the decade-old demonic cover of lovefool too :')

♡ basic gif tutorial!

hiiiii!!! i've made a tutorial in the past but i thought i might update it with this tutorial (re an ask i got a few days ago)! please keep in mind that i'm far from an expert when it comes to giffing but i am open to clarification and further questions <33

DISCLAIMER! there are so many ways to make gifs! everyone has a different process, so don’t be afraid to deviate from this! also! feel free to send an ask for further clarification :)

1: converting !

one of the major issues when it comes to ensuring the best quality for your gifs is making sure that you’re using an application that maintains at least a 1080p quality of the video you use. it’s not a good idea to gif anything below 720p as the quality of the video and consequently, your gifs are not going to be the best!

i) choosing a video

if you’re going to gif, i’d recommend choosing videos that are hq!

✰ Stage Gifs

for stage gifs i use .ts files! it’s definitely easier to source a performance video from youtube, but they won’t provide you with the quality you desire. if anything, use youtube as a source for stage gifs as a last resort!

for ts files, you can use:

-> rosebay

-> twitter (search [group name] + [date of performance] + [ts])

i personally use rosebay for my seventeen performance gifs but other groups do have sites/blogs that are specific to them.

psa: kpop24hours are currently not taking in any applicants atm! best advice would be to follow them on twt and keep their notifs on in case they do

these sources (at least, rosebay) are easy and pretty self explanatory to download!

✰ Normal Gifs

for normal gifs (i.e. of interviews, behind the scenes, going seventeen, etc.) i use youtube <3 keep in mind that it’s always best to use the source most reputable to ensure quality. for example, if i were to gif an inside seventeen video, i would use the seventeen official channel’s post of that, not reposts or anything like that!

to download youtube videos, i use:

-> 4K Video Downloader!

ii) how do you download youtube videos via this application?

all you have to do is:

1) copy the link to the youtube video (PSA this application only works for converting youtube videos)

2) press the green plus button on the very lefthand corner at the top

3) a window that lists the options for the video quality you want will then come up.

4) if it offers 1080p, it is almost always best to choose that for optimum quality!

5) the video will then download and you’ll be able to access it via a folder labeled 4K Video Downloader in your files app.

2. resizing and sharpening !

personally, i don’t sharpen in ps unless absolutely necessary. for most of my sharpening, i leave it to vapoursynth.

now, vapoursynth is a massive pain to download and use but it’s worth it in the end (i promise!! i’ve cried over it a lot but i probably wouldn’t be happy with posting my gifs without it)

i personally found it a bit complicated to download vs so i’ll refer you to a tutorial i used (i also got help from some of my moots bc idk how to do anything so dw if it’s confusing :sob:)

i) how to use vapoursynth now that you’ve gotten it downloaded?

this is probably the hardest part of the tutorial (at least, in my opinion) :sob: for this example, i’ll be using my 4K Video Download instead of a vlive, so if you were using a vlive, you’d have your downloads folder open instead of the 4K Video one.

1) open your files folder twice, make sure that there are two windows open - one being the vapoursynth folder (for me, it’s called VapourSynth64Portable (200722) but it depends on which version of vs you download) and another being the 4K Video Downloader folder.

2) notice the different applications (?) within the vapoursynth folder. in particular, the vapourscript (drop video file on me) one. drag the video you want to gif from the 4K Video Downloader folder onto that app, and it’ll open up a new window. this window is the timestamp window.

3) in this new window, type in the length of the video you want to gif. i personally do this bit by bit (as in, i timestamp each gif instead of letting vapoursynth run through the whole video, which, in retrospect is probably smarter but i am a Fool). for example in the video i’m giffing, i want one of my gifs to run from 0:56-0:58 of the video. so i input the start timestamp. in my case, this would be 00:00:56. and then i press enter. this would direct me to put in the duration of the video i want to encode, which, in my case, would be 2 seconds (00:00:02).

4) press enter again! it’ll open up a window on whichever internet server you use (for me, this is chrome) with a bunch of options:

5) next, you want to alter all the options so that it becomes a gif of the size and sharpening you want.

psa: all of the things below are advised options! it’s completely up to you to choose what settings you use. don’t be afraid to experiment!

ii) resizing

-> to resize, you want to use the GIF Size option. keep in mind the acceptable sizes of gifs on tumblr! if you gif something of an incorrect size, tumblr will probably destroy the quality even more than it already does and make it incredibly blurry, and you don’t want that! to prevent this, make sure to refer to this helpful guide on gif sizes for ones you could use!

for this gif, i’ll be using a 540 x 450 size.

make sure to move your gif around so that everything you want people to see in the gif is there. you can even drag the gif out to zoom in, etc.

6) input the size you desire in the width x height sections next to the GIF Size option.

iii) preprocessing

-> this indicates how fast or slow vs will make your gif. for normal videos, i use qtgmc 30 slow and debilinear. however, i’ve seen in other tutorials that it should be different for performance gifs (i.e. qtgmc 60 slow and debilinear). however, this is all up to you and your preference! experiment, and see what works for you!!

for this gif, i’ll be using qtgmc 30 slow and debliniear.

