okay, general list of different spellings I’ve seen in the dunmeshi fan translations

laios- has never been spelled differently in my experience. that’s bc ライオス is very easy to transliterate lol. (raiosu)

falin- farlin/farlyn were the most common! falin was actually a pretty unpopular/scrapped translation from my memory lol. i think her name is just ファリン (falin) though so. yeah it is the most literal one. i still like farlyn a little more though heehee.

now! their last name- now localized as “touden” was spelled “thorden” in the translation i read.

senshi- always been senshi. this is actually important for a small bit where Falin thinks his name is 戦士 (warrior), lol

marcille- surprisingly, she also had a few different spellings. it was really early in the fan translation so you don’t see a lot of people calling her anything other than marcille. it was like… marshille/marsille/marsil so not too different.

chilchuck- chilchack. i specifically remember a t/n saying they decided to go with chilchack over chilchuck LOL.

Thistle- Sissel. Thissel.

Shuro- THIS ONE IS SO FUNNY ACTUALLY. For a while in the translation I was reading Laios & co would call him “Sureau” WHICH. fuck makes later events so much better. I’m not sure how intentional it was on the translator’s part but it ended up working out if it wasn’t!

Other things:

-Tallmen got translated just as “human” before it became clear that it was the canon term for humans.

-I can’t remember exactly what name they chose, but one translator decided to localize Kensuke to something to sort of preserve the pun. For those who don’t know, naming a sword Kensuke is kinda like naming it “Sir Swordsington” lolol.

hi, i recently made a tumblr account and i love your fengqing art so much!! i’ve been wanting to try and finally start drawing more regularly and i was wondering if you had any tips on where to start when drawing characters or people in general? i think most would just say to look up tutorials and videos but even that’s just very vague to me and seems too daunting ಠ_ಠ

this is just my personal advice, but as someone who never "practices" or studies (i dont even own a pencil or a sketchbook), i don't recommend following tutorials if you are just starting out, because rather than learning how to do things correctly, i think it's important to draw in a way that's fun for you.

i really like to draw people but i don't have any interest in studying anatomy, and it can be daunting for beginners as you say. also, there can be a problem of thinking of what to draw in the first place.

I think that you can find some poses that you like and copy them, and then you will come to understand what feels natural (ex. where does the arm or leg go in a certain pose). Like if i see a cute pose, I just draw my favourite characters in the same pose heehee 🤭

Another thing is that I like to look at outfits a lot, so if I see an outfit that I like, I will try to draw my favourite character wearing it (for example).

I think those are my general tips to draw mindlessly, so you can naturally become able to draw a variety of people doing a variety of things over time. it's like when we first learn how to draw a character standing with hands in the pockets and we find it so cool, so that's all that we draw for like, the next 6 months. that's a good way to practice it !! 👍

Drawing is very fun for me, and I think that if you want to keep liking to draw, it's important to look at different arts, works, etc. and instead of analyzing the techniques of the artist, you can try to figure out what you like about it. It doesn't have to be renowned painters or anything, as long as you like it.

(tgcf manhua art) our taizi dianxia is very pretty!! he has long eyelashes and red lips, so maybe i want to draw something like that too.

I think you already know it's important to experiment, but I think it doesn't hurt to draw the same thing over and over again too. Literally all I ever draw is fengqing kissing, so if all you want to draw is some characters standing on a white background that's fine too. Even hua cheng made 1000 statues of dianxia until he got good 👍✨

that being said, if someone wants to watch videos, my favourite painting channel is watercolor by shibasaki

he is a painting/drawing instructor and not only is he insanely good, but he looks like he has so much fun drawing that it makes me want to draw every time i watch it. I'm not sure if all his videos are subbed in english but i think most are!!

Loved hopping in mid-mission with Bruce and Damian banter - the first issues of Damian's B&R 2009 and 2011 runs have Batman and Robin’s relationship on a rocky start, so it’s a refreshing change!

Bruce rhyming with the pause like he’s really thinking about it LOL he's having fun!!

"You roll your eyes just like your mother" SO CUUTE!! a nice way of relating Damian to Talia in a habit haha (would also be neat if Damian had some of his mom's physical features heehee...haha...) Also "it's just us here for a bit." Would anyone else from the batfam be staying there in the future? 🤔

OKAY really want to delve into Damian cutting Bruce off here, since we're mostly in Bruce's POV atm.

Bruce saying that he's happy Damian chose to live with him seems to impose the idea Damian chose Bruce over Talia. From how Bruce thought Talia should "never claim Damian" i don't think that's something Damian wants to hear, especially after Damian already chose not to be on either of his parent's side!!

Batman VS Robin (2022) #4

In the end of his Robin book, Damian says he's still figuring out who he is, so i'm wondering if he's conflicted about losing that independence of being able to carve a path of his own now that he's with Bruce again. Either way, Damian's (VERY CUTE!!) self insert AU story gives us a glimpse of his concerns about his parents and not getting to be a teenager 🥺

Super Sons (2017) #10

LOVE DAMIAN'S ROBIN MOBILE!! glad he's moved on from the batmobile and just got his own - it's very much the opposite too in how it's bright, open, and bulky where the batmobile's dark and sleek!

