Became curious based on a Smaugust piece: What are your thoughts on everyone's favorite royal suck-up, Pike? (also ofc compliments to your writing and art)
Surprise, I am still kicking. And thus my Sisyphean quest to answer all the questions in my inbox continues.
I like Pike. I used to think moderately favorably of him, but pondering this question and then drawing a bunch of pictures of and about him made me realize that, yeah, I am rather fond of him. He is funny and cute in the same way a small, yappy dog is.
I remember once talking to my partner about Pike and I asked: "Do you think the JMA staff has to deal with Pike constantly trying to sleep in the hallway in front of Anemone's room?" Only to then realize, upon re-reading the books, that this actually happens in canon. I was thrilled.
Most of the time when people ask me what I think of a character, they want to hear what my take on them is, so I'll get into that.
Background
I don't think a lot is known about Pike's life, outside him having been assigned as Anemone's (questionably) covert bodyguard. He is one of those background characters that fill out the student roster at JMA but don't get a lot of development, though he is one of the more lucky ones as he gets comparatively more lines and scenes than, say, Barracuda, or Garnet.
We don't ever hear about his home life or familial situation, but I think he comes from a common military family. Not a particularly prestigious one, but rather one of middling significance. I imagine one of his ancestors--like his great grandmother--once made it to captain and ever since the whole family has prided themselves on their military legacy and loyalty to the Seawing throne, even though nobody else really knows who they are.
Pike's parents are both bottom rung palace guards; trusted enough to be stationed vaguely near the seat of government over a remote outpost, but nothing more. As is tradition in their family, they signed up as soon as they were old enough to hold a trident. Pike was expected to follow in their footsteps, and so did the same. He is naturally eager to please, doesn't ask many questions, and knows how to follow orders, so he took to this life relatively well.
One thing immediately apparent when observing Pike is that he is very blunt, headstrong, and reckless. He is prone to self-injury and mishaps, routinely making a tail end of himself during exercises. One day, I imagine, he was out in the courtyard, practicing his combat maneuvers, when he somehow managed to trap himself underneath a training dummy in a humiliating way. Unbeknownst to him, the Queen and Princess were walking past a window overlooking this scene, and the latter happened to spot him.
Princess Anemone, starved for normal social contact due to being permanently leashed to her overbearing mother, immediately took a liking to the clumsy guard and wished to take Pike into her service. The Queen though, hated the idea. Anything she couldn't control with 100% certainty was not to be let near her only living daughter. She didn't even let her own sons approach the Princess for this very reason. So she refused.
But Anemone, sensing an opportunity to finally snatch a tiny mote of control over her own life, didn't relent. She would never overtly defy her mother, but pushed back against her in the most passively aggressive way she could muster. She WOULD have this one thing that was hers, no matter how many times she had to sigh wistfully or forget to eat.
Coral meanwhile still disliked the idea, but after some pondering figured this could work to her advantage. Granting her daughter this favor would make her grateful, and thus easier to keep in check. It was not like the boy would be able to do anything undesirable since she would always be there to watch anyway. And if he ever displeased her, a random guard was easier to dispose of without turning heads, than if she let Anemone play with one of her brothers.
So eventually, she acquiesced, and extracted Pike from the palace guard to assign him to her daughter's protection.
The news hit Pike's family like lightning. Suddenly, after decades of being nobodies with delusions of grandeur, the whole palace was paying genuine attention to them, and the new recruit who, overnight, got assigned to be the Princess' personal retainer. Pike's parents took him aside and impressed on him how important of a task this was. If he did his job well and kept the Princess content and safe, not only would the current Queen think favorably of all of them, but Anemone would remember his service and reward him once she took the throne herself. For his sake and theirs, this was an opportunity not to be squandered.
And thus, Pike shouldered this great responsibility suddenly thrust onto his wings and embraced being Anemone's personal servant and protector. Pushed forward by his sense of honor and loyalty, a desire not to disappoint his family, and the knowledge that, if he were to fail and lose the only heir, Queen Coral would surely kill him.
Day-to-day life
Pike takes his duty very seriously, both out of loyalty to his liege, and because of how much is at stake for him personally. I picture him getting up during the small hours each morning and beginning his daily exercise routine, to stay in shape for his job. His roommate Flame often wakes up to him noisily doing squats in the middle of the sleeping cave and yells at him. "Am I cursed to be tormented by a diminutive idiot Seawing wherever I go!??!" Pike is lucky that his other roommate, Bigtail, is a heavy sleeper. Otherwise the training session would likely be cut short, with Pike tied to the ceiling lamp.
After wrecking Flame's sleep, Pike usually seeks out Anemone and attempts to stay near her at all times. Initially this caused friction between him and the teachers, as he would often skip his own classes to attend Anemone's. He only stopped doing this when Tsunami made it clear skipping classes would get him sent home, and thus away from Anemone permanently.
As they spent time at the Academy, the Princess began to get better and better at giving Pike the slip whenever she got fed up with his overprotectiveness. He freaks out whenever she vanishes, which is often. To help manage his stress, the JMA staff make him attend regular seminars on inner peace and meditation hosted by Fatespeaker. He is not very good at it, but enjoys the exercises that involve listening to running water.
He began to mellow out for a bit after initial growing pains, until the History cave incident occurred. The bombing shook him back into the bodyguard mindset and he began sleeping in the hallway outside of Anemone's sleeping cave. It weirds out Ostrich whenever she has to climb over him. Attempts to get him to stop this have been unfruitful. The current policy seems to be to let him do this until things calm down and he stops on his own.
Anything else
I believe Pike may have a thing for Rainwings. He is generally hyper-aggressive and rude towards everyone he talks to, with two notable exceptions. One of them is Anemone, whom he is sworn to serve and keep safe. The other is Tamarin, whom he is uncharacteristically kind to. My personal impression is that he may have a bit of a crush on her, but keeps himself from pursuing it as to not upset Anemone.
To my knowledge, Pike never really interacts with Turtle. That is a shame, because I would like to know how they would get along. Pike may be greatly disappointed at Turtle's general un-regal-ness, but still begrudgingly respect him out of obligation. I can picture a scene where he berates Turtle for his demeanor, only for someone else to chime in with an affirmative "Yeah Turtle, you suck", upon which Pike turns around and starts ripping into them about disrespecting Seawing royalty.
Concerningly, Pike's future is very uncertain. He is actually in grave danger right now. If Queen Coral ever finds out that he allowed a murderous, seawing-hating ancient wizard to abduct Anemone, she will have some opinions on that. If Coral has one consistent character trait, it is homicidal vengefulness against anyone who fails to protect her children, regardless of circumstance, regardless even if the perpetrator IS one of her children. That means there is a very real chance she will recall Pike from Jade Mountain and try to tear him apart.
I don't think Anemone would allow this to happen, mind you. She has been privy to her mother dragging poor sods out to the plaza to rip their teeth out, enough to recognize the signs of it coming. If she suspected Pike's life was in danger, I believe she would prevent him from leaving.
For now though, he remains at Jade Mountain, doing the best he can with the responsibility he was dealt, acting as Princess Anemone's retainer. It is a difficult, stressful, at times thankless job, but he would not have it any other way.
"Honor, and duty."

Young!Price x f!younger!reader
when you and ExHusband!Price start dating 😋
*pretty short
“Right there?” You lean down to murmur in his ear. “Does that feel good?”
“Fuck… right there, sweetheart...” John groans.
You giggle from your seat on John’s backside, knees on either side of his hips as you massage his lower back. He had been complaining about how bad it has been aching and swore only your hands could fix him.
You lean down and press a few kisses to his shoulder before going back to working out the tension in his muscles.
John sighs in content.
“Y’know, I had the worst dream last night.” You mention casually, placing your hands palm down on his waist and rubbing circles with your thumbs.
“Did you?” John’s voice was a bit muffled by the pillow his face was resting against. “What was it about?”
"I met this really, really beautiful man at the bar, got him to take me home, really got to like him… and then he went back to London I never saw him again." You sigh dramatically.
It takes John a moment to realize that you're joking, catching on at the exaggerated sigh. He tries not to laugh but he's only human.
John shifts to lay on his back now, but pulls you back to him so you can still sit on top, straddling his lap.
“Sounds like a nightmare.” John grins, his hands slowly rubbing up and down your bare thighs. “Suppose we can't repeat that mistake then?"
You shake your head, a smile on your lips as you look down at him. John shakes his head back at you, that signature smirk still on his face.
"Is it crazy that I think I actually really like you?" Your brow furrows a bit. “We’ve only known each other for a few days…”
He lets out a little laugh; you can see him blush a little bit in his cheeks.
"'s not crazy," He says softly, his hands now moving from your thighs to your waist, slipping under his shirt that you were wearing. “I like you.”
"Hmm… But you're a military guy.” Your head tilts to the side in thought. “Aren't military guys, like, known for proposing after the first date?"
This actually makes him laugh out loud again, his eyes crinkling in the corners. He can't help himself; this stereotype has always been such a common one.
"Right, but I'm not that kind of military guy.... l'd at least wait until the second date."
"Well," you move off of John to lay on your back next to him on your bed. "When the time comes, I don't want one of those big, ugly silver and diamond rings. Maybe a pearl or a garnet or something." You lift your left hand up in the air above you both, as if imagining the ring on it.
John continues to smile as you talk about the potential future. The idea that you're thinking about that kind of stuff when you've only just met seems funny to him, but almost… romantic, in a way.
When you lift your hand, he can't help but imagine how that ring would look on it. He can see the ring so clearly in his mind's eye; simple 14 karat gold band, emerald cut garnet in the middle.
You lower your arm back to your side and turn to look at him. "I really do think I like you." You sigh like it’s disappointing. "This isn't normally how my random bar hookups go."
“Y’ haven’t been hookin’ up with the right guys.” John counters.
You study his face, taking in all the little details; those blue eyes you love, the little freckle on his nose, the two tiny marks above and below his eyebrow that made you wonder if teenage John was a little punk with an eyebrow piercing.
You sit up suddenly and get off of your bed. You strip John’s shirt off of yourself and toss it to him. “You should go.”
John is understandably confused. He sits up, shirt in hand, waiting for an explanation. “Did I do something wrong..?”
“No,” You shake your head, looking through your closet. “You’re going to go get dressed, buy me some flowers, and take me on our first date.”
John doesn’t speak. He’s stunned.
You look over your shoulder at him. “What? If I want that second-date proposal, we need the first date out of the way.”
John’s eyebrows raise. You’re fucking crazy…
You’re fucking made for him.
“Oh, and don’t get tulips.” You add casually, pulling a little sundress out of the closet and looking it over. “I hate tulips.”
“Yes ma’am.” John nods, pulling his shirt on over his head.
You grin. “So obedient. Must be the military training.”