7) select the speed and debiliniear options next to the processing title.

iv) denoise filters

-> this option basically acts to smoothen your gifs!i tend to use KNLM and have actually never used BM3D before, but feel free to choose the latter!

8) choose between KNLM and BM3D (next to the denoise heading), and select the tickbox that comes up underneath it.

v) sharpening

-> this is when you sharpen your gifs! and make them look less grainy than if you were using ps directly. i personally use finesharp, but again it’s up to you!

9) choose between finesharp and VCFreq, and check the tickbox that comes up underneath it.

this is what my settings are like for this gif:

10) next! you need to alter the values for sharpening and denoise! this can be done on the coded box in the upper right-hand corner:

11) first, change the denoise filter value to whichever one you wish. for this gif, i will be using 1.8. this can be done by altering the “1.2” value in the row that has the text “video = core.knlm.KNLMeansCL(video, 0, 6, 4, 1.2, channels = "YUV”)

12) next change the sharpening value to whatever you want! for this gif, i will be using 0.33. this can be done by altering the “0.22” value in the row that has the text “video = fun.FineSharp(video, sstr=0.22).

the text box should now look like this with your altered values:

13) copy the text and you’ll notice that this window has opened on your taskbar. you will need to copy the text from here into this app - vapoursynth editor.

14) paste the text from that upper right-hand corner into the vapoursynth editor underneath the text #whatever you copied from the resizer goes here.

15) before continuing, depending on your laptop’s speed and ability to process things, i’d recommend lowering the RAM usage to something more bearable for your laptop to process without it overheating and getting damaged. i personally use 300 as the RAM usage but feel free to use whatever you want.

this is what your editor should look like now!

16) press f8 and it’ll open a new window. this will be where you get your edited video that will be good to put in ps and play around with. change the preset option to Export to MOV. and next to the header title, make sure to select Y4M in the dropdown menu. after this, you should be good to press start!

3. giffing !

now this is the part of the tutorial where you kind of get to do your own thing

i) importing

1) open photoshop and click on file, then import, and video frames to layers. it’ll open up your files.

2) what you want to do next is find the output folder. this folder can be found within your vapoursynth folder. that is:

vapoursynth64portable >> gifs >> output

3) click on the output folder and it’ll come up with another window:

make sure your settings are like this before clicking ok!

ii) actual gif making!

4) once you’ve clicked ok, it’ll direct you to the workspace. you will have the frames for your gif on the bottom and the layers on the right-hand side. i won’t go into the specifics for giffing since you asked for quality but if you’re looking for more specific instructions on how to actually gif, feel free to send in another ask or i can refer you to another tutorial!

i) timing

you can alter the timing by selecting all the frames and making it faster or slower - it depends on your preference!

ii) colouring

colouring is the foundation of your gif - it’s what makes it look good!! have fun with it, and try out different colouring! you could also look into using psds if you want! psds are basically pre-made colouring (filters, essentially) that you put over the top of your gif

5) once you’ve finished with the aesthetic steps of making your gif, it’s time to export! to export, you must click file >> export >> save for web (legacy). it’s up to you which export settings you use but make sure that your gif is under 10MB!

6) and voila <3 you’ve got a gif!

Blanket Permissions: what they are and why should you should add one

I am stealing from this very helpful twitter thread by my favorite podficcer @flowerparrish and joining the crusade.

The website in the last tweet is truly incredible. https://www.fpslist.org/ is a database that, as stated above, links to permission statements of various fan creators. If you're someone interested in creating podfics or fan art of written works, knowing who allows these transformative works ahead of time gives you a leg up.

But what exactly is a blanket statement?

Blanket or policy statements about a creator's fanworks are often found in the user profile of their ao3 page/social media account, at an "about" or FAQ page of their website or in a pinned post on twitter/tumblr/journal/etc.

Okay, but why should I include them on my ao3/tumblr/twitter/fanfic.net/etc.? you might ask.

Well, for one, if you're open to receiving these lovely little gifts (pod fics, fan arts)... It makes it so much easier for you to receive them! Instead of folks having to constantly ask for the permission, they can make something to show their appreciation for you and your work!

Okay but I want more information.

Great! Here's a few resources for you!

This lovely resource on Fanlore covers what blanket statements are, the various types of works you might like to specifically allow, and more!

This resource on Fanlore specifically dives into blanket permissions for podfics

@spiritthatdenies made a helpful post here about this already, but I am just continuing the crusade because I know I've never seen it on my dash!

What I like about that last resource is that the OP delves into some reasons that it's easier to include these statements. It takes away some of the anxiety and is more time-effective.

