Some things we learn, or have confirmed, in Murderbot ep 3 (SPOILERS, NATCH):
Murderbot can placidly ignore indirect orders, no matter how politely expressed. It can, however, choose to obey them... it does lower its helmet after Mensah leaves. (Petty little unit, isn't it? "I'll do it because I want to but not because you tell me to!") It's even learned to ignore "direct orders" from Ratthi, where they touch on human interactions. ("Get in here!" "Not a chance.")
Mensah knows this, but is bullheaded enough to keep trying. Go Mensah go! Treat that SecUnit like the person it is! Open up the team to include it!
Confirmed: Preservation Alliance isn't wealthy and needs resources. We kinda got hammered over the head with that in this ep.
Confirmed: BHARADWAJ IS NOT OKAY. Oh, honey. Somebody give you all the hugs please! (Mensah -- I assume it was Mensah -- leaving her behind, and not alone, was a good move.)
Gurathin continues with the full-on awkward. Bharadwaj doesn't want a therapy module; she wants a listening ear, Gura!
Mensah wants one too, but... Murderbot cannot be a dumping ground for her anxieties. It is right to walk away from her, though the nonverbal abruptness isn't exactly the best way to set a boundary (it's okay, Murderbot, we know you're trying, and Mensah dumping on you really was both unfair and othering -- she won't do this to any other team member, so why you?).
Pin-Lee is a pattern-seeker. It was smart of them to try to figure out whether there's a pattern in the comms satellite outages. We'll see this come back around, I'm betting.
Ratthi may be dealing with a substance-use disorder? Ouch. He's hard on himself about it, too. He has had a bit of a class-clown vibe so far, alongside a need to Fix Relationships...
... which, given the friction between Arada and Pin-Lee, is becoming difficult. I confidently forecast the said difficulty increasing.
Confirmed: tv!Murderbot has zero interest in being human. "Oh, hold on, I definitely am [more of a machine than Gurathin]." Origins ain't everything, MB, but you do you.
Gurathin's backstory is not looking like sunshine and roses. As someone who tiptoed around and hid a lot as a kid to escape my parents' or classmates' notice, I'm smelling "history of abuse and/or bullying" coming off him. Third possibility: child soldier of some kind -- that sure would explain the therapy modules. Whatever it is, though, I think Bharadwaj knows about it.
Gurathin does want to be human(e). From how he was looking at the pic of Mensah's kids, Mensah's heart is a lot of what draws him to her.
I'm enjoying the leakage between in-show shows and, um, actual show. The ending here? Classic soap-style cliffhanger (just like the first chapter of book!ASR, actually). Hell yeah let's cross narrative structures!
And we all know I have a thing about surveillance, so... we learn something about PresAlliance norms in this ep. Nobody caviled at Gurathin looking at Arada's feed after the millipede munch... but the PresAuxers and especially lawyer Pin-Lee think that SecUnit monitoring their logs (especially without notice) is Super Not Okay.
(PIN-LEE, WHY DID YOU NOT READ THE CONTRACT AND NOTICE THIS IN IT. I'M SURE IT WAS THERE. Yeah, yeah, fine, it's a hit at shitty privacy policies and ToSes, I get that, but sheesh, YOU ARE THEIR LAWYER. THIS IS ON YOU.)
Can I just say I'm in love with Noma Dumezweni's voice? The warmth, the resonance, the depth. Gorgeous.

actually if i'm gonna make a games rec post.
here are some games i have enjoyed recent-ish.
kenshi. an open-world squad-based rpg with base-building elements. get stronger by getting beaten up. lose a fight and get knocked out, have your weapons and food taken by the bandits that mugged you and left you bleeding to death. get rescued by some slavers that capture you and sell you into slavery. free yourself from slavery and limp away until you roll in hours later with a whole squad of overpowered fighters. then head a little bit too far south and get murdered by skin bandits. they take your skin. this is a completely self-directed game; there's no "main plot", although arguably "figure out the history of the world" is kind of the main 'story' mystery. there's also a bunch of unique recruitable characters with custom-written interactions. i usually recruit exclusively from freeing slaves but you can do w/e.
