“I must balance vengeance and mercy. I must act in account to your life and account to those you have hurt.”
Here we have Keraunos, the title character of my developing graphic novel, versus his father, Zeus, in an epic climactic battle for the fate of the world. I have probably drawn this composition at least five times, trying to get it right, but this is by far the most detailed and complete rendering that I’ve been satisfied with. It’s certainly the most intricate digital composition I’ve made thus far, and I’m only just beginning.
I really do have high hopes for this project, seeing as I’ve been working on it for three years, but hopefully you all will see a finished product by the end of this year. Not necessarily a complete novel, but a set of chapters to show what’s to come. Graphic novels take a helluva long time to develop! What can I say! Anyways, I hope you enjoy this piece. Stay tuned as usual. :)
EDIT: I’ve made a blog here to compile all of my work. I’d appreciate a follow or two. And some reblogs would be nice. :)

hello!!! Dr. Reamen, I wanted to ask, did the Ptolemies know that Alexander was not related to them or did they really believe their own propaganda about being descendants of ATG?
Just a quick clarification: the claim was that Ptolemy I Soter was the bastard son of Philip, so they weren't descendants directly of Alexander, but of Alexander's father, making them Argeads. The person who made the claim was almost certainly Ptolemy's creepy son Ptolemy Keraunos,* who nobody liked much. He kept flitting between Diadochi courts when he'd outworn his welcome, assassinated someone, or conspired to assassinate someone. Ptolemy himself replaced him as heir with his younger brother, which started his perambulations, looking for support.
This claim also seems to have been made after Ptolemy I's death (contra Tarn). Ptolemy Keraunos made it because he was (briefly) king of Macedon. This was after Kassandros died (another liked-by-nobody figure who's father also passed him over), and his sons killed each other until Demetrios Poliorketes killed the last one. After Demetrios died, things in Macedon went wiggy (or maybe wiggy-er), which is when Ptolemy Keraunos took over before being killed in battle with invading Gauls. Antigonos Gonatos finally stabilized Macedon and instituted the Antigonid dynasty, which lasted.
Yet if Ptolemy Keraunos was making a bid to be king of Macedon, you can see why being the grandson of ol' Phil would be quite useful. Yes, it gives the Ptolemies a connection to Alexander, but it's really the connection to PHILIP, who was much more popular back home in Macedon, that Ptolemy Keraunos wanted.
Did later Ptolemies believe it? Possibly. Certainly the further they got from its origin, the more likely they probably were to accept it without squinting too hard...or recognizing the timing problems. (Philip would have had to be really young when he fathered Ptolemy.**)
There was a long-standing tradition in Greece of divine descent for kings. The Argeads themselves claimed it to Zeus via Herakles. Having a connection to the divine Alexander would have been right in line with that.
------------
See N. L. Collins "The Various Fathers of Ptolemy I," Mnemosyne 50.4 (1997) 436-76.
I had a lot of fun with making Ptolemy Philip's son in Dancing with the Lion, and did make sure he was young, but in my author's note at the end, I also state that it's almost certainly false.

Nano 2023 Day 3
in which the boy finally gets a name drop
When the boy’s expression did nothing to soften, the war god huffed and scrubbed a hand over his face.
“Look,” he said. “We got off on the wrong foot.” He stood and waved his arms in a generous if sloppy bow. “My name is Ares, son of Zeus. You got a name?”
An inhale.
That’s all it took for the answer to flash across his mind.
“Keraunos,” he replied, the name slotting effortlessly into place alongside every other truth about himself. It comforted him—having a word for what he was, something to define his edges, to mark him out against the world—even made him forget pain, the panic, the body on the ground.
“Weird name,” said Ares, pulling him from his thoughts.
Offended, Keraunos scowled. “No, it’s not.”
“Sure it is, Thunderbolt,” Ares replied. “I mean, it’d be like if I was named Sharp Stick.”
“Well, it’s my name,” he insisted. “And I like it.”
Ares shrugged. “Suit yourself. Still. I thought you’d be named something… Different, I guess.”
He cocked his head. “Why?”
The war god huffed, frustration leaking out of his voice and into his hands. “I dunno, you’re just—” He cut off and turned.
Keraunos watched Ares pace—his twitching hands, his bared teeth and half attempted sneer, and his wide steps, careful to mind the limbs of the sprawled, headless Hermes. Keraunos watched and then settled back against the rock, before grabbing a random pine cone and rolling it absently in his hands.
“I’m just…?” he prompted.
Ares kicked at the ground. “Nothing. Forget it. Besides, we gotta get you outta here.”
“Why?” asked the boy as Ares stepped close and held out his hand.
“Cuz I don’t wanna be around when Athena catches on,” he said, shaking his hand when Keraunos stared at it absently and then finally pulling him up with a sigh. The boy winced and coughed, stumbling a little while Ares led him away, back to the horses.

