fun as all the various other quirks-in-ofa manifest first are, i am now musing on a "the first power to manifest is the vestiges" au where Izuku, still functionally quirkless, is in the middle of the entrance exam when he uhhh summons seven and half ghosts who were not prior to this fully aware and/or paying attention.
#Izuku: i need to help that girl-#En: OH MY GOD IM ALIVE???#Nana: is this UA? what on earth are they thinking-#Kudo: robot apocalypse....?#Shinomori: MOVE MOVE MOVE NOT THAT DIRECTION#Banjo: USE YOUR QUIRK#Izuku: I DONT HAVE ONE AND WHO ARE YOU#Bruce: oh god wait no its us. we're the quirk. kudo was actually riGHT ABOUT THIS STUPID-#Yoichi: (already pushing Izuku towards Uraraka pointing out the best piece of rubble to brace against or use to help)#hm. could be a fun mix. you get the vestiges and izuku having to quirkless hero run#all might believes him when he describes nana but no one has any clue whats going on#and only izuku can see the vestiges#soooooo good luck man

Fic Authors Self-Rec
in response to this tag game, my answers requested by @gamebird and @rosewind2007!:
“Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗”
Secondhand Boyfriend (Detroit: Become Human)- Markus/Gavin AU where Gavin owns an electronic antiques store. Markus is the secondhand android he gets to pretend to be his fake boyfriend at a Christmas party. It’s the most rom-com of my fics. I love it probably more than anything I’ve ever written <3
The Man from C.Y.B.E.R.L.I.F.E. (Detroit: Become Human)- the name says it all, a cross between DBH and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Markus/Connor. it was so fun to write the 60s spies-in-love vibe as a comedy, and I got to write 2 sequels!
The Corporate and the Construct (The Murderbot Diaries)- Beauty and the Beast Murderbot/Gurathin AU! Less fairy tale than you think. At time of posting was one of the longer TMD fics on AO3 and I don’t know how I feel about that. I've always wanted to write a 'robots take over the world' post-apocalypse thing. This one has gotten me to draw a whole ton just to illustrate it!
Old-Fashioned (Stargate SG-1)- the ultimate rare-pair, Jonas/Teal'c fic of which there were only like 3 at time of posting. Proud of this one just for managing to do so much in such a short fic. It makes me the most happy to get comments and kudos on!
I May Have Punched Him (Hamilton)- Burr/Hamilton coworkers to frenemies to friends to enemies to lovers fic. This one is domestic and silly and just makes me feel good.
I’m tagging:
@getoutofthewater @maeglinthebold @all-all0s-eyes @indigo-a-creeping @opalescent-potato

First Time Watches of 2023 (3/3)

SILENT NIGHT - The idea of a Christmas apocalypse film where everyone dies was immediately appealing to my mother and I because our family sucks. That Jojo Rabbit kid is fucking stellar, made me sob.

THE THING - practical effects 💖. Just such a solid film, again another tumblr recommendation I really wanted to tick off, the descent into distrust, the tension, the stakes, sexy Kurt Russell; yeah, 10/10.

LADYHAWKE - Everything about this was made for me except for that excruciatingly 80s score - get that sound outta here! Matthew Broderick is incredibly endearing as Phillipe “the mouse”, i absolutely adore him. The curse is brilliant - and hell, that scene with the transformation as they lie beside each other - MAN! I just wish that instead of telling us about the priest’s curse, and him summoning the devil or whatever, we’d been able to see it. Even if it had just been shadows on the wall, or a semi-animated sequence - would’ve added a little extra.

TREASURE PLANET - My friend Hannah had recommended this to me a decade ago and I’m very sorry it took a literal decade to get to it. The most I knew about Jim Hawkins was that people that made non/disney amvs back in the 2000s/2010s shipped him with Ariel, those Jelsa bitches don’t even know how bad it was. Anyway, this film was gorgeous, oh my god? And while I hate “I need a father figure” plots this one was well-written and genuinely moving. Great ensemble, tho the robot played by Martin Short feels unnecessarily jammed in.

THE LION IN WINTER - Numerous mutuals have posted about this; god, I’m so glad. This was another one I picked up a DVD of in my favourite antique place. KATHERINE HEPBURN. is everything. This whole thing was…insane…Shakespearean delivery for dialogue that is 90% fitting and then 10% bizarre. Timothy Dalton hot asf. Anthony Hopkins really using his eyes. All the Eleanor & Henry scenes are of course, absolute highlights - i love it when people just lie to each other, and between all of that, reveal their devastating truths - but what struck me most, and has stayed with me, is the three princes locked in the dark dungeon, reduced to little boys by the violent whims of their father & the schemes of their mother. a manipulator, a warrior, and, well, john, utterly powerless. Bizarre & entertaining.
THE BOY AND THE HERON - Saw this today, it was visually stunning; Mahito is a strong character and his VA is great; Mark Hamill delivers, but Christian Bale is wobbly, his accent fluctuating. The character of the Heron is a real highlight and wow, kudos to RPats. Love the world this film creates. Kiriko is my new fave ghibli woman. Dreamlike, mournful, fantastical, tugs on the heartstrings, enjoyable but actually made me appreciate Spirited Away more, which has never been one of my favourites but now I really wanna rewatch. Spoiler, btw, if you’re like that: when the tower started crumbling I started welling up because it just felt like a goodbye from Miyazaki, and I don’t even idolise him; it just really feels like his heart, and the heart of all the animators, was in this, and by god I appreciate that.
oh and a shout out to john wick 4, the peter cushing version of dracula, puss in boots the last wish & spiderverse 2, which were all pretty great! I have had a great time with movies this year.
#films#folly’s follies#yeah i copy pasted a couple of my letterboxed reviews thru out this#anyway! that’s my uh top 16 films of 2023 lol