The last part of the issue showcases Di Meo's action! i was pretty worried about it, because when i first saw his interiors for DC VS Vampires (2021) i barely understood what was happening im so sorry sir 😭 Honestly, it was still jarring but much better! HUGE shoutout to their Letterer Steve Wands, because the SFX and dialogue placement improved the flow a lot!

Final thoughts: GORGEOUS ART, FUN WRITING, I LOVE DAMIAN!! i'm analyzing way too much but i'm just so happy to have an ongoing with Damian again (with a writer that actually! likes him!) 😭

My hopes are we get those fun stylized panels of Damian's art/comics where we get insight on his headspace similar to the shoujo panels from Robin!! Reunion of Damian and his pets!! And it's still early, but still holding out for Williamson to keep to his word on this!! 👀

YEAHHH ok so this is a brief idea of how the cmy story was gonna go:

Evie goes to Arden and hires him to kill her brother in exchange for less time imprisoned + letting him take out his own brother.

MEANWHILE 👇

Kell wants to reconnect with Gordon a bit more so Gordo decides to introduce him to the science team. Shenanigans ensue and SURPRISE! Evie sends a message to Tommy for a family reunion @ where she lives. The team + Benny + Kell decides to take this meet n’ greet to Evie.

They eventually get to where Evie is and she isn’t anticipating other ppl so she attempts to split Tommy from the rest of the group. However! Arden is wayy too giddy at the opportunity to catch his own brother off guard which ruins Evie’s initial plan.

So now the team is on the run- Arden’s on their tail alongside whoever else who was hired by Evie.

Eventually the group is forced into a divide, with Kell Bubby and Benrey off from the main group.

(Now this is where James importance would be established) turns out Benny n’ Kell where both caught. Arden is free to do whatever with his brother while Kell and Bubby are handed off to James to fuck around with as humans are so easy to experiment on 😚

Gordo, Dr. C, n’ Tommy are elsewhere recovering and eventually meet one of Ben’s siblings (Dune? probably)

The group somehow finds out the other half’s whereabouts and plans to get em’ back.

They get to James lab??? and get both Ben and Bubby back but are unsure where Kell is.

They are eventually pursued by Arden and some masked robot guy with a sword. Dramatic reveal! It’s Kell (parallel to Gordon’s HEV suit but he’s the one being piloted by the armor) not in control, he lobs off Gordon’s arm and catches Tommy 😬

ANNNNDDD THATS ALL I GOT. yeah lol. But that’s what I wanted to do with the CYM story- Kell’s involvement is more as a reluctant villian is something I’ve thought about a lot heehee ^^

I actually love these kinds of silly asks so keep 'em coming! Nothing like finishing a Majima angst post and seein the next ask if big silly, makes me go heehee. Headcanons under the cut as per usual.

Kazuma Kiryu

Kiryu has a lot of experience with kids so when the Morning Glory kids ask him to participate in Roblox, he's at least down to give it a shot. He will learn very quickly that he has no idea what he's doing.

The boys will have the most fun playing Roblox with Kiryu. He's a little sore whenever he loses but keeps up appearances for the kids and eventually grows to enjoy it regardless of winning or losing.

He's fascinated that you can program Roblox, even though he doesn't know any programming. The kids have expressed some interest in it but none of them know how to do it yet either. They all like to watch videos on it though and go "ooh" and "ahh" at what other people do.

Majima Goro

Majima will spoil the hell out of his kid/kids, so before they can even finish asking if he will play with them, he's already at the computer saying "Alrighty, show me what to do".

Honestly the most enthusiastic gamer dad. Did he lose? Who cares. Did he win? Who cares! He's just having fun as long as his kids are having fun too.

You honestly may even catch him playing the game just on his own after a while. Majima's a pretty flexible and adaptable guy so he even if he isn't personally into the game, he may take a little time to play by himself to improve at the game.

Saejima Taiga

Although Saejima is good with kids when it comes to being a parent or teaching life lessons, he doesn't really know how to "play" or game with kids. Physical games like hide and seek he can manage but he can hardly manage using technology on his own, let alone with people.

However, Saejima is the biggest softie and cannot say no to someone he cares about. He will give his most earnest effort but undoubtedly he will become very confused. He won't let his frustration show in front of children though.

What he DOES enjoy is watching let's play videos of the game with his kids. Not only can he take more a backseat role and not be on the spot for gaming but it's something he understands easily and can therefore be in on the jokes with the kids.

Akiyama Shun

Type of guy who never expected to be a dad so most of the time he's winging it. However, his good nature does make him a bit of a natural with people. At the very least, if his kid asks him to play Roblox, he will give it a hearty attempt.

What Akiyama prefers to do is actually just watch his kid play. He loves to hype his kid up and will ask questions like "So what're you trying to do now?" and encourage his kid to try new things in the game.

