Tumblr media
Amanda Hardy is the new girl in school. Like anyone else, all she wants is to make friends and fit in. But Amanda is keeping a secret, and she's determined not to get too close to anyone. But when she meets sweet, easygoing Grant, Amanda can't help but start to let him into her life. As they spend more time together, she realizes just how much she is losing by guarding her heart. She finds herself yearning to share with Grant everything about herself, including her past. But Amanda's terrified that once she tells him the truth, he won't be able to see past it. Because the secret that Amanda's been keeping? It's that at her old school, she used to be Andrew. Will the truth cost Amanda her new life, and her new love?
Mod opinion: I've read this book years ago, but I remember liking it.

Trans girls, guys, whatever. You need to read "If I Was Your Girl" by Meredith Russo.
The book follows a male-to-female transgender person as they navigate moving in with their father in a small, conservative town, in the middle of their transition when her father doesn't really understand and she's trying to fit it. It's beautiful, Meredith herself is transgender and it's genuinely a beautiful book.
There may be some triggers so feel free to ask me about them.
But you need to read it!

As I said the words, I couldn't help thinking about what I'd told Grant last night. But here in Lambertville, I realized, I didn't feel that same choking desperate need to run away. For the first time ever I was living my life, the life I was supposed to live-I was finally the truest version of myself. (Pg. 151)
If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo is a beautiful book. It's so intriguing uncovering Amanda's story and her part as the book goes on.
You feel yourself rooting for her the further you get through the book. I found myself absolutely adoring her friends, Anna, Chloe, Layla... All are amazing characters who have their flaws but are so endearing.
Much less to mention, Amanda's connection with Grant has you holding your breath but also has you wanting to yell at your book.
It really addresses the struggles of being trans and meeting new people. In general it addresses the struggles of being queer in the south.
It has complex characters, all facing their own issues. I found myself loving and hating characters at the same time.
I loved it a ton. I would rate it an 8/10. It's a bit hard to start but once you get into the story you're not gonna want to put the book down. I sure didn't.

Quote
For all my foremothers and forefathers and those in-between, for rioting and fighting and surviving plagues and mourning friends, for coming through pain I can't even imagine to give me the opportunities and freedoms I have now. For my brothers and sisters and those in-between, for surviving out there every day and being beautiful inside and out in a world that's still so far from safe. … For all those that didn't make it, who now rest in power and whose names we will never forget.

‘If I Was Your Girl’  by Meredith Russo
Okay so I was reading the back cover for this, right? Because I was at the library and I didn’t want to get a stereotypical cishet romance.
And this is what I read.
“Amanda Hardy is the new girl in school. Like anyone else, all she wants is to make friends and fit in. But Amanda is keeping a secret, and she’s determined not to get too close to anyone.
But when she meets sweet, easygoing Grant, Amanda can’t help but start to let him into her life. As they spend more time together, she realizes just how much she is losing by guarding her heart. She finds herself yearning to share with Grant everything about herself, including her past. But Amanda’s terrified that once she tells him the truth, he won't be able to see past it.”
Seems boring, right? A cliche romance about having a secret and not getting too close to anyone, ending in eventual heartbreak. Yada yada yada.
But then my eyes skipped down to the next line (because I can’t control them)
“Because the secret that Amanda’s been keeping? It's that at her old school, she used to be Andrew. Will the truth cost Amanda her new life, and her new love?”
Me: ... Yes.
And then I read this book and cried and smiled and was happy and sad and all these emotions ahhhh-
I loved this book.
The romance was great.
The way people didn’t always become super accepting when Amanda came out was realistic.
And like- character development? They have backstories and aren’t just there when the author needed them-
Like-
It was amazing.
Thank you for coming to this rambling session. <3

I've been thinking maybe a little too much about how when my local library wasn't almost exclusively open during school times, i would borrow the same seven or eight books at a time from the YA section and it got to a point where the librarian who was there pretty much every day just stopped reminding me that i'd already taken these seven or eight books out fifteen times because she realised i was just too attached to them, and then how the council subjected the library to extreme budget cuts, forcing them to close early and only be open at odd times of the day so i wasn't able to fuel my hyperfixation on these seven or so books until eventually all of them except two just faded into the back of my memory because one of them just had such a profound impact on how seven year old me viewed life and the other was the first book i borrowed without the careful supervision of my mum dictating what i could and couldn't read a lot

terfs celebrating that the international chess federation has banned trans women from competing in women's FIDE competitions, because it's sooooooo feminist to argue that women are so biologically inferior and nowhere near as smart as men and thus can't play chess on the same level. girl that's not feminism that's literally just misogyny