TUA fics that deserve more attention
The Umbrella Academy fics under 200 kudos that are REALLY GOOD
I did this before in the BNHA fandom (with a limit of 500 kudos because it’s a much bigger fandom) and I’d thought I’d do it for TUA, too. So many fics get overlooked because of how few kudos they have.
To be on this list a fic must fulfill two requirements: be 200 kudos or less (as of me posting this), and be one month old or older.
Violent deaths create the worst ghosts by beebot
Warning: gore and violence, Dark!Ben
Horror, canon divergence - Unlike in canon, Ben is not different from other ghosts. He is angry and focused on the injustice of his death and desires revenge on Reginald. He takes his feelings out on Klaus.
There are two fics in this series, both of which are under 200 kudos. It’s a bit dark, which I think scared some people off it, but very good. The series is complete.
Not a Replacement, Never a Replacement by AndThenHeGotKnockedUp
Pacific Rim fusion - Klaus is a former Jaeger pilot who hasn’t been back in the cockpit since his partner Ben died mid-drift. But the Kaiju attacks are getting worse and worse, so Luther drags him back to the shatterdome because they need all the pilots they can get. Mostly Ben and Klaus brotherly relationship with pre-Klave.
Honestly, I don’t know why this fic has so few kudos. The fusion between TUA universe and the Pacific Rim universe was well done. You don’t need to have seen PacRim at all to understand this. All you need to know is: giant monsters called Kaiju come out of the ocean, and two people must merge their minds together to pilot giant robots to fight the Kaiju.
doppler effect by galaxyowl
Power swap and role reversal - Each of the Hargreeve’s siblings were born with a different power, and this changes everything and nothing. Someone still time travels to the future and comes back to stop the apocalypse, one Hargreeves sibling still dies as a teenager, and Vanya is still the cause of the apocalypse. Just who does what and how is shuffled around.
Told in a non-linear fashion.
as constant as a northern star by katplanet
Warnings: WIP, E-rated (no porn yet but knowing Kat it is coming)
Vampire AU - Takes place in a world where vampires are real and widely known. The story covers vampire Klaus traveling back in time to fight in a (fictional) war and meeting Dave. Klave.
I’m bending the rules a little bit since this is not quite a month old yet. Seeing as it is sitting at 33 kudos as of me writing this, I doubt that it is going to go over 200 kudos in the next four days. Truly excellent worldbuilding.
Together We’ll Be, Forever You’ll See by OverlyObsessed223
Warnings: WIP
Canon divergence - The Handler kidnaps Klaus from the mausoleum as a child and raises him herself alongside Lila. She is far better at this raising child soldiers thing than Reginald is.
I bent the rules with this one, too. The first installment is just over 200 kudos. I’m still reccing this because of its interesting, well executed premise. Can’t wait to see more.
Truth to Be Told by Scarlet_Nin
Canon divergence - Reginald figures out that Klaus can see Ben’s ghost after Ben’s death, no matter how Klaus denies it.
Another bending of the rules, this is also slightly over 200 kudos. It’s also the first in a series, and while the oneshot itself is complete, the series is not.

