I was introduced to poisonivory through the daredevil fandom earlier this year and may I tell you when I found out that this author writes for jayroy I lost my goddamn mind. this is my personal favorite, but I almost recommended at least two more aus. finally, Reciprocation (or: Sex as Violence) shouldn't even really count as a jayroy fic but I feel weird putting it in the other category since it is sort of a jayroy fic. it's ace-aro!jason, which is one of my personal favorite interpretations of Jason (with so much textual evidence wtf), but there's still like... a lot of sex in this. First of all!!! Congrats on your comic it's so super good!!! I've been rotating it in my mind since reading it like a dungeon boss key!!! So, semi-related: I remembered tags on something you posted a while back discussing Sheik's gender, and I have to say I would be *so* interested in your 40 pages single-spaced thesis about Ganondorf gender (having a billion thoughts about this myself, I'm so incredibly curious about your own take). Only if you feel like it of course!

thank you sm i’m glad to hear it!!! also i remember the tags you’re talking about— so it did NOT end up being a 40 pg thesis, but i DID actually try to draft something like that a while back since a couple people asked me to follow up on it, and then i did not follow up on it, but now that you brought it up again it gave me a chance to look back over my attempted Ganondorf Gender Essay and clean it up a bit, so! here’s my 2 cents! (thank u anon for reminding me!!)

so i’ll start with some of my personal interpretations about gender in gerudo society; this includes the idea that 1) the gerudo don’t have an inherently binary perception of gender, or really an inherent concept of gender at all, and 2) if not for the emphasis that hyrule places on the authority of Kings, then ganondorf might not be described as the One Male among his own kind at all. i’ll try to explain what i mean by this.

by default, i think in ganondorf’s society there is (or at least would be, if not for their complicated relationship with the neighboring kingdom) less of a perception of him being a Man distinct from the Women of his race, and more a view of him just…having been born a very rare type of child, who could be conveniently recognized as a kingly authority by hyrule’s definition. and this is in the context of OoT, in which hyrule has recently absorbed the last independent territory (Gerudo Valley) after the end of a centuries-long war (which is described as having ‘united’ the races of hyrule. which sounds like textbook imperialism and manifest destiny ideology, but anyway). so having been fighting directly with the kingdom of hyrule for several decades, if not centuries, to maintain their independence and some semblance of land & resources, it may have ended up being useful to take into account hyrule’s definition of men & kingly leadership. the gerudo have this special child born every century, in context it might’ve been convenient to start saying ‘if this child can fit hyrule’s definition of a king, so we could at least have one of our own to rival theirs, then so be it. this child is a blessing amidst this conflict and he fits their definition of a king, so that’s how he’ll be raised.’

that being said, i don’t see ganondorf as being inherently male, or all other gerudo as inherently female? this is really just headcanon, but i like to think there are no gendered pronouns in the gerudo language during OoT, and the induction of words like ‘voe’ and ‘vai’ may have initially referred to hylian concepts of sexual dimorphism that became gradually more incorporated into gerudo culture over time. at the same time, i also think, after generations of these two nations being at war, while simultaneously having one be reliant on the other for procreation, the binarism of hylian society would imprint itself on the gerudo in some ways (though not at all in a foundational way). as in, there is a greater understanding about hylian ideas of sex & gender, and associations are made, and it does affect gerudo culture, but the gerudo are still inherently different in terms of how they perceive people, and it isn’t necessarily as Male / Female. and gerudo people don’t perceive themselves as being All Female with One Male— though they’re aware that this is the Hylian perception, and it does benefit them at times to work and communicate within those restraints.

i think ganondorf, as a result, does not really perceive himself as being inherently male, and he doesn’t perceive his fellow gerudo as being conversely female. internally he still thinks about gender as being…mostly a convoluted hylian invention that he’s had to vigorously study and mold himself to. i think growing up he probably had to learn a LOT about hylian society and what defines a man/king other than biology; he understands on an anthropological level what makes a hylian a woman or a man, and that it’s social & behavioral as well as biological, so (at least around hylians) he tends to be a little bit. idk. hypermasculine? while working to suppress behaviors that might break that perception. i think he also deeply despises having to monitor his own behaviors in this way.

for pronoun stuff, i don’t think he particularly minds being referred to as a ‘he,’ like he’s probably used to being called a he in hylian even among his own people when that’s the tongue being spoken. and i think the gerudo might also mess around with hylian pronouns since they can be a bit arbitrary, like it would make sense if plenty of gerudo other than ganondorf used he/him for themselves or switched between different pronouns. i don’t think ganondorf would necessarily care if someone she/her’d him either, though among hylians, he would definitely be able to tell if it was meant to be mocking. and that could be insulting on different levels— namely if they’re attempting to degrade the other 99% of his population, and projecting hylian gender stereotypes/stigmas onto people it really isn’t even applicable to, and also attempting to criticize ganondorf himself for being too effeminate, too similar to the ‘women’ of his race. which may be a common attitude among hylians who think someone of ganondorf’s sex, rank, and physical stature should be far removed from feminine behaviors.

