The End of an Era, and the Road Ahead

Hi everybody, the recent news about Dashingdon shutting down feels like it's a bittersweet turning point for many in the ChoiceScript community. Before Don stepped up and took things into his own hands, volunteering his own money, manpower, and time to create and maintain the site, there was no good way for people to host ChoiceScript demos and games in one place: I think the previous solution had been different Dropbox links (which was eventually nuked by security changes in how they hosted files) and possibly separate Neocities sites? Without the Dashingdon site, none of us would have had such an incredible space to gather, share and explore and experience games together, or--for some--even feel motivated to write a ChoiceScript game in the first place, not without an easy and intuitive way of sharing it with others in a playable format. The Dashingdon site significantly lowered the barrier of entry for anyone wanting to make or play or share games; more than that, it was a place of memories, creativity, and connection, and I fully believe that it served as a vital backbone of the ChoiceScript community for many years. A lot of that community relies on the efforts of volunteers--including the creator of CSIDE and the moderators on the forums--and, as with them, I can only thank Don wholeheartedly for his generosity and his 10 years of tireless, selfless, and often thankless work. The fact that a lot of people didn't even know he was a volunteer shows his altruism!

However, all of that work could have only fallen on the shoulders of one person for so long. It's a sad loss to see, though, and I'm very sorry to everyone mourning the loss of the community space, old or inactive WIPs, and save files that will be lost when Dashingdon goes dark at the end of the month. I do wish that there could be an official, stable, company-supported place for authors to host their games in one place, but at least there are alternatives for people to migrate to! (Thank you too to @hpowellsmith and everyone in the community who's taken it upon themselves to spread the news and try to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone surprised by this announcement. And thank you to the volunteer who's taken up the banner at cogdemos.ink!) I don't know if cogdemos.ink has a page set up to help defray costs, but Dashingdon himself has a ko-fi if you want to leave a tip or thanks for his years of service to the community!

To that end, I want to reassure you all that Shepherds of Haven is safe and isn't going anywhere, and that this change won't affect the game's future. The news has, however, sped up my announcement of something I've been working on for a long time: transitioning away from ChoiceScript and moving Shepherds of Haven to Twine.

Granted, this wasn't how I originally planned on sharing this news. Patrons have known about this move since I decided on it, but I'm a dogged perfectionist, possibly to a fault. I wanted everything to be absolutely polished before unveiling the Twine build, but this unexpected news has been the nudge I needed to take the leap sooner. It's always been my habit to polish my work to an extreme degree: I will rewrite entire novels five, seven, however many times it takes before I send it to my agent or editor... or even before I show it to my own fiance! I still haven't let him read Shepherds, or the novel that I've been talking to him about since 2019, because it "isn't ready" yet, not in my own mind. A common refrain I've always heard from career associates is that my work is "unusually impeccable" by the time it hits their desk. When I do share something, it's usually done. But if I'm learning anything as I grow as a writer, it's that progress matters over perfection. The sudden closure of Dashingdon has made me realize that no one moment will ever feel perfect--and that’s okay. I have to accept that things will never be as perfect as I want to make them before I let them out into the world. Instead of holding myself to an impossible standard, I’m embracing this opportunity to push forward and bring you something I'm truly proud of. (However nerve-wracking that may be!) So, instead of reuploading the ChoiceScript demo somewhere else, only to take it down again later, my efforts are going to shift entirely to getting the Twine version ready for release. It’s a huge task, but it ensures I’ll have complete control over Shepherds of Haven and its future. If I drop everything and focus entirely on this for the next several weeks, my best estimate is that it will take 3-5 weeks of full-time work to make that final push and finally get everything caught up and ready.

Why Twine? There were a lot of reasons behind my decision to move. The biggest of all was that, as the game's wordcount grew, so too did my creative vision for it, and I found myself longing for a version of ShoH that could be just as visually rich and mechanically engaging as I was imagining. Codex entries, interactive maps, infinite saves that can be downloaded directly to your device! Moving to Twine removes the limitations of ChoiceScript's simpler engine, and allows me to honor the game's creative potential and deliver on it in a way that feels true to the journey we've shared so far. It's also a platform that offers greater flexibility and independence for both me and the game: I've put so much work into this project that I'd prefer for its success to rest more in my hands, even if that means taking on the monumental task of publishing it myself, rather than anyone else's.