Ltleflrt’s Writing Year in Review
Once again I felt like I could do more this year, so this is the theme for the decade. But I got SO MUCH DONE too! And more than I did last year, so I’m happy to see an improvement :D
Total 2019 Word Count: 215,491 Total 2019 Kudos: 7,581 Total 2019 Hits: 63,620
My 2019 Fics:
Dreaming in Digital: 173,818 words (44,142 from 2019)
When Dean finds a deactivated sex bot, he knows it’s his lucky day.
Set in a Cyberpunk world where global warming and climate change has driven most of the human population into domed cities, Sam and Dean hunt rogue tech and science experiments gone wrong in the shadows, protecting the lives of those the government doesn't care about anymore. On a trip to the dump to scavenge for valuables Dean finds Castiel, an Angel Industries sex bot, which is worth his weight in credits. But when he turns the sex bot on, he learns that Castiel is sentient.
Artificial Intelligence is illegal, and for good reason, but Cas doesn't put off dangerous vibes. That doesn't stop Sam from researching his creators while Dean's off making friends with the android. If there's someone out there creating a robot army unconstrained by the 3 rules of robotics, Sam's going to make sure the operation is shut down for good.
Castiel just wants to exist. He wants to read and work in the Winchester's greenhouse and have movie nights with Dean. But he also wants to understand. Himself. His unexpected reaction to Dean. What it it means to feel.
I started this fic in February 2018, and finished it in April 2019. As of this post, it is the longest thing I’ve ever written. And definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever written. You know that saying about blood, sweat, and tears? So true. (the blood was from a cat scratch when Kitty Cas tried to jump in my lap while I was writing and I got clawed, but it counts!) I am proud of the results, even if I got tired of it and cut out a bunch of stuff I wanted to do. 2020 goal is some timestamps!
Where The Heart Lives: 12,876 words
Home is where the heart is, but it's nice to have a cozy little love nest too.
A collection of related short ficlets without a plot. Just small glimpses of Dean and Castiel being happy and in love.
This was a 30 day art challenge called Cottagetober, that I turned into writing prompts and added a 31st day since it was an October thing and I wanted a ficlet for every day. Writing these fluffy snippets every day made me very happy, and I think I might do something similar in 2020 if I can find a list that sparks joy.
Reunited: 2,681 words
Castiel has changed a lot in the 10 years since he was a shy bookworm in High School. But it seems like few of his previous schoolmates have grown up much, if the revival of the rumor mill as soon as he walked in is any indication.
Dean Winchester certainly grew up, though. And he seems far more interested in Castiel than the rumors.
Written as a prompt from @melilovesmakeup-blog, this little fic spawned much joy, and inspired a prequel from @bendingsignpost, which is honestly so dang flattering. I love this little universe, and I’m heckin’ glad I randomly decided to take prompts.
Cloud Nine: 2,254 words
“Hey, angel.” Dean’s voice is warm with love and pride, and it makes Castiel squirm in his bindings. “You think you can take more?”
I love finding new ways to write non-traditional a/b/o! One day I was driving around, and thought you know what I need? Dom!Omega!Dean and sub!Alpha!Cas. Not a lot of it out there yet, so had to write it myself. And I really want to revisit this and write a prequel. I Have Ideas!
The Git (you) Up: 1,323 words
Dean's been crushing on his new neighbor across the street from afar. When he gets an invitation to a neighborhood BBQ, he's finally going to meet the hottie. Now if only he can get the courage to talk to him.
I saw a ridiculously cute video on the internet and I was inspired!
Burning For You: 1,998 words
Due to their busy schedules, Sam and Eileen hire a wedding planner. As Best Man, Dean steps in to help as much as he can. The fact that Castiel is gorgeous and immune to the dangers of Dean's touch is a bonus.
Another prompt! I do prompts like never, but I’m so glad I did and got this one. I had an immediate, and visceral need to write this fic as soon as I saw the ask, so thank you very much @alessariel! This prompt was for both of us! :D
To Build A Bower: 633 words
Dean decorates his home to attract a mate.
Look. Look. I just really fuckin’ love bower birds okay? Okay. Thanks for the prompt @zarauthforsaken!
Special Delivery: 2,012 words
Castiel accidentally gets a package meant for his sexy neighbor.
Another prompt! From @queenandthree <3
Fun story about this fic, the premise was originally going to be used in Satin and Sawdust, but got discarded. I’m thrilled I found a reason to use it in a short story!
Work Life Balance: 2,227 words
As leader of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, one of Dean's duties is to balance Order with Entropy, and enforce the will of the Fates. When Castiel's nature as the demigod of War urges him to destroy more than he should, he seeks out Dean's council.
A prompt from @kazshero! I have had Four Horsemen headcanons for years, and could never come up with a story for it until I got this prompt. Super grateful for it! Death!Dean is my jam :D
The Menagerie: 1,452 words
Baby the Pegasus is giving birth to her first foal. Dean and Castiel are there to help her through it.
A prompt fill for @nickelkeep! An excuse to turn Baby into a pegasus! FLUFF! <3
A Trip To The Beach: 734 words
Camp Counselors Dean and Cas take the kids on a field trip to the beach.
Yes, this was definitely based on a conversation I had with @jupiterjames. When I got the prompt from my bestie, I *had* to make it about us lol
Quoth the... Wait that's not a Raven: 930 words
Dean, Castiel, and Sam are paranormal investigators. Tonight's haunted spot is a Pet Store.
A prompt from @purgatory-jar! And to be honest, I may revisit this idea with something longer someday. Writing TFW as paranormal investigators is too much fun to pass up :D
Hunter's Caress: 142,229 words (WIP)
Castiel Jameson won't rest until the outlaw who murdered his brother faces justice, and Dean Winchester is the only man alive who can help him track the villain down. Some say Winchester is a cold-blooded killer himself; others say he'd been wronged his whole life. All Castiel knows is that the desire glinting in Dean's green eyes is even more dangerous than he is. Castiel fights to keep his mind on business, but during the long nights on the trail with the dangerously handsome hunter he finds himself dreaming of yielding to Dean's illicit kisses and losing himself in lawless passion.
Dean Winchester is about to hang when Castiel saves his neck with his crazy plan. But dying might be better than spending day and night playing nursemaid to such an infuriating city slicker. He appreciates the stubborn detective's desire for justice, but he'd appreciate Cas a lot more if he'd stop being a lawman long enough to just be a man. He certainly has all the right equipment. Dean aches to run his fingers through Castiel's dark hair, yearns to know how Castiel's golden skin will feel against him. And before the coming of the next dawn, Dean vows to teach him the pleasures and sweet rewards of a Hunter's Caress.
I’ve had this idea since the first year I started writing Destiel fic, and it’s been sitting in my WIP folder since 2014. I don’t want to be done writing Destiel, but I’ve been struggling with my writing for about 2 years now, and I’m afraid it will only get worse when the show ends and the fandom starts to slow down without new content. I figure if I don’t do this story now, it’ll never get done. And that’s unacceptable, because this has been on my mind for far too long to let it never see the light of day. Of all of my stories, this one is the most For Myself thing I’ve ever written. And based on the way it’s going, it’s probably going to overtake Dreaming in Digital as my longest fic by the time it’s done lol

how to get email alerts when a new work appears in a search results page on AO3
Everybody asks for RSS feeds for specific tags, but this is so much better.
First, you have to know your AO3-fu. Go to AO3′s Search Works page and click on every “?” next to the field titles to learn your operators. The operators for the “Any Field” field is super important when it comes to custom-building a search results page full of your favorite tags, ships, etc, and with all the filters you need. 😃
Once you read a bit about the operators, it becomes clear that AO3 has given us the opportunity to search for extremely different fics all at once. So here’s one of my favorite elaborate searches on AO3 called “Sam Winchester AUs”: anything in English, complete, over 10k words, with Sam Winchester as a character, and anywhere in the fic’s description (so go back up to the top and find the “Any Field” field), there’s an instance of the word: Android or Robot or Fairy or Fae or Seelie or Unseelie or Planet or Universe or Dragon or Dinosaurs or Zombie or Undead or Post-apocalypse or Dystopia or Eldritch or A/B/O or Agent or Officer or Psychic or Amnesia. This makes it so I’m getting very specific Sam Winchester AUs that I totally love 🤗
Be sure to sort by ‘date updated’ & ‘descending’ sort direction so anything new on the first search results page will be newly updated/completed fics you’ve never read.
For further tweaking, on how to filter ships using the works search page visit this tutorial by @filter-me-ao3. Let’s say I wanted to filter out wincest in this giant search, I’d write “ -filter_ids:35" into the "Any Field" field. You can also write “-dubcon” and whatever other tags you want filtered out of the results page. So in the "Any Field" field, it’d look like this: -filter_ids:35 -dubcon Android* || Robot* || etc.
So that elaborate and amazing works search results page looks like this.
With all that done, now the good stuff: I don’t want to have to create or manually check this search ever again. I just want to get email updates whenever a new fic appears in these search results.
Enter ChangeTower. A service that monitors websites for content changes over time. With a free account you can track a maximum of 3 work search pages.
After a couple weeks of trying this out, I’m loving it.
When there’s a change to that search results page, I get notified by email. The email format title reads, “[New Change Detected] Sam Winchester AUs.” The email content looks like this when there’s a new story (green highlight means it’s all new content, ie: the story’s details):
Those are different search parameters, lol, but you get the idea. It gives you all the details of the fic in the email! It’s great! At the bottom of the email, it gives you the handy links to “View All Changes”, “Visit Page” (your AO3 search page, so you can click on that and click the fic and hit mark for later’ if you’re so inclined), and “Edit Monitor.”
IT’S NEAT AF!
“As succinctly as possible, tell me what I need to know to set this up.”
1. Design your AO3 search parameters wisely. You can make as many URLs to track as you want but ChangeTower will only allow you to run 3 at a time (for free accounts; you can track a lot more URLs if you want to pay).
2. Sign up for a free account. Once signed in, you should be at app.changetower.com/monitors.
3. Click “new monitor” --> “content monitor” (I’ve tried other ones; content monitor seems the best imo) --> “single URL.” Paste your AO3 search results URL in there. When you do, the full page screenshot of the URL will be AO3′s cookies notice. Don’t worry about it though bc if you scroll down you’ll see the search page content is all there. Click “continue.”
4. After experimenting, my recommendation is to make it notify you when 5% of the page has changed. Any lower and you’ll get notified of changed kudos & comments numbers of already-existing fanworks on that page.
And the rest is gravy! Name your monitor, suggest the frequency it checks your URL (I have mine set to every 12 hours), etc. and click “Save.” UPDATE: Don’t run 3 monitors every 12 hours because free changetower accounts only get 180 checks a month. You’ll run out of them early if you do set them to every 12hrs. UPDATE: you may also be able to do the same thing using https://distill.io/
Congratulations, you’ll now get emailed any time a new fic enters your search results page! 🍷📚🛀❤️