Even though Akiyama may not be a good or enthusiastic gamer by himself, he will totally try to rope you into it too. When your kid asks for Akiyama to play, he'll say "Why don't we BOTH play Roblox with you?". Akiyama loves a little friendly family competition.

Tanimura Masayoshi

He might actually ask his kid if HE can participate in Roblox with them. Either way, his answer to playing is definitely yes. He'll say things like "I bet I can go longer without dying than you" only to lose on purpose at the last minute to give his kid the win.

Definitely a competitive gamer if playing against others his age but always lets kids win, even if kids know it. When kids catch him letting them win, he won't try to cover it up, he'll just get shy and say "Ah, yea, ya got me."

Probably the only one of the boys who knows anything about programming and might even be able to do some in Roblox either with or for his kid. If he does end up doing this, he does feel a bit proud of himself and loves making things in game for his kids.

Ryuji Goda

Absolutely dotes on his kids when he gets the chance. You can bet his kids have the latest technology, nice tablets and laptops and all. However, Ryuji is still a dad with limits and won't let his kids have uncontrolled game time.

Although work keeps him busy, he loves to just lounge on the couch with his kids after a long day and see what games they're playing. Won't always say yes to trying out something in Roblox but when he does, his kids absolutely love it.

Totally camps up his behavior and acts extra confused or surprised when playing. Whenever he's done, he gives his kids a giant bear hug before leaving.

Nishikiyama Akira

Nishiki honestly doesn't seem like the type to understand kids at all. This is not to say he isn't loving with his children but he's not as natural as someone like Kiryu is. Having said that, he is decent at video games so it's one of the few activities he feels he can actually participate in with his kids.

Type of guy to sit criss cross apple sauce when spending time with his kids. You think it's super cute which embarrasses him a little, making him blush, but he'll get you back by making you play with him and the kids.

It's cheesy but he always gives his kids a high five when they succeed in a game. If he's only watching instead of playing, he tends to munch on snacks, occasionally tipping the bag of chips towards his kids and shaking it at them as an offering.

Daigo Dojima

Kiryu gets all the dad credit but Daigo is actually dad of the year. It doesn't matter how busy he is, the second he has a kid, he's just smitten. Does his kid have a sports event? He'll skip out on a meeting. Is it his kid's birthday? Everyone is going to know it. His kid wants to play Roblox? He has zero clue what that is but ok!

Daigo is the cuddliest dad. He'll have his kid sitting in his lap while they both hold the tablet, for some reason they're trying to play the game at the same time on the same tablet. You don't know why they don't just have two tablets since you can totally afford it but they're both giggling and smiling all the way, so you let them be.

If you walk in on Daigo playing Roblox with his kid, he'll totally smile at you, beaming, and say "Look what we're doing". If he's ever too tired to game, he'll just say "You go ahead, daddy's feeling too oomph for Roblox today, okay?" while mimicking the death sound effect from the game.

Mine Yoshitaka

Probably has never owned any form of gaming system in his life but as soon as his kid expresses a mild interest in gaming, he is already on the phone with his secretary asking what the heck a Roblox is and how to get it as soon as possible.

Really good at engaging verbally with his kids. Mostly a backseat gamer, watching intently. Will ask questions like "So where are you trying to go" or "Have you tried this map before". Has a great memory of what his kids have done in game and remembers all their achievements.

Out of all the boys, he's the most likely to buy his own individual tablet, laptop, or desktop so he can game with his kids. It's also practical since he can use it for work at other times. Takes a bit of pride in getting the nicest technology for his kids and actually cares about things like hardware and software. Just because a piece of tech is pricey doesn't mean it's good and he's very conscious about that. Type of guy to build a desktop for his kids when they're older.

Ren's backstory in general is kind of a mess! Mom is evil with connections to Team Flare and dad is dead so uh. Whoops.

This blog will occasionally delve into sensitive topics, mostly with ask games and such. The ones that mostly pertain to Ren are: mental abuse by a parent, bullying at the old Uva, the massive shut in arc they had between ages 14-18, underage drinking (they still partake and aren't an alcoholic, but they and the bottom of a bottle go way back, so to speak), and occasional mentions of weed. (they themselves don't do it but a friend and coworker of theirs is a stoner. these posts will be tagged accordingly)

There will be occasional shenanigans with @ribesrubrum! Basically I had Ren befriend a canon character in their Kitakami arc and didn't want to potentially make things awkward, so they will interact occasionally. Don't be alarmed!

listen. i've been fucked up over a completely self-indulgent modern au of these two for a week and i need to expel all the headcanons i've stockpiled or i will actually lose my shit. so this is both '''''canon''''' p/js and the modern au i made up.