wildmender. a survival gardening game. this one came out recently and the devs are still releasing bugfixes; it's unclear if they'll make large content patches in the future. apparently multiplayer can still be pretty glitchy, and there's a water flow bug that i've been finding very frustrating. the way biomes work is kind of unsatisfying. kind of slim content-wise, but still, i really enjoyed what's there. out of all of the climate change terraforming anxiety games i've seen, this has been the one i've most enjoyed.
hellpoint. a scifi soulslike made by a team of like 12 people. previously i had thought things like "it would be neat if dark souls was less linear". hellpoint is a great example of why that might be a nightmare. the areas are connected in such a complex way, with one-way routes and branching unlock keys and secret paths and hidden doors behind hidden doors that it gets profoundly disorienting. a hint: almost every single hidden door in the game (there are a lot) is the middle panel of the same exact three-paneled-wall geometry. once you notice what it is you will see it everywhere. also, the enemy designs are hot.
crystal project. remember playing fan translations of final fantasy v? remember wandering around in old mmos? crystal project is kind of a... turn-based rpg mmo-influenced platformer. with a job system. you can sequence break the game from the tutorial level and also at basically every other point in the game too, although until you know what to look for it might seem like there's a linear critical path. but there's a lot out there. hint: play on easy mode. the combat gets tough later on and the game absolutely expects you to be finding and exploiting some class combinations.
astlibra: revision. a sidescrolling rpg. it must have been released episodically originally or some of the chapter pacing makes no sense. also it was originally released with a mess of art sourced from all sorts of places; 'revision' is a re-release with a more unified art style. it gets extremely anime all the time. there's a whole obligatory section where you have to ask all the women in a town about what kind of panties they're wearing. it's rough. i enjoyed how chaotic the systems are and how much Stuff there is to pick up and upgrade and unlock. the plot goes some unexpected places though it doesn't quite stick the landing, i still enjoyed what it did. also karon should be the love interest instead.
silicon zeroes. a cpu-building puzzle game. this straddles the line between the tech/code games that are literally just "learn a new language and code in it" and ones that are more structure-themed like, idk, spacechem. connect modules to assemble solutions to problems. it takes too long to get to chapter 3, which is where they start asking you to make entire cpus.
ashen. another souls-like. i just really like the environments in this one. the initial area looks gorgeous and the way it changes through the game is really neat to see happen. the seat of the matriarch is wonderfully awful to traverse and i wish there had been two or three more dungeons like it in the game. you can't level up; you gain stats mostly by progressing sidequests and the name quest. i eventually ran out of things to spend money on AND inventory space to store items. the late-game tuning is a little rough but until then it's great. a hint: there are three weapon types and within that type nearly all the weapons are identical. you get thrown so many weapons that don't matter; don't worry about collecting all of them. see above re: running out of space and things to use money for.
i guess it would be cheating to recommend minecraft regrowth or morrowind but i have also been playing those.

An old friend has come riding in as the first new War Bots cast member of 2025... or well, "friends" might be more appropriate, because this is the defending duo of Hestia and Heracles!
(Story and gameplay details below, be warned that it's a lot for both.)
Originally an aspiring young engineer from Haven 2, Hestia grew disillusioned with the increasing control of the Haven government. After publicly speaking out against them, she was pressured to leave her home for a more like-minded crowd, which she found all the way in the vast expanses east of Haven 1. There she learned of Catherine Gildplate, the leader of an Outlander set with the goal to steal Haven shipments and redistribute the resources to other Outlander factions in need. Gildplate quickly saw Hestia's talents, and offered to accommodate her engineering projects in exchange for making the weapons her enforcers needed to carry out their shipments.
While working with Gildplate and her gang, Hestia met one of these enforcers, a silent bot named Wilderoad, who tasked the engineer with making a custom revolver. While working on the project, the two quickly became friends, with Wilderoad respecting Hestia's blunt attitude, and Hestia respecting Wilderoad's capacity to listen. The collaboration resulted in the Spring Revolver, a spring-loaded ball-bearing launcher with potency shockingly similar to a conventional firearm, which the sharpshooter wielded exceptionally.
However, one day, Wilderoad vanished without a trace, with everyone in the gang clueless as to why. It wasn't until much later that Hestia found the likely reason: Gildplate had been taking shipments from not just the Havens, but also raiding other Outlander factions, and selling whatever she had to the highest bidder. Hestia had spent these years thinking she was helping people who needed it, not just someone else seeking power. Once again, Hestia had nowhere else to turn but the road, once more alone.