Conversation
Wei watches The Umbrella Academy Ep 9
Vanya throws each and every single nanny to their death.
Wei: It took an unkillable robot for Vanya to eat her damn oatmeal? No wonder she's a mess. Also wtf Hargreeves, you just let her keep killing nannies until she went through too many?
------
Leonard: You were defending yourself. But that's not how they'll see it.
Vanya: No no... I'll... I'll explain it to them.
Wei: Kudos to Ellen Page for her acting in this scene. Distant yet distraught. Emotional but dying. Trying to reason with herself... Wonderful.
------
Leonard continues his emotional manipulation.
Wei: I hate you so much.
------
Ben: I like the sober you.
Klaus: Yeah well sobriety is over rated.
Ben: Look where it's gotten you though!
Klaus: Where has it gotten me? Where has it gotten me? I still can't talk to the person I love! No one takes me seriously! I want to be numb again!
Wei: My poor Klaus!
------
Klaus: You just Patrick Swayze'd me. How did you do that?
Ben: I didn't... You did! I think.
------
Vanya finds RH's journal.
Wei: FINALLY SOME PLOT DEVELOPMENT.
Leonard: Vanya I can explain.
Vanya: You've been manipulating me all this time?!
Wei: A bit late, but you got this.
------
Leonard: You think the First Chair went missing all by herself?
Wei: Oh, normally I'd be upset about a character's hubris coming out like this but... If it kills you faster, I'm game.
------
Klaus: I've seen that look in your eyes before. The look of someone who is looking for their next high.
Wei: Oh shit.
------
Allison writes "Vanya" and "Powers."
Luther: I don't understand
Wei: Well hurry your bitch ass brain up.
------
Luther: I can see that, Vanya.
Vanya: L-Luther s-stop.
Wei: Oh no. Luther, you dumbass bitch.
------
Luther: If what Pogo told me is even half true, then she's a danger to us too.
Luther proceeds to be a dumbass.
Wei: Why didn't they kill you instead. You cause the apocalypse you dumb ape.
------
Luther: Look, Allison please. I had to do it.
Wei: YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DO SHIT YOU ASSHOLE.
------
Number Five: Isn't nice to be back next to your friends?
Wei: Oh don't let go of her yet Five. At least you were happy!
------
Young Vanya: They're still afraid of us. Even after all these years, afraid of our power.
...
Young Vanya: Never in the limelight, never the center of attention. They're just like dad.
...
Young Vanya: Embrace who you are. Who we've been all along.
Wei: Oh so this is how she snaps. Luther was still a dumbass.
------
Luther: Oh my god.
Wei: WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN? YOU ARE A SHIT BROTHER AND A SHIT PERSON WHO JUST WANTS TO FUCK YOUR ADOPTED SISTER.

[ marvel au ]
“Kaito’s not joinin’ us today,” Kazuha declares, striding into the makeshift command centre. “Not unless it’s literally the apocalypse, end quote.”
Heiji looks up from where he’s poring over a map with Kudo, trying to figure out the best place to attack from. “Why not? Thought we agreed all hands on deck for this one?”
“Fish aliens,” she doesn’t-explain-at-all with a wince, to a mass of huhs around the room, three in understanding and the rest in confusion.
Miyano shrugs – insofar as the robot suit can shrug – when they all look at her. “What? I make a habit of reading all of our SHIELD files.”
“Critical mission intel,” adds Kudo’s neechan, and catches the collapsible set of bow and arrows that Kazuha tosses to her with her metal arm (and without looking).
Dear me, classified information, finishes Koizumi not quite aloud, along with the general mental image of a hair toss.
(“Who needs aliens when you have friends like these,” Heiji grumbles under his breath.
Kudo pokes him in the side with supersoldier strength.)