pocahontas is demi in both; she had a healthy libido, but she doesn't experience much sexual attraction to others. once she does, tho, it's like a switch goes off and she finds the physical act of love a very fulfilling part of her relationship. i also hc that the other person she's had sexual experience with is nakoma, although it was entirely sexual on her end and not at all romantic (nakoma had a crush on her tho. got a lil messy there). in modern au, she's transgender and what you might call 'fully transitioned.' she prefers to remain stealth, but will talk about her experience in certain circles if she feels comfortable enough to do so (mostly, she's only comfortable talking to john or nakoma about it).

john has a lot going on. he's bi and isn't too conflicted about it in either canon, but in modern au he grew up in a very heteronormative community and family so he has a lil gender crisis going on. he thinks of himself as 'part guy, part not-guy.' they don't really have the benefit of a vocabulary to work this out on their own, so it's a little nebulous. i wanted some 'messy gendered' john, what can i say?

big spoon-little spoon

john is basically made to be big spoon, and pocahontas likes being all snug, but she can step up easily if john's feelin a lil fragile (modern au this happens more often bc of the ptsd i gave him. heehee ;3 ).

lends clothes-borrows clothes

pocahontas can and has borrowed/stolen every piece of clothing john owns.

pet names

pocahontas tends to lean towards using more 'proper' names and addresses just in general; pet names were never much of a thing so much as nicknames were growing up. john, on the other hand, will use a pet name for a houseplant.

introverted-extroverted

pocahontas is quite introverted, and tends to go off on her own a lot to recharge after a big run of interactions (this happens a lot in modern au due to her job). john is generally extroverted, but he can get tired of putting on a 'show' for people after a while.

affection through words-actions

they both use a fairly balanced amount of words and actions, although pocahontas tends to vocalize her feelings more, and john has a big 'acts of service' thing going on once he's got the traction for it.

confessions

john's self esteem is in the ground, so he never confesses first. he just deprioritizes his own feelings in favor of other peoples', so he'll just...not say anything, and assume he'll be told to 'leave' when he's not wanted around anymore. pocahontas confesses to him when she figures this out, and realizes she has to spell it out for him that yES she wants him around oh my god

BUGS

these are pro-bug dorks who will take selfies with the bug before releasing it gently into the wild.

driving

both can drive but neither are particularly good. pocahontas has a motorcycle tho and she's very good on that.

cooking

these two are equally useless when it comes to domestic chores in general, because they get very impatient and lose focus. they literally have to have someone babysitting them throughout any chore or task like cooking or they will Fail so everything from cooking to cleaning the bathroom they HAVE to do together because it's the only way anything will get done. they rely heavily on takeout and nakoma cooking for them, but they do that 'hello fresh' type thing sometimes and it's a whole evening of them following directions to maybe succeed in making something edible. john is only slightly more capable bc he has one (1) sandwich and one (1) recipe for pulled pork that he can pull off on his own.

PDA

this was supposed to be a dual-colored dot lmao but they are equally disgusting as like the type of couple that forgets other people are Watching and will make out in a public park.

protectiveness

pocahontas is generally more protective only bc she knows john doesn't prioritize his own safety/LIFE and will get himself injured if he thinks he can protect someone else. john is closer to chill only bc he generally knows pocahontas is Highly capable of taking care of herself and doesn't really need him to protect her (although he would absolutely die for her if it came down to it)

relationship experience

john actually has some experience, although never anything too serious. pocahontas, being demi and fairly aloof, never had a real relationship before, so she sometimes feels insecure about her part of the relationship.

horny levels

like i said before, pocahontas has a very healthy libido, but low sexual attraction, so once the engine starts in her relationship with john, she's generally On It most of the time. john (being a healthy young man himself) is p happy to try and keep up, but if he's just not able to get there for some reason (overstimulated, depressed, just not feelin the mojo), pocahontas is very good about winding back down to non-sexual forms of affection.

awkwardness levels

they're both fairly awkward people, actually, when you think about it, but in different ways, and in different situations. overall, they balance each other's awkwardness out and make a v good team, socially.

jealousy levels

the aforementioned total absence of john's self esteem also contribute to his lack of jealous tendencies (also, to him, someone else paying a lot of attention to pocahontas is just...normal. like if someone wasn't enchanted by her he'd think they were a lil crazy, kinda way). pocahontas on the other hand, due to her insecurities, can get pretty jealous over john. she's very self-aware about it though, and can curb it with some effort, but she can get too much in her head about it sometimes.

