Tuck Everlasting (2002)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Anyone who's ever been in a relationship will spot something wrong with Tuck Everlasting. If you’re a teenager or inexperienced in love it may take you a bit, but that’s alright. We’ll wait for you to catch up. This film’s romance is unconvincing and bland. When it fails to engage you, all you can do is ask questions about the stuff surrounding the love plot and under the pressure, the film crumbles.
15-year-old Winnifred “Winnie” Foster (Alexis Bledel) wants to escape the life her parents have laid out for her but in 1914, she has few options. In the nearby forest, she meets Jesse Tuck (Jonathan Jackson) as he's drinking from a fountain at the foot of an old tree. Spotted, she is kidnapped by his older brother Miles (Scott Bairstow) and brought back to the Tuck home. There, she's told by Angus and Mae Tuck (William Hurt and Sissy Spacek) that she cannot leave -not until they are sure she can be trusted with their secret.
It’s hard to talk about why this film isn’t successful without revealing the Tuck family secret but I think the first scene will give you a good hint and saying a little isn’t spoiling too much. They’re immortal. The fountain Jesse drank from? His family discovered it nearly a hundred years earlier. Since then, they haven’t aged a day and are impervious to injury or disease. With that established, let’s dig into the film's problems.
I try to restrain myself from applying real-world logic to fantasy stories. Let’s assume, for example, that the spring only came to be recently - otherwise you’d have invincible Tyrannosaurus Rexes terrorizing the town of Treegap. We’re told the water’s properties also affect animals. Does it mean herds of bullet-proof deer walk around the woods? Too harsh? Fine. Here’s a question. If the Tucks are so worried the nearby townspeople will discover their secret, why are they still living so close to where they were living a century ago? It’s not like they need to drink the water over and over to stay young. Why not leave before the people start wondering why the children never age? If the Tucks are worried the fountain of youth might fall into the wrong hands, why not destroy it?
It’s easy to see what this story wants to do. Winnie is a plain (but rich) girl who wants more than what life offers. She meets a handsome boy. They fall in love but a secret threatens to tear them apart. If he gives her the same water that made him immortal, they could be together FOREVER. Sounds great but as the rest of the family reminds them, immortality might not be all it’s cracked up to be. They’re right in a way. It’s easy to take something for granted when you know there’s no risk of it going away but this film is not smart enough to convince us. It’s like a multi-millionaire complaining that money corrupts and ultimately doesn’t buy happiness. I guarantee you it beats being poor. Miles' woes seem petty. Angus’ observations about what the family’s life has become are unconvincing. If you sat down and really thought about what it would be like to live forever you could come up with far better material than this.
But ultimately, this film is not about philosophical questions. It’s about a romance under threat. Both from real life coming dangerously close to catching up with Winnie and a mysterious man (Ben Kingsley) looking for the Tucks. Unfortunately, you don’t care about the love story. Winnie and Jesse don’t have anything in common, particularly not when you learn the boy is over a hundred years old. What does he want with a teenage girl? At least Edward Cullen had a reason; he was a vampire that could read anyone’s mind except for Bella Swan's. That made her special. What’s special about Winnie? Nothing. Her only noteworthy trait is being so nondescript any teenage girl can effortlessly insert herself into her shoes. It may be enough to make younger viewers overlook the kidnapping stuff and William Hurt’s ear-splitting attempt at an accent.
Tuck Everlasting is the kind of movie you watch when you’re young and then grow out of. Any serious questions about its plot immediately become too much for it to bear. You could do much worse but unlike the Tucks, your time is limited. Don't waste it. (Full-screen version on VHS, April 2, 2020)

Dracula (1992)
My rating: 6/10
This movie is at its best when it's trying to be a very faithful adaptation of the novel, with its high melodrama, weird, almost expressionist visual flourishes and technicolor shenanigans. It's at its worst whenever it tries to add to the narrative, because what it adds is mostly a bullshit reincarnation/romance subplot and a whole bunch of needless tits.