So. Both the public demo and the alpha build will be released in Twine as soon as I can make that happen. The majority of the work's already done--I just need to get the alpha build caught up with some lingering day off interludes and Chapters 8.5 and 9, and I need to address a queue of lingering quality-of-life questions and tweaks. I want to also note that, while there are very exciting additions to unveil, everything foundational to ShoH remains exactly the same. The story, text, and original functions have been ported in their entirety to Twine, outside of basic edits and refinements that would have happened in the normal course of revision, anyway. I have even taken pains to implement a visual "classic" setting that will replicate the font, colors, and general simplified look of the original version, if players want to use that instead. :) But otherwise, this thing is stuffed to the gills with awesome new features. Custom music soundtrack! Clickable maps! Actual trading card collectibles! Stunning new art! Revamped codex and store and inventory systems! Helpful tutorials and autosave points! Important quality of life improvements, like being able to select pronouns separately from gender and change them any time! This doesn't even touch the surface of it, but needless to say, I think we're going to have a lot of fun. Thank you all for your patience, encouragement, and support so far, and please give me some time to get my ducks in a row. A new version of Shepherds of Haven will be ready for you to play soon!

There are very few things I find more sinister than liberalism's consistent refusal to acknowledge reality outside of the world of their ideals. We sometimes pass around the more egregious examples of this and ridicule the disconnect, but at its core it's something very unsettling.

To the reality of a normalized systematic violation of people's dignity and life, liberalism's only answer is to close its eyes, recite the 1949 declaration of human rights or whatever other document it finds more suitable, and declares those transgressions to be illegal. Where is the inalienability of the right to shelter or food when struggling workers are evicted and left homeless to die of exposure because the bank or the landlord did not get paid? Where is the equality of every human at birth when more than half of the earth's population was condemned at the moment of their birth to forever toil for a foreign or national capitalist extracting their land's wealth? Where is the right to equality under the law when each and every judicial system so clearly favors those who provide the courtroom's electricity? Where is the right to freedom of expression when the bourgeoisie's media conglomerates slander every organized member of our class and forever maintain the monopoly of debate? Where is the representation in electoral systems without any accountability measures beyond a choice every 4-5 years and which consistently defends the interests of a class foreign to our own?

You see, every single one of these examples is simply a glitch, a fault in the perfect liberal system. And it does not matter how permanent these supposedly incidental flaws are, because the system is supposed to work for everyone. Things really aren't that complicated, you unruly worker, you traitorous agent. Why don't you keep on producing value like a good little laborer and let our analysts and economists tell you how good your life really is?

Liberalism's school of thought requires disdain for the social majority, because it also requires a total indifference to the unrelenting pain and indignity our class suffers, especially in the imperliazed world. The way in which that indifference manifests is vile too. Not only does liberalism cause, protect, and worsen the exploitation on which it stands, it also cries crocodile tears at its own inhumanity. It offers a myriad of solutions, based on its nominal ideas of an incorporeal justice and freedom. But the same hand it offers us is the same hand with which it pushes us down further into the sea of injustice that it created.

And what happens when the subjects become tired and aware of this game? The patina of compassion and justice is scrubbed off, revealing the intricate structure of capital. It will use every resource avaliable to slander, sabotage, mutilate, rape, traumatize, torture, murder every single worker who dares to build a world for themselves. In spite of the sheer brutality deployed every time, sometimes it's not enough and we win. And it makes sure every other worker either forgets it ever happened, or creates an vilified image of it. Afterwards, of course, the mask of normalcy returns.

There is no endgame for liberalism, no ultimate real purpose. The normal affair of things will continue to function as they always have, the same interests will be defended, the same threats and punishments will be levied against the working class, the same things will continue to worsen, and capital will continue to reproduce. No one is less aware of what liberalism defends than liberals themselves. And at the same time, no one else has such a sharp intuition of exactly what they are supposed to defend. No common liberal will ever willingly tell you that they support the violence we suffer constantly, but oh will the hairs at the back of their necks stand up when you ever dare to question their status quo.