And remember! You don't have to say yes to everything. I have seen a whole range of blanket permissions since starting my (so far) brief journey into podficcing. I have seen statements that:

Specifically state that locked fics cannot be used

Specifically state that locked fics must be requested

Ask to always be given a link to the work after it is done

Specifically state that certain fandoms cannot be used/must be requested

Specifically ask that you do not re-pod anything already podded

So, seriously, your blanket statement can be anything!

Okay, so I added the blanket statement. But how will people know?

Well the best way is by submitting to the FPS archive I linked! Here is the page that has details on just how to do that. You can insert a link into the Google Sheet above, or register on the site and use the My Authors page.

Plus, there's a super wonderful extension I have downloaded that allows you to specifically view who has blanket permissions on ao3! It highlights those authors for you.

I will often check a creator's profile just to see if maybe they have a blanket permission but just aren't on the archive yet. It is rarely the case but I am hopeful nonetheless!

A final little resource, this one specifically for folks creating podfics, but that I think might ease the minds of folks worried about their works not being properly linked to: This browser extension is a podfic posting helper. Basically, it does all of the heavy lifting for you. It adds all the tags, content warnings, ships, you name it. It makes sure you have filled out the transformative works section correctly. It ensures that everything is exactly the way you need to it be (and you can customize it as well).

So... hopefully that covers it! I'm personally tagging just... a lot of fandoms here in hopes this reaches enough corners of the internet and gets reblogged enough that folks begin to add more blanket permission statements!

My Media Use

Social media has been a huge part of my life, but I have a sense it also is huge in other peoples lives as well. I use many different social media platforms throughout my day such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Truthfully, I have never thought about how I feel using these platforms or even why I was using them but after taking time to think about these questions, I finally have found the answers for which I was searching.

I had first started using Twitter when I was a freshman in high school, at first, I was confused on how to use Twitter due to certain settings and the messages that were being brought to my attention on the app. I ended up deleting the app until I was a junior in high school, I had re downloaded it because I began seeing more of my friends using it, so I had decided to see what the hype was about. After getting to understand the app better, I truly began enjoying it, I was getting the latest sports information, political views, comedic skits, and even messages from different collegiate coaches across the United States. I would feel joy, sadness, empathy, and excitement all from what I would see on my page. I concluded that I love Twitter and all the distinct types of emotions that I would feel daily.

Instagram however is a different story. I had first started using the app when I was in middle school, eighth grade to be specific. Just like Twitter, I began using it because all my friends did and for the first few years using it, I enjoyed it. Then as the app began growing and growing, I started to see things change from not only the app but also people using it. My friends began putting on a different persona for the internet, I began seeing more hateful comments underneath posts, I saw more people bashing each other than encouraging others. Finally, I had enough, going into my freshman year of college I had deleted the app. Instagram had made me feel hateful, resentful, lost, no purpose because no matter what I did, I would always be criticized. It was only about five months ago to redownload the app, why you might ask? I am getting older and want to work somewhere in the marketing field, with more social media platforms I would be able to show future employers’ different type of styles a internet profile could have. It is my least used app; however, I tend not to use it as much because I still see people putting on fronts of who they are and what they do. It makes me feel sadness because I feel no one should have to hide their true selves from friends and family.

With Snapchat, it is different from other social media apps. With Snapchat there really is not much you can hide from your peers. Just like Instagram I have been using snapchat since the eighth grade, however I have never once deleted this app. I genuinely enjoy it, at first, I started using it because everyone else was but now I like it because I can keep up with friends that have moved to various parts of the world and still be able to communicate with them as if there right in front of me. I love Snapchat and although I am getting older, I have the sense that it will still be extremely popular five to ten years from now.

In conclusion, I have found that social media has always had an impact on my life but not because I wanted to use these platforms but because my friends and family were using them, and I always wanted to relate with them in some form. I have been able to find joy and happiness amongst these apps but also anger and sadness. I find that most social media platforms in today's day an age is starting to play on people’s emotions and finally try to connect one another rather than separate.

Note that the window that displays the command scrolls to the right.

Select the text of the following Terminal command and copy it.

Make sure the El Capitan installer (or at least a copy of it), called Install OS X El Capitan.app, is in its default location in your main Applications folder (/Applications).

If the drive isn’t named Untitled, the procedure won’t work.) 11 rows When it was still Lion DiskMaker, DiskMaker X had the ability to burn DVDs too.

#DISKMAKER X LEOPARD FOR MAC#

The 2.0.2 version of Lion DiskMaker for Mac is provided as a freeload on our website. (The Terminal commands I provide here assume that the drive is named Untitled. Burn the image onto a compatible external drive and enable its loading whenever connecting to a device. It detects the OS X Install program with Spotlight then proposes to build a bootable install disk and make it look as nice as possible.

Connect to your Mac a properly formatted 8GB (or larger) drive, and rename the drive Untitled. DiskMaker X (was Lion DiskMaker) helps you to build a bootable drive from the official OS X installer app (the one you download from the Mac App Store).