Fandom: Steven Universe Rating: Gen Words: 2.8K~ Summary: Not too long after making peace with Homeworld and sparking the start of Era 3, Steven wakes up one morning to discover some... notable changes about himself.
AKA: The one where Steven finally hits his growth-spurt. All at once. Because of course the half-Gem kid could never experience such a human thing like puberty in a "normal" way.
[Part 1 of 2]
Just a few seconds later, knuckles rap against the door in answer to his perturbed cry.
“Yo Steve-o, that you in there?” Amethyst calls.
“Y-yeah?” he stammers. His brows threading inwards, he delicately runs his fingers over the ridge upon his throat, very much thrown off by the distinctly lower tenor of the sound coming from his own mouth. He swallows hard, pushing himself to speak again. Come on Steven, he berates himself, think of something lighthearted. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing. No need to completely freak out over this yet. “Who else would I be? It’s not like the whole town uses this bathroom…”
“I mean, I do sometimes. For fun.”
“Okay, fair point, but—”
“Dude, what’s wrong with your voice? Are you like, sick or somethin’?“
“No, it’s just—”
He squeezes his eyes shut, blocking out all the nebulous, spinning distractions of his mind and the world beyond. Deep breath. It’s okay. Tons of things about his form may be entirely different right now, but like… he seems fine. Right?? Nothing about his body feels tangibly wrong like it did when he willfully stretched himself out on his 14th birthday, or when he changed all his fingers into cats, or when he lost all control of his aging and morphed into an anciently old man and almost died, it’s just…
New.
New and wholly unfamiliar.
So what now? How can he bravely move forward with all this? What does he need to know?
“Have, uh… have you ever shapeshifted by accident in your sleep?”
“Not that I‘m aware of,” she says, and he can practically hear the shrug in her tone. “Shapeshifting is a conscious thing you do. It’s a choice, y’know? It doesn’t just happen.”
A good long moment passes as he drinks this information in. He runs his hand through the short curls at the back of his neck as he stands there in the pair of too-small banana yellow pajamas he fit in just fine last night, musing.
“Huh… I guess that makes things pretty simple, then.”
“What d’ya’—”
“Amethyst, I think Im finally older,” he says, still absolutely mystified by this prospect as he gawks at himself in the mirror.
She gives a fond laugh. “Ch’a, right? You get older everyday, bud. Wild.”
“No, I mean I’m actually, physically older! Look!”
Steven whirls around and swings the bathroom door wide open to show her. Amethyst’s jaw drops.
“Whoa—! Dude!”
Chuckling nervously, he steps a few feet out, wriggling his bare toes against the wood floor. “I know, right?”
“What the heck, you weren’t kidding!” Before he can even move to say anything else, she spins on her heels and cups her mouth with her hands, hollering towards the temple door. “HEY, PEARL! GARNET! You gotta get out here and see this!”
His brows shoot towards his hairline, his heart hammering in his chest all the while at the thought of all the dumb show-and-tell he’s gonna have to deal with now. “Aww, come on, did you really have to—”
“Amethyst!” Pearl cries, scrambling through the still opening gap in the doorway with Garnet striding mere steps behind. She summons her spear from her gem and swings it to fighting stance with an artful flourish. “What happened? Where’s the threat? What do you need us for??”
Steven darts towards them, hands held up in a placating plea.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! There’s no danger! We’re fine. I just—”
“Oh, my stars—!” she gasps, allowing her spear to dissipate in a glittery flicker of light. “You’ve grown!”
“Nice look, Steven,” Garnet nods, a supportive smile gracing her lips.
“And you’re sure this is real this time? You’re not—?”
“No, no, I’m not stretching myself out, I promise. I just woke up like this.”
“B-but—” Pearl taps her fingers against her chin, appearing thoroughly puzzled— “I thought humans were supposed to age gradually, not all at once.”
Steven’s shoulders slump. “Well… that’s what I assumed too, but—”
“Come, sit with me,” Garnet says, walking around the warp pad to enter the living room. She sets herself down on the couch, patting the cushion in open invitation.
With a heavy, far too weary for his age sigh, Steven shoves his hands in the pockets of his too-small banana pajamas and plods his way over. The rest of the Gems follow suit. He settles himself right next to Garnet, with Pearl perched opposite to her and Amethyst happily lounging on the floor, leaning on the coffee table with her elbows.
“Steven’s aging hasn’t aligned with the norms of humanity for a very long time,” she observes, a glint of morning sun that’s beaming through the window catching on the edge on the edge of her star shaped visor. Then, turning to him: “I’m curious why you think this is.”
He hums, considering all the chaotic happenings of the past few years. Despite the rare query she poses, he gets the sense that… in her vast wisdom… she already knows the answer. Or at least, a small sum of it. It should be noted that her future vision— as far-reaching as it otherwise is with the vast possibilities of existence— can’t ever touch any knowledge that she won’t be conscious for or present to receive, let alone retroactively scry into the past.
(And honestly? Thank goodness for that.)
“I’m not sure,” he says, a half-lie.
He can think of one reason he might’ve started aging again. Though, it’s not something he’s ready to talk to the Gems about yet. It’s… far too delicate a topic to risk bringing up so soon after the start of peaceful Era 3. But after spending a whole childhood being constantly compared to and mistaken as various versions of his mom… let’s just say, having his gem torn from his body and getting to see it reform into a version of himself (and not her) was simultaneously the worst and the best thing that could’ve ever happened to him. While undeniably traumatic, this experience served as the ultimate proof that he doesn’t have to waste another second of his existence chewing away at some burgeoning identity crisis, that he can live his life however he wants. As Steven. Not as Rose, or Pink Diamond, just… Steven.
He’s not exactly sure how all this mental weirdness translates into him staying stuck looking like a little kid for like… six or so years, but after he returned home from his latest escapade on Homeworld, he could sense that— despite all the messed up stuff he and Connie went through— his spirit was lighter, somehow.
So maybe, he thinks, he simply had to peel away at all the damaged layers of his identity to ready himself to move on to the next stage of his life. Maybe he had to stare death in the eye and pass through the heart of the storm in spite of all these hardships before he could piece the foundational truths of his story back together and learn to finally live again.
To start shifting his hopeful gaze towards the dawn of their bright, sunny future…
“I mean, I always kinda thought he stopped aging because we never did,” Amethyst says then, laying her cheek on the table. “Like, it happened around the time you moved in with us, yeah?”
He purses his lips, scanning his memory. “Uh… I think so? It might have been a year before. Two, even. But I was definitely hanging out with y’all a lot by then.”
She leans over and playfully slugs him in the arm.
“See, there you go! You always wanted to be just like us when you were a kid, so much that you even wore that same ol’ star shirt every day to match ours, ha! You must’ve wanted to be a Gem so badly that you subconsciously stopped becoming older at all.”
“That’s actually a pretty solid theory, Amethyst,” Pearl chimes in. “Good thinking!”
“We have seen you shift your form in response to your perception of others around you,” Garnet says with a nod. “This has caused you to temporarily age and shapeshift in the past, but for you to age in a stable way now, your perception of self must have stabilized, too. I’m very happy for you, Steven.”
She tousles his mess of curls with her gold ringed hand, a welcome little offering of affection that he eagerly leans into.
And then, out of nowhere, Amethyst starts cackling.
“Dude,” she blurts out between her peels of laughter, nudging his foot with her elbow, “I just realized— Greg’s gonna totally lose his shit when he sees this…”
Pearl’s expression scrunches inwards with prickly displeasure. “Language!”
“What, it’s true!”
He waves Amethyst’s comment off. “Pshhh, my dad’s seen way weirder,” he says, rolling his eyes. “Like, did I ever tell y’guys how the cat fingers incident ended?”
“No!” the quartz exclaims with intensive fervor, and leans forward in anticipation. “Gimme the juicy deets, m’man!”
Garnet adjusts her visor then, her features falling into a dutiful line. “Speaking of Greg… story time can wait until later. Steven— if you want to see your father this morning, you need to head over there now… or there’s a good chance he’ll fall back asleep until one and you’ll miss your window.”
Amethyst’s lips fall into a pout as she slumps back against the foot of the couch, her arms crossed. “Awww, phooey. Spoil sport.”
He swallows a grimace as he internalizes Garnet’s prediction. Yeah, that sounds about right. That’s become a bad habit for his old man lately, staying up super late and then sleeping in almost half the day on weekends. Ever since he received that ten million dollar residues check it’s nothing that can hinder his financials anymore, thank goodness, but then again…
“Yeah… I should probably go make sure he wakes up,” he mutters, pushing his tired body off his seat. “I’ll need his help finding new clothes, anyways.”
The second he’s up and moving again, Amethyst darts around him and snatches his spot with such swift and viscous drive that one might believe this ploy were her sole quest and purpose in life. She stretches out against the seat back with a big, dramatic yawn, crossing her arms behind her head as she speaks.
“It’s too bad you can’t just… I dunno… summon whatever clothes you want out of light, like us. That’s like the biggest bummer of humanity, if you ask me.”
“And when do you ever experiment with your outfit enough to have a strong opinion about this?” Pearl prods, crossing her arms. “It took you almost a decade to fix that asymmetrical shoulder strap.”
“Well, P… I like to think of myself as a Gem who would experiment with my outfit. One day. If I’m ever really, really bored. Consider it an Era 3 aspiration.”
Steven rocks back and forth on his heels, absentmindedly fiddling with the fraying bottom hem of his pajama top.
“Okay, uh… well, I’m gonna dress to leave now, so—”
“Yeah, see ‘ya.”
“Send a text if you need anything!” Pearl says with a casual wave.
“And don’t forget…” Garnet begins, the ellipses in her tone practically visible with the naked eye.
He pauses in his dutiful march to the stairs— (a somewhat unsteady march… as it turns out, shooting up about a foot and a half in height overnight tends to impact one’s sense of balance for the worst, go figure)— turning back to intercept whatever life advice or future vision she’s prepared for him this time.
She grins, flashing him a quick heart with her hands instead. “We love you!”
~~
Steven trudges across the hot sands to his dad’s car wash sans his favorite flip flops, trying his very darnedest to wipe away the developing grimace on his face all the while.
A small segment of him felt overjoyed when he first saw his reflection this morning, eager to look his age and finally grow up alongside his human friends. But after struggling to find anything that fits him even halfway right in his wardrobe, his good mood has rapidly spoiled. There’s a decent few reasons for this.
Reason number one: his old sandals are at least two sizes too small. His heels stick out over the end now, and the plastic thong digs into his toes something terrible. He literally can’t wear them without giving himself blisters. Ergo, his bare feet right now.
Reason number two: none of his jeans sit right around the waist anymore, plus they make him look like he’s waiting for a flood. (Though thankfully, he found a stretchy blue skirt buried in one of his drawers that will do the trick for now.)
And perhaps worst of all… reason number three: with his newly increased height, every single one of his treasured star shirts have been turned into ill-fitting crop tops, putting his gem on full display. He’s not against the concept of a crop top, but it sure ain’t a look he’s passionate about for everyday wear. It just feels… too exposing. Like, what about winter?? He can’t bear his whole midriff in winter, he’d freeze, and like… get hypothermia, or something. And not only that, but the longer he’s awake this morning the more an inescapable, thrumming ache starts to settle within the deepest core of his body, like even his bones themselves— the stubborn things— dare to object to this abrupt growth spurt.
Just… ugh. What an annoying hassle all these changes bring.
“Stupid shirt,” he grouses, tugging at the too-tight collar, “stupid sandals, stupid Gem puberty! Why, oh why can’t I ever go through human stuff normally?”
His bare foot catches upon a sizable stone hidden amongst the beach. On any other day he would’ve successfully broken his fall, stumbling forwards a few awkward steps before regaining his balance and continuing on his way. But with his body now so different, and his center of gravity entirely off from what he’s used to, he head plants straight into the ground.
Wow, he thinks, spitting sand out of his mouth and pushing himself back to his feet. How elegant. Truly the shining paragon of coordination and grace.
Thank goodness no one was watching. Next time he’ll just have to remember to float.
He arrives at his dad’s van with no further incident. The rear doors are— following Garnet’s prediction- cracked open. Dad’s awake, at least for now.
“Daaaaaaaad,” he hollers, cupping his hands around his mouth to project. “A really, really weird thing happened, and I kinda need your help!”
A few spare seconds pass, seconds filled with the rustles of shifting blankets, the sound of a book being shut closed, and his dad’s low murmurs. The doors swing wide, though not as wide as Dad’s eyes when they wander around their bright, sunny surroundings and eventually land square on him and his new look.
“Wh— Steven, holy smokes! Look at you!”
With an awkward chuckle, he scratches away at an itch at the nape of his neck. “Heh heh, I know, right?”
“You’re almost as tall as your old man! When did this happen? How did this happen?”
“Some point last night, I guess,” he shrugs. “I just woke up like this. But Dad—” he clings onto his arm with mounting desperation— “I need your help to find some new shirts. Don’t you have like… whole boxes of your old tour merch stashed away somewhere? I don’t wanna have to get rid of my star, I just— I just need a bigger size, or something.”
“Hmmm…” Dad muses, scratching at the scruff of his beard. “Well, maybe, but…”
“But what?”
“But if any of it’s still around, then it’s probably in Amethyst’s room. All of the stuff from the storage unit ended up with her, remember?”
“Oh…” he says, brows furrowed, not quite able to parse this fact within his memory yet. And then…
Ugh. That’s right.
Two New Years’ ago. The huge mess of crates and mattresses and long forgotten belongings. All that ridiculous Little Butler nonsense. Amethyst’s fight with Dad.
“Oh,” he mumbles, crossing his arms. “Right. Well, then let’s go find it!”
“R- right now?”
“Yeah, why not? I need new clothes, and you could see if there’s any old junk in there you might want to keep!”
With that, he grabs his dad’s hand and yanks him along, spirit filled with renewed purpose and vigor.
“And you’re sure you need my help for this?” Dad asks, lagging a step or two behind him as they march back across the beach together. “The Gems, they… well, they don’t usually want me going into the temple—”
“Oh, Amethyst will be fine,” he says with a wave of his palm. “She never cares when I go in there to check out her trash piles. ‘Sides, I need your help to find the right box! I have no idea what your old band stuff was stashed in.”
His dad flashes a tight smile, the sort he always serves up when he’s nervous, but also too timid to tell him that he’s nervous.
“Well… if you think she’ll allow it…” he relents, and picks up his pace to match his.