PETER STRAHM character analysis/fanon + canon comparing - (as someone who’s rewatching the SAW films again).

Peter Strahm, introduced in Saw IV and continuing through Saw V and Saw VI, is an obsessive and determined FBI special agent with a relentless need for answers. His arc is one of the most intense in the franchise, characterized by his razor-sharp intuition and a growing descent into paranoia as he uncovers Jigsaw’s legacy. Played by Scott Patterson, Strahm quickly became a fan-favorite character due to his intelligence and defiance, but fanon interpretations of his character often add layers that aren’t entirely supported by canon.

Peter Strahm’s introduction in Saw IV establishes him as an efficient, no-nonsense FBI agent, deeply invested in solving the Jigsaw case. Unlike other law enforcement characters, he refuses to let anything stand in his way, even when it means breaking protocol or putting himself at personal risk. He’s sharp, aggressive, and uncompromising.

• Saw IV (00:35:12): “I’m not leaving here until I know what’s behind that door.” – This line perfectly illustrates Strahm’s refusal to back down, even in dangerous situations. It foreshadows his downfall, as his inability to relinquish control leads to his undoing.

In Saw V, Strahm’s arc deepens as he becomes increasingly isolated. He begins piecing together the connections between Jigsaw, Detective Mark Hoffman*, and the series of traps. What makes his character compelling is his growing paranoia—yet, at the same time, his deductions are mostly correct. His downfall isn’t that he’s wrong but that he’s playing a game he doesn’t fully understand.

• Saw V (00:49:23): “If you’re good at anticipating the human mind, it leaves nothing to chance.” – Strahm directly quotes Jigsaw here, signaling his complete immersion in the case. He begins to think like the killer, which ironically seals his fate.

Strahm’s biggest strength—his refusal to stop—also becomes his biggest weakness. In Saw V, he becomes so consumed by his need to expose Hoffman that he falls into a trap of his own making. The iconic glass box trap is the ultimate representation of Strahm’s failure to trust anyone but himself. While Hoffman locks himself safely inside the box, Strahm refuses to consider that stepping into it could be his only means of survival.

• Saw V (1:14:56): “You think you’re smarter than me?” – This final exchange with Hoffman is drenched in irony. Strahm’s belief that he has outmaneuvered Hoffman is shattered in moments when the walls close in on him, literally crushing his stubbornness and ego.

Fanon often portrays Strahm as a tragic antihero or, in some cases, an alternate version of Jigsaw himself—a man who could have followed in John Kramer’s footsteps had things played out differently. While there’s little concrete evidence to support this, the idea has gained traction due to Strahm’s obsession and his tendency to operate outside the law.

Fanon Theory 1: Strahm as a “Reverse Jigsaw”

One of the most fascinating aspects of Strahm’s character is his descent into isolation. As he gets closer to the truth, everyone around him becomes a potential threat. He trusts no one, not even his partner, Agent Perez.

• Saw V (00:32:45): “They’re all in on it.” – This line shows how deeply paranoid Strahm has become. He’s correct about Hoffman, but his belief that the conspiracy is larger than it is ultimately works against him.

The fanon interpretation of Strahm as a man driven to the brink by his obsession is consistent with his portrayal in the films. However, some fan theories take this further, suggesting that Strahm may have orchestrated certain traps himself or had a deeper connection to Jigsaw. These ideas are fun to explore but fall apart when closely examined against canon material.

Strahm’s character stands out in the Saw franchise because of his complexity. He isn’t just another cop trying to stop Jigsaw; he’s a man caught in a web of his own making. His sharp instincts, paranoia, and refusal to back down make him one of the most compelling characters in the series.

While fanon expands his story in fascinating ways, canon firmly positions him as a tragic figure—a man who got too close to the truth and paid the ultimate price for it. His final moments in Saw V are a haunting reminder that, in Jigsaw’s world, survival often requires more than intelligence; it requires the ability to trust, adapt, and let go.