Day 8: Dustin Hoffman
Tumblr media
This is the great Steven Spielberg's take on a sequel to Peter Pan from 1991.
The art is a reference to ongoing shipping between an older Maggie Banning and Captain Hook. Thank you @skirtzzz & @slack-water for the inspiration/curse.
More notes/links in Keep Reading.
Tumblr media
Hook by Steven Spielberg (1991), an authorized live-action sequel. A family action/adventure film starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins and Maggie Smith. The film has a grown-up "Peter Banning" who has forgotten his childhood, lured back to Neverland by Captain Hook, who has kidnapped Peter's two young children in an attempt to once again find meaning in his life. Despite mixed reviews by critics, the film was popular with audiences and grossed nearly $120 million in the U.S., making it the 4th highest-grossing movie of 1991.
The red highlight will be mentioned later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dustin Hoffman makes an excellent version of Hook. Also, this version has a reference to Eton College (mentioned in my blog @music-meme-of-365-days) and has the proper hairstyle, a mustache as well a right-hand hook.
Tumblr media
So I mention that it has reference to Eton College and one of its screenwriters, James V Hart is the reason for this. He appeared in another Inktober with Count Dracula (see Bram Stoker's Dracula) and will appear again. But later in 2005, he wrote this…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Capt. Hook: The Adventures of a Notorious Youth by James V. Hart (co-writer of the movie Hook), Brett Helquist (ill.) (2005), an authorized (non-canon) prequel illustrated novel, published by HarperCollins in the US. Details the history of 15-year-old James Matthew, young Oppidan Scholar and future Captain Hook. The book portrays the villainous youth in a sympathetic light.
It is worth the read but warning it is mature….like even as a kid, James Hook is a bit of a nut. I am just waiting on a promised sequel.
But here is the link on Facebook...(you will need to log in for this one) upon which he gives a couple chapters for that sequel.…it is in the notes.
And by the way, I don't mind if it is not canon cause I love the different storytelling for Hook. Me mentioning the book while the book is in the corner of his photo…lol.
Here is the Youtube link as well as the Spotify Album.

Aiight, so the Coppola movie is suddenly on my shit-list (which sucks) for bastardising the vampiric r*pe of a character,  but Coppola just directed the thing, who wrote that bright idea?
Tumblr media
Time to check IMDb, this movie had to be a Weinstein production-oh hello writers section.
Tumblr media
Ah, some wise-guy named James. All right Jamie, what did you work on that should show how that was a good idea-
Tumblr media
NO!!!!!!! Smack-dead in between too!?
JAMES C’MON! YOU’RE BETTER THAN THIS!