The break room is relatively empty when you enter it, which is no surprise, the many men and women employed by the state were very dedicated to their jobs and only seemed to take breaks when they've finished the majority of the work that was assigned to them that day.
Now standing by the water cooler and taking a swig from your cup; you look over the area to spot anyone to strike up a conversation with. You spot a certain Second Lieutenant who looked to be moping across the room. He was staring at a photo in his hand, likely on of his sister, with a miserable expression on his face.
You couldn't help but feel a bit concerned considering how cheerful the superior officer usually was. Especially if he was looking at a photo of his sister and looking like a kicked puppy. It made you wonder if the two of them got into a fight or something similar. So you decided to call out to him and hopefully cheer him up a bit.
"Hey, Second Lieutenant Briar, you look really gloomy today. Is everything alright?"
You asked him in a slightly raised voice to catch his attention, turning your body towards him.
The long haired man looked up from the photo and to you; solemn expression still glued to his face. He walked over to you with his shoulders slumped; heaving out a deep sigh once his feet stopped a short distance from your own.
"Hey [Name], good afternoon. To be honest I'm not doing so great.... It's— It's Yor; I think she hates me or something..."
Yuri muttered quietly, his sad demeanour making an uncomfortable contrast to the incredibly cheerful and enthusiastic man he was just yesterday.
No wonder he looked like he had just left a funeral. Maybe the two Briar siblings did get into an argument. It's incredibly unlikely, but considering what the garnet eyed man had just said it was certainly a possibility. The poor guy just looked so heart broken, it made your own heart clench painfully in your chest with sympathy.
"Yor couldn't hate you, Sir. She's your older sister, it's impossible for siblings to truly hate each other. Why in the world would you think that?"
You asked him in disbelief; your voice showing clearly how flabbergasted you were, yet it was still respectful as the man before was your superior.
Yuri looked down; his bangs shading his eyes but not completely obscuring them from view. To your surprise, you could see tears collecting on his lower lashes. It was hard for you to really grasp that this man was the same Second Lieutenant Briar that could pull information from a suspected spy in only five minutes. But the man was still human, he had thoughts and feelings of his own outside of work.
"Yor... she got married. She's been married– for a whole year –and she never told me anything! Does she not trust me enough to tell me something so important!?"
He cried quietly, his voice small and timid, quivering with each word that escaped his lips.
Your heart twisted painfully from behind your ribcage. The man you had known and looked up to for so many years was shedding tears in front of you. You couldn't help but want to embrace him and dry his tears; it was like an instinct from deep within your heart. Why in the world would his sister do such a thing? She held something that important from him for an entire year?
"Second Lieutenant– No –Yuri... Perhaps she was just worried that you wouldn't like her husband. You're very protective of her, you know. She may just love this husband of hers so much that she didn't want to see you disapprove of him."
You speak softly to him, raising a hand to his face and gently wiping away his tears with the pad of your thumb.
Glassy garnet hued eyes look up at you; dusted with hope. He doesn't bother to ask you to stop or remove your hands from his face; seemingly enjoying the feeling. The man even leaned into your hand as you gently pet his head in an attempt to comfort him.
"You really think so? No... You're probably right, she couldn't hate me, she wouldn't have answered the phone if she did, right?."
Yuri attempt to assure himself, his reassurances sounding more like a question as he subconsciously fiddles with a loch of his hair.
This man was honestly just too adorable. Right now, he could be compared to a young boy being reassured by an older brother or friend. He was so pure yet he could turn his personality on a dime, no question asked. Yuri Briar was an enigma; a concept that you couldn't ever hope to grasp but you would still try. Why give up on someone so inspirational such as him?
"Of course, Sir. Here, help yourself to some water. You may have only cried a little, but I won't let you become dehydrated on my watch."
You tell him softly, grabbing and filling another disposable paper cup and passing it into the blackette's awaiting hand.
Yuri cheeks pinken a bit as he takes the cup from your hand. He looks down at it with sparkling eyes; wondering just how someone other than his older sister could make him feel better so effectively. A small smile slowly worms it's way onto his face as he takes a sip from his cup. It's like his coworkers are a part of his family now... yeah... he likes the sound of that.

what's that? TGS gem au!
these are honestly a bit old by now (2 month-ish? oh geez) but they have never left my head. If you want to know more, there is a massive yap wall under this cut with some lore and design ideas
First, Jekyll and Hyde's gems!

My first instinct was giving them hearts for gems, since we only ever see one Spinel in Steven Universe.

But I ended up remembering this that I read in the wiki a long time ago, that Spinels would have differently shaped gems based on playing card suits. I was suddenly hit with the fact that we do see both Jekyll and Hyde referred to with card symbolism in Just a Song at Twilight! This was very good for me, because I don't know anything about cards at all.
Jekyll also had a lot more diamonds scattered around his design– both a nod to his gem and his 'rule-following' attitude. Hyde only has the bare minimum to signify his court.
Trying to make a Sapphire is hard, and clothes are even harder, but I ended up making the choice to give Lanyon longer hair. He secretly hates it and reforms with shorter hair the first chance that he gets, but for now he has to keep up appearances
Figuring out Everly was also pretty hard, but that's mostly because she doesn't have that many appearances in the comic. I hope I got her right, even though I'm not entirely sure about making her a quartz.
Now...
LORE DUMP TIME!!!
Red Spinel (aka Henry Jekyll) was originally meant to be Pink Diamond's playmate. However, not long after her (his) creation, it became clear she was an off-color. An imperfect gem had no business being so close to a diamond, but due to the rarity and high-cost of spinels she was spared and instead sent as a 'gift' to a successful commander, Star Garnet (aka Lanyon Sir.)
Star Garnet was well-known for shaping up off-color gems into perfect fits for their roles. While this mostly earns the reputation of a fearsome leader, Star Garnet isn't actually cruel to her gems, she simply organizes thought-out training regimens to fit every gem's disabilities. Still, this exact reputation is what led to her being gifted Red Spinel. While she did not have any use for a Spinel seeing as she is war commander, she couldn't exactly refuse a gift so important as a spinel from the diamonds.
One of Star Garnet's gems that stands out the most is certainly her sapphire. Sapphires are aristocratic gems of high-standing, and so, are not under control of gems such as garnets. This sapphire, of course, is a special case. Tall where a sapphire is small, rowdy where a sapphire is calm. Sapphire (Robert Lanyon) has struggled her whole life to have a fraction of the respect a gem of her standing is supposed to have before she simply gave up. If no one is going to take her seriously for her predictions, then she'll give them a real reason.
Disrespecting orders, messing around with 'lower' gems and being generally disrespectful are Sapphire's specialty. She began to take quite a liking to interacting with the other gems in the Station: soldier, technicians... They all looked at her with the adoration befitting for a sapphire, but an adoration she had never seen directed at her before. Interacting with 'lower' gems made her feel a type of control she simply never felt in her life, and it was easy to leave once they got to attached–, or stars forbid–, accidentally tried to fuse with her. The fusions never worked, seeing as only one side felt the connection, but it was enough to prove her influence and leave gems ashamed.
Of course, things started to change with Spinel's arrival.
Seeing as Garnet had no use for a playmate, Spinel mostly walked around their space station like a particularly unnerving jester before meeting Sapphire. The two quickly hit off as Sapphire used Spinel as an excuse to escape most of the time, and Garnet mostly approved in hopes that Spinel might to Sapphire some good. The two gems ended up bonding, finding secret rooms to scurry off to and share experiences.
Spinel wasn't what Sapphire thought a spinel would be like, and Sapphire wasn't what Spinel thought a sapphire would act like. They both talked about their experiences, with Spinel admitting she wasn't particularly good at making people smile or fond of playing, not to mention her extreme curiosity for the works of peridot's (who have grow a bit scared of the red gem that keeps staring at them intensely from the shadows).
Now, while Sapphire didn't know how a spinel was actually supposed to act like, it was clear Spinel did not emerge with any knowledge of etiquette (which Sapphire actually did, another reason for her insecurities. She did everything right, so why was she never enough?) so Sapphire took upon herself to teach what she knows to Spinel, who took to the lessons like a fish in water. That's how the "gentlegem" lessons started.
As their friendship grew, so did Spinel's charm and confidence. She was a natural at being charismatic and while she wasn't a natural playmate, she was very good at boosting gem's morale with speeches and words. This completely erased most of Spinel's past reputation as 'that-one-creepy-gem', except for the peridots who were still a bit... Wary. But that's fine.
While Sapphire was a bit bitter about this (because, really, why was Spinel better at this than her, the gem who was supposed to be born for this role?) she was still floored by a torrent of new feelings as the time passed by. It didn't take long for her to realize what these feelings were. This care, this adoration, it was what those gems she so toyed with in the past felt for her. Spinel completely took away her control and didn't even realize it, and now Sapphire had to live with the consequences. She was unquestionably in love.
Even with all of these confusing feelings and the growing pressure on Sapphire, they still met up in their secret spot every few rotations. It was in one of these meetings that Sapphire took one of those fancy gadgets of recorded music that higher gems had from Pink Diamond's balls. Spinel didn't know how to dance, but Sapphire teached her. They danced, they harmonized, they glowed. Fusion was inevitable, and it felt amazing, but upon realizing what was happening their fusion immediately broke under the torrent of their feelings. Sapphire was the first one to react, and she ran, leaving Spinel dazed and alone.
Spinel tried acting like nothing happened after, and maybe Sapphire would've done so too if it wasn't for what happened next. Star Garnet came with a brand new soldier, a rose quartz (Everly Solanki), specifically to keep Sapphire in line and finally make her do her job. When Sapphire went to talk to Spinel directly and say they couldn't keep up with their arrangement anymore, Spinel was the one to leave first this time, now leaving Sapphire dazed and alone.
While Sapphire's and Rose Quartz's relationship was rocky at first, they ended up growing as friends by the end, relating to each other's struggles and expectations. Meanwhile, Spinel fell to an uneasy depression, greatly worrying her friends. This was about the time Spinel truly let herself indulge in the alchemy and technology she always loved, hoping, praying that she could find a solution that would make her less of a broken gem, a disposable clown. Studying the properties of a gem's, well, gem– Spinel manipulated what is supposed to be a gem's very being, their coding, their brain and sense of self. The injection that she delivery directly to her gems was supposed to separate herself from all that made her defective, it created Hyde instead.
I have more plans for this au– like how Jekyll didn't actually create the society before making Hyde. Star Garnet and her fleet will eventually be put in the Earth's gem war which will result in a part of her gems to mysteriously rebel and steal a ship. These gems, (which included Spinel, Sapphire and Rose) would come to make the Society in the future! Spinel would end up naturally taking a leading role in their escape and he appointed their leader. The plan would be that they settled down in a distant part of Earth's moon and would only visit the planet many years after the war was over. These visits would end up with them learning about things like names and gender so you don't have to call characters by their gems all the time, those are their dead names now! (← silly)
Thank you for anyone who had the patience to read all of this, love you all 🫶