So, stay tuned, read the blog regularly, and check the Twitter account or Facebook page for more information.(If you absolutely refuse to go near Terminal, an El Capitan-compatible version of DiskMaker X is now available, although I haven’t yet had the chance to test it.) Making the installer drive But this does not absolve me of my errors…

However, don’t expect the new version to be available right now: I am at the same time very busy on my (hem) real job, and won’t be able to push a new update as fast as I wish.Īgain, I apologize for having this gone public, it should have been better tested (for my own defense, testingLion DiskMaker under four different OS takes a lot of time. I prefer to concentrate on the issue with 10.6 by working on a fix than answering a flood of mail 🙂 Please don’t report any bug if you use 10.6.X. So I want to correct this as soon as possible and re-use this code to make it work if 10.6 is used. In fact the code I used for Lion DiskMaker 3b2 did not use createinstallmedia at all. And… it almost worked, though a bit convulated. As I began to work on Lion DiskMaker X 3 / DiskMaker X, I did not try to use Apple’s command before it went under the radar (no pun intended), so I developed my own code to build the disk. Though this is not my direct responsibility but a bug in Apple’s tool, I feel bad for having this major problem slipped. I really apologize for this bug, as I should have ensured to perform more rigorous testing. Which may be painful for some of you.Īn easier way would be to have a 10.7 or 10.8 machine around and build the install disk with DiskMaker X from this machine. Of course, this means that you WON’T be able to perform a clean install of 10.9 straight.

After upgrading to 10.9, launch DiskMaker X 10 and build your bootable install disk.

Make a backup copy on another disk of the OS X Install Mavericks app on another disk.

--- Jaskier has never really been in the loop when it comes to social media. He was behind the curve when he made his Tumblr and he was two years late to sign up for Twitter. It’s no surprise that he finally downloads Tik Tok and makes an account several months after it’s become a viral platform.

That also means all the good usernames are taken; Jaskier types in @buttercup-bard, sees that it’s available, and calls it a day. This isn’t an app he’s going to care about. It’s just to waste time during his forty minute commute to and from campus. 

Alas, he has ADHD...and this shit is addictive.

Especially, he hates to admit, the thirst-trap hotties who do weird, obscure, edgy POV videos. Jaskier knows they’re aimed primarily towards teen and young adult women but he’s a red-blooded Redanian gay. He’s horny. He can watch a few POV Tik Toks on the bus and thirst after pretty boys with big muscles...as a treat.

By Jaskier’s second week of classes he’s found a definite favorite Tik-Tokker (is that what they’re called? Or is it influencer? Jaskier doesn’t care). The guy is gorgeous. He has beautiful honey-gold eyes and long, silvery-white hair; which is appropriate since his handle is @whitehairdontcare. He makes a wide range of content, too. Perfect for Jaskier’s Concerta-focused tastes. There are some dances here and there and some Q&A videos, but for the most part he does POVs. 

Jask and his roommates, Essi and Priscilla, have spent many happy hours poring over Mr. White Hair’s account, watching and re-watching their favorites from his vast repertoire of content. Essi loves his weird, edgy-boi shit. Stuff with titles like “POV: I fight the bully who insulted your haircut” or “POV: you make a deal with the devil for true love”. Stuff that Jaskier would have been into when he still listened to My Chemical Romance on the regular (okay, he still does, but don’t tell Essie). 

Priscilla is a huge fan of Tik Tok dances. She follows every challenge and ranks her favorites, compiling them into a YouTube series that’s more for her self-gratification than anything else. Mr. White Hair is generally towards the top of her list whenever he deigns to follow a trend that doesn’t involve badly applied makeup blood smears. The guy clearly works out and the definition of his body (and the movements of said really hot body) make the dances look so much more fluid and fun. Jaskier and Priscilla clearly share a brain-cell when it comes to appreciating Mr. White Hair’s hotness.

Jaskier’s favorites, of course, are the cute little POVs that lie scattered between all the edgy ones. Stuff made for the softies of Tik Tok. Stuff made for boys like Jaskier. “POV: I fix your car for you” is the one he’s probably re-watched the most. Mr. White Hair is lying on his back beneath a jacked-up blue car, oil smeared in a few strategic places on his face, chest, and arms. At the very end of the Tik Tok he moves the wrench out of the way of his face completely and winks directly into the camera.

Jaskier hates to admit it, even to himself, but no matter how many times he’s watched that stupid twenty-give second video, that wink drops his heart straight down into his shoes and fills his stomach with butterflies.

“Hey do you guys carry fake blood here?” an almost terrifyingly deep voice asks from behind him. Jaskier twirls around on his heel, Retail Smile firmly in place, and loses his shit the moment he sets eyes on his latest customer.

It’s Mr. White Hair.

Here. In the middle of the aisle of the Party City where Jaskier works every weekend. He’s either going to throw up or pass out or both. 

He doesn’t though. Instead, the Demon Lord of Retail possesses his body momentarily and nods, “Right over this way!” He leads the insanely attractive influencer over to the year-round section of Halloween FX makeup and gestures towards the shelf filled with various fake blood capsules, bottles, and packets. 