First off, ya got yourself a great comic there. Lots o work put into it and I gotta respect that. Kudos friendo! Secondly, how do you go about writing your story creatively? Do situations come to you panel by panel or do you have the whole thing thought out?
Hey , thanks dude! I dunno much about putting a story together but I’ll tell ya what I got so far.
I wrote the shitty first draft for Bicycle Boy for National Novel Writing Month in 2010. I wanted to write a story about a cyborg exploring the post-apocalypse landscape on a bicycle, so I did! It was really, really bad, but I took that draft and reworked/added to it a lot. The current iteration of the story resembles the first draft a little, but its SO much more now. Mostly it’s longer and more complicated >_<. The original draft was about 1/4 of the length of the current version.
As for being creative... I dunno, it’s good to experience life and watch stuff or read stories that you think are cool! My story is so much of me taking pieces of inspiration from things that I love and turning them into something new. Things like Jak & Daxter, Borderlands, Unsounded, Mad Max, No Country for Old Men, American Psycho, I-Robot, and 1984--to name a few. I also take a lot from the things I’ve done, feelings I’ve felt, & people I’ve met in my life.
So! I have the whole story plotted out, but I still work on it all the time. The general arc of the story stays the same (more or less) but I like to go in and tweak the scenes therein.
I tried to write stories panel-to-panel when I was younger, but it never worked out. My advice would be that spinning a plot on the spot can work well for short stories, but if you want to write a longform story like Bicycle Boy, you gotta plot it out start to finish and give yourself a solid outline, at LEAST. Figure out all the major events and character arcs, and go from there.

Top 30 to Look Forward to at GenCon 2019 (#21-30)
Here’s the continuation of the Top 30 with a look at #21-30, the end of the list.
Dungeon Academy - Have I mentioned lately how much I like games that play under an hour? This looks like a roll & write game published by Matagot and created by Julian Allain. It’s for 1-6 players and takes 20 min. to play. In the game, you roll dice and draw lines to chart your path from start to the dungeon, defeating monsters along the way. It looks like a fun implementation of a dungeon crawl.
City of the Big Shoulders - Published by Parallel Games and designed by Raymond Chandler III, this is a heavier game that supports 2-4 players and takes 2-3 hours to play. In this game, players work to build up the city of Chicago. It’s apparently a marriage of an 18xx style (ie. HEAVY) game of stock manipulation with the easy rules of a Euro-style game. Throughout the course of the game, players will run companies, trade stock shares, and produce/sell goods in order to become rich capitalists of industry.
Black Angel - Designed by Sébastien Dujardin, Xavier Georges, and Alain Orban and published by Pearl Games, this game for 1-4 players takes 1-2 hours to play. This is probably one of the biggest games to watch at the convention. This game is apparently a reimplementation of the popular board game, Troyes, but with a space theme. Honestly, that description should be reason enough for me to NOT be interested. However, I can’t help but be drawn into the theme. The game is described as existing in a post-apocalyptic world. Like in the Disney animated film, Wall-E, Earth’s resources have been depleted and humanity’s only hope is to board the ship, Black Angel, and seek life elsewhere. Different factions fight over who gets to control the ship and dictate the use of resources. The game has an interesting premise--exciting enough to pull me in, despite my hesitancy about gameplay mechanisms. I’ve played Troyes before, and I didn’t like the gameplay.
Undo: Blood in the Gutter - Designed by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach and published by Pegasus Spiele, this game supports 2-6 players in 45-90 min. I’m very excited about this one! It’s a cooperative game that involves storytelling and a murder mystery! Jump back in time to stop someone’s death, Quantum Leap style. From reading about this game, I get the impression that it’s a cross between Unlock! (escape room in a box) and Time Stories (escape room in a box before the Unlock! and Exit series came out, but with a sort of clunky time-loop, replay the same scenario over and over game mechanism instead of pure exploration). If the story is strong, then I think this game will be successful in adding a new twist to the popular escape-room-in-a-box genre.
Quirky Circuits- Designed by Nikki Valens and published by Plaid Hat Games, this quick playing game takes 15-30 min. for 2-4 players. The art on the box cover is irresistibly cute! Hats off to the artist, Danalyn Reyes. I should really be giving more kudos to board game artists, but this one in particular caught my eye because of the cute animals and robots. This is a cooperative game, my favorite type! Players simultaneously select programmable actions to set the course of their quirky robot in hopes it will complete its task before its battery runs out. I guess they should’ve invested in some Energizer batteries for that robot. The designer, Nikki Valens, is known for formerly working at Fantasy Flight Games on big projects like Mansions of Madness 2nd ed, Arkham Horror, Eldritch Horror, and Legacy of Dragonholt. While I would love to see another storytelling game from Nikki, this game piques my interest. Plaid Hat Games is well known for publishing games set in the zombie apocalypse, Dead of Winter, as well as the Evolution series of games. Considering the pedigree of both the designer and publisher, I expect great things.
Century Golem: Eastern Mountains- I didn’t think Plan B Games would actually create and publish this golem-themed sequel to Century: Golem edition (aka the golem version of Emerson Matsuuchi’s smash hit, Century: Spice Road). I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!! They said they weren’t going to do it, and I fell for it, hook, line, and sinker. The artists for this one are Atha Kanaani and Chris Quilliams; Chris was also one of the artists of the original Century: Golem game. The art makes all the difference of this easy to play, easy to like goods conversion game. I might have to shell out extra money for the playmat, too. I just can’t get over how great the art is in this game! It’s also an easy game to teach to people who are new to boardgaming.
Wingspan - New designer Elizabeth Hargrave has created one of the most talked about games this year, which is surprising to me, given that this is a game about birds. Yes, you heard that right, this game is for the birds! Wingspan supports 1-5 players and takes 40-70 min. to play. Published by Stonemaier games, the game probably had some built-in trust that the game would be good. Stonemaier has been known to publish fun games with quality components. I can’t decide if it’s the tiny eggs that look like candy or the birdhouse that dispenses the dice that makes this game eye-catching. I like that this game has card drafting. I’m eager to play this one, myself!
Colors of Paris - Another newbie designer, Nicolas De Oliveira, has created this game about creating great works of art. The publisher is Super Meeple, and the game supports 2-4 players in 45-60 min. This game appears to feature a rondel mechanism. I think I’m generally pulled in by games about art, even though I fear Fresco might just be the best of them all. We’ll have to see what Colors of Paris brings to the table.
Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done - Created by Seth Jaffee and published by Tasty Minstrel Games, this game supports 2-4 players and plays in 40-60 min. This game uses both rondel and mancala mechanisms. As is to be expected from Tasty Minstrel, the wooden tokens are custom shaped pieces that look like knights, castles, and other buildings. There are also variable player powers in this game, which I’m not always a fan of because I think some player powers are more intuitive to employ than others, making gameplay feel uneven. At least, that has been my experience with variable powers in other games; it’s THE reason my gaming partner doesn’t like The Voyages of Marco Polo, and to this day I regret playing with the suggested player powers for a first game (she got whatever power is prescribed for third place, and the first player’s power was overwhelmingly strong). I’m intrigued to find out how the mancala and rondel interact with each other in this game.
Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale - Produced by Thunderworks and designed by Jordy Adan, this is yet another roll & write game that takes 30-45 min. and supports 1+ players. Like any good roll & write, the player count is really only limited by the number of papers/pencils you have. This game takes place in the Roll Player universe. Instead of rolling up the stats of a player character, this time you’re a map maker charting out distant lands for the queen.
That's a wrap on my Top 30 from GenCon. Stay tuned for my upcoming list on Essen Spiel, the biggest boardgaming convention in the world! This year’s Essen Spiel is from Oct. 24th-27th, so I need to get my preview list together quickly.