I always forget to post them here but I did adopted or got customs of multiple Gerudo ocs so i wanted to show the most recent ones !
As always feel free to make fanart and/or send ask about them !
And rant about lore !
Since it's a bit long it's under the cut along side the original designers and toyhouse links
Estera - Toyhouse
Original designer : @macabremadness
Middle aged jewelry maker.
She's rather kind and motherly, likes to make jewelry with star fragments !
Travels quite a lot to find said star fragments so she's not often in town, which made her jewelry rather rare and expensive.
Also since in the recent notes we learnt Urbosa's weapons were made by a jewerler, but i have a blacksmith i made before that who was supposed to have made it and i would hate to throw that lore. So Hestia and Estera collaborated to make the weapons !
Garnet - Toyhouse
Original designer : https://toyhou.se/monkeyskips
She stays in town as an assistant for Estera, working on the customer side and taking care of the shop while she's away (also they're gay)
Befriended Aloe since their shop are close together !
Everyone wonder how the fuck is she able to live normally with such a big pants in the desert
Sura - Toyhouse
Original designer : https://toyhou.se/ReiynStorm
Basically Urbosa's third (just below Jasper)
Is pissed of at Jasper for the fact she (Sura) does all the work related to the soldier while "you're just chilling with the chief"
Often tries to scold Jasper into the fact she should be helping more soldier wise which Jasper doesnt care since "You do know i'm supposed to stay with the chief right ? I was the one Lady Theresa chose to be her bodyguard !"
Also Sura is small compared to Jasper (and in general) which is really fun from Jasper's perspective
Girlfriend of Sena, nobody knows because who would expect her to be with the sweet Sena right ? Since Sena cycle is inversed (work at night, sleep the day) Sura sometimes skip a few hours of sleep to spend it with Sena !
Ukera - Toyhouse
Original designer : https://toyhou.se/Starkorg
Soldier in the guard, extremely strong and a lone wolf, even the guards in town are too scared to approach her
Shares with Jasper the "let's get suspicious of every non-gerudo !"
Talking about Jasper she's her secret idol and she wishes she could be as strong as her in the future (she will never admit it)
Her green colored skin is actually because she's a descendent of Ganondorf (I have NO IDEA if that's actually possible i just thought it could be nice for lore), which she is extremely ashamed of, she absolutely doesnt want to talk about it and if you still mention it you're dead
Althought soldiers talk behind her back about it, like saying she shouldnt be in the guard and should be exiled because of this
Relate and is close to Raven because of the fact they're kind of different. Raven is actually one of the few soldiers who dare to approach her and who actually likes her
She'll destroy any soldiers who dare to mock her
Later on they actually become girlfriends ! Ukera actually refuse to call Raven by her name due to the history behind it, so she calls her Dove instead
Ship name is BloodyDove !

Glynda: I have an enormous awkward and sticky favor to ask you both.
Weiss: Let's hear it.
Glynda: Ever since Garnet and Nebel fought in Vale the council has been putting pressure on me to spy on your family. Your husband was my friend. You are both my friends. I'm telling you this despite orders to do it secretly out of respect of those facts and the good things your husband did for us.
Ruby: Okay... what now?
Glynda: I think the council would be satisfied with a report on your children's powers and my estimations on their ratings. I do not want to delve into your personal lives.
Weiss: We'll do it.
Ruby: Weiss?!
Weiss: Ruby... Saphron and Jaune's other sisters have us trapped like racoons. Carnel doesn't even remember the way her father looked and I only get to take them into Vale once or twice a month.
Ruby: Mmm....
Glynda: I'd like to start with Nebel. He uses his father's weapons and has his semblance.
Weiss: It's not the full picture. He's also able to set up dimensional barriers which aid his allies and himself and weakens his enemies. He can also read other people's minds.
Glynda: And Garnet?
Ruby: She has something like my power? The speed, the petals, but she also knows things. She can see the past, present, and future. She can select the future she wants.
Glynda: How does that interact with Nebel's mind reading?
Ruby: Garnet doesn't like to talk about it. But Nebel is stronger. He let her win once but she knew he was doing it so he never did it again because that frustrated her worse than losing.
Glynda: The twins?
Weiss: Citrone can reduce incoming attacks and unleash them back on his opponents. Jaune's power worked similar and he told me Saphron and one of his other sisters had this kind of ability. His powers are still manifesting. I asked Garnet how his power worked once and she told me he is manipulating space-time to force retro-causal events to manifest. She told me it works from 'both sides of forever.' He also has a couple of spells. His father's scintilla, his blade beam, and even something between fire and lightning an awful lot alike to an attack I saw Saphron hit Jaune with once.
Ruby: Cherry is less of a fighter. She still uses her 'training wheels' weapon. But she can scatter and reduce attacks like her twin. Garnet told me she is manipulating probability. Its actually similar to the stories I heard about my own mom's abilities. I described it to my dad and he agreed and then when he actually saw it he confirmed that visually it's quite similar. Velocity and momentum just shift around her.
Glynda: How does that interact with your other children's powers?
Weiss: Unclear to me. Ruby?
Ruby: I asked Nebel about it once but he is very reluctant to tell us anything about his siblings' powers. I asked him to tell me if it was like Garnet's foresight and he told me 'no, they taste very different.'
Glynda: Pearle? I know she has your glyphs Weiss.
Weiss: Yes. My children as opposed to Ruby's babies received Jaune and my powers just like the Schnee Family always have. Read into that what you will.
Ruby: Her real power is in her voice. It used to be she had to sing to influence us and control other people but she can just do it now. She isn't interested in fighting and wants to make music and write poetry.
Glynda: And lastly, Carnel.
Weiss: *grimaces* It's ... It's almost too surreal to describe despite the fact I know exactly what it is.
Ruby: We don't know. We don't know anything about it. She doesn't even use a traditional weapon, she never wanted one. She has a deck of tarot cards and a coin. Nebel never trains with her. I thought for the longest time Nebel was the strongest but I think it might actually be her.
Weiss: None of the other children will tell us what it is or how it works. Jaune had some kind of trump rating? She tells me she 'empowers' other people. And she has some kind of healing ability. Jaune was able to amplify himself. To store energy until he could unleash it.
Ruby: We think Carnel's semblance might do something like that. But also when I have nightmares about Jaune or my babies she is there in my dreams to comfort me. She talks to me about them when I'm awake. Salem could do similar things to Jaune, right? But she attacked Jaune with that power.
Glynda: Oh...
Weiss: What?
Glynda: I've seen her too... when I dream about Ozpin dying or Beacon being attacked she's there...
Ruby: I'll talk to her about it. I'll make her stop.
Glynda: Please don't... She... she helps...

Hi bestie. I would love some angst with Astarion and Tav(reader) where a shape changer turns into one of them to hurt the other and the aftermath of the hurt and the victim convinced it was real until they talk it through and make up? Sorry if that didnt really make sense
notes: none! just some angst set start of act 3. rating: T
pairing: Astarion x reader
You have a horrid feeling in the pit of your stomach as Astarion appears before you. Withers senses something in the air, something loaded, and decides to turn and count his coin; he doesn’t want to interrupt what’s about to come.
Or more likely he doesn’t want to get caught in the crossfire.
The way Astarion is staring at you… gods. You feel a tight grip in your chest as a thousand emotions flit over his face. Hurt. Betrayal. Anger. Confusion. Before you can open your mouth he shoves past you, making a beeline for his tent.
“Astarion, wait - !”
He doesn’t, so you have to jog a little to keep up. Go to put a hand on his arm, think better of it. Don’t want to upset him any further with unwanted physical touch.
“Please - ”
“Oh, now you want to talk? Suddenly changed your mind after treating me like a bloody pincushion? I thought you were…” he trails off for a second, before finishing with, “I’ve got nothing to say to you,” he sneers, eyes solidly focussed in front of him, acting as if you weren’t even there.
That stings. But of course he’s angry, he doesn’t know the whole story. You battle through the hurt and manage to stand in front of him, blocking his path and finally getting him to meet your gaze.
“It wasn’t me! It was a gods-damned Doppelganger!”
He stops. Good. That got his attention.
Your mind flits back to the other night, the horrid scene as your adventuring party for the day made it back to camp, when you figured all your companions were asleep - a horrid, faux-copy of you with a deadly blade sunk deep into your vampire’s neck. Given the secluded nature of the spot, the “two of you” may have been in the middle of a private moment. He was ripped open from several stab wounds, pale body bathed in garnet blood, and after a loud fight woke the rest of the camp…
Well. After that everyone worked on bringing him back as quickly as possible, even though you were shaking from shock and sobs.
Astarion searches your face. He’s looking for a tell. He’s looking for the slightest indication that you actually were the one tearing him to pieces. You want to tell him how stupid that is. Of course you’d never hurt him, change your mind and try to dispose of him in the worst way you could (and if you did, why bring him back?) You’d hoped he’d trusted you more than that. But, being in Baldur’s Gate, with Cazador so close… well, it’s no wonder that nerves are frayed. Logic has gone out the window until he can be forced to hear it.
“It must have been Orin. You know how she’s been hounding us. She probably saw how close we were, and decided to… well, try to hit us where it would hurt. And I hate it. I hate that she used my body to trick you like that.”
Ah. That he understands. You can see Astarion turn this over in his mind, and with a small exhale he releases all the tension in his body. The obvious relief is quickly plastered over with a light laugh and the affectation of his usual laissez-faire attitude.
“Oh. Well. Don’t I look like quite the fool, hmm? You know what they say about assumptions. They make an ass of you and… well, I’d say me, but usually that’s usually a rather difficult accomplishment.”
He’s trying to hide how genuinely hurt he was. The idea that you could turn on him broke him a little, you think. That you’d use him and discard him so casually… it breaks your heart. Carefully you reach out to take his hand. You feel him flinch just a tiny bit but he accepts the gesture.
“I’m so sorry she got to you. I won’t let it happen again. I’d never, ever hurt you, Astarion. You know that I…”
The end of that sentence hangs between you, heavy, pregnant. But thankfully, rather than chasing the end of it, Astarion pulls you to him. His arms wrap around you and you feel the softness in his embrace.
“I know. I know you do.”
And you hold him. Knowing you’d move the cosmos to keep him safe.