but obviously, this has no bearing on him aside from constraining his behaviors & appearance in the public eye, before he comes to power. i do not think he cares on a personal level what anyone thinks of him, and would only measure said behaviors & appearances insofar as it helps him achieve his goals. this is also just a headcanon, but i like the idea that ganondorf grows his hair out after the 7-year timeskip in OoT because he’d originally had to cut it short sometime after surrendering to hyrule, knowing he’d have to start appealing to hylian sensibilities if he was going to get very far as a vassal to the king. he may have had very long hair prior, and only grew it out again after the coup.

so. i think he has a complex relationship with gender that is based in gerudo social conventions, and then complicated heavily by hylian social conventions. to me, ganondorf doesn’t view himself as being a man per se, but he does view himself as being a sort of redefinition (or even a bastardization) of the hylian idea of a man/king? he’ll call himself a King while behaving precisely as he wishes, especially if it will ruffle any feathers who’d deem him otherwise effeminate or unbefitting of the title. because ultimately, none of that terminology means a goddamn thing to him and he’s probably sick of having to constrain himself to these imaginary rules that were entirely imposed upon him.

i think ganondorf encompasses a lot of traits that could be defined as very masculine & very feminine at the same time. i feel like if my ganondorf had to actually choose a gender he identified more with, like from the Hylian Gender Mythos, he might lean more towards the idea of women? and part of that may also be because his lived experience has been defined by Having To Be A Man? and plenty of other gerudo might identify more with stereotypically male traits, it just depends. but he also likes being called a King and encompassing that role regardless of gender, and uses he/him pronouns anyway. i call him a girl a lot and i’m not joking when i say that, i mean sometimes he really is like a butch goth girl to me??? i’m also a bit sentimental about the idea of the gerudo being ‘all women’ in a case where ganondorf isn’t considered to be an exception to that, even if his biology is unique. but i also think he would generally see hylian binarism as very silly and that he’d love to make a mockery of it. i’m running out of thoughts so i’ll just end this here lol

i think because dnp have never been big dramatic announcement guys, instead opting for slowly boiling us, i kinda just assumed we'd be on a simmer forever/for a lot longer than i anticipated and didn't forsee the giant changes of 2019 of dan dropping off the face of earth for a bit + coming out

but i'm glad i was wrong about things staying mostly the same because of course these big shifts were a long time coming and did them much good. i'm also of course eternally glad i was right about them not quitting youtube/making things because there certainly was a lot of speculation about that at the end of 2018, and honestly so many of us were stressed tf out

i think it's also sweet to see how cautiously optimistic about what potential changes would mean for them as a duo/unit because if 2018 me could see how things are, i think she'd be pleasantly shocked at how much of a unit they are now. like of course they were very much a duo pre-hiatus, like they were The dynamic duo and did almost all professional things outside of their solo channels together. but it's even More now, both casually with their we/us pronouns and the phouse and just generally sharing a life together, and also so deliberately and thoughtfully like dan inviting phil to be so involved in wad even though it's technically a solo project and phil being so so supportive. like they're very much together both professionally and personally, and i think taking that time off and especially dan taking time to do a big solo project really helped them figure out and understand who they are together and apart, and approach the public aspect of their togetherness with a refreshed mindset and deliberateness

Anyway, back to business. Another anon commissioned me to analyse the tether scene where the Darkling impersonates Mal and kisses Alina, so here I'm gonna analyse their winter fete make out. (Everybody in this fandom have such good taste and it's 🤌👌)

(random but, in the beginning, I thought you wanted me to analyze the scene where Alina and the Darkling talk after the former had her first audience with the Queen. And at the last minute I realized you mean their make out in that room. I'm stupid💀. If you mean the other, former scene tell me 😊)

I already feel this is gonna take two parts as well🥲 (I hope the people that follow this page don't mind me overanalyzing things)

I'm gonna start from here because this is the moment where the Darkling gives up his hundred of years well-thought-out plan and gives in to desire. After what happened to the lake and realized that his feelings for Alina have taken an unexpected romantic turn, he left. Vanished. Firstly, because he's the Darkling and he has duties to fulfill and secondly because he tried to ignore them, push them out by staying away from her. But, apparently, it was impossible for him and in that moment we see him giving in to his feelings.

From the way he abruptly takes her hand, pushes her fast through the crowd and makes them invisible so no one can see them or interrupt them we can see how much he wanted to do this and for how long. He's like: "Fuck it. I'm going to do it now 'cause I've held myself back a looong time".

I want to comment two things here.