As I wrote in my piece on Friday, ”Zelensky's Conduct Indicates He is Accustomed to Ukraine Calling the Shots”: Zelensky’s conduct during his Oval Office meetings strongly suggested his confidence that Ukrainian’s oligarchic state—of which he is the dictatorial figurehead—has been calling the shots in Washington for the last four years.

I just saw a New York Post report that confirms my intuition. Turns out, Zelensky met Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) before he met President Trump at the Oval Office. As the Post reported:

Before meeting Trump, Zelensky met with anti-Trump Democrats who advised him to reject the terms of the mineral deal the president was offering, according to Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). “Just finished a meeting with President Zelensky here in Washington. He confirmed that the Ukrainian people will not support a fake peace agreement where Putin gets everything he wants and there are no security arrangements for Ukraine,” Murphy’s office posted on X at 11:15 a.m. Friday. He attached a picture of Zelensky at a conference table, with Murphy seated on the opposite side. Forty minutes later, Zelensky arrived at the White House, where Trump met his car, smiled, shook his hand and walked him into the Oval Office.

This is consistent with my suspicion that many Democrat politicians have been acting as agents for the Ukrainian state. They may claim that their agency is purely out of personal conviction in the righteousness of the Ukrainian cause, but the sheer amount of public money that has been transferred to Ukraine raises the suspicion of corruption.

Wanted to give all of you a gift to celebrate my birthday - and we're going to start out with Jack Daniels. You’ve been surveilling a target for hours when you feel it - eyes on you, the source unknown. 

It should terrify you, especially since you’re out in the open, in an unfamiliar place. But instead of letting yourself worry, you just pick up your coffee cup and take a sip, scanning the tables that surround you and trying to figure out who might be watching you. 

There’s no one on your radar, because no one that’s come and gone throughout the afternoon has seemed suspicious. They haven’t triggered the facial recognition in your sunglasses, and aside from the waitress, there hasn’t been a single person to even speak to you since you hung up with Ginger earlier in the day and headed out. 

But the feeling only grows stronger, your intuition telling you that even if you can’t find the source of the gaze, someone is looking. 

You feel it then, a hand on your shoulder from behind, fingers tightening over your bare skin. Before you can move to grab the blade in your laptop bag, you hear it - a voice in your ear, tone low and familiar. 

“Hey there, Agent. Happy birthday.” The words are followed by a press of lips to your cheek, and although your heartbeat is still quick, the elevated pace isn’t from anxiety. Instead, it’s from his proximity, even though having Jack Daniels close to you is nothing new. “Surprise.” 

You stand immediately, turning to face him, and even though you know exactly what’s waiting for you, your eyes widen and your grin grows at the sight of his face, Jack’s normally smooth cheeks covered in stubble and his skin just a little more golden than usual. “You’re here.” Breathing the words out, you step even closer, your arms winding around his neck as Jack’s move to your waist. 

“‘Course I am, darlin’.” He winks, shrugging his shoulders. “You thought I’d miss this?” You didn’t, even though the parameters of your mission required you to spend time apart before you linked up to complete it. “No way in Hell.” 

He kisses you slowly, but wastes no time urging your lips to part with his tongue, Jack’s stroking along yours in broad daylight like you’d planned for him to interrupt your afternoon all along. You taste mint and coffee, and as your fingers tangle in the hair at the nape of his neck, you smile, finally registering what he’d greeted you with. And when you break away, blinking up at him while you catch your breath, Jack’s eyes are bright, his smile broad. 

“You remembered?” He nods twice, leaning closer and kissing you again before he speaks.

synopsis:

Years ago, Agent John Bishop discovered the secret formula to the Utroms’ mutagen, and with this new power, he decided to create mutant soldiers for the EPF. Infant mutant creatures were secretly raised within the walls of the EPF labs. Four mutants in particular showed great promise in their intelligence and skills, so Bishop decided to take them under his own wing, dubbing them the Renaissance Project. Appropriately named Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, these mutant turtles grow up calling Agent Bishop “father” and follow his every command.

Now they are 15, and doing field missions for the first time. But as they make friends outside the walls of the EPF bases they’ve grown up in, they discover more and more that maybe the EPF does more harm than good, and that they very well may be the villains in their story.