how to get email alerts when a new work appears in a search results page on AO3
The email format title reads, “[New Change Detected] Sam Winchester AUs.” The email content looks like this when there’s a new story (green highlight means it’s all new content, ie: the story’s details): x
Those are different search parameters, lol, but you get the idea. It gives you all the details of the fic in the email! It’s great! At the bottom of the email, it gives you the handy links to “View All Changes”, “Visit Page” (your AO3 search page, so you can click on that and click the fic and hit ‘mark for later’ if you’re so inclined), and “Edit Monitor.”
IT’S NEAT AF!
“As succinctly as possible, tell me what I need to know to set this up.”
Design your AO3 search parameters wisely. You can make as many URLs to track as you want but ChangeTower will only allow you to run 3 at a time (for free accounts; you can track a lot more URLs if you want to pay).
Sign up for a free account. Once signed in, you should be at app.changetower.com/monitors.
After experimenting, my recommendation is to make it notify you when 5% of the page has changed. Any lower and you’ll get notified of changed kudos & comments numbers of already-existing fanworks on that page.
And the rest is gravy! Name your monitor, suggest the frequency it checks your URL (I have mine set to every 12 hours), etc. and click “Save.”
Congratulations, you’ll now get emailed any time a new fic enters your search results page! 🍷📚🛀❤️