But knowing she would need someone to turn to, Hestia devised a solution for someone she could rely on no matter what, which led to her greatest creation: Heracles, a noble steed designed to protect Hestia and those in need, with a synthetic personality module making him comparable to the behavior of a large dog. Together, the two ride from town to town, using Hestia's engineering skills to help, and fighting as one to defend the defenseless.
Not long after hearing of Haven 2 going dark and the advancing Plantoid invasion, word got around that fighting on the frontlines of this new war is a tenacious little gunslinger. Not wanting to let her old friend down, or enjoy too much of the action, Hestia and Heracles ride off into the biggest fight of their lives.
Hestia is a Tank specialist who brings a new spin on some established concepts, with a simple base gameplan that gets much more complicated with her unique mechanics.
To explain Hestia, the best place to start is her Accessory, her Mount of choice. While she has multiple possible mount options, her default steed is Heracles, so for this explanation he'll be used as the example. Heracles and Hestia act as two distinct characters with separate health and unique sets of abilities. Hestia starts each life riding Heracles, but can swap to playing on her own with her Accessory ability ("E" by default on keyboard), Mount/Dismount. Press the button while riding Heracles to Dismount, leaving him in place, and press it while Heracles is nearby to Mount him again. If Heracles is too far away to mount, pressing the button will command him to come to you as close as he can. As a last resort, you can order Heracles to retreat by holding the interact button ("F" by default), causing him to leap out of the fight entirely, but go on a 30 second cooldown before he can be re-summoned using the Mount/Dismount input again. While riding Heracles, Hestia is entirely protected by him, and any attacks aimed at her will instead damage the mount. If Heracles is fully destroyed, he will automatically retreat, and force off Hestia while going on his full 30 second cooldown. If Hestia is defeated while dismounted, Heracles will also automatically retreat and rejoin her when she spawns back in.
Now to explain the duo individually after their swapping mechanics are established, starting with Hestia.
Hestia is the smallest character on the roster in both health bar size and stature, smaller than Xenir and with less health than sneaky mobile duelists Poppett and Nekross, each of the two having 175 HP while Hestia has a mere 150. Her innate abilities are similarly unimpressive, with her Weapon being the basic Pistol, a rapid-fire medium-range weapon with unimpressive damage, especially compared to other Tanks. However, it does outrange the optimal range of most other tanks, and with decent headshot aim can be a viable way to take out an over-eager flanker, or make the difference in helping an ally take out an enemy from a distance. Hestia also has the passive ability to Wall Scamper by holding jump against a wall, letting her quickly climb up and slightly angle her ascent by holding left or right. While not as flexible as Lyonn's wall climb, it's faster for a quick escape option, and can be used to get high ground for a vantage point to attack from.
Heracles meanwhile is a bulky close-quarters attacker, with some of the highest health in the cast (500, tied with Harmony) and slightly above average base movement speed. This health and speed lets him get in close for his main attack, Horn Slash, a sweeping melee attack that does heavy damage per swipe but is limited in range. Each hit also brings enemies slightly closer in, making it easier to land subsequent hits. Heracles also has an ability by pressing the Body ability input (left Shift by default), Ram Horn. after taking a moment to get ready, Heracles will rush forward horn-first for a set distance, or until hitting a wall. Upon running into an enemy, Heracles will grab them with his horn, then fling them straight up into the air. While running, Heracles can be steered slightly left or right, and can cancel the ability by pressing the input again. Hestia can also Dismount Heracles while he's running and he will continue on, letting Hestia follow up immediately on a potential successful fling, though he'll be stuck running directly forward and only stop early if he hits a ledge.