April O’Neil - Ever since she lost her job at Channel 6, April has been privately investigating the EPF to make a story to get her job back. When she accidentally bumps into the turtles while they’re on their first mission, she finds an opportunity to become their nanny to get closer to the EPF. But then she gets really attached to these boys. She’s intuitive, outspoken, and never afraid to take a risk.

Mona Lisa - Mona was a teenage college student who was accidentally mutated while on a trip. Now she spends most of her time on her roller derby hobby, as well as secretly working as a nighttime vigilante with her friend, Mondo Gecko. At first, people find her to be a jokester, immature and constantly making a scene, but she’s smarter than she lets on.

Casey Jones - A homeschooled teenage boy who escapes his troubled home life to fight crime. He never takes off his mask and his violent tendencies get him in a lot of trouble, but his heart is in the right place. Casey doesn’t have any friends, but that changes when he meets the turtles.

Mondo Gecko - Like the turtles, Mondo was also an experiment at the EPF headquarters, but he grew jealous of how the turtles were treated vs the other experiments, so he ran away. He’s moody and resentful, but Mona Lisa has brought out a fun-loving side to him. He enjoys skateboarding and occasionally joining Mona on her vigilante escapades.

Oroku Karai - Karai is the only child (sorta but that’s not important rn-) of the Shredder. She’s been training all her life to someday take over the Foot Clan after her father either retires or dies. Due to her yokai heritage, Karai was born part snake, with an ability to transform into a snake creature at will. When the Foot Clan forms an agreement with the EPF, Karai meets the turtles and constantly belittles them to make herself look better for her father. But her overconfident attitude hides an insecure heart.

Slash - Slash was an experiment of the EPF, but escaped when he was very young. His frightening appearance kept him alone for a long time, until he met Renet. The two became very close and Renet chose to help him become a time master student beside her. Now, they are time traveling partners and best friends. Slash seems gruff and quiet on the outside, but once someone gets to know him, they find he’s very laidback and quite affectionate.

Renet - Renet is a chipper teenage girl from a far off planet where time travel has been discovered. She is a student of the head Time Master, Simultaneous. Not long ago, she befriended Slash, and the two of them explore time together as best friends. But something in the time stream has trapped them in present day New York City, but Renet can’t seem to figure out what. So now she spends most of her time as a video game streamer.

Lotus Blossom - Lotus is a mysterious ninja bounty hunter who has no clan or family to her name. All who have met her find her somewhat unnerving, hearing distant voices when they speak to her. But despite her age, she is ridiculously good at what she does. Lotus Blossom can’t help but be surprised when Leonardo is the first person to show interest in her beyond her job, despite her strange, ghostly aura … Maybe even a little infatuated with him.

From the landscape sprung the flowers, but who formed the landscape? Newly uncovered texts indicate the folklore might be true and giants may have indeed roamed and shaped the earth.

I wanted to shine a light on this project because I met Luke at Dragonmeet in December '23 and fell in love with the way he thinks about RPGs, graphic design and play/ritual/thinking-the-world in his games!

I can't recommend this project enough and I've been waiting excitedly to support it and see it succeed! BIOGRAPHY

Charlie Moore was always a little off—not broken, just... misaligned. Born somewhere he never got to remember and raised just outside of Austin, Texas, Charlie was the lanky, awkward kid in every yearbook photo: too tall, too smart, too strange. 

He didn’t fit into the world around him—he never had. And kids are cruel when someone doesn’t fit.

High school was a battlefield. A quiet one, the kind with hallway whispers and bruises under sleeves. 

But Charlie endured. 

He worked out obsessively after school, building the armor he’d wished he’d had all those years. His body grew strong, but the boy underneath was still searching for peace, for purpose.

To pay for college, he took a job as a bouncer at a local club. He liked it more than he should have. Being the muscle felt good—simple, direct, physical. No ambiguity. It gave him the illusion of control in a world that had offered him none.

He earned his Master’s in Psychology at a young age, determined to become a therapist. He told himself it was to help kids like him—too bright, too strange, too sad. But underneath that noble cause, he also hoped someone would someday understand him in return.