Men of Steel: 15 Superheroes That Are Metal AF
As we all know, there’s no such thing as the average superhero. They come in a whole range of shapes, sizes and skill sets. But if there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to make the super-powered even more super, it’s a healthy dose of good old-fashioned METAL.
RELATED: Straight Fire: The Hottest Heroes in Comics
After all, who wants to wear lurid-colored spandex and fight with their bare hands when they could be rocking a flying armored suit, a prosthetic gun-arm, or wielding adamantium claws the size of their face? Luckily for us, there are quite a few metal dudes out there who know the correlation between metal and mettle. That’s why CBR has put together a list of the most metal superheroes ever put to paper… cue epic guitar solo!
IRON MAN
Let’s be honest, what makes Iron Man so “metal” is his super-powered exoskeleton, so really it’s the armor that deserves all the attention in this entry (although he did build it, so kudos is still in order!). However, the appearance and on-board functions of Iron Man’s suit differ from comic to comic, as Stark often undertakes modifications or designs specialized for specific purposes, so it’s hard to talk about as a single entity.
Still, pretty much every reincarnation of Stark’s armor shares some characteristics with Don Heck and Jack Kirby’s original 1963 design: it gives Iron Man enhanced strength and protects him from attack using a forcefield, enables him to fly at great speed, and comes equipped with an impressive on-board weapons system, communication tools and sensors. All this makes Iron Man a certifiable metal badass, whatever version of the suit he’s wearing!
CBR reckons James Rhodes (War Machine/Iron Patriot) deserves an honorable mention here also, as he uses similar technology to fight and fly, and has worn the Iron Man armor on several occasions, like when Stark relapsed into alcoholism in “Iron Man” #170 and supposedly died in “Iron Man” #284. Keep it heavy, Rhodey!
WOLVERINE
As everyone already knows by now — and if not, where exactly have you been for the last 40 years — Wolverine was chosen as a candidate for the Weapon X project because of his mutant healing factor, but that’s not really a contest anyone would want to win. The prize was having his entire skeleton fused with unbreakable adamantium, turning him into a barbaric killing machine… and, eventually, a hero.
Of course, back in 1993, Wolvie had the adamantium ripped out of him by Magneto in the “Fatal Attractions” crossover event. Unbeknownst to Logan, or anyone else, he had bone claws beneath… which is still pretty damn metal, honestly. A few years later, in “Wolverine” #145, it was revealed that none other than Apocalypse replaced that adamantium to make a brainwashed Wolverine more dangerous again.
Metal bones or not, Logan was still killable, and eventually died in the “Death of Wolverine” arc (beginning in “Wolverine” Vol.5 #5), ironically being suffocated in a coating of adamantium. His legacy lives on in the form of his clone, X-23, who kicks serious amounts of ass, despite having her claws in all the wrong places. The king is dead, long live the queen!
MERCURY
Okay, so Cessily Kincaid might be one of the newer kids on the block (having first appeared in “New Mutants” Vol.2 #2 in August 2003), but she’s already proven she can hold her own in a fight and deserves her place among the metal heavyweights. If you’re not convinced, bear in mind she was part of the Hellions Squad while at Xavier’s Institute, a title which just screams “metal!”
As her name suggests, Mercury’s body is composed of a highly pliable non-toxic metal, which she can reshape or solidify at will. Thanks to the molecular cohesion power of her metallic DNA, she can cling to solid surfaces and move her body without external propulsion. Cooler still, in “New X-Men: Childhood’s End” #1, she demonstrated that having her hands cut off is really no biggie… it just helps her “lose a few pounds.”
She’s had a troubled life and probably wished she’d been stripped off her powers by Scarlet Witch during the 2005 “Decimation” crossover event, but CBR is glad that Marvel allowed her to retain her mutant skill and continue kicking X amounts of ass.
ARCHANGEL
Warren Kenneth Worthington III is quite literally a dark angel… well, okay, he’s a morally-questionable mutant born with wings, but that’s just semantics. What makes Archangel so “metal,” isn’t just his disposition, but the steam-punky techno-organic wings he acquired after the feathery ones he was born with were damaged and eventually ripped off by one of his foes. Worthington reappeared soon after this accident, though, bigger and more kickass than ever in “X-Factor” #24, complete with a brand-new look thanks, not for the first time in this list, to Apocalypse making him his new horseman, Death.
This revamp gave him increased powers, including the ability to shoot blades from his wings with tips coated in a potent neurotoxin to paralyze his enemies. Later, he develops a “bloodthirsty subconscious” that drives his wings to act of their own accord on occasion, as confirmed in “Uncanny X-Men” #293. If that doesn’t have you convinced, then how about the fact that he tried to destroy humanity by way of apocalypse in the “Dark Angel Saga”? Any being that powerful deserves a mention on this list of the greatest metal heroes.
JOCASTA
Jocasta is basically the metallic equivalent of Frankenstein’s Bride. Designed by the evil Ultron to be his mate (sex doll alert!), but rebelling against her maker to fight for the good guys, she’s since become an honorary member of the Avengers and part of the staff faculty team at their Academy. So why is Jocasta so “metal”? Well, apart from the obvious — y’know, having a body composed of titanium — she’s blessed with superhuman strength, speed, stamina, reflexes and intelligence, and can withstand most physical or energy-based attacks.
She’s also immune to disease, doesn’t need food, water or oxygen, and can easily survive in the vacuum of space. We’ve also saved the best for last… she can shoot electromagnetic energy beams from her eyes! CBR doesn’t really want to know what Ultron had in mind when he gave her the power to do that! She’s not without her quirks, though. In “Marvel Zombies” Vol.5 #4, she turns humankind into a bunch of flesh-eating monsters to prevent them getting robotic upgrades and endangering her status as their mechanical overlord. Yikes! Maybe she’s a little too “metal”…
STEEL
John Henry Irons, otherwise known as Steel, first appeared in “The Adventures of Superman” #500 in 1993 as a relatively normal man with a super-powered robotic suit. Named after an African-American folk hero, Irons may have been a normal man before his metal upgrade, but his will was always ironclad. Working in construction during the “Death of Superman,” Irons tried to help Supes against Doomsday using only a sledgehammer before he was covered in tons of rubble. He then designed his famous suit, to honor the original Man of Steel.
That all changed when Lex Luthor tampered with his DNA as part of the Everyman Project, transforming him into a being entirely composed of stainless steel. This made him incredibly strong and durable, and also for some reason gave him the power to liquefy metal by producing intense levels of heat (weird, but useful). Steel could even turn himself into a super-powered puddle if he wanted to, although why he’d want to is another question entirely. Unfortunately for Irons these powers weren’t to last, as his metal outer coating gradually peeled off to reveal human skin beneath. Even so, he remains as steely as ever, always ready to join the fight if he’s needed.
THE METAL MEN
The Metal Men are a group of super-powered robots that debuted in “Showcase” #37 back in the Silver Age. Don’t let their fun look fool you: they’re a powerful bunch of odd-bolts. Each robot was designed by mad scientist Dr. Will Magnus with powers and personalities to emulate their namesake metals.
The team’s leader, Gold, can soften and stretch his body to immense proportions, and his female counterpart Platinum can flatten herself out so she’s incredibly thin (because apparently that’s all girls care about, according to creator Robert Kanigher). As the resident hot-head, Mercury can melt down and liquefy, whereas Iron is the strong, steadfast type. Lead’s a bit thick — geddit? — but can repel radiation by morphing into a shield. And Tin just sort of holds things and spins around a lot. But hey, no team’s perfect!
As part of a 1993-1994 retcon in “Metal Men” Vol.2 #1-4, Dr. Magnus got a metal upgrade after being fatally wounded, becoming the team’s new leader after Gold’s death and assuming the identity Veridium. They’ve only had a minimal impact during the “New 52” reboot, but these loveable metal heroes are sure to return soon.
COMMANDER STEEL