SOME PERSONAL RAMBLING ABOUT ART AND THE FUTURE OF THIS BLOG :-)

For the last year I was working numerous jobs as an artist. I painted landscapes for commission, I did album covers, I was teaching class on comic making basic etc. Unarguably I had a lot of fun doing that!! But it also came at the cost of setting unreasonable expectations upon myself. I really wanted to get into industry ASAP. Like if not now then never. I spent a lot time with people who already released their stuff and heard a lot of advice on how to do it right. So I pressured myself to work on my projects and get at least one thing done till the end of summer. Then life got in the way. I blamed myself a lot for not being able to meet my goals, but I'm unfortunately not in the position to have a lot of time for drawing or writing. If I don't want to work myself to death that is. And the other thing is that I'm also completely fine with it. I need to take some steps back a bit. I want to learn and experience new things not only related to an art career. Live a life, ya know :p (AND THAT'S A GOOD THING!) My stories were always really personal and inspired by people I met or places I've visited and I hope y'all will be able to see them too one day. But I don't want to share them by the cost of my health and mental wellbeing just because I need to prove I'm a "good writer". I want to share them because I find them fun! The stress and unnecessary professionalism also clashed a lot with the initial idea of creating this Tumblr account. Because initially I really wanted to have some sort of archive for my digital work, since I use old computer and it's possible that one day it'll just die on me right here and there and I'm notorious for losing my pendrives. I really wanna get back to this mindset, because from the beginning I was trying to make it the most portfolio-like thing. To make it presentable. Serious and shit. And the thing is that I'm not??? I'm not a serious artist, no matter how much I try to came off as one I still feel like a kid with crayons trying to understand wise painters. And I don't want to set the expectations for myself so high anymore, I'm still really young - especially in comparison to artists who inspired me - and need to start acting like it :P

What I'm saying is that from now on I want this blog to be more scrappy and messy. But I feel like in that way it'll be more honest. I need to stop hiding behind Kniedź as a persona and allow myself to be more open. Because that's just something that comes more natural for me and my following isn't big enough for that to be worrying anyways XD

It is indeed about Kakashi! And, by subplot extension, Sakumo lmao. So Wake the White Wolf was a project I embarked on in late 2018 into early 2019, back in my KakaIru days. It's the longest fic I've ever written, even though it's nowhere near finished - I did 120k in a little over 8 months, and I've never come close to anything like that before.

It was, however, an idea that was too advanced for my skill level at the time, I think. I had a lot of ideas (good ones!) but not the skill to do them justice, which is part of why it's sat in WIP purgatory for the last several years 😭 I've been so busy actually leveling up as a writer and exploring different fandoms that the work it's going to take to breathe new life into the fic was just too much.

Now, however, my Wake the White Wolf document is a beautiful blank page, and also going to be part of my novel-plotting process! I've got a few different plotting methods I'd like to try before I sit down and try to actually puzzle out my novel's plot, and because I know how WWW was supposed to go, I want to do a test run with that story (and then, of course, rewrite it).

There are things I plan to do a little differently this time around, aspects I'd like to flesh out and nail down, but it's been ages since I've really sat down with a Naruto fic and I'm just. Kinda. Giving myself space to feel all right in the fandom again as I work the story out.

Story-wise:

I'm JAZZED AS HELL to really develop the secondary relationships in the fic more. There's a lot of healing to do between Kakashi and Iruka before they really can start to be together (forced marriage trope heehee), and I want both of them to be a little more mature before the turning points really start to hit. I'm especially excited about the IruAnko besties-with-benefits and GenRai "oh, so these relationships CAN work" vision

There's also a great B-plot about Kakashi that has to do with the fic's OC, Sera, and Orochimaru, which was like really vaguely alluded to in what's posted but I'm feral about actually working into the fic.

I wrote this at a time I was really just starting to question my gender and long before I came out as trans, and I think writing the fic (which, looking back, is an exploration of that gender angst) through the lens of a better-adjusted person is going to be a great experience and make for a more coherent, cohesive narrative.

I guess like LONG long story short this is a fic that's haunted me for ages because I really appreciate every single person who's read it but there's also that "fuck, I'm so much better than this" that I just have to GET OVER and rewrite the thing so people can see!!!

Soba's been a delight--I don't think you've met him yet, I gotta introduce you to this guy, and I got a Huntail attached to me (long story) I'm considerin' raisin'; she's a sweetie, real lovebug, though I'm a lil worried about raisin' a whole new type of Pokemon for sure. Like I said, though; no shortages of experiences here! That's for dang sure!

Honestly I can't even say how proud I am of you! this is a huge project to be taken on, even if you say that it's a small think, take it from an ecologist, I know well the work and research it takes to introduce a new species to an established ecosystem- even an artificial one. Don't downplay your achievements, dear, they're something to be proud of. I can see already that you're going to have quite the promising career in whatever direction that this leads you.

it's like. good media is just good right it's like. it's like you experience a thing and it's a flawless and well-crafted experience and you have it the way you're meant to have it but there's a bit of me that's like... suspicious of authors who know too well what they're doing. i feel like I'm falling into their sick little trap when i analyse the themes of the text bc I'm like you wanted me to do that you put the food in the fucking puzzle feeder for me to find well now I'm not gonna. also i think the best like the very best crunchy symbolic work comes from authors who are mashing aesthetics and vibes and concepts together and fixing them up with cellotape and toothpicks and it's all going to fall apart like that's the kind of media i like to sink my teeth into bc then i get to REALLY participate in the text. the good stuff is just, it's just satisfying, it's complete before it got to me. but the slightly messy stuff? i wanna fix her up lovingly i wanna bandage her plot holes and kiss her mischaracterization with tongue and really get in on the action with her themes because what i say there MATTERS it changes the text in a way it doesn't with things that are good. a new, interesting interpretation of a messy text is altering to the original. a good and interesting interpretation of a good text is intended. it's not fun anymore. part of the essential fun of fandom is ripping something out of the creator's hands and turning it into your own city with your own rules. not starting over, but starting fresh. and with the things where i genuinely feel like reading it in a new way is letting me bring something new to the text the thrill of it is different, it's deeper. basically the plot needs to be porous as all hell for me to grow roots into it.