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor
I fell down a bit of a heraldry rabbit hole recently and decided to spend several hours compiling info about the Penvellyn family off the wiki and then used online heraldry resources to analyze their individual coat of arms. Did the game devs intend the shields to be interpreted this way? Probably not. But if I dont over-analyze 20 year old childrens computer games what else am I going to do with my life??
Here are all the people whose portraits hang in the great hall along with info we learn about them from Jane (and occasionally Nigel), their coat of arms, and my amateur interpretation of the symbolism.
Randulf ( - 1401)
Tumblr media
“Randulf the Red, so named for his bright red hair, was considered a hero at the Battle of Poitiers. For his heroism, King Edward III awarded him with the lands in the region called "Penvellyn". That's how we got our name.”
Randulf's coat of arms says "IN HOC SIGNO" which translates to "in this sign (you will conquer)"
Comet; unknown in heraldry but refers to the family treasure
Red; Military might, warrior.
(putting the rest under the cut to save you much scrolling)
Odo (1354 – 1404)
Tumblr media
“Yeah, he isn't very exciting, really. Liked farming and cows. His son Milo is much more interesting.”
“Those Manuscripts are very old and brittle. They date back to the 14th century. Odo Penvellyn collected most of them. His father Randulf and son Milo were rather more interested in military victories than in book collecting.”
Odo's coat of arms says "PROSPERITAS" which translates to "success".
Milo (1376 – 1423)
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Deer/hart; One who will not fight unless provoked, peace and harmony
Tumblr media
“Milo inherited not only his grandfather's red hair but his military prowess. Milo was instrumental in the Siege of Caen and was awarded even more lands by Henry V.”
Milo's coat of arms says "VICTUM INVIDEO SILENTE" which translates to "the conquered shall envy the dead".
Hugo (1401 – 1466)
Comet; unknown in heraldry
Red; Military might, warrior
Teardrop; “One who has endured torrents”
Tumblr media
“Um, he had a lot of kids, and his dates were 1401 to 1466.”
Hugo's coat of arms says "CITO FIT QUOD DEI VOLUNT" which translates to "what the gods want happens soon".
Albert (1427 – 1508)
Bee; Industrious, diligent
Acorn; Antiquity, strength
Red; Military might, warrior
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Tumblr media
“He was very mysterious and the people of Blackmoor were afraid of him because he knew all these scientific things. No one knows much about him, though.”
Albert's coat of arms says "TIMENDI CAUSA EST NESCIRE" which translates to "ignorance is the cause of fear".
Edmund (1447 – 1499)
Book (open); Manifestation, knowledge
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Tumblr media
“He was into cows. He did a lot of breeding of cows and sheep and got some kind of award from the King.”
Edmund's coat of arms says "UT SEMENTUM FECERIS ITA METES" which translates to "As you sow, so shall you reap".
Charles (1478 – 1553)
Hawk (Falcon): One who does not rest until objective achieved, purpose, goal-oriented
Red; Military might, warrior
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Tumblr media
"Ooh, ooh - Charles was a very famous judge and wrote very important books on law. But his boy, Garrett, drowned when he was really young.”
Charles's coat of arms says "MINIMA MAXIMA SUNT" which translates to "The smallest things are the most important".
Thomas (1526 – 1584)
Rainbow; Good times after bad
Moon; Serene power over the mundane
Sun; Creativity and enlightenment
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Tumblr media
“He was Charles's grandson and wrote a lot of poetry. He also had 3 wives: Catherine, Anne, and Mary. But not like at the same time. They died and he just remarried.”
Thomas's coat of arms says "AGE PRO VIRIBUS" which translates to "in all that you do, do your best".
James (1560 – 1650)
Eagle (2 heads); Joining 2 strong forces
Purple; Nobility and justice
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
T is presumably for Thomas, no heraldic meaning
Tumblr media
“He never married but one day, when he was very old, a baby was found on the doorstep to the manor. He took her in and raised her as his own. That was Elinor.”
James's coat of arms says "ARS LONGA" which translates to "art lives long" (from the phrase, ars longa vita brevis - art is long, life is short).
Elinor (1626 – 1650)
Maltese cross; Blessings, protection
Red; Military might, warrior
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Purple; Nobility and justice
Tumblr media
“Just that she was burned as a witch but it wasn't true and her father, James, died when he saw her die and then the family fled to France. I don't want to talk about this.”
Elinor's coat of arms says "AUDACES FORTUNA IUVAT" which translates to "fortune favors the bold".
Corbin (1670 – 1741)
Lion rampant; Courage, integrity, strength
Red; Military might, warrior
Purple; Nobility and justice
Tumblr media
“Uh…I dunno. He doesn't have a coat of arms in the Great Hall because he didn't live here; wasn't even a British subject. That's all I know.”
Corbin's coat of arms says "NUNQUAM DEDISCEO" which translates to "never forget".
This shield is notably absent from the great hall, and also is the only one to feature decoration on the outside of the shield.
Sun; Fountain of life, intelligence, innovation, creativity, enlightenment
Wheat; Faithful
Vines/Ivy; Strong and lasting friendship, academia
Philippe (1689 – 1777)
Tumblr media
“He made a fortune in the New World and bought back most of the lands that were confiscated by Cromwell.”
Philippe's coat of arms says "NOVUS MUNDUS" which translates to "a new world".
Penelope (1714 – 1783)
Fleur de Lis; Symbol of France
Purple; Nobility and justice
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Tumblr media
“I don't know very much about her, except that she was very loved by practically everyone in England, and there were a million poems written about her.”
“Those are mainly Penelope Penvellyn's collections of French novels. She was a patron to a raft of artists, and her salon was quite popular. She was quite the libertine, even kept her maiden name after her marriage.”
Penelope's coat of arms says "PULCHRITUDO IN OMNIA" which translates to "there is beauty in all things".
Martha (1739 – 1791)
Pegasus; Poetic genius and inspiration
Fleur de lis; Symbol of France
Lion rampant; Courage and integrity
Wheel; fortune, cycle of life
Purple; Nobility and justice
Red; Military might, warrior
Tumblr media
“She was completely daft - she'd wear really bizarre outfits and she was one of the first women to ride on a steam train.” (This is particularly impressive as the steam train did not exist until 10 years after her death. Oops!)
Martha's coat of arms says "SINE SCIENTIA ARS NIHIL EST" which translates to "without understanding, art is nothing".
Brigitte (1759 – 1833)
Unicorn; Extreme courage, virtue, strength.
Teardrop symbolism; “One who has endured torrents” gold means generosity or elevation of the mind.
The gear and atom are not traditional heraldic symbols but can represent progress and science.
Red; Military might, warrior
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Blue; Truth, loyalty
Purple; Nobility and justice
Tumblr media
“She never married and was bonkers for astronomy; she adopted her sister's son, Richard, who later got killed at Waterloo."
Brigitte's coat of arms says "LUDI SINE GAUDIO LUDI NON SUNT" which translates to "sport without fun is not sport."
"Brigitte with her eyes so bright, looks toward heaven at midnight on the longest night of year, that's the one she holds most dear. 'Starry friends,' she's often heard to say, 'how I wish that I could make you stay.' She knows though they can't remain, time will bring them 'round again."
Only shield to have white decorations on the colored background
Star; Divine quality from above
Dove; Loving constancy and peace
Compass; Direction
Purple; Nobility and justice
Richard (1787 – 1815)
Tumblr media
“He died in Waterloo fighting against Napoleon.”
Richard's coat of arms says "SI SIC OMNES" which translates to "if only this could last forever".
Edward (1809 – 1904)
Banner down center shield (the Pale); Military or defensive strength
Star; Divine quality from above. The specific star (nautical star) is not traditional heraldry but symbolizes finding way home.
Red; Military might, warrior
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Purple; Nobility and justice
Tumblr media
“He was a big explorer and went all over the world. He wasn't very close with his son, who was also an explorer. They'd only see each other by chance in weird remote places like Samarkand or Walla Walla.”
Edward's coat of arms says "BIS VIVAT QUI BON VIVAT" which translates to "Whoever lives well lives twice".
Knight (especially on horseback); The soul guiding the body; man’s journey through life