But Charlie was more than strange. He had abilities—subtle ones he’d always chalked up to instinct or intuition. 

He could feel people. Read them. Not just their moods, but the very fiber of who they were. He could tell if someone was drowning in hatred or longing for connection. 

He could sense people like him—beings with something unnatural humming inside them. Powers. He could see through facades and gently push, alter, even suppress those abilities with just a thought. But he didn’t know it was power. He thought it was just... him.

Then HYDRA found him.

Disguised as a division of SHIELD, they spun him a story about doing good—finding others like him, guiding them, helping humanity evolve. It made sense to Charlie. It sounded like hope. He joined, became one of their top field agents. They called him a psychic tracker, a natural empath, a bridge between the enhanced and the ordinary. He believed them.

WHOOO is troy. i know orion. who is troy :3

Troy is the amazing spectacular transmasc dweeb!!! I wrote out a whole big thing at the bottom (im a professional yapper) but I also drew Troy, from his scared little youth straight out and away from the NSS (yellow), normal nerd who works at the museum (orange) and the steadfast ruthless leader of Siphon (red). Side tangent but as you may notice, colour theory and thermal colours are significant to his character.

Three important things to know about Troy!!!:

1. hes a nerd - Troy is super into history, especially the Great Turf War and its intricacies. there wont be a day where he doesn't talk to others (or himself) about something historical. He buys books and is a frequenter of the library, his mind being stronger and more powerful than his body.

2. hes very average wait scratch that - Troy is a very average, albeit more reserved and composed, inkling in the world of Inkopolis. Not the kind of person to like turf wars (he used to be very scared of them as a kid) but to people who know him surface level, he is normal.

That being said, his secret double life as AJAX, the leader of Siphon, is very far from average, kinda like being an agent of the NSS but if you were disillusioned from it at a young age, defected and created an organization later on to combat it. Thats essentially what Siphon is, trying to be a thorn in the NSS' side while also fighting against criminal operations in Inkopolis, it can almost be seen as an attempt to replace the NSS. Siphon tries to be the mediator between octarian-inkopolis tensions, trying to prevent the possibility of a new war (this is connected to Orion, his sister Oriana and their cousins).

Ajax, Troy's alter ego, is very assertive in his leadership and often crosses into being aggressive/volatile in action and behaviour. He is incredibly focused on tasks at hand, intuitive and a resourceful leader at best, but can also be ruthless, reckless and uncooperative if hes lost his temper. Hes lucky that the other members of Siphon (Stacey, Crassus, Bullet and Orion) are close friends of his and he has good communication with 3/4 of them. There is definitely a reason why Ajax is like this, and is connected to why he left the NSS and made Siphon. It also has a lot to do with his former NSS mentor Ace, who 'brought out the worst in him' as Troy would put it.

3. (mostly) honest and (fully)caring to all those around him - Troy always tries to be honest about his feelings (unless its about his secret life or hes with Orion) and hes never fake!!! never fake you guys. Hes a very loyal friend in fact, the last thing he would do is intentionally betray his fellow members of Siphon, or even his workplace friends! He will always listen if youve got something to say, unless you betrayed him or something. its his care for people and emotional-support-squid factor that initially made Orion not hate him as a kid(which eventually led Orion to become infatuated with him but thats a whole essay). Too bad he rarely gets or seeks out emotional support himself, given the stress caused by his double life and destructive alter ego, he may as well need it before things go especially south!!!

Took interest in guitar shortly after he turned six, right before his mom died. He didn't play for years after her death, but decided to pick it up again as a young adult.

Greatly resembles his father and the other men on his paternal side. He's been described as having his mother's eyes and some of her "softer" features, though. Absolutely built like a brick wall.

Born on September 17, 1993 in the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Hendrik Scholten de Ridder and Johanna Scholten de Ridder, Emiel had a normal – if not privileged, thanks to his family's prominent histories – early childhood. From birth, he had a close relationship with his older sister, Mylène, who he quickly came to rely on for guidance and support.