Absolutely forgot about your new event! Congrats on the five hundred follower count vod'ika! I may send in a few, but for this oneI'm going with my birth stone, clone husband, and fave season <3
May I have Garnet with Rex in summer, where maybe he spots reader (fem or gn!) looking extremely uncomfortable from unwanted attention (nothing inherentlyuncomfortble in terms of sexually harassing or being violent, but just highly intimidating) when it's dusk? And Rex shoos the person away?
Hero
Summary: Rex’s favorite part of the day is when he’s able to pull away from his work to spend time with his girl. He’s not so impressed, though, when he goes to find her and sees her getting threatened by someone nearly a foot taller than her.
Pairing: Captain Rex x F!Reader
Word Count: 658
Prompt: Garnet - Protective Love
Warnings: None
Tagging: @trixie2023 @n0vqni @imabeautifulbutterfly
A/N: Thank you! I hope you like this story. Protective Love is hard while having a word count limit, lol, but I hope you like it anyway~
This is his favorite part of the day.
His idiots, and he calls them that with all of the love in his heart, have been released to go and get drunk or whatever it is that they do with their free time. And he’s finally able to leave the barracks to go and meet up with his girl.
It’s hot and miserable outside, which means they’ll probably head back to her place to lounge by her pool.
For a moment, just a moment, Rex allows himself to fantasize about his stunning love clad in a blue bikini, while the setting sun paints her with golden highlights and makes her look like an actual goddess deserving of worship.
And then he shoves the thought to the back of his mind, and continues to their meeting spot.
His good mood remains, right up until he gets to the meeting spot and sees his cyare looking very uncomfortable with a man towering over her. She takes half a step back, and then man advances on her, to remain right in her personal space.
Rex scowls as he inserts himself into the situation. No one is allowed to make his cyare uncomfortable. “Sorry I’m late, cyare.” Rex says as he presses himself between his cyare and the stranger.
He feels her hand curl around his bicep, her touch light, “You’re not late, I showed up early.”
Rex lightly pats the hand wrapped around his arm, and he smiles slightly when she drops her hand. And then he focuses his attention on the stranger, who looks deeply, deeply annoyed that Rex interjected.
“Can we help you?” Rex’s voice is mild, but there’s a thread of durasteel and a hint of violence there as well. His cyare likely won’t pick up on it…but the stranger definitely does based on how he grimaces.
“Nah. I was just…” The stranger pauses, “It doesn’t matter.” He turns and stalks away. Rex doesn’t turn to his cyare, though, until he’s sure that no one is going to start anything.
And then he turns to his cyare, and all of the negative emotions he’d been feeling fade away as though they were never there.
“I’m sorry,” She says, as she steps into his space, sliding into his welcoming arms, “I didn’t mean for you to have to get involved.”
“Hey,” He rests his chin on her head, “It’s my genuine pleasure to be able to protect you, cyare.”
She hums softly, “You shouldn’t have to protect me. I should be safe here.”
“Well, until you are, you have me to be your sword and shield.”
A laugh falls from his cyare, “Oh, when did you become charming, Rex?” She asks as she pulls away to look up at him, fondness in her gaze.
Rex’s face heats, “Well…you know…Jesse-”
She laughs again, “You don’t have to change yourself for me, Rex. I love you just as you are. Awkwardness and all.” She takes his hand in hers, “Now, let’s go home. It’s hot.”
“We’re going swimming?” He asks, maybe more than a little hopeful.
She grins and nods, “I bought us matching swimsuits. They were on sale.”
“What kind of swimsuits?” Rex asks as he falls into step with her.
“For you?”
“For you.”
She giggles and and moves so she’s walking backwards in front of him, one finger coming out to lightly tap his nose, “It’s a secret~”
“That means it’s a bikini, right?” Rex asks, not even bothering to hide the direction his thoughts have gone.
“It means it’s a secret.” She leans in, “But I promise you’ll like it.”
“Cyar’ika. You could walk around in a burlap sack, and I’d still like it.” He pauses, “Or ribbons-”
“Really? Ribbons?”
He smiles innocently, “If you want.”
“I think you’ve been spending too much time with Fives and Jesse.”
“Yeah, but they give the best ideas.”
She shakes her head with a laugh, “Come on, Rex. Let’s go home.”

I don't think we truly need a Final Fantasy IX remake, but if we do get one, here are some things I'd like to see from it. Spoilers for a 25 year old PlayStation game, obviously.
Some of this is my own thoughts, and some is based on grievances I've seen laid out by other people.
Keep the majority of it the same. Seriously! The game is so good. I replayed it very recently and most of it still holds up. Keep it faithful. I love VII Remake, but we don't need that here.
Hopefully this one goes without saying, but do not make the style more realistic. Keep the somewhat cartoony aesthetic.
Definitely don't expand it to the point it has to be split into two (or more) games. Not just because having to wait between them would be annoying, but actually for solid narrative reasons: I just don't think there's a good place to split it. The best I've come up with is the Disc 2/Disc 3 boundary, but the first hour or two of Disc 3 would be a really weird start for a separate game.
Don't (significantly) change the Trance system. I know, I know, we all hate Trance, how impossible it is to control, the fact it gets wasted all the time. I know. But its mechanics have plot relevance. I'd maybe add a support ability that can be equipped to prevent a character from entering Trance, so that you can functionally grind the gauge to nearly full before bosses without wasting it on a random encounter. Or maybe just Low Tide as a counterpart to High Tide, so you can slow down the gauge.
Do consider changing how Trance is used narratively. Several characters get a signature moment in the early to mid story that automatically puts them in Trance. It would make sense that they can't enter Trance prior to that point. Perhaps add a signature moment earlier where possible so their Trance isn't locked behind too much of the game (hello Steiner), although don't bend over backwards to do so. This is one of the trickier asks, obviously.
Don't drop Freya from all relevance after Cleyra. She's such a good character and she's honestly wasted for the latter two thirds of the game. Give her something to do.
Keep Quina initially optional. And use they/them pronouns for them. I actually really like the way Quina isn't a secret character, but that you have the option to recruit them early. I don't think it would add narrative value to force the player to go to Qu's Marsh and recruit them on the Burmecia arc.
Give Amarant a bit more. Just some crumbs. He doesn't need a lot; in fact I daresay it might even be better to leave him as he is rather than overdo it, but a little extra spice would be great.
Have Eiko get over her precocious crush on Zidane. I'm fine with her having it. It's part of her characterisation. But by the end of the game I really think she ought to be over it, or at least moving in that direction. A really good place to work on this would be to utilise her time with Garnet at the Water Shrine towards this purpose, rather than it just being a couple of lines to just have Garnet avoid talking about her own feelings on Zidane.
Dive into Beatrix's character more. Her face turn is fine, if a little easy, but the game conspicuously doesn't take any time to discuss the fact that she's known for (and boasts about when the party first meet her) all the people she's mercilessly cut down. She expresses disapproval of the Black Mages mostly as a method, not for what they're being used to do. Give us more shades of grey.
What is Zorn and Thorn's deal? Were they always two parts of Meltigemini, as Kuja somewhat implies? Why do they have the ability to extract Eidolons?
Have Zidane do more with his tail. There's a fun moment where he uses it in the early game to hang from a ceiling. And then it literally never comes up again other than pointing out that all the other Genomes have it (and Kuja hides his). Just sprinkle some bits here and there that acknowledge our boi having an entire extra limb.
Back to the topic of the shrines, maybe let us fight all four guardians. Why not? The water guardian didn't even get shown. It's neat when the game lets you play as a party other than Zidane's, and it could also serve as a better precursor to fighting the four Chaoses in Memoria if you've already fought all four guardians. And of course, going back to what I said about Eiko, they can expand on the scenes of the other three parties. Amarant gets a banger little moment talking to the fire guardian. More of that.
And of course, expand on the plot in general. It can be done without just infodumping. There's a bunch of information from the Ultimania about e.g. the Iifa Tree that can be elaborated upon. And when I say "without infodumping", I mean without infodumping during the plot – you can have dedicated infodumps that the player can optionally seek out. Have readable terminals in Pandaemonium that give information on Terra stuff. Have a datalog-esque feature in the game, I promise, that kind of thing is fine, put your dislike of FFXIII down, XIII's problem, aside from the complaints being largely overblown, was that (some!) important stuff was left out of the main plot and put in datalogs.
Also explain some specific little details better. For example, what is the deal with Hilda being in Mount Gulug? How long has she been in there? The place was sealed up until Kuja took the Gulug Stone from Zidane about ten minutes prior. Was she on the Hilda Garde 1 and Kuja just transferred her when he got there? So why is the room there and fully furnished?
Fix Thunder Slash. Lol.
Make stealing rare items less heinously hard. Tantarian's Demon's Mail (if it is fought on Disc 2) and Hilgigars's Fairy Flute are pure suffering because you don't have access to Master Thief yet. Also change the Beatrix fights to only end after dealing enough damage to her so you don't run out of time to steal her items.
Make Tetra Master a bit less stupid. It's never gonna be Triple Triad, or even Queen's Blood, and I don't want it to be. It can stay its own thing. It can even keep some of the RNG, just reduce the impact of it, because it's ludicrous how RNG the game is. And make the card evolution more controllable somehow.
Inject more Chocobo Hot and Cold into my veins. I want it. I need it. Okay, I'm being dramatic (but I do really love it). That said, I wouldn't mind some more use for Dead Peppers. Add a few more bubbles and mountain cracks, perhaps more around the Mist Continent so you get to see them early on and go "I wonder what that is" if you're new to the game, but for balance, also give us a bit more help finding them because they do kinda suck to find. Oh, and make the Air Garden suck less.
Do... something? with Excalibur II??? I don't know what. Making it significantly easier would defeat the whole purpose I guess. But honestly, what is the point of it, you get a really strong weapon for one specific character who you might not even be using, right at the very end of the game, and you have to speedrun the entire game meticulously to do it. Maybe make it a BIT easier, and have New Game Plus so you can actually use it for something other than Ozma, idfk. And account for the game clock speed this time.
And for one final hot take, they don't necessarily need to remove the "Ooo, soft!" moment, but it definitely needs some adjustment if they keep it. Zidane apologising properly rather than brushing it off with "It's not like I did it on purpose" would be a start.

So I was thinking about how Steven, Connie and Stevonnie all have a duet with one of the main Crystal Gems and I realised how masterfully these songs are deployed to tell us things about them.
First of all, On The Run for Steven and Amethyst.
Amethyst is the Crystal Gem who relates the most to Steven's experiences and vice versa. They're both the 'juniors' in their household, they've both been struggling with being respected by the older Crystal Gems for a while now, and though Amethyst is very much Steven's guardian when it comes down to it, she's also Steven's peer in a way that Garnet and Pearl just aren't even when they try to include Steven.
And now this song sets them up as parallels in other contexts, too. They're both from earth! They both don't wholly belong in one category (Steven as a half gem, half human, Amethyst as a Crystal Gem who never fought in the rebellion and whose existence runs against the Crystal Gems' original wishes for Earth), and as we are about to learn, they both came into existence at the cost of other life and might harbour guilt about it, even though they had literally no say in this.
And then later on they continue to be parallels, especially in season 3 (though they share the child of divorce energy during the Sardonyx Arc). They both compare themselves to impossible standards of what they 'should' be (Steven to the idea of Rose, Amethyst to Jasper) and it is their recognition of their own struggles in each other that allows them to at least partially overcome them. No wonder Smoky Quartz is Steven's first fusion with another gem!
Next up: Do It For Her, sung by Pearl and Connie.
Speaking of parallels! It's pretty obvious watching the episode that Pearl is spending some time in projection city regarding absolute devotion to a beloved, if not revered partner, but she might actually be closer to the truth in some respects than she realises.
Remember Lion 2: The Movie? When Connie said that she didn't understand why Steven would hang out with someone as normal as her? Doesn't this remind us of someone else who feels like she's objectively inferior to a special (in several ways) someone? Someone who stepped out of the predetermined role she was supposed to fill to join her loved one on their dangerous path? Who lived a double life to avoid retribution from controlling authority figures? Couldn't say.
Also, they're both the knowledgable planner to their all loving goofball partner.
With all of this, I think Do It For Her both draws parallels between Pearl and Connie as well as Pearlrose and Connverse, and shows us how the example of Pearl and Rose's unresolved dysfunction could stop Steven and Connie from falling into the same trap before it was too late. I think seeing Pearl demonstrate the end of the road they were beginning to walk was what enabled Steven to step in before they got to Pearlrose's point, where Pearl was to deep in her self sacrificing mindset for Rose to reach her.
And finally, Here Comes A Thought for Garnet and Stevonnie.
First of all, obviously, Garnet and Stevonnie as an embodiment of the love and harmony between Ruby and Sapphire and Steven and Connie respectively.
It also draws parallels between Ruby and Connie and Steven and Sapphire though. (I saw a great meta about that in my lurking days, which I will link here if someone could kindly direct me to it). Sapphire and Steven as people who would rather bury negative feelings, like Sapphire tries to in Keystone Motel and Steven in... the entirety of suf to name just the most prominent one. Which of course only leads to more problems in the long run, because they haven't processed the feelings at all.
On the other hand, the comparison with Ruby draws attention to a trait of Connie's we maybe wouldn't have noticed otherwise: She is, for the lack of a better term, much more confrontational about things that make her unhappy. Just look at The New Crystal Gems.
Also, letting Ruby and Sapphire demonstrate their conflict resolution for Steven and Connie gives us an insight into what goes into keeping Garnet together through everything. Love takes work indeed. It's also worth pointing out that Connverse have been paralleled with both Pearlrose, Rupphire and (a little bit in We Need To Talk) Gregrose this way.
This show has so many layers, I swear, I'll be on my deathbed and I'll still find new nuances to write an essay about. Well done, Crewniverse.