Keraunos (2023)
This is a project that I started back in 2020, when I came across a story in Greek mythology that didn’t technically happen. In the Greek poet Hesiod’s Theogony, or the Ancient Greek creation myth, he states that before Zeus was married to Hera, he was married to Metis, a daughter of one of the titans, but it was foretold by Gaia that their children would overthrow him; first a wise daughter, and then a son more powerful than Zeus to overthrow him. Zeus would not allow this to happen, so he subsumed Metis’s essence into his mind to act as his conscience.
However, Metis was pregnant with their first child at the time, so eventually one day Zeus gets a splitting headache and cracks open his skull, whereupon Athena, Goddess of war and wisdom, is born fully grown in full battle armor. Then…. Greek mythology just kind of happens? And the story about Zeus’s future usurper isn’t touched upon again. Well then, I thought “What if it did happen? What would that look like? What if this kid was born?” And there came the inception of Keraunos, the ragnarok of Greek Mythology (and no, I have not played the God of War video games).
This story examines and asks questions about the democratic process and the functions of a representative democracy, government, and why our society is the way it is. What is democracy? What is fascism? What is anti-fascism? What does justice mean? And also exploring how that can tie into bigger existential questions of systems of power, religion, and beliefs. This isn’t just a story of “The king is dead, long live the king,” but a story examining these systems of power that we’ve constructed and what our beliefs mean to us.
This is an initial concept of first chapter (pages 1-10) or prelude to the story, and two “highlight pages’“ for what’s to come in the future, featuring Keraunos’s “birth” or debut, and a double page spread of Keraunos visiting with Khaos, the embodiment of the universe and all creation. This is an entire semester’s worth of research and truly a labor of love. I will be sure to provide updates on this as soon as I am able to. You can check out @keraunos-graphic-novel for future developments. Until then, I hope you enjoy!
@comicaurora and once again thanks to Overly Sarcastic Productions for inspiring this entire venture. :)

unrelated news but i have begun a quest to categorize a bajillion different forms of phenomena that could exist in a setting with... phenomena. this isn't designed to be comprehensive, but moreso to give you ideas on abilities you hadn't considered before like uhhhh *rolls dice*
Neurothermy: The ability to control the temperature of neural tissues, such as warming or cooling the brain or nervous system to affect its functioning.
or...
Teleesthesia: The ability to perceive sensations or gather sensory information from a distance, like feeling textures or temperatures remotely.
comments are open so that other people can contribute prefixes and suffixes to the table. cheers. feel free to reblog this resource if it's useful for you. and you should read chum. which has a lot of fun superpowers.

Ptolemy II Philadelphus
Ptolemy II Philadelphus ("The Sibling Loving", r. 282-246 BCE) was the second ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. He consolidated the kingdom conquered by his father Ptolemy I and presided over its golden age. Ptolemy II invested heavily in Alexandria, overseeing the completion of the Library of Alexandria and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Ptolemy II ruled through a combination of hard and soft power, influencing some states through diplomacy while funneling resources toward wars against his rivals in Africa, Asia, and Greece. The Ptolemaic kingdom reached its furthest extent during his reign. These efforts were funded by economic policies that increased Egypt's agricultural and financial output. With his sister-wife Arsinoe II Philadelphus, he instituted a cultural and religious program that solidified the Ptolemaic Dynasty as Egypt's divine rulers.
Youth & Succession
Ptolemy II was born in Kos in 308 or 309 BCE to Ptolemy I and Berenice I of Egypt, his third wife. Ptolemy II had a full-blooded sister, Arsinoe II (l. c. 318/311 to c. 270/268 BCE), and several half-siblings, many of whom were destined to rule themselves. On his father's side, his half-brothers Ptolemy Keraunos (also spelled Ceraunus, r. 281-279 BCE) and Meleager (r. 279 BCE) were each briefly king of Macedon, and his half-sister Lysandra was queen consort to Alexander V of Macedon (r. 297-294 BCE). On his mother's side, his half-brother Magas (r. 276-250 BCE) was king of Cyrene, and his half-sister Antigone was queen consort to Pyrrhus (c. 319-272 BCE).
Shortly after his birth, Ptolemy II and the rest of his family relocated to Alexandria, Egypt's capital. As a youth, Ptolemy II was tutored by some of the brightest minds of Greek literature and Greek philosophy, including Philetas of Cos (c. 340 to c. 385 BCE), Zenodotus of Ephesus (c. 325-260 BCE) the first head of the Library of Alexandria, and Strato of Lampascus (c. 340/330-269 BCE), director of the Lyceum. This educational background contributed to his patronage of the Library of Alexandria later in life.
Ptolemy I decided to pass over Ptolemy Keraunos, his firstborn son by his previous wife Eurydike, so that Ptolemy II could become regent. This decision may have been motivated by Berenice, who naturally wanted her own son to rule. Ptolemy II became co-ruler with his father around 284 BCE. This decision was contested by prominent figures in the Alexandrian court like Demetrius of Phalerum (c. 350-280 BCE), who supported the claims of Ptolemy I's older sons by Eurydike.
Upon Ptolemy I's death in 282 BCE, Ptolemy II became ruler of Egypt, Cyrene, Coele-Syria, Phoenicia, and Cyprus. Ptolemy II immediately set about strengthening his claim by removing all those who refused to acknowledge his rule. He executed two of his half-brothers who attempted to usurp him or stir up rebellion. Demetrius of Phalerum was exiled to Upper Egypt, where he died. Over the course of his reign, Ptolemy II would face challenges from his other brothers. However, Ptolemy Keraunos ended up relinquishing his claim to the Egyptian throne after attaining the Kingdom of Macedon in 281 BCE.

Ceraunophile. Ceraun is from the Greek word Keraunos, meaning thunderbolt. So, a ceraunophile is a person who loves lightning and thunder

The electricity of the sky is awesome and invites cult. Places where lightning struck were very special and practically showed the god descending. In Arcadia we find fifth-century BC inscriptions dedicating a spot to Zeus Keraunos, ‘Zeus lightning’ or Zeus Storpaos, ‘Zeus of lightning’. Elsewhere you might find Zeus Astrapaios, or Keraunios (‘of lightning’, both), or Keraunobolos (‘lightning thrower’), or Kataibates, ‘descending’, or, at Gytheion (Laconia) Kappotas, ‘falling’. At Gytheion a stone was on display in the second century AD, which in our modern mythology we call a meteor.