“Thanks,” Mr. White hair smiles. Jaskier nods again, silent, and drifts back towards the counter in a daze. He’s the only one on shift right now (it is not a very busy Party City) and he knows that he can’t pass out on the dirty tile floor or he’ll get fired (and perhaps tetanus). He just needs to power through the next few minutes and then he can crouch next to the helium tank and freak the fuck out.

But not until Mr. White Hair is gone.

Just as Jaskier is re-learning how to breathe normally, the sexy internet star makes his way towards the counter with an armful of products and the retail worker loses it again. Thank god for the ability to compartmentalize.

“So, just these for you?”

“Yeah, thanks.”

“No problem! I love your Tik Toks by the way,” Jaskier replies automatically. His eyes widen slightly. Why the fuck did I mention his Tik Toks!?

“Thanks,” the guy says and blushes. “I didn’t know they’d gotten so popular.”

“You have like two million followers?” Jaskier laughs. “I think that makes you pretty popular. Maybe even famous.”

“Oh yeah...right.” 

“Anyway, your total is going to be twenty-one fifty.”

Mr. White Hair pays and Jaskier bags all his fake blood, wondering the whole time exactly what kind of content he can look forward to seeing. More of Essi’s edgy shit, apparently. As he’s handing the plastic bag over the counter, Jaskier smiles and works up the courage to ask, “Is your hair naturally white? I don’t mean to pry, it’s just really pretty.”

Geralt’s face goes slightly pinker than before and he nods. “Yeah. Weird genetic thing. Thanks.”

“No problem. Right on,” Jaskier beams. “Well, it was nice meeting a famous person. Thanks for stopping in.”

“Thanks for helping me out,” the Tik Tokker replies. Jaskier watches him exit the store before ripping his phone from his pocket and dialing Essi. He needs to talk to her before he spirals into a giddy panic attack.

“Hey Jask have you seen that hot guy’s latest Tik Tok?” Priscilla asks, lounging across her futon like a queen. Jaskier looks up from his copy of The Collective History of Aedirnian Funeral Dirges and wrinkles his eyebrows in confusion.

“No, why?”

“You should go check your phone. I think you’ll be happily surprised.”

“Oh-kay,” Jaskier says, drawing out the ‘kay’ for as long as it takes him to get up from his seat on the floor and exit the room. He retrieves his phone from the charger in the kitchen and returns to Priscilla’s bedside. He opens his new favorite app and pulls up @whitehairdontcare’s page. There’s a new POV from earlier this morning and Jaskier taps on it. 

His eyes go round when he reads the caption: “POV: You’re the cute cashier at the Party City and I’m bad at flirting”. 

Mr. White Hair is staring into the camera with those beautifully golden eyes, awkwardly rubbing at the back of his neck with his hand while he lip syncs to whatever song is playing. He’s wearing a tight, navy blue v-neck and Jaskier can see the movement of every one of his ridiculously defined muscles as they flex. The silver wolf’s-head necklace Mr. White Hair always wears around his neck is in its usual place, dangling down between those perfect collarbones…

Jaskier takes a shaky breath and glances up at his friends, who are staring back at him with wide eyes. “It could be about anyone.”

“How many Party Cities do you think he went to yesterday?”

“I’m not going to get my hopes up,” Jaskier snorts. “He’s a social media influencer and I am one semester away from finishing my degree and my thesis. Why would he ever want to be with someone like me?”

Essi rolls her eyes and Jaskier goes back to his homework.

Later that night, alone in his room, Jaskier plugs his earbuds into his phone and watches the Tik Tok over and over. He finds the song Geralt used and adds it to his Work Is Tough playlist, which he’s allowed to play over the loudspeakers at the store so long as he’s working a solo shift. 

He watches Mr. White Hair’s plush pink lips move around the words and dreams of kissing them someday, as far-fetched as that scenario is (because this video is definitely not for him, that’s impossible):

20/07/2021-Birds, butterflies, dragonflies, moths and flowers at home and Lakeside 

On another hot day I believe I heard the Greylag Geese flying over out the back this morning again as I worked, they seem to have a fairly regular morning and evening flight path past the house these days. I took the first six pictures in this photoset on my lunch time walk today of a white clover dominated view on the green out the front on the way to Lakeside with this flower carpeting the place as I said recently, a commonly photographed by me view at Lakeside looking down to the steam railway station from the north east kissing gate entrance, some lovely agrimony along the northern path, two more views and one of the group of cattle close to the fence in the southern fenced off nature reserve area I tweeted another picture of another on Dans_Pictures tonight. 