death note characters as gems (you know . the steven universe ones .)
im gonna be real , i havent thought about steven universe in years . i loved the show when i watched it , watched the movie and future when they came out . i enjoy the series , always have , but it was never something i cared about a whole lot compared to other things . but , last night i was laying in bed and this idea suddenly occurred to me . after way too long thinking and researching and digging up reddit threads from 10 years about gem placement meanings , here we are . this isnt always gonna be the most intelligent or make senseable . enjoy :)
also ! i know that in su all gems use she/her pronouns and are sexless . i am using the canon pronouns for these characters , because i havent thought that far ahead about this au .
L
L is a blue garnet . blue because one , hes blue coded , and two , because in su blue gems are diplomatic and intellectual . i chose garnet because in the caste system on homeworld , garnets are commanders of quartz's , and i thought that was similar to how he more controls the police force than is part of it . it is a faceted and rectangular gem . it is placed on his forehead , because forehead placement gems are driven more by logic than emotion .
light
light is a yellow agate . yellow gems are rational , blunt , temperamental , and active . agates are similar to quartzs , who are the most common gem and are simple soldiers (npa , anyone ?) , though they are higher ranking in the caste , taking on a more administrative role . i picked agate not because light is literally higher ranking than others , but because he thinks of himself as better than others . he is not a true diamond , though he pretends to be . also , he is said to have previously helped with cases in younger years but never actually having gone onto the field is similar to agates roles . i think his gem is faceted , clean cut and precise , like him . its probably oval shaped . it is placed in his right palm , similar to sapphire in su , who is associated with strength and influence , though she ultimately does what she believes to be the correct thing .
misa
misa is a pink spinel :) i chose this because in su , spinels are entertainers for the diamonds , and misa is a model/actress , an entertainer . its a faceted heart shaped gem , placed on her navel . navel placements are typically feminine and emotionally driven . misa amane , everybody . navel placements are also most often associated with steven , the mc , and rose quartz , his mother . they are both emotionally driven characters , who value others over themselves . misa would literally throw her life away for light , similarly to how rose had steven and loved greg , knowing shed die in the process . also , i think spinels being owned by other gems can be a parallel to gender in dn , and how misa and other women in this series give themselves to light or other men .
matsuda
matsuda is a purple quartz . quartz are loyal soldiers , and matsuda is as loyal as they get im also associating the task force with quartzs . purple gems are emotionally driven . it is placed on his chest for the same reason .
takada
kiyomi is a pearl , and its placed on her forehead . it is probably a white/colorless pearl . another woman who gave herself to light . i think her being a pearl , a smart and hardworking gem , but still forced to be under somebody elses heel is very true to her character .
near
near is a sapphire . it is placed on his back , because he is often unable to let go of his past , similarly to the only gem in su with a back placement , lapis lazuli . sapphires are cold and mysterious , and they have clairvoyance . they are rare gems , and are part of the aristocracy on homeworld . near is often praised for his abilities and intellect , and i think that is very similar to how sapphires are only valued for their future vision and rareness .
mello
mello is a red topaz . red because red gems are hotheads and quick to anger , but still intelligent and mature . topazs are usually yellow , but i think the red gem archetype fits his character more than preserving his blondeness . his gem is placed on his left palm , which is associated with being subversive and disobedient , like ruby in su . topazs are usually big buff guards , but i think them being high ranking , but still guards for higher ranks is kinda symbolic for mello in and of itself .
matt
matt is a nephrite , mostly because nephrites are pilots in the caste system , though they are valued and respected by their superiors (shown when yellow diamond speaks directly to one , which she would never do for a lower ranking gem) . eye placement , mostly because their gem acts as their eye , but also because eyes are kind of an important part of matt ? his goggles are an important part of his design , and ive seen a ton of matt enjoyers that put their own spin on it . it is a part of his character design , it is never forgotten , and i think his gem being his eye brings more attention to it .
okay :) i think thats all for now . thank you for reading ! please feel free to ask me to do more characters i think this definitely has the capacity to become a full fledged au . thank you again ! reblogs and replies always treasured .