Misconception: He didn't love his brother. Is that.... True?

send me a misconception you think people have about my character and I’ll explain if it’s true or not.

heehee. so i'm gonna say heated things in this post, anon, and it's not because you asked the question. i love this question. when i strawman in here i'm referencing things i've seen in the tags and on other social media over the years. anyways, my first response when people bring this up is usually. that is an extremely complex thing to ask a teenager in michael's position. now, i'm not saying michael is The Victim, given that evan is literally dead. i'm extremely pro-michael responsibility. while it looks like the argument over whether or not he's the bully brother has died off somewhat ( or maybe i've just cultivated my experience a bit better lol ) i used to see so many Fourth Afton Siblings and it drove me insane. i craved that moral ambiguity, that is to say the ambiguity of the action / motivation, and the cloud that it left hanging over michael's story. i liked how it served a narrative where michael callously disregarded his sibling's safety and it got him killed, only for michael to try to be the best brother he could to his sister and lose her anyways, and in much the same way. i loved that michael wasn't perfect and rankled at the push for him to be distanced from the incident because it felt like people weren't willing to say that michael could be both a victim of abuse and a bully who got a kid mauled by taking a malicious prank too far.

which brings me back to the complexity. while it does not excuse michael's actions and certainly doesn't bring evan back, i don't think it's... disrespectful? choosing a side?? to say that michael was also in a bad situation. like. based solely off what we see in the games, michael and evan are on their own. we always see them home alone in an empty house. evan walks to and from freddy's without supervision ( not super unusual, but also something that, at the time, was becoming less common -- i like it as a prelude to the mci, where parents would stop allowing their children to go out alone ). he's spending time at a venue he not just dislikes, but is terrified of, on the regular -- and we don't know why, but i've always assumed that either william is bringing him to work with him or michael is dragging him there after school ( with evan then being free to walk home if he wants to, but he's also clearly discouraged from doing so, given the number of times he tries to 'escape' ). and now he's having his birthday party there. at the very least, his father is negligent. the only family member we see him with is michael.

we're entering headcanon territory now, so be warned of that. while i do a lot of research to back this up, i will also be upfront in saying that i'm spinning a narrative because i think it's appropriate for the setting and want to explore it. hence, there's nothing authoritative here, and i understand if it's not people's cup of tea. that said, michael is the oldest afton sibling. in a lot of places, especially that part of america, eldest / older children are expected to help raise their younger siblings. given that we don't see william around, let alone a mother, i've always come away with the impression that michael was left with a lot of the daily care of the kids. get them to and from school, help with their homework, make sure they shower and brush their teeth, etc. to some people that may sound extreme or dramatic, but it's reality for a lot of kids. they're made to grow up more quickly than their siblings or only children out of necessity. this isn't a blanket judgment of this practice, because 1) utah is not the only place on earth this happens and the cultural context in other places is different, so i don't want to smear that and 2) teaching children some responsibility is not necessarily a bad thing in my eyes.

it is, however, a lot of pressure on a kid. i've made michael four years older than evan and eight years older than elizabeth. those aren't insignificant age gaps, but while he slots more 'naturally' into that parental role for his sister, he and evan are much closer in age. he's twelve when evan is eight, fifteen when evan is eleven ( where i've placed the birthday party in the timeline ). he wants to be hanging out with friends and doing his own thing, and he's being held back ( in his mind ) by having to watch his siblings and, horror of horrors, take his brother with him when he goes places. probably not unusual for where they're living, again, but still. this would normally lead to some inter-sibling resentment, but there are additional layers to this.

one, i think michael struggles in school due to his situation at home. i think both the absence of his parents and the responsibility of watching his siblings are crunching his brain, and he's mentally ill and dyslexic in a school system not designed to accommodate him. if he doesn't make sure his brother's homework gets done, he gets in trouble. forget his own homework. if william and diane are working late, he's responsible for dinner. then he has to get them to bed. once that's done, he can do his own work / shower / whatever else he needs to do. he's exhausted.

two, he is being abused. the degree to which varies from person to person but this is my blog and i say that william was physically abusive. not only do i think there's more than enough evidence of this in the games ( midnight motorist, his comfort killing children when he has kids of his own ), but secondary research has all but proven to me that you almost never see cases of child killing without abuse going on in the house. you just. as a baseline. are not simultaneously a kind parent and a child murderer. to have your own children and to be comfortable killing somebody else's children may seem like two separate things in fiction, which is why i'm not against people saying that william was 'only a little' / not physically abusive, but in real life that just... doesn't happen. and my blog for the sci-fantasy horror series about possessed bear robot is historically inspired so we all just have to live with that.