1) I think he brought her to the Queen's sitting room because it was the first room available. The closest one and since he was in a hurry to get it on, it was the first room he thought of. And because he knew that no one else would be there or get there since everybody were too busy crying, laughing and partying *insert screaming remembering how they interrupted them afterwards*

2) He really didn't miss not even one second 😭The moment the door closed he let out his bottled desire. Seriously, for how many months he was holding himself back??😭

Well, my dear Alina, it was nothing like any kiss before because the man you have before you has had centuries of practice. Really his life has been full of this as the author has said.😌

And it's very interesting to notice that even before Alina wore Morozova's collar, she and the Darkling had already a deep connection. "Like calls to like" had already applied to them long before the stag was killed.

See what I mean?

Alina could feel his emotions even though no one else could. So there was already a type of bond, a connection that united them. Their powers and emotions were already entwined before even Alina got the amplifiers.😏

In case you want to know my opinion in this, I believe he's honest here. Morozova's herd was found after so many years of search and the Darkling is in a dark room making out with Alina. His priority, people😏😏

On one hand, he enjoys what he's doing right now because he can finally express his desire after so many months of avoiding her. But, on the other hand, he doesn't like it AT ALL. He even hates saying that line. Because he admits something that he wishes wasn't true. He should desire to go to the war room but instead he's here pinning Alina to the wall.

(Also the GROWLING! He wants to eat her, guys😭. But also he's angry with himself)

It's kind of interesting how honest he tries to be. In the beginning of their meeting he wasn't that much but here, I think, he wants to be truthful to her. He tries to open up a little. But still not completely. This is a moment of weakness for him. And he's torn between making her his and going after the stag. Between opening himself up to her and closing off. (He's struggling for real🥲)

Alina can you please shut up with the questions and let him do his job we're dying here😭😭

No hate to Alina, really. But for God's sake just continue smooching without talking.😩

The Darkling taking his time exploring that black kefta. A gift from him to her, a sign that he already feels possessive of her. And here in one of the greatest celebrations of the year, he wanted to show everyone who she belongs to.

But there's something he mentions here that is very interesting.

"I should be planning our trip north".

That says a lot. He planned to take Alina with him to the north and then he would give her Morozova's collar as a gift. With joy and willingness from Alina's part. That was his plan.

But then everything fucked up.

Alina easily believed Baghra's words and run away, so that proved to the Darkling that she's not to be trusted. Add to this that Alina reunited with Mal and started a romance with him and we have the Darkling going feral and forcing Alina to wear the collar and control her powers without her permission.

Back in the tent scene we can see how this analysis is confirmed since the Darkling:

A) doesn't celebrate the fact that he found Morozova's stag after centuries of searching and took its antlers. Instead he sat sulking in a chair and drinking kvas silently.

B) he said to Alina "that was never my intention" when she accused him of making her his slave.

Conclusion: he wanted the both of them to go north together, kill the stag, Alina wearing the antlers happily and then, I think, he would reveal piece by piece his true plans to her.

You know what? I'm about to say it.

After this he lets out all his emotions through the next kiss and makes it more intense. He just let go (rip my feels).

Your possessiveness over Maglor made me smile since he is one of my favorite characters as well, but personally, I don't feel Maedhros being a part of kidnap fam takes anything away from Maglor or makes him less special. Quite the opposite, it makes Maglor even more interesting to me for him to build this strange, dysfunctional (though loving) little family with his brother and two kidnadopted children at the end of all things.

Also, I'm someone who likes to combine as many versions of canon as possible into one unified whole, so if JRRT himself couldn't decide if it's Maedhros or Maglor who takes in the twins, then both of them did it. And on a practical level, I just can't see there being any way of Maedhros not being around the twins, without actively avoiding both them and Maglor. And I can see Maedhros avoiding Maglor even less, but that might be just my Maemags brain speaking lol.

I am glad it made you smile, Anon. I've noticed that we Maglor enthusiasts can be very particular about our preferences... but at the end of the day we are united by love of Mags. I once commented to a friend that I love to watch how everyone else dresses up their beloved Maglor Doll. It's often not what I would do, but I can still admire their creative work on a character who gets 26 name drops in the whole Silmarillion (the fewest of any son of Feanor besides the twins). And there are always, I think, some core aspects of him on which we agree.

But just to clarify, I agree it's inevitable that Maedhros will interact with the twins sometimes. He may even have moments of bonding with them. (And moments of terrifying them; this is important to me.) I also ship Maemags, but when I combined Maedhros/Maglor and Elrond/Maedhros in Scorched (M) I made Mae and Mag 'divorced'. I recommend @jouissants' fill for the same prompt, In Twain (E), for anyone who is curious about Maemags and Elrond/Maedhros coexisting. It's a great fic. do you have any resources that one could read on re : bitesports and what ties and origins each sport might have? both for the more iffy things and just overall history. it seems most people into those sports never talk about those aspects of the sports + don't like people questioning things. maybe that's just me, but it's the impression i've gotten and that + the pretty apparent amount of bigots and bootlickers present in those scenes is a big part of why im wary of the whole thing (personally speaking).