William's coat of arms says "DIES PERDIDI" which translates to "another day wasted".

Red; Military might, warrior
Green; Hope, joy, loyalty
Tumblr media
“He was this huge naturalist and did a lot of exploration in the Amazon. I think there's a plant named after him. Or maybe a monkey; I forget.”

Malachi (1894 – 1972)
Parrot and mouth not traditional symbols but probably represent interest in wildlife and linguistics.

Tumblr media
“He was a doctor of medicine and did a lot of research on icky skin diseases.”
Malachi's coat of arms says "NUMEN LUMEN" which translates to "divine light is my guide".

Sun; Fountain of life, intelligence, innovation, creativity, enlightenment
Purple; Nobility and justice
Tumblr media
“He was my grandfather but I didn't know him because he died when I was little. I guess he was nice.”
Alan's coat of arms says "PURGAMENTUM EXIT" which translates to "garbage out" (referencing part of a programmers' saying "garbage in, garbage out").
Serpent; Wisdom
Red; Military might, warrior

Hello again! Please elaborate on why you don’t like Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) I love hearing people go off and I think I’ll agree with your conclusion since I don’t like it either haha
HI thanks for sending this as an ask!! Here's a very long, convoluted response. Warning: it is not proofread.
So, the main reason I don't like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) is because of accuracy. Now, I am completely fine when a book-to-film adaptation isn't a perfect recreation of the book (frankly thats impossible imo) but MAN does this adaptation do the original book injustice. The romance between Dracula and Mina?? The plot line about Dracula's dead wife? Renfield originally working with Harker?? MINA ATTEMPTING TO SEDUCE VAN HELSING???? Really, most of the injustice is done to Mina as a character. Book!Mina is such a strong, well written character. She is integral to the plot and to the book's structure (we would not have had all of the letters, newspaper clippings, and diary entries without her). The book itself states this with how often the Dude Squad (I think I got that title from an Overly Sarcastic Productions video, im going to keep using it) directly tell Mina that they could not have defeated Dracula without her. She is resilient, smart, and stands up for herself. 1992!Mina is not this. James V. Hart, who wrote the screenplay, took everything that made Mina Mina and created a stereotypical damsel character. It's a shame because I strongly believe that Winona Ryder could play a killer, book-accurate Mina Harker.
Speaking of who plays the characters... the cast is really hit or miss for me personally. I do think Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins are good picks (especially based off of the book portrayals) and I remember liking Cary Elwes as Arthur Holmwood. Tom Waits as Renfield is a pretty inspired choice ngl.
But. Keanu. Don't get me wrong, I love Keanu Reeves. I think he is great in Bill and Ted's and John Wick. But that's why it confuses me as to why he was cast in this film. He can't do the accent, he shows no emotion, and it sounds like he is remembering his lines as he says them. In fact, my family and I quote his lines in this film as a joke all the time ("Is the castle far?"). None of his former roles at the time implied that he would be a good Jonathan either.
I can't remember much of Gary Oldman's performance, I just know I didn't like it lmao. He made Dracula too suave when he's really just a Creature.
Note: in looking up the cast I was reminded that Richard E. Grant plays Seward and as a fan of Saltburn (2023) that is just. hilarious to me.
I only went into this movie because I was told I would like it because the production design was pretty. Honestly? It's not. The film is poorly lit and the costumes are questionably accurate. The few shots I can remember are for the wrong reasons- such as that One Scene with Lucy in the cemetery. I won't get into it much more, it makes me extremely uncomfortable, but its another instance of Bram Stoker's Dracula taking away everything that made the female characters interesting.
Honestly? The best thing I can say about this movie is that it included Quincey. He's my favorite and he usually doesn't make it to screen adaptations. I'm happy you're here buddy.
I think what infuriates me is the title. Bram Stoker's Dracula implies that this adaptation takes a lot from the book. It's not just Dracula, it's Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's like saying that this adaptation is the most faithful. But... it's not. Bram Stoker's Dracula takes more of it's inspiration from old Universal films and previous Dracula adaptations than it does from the actual book. Thats okay! I'm all for new interpretations of old stories. But if you're a new interpretation that changes half of the characters and plot, don't market said interpretation with the original authors name.
This is not Bram Stoker's Dracula, it's Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.
Which, even then, this is weak for Coppola. I'm not a huge fan of his work (I've seen The Godfather and Apocalypse Now) but I can understand and appreciate why he is as influential as he is. I think his films are well written and beautifully shot. He has great casts who elevate the writing and make their characters memorable. This film goes against all of that and that bothers me so much. It feels like a cheap imitation of Coppola's work.
Anyway- that sums up my thoughts on Bram Stoker's Dracula. I reallt enjoyed writing this, as someone who wants to be a film historian but doesn't actually get to do film-deep dives this was pretty refreshing haha. Good reminder that this is a film blog, not a podcast one.
Feel free to ask me more about movies, especially if you like Dracula! I am of the opinion that there is no good adaptation of Dracula... but I have ideas on how to fix that so...