Going along the northern path a little way and the central path between the two fenced off nature reserve areas I enjoyed doing another Big Butterfly Count. Meadow Browns dominated again with fifteen seen in the fifteen minutes just like yesterday lunch time, Small White which had tied it yesterday second again with ten and Marbled White and Ringlet continued their good starts to the count two species I am relieved to get in always as their seasons can fade during the three weeks of Big Butterfly Count with four and two seen respectively. There was one Gatekeeper too and five Small Skippers I saw about during the time a species not within the Big Butterfly Count but I am enjoying keeping a tally of them out of interest too as I see them with some of the Big Butterfly Count target species. I got some exceptional views of Marbled White and there was one moment that stood out with two Meadow Browns flying around and battling each other. One of a few really good views of this delightful light and dark brown with splash of orange butterfly and I had that moment I can tend to in Big Butterfly Count every year when I am stunned by the amount of Meadow Browns around it feels they are so plentiful and it was great to reflect on that not too far from where we saw our first ever Meadow Brown (in the southern fenced off area) eleven years ago. Meadow Browns and Marbled Whites especially had led me to want to do a count down this central path I don’t know if I did any here during the many at Lakeside last year as I had seen a lot of butterflies around here and for maybe a more thoroughfare type part of the park it has a great deal of butterflies around. 

Dragonflies paraded around again here in the form of Black-tailed Skimmer and Emperor. I did also see some more great flowers on the walk today, both a clock and yellow dandelion together on the green out the front before getting into Lakeside, similar for thistle inside Lakeside, bird’s-foot trefoil, carrot exactly a month after first learning this one at South Stack in Anglesey I can’t believe a month has passed since that amazing Anglesey holiday already and two nice glowing yellow ones silverweed and my first common fleabane of the year one I did enjoy last year here and took a memorable photo of in 2020. Nearly a year on from having the PlantNet ID app suggested by a kind Twitter friend and downloading it and the revolution in my hobby it sparked I reflected this morning about how good it feels and how it opens up a whole new section of the natural world being able to know so many flowers when I walk around now and the knowledge this year after last has grown and grown which I didn’t have to this whilst not perfect increased level a year ago. I do enjoy finding out what they’re called for ones I don’t know too with some quirky names at times.

The sun had gone behind a thicker cloud than had been around for a few days momentarily on the walk but on the northern path before coming down it was quite invigorating to see bits of sun start to kiss the path gradually and as though the landscape awoke. Going from slightly overcast to the sun being out I lapped up chances for photos I maybe wouldn’t have looked twice at taking if the sun had been out when I arrived such is the shift in appearance the sun emerging lighting it up bit by bit tends to bring about. Whilst obviously I am happy to take pictures of beautiful views on darker days and in bright sunshine all the way through I’m never short of inspiration. 

I reached beach lake and a very large group of House Martins and Swifts were flying around over the water, quite low at times a sight I have loved enjoying so much this year here and been so lucky to. On the way home I enjoyed another Marbled White on the green areas out the front this one literally outside the house the closest I’d ever seen to home before so this was special with one of my favourite butterflies like moments I had with Small Copper, Orange Tip and Clouded Yellow last year and Small Skipper recently as well. 

I took the seventh and eigth pictures in this photoset of a tree out the back looking stunning in the evening light and the waxing gibbous moon in the light out the front. It was a perfect summer’s evening especially in the heat and bright sunlight. And as I had hoped would happen with windows left open and lights on after sunset during the heatwave to try and keep cool moths had come in. Firstly the one in the ninth picture in this photoset that must have come in last night as it was in the living room mid-evening the Rosy Tabby a sweet little oaky brown looking moth. Later in the evening, after taking the tenth and final picture in this photoset of a sky scene around sunset, a Long-legged Tabby another pretty looking one came in. Moths are very much like flowers something I want to build my knowledge on more and I have been looking for an app to do what PlantNet does but for moths for a while so that I am not relying too much on other’s knowledge on Twitter especially the brilliant, dedicated and very useful MothIDUK account which so much hard work goes into (of which I will still query moths with in future still I’m sure!) and tonight I re-downloaded another I had suggested by someone on Twitter last year, the iNaturalist Seek app. On a brief go with it last year I didn’t have much success for it but it seemed really good for identifying these moths tonight and was accurate. It the photo is not clear enough it can say which family group its in so in a world like flowers compared to birds and butterflies etc where idea of the family group is enough for me this should work well. It can be used for just about any wildlife also. And so a new revolution in my hobby begins? I hope so, but tonight it just feels good to be really sharing the house with moths for a little bit lately as we head into the peak season for them coming in. I do find moths so varying and fascinating with how many there are and all the shapes and sizes they come in. 

Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first ever Rosy Tabby and Long-legged Tabby moths, one of my favourite butterflies the Marbled White, two of my favourite dragonflies the Keeled Skimmer and Emperor, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Small Skipper, Small White, Swift, House Martin, House Sparrow, Starling, Jackdaw, Herring Gull well, Lesser Black-backed Gull on a street light especially which was nice out the front tonight, Black-headed Gull, Greylag Goose and more interesting insects in the house tonight.

hey so. i’m not going to lie and pretend that i feel at all qualified to answer this.

what i can tell you is this: fear does not mean truth. a lot of this type of fear stems from the cognitive distortion known as catastrophizing. i’m not a therapist, so here’s a pdf of a page describing what that means. basically, it isn’t realistic to believe that you will be alone forever.

it is a fear, because humans want to be around other humans. loneliness isn’t fun. but... here’s the thing. you mention that it’s super hard for you to make friends. you then mention blaming yourself. i’m gonna take a guess here and suggest that you check out the cognitive distortions of personalization (for me, “my friends tend to not reach out to me the way I reach out to them. if i reached out to them more they’d be better friends to me”), mind reading (”this person i consider a friend hasn’t talked to me in a bit. they must hate me and think i’m an awful friend.” them: *anxiously thinking the same thing*. both of us: *not reaching out because we think the other hates us*), emotional reasoning (example given fits), disqualifying the positive (super difficult to make friends doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t have people who want to be friends with you. has anyone ever reached out first to you? they count), and magnification and minimization (whatever you just responded to the previous ones, check for this in those responses. this likes to sneak up on you. an example of this that clicks with me is how seeing a problem marked wrong on a test can make you feel awful, even if you did well on the exam. you’ve magnified what’s wrong and ignored the fact that you still did well).

obligatory: I AM NOT A THERAPIST. MY THERAPIST IS REGULARLY SHOVING THIS STUFF IN MY GENERAL DIRECTION WITH EXASPERATED AND CONCERNED EXPRESSIONS. all of the extra examples i gave are things that i think and should check myself on. strongly advise talking to a therapist if you can.

that said, possible actions because i’m an action kinda person:

- have you talked to your friends about how them saying “you’ll find someone” is upsetting and not useful? it might be worthwhile to do so. i don’t mean yell at them for it, but rather do something like the PB&J style conversation I described here. within that, some topics can be how do you feel when someone says ‘you’ll find someone eventually’? and how do you feel your orientation impacts your friendships. also ask them if they have any topics they’d like to bring to the table. in all honesty, it can be a really cathartic experience and fun even when discussing heavy topics.

- please talk to a therapist! many therapy offices have financial plans. the worst that happens is that you call, describe your situation, and are told, “I’m sorry, we can’t offer that support.”, and you’ll probably get a quick “maybe try X?”. there are also online therapy resources. if you can, look for their opinions on queer people on their website.

- see if there’s a local a-spec group. i know i’ve seen a few blogs around dedicated to those groups, but maybe try looking on FB or Twitter too

- take a deep breath. you’re okay. anxiety lies. it’s trying to protect you, but sometimes our lizard brain takes it a little too far. that’s okay. you’re okay. if you feel particularly anxious, try square breathing (though, mild contention with that article - if you feel dizzy while doing it, find a count of four that works better for you. i personally will do it to the beat of my music, or every other beat) or the 5-4-3-2-1 method (belly breath mentioned: put one hand on your stomach, and the other on your chest. try to breathe so that your hand on your stomach rises first).

- re: the last point, download the app “What’s Up?” by Corona Labs. it describes a lot of the things I talked about throughout this, provides some additional methods for calming yourself, and provides additional thoughts on how to identify some cognitive distortions. under “Help Right Now”, i personally like “here & now” and “get grounded”. you may like some of the others.

As mentioned in the 'Industry Research' section of this blog, it isn't just the technical skills future employers will want to see. They want to see how your passion and art is fuelled also!! Sound design is more than just a series of sticking sounds together in a DAW. It's all about creating the other half of the story!

Core values & necessary skills

In my blog's branding section, I spoke about core values and those I deem to be top of my list. Core values make us who we are. It's what drives ambition and our creative thought process.

Accountability is high on my list of values/skills. Being accountable for the amount and quality of work we do is crucial. Often we dismiss our failures because we won't hold ourselves responsible. Though, at the other end of the spectrum, we more often than not, sing our praises. So holding yourself accountable as an individual or team unit, is just as crucial during the failures as it is during the success.

Whilst, teamwork is a very cliché term used with regards to employability, it remains a massive part of my core skill set. Being surrounded by team members is an excellent way to find a creative place in a project. I can then take those ideas and present for peer review. Having people to work with not only makes producing a big project easier. Still, it gives me a tremendous sense of satisfaction that like-minded creatives have come together to create something incredible.

Passion is a big part of what drives me. Music and composing is such a wonderful expression of artistry for me. Not just the music side of things, but I then took my love for music (and audio in general) regarding sound design. I began exploring the more intricate realms of audio. Each day my passions grow, but I NEVER wonder why I love what I do, not even on my worst days.

Respect is a skill I'm continually re-evaluating. I think it is undeniably essential to respect other people and their creative differences.

Continuous improvement is about always finding new and exciting ways to work. Technology changes exceptionally fast these days, and in audio production, the skillsets also have to change. Keeping up to date on industry techniques, skills, and methods will ensure I stay relevant to the expected work output. There are some general skills required to be a sound designer composer within the creative industries. However, some more specific skills are necessary if specialising in TV & film or games.