Honestly? No, I don't, because I don't think a comprehensive historical analysis of any bite sport exists in any form of published format. You have to understand a lot of this is solely reliant on in-person learning and word-of-mouth and oral history, so what written sources we do have you will need to do a lot of reading inbetween the lines and knowing your human history.

For instance, you'll see a lot of history passages like this: the first Schutzhund trial was held in 1901 as a means of testing the German Shepherd's worthiness as a police and military dog. German Shepherd fanciers worked closely with the police and military within Germany at the time to continue to closely cultivate the breed's temperament, eventually proving them to be successful war dogs. In WWII, American soldiers brought several captured dogs back to the country, adding them to the United States military.

Okay. So. Read between the lines here and piece together what you know about what was happening in Germany in WWI and WWII. You're almost assuredly not going to find any bitework-specific material that blatantly says "German Shepherds were Nazi dogs" except maybe in Nazi-branded propaganda published in German within Germany during the war, which the Germany of today has done its best to bury within the confines of time. But... "worked closely with police and military" "proven successful war dogs" "American soldiers captured off the battlefield during WWII" uhhhhhh that means...

Similarly you're not going to find any specific source that says "South American dobermans were specifically Nazi dogs" but if you know your human history then you'd also know that Nazis fleeing punishment for their war crimes went into hiding in South America and many took their dogs and other sources of German pride with them, and if you know your doberman lines you also would know that South America is one of the only continents that still uses dobermans in their police and military widespread to this day because the dogs are known to be incredibly sharp, defensive, and unpredictable, much like the original temperament of the breed.

It is what is not being said that you need to pay attention to, because no one is going to specifically call it out. Whether out of shame, or fear, or even as a means of hiding their own bigotry.

It still amazed me bcs I remembered the time when it was quiet, people were tired and leaving and now kaylor is in the media (again). I'm glad my introduction to Taylor's music is through kaylor. hey anon!! wow! so you and i have been on this journey together the whole time then huh! 😌 rep siblings unite 😌 taylor’s music really does hit different though a kaylor lens. such a singular, complex story of a muse and her circumstance. a demonstrably calamitous love and insurmountable grief, a story that matches up so well to the stakes taylor works so hard to sing about in her art.

i remember it too, all the patterns over and over and over again. at one point i used to be able to set a calendar reminder and predict the next cycle of counter kaylor rumors 🤭 felt like every 9 months or so we would start the cycle again. the rumor du jour.. du.. anuelle… like seasons of a show with a different main antagonist each time. and what a group it is. you know my go-to metaphors, it’s like buffy… it’s like batman… and we are all villains running around glendale… or gotham, etc. i’ve memorized the cast of characters, their strategies and gambits, their leading questions, the insecurities masked as confidence… and i’ve memorized their patterns not out of curiosity, but because they can’t ever help themselves: they throw themselves upon you, again, and again, and again… and again. heck, it’s even gotten to the point where i can look at any given comment from any newbie and see the lineage light up like a beacon, identify the number of people through which a talking point was probably disseminated and readjusted by a shell account and disseminated again before it became delivered to me with the promise of earnestness, despite looking, and quacking, like a duck.

oh dear, i went on a tangent 😭 anyway, yes, so in the 5 years we’ve been here, we have definitely experienced the quiet. whenever things transition into a new season of life, moods shift and then things inevitably get scorched or poisoned, people puff up their feathers and create a sense of dominance or victory, people stray or leave or even turn around on you. but i’ve never wavered.. so many of us have never wavered. because we’ve never had to. and we don’t have to make things up; all we have to do is wait. sure, it gets quiet, but then, always, the kaylor tide comes back in like a flood and with it, always, a mix of old and new faces, excited by the treasure that the waves brought to shore this time, because kaylor is and always will be around.

I'm a total idiot though because for some reason I had it in my head that Tae had done his 100 days so he was on leave. So when JK appeared on Weverse the next day I was like wait of course he's on leave too!

I'm not expecting to see anything of the two of them spending time together. Not that I don't think it will be happening but I don't think we'll see it. Finding out about the various ways color coding is used in BL pairings sort of opened a whole new door for me. I'm way more familiar with BL manga, so finding drama in general has been an entirely new experience, let alone learning how everything varies country to country.

I already added like 3 new shows just from browsing the color tag. Can't wait for your new analyses, even if I'm unfamiliar with the show, they're super interesting to read so thank youuuu <3

Anon, I'm glad that you are seeing the shows you watch a bit differently, but know color coding is not limited to BL pairings. I focus on queer media, but we see color coding across all types of media from all countries.