Sahara (2005)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
On paper, Sahara sounds like a slam dunk. It’s Indiana Jones meets James Bond with big stars like Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz and armed with a budget to make all the stunt-filled adventure come to life. In practice, it’s devoid of any joy or excitement. Director Breck Eisner makes 124 minutes feel so much longer than two hours.
In 1865, the ironclad CSS Texas disappeared with the last of the Confederacy’s treasury gold. In present day, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) has finally found a clue to its final resting place: Mali. With his longtime bud and fellow treasure-hunter Al Giordino (Steve Zahn), he investigates. Along the way, the meet WHO doctor Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) as she investigates a mysterious plague she fears will soon ravage the country.
Based on the novel by Clive Cussler, this film adaptation tries to do too much. Sahara is essentially two movies slammed together. The first is a swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones. Boat chases, car chases, fist fights, impromptu survival techniques in the desert and a long-lost treasure? There’s no mistaking it. The other movie has an inconspicuous, beautiful doctor embroiled in a plot that begins as a threat to Africa but could endanger the whole world and includes a solar-powered laser beam, a mad dictator and businessmen devoid of morals. The problem is that these two plots exist independently and are not well blended. In one scene, Dirk and Al are dodging entire clips’ worth of bullets with big smiles while coming up with crazy ways to take down the villains on their tail by blowing up their own boat. In the next, a single bullet is treated with enough gravitas to give you a headache.
Also problematic are the actors. Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz are talented actors. Here? they’re awful. They’re even worse together. They have no chemistry whatsoever, which makes their plots feel even more akin to a mix of oil and water. You know they’re going to fall in love from the beginning but you’ll believe a metal boat from the American Civil War will make it across the ocean on no rations before you’ll believe that romance.
From the unfunny humor meant to endear you to the characters to the action scenes that prove the actors couldn’t throw a decent punch if their lives depended on it, Sahara suffers from major problems. It also gets the little things wrong. When Commander Rudi Gunn (Rain Wilson) approaches the United States Embassy for help, he's warned it’s unlikely aid will arrive in time because “No one gives a shit about Africa”. They're not wrong. Even this movie doesn't care about Mali or its people because moments later, we learn the thing that’s gruesomely killing en-masse will soon spread to the entire world. So it wasn’t enough that Mali would become the world's biggest graveyard; the entire human race has to be at risk? Yikes.
Then, there’s the climax. This is one of those movies where the villains must have the greatest employee benefits package of all time because the baddie's top bodyguard decides to get into a fistfight on top of a building that’s rigged to explode in a few minutes. How was he going to get out of there once he got the job done?
I can give a movie slack and accept a preposterous story but you’ve got to give me something in return. When your actors have no chemistry between them, the bad guys are completely forgettable, the humour falls flat on its face, the action scenes are badly shot & choreographed and none of what you see is interesting, you want to find some way to entertain yourself, perhaps by having some laughs at the film’s expense. You'd think it'd be easy when the Los Angeles Times listed this film as one of the most expensive flops of all time but you'd be wrong. Sahara is too dull to provide any form of entertainment.