Basic skills: 

Creating, maintaining and backing of own original sound libraries.

Digital signal processing

Producing sound maps/ storyboards from scripts.

Mixing inside Digital Audio Workstations

Work along with side other members of the audio post-production team

Sector-specific skills

TV/Film and Game skills:

Compose and engineer music

improving sound quality

Spot, arrange and edit audio into video, or other mediums.

Use visual logic systems such as Max MSP.

Use of game implementation systems, i.e. Unity, Unreal, Fmod and Wwise.

Layering sounds to have a desired/or specific effect.

I have begun creating and collating my sound libraries last year. At first, I had incredibly long titles for samples and one-shots but started finding it hard to achieve all of the sounds (both RAW and edited). That was until I came across the word 'metadata'. Having a logical and easily navigable database of sounds is crucial to making my workflow more efficiently. I'm starting my journey into audio metadata with a free app called Soundly. Soundly offers a free-plan with up to 2500 local file storage and access to free cloud-based sound effects. To start, this will be ideal, but I would like to look at other plans that will include Cloud storage backup in the future. Currently I backup all of my libraries onto an 8TB desktop drive, another external HDD and my google drive. 

What is digital sound processing or DSP, you may ask? Digital sound processing is where audio converts from analogue to digital signal. A series of mathematical calculations are then applied before the signal returns to analogue before final output. As a producer/composer/sound designer, I use various plugins to manipulate the sounds inside my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Plugins come in many forms. VST is the most common form of an audio plugin and is Microsoft's Virtual Studio Technology. Avid uses its plugin file system called AAX (Avid Audio Extension), and Apple uses its own AU system (Audio Unit).

I use Logic Pro X as my music production/composition DAW of choice. I believe this offers a great deal of flexibility to music composers alike. 

In contrast, I use Pro Tools as my post-production tool. Here, I produce final mixes of songs before proceeding onto the mastering process, which I also use Pro Tools. Pro Tools is also my DAW of choice for sound design work, purely because of its sheer power in dealing with raw audio.

During a mix-down phase of a musical composition, you should hear each instrument with clarity. Musical instruments all operate at different frequencies within the frequency spectrum. By respecting the base frequencies at which a particular instrument's audio outputs, I can make the final asset as audibly clear as possible, for maximum viewing pleasure. 

When working on sound design projects, I will often improve the sound of my source audio captured when out in the field inside iZotope RX8. Here I will remove clicks, hissing, background hum, de-verb, and even isolate parts of dialogue to ensure that audio is optimal for project usage.

I do love writing music and producing sound effects! I like to create work for TV & film, animations, interactive media, audiobooks and more. I import video assets into my DAW (Logic Pro X or Pro Tools depending on projects final output). 

This way, I have a visual in front of me from which to work. You can then lock the audio event in position with the video using SMTPE time code. This way, it keeps my music and sound effects in the exact place they need to be, without fear of being moved or adjusted in any way. Just don't forget to lock the positions!!

Max MSP is a powerful visual logic system for generating sound design and producing electronic music. I am new to this software and am learning new and exciting ways to integrate MAX MSP into my DAW workflow. I decided to explore the unique and intricate methods of composing music and designing sound for various media forms.

Examples of work

The best way to showcase both technical and artistic skill is quite obviously through social media platforms. Instagram has become a staple platform where businesses and creatives promote themselves and their craft. There are other platforms such as YouTube, SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook (and don't forget LinkedIn!) to name but a few. With all of these beautiful places to promote me and work, I must consider the type of content I post to maintain maximum engagement with audiences and potential employers.

After many years of making and producing music at home, my interest in exploring the world of all thing's audio continued to grow. I purchased myself a simple, cheap portable recorder, some dirt-cheap microphones, and just went out and explored the world around me. At first, I made some novice mistakes in just aimlessly pointing and pressing the record button. Still, I soon learned that I merely heard things playback after recording. I never stopped to listen before I hit that big red button!

Slowly I got better (still, a long way to go), but most importantly I absolutely loved the process, and still am! I took great inspiration from reading the sound Effects Bible by Ric Viers (https://www.ricviers.com/sound-effects-bible) and Field Recording from Research To Wrap by Paul Virostek (https://www.creativefieldrecording.com/downloads/field-recording-from-research-to-wrap/). Both explain in great detail about how to get set up, get a recording and start collating my sound libraries.

With that said here's one of my first sound design projects. By this time, I had upgraded my audio recorder and had a few new microphone additions. Jez Riley French's D-Series Hydrophone, C – Series Contact mic, and his electromagnetic coil mic. Again, it was a learning curve starting with these new bits of kit, but I am genuinely pleased with how much this project turned out.

Without further ado, I present to you a lovely piece of animation by Polynoid, titled Mem. I create a gorgeous stereo cacophony of delicate sounds with Sci-Fi and electronic elements that lend itself well to the animation's energy.