ii. crash my party

part two of the 'hangman & honey' series!
summary: when his original plans to bring honey to homecoming fall flat, jake thinks he's secured a fail-safe plan for honey to still have the night she deserves. when that too comes crumbling to pieces, jake, like always, is there to patch it back up. because jake is always the one to take care of her. they knew everything about each other...right?
word count: 5.6k
warnings: angsty -> fluffy, shitty homecoming dates, unbearable tension, i'm aware jake would only have a learner's permit but we don't follow the laws in small towns
-
It had started with one simple conversation.
"Jake, humor me," she'd started, finally closing her hardback book, looking up at him from across the table they'd been sharing in the school cafeteria. "A school dance? What part of that seems like a place I'd want to spend my Saturday?"
Jake smiled. "Hm, because I'll be there."
He gave her a shit-eating grin before shoveling fries into his mouth. Honey had rolled her eyes, forcing herself not to break into a grin as well. She stole a fry from his tray and swallowed before shaking her head and giving her retort.
"You're going to be there with Katie, and I highly doubt she'd want me hangin' around all night. She's like, majorly in love with you. I'm not going to be your third wheel, people already think I'm weird because I'm always taggin' along with you. I don't need to give them more fuel for the fire."
Ignoring the jab Honey gave herself, Jake tried to think of another approach. He hadn't wanted to go to this dance with Katie at all. He internally scolded himself-Katie was a sweet girl, pretty too, but as Honey had mentioned, Katie was in love with Jake. He just simply didn't feel the same. Suddenly, as if a light bulb had flickered above his head, Jake perked up.
"What if someone asks you to homecoming? Would you double date with me?"
Honey cut her eyes to his forest-green ones, looking away briefly before chewing on her bottom lip. She looked down at her hands, twisting the garnet ring adorning her right ring finger.
"That's sweet, Jake, but you and I both know that won't happen." She pauses, placing the ring back in position. "But, metaphorically speaking, if some random guy decided it wouldn't be social suicide to go with me, then, yeah, I'd double date."
Honey could feel the blush rising to her cheeks, she was positive Jake was the only guy in the entire school that had ever talked to her, much less look at her in any romantic nature.
Her confirmation was all Jake had needed, and he was already on a mission that he was sure he'd succeed in. As the lunch bell rang and he parted ways with Honey, he put his plan into action. Sitting in his fifth period Biology class, he turned to the seat behind him, a good-natured smile on his face. Hayden Wright, Jake's football teammate and friend, stared back at him. The teenage boy raised an eyebrow and gave Jake a look.
"What do you want, Seresin? You've got that stupid look on your face."
Jake scoffed, "First off, fuck you. Second, I've come to cash in my favor, Wright."
Jake had done Hayden a solid nearly a month ago, helping him in cleaning up his family's trashed barn from one of their post-game parties (to save him an ass-whooping from his father), and Hayden had agreed to owing Jake one, he'd just never thought Jake would actually ask him for one.
"What'd ya want?" Hayden's face had been neutral, figuring Jake wanted him to put in a good word with one of the cheerleaders, or to get Hayden's older brother to buy him alcohol.
"You know my friend, Honey?"
Hayden's eyebrow raised at Jake's word.
"The one that sits with you at lunch? I mean, yeah I know of her, why?"
"You're going to take her to homecoming." Jake said the statement plainly, so there would be no question.
Hayden audibly laughed. "Good one, Jake."
"I'm not joking, Wright," Jake's voice had taken a different tone. There was no more lighthearted humor to it, only a sense of seriousness. "I was already planning to take her, but Katie asked me before I could ask Honey myself. The only way she'll go is if she thinks she's not someone's tag-along. I'm not asking you to wine and dine her, asshole, I'm asking you to pick her up, give her a corsage, just-just fuckin' talk to her. Treat her like you would anyone else. She's not going to fall in love with you because you gave her an ounce of your precious attention. You owe me, man."
"Seresin, I already planned on asking Sam Van-"
"Be real, Wright," Jake's eyes were sharp, now daggers. "No shot in hell Sam Vance is going to say yes to you. Honestly, in my opinion, Honey is too good for you, way too good for you, but I'm desperate at this point. You'll ask her-in person-today, after practice. You'll ride with me and Katie, wear a nice suit and bring a corsage. She likes magnolias." Jake's statement left no room for leeway. It was set in stone, Hayden would ask her, be there with bells on, or else. Even as an underclassmen, Jake was easily on the taller side of his teammates, with the muscle to match-his daily farmwork had aided him in that department. Combined with his family's influence, you simply didn't want to be on his bad side.
Hayden sighs, his face drawn in a tight line.
"Fine, but consider my debt paid indefinitely, won't pull this shit again. If I'm going to have to take this girl, what the fuck am I supposed to talk to her about? I don't know the first thing about 'er."
Jake chuckles.
"Lucky for you, she's not much of a talker. Won't be to you, anyways. She likes to read, a lot. Ask her about literally any book. She's funny, just talk about whatever, she'll find a way to make you laugh. Just because she's not a cheerleader doesn't mean she isn't worth your time. Just for once in your life, just one night, don't be a dickhead."
-
Honey had been foolishly naive in thinking someone like Hayden Wright would actually be interested in someone like her. She'd felt the sinking feeling enter her chest the day he'd asked her to go to homecoming with him, starting small at first, but growing large enough to fill her anxiety-ridden torso. She'd felt the feeling lingering in her gut when she'd tried on and bought the flowing white dress that adorned her frame. She'd swallowed it down, buried it deep, told her internal insecurities that maybe, for once in her life, something good would happen to her. When that looming feeling had festered forward again that afternoon, as she meticulously curled her hair in Jake's bathroom, she had plastered on a smile and kept going, telling herself it was only a feeling.
But now, as she sat horribly mistaken on the steps of the Seresin farmhouse, she no longer stomached the feeling. Hayden was supposed to be here over an hour and half ago, and he had yet to show. Honey knew he wouldn’t, she’d expected it. She swallowed thickly and looked on as the sun made Katie look radiant in a way Honey knew she would never be-girls like Honey simply didn't shine like that. She let that aching feeling fester forward as she watched Katie laugh next to Jake in front of Janet's rosebushes, tears lining her lashes. The ridiculous eye makeup she'd spent an hour on had gone to waste, along with the heels she'd splurged on. She had almost unbuckled them and tossed them to the side when Janet's voice sounded.
"Honey, sweetheart, c'mon over, I want some pictures of you and Jake."
Honey had smiled and wiped her eyes, standing as tall as she could next to Jake in front of the Seresin's towering magnolia tree. She'd painted on her best smile, avoiding Jake's gaze that was staring holes into the side of her head. He hadn't said anything, and she didn't expect him to. Just because her night turned out to be miserable didn't mean his had to. He and Katie would go to the dance, and she'd stay with Seresin's, probably watch westerns with Jacob Sr. until he fell asleep in his recliner, then she'd take herself up to Jake's room and read until he came back. Maybe she'd just go home, despite hating being there because of the loneliness, so she wasn't a bother to anyone at all. The Seresin family was too kind to her, and she'd never want to overstay her welcome.
"Well, it's a quarter til', you young folk should be headin' along," Jacob Sr.'s voice sounded. Honey smiled as Katie hung off of Jake's arm, and Honey turned back towards the porch of the house, sitting back down on the stairs and started to unbuckle her shoes. Jacob Sr.'s eyes cut to her frame, and his eyebrows furrowed.
"Honey, what are you doin', girl? Not too sure on the dress code at this function, but I imagine shoes are required."
Jake's eyes looked at the figure of his best friend sitting on his grandparents' porch, and a feeling he had never felt seeped completely down to his bones. He hadn't even bothered to take her in completely since she'd gotten dressed, too focused on getting himself ready. Honey was dazzling as the sunset framed her figure. The color of her dress brought out her skin, and her hair had been styled lightly, but just enough to frame her face. He couldn't take his eyes off of her. But when he finally braved looking into her eyes, his heart ached. Sadness pooled behind her irises, water forming in her waterline. Her smile contradicted all of the feelings he knew were stirring inside of her, and every cell in his body wanted to shed his dress clothes, pile into his truck and hunt Hayden Wright down to beat the shit out of him.
"Oh, um," Honey started, as if she couldn't find the words to say. "My date isn't comin', I-I don't think I'll go. I'm just gonna go home." She smiled a smile that would appear unbothered by anyone else, but Jake knew that smile. It was entirely fake, an action to keep herself from bursting into tears. She was often so quiet and so good at saving face that it was hard to see her suffering, but Jake saw through her completely, he knew her 'strong' look. Jake jumps into action, without even thinking of how it may make the girl on his arm feel.
"Not a chance, Honey," Jake started, walking across the yard. "Just because Hayden is a jerk, doesn't mean you don't deserve to go. You look beautiful, can't let that go to waste. C'mon, you can hang out with us."
He sticks a hand out and looks down at her. She sighs heavily, taking it, and Jake feels his skin light up. His hairs stand on end, and after all these years, he notices every color in Honey's eyes. He notes the curves of her cheeks, the beauty of her entire figure. He finds himself feeling an overwhelming urge to press his lips into hers. How had he never seen her before? She had spent half of their lives by his side. She knew everything about him, from his favorite foods to the things that kept him up at night. Jake's eyes dart between her own as his heart races in his chest. Jake Seresin was in love with his best friend- head over heels, jumping into the deep end, full force in love. He stands stock still, her hand on his own, for a moment too long.
"Well, we're going to be late if we don't come on." Honey's voice is small, not quiet like usual, but small. She tears her hand away as she makes it down the stairs, giving Katie a curt smile as Katie's arm links around Jake's. He helps Katie into his passenger side, feeling a bit odd that Honey wouldn't be just to his right. Honey climbs into the backseat, her bottom lip tucked in-between her teeth, hands mindlessly rotating the rings on her hands. As Katie chatted animatedly in the truck, Honey only smiled politely, speaking when only necessary. She was utterly miserable, and Jake could see it. It was written across her face so plainly. For most of the night, that look never left her face.
Loud music, the sounds of their classmates yelling at one another to talk, and flashing lights filled the small high school gym, a basketball court full of underclassmen couples swaying to a song Honey didn't recognize. She was wishing she'd brought her current read with her, not that she'd be able to see it in the dark room. Instead, she sat in her metal folding chair at the table Jake and his friends had claimed, watching all the other girls' shoes and purses. As she looked out at the group, she couldn't quell the hurt in her heart that she'd tried swallowing down a million times that night. Katie threw her head back laughing at something Jake had said, though Jake didn't look nearly as amused as her. Her eyes focused on Katie alone-she danced barefoot in front of Jake, her turquoise colored dress shimmering under the lights. She wore a wide smile, one that lit up her whole face. Honey burned with envy. Of course that was the type of girl Jake went to dances with. Katie practically glowed-everyone loved her. The type of girl that guys would never stand up, the girl that guys stopped and stared when she walked by. And no matter how Honey yearned and prayed at night, begging to God to be that kind of girl-the girl that lights up a room, one that makes everyone's head turn-she would never be that. She'd always be bookish, timid, she shook with nerves when she had to give presentations in class, much less in a room full of her entire student body. Without much further thought, she suddenly realized it wasn't the fact she wanted to be loved by everyone, she just wanted to be the kind of girl Jake loved. Jake would never see her as anything more than a sort of quasi-sister, someone to give him advice on how to treat another type of girl right. Even without malice, Jake would hurt her too, and she knew it would leave her empty. Honey felt a tear slip down her face, she hadn't even realized she was crying. She wiped it away hastily, refusing to be the rejected girl that cried at a school dance. She might be a loser, but she wouldn't become a cliche. She found herself picking at the skin around her nails, biting her bottom lip, trying to distract herself from the oncoming round of tears pushing through her eyes.
Back on the dance floor, Jake let out a breath as Katie ran off to dance with some of her girlfriends. The girl was sweet, but he could hardly keep his mind focused on anything but the girl sitting at the table he'd left twenty minutes ago. He'd thought about just dropping Katie off and turning around to take Honey home, but his grandparents would've never let him hear the end of that. Instead he watched from the dance floor as Honey became more and more drawn in on herself. He clocked her fidgeting first-the once pristine white polish on her nails now chipped, her bottom lip red and peeling. Her shoulders were slumped and she hadn't smiled once since they'd arrived. He knew she was trying to let Hayden's rejection roll off her shoulders, he knew she would've already expected it, but when it actually happened, it left her devastated. Not that she cared much about Hayden, but her years worth of abandonment had flared. She was reeling in her own mind, and in a room like this, there were no distractions, no book to escape to, so she simply sat and drowned.
Jake plopped down in the chair next to her, his feet aching in his new dress shoes. The air was thick, and even knowing Honey so well, he wasn't sure how to comfort her. He simply went on instinct. His voice had a rough edge as he shouted over the music.
"You wanna dance?"
They'd danced before, a thousand different times. They'd dance to old country songs as kids, in the barn on the Seresin farm. They'd danced to the radio in his grandparents' kitchen, just friendly dances. It wouldn't be any different, right?
"No."
Jake's head whipped to her. She was never short with him, always layering her rejection softly. Jake didn't think too much about it, she was already feeling vulnerable.
"You sure, Hon? You love this song."
He wasn't wrong-she did love this song. It was a country ballad at least a decade old, but she'd loved it anyway.
"I'm fine, Jake. You should dance with Katie."
"Don't want to dance with her, want to dance with you."
Honey bit her lip to keep it from wobbling, shaking her head.
"You don't have to feel sorry for me. I already knew he wouldn't show, I expected it. It's not your fault, you have nothin' to make up for, okay? I'm not going to be the girl you give a slow dance to because she’s a loser who thought someone like Hayden Wright would actually want to go with her. I don’t need that kind of pity, Jake, especially not from you.” Her tone was fiery, but she hadn’t intended to come across as angry towards Jake, he hadn’t done anything, she was just growing tired of being completely visible and simultaneously invisible to him. “I'm sorry-I just, I don't feel much for dancing at the moment."
She swallowed and took a deep breath.
"Then let's get out of here."
Her head now whipped around to Jake.
"No, no. I'll just wait until you and Katie leave, o-or I'll call your Grandma, I'm sure she wouldn't mind coming to get me so you can keep having fun.” She looks out into the crowd and spots Katie moving through the large crowd of the football boys and cheerleader girls. “You're having fun, Jake, with your friends, and just because I'm miserable doesn't mean you have to be."
"I shouldn't have dragged you here, Honey. I convinced you to come, and you're miserable. I should've realized this isn't your scene, and I'm just making it worse. You shouldn't have to sit here and be miserable and watch as everyone else has a good time. That's like some sick form of torture."
Honey wanted to scream, to grab him by the shoulders and make him realize that she lived it every single day, she was always watching from the sidelines as everyone else lived. It wasn't any different now that she was in an uncomfortable dress in a cold metal chair.
Honey musters a smile and turns to face the boy who held her heart in his hands. Jake couldn’t pull his eyes away as the white satin dress adorned her freckled skin, falling perfectly on her curves. "Jake, look, Katie is out there and she's beautiful and she adores you, and she's been nothing but kind to me, even for being her date's weird third wheel. My night is already miserable, hers doesn't have to be. She deserves to have the night she dreamed of. I sort of already imagined my night to look this way, so, not that big of a disappointment, really."
She swallowed thickly, her vision blurring with the tears she couldn't keep pushing down. Jake blinked, crouching across to rest his elbows on his knees to turn himself closer to her. He caught her eyes, but she couldn’t meet his, afraid of the sympathy she’d find in them.
"Honey, how clueless do you think I am? You say that, that you already knew you’d be disappointed, but I watched you. I sat on the tub while you got ready, and I've seen that look before, the same look you get when somethin’ unexpected happens in your book, or a stupid meet-cute moment on a movie. You’re not some mutant, you may not care about the stupid social part of a school dance, but you were excited, Hon. I’m sorry he put out your fire, believe me I want nothin’ more than to take him behind the barn.” Honey now braves a glance at him, and finds herself staring at a pair of warm green eyes. No sympathy, no pity, just Jake. “You say you're fine with disappointment, but you're not Wonder Woman, darlin'. You're human, and no one can take that amount of sadness without breaking. You suffer in silence because you think no one cares about your happiness, but, Honey, I care. You deserve your own happy night. So please for the love of God, let me get you out of here, we'll do whatever you want. I can't sit and watch you suffer."
Honey shook her head.
"As wonderful as that sounds, Jake, I won't do that to another girl. It's not fair to Katie for you to just leave her here. It's already-"
"I don't think we'll have that to worry about." Jake points to the general direction of a crowd of people, where Katie is laughing as she hangs off the arm of another member of the football team. "I don't think Katie's 'obsessed' with me, I think it's more of anyone who wears the jersey."
Honey shook her head silently, looking up at Jake. His arm was stuck out for her to take, and she gave him a small but genuine smile. Her head rested on his bicep as they walked through the parking lot. As he opened her door and let her in, she almost let herself imagine that she was the girl he’d asked, that he’d decided the dance was lame, and they’d have more fun doing something else. She shut down those thoughts, knowing they’d only disappoint her later when he showed up with another pretty girl at his side. She let the thought float away as the high school faded in the rearview mirror, Jake’s country music filling the cab of the truck.
“What’d you wanna do, Hon? It’s kind of late, everything’s probably closed, but we could swing into Greenville, catch a fast food place.”
Honey shivered, Greenville was nearly twenty minutes out, and she was already itching to get out of this dress and into bed.
“Uh, don’t think I’m cuttin’ you short, J, I just, I really want to get out of this dress, and I want to shower. I-I think I just want to go to bed. I told you not to leave, your night is gonna be-“
Jake’s clouded mind filled with a particularly lewd thought as she spoke about getting out of her dress, one he shoved down quickly.
“My night’s gonna be just fine, because you’ll be in bed and not in that gym miserable.”
Honey simply smiled and continued to watch their small town pass by out her window. It wasn’t long until Jake parked in her driveway, her heart heavy. She stared at the dark house, the empty garage, and the feeling of emptiness she knew she’d find. She smiled half-heartedly as she turned to Jake. He smiled back as he cut the truck off and crawled out of his seat, opening her door and helping her out. He walked her up the steps and to her front door, they looked at each other in the darkness of night, illuminated only by the moonlight.
“Thanks, seriously, Jake, for everything. You’re the best friend I could ask for.”
Her heart cracked at the word ‘friend’, and so did his, not that either of them knew about each other’s feelings.
“No need to thank me, Honey. You can always crash my party.” He winked, looking up at the dark porch light. “Forget to leave the porch light on again?”
Honey shrugged, fetching her house keys from behind a plotted plant. She opened the door to turn the porch light on, and when she flicked the switch, nothing came on. Her eyebrows furrowed, trying the switch for the living room light, and nothing. She shakes her head, her shoulders slumping.
“That’s just rich,” she mumbles under her breath.
“What’s up? Light bulb blow?” Jake’s mind wandered aloud.
“No, uh,” Honey flushed red, feeling embarrassed. “My mother didn’t pay the light company, again. S-She forgets about this place sometimes. I’ll just call her tomorrow, it’s fine. I’ll see you Monday, Jake.”
Jake pauses, placing his palm on the front door she was trying to hastily shut. He takes in her slumped figure, his anger flaring at her neglectful mother.
“Hey, don’t shut me out. You say she forgot again? She’s done this before? Honey I’m not letting you sit down here in the dark, pack a bag, you can stay with us.”
As much as she wanted to protest, as much as her brain said she’d be an imposition at the Seresin’s, her heart was lonely and heavy, and she didn’t want to be alone tonight. She didn’t fight it, only grabbing the flashlight by the door and stomping up the stairs as Jake stood watch. She packed a duffel hastily, throwing in pajamas and casual clothes, and even a set for Monday at school. She never wanted to overstay her welcome, but she would stay as long as the Seresin’s would let her. She hated this house, she hated the empty rooms and she hated her mother. She stomped back down the stairs and locked the door back, sliding back into Jake’s truck and peeling down Seresin Farm Road.
Late that night, with wet hair and Jake’s Dallas Cowboys hoodie over her frame, she sat across from him atop his plaid comforter, snorting and heaving with laughter over Jake’s spot-on impressions of his football coach and teammates. He’s traded his formal wear for basketball shorts and an old rodeo t-shirt, appearing much more like the Jake she felt most comfortable with. For the first time that entire night, she’d felt light, filled with happiness. Hayden Wright never crossed her mind, nor the beautiful girls she held her standards to, not even her elusive mother who Honey felt hated her most. None of it mattered, because she was safe, comfortable, feeling perfectly content enough to curl under Jake’s sheets and fall asleep on his spare pillows. She slept soundly, not feeling Jake’s hands push hair out of her face, or his green eyes unable to look away from her sleeping frame until he too collapsed in sleep. Most importantly, she hadn’t heard Jake’s mumbles of how beautiful she’d looked tonight, things he’d only say when he knew she wasn’t listening. At least for now.
When Janet woke early the next morning, she relaxed seeing Jake’s truck parked in the drive. She stumbled up the stairs to find his bedroom door ajar, a pair of black high-top converse keeping it open. They were Honey’s-she wore them everywhere. Janet’s blue eyes peered into the room illuminated by morning sunshine.
Jake and Honey both slept soundly in Jake’s queen bed, facing one another, none of their limbs touching. To any other parent, this would lead to a sharp lashing and a loud wake-up, but Janet knew her grandson well. He held Honey in such high esteem he’d never try anything of a clandestine romance. Janet loved Honey, and, while never audibly saying it, she silently hoped her boy would open his eyes soon and see the diamond of a girl in front of him. She simply kicked Honey’s shoes out of the way, closing the door to leave them undisturbed.
When the pair woke, nothing had changed. Jake and Honey still sat at the breakfast table like any other weekend, Jake stealing bacon off of Honey’s plate, and Honey stealing strawberries off of his. There was no great fanfare of Honey all but moving into Jake’s room. Janet and Jacob Sr. had no objections when they found out the reasons why. They treated Honey as if she was another Seresin. The only thing that had changed is that Janet no longer had to pick her up for school. So when Honey and Jake walked into school together on Monday, no one seemed to bat an eye. When Hayden Wright walked into the courtyard Monday morning, however, it seemed every single eye was on him, or, more likely, the double black eyes he sported.
Jake had passed off his busted knuckles on some farm work, and Honey had believed him. When she noted that his closest football buddies, Brett and Willie, also had the same markings, she’d passed it off as a football tussle Jake hadn’t wanted to tell her about. Jake had smiled and kept the conversation topic away from Hayden at all costs, which struck Honey as weird, but she chalked it up to Jake’s protective nature. She only started to wonder when Willie turned to her in their shared third period and asked her about the book she’d been reading, or when Brett had caught her attention in the hallway.
“Honey!” The tall boy’s voice had boomed over the crowd of people in the hallway. “What’s up?!” He’d high-fived her as she simply responded with a quiet “nothing much” and headed towards her locker.
When the two boys joined her and Jake at lunch, she’d been nervous at first, as she always was around new people, but quickly fell into a more comfortable state as the weeks passed. Jake’s friends, his true friends it seemed, found her funny, doubling over in laughter at her witty retorts to Jake’s comments, and her jabs at particularly disliked teachers. She no longer cowered behind Jake as he spoke to his teammates, because Brett or Willie were always around, actively roping her into easy conversation. For the first time in her life, Honey had friends, well, besides Jake, but she'd always had Jake.
That Friday night, after the game, as Jake slung off his shoulder pads and tossed them into his designated cubby, Brett’s voice sounded over the bustle of the loud locker room.
“Yo, Jake, are you and Honey going to The Basket after this? I’m fucking starving, man, and she always lets me have her fries she doesn’t eat.”
Jake felt a weird sort of flutter erupt in his chest, knowing that he wasn’t the only person to see Honey’s personality, that she had made an impression on his closest friends too. It almost made him burn with jealousy, but then he’d realized that he quite literally slept next to Honey each night-platonically, of course.
“Uh, yeah, as long as she’s down,” came Jake’s reply as he slung his bag over his shoulder.
“Fuck yeah!” Willie’s voice came into the circle of conversation. “Tell your girl to come to the after party at Junior’s too! I just finished that book she let me borrow, and that party’s gonna be ass, so we’ll have plenty of time to talk about it.”
Jake’s blood ran cold, his girl? When had his friends decided that Honey was his girl? He didn’t correct the boy’s words, only nodding as he chuckled, thinking of Honey’s frame sitting on the bales of hay at Junior’s barn as Willie’s towering linebacker frame chatted animatedly about the copy of The Outsiders she’d lent him.
“Yeah, I’ll see if she wants to come. You might have to catch her later, though, she’s not really big on parties. She’s not one to be social or drink, so people give her shit about it.”
Brett’s scoff filled the air.
“She’s wearing your numbers, Seresin.” Brett referred to Jake’s old jersey Honey often wore to the game. “And me and Willie’ll be there, nobody’s gonna mess with ‘er.”
That night, Honey and Jake sat on one side of a sticky red booth at the local diner with Willie and Brett across from them, opting to spend their night over dinner instead of at a party the law would likely bust. Jake had hardly spoken to Honey at all since they’d arrived, she was deep in a conversation with Willie over greasers and poems about gold. It made Jake happy that she and his friends got along, but as Honey flashed Willie a smile she’d only given him, he felt his fists tighten at his side, the burning jealousy returning. As Brett chattered on and on, Jake tried to focus, but his eyes kept lingering on the other side of him, seeing Honey laugh or her eyes sparkle as she divulged in literary talk. His mood had turned sour, and she hadn’t even noticed. So when Willie and Brett parted for the night, and they’d made their way to Jake’s truck, she’d clocked his frown as he opened her door for her.
“You alright, J?” Her voice was sweet, laced with sympathy.
“M’fine, Hon,” came his reply as he shut the door, walking around to his side and sliding in before starting the truck. Silence filled the truck, and Honey found her happiness deflating. She must’ve done something to upset him, that must be why he was acting this way. She pulled her knees to her chest, feeling small. Jake caught the movement out of the corner of his eye.
“Nothing’s your fault. I swear.” His green eyes were more warm than before.
“Then why are you acting like this? I-I’m sorry if you thought I was ignoring you, I just got caught up in talking to Willie about the book that I didn’t think about it.”
“It’s not that, you haven’t done anything, I promise. Just, thinking about a lot up here.” His pointer finger tapped against his temple.
“You can always talk to me. You can tell me anything, Jake.”
He smiled at her and nodded, but he knew he couldn’t. He could tell her anything except that he was in love with her.