a few things with the abuse, though. firstly, michael is learning violence in the home. he is being conditioned to accept physical harm as the norm, and his father is setting the example that the right way to cope with your emotions is to lash out. and not only is mike experiencing the normal heightened emotional state of puberty, he's angry and confused and upset because his father is mistreating him. he's being hurt and he has no one to appeal to ( another big historical theme for me: a lack of intervention in hurricane; not their children, not their problem, and heaven forbid someone tell another man how to run his household! ), he can't get away from it unless he wants to pack up a little rucksack and flee ( i do believe this happened at least once and he quickly got found and returned to his parents ), so he just has to sit. and stew in it. and not understand why it's happening. because there is no good reason for it. i'm very much not like. 'william abused michael because michael acted out!' the opposite, in fact. michael acted out because he was being abused -- and because he was a teenager! and that idea always rubbed me the wrong way because, to be quite honest, abusive parents do not need a 'reason' to hurt their kids. they don't need an inciting incident. i know parents are people, but abusive parents -- parents with a pattern of violence -- are gonna do what they do regardless of how their kids act. they can say there's a reason for it, but if there isn't? they'll invent one. so there shall be no 'mike was a bully and william started punishing him more harshly' here.

secondly, michael has to cope with his situation differently than his siblings. evan is a crybaby -- and rightfully so, given what he's going through! he also lives with an abusive father, though i don't believe he's william's usual target; that house is a nightmare and he is in it with the rest of them. plus, his brother bullies him! i would cry! but i think the crying is something that michael grows to resent very quickly. michael isn't 'allowed' to cry; he's a 'man', his father expects more from him. michael 'has it worse' than evan, so what does evan even have to cry about? michael doesn't cry when he gets mistreated, and 'nobody's' mistreating evan. evan, as far as michael is concerned, is being waited on hand-and-foot by him. he's the one helping with the homework and tying the shoelaces and walking him to school and picking him up at the end of the day. he's the one losing sleep and weekends with friends to take care of him. what the fuck could evan ever have to cry about? by that logic, maybe michael should give him something to cry about -- like william gives him something to cry about. because that's what real men do.

thirdly, as implied above, michael is the barrier. he's the oldest, he's the one who looks like william, he's the puberty-riddled mentally ill punk-leaning problem child. he is his father's target of choice. and i think he took pride in that fact when it first began, that he could take it, that he could serve as a shield. but he's a child and that didn't last long. how could it? he was being hurt. he just does not have the capacity to be like, 'no, i can do this for their sakes and be happy about it, it's good that it's me and not them.' few adults can do that without developing resentment for the people they're 'defending' ( especially when that's not what's really happening -- they're not 'defending' their siblings / children / etc. from anything, they're just being attacked ). but michael can't fight back against william. william is a grown adult and his father. so he gets mad at the only person he can do anything against in this equation: the other victim.

so we have a kid at an age where he normally wouldn't want to be hanging out with his younger brother, but he doesn't really have a choice. maybe some teasing would be normal, but this boy has been subjected to violence, and has, in his frustration and confusion, turned this violence upon his only feasible target. and it is violent. it's horrible. but is this hatred? is this evidence that michael hates his brother? i don't think so. i think they are in a fucking horrendous situation and they're just trying to survive. i don't think removed and sweeping concepts like 'michael loves his brother' or 'michael hates his brother' ( as if the two are mutually exclusive? ) apply here. michael took care of his brother. you could call that love. michael tormented his brother. you could call that hate. michael intended to frighten and maybe even hurt evan, but not to kill him, and it still resulted in evan's death. did he do it out of hate? if hate here is shorthand for 'a desire to see evan dead', no. if it's 'a desire to make evan uncomfortable and upset', maybe!

but like. i dunno. abusive households are like a pocket dimension. you need years of therapy to unpack that shit. i don't think sitting down and casting judgment on michael based on whether or not one believes that he 'hated' his brother is fair or worthwhile. with all that going on above, it's not even a thought exercise i'm interested in, if the end goal is to rank michael as a Good or Bad person. rather, i want to explore what would lead to an incident like that. maybe michael loved his brother, but in that house, expressing that love in any sort of healthy way was not an option. and that's far more compelling to me than 'michael was born bad' or 'michael is an unfeeling monster'.

3. Do you share your fic ideas, or do you keep them to yourself?

Usually with close friends, or sometimes places like twitter if I've got something I really can't keep to myself. Usually if I do it's in discord servers though, because (as I mentioned in the last ask) sometimes having a sounding board is exactly what you need in order to bring a fic from an idea to something solid. Ultimately though I don't like to share the gorey details of what I'm working on publicly because I find it usually psyches me out of actually working on it, or builds up anticipation for things I end up not following through with.