In the late fall of 1999, when Emiel was only 6 years old, his mother was killed by enemies of his father originally seeking to hold her and the children hostage for ransom. This event, paired with the traumas he sustained over his years in the military, drove his father to "near insanity" as he became consumed with paranoia and grief. The rest of his and his sister's adolescence was defined by the trauma of his father's abuse; he subjected the siblings to rigorous physical and psychological training in order to mold them into "perfect soldiers" and prevent any further loss.

Despite this, his father was publicly viewed as a war hero. He would often leave the two alone when he was on deployment, forcing Mylène to care for herself and Emiel with nothing more than a roof over their heads and grocery money provided. The siblings developed an unbreakable bond during this time that would extend into their adulthoods, rendering them a synergic duo both at home and in the field, with Emiel promising to repay his sister for her efforts someday.

After finishing secondary school at 17, Emiel enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army, serving in the Regiment Huzaren van Boreel in the 11 Air Assault Brigade. He also studied at the University of Amsterdam – taking online classes – and frequently visited his sister during her time in the 400 Medical Battalion, eventually graduating with a BA in Intelligence Studies. He spent 3 years participating in air assault and armored reconnaissance operations before passing selection for the Korps Commandotroepen in 2014, wherein he was quickly recognized for his natural skills in anything covert.

Specializing in sniper techniques, prime target elimination, VIP protection, demolitions, and sabotage, Emiel established himself as an elite operative who excels in hostile areas and hazardous environments. His exceptional accuracy and uncanny proficiency when operating in the shadows eventually earned him the nickname "Nightfall".

In early 2015, Nightfall joined his sister – now a KCT lieutenant nicknamed "Petra" – Captain Price of the British SAS, and Nikolai in an unsanctioned operation to kill or capture Chimera after the latter was discovered to be a traitor. The small team managed to track the Colonel and his supporters to a base deep in the Alps, where they successfully wiped out the entire group and killed Chimera. After the mission, much like his sister, Nightfall felt indebted to Price.

From then on, he continued to carry out covert and overt operations worldwide. Sometime in the next year, Nightfall managed to wipe out an entire base of Al-Qatala soldiers in one night without a single alarm being raised. The sole survivor referred to him as "The Reaper" when describing him, as he hunted every enemy whilst cloaked in darkness. Nightfall was later awarded the Military William Order, the Bronze Lion, and the Cross of Merit for both this operation and his following work within the KCT, establishing himself – or rather, his marksmanship – as a minor legend within the elite commando corps.

Another year later, around mid-2017, however, Nightfall was assigned to a unit led by Captain Price and Petra, tasked with infiltrating and securing an Al-Qatala base located in Kastovia. He served as the team’s scout sniper and overwatch during the mission, until he lost contact with the rest of the team. When the rest of the team finally reached his location to investigate, several IEDs planted in the area went off and forced the group to retreat. Despite his sister's attempts to rescue him, Nightfall was declared dead in absentia after demolition teams failed to locate his body the following day.

In reality, Nightfall was alive, being held as a prisoner of war by Al-Qatala’s commanders. The explosions caused him to lose one of his hands and left his face scarred. For the next two and a half years, Nightfall was interrogated, tortured, and subjected to inhumane conditions while imprisoned in Eastern Europe, though he still tried to support and protect the other POWs in the prison, regardless of which side they supported or whether they were civilian or military.

About a month after the formation of Task Force 141, CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell pinpointed the location of a prison in Georgia believed to be used by Al-Qatala to hold POWs. Reconnaissance of the prison confirmed this and the identity of several of the prisoners; Nightfall was identified as one of the POWs. His sister, leading an elite KCT unit, raided the location shortly thereafter, securing the captives, Nightfall, and intel about Al-Qatala's plans.

Following his rescue and intensive recovery in the hospital, Nightfall was deployed in Verdansk alongside other Coalition operatives under Armistice, where he relentlessly worked to prove himself once more.

As a valuable ally to the 141 and a near-fabled assassin with a long list of confirmed kills and countless unconfirmed, Nightfall has pledged his life and his very conscious to his work, his only saving grace being the characteristic pitch black masks obscuring his face every time he appears in the field – on the rare occasion he's visible, that is.