This literally doesn't matter but he keeps making and deleting posts about Steven Universe for some reason. And I kinda wanna comment on the last reblog. The rest I agree with though.

Not to defend all of the black-coded characters but Sugilite is a fusion, which are shown to be unstable when those who fuse aren't in line with eachother (Garnet and Amethyst, three gems total. They clash.) And the fusion was created specifically to fight/destroy others, as most fusions are. I never thought of Jasper as black-coded myself? Compared to the other black-coded gems, she comes off as a rude-ass white woman. Like sorry, that is a white womans voice she has. Bismuth I agree with though, but she literally was there for the war... traumatized by it. And her purpose is to make weapons. Remember, all gems were intended to have a "purpose".
You can fight me on Jaspers coding, as Steven Universe stylizes black characters with prominent lips. However, Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond and the other diamonds have prominent lips, and you can clearly tell they're white-coded.
Salem, your cerberus ocs literally have the darkest one as the mean, aggressive chain-smoker, with a piercing out of the other two. Your main fursona Salem is shown to be a rude, uncaring asshole who apparently bikes through 9/11 memorials. Actually, almost all of your characters are rude and mean in someway. Please be serious when it comes to criticizing characters when you can't even write your own.
"Just watched Salem delete another SUCritical post in real time (he was bitching about how all the black characters - and only the black characters - are "bad" and "aggressive"; buddy have you watched the show? The only non-aggressive characters are the Crystal Gems, who try to solve problems through peace and friendship, that's kind of the whole point)
It had like 400 notes at time of deletion so I have to guess he was being roasted in the replies. I couldn't grab a screenshot before it was yeeted, but I have to guess it's floating around out there somewhere"
again. does he even watch the shows, he complains about. or does he look at other people complaining, and simply take their opinion, rather than forming his own.

coworker apparently thinks Garnet is Harley Quinn
A very old funny interaction with clueless coworker (whose name is blacked out in the blue rectangles), in screencaps from my social media when it happened.
And just for context, this dude just could not talk his way out of a wet paper bag. I'm sure it's partially just awkwardness (which I have never minded at all), but a lot of it was this really gross disrespectful PROMPTING that he would do in all of his interactions with me. He'd say something with no context, something we'd never spoken about, and expect me to "catch on." (Examples: "So! Any news?" "About what?" "Well weren't we waiting for an ANSWER on that?" "On what?" [scoffing, snuffling, shaking his head exaggeratedly, sighing and walking away]. Or he'd drop a paper on my desk. I'd ask him what it was. He'd wordlessly POINT at it. I'd ask him again what it is. He'd pick it up, sighing aggressively, rattle it around, and say "YOU left this in the COPIER!!" I had not left it in the copier and it was not mine. He would then holler about how is HE supposed to know that and stomp away, and then someone else would come looking for their papers in the copier and they'd be confused why I had them.) He did NOT do this with my boss or most of the other people we worked with. Just me. I guess because I'm the office blonde and usually the only woman in the room.
Anyway, he was in the top 10 of annoying people I've worked with and here is an irritating story.

And then another one a long-ass time later:

Transcript:
Pic 1:
There's no way he's a real person. C'mon, life, quit foolin' around here.
[Redacted] came up to my desk and said he wanted to ask me a question, and then hesitantly hemmed and hawed his way through false starts that sounded like "I was wondering . . . um last night . . . I was thinking . . . there was this thing. . . . So, do you know Amy . . . Quinn?"
I do not know Amy Quinn.
He seemed surprised.
Then he begins explaining that she's in some movie and he thought I liked her.
Sorry, no.
Pic 2:
But then he elaborates. "Amy" is one of the characters in a movie he's just seen and he thought I was a fan of the character and wanted me to know that he liked the movie. And further elaboration made it clear that he . . . was actually talking about Harley Quinn.
(I haven't seen any movies with her in them, but yeah, I know who she is.)
I asked why he thought I had a connection with her and he was like "isn't that her on your cup?"
****Fuuuuuuuuuuck I am so offended****
[Image of Harley Quinn next to coffee mug featuring Garnet of Steven Universe. They do not at all resemble one another, but both wear bodysuits featuring a red leg and a black leg.]
Pic 3:
You gotta be kidding me!!
[redacted] just came over and told me he saw something that he'd been meaning to tell me regarding my cartoon stuff. He fumbled verbally repeating himself and then concluded he didn't remember what it was and would come back.
Then he came back with "I remembered!!" and explained to me that he gets comic book-related events bulletins in his email and a comic store I live nowhere near is having a signing with a comic book writer I've never heard of. He was baffled that I didn't recognize the name because he thought I was "into comics." When I told him I have very niche interests in comics, he elaborated that it was something he thought I was specifically into. Several trips round and round the blunder wheel yielded the information that it was a writer for Harley Quinn comics.
This shit again.
He thinks I like Harley Quinn even though I have never read or watched a single thing about this character. He believes Garnet is Harley Quinn and I can't get him to stop misunderstanding.