21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

I'll be honest I don't have a solid answer to this one! It honestly just depends on what I'm in the mood to write. It's been nice having a big project on the go again but sometimes I only have the drive to write oneshots and that's okay too. Truth be told I've only written two long form fics and abandoned one more but the entire experience is pretty different from writing oneshots, which I've written a LOT of.

A couple fics that are heavily based on personal experience, "The Clause of Human Nature" in particular. I'm also really struggling with my next Tales longfic because i'm really burned out on Tales at the moment so I'm shelving it, but I don't know if that counts lol

4. How many different styles/medium (e.g., digital art, traditional art, comics, sculpture, paper craft, etc.) did you try this year?

on the diversity of media front, i feel like i stagnated a little! i used to have a lot more breadth, but this year like 98% of my work was done with procreate, and the other 2% were very occasional pencil/pen doodles that i then spruced up in procreate ahaha!! but honestly i'm not too arsed about this, like the sheer volume of art i made this year is so much higher than usual, entirely bc messing around w procreate and the specific hyperfixations i've had this year really inspired me to keep throwing myself at drawings again and again until i got it right—which has translated into a lot of skill growth, which i honestly could not be happier about!!!!!

10. What inspired/motivated you this year?

content-wise, the goblin emperor was my main artistic motivator (specifically my own goddamn au s;alkdfjaow;if), but i'm also really learning how to create my own original works as expressions of various emotional experiences i'm shufflin my way through lately.

also (and i've said this already recently but it bears saying again) literally i looked at @littleowlbub 's concept art for their new comic, prism, and i fell deeply and madly in love with how they draw hands—they're like... so expressive and lovely, but what really sets them apart for me is this sense that there's joy in the simple act of drawing them. their hands are, for me, the visual equivalent of taking that first full breath of fresh air at the start of a hike in the blue ridge mountains ;lakjdfaef like, god, i look at a few of the drawings of spectrum specifically and just feel love and peace in my own existence as a tactile being, idk!!!! this is all a lot of weight to put on the way someone draws hands, but it's WHERE I'M AT and honestly it has really inspired me to find my own ways of creating that feeling with the hands i draw, and i have a long road ahead still but the results are so visible to me, and i'm so so excited about that progress!!!

14. What's one pairing/character/subject/body part/object you want to explore next year?

pairing(s): hrmm honestly i've been eyeballing my internal visualization of evemer and kadou from @ariaste 's A Taste Of Iron and Gold, like i am itchin to draw them a whole whole bunch

characters: it's become a pathological need to figure out how to simplify eddie entertainment munson's dumb face down to a few brush strokes, like i've done so much noodling to try to figure out what it is exactly that makes his face his face—is it the full lips? the angle of his eyes? the sparse eyebrows? the laugh lines? nose, the particular contours of his 3/4 profile?? who the fuck knows!!! but i will figure it out or i will die trying!!!!!!!!

subject: really digging my vent pieces so i fully intend to keep honing that style and the sort of. idk creative muscles that go into funneling big emotions into little eyestrain-y guys

body part: see my tender screeching about hands above. also really working on understanding legs. why are they like that. whose idea was that.

Hi there, anon! 💌 Welcome~! Thank you so much for reaching out and sending an ask from Wattpad to Tumblr. Heehee.

To be honest, after I went on a hiatus (prolly took me years that I went on a hiatus here in Tumblr) the engagement I have rn for Tumblr nosedived into the ground. (It was also my fault for not posting consistently and went inactive for personal and life reasons and probably because I've entered a new fandom all of a sudden) I basically use Tumblr rn just for the sake of posting my stories and for first draft purposes in case Wattpad decides to take down any of my stories that I plan to write with an NSFW content.

I also have been receiving tons of spam bots/pooorn bots rn for no reason. It stopped before but now they're back.

It also depends on the fandom you're in. There are fandoms whom are quiet. There are also fandoms who are positively active in such where they engage a lot through fanfics/posts whether you're a writer or not (reblog, comments and leave hearts on posts).

Though, for my case, my answer rn would be Wattpad. (If you're a writer too) I have more engagements there. It's probably because I write multi-chapter fics which makes it easier for people to read em' with every update I publish? I've also been seeing people adding my current fanfic books on their public reading lists. (which feels a lot like the reblogs you get here in Tumblr)

One-shots/short fanfics are better to be posted here tho. Those type of stories are a hit. 🔥 People seem to like em' a lot here. However, if you write multi-chapter fics like me and want consistent engagement, Wattpad is better. (In my opinion and experience)

But, why not have the best of both worlds? So here I am, posting on both sites for those who don't have Wattpad. Hehe. 🤣 I rarely get engagement here now and I appreciate those people so much who reach out to me for anything to talk about no matter the topic may be 💌

(I mostly write for the sake of keeping my ideas and emotions sane now. I keep on daydreaming about certain scenes every night and it makes me restless so I have to write them down for my mental peace and constant fangirling crazes. 🤣)