Finally, Hestia's Body equipment is what defines her defender role, and bonds both rider and mount. The gauntlet on her arm, the Carapace Projector, is a device that prompts Hestia's mount to project a defensive field. While Mounted, Hestia can hold alt fire (right click by default) to plug it into the mount's back to produce an Elytra Shield, a large front-facing barricade that blocks enemy ranged attacks but has no effect on attacks from allies. The shield follows the mount's front based on your aim, but slows their movement and prevents them from attacking while it's held. While Dismounted however, Hestia can press the input to remotely signal the mount to raise or lower the shield. While the mount can't aim or move the shield on its own, Hestia can use any of her abilities while the shield is up, letting it act as stationary cover Hestia can attack from behind. By default, remotely activating the shield is based on a toggle, while using it while riding is based on holding the input. These controls can be individually swapped as optional settings, but regardless of control type the remote version of the ability has a very brief cooldown when the shield is retracted before it can go back up, while the mounted version does not. Hestia also uses the Carapace Projector for her dismounted melee attack, Gauntlet Bash, an unassuming swipe of her arm braced by the gauntlet, which is a bit slow for a melee attack but has slightly better damage to compensate, and deals minor knockback on hit. However, this swipe has a secret additional function: with good timing, this attack can entirely nullify enemy projectiles hit by the slash! This is risky due to the slow attack speed leaving you wide open if you miss, but can save you in a crucial moment without any better options. Heracles has no equivalent attack, and the melee input while controlling him instead uses his primary attack instead.
Hestia's alternate pistols and gauntlets need more time in the workshop before they're ready to explain, and her other mounts have full notes but need art more than your average "accessory" in order to properly communicate, so they'll get their own posts later.
Overall though, Hestia is quite possibly the most unique bot in the cast, with unique access to two distinct kits at once. Hestia is weak, but her small frame and free mobility let her get wherever she wants to be, while Heracles is a strong frontline defender who can roll out quickly, but is limited to close range. The duo is at their strongest together, but knowing when to use their strengths separately is when their strategies truly come together. Position Heracles as a powerful source of cover for your team, while Hestia pesters from a distance at a unique angle Heracles can't reach, or simply fight with them from the ground behind him too. Alternatively, use the ability to move while shielding if mounted to lead the charge for your teammates behind you. These unique possibilities are what sets Hestia apart from anyone else in the lineup, and only get more advanced with alternate equipment completely overhauling these dynamics.
So that's Hestia (and Heracles) to kick off my art for 2025! For some context, this is a mashup of an old War Bots concept of a "mount and rider" tank originally named Dinastus. Dinastus would've been a small beetle-themed knight bot riding in a spider-themed walker mech. The roles were somewhat reversed however: Dinastus was a melee fighter with a shield and dash, while the spider had a ranged weapon and a big Winston-esque shield it could project around itself. I liked this dynamic, but felt there was just too much going on for one character given the environment of War Bots, particularly the fact that both halves had reliable defensive abilities. I later realized the perfect way to salvage this concept, and with a pair of characters I already liked a lot: my first ever DnD character, Hestia! It was a pretty elegant fix, with Heracles already being a melee-only powerhouse while Hestia is the small but nimble gunslinger. Believe it or not, her history with Wilderoad was also part of the original DnD campaign as an NPC I suggested as part of Hestia's backstory there, though they had existed beforehand. In case you're curious, Hestia was a Kobold Artificer, while Wilderoad was a Goblin Gunslinger. Even between realities, little guys gotta stick together. I figured this established connection would help Hestia fit better into the cast while also offering a good way to introduce some of Wilderoad's mysterious past, plus elaborate more on the Outlanders as a faction. Even if I my priorities are generally gameplay first when planning the roster, this all felt like too good of a coincidence to pass up.
Hestia's alternate mounts also have history as part of the DnD campaign, though it'll be juuust a little bit longer before those are ready for a proper reveal. After that, perhaps expect another list of interactions between Hestia and the rest of the cast. I can't promise the other three remaining characters any time soon though, my main motivation for getting Hestia ready now was just so I could stop needing to dance around namedropping them when they were just some new art away from being ready.
I'll probably get to working on something completely unrelated soon, perhaps an entirely (or mostly) new smaller-scale world. Gotta admit, two robots was maybe not my best way to ease back into art for the first time this year. Ah well, until then!

We started creating the game from scratch, namely by writing the Game Design Document, and only after that, we initiated the development process, making level design, mechanics, and other things. It is implemented on the Unreal Engine 5.
Each module suggests unique interactive experiences to make learning more fun. For example, if you want to escape from an alien spaceship, solve a math problem. So, students are in for an engaging learning experience that won't bore them.
Also, the game has a progress tracking system to see progress and work on mistakes more effectively.