There’ve been three incarnations of Commander Steel (otherwise known as Citizen or Captain Steel) since the metal-clad hero first appeared in “Steel, The Indestructible Man” #1 back in 1978. Interestingly, each Steel hails from the same family. Now there’s some good genes! The first was a WWII hero that took on Nazis, but it’s his super-powered grandsons that intrigue CBR most of all, at least for the purposes of this list.
Both wield superhuman strength and wear metallic bodysuits, allowing them to withstand devastating blows from a powerful opponent without leaving a scratch. However, this power does have its challenges — being able to put things down properly, for instance, and leaving cracks in pavements because the suit’s so heavy (a small price to pay!). In “Justice Society of America” #15, it was explained that the suit actually keeps Steel’s abilities in check. So, the more naked he gets, the more powerful he becomes? That’s“metal” enough for us!
VISION
Just to clarify: when we say Vision, we’re not talking about the original, green-skinned alien dreamed up by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in the 1940s. Ohhh, no. After Stan Lee and Roy Thomas decided to make Vision a super-powered synthezoid in “The Avengers” #57, this particular hero got a helluva lot more “metal.” Vibranium metal, to be precise… at least in the MCU.
Like Jocasta, Vision was originally created by Ultron, but unlike her, he was designed as a straight-up death machine with enough firepower to take on the Avengers single-handed. So, what can he do? It might be easier to describe what he can’t do. As a walking, talking supercomputer, Vision is gifted with superior intelligence and the ability to take control of any technology he chooses, including the world’s nuclear weapons systems. He can also alter his density and mass, going from a floaty ghost to impenetrable fortress-man in seconds. He is, without question, one of the most powerful Avengers of all time, and definitely metal AF.
SILVER SURFER
The Silver Surfer is a super-powered humanoid covered in an otherworldly metallic coating who rides through the galaxy on a shiny cosmic surfboard heralding the apocalypse. Of course he’s going to be on this list! Thanks to his ability to wield the Power Cosmic, his power range is insane: his surfboard allows him to journey through interstellar space, move through time, and even take others along for the ride (as seen in “The Silver Surfer” #6). On top of that, he can convert matter into energy, meaning he doesn’t need food, water, air or sleep and can survive anywhere, even within a black hole. Oh, and did we mention he can produce cosmic bolts powerful enough to destroy a planet? Heroes don’t come much more “metal” than this!
The Surfer has proven himself to be a menace at times, battling other heroes under misguided assumptions (like Thor in “Silver Surfer” #4) or being tricked into using his powers for sport (as seen in “Incredible Hulk” Vol.3 #95). However, the Silver Surfer proved his worth when he overcame Galactus’ brainwashing and saved Earth from impending doom, and has since fought to defend the Marvel Universe on countless occasions alongside the Fantastic Four and the Defenders.
COLOSSUS
No list of hard-hitting metal heroes would be complete without Colossus, the unstoppable mutant who’s able to transform his entire body into super-strong organic steel armor. His superhuman strength, stamina and durability arguably make him one of the toughest X-Men of all, even more so after Magneto realigned his cells as part of the 1986 “Mutant Massacre” crossover event.
Although he’s a superb hand-to-hand combatant, so his ability to attack shouldn’t be sniffed at, what’s most impressive about Colossus are his defensive capabilities. Shoot him with a rocket launcher, throw him off a 100-storey building, hit him with a magical attack, and hey presto, he’s fine! When he took over from Juggernaut as the unstoppable Avatar of Cyttorak, Colossus was also pretty much impervious to injury and had the power to ignore any impediment to his movement, no matter the size or density. Any man who can power through almost anything and come out unscathed on the other side is pretty damn “metal” in our eyes!
CABLE
It wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest that Chris Claremont’s mega-cyborg creation, Cable, who started out in “New Mutants” #87, is a veiled Terminator rip-off. Bulging muscles and blazing guns? Check. Elaborate back story involving time travel and alternative timelines? Check. Creepy red laser eye? Check. However, he’s since become a fan favorite and, perhaps as a result of that, is now one of the most fully-realized X-Men characters of the modern era.
As well as being one of the coolest-looking characters on the list, he’s also probably one of the most formidable: sure, his biomechanical arm and cybernetic eye make him stronger, tougher and enhance his field of vision, but don’t forget, he’s also a powerful mutant with a highly sought-after lineage (Cyclops and a Jean Grey clone? Jackpot!) gifted with telekinetic and telepathic abilities.
We here at CBR wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t also give a shout out to the Winter Soldier and on-off Captain America, Bucky Barnes, who also rocks an enhanced cybernetic arm that gives him super-strength and lightning-fast reflexes. Plus, unlike Cable, Bucky can operate his arm remotely via mental implant when it’s detached… but is that cooler than a super-arm from the future? You decide!
X-O MANOWAR
Aric of Dacia is a 5th-century barbarian Visigoth who managed to turn the tables on his alien abductors by taking control of one of their greatest weapons, the X-O Manowar armor. That should earn the darling of Valiant Comics considerable kudos in itself, but Manowar’s soooo much more than a time-and-space travelling super-thief.
Upon finding his way back to Earth and discovering that he’s been gone for about 1,600 years (because of time-space relativity and stuff), he made quite a show of his abilities, which include enhanced strength, speed and reflexes, invulnerability, halted ageing and accelerated healing, flight, X-ray vison, energy manipulation and, because creators Jim Shooter and Bob Layton really wanted to throw the kitchen sink at him, teleportation, technopathy and ESP, as well. He was already a ferocious warrior, so all this extra metal borders on overkill. The character was later reimagined in 2012 by Robert Venditti and Cary Nord for the Valiant relaunch in “X-O Manowar,” but his powers are largely the same: he’s still very much meant for war!
CYBORG
Vic Stone proves that you can’t keep a good guy down in the comic book world… especially when his parents have got a load of high-tech mechanical parts lying around at S.T.A.R. labs, just waiting to be claimed. After his body was mangled in a terrible accident — originally caused by a rampaging space-monster in the pre-New 52 universe, but later retconned in “Justice League” Vol.2 #2 to incorporate the Mother Box explosion — Stone became Cyborg, a part-man part-machine mash up that’s so “metal” it hurts.
His cybernetic enhancements give him superhuman strength, endurance and durability, enable flight and enhance his vision and hearing. He can release concentrated blasts of sound from his “sonic cannon” that are potent enough to shatter rock or deform steel. Oh, and he’s also got lasers in his fingers and a grappling hook if, y’know, all that flying around gets boring. As if all that wasn’t cool enough, Cyborg acquired a boatload of new skills during the New 52 revamp and can now assimilate with other technology, shapeshift, emit EMP blasts covering a 50-meter radius and teleport his super friends around using a Boom Tube. This is one metal man you don’t wanna mess with!
MAGNETO
Whoa, what a curve ball! The most “metal” superhero here isn’t metallically augmented at all. He does, however, have the capacity to manipulate it on a superhuman scale using magnetic fields, meaning he could probably take everyone on this list and win without even breaking a sweat. Now that we mention it, he does have an unfortunate habit of switching sides… but isn’t that half the fun of being an anti-hero?
Magneto’s magnetic powers extend right down to the atomic level (which makes sense when you think about it, given that electromagnetic force is responsible for chemical bonding), meaning he can manipulate chemical structures and rearrange matter with the power of his mutant mind. He can also use his magnetism as a kind of force-field that can selectively block out certain types of matter and energy that’s powerful enough to withstand the simultaneous detonation of multiple thermonuclear weapon blasts.
Throw in hardened telepathic resistance with or without the helmet, powers of astral projection and flight, and the ability to wield Thor’s hammer by manipulating its metallic properties (at least in the late Ultimate Universe, during “Ultimates” Vol.3 #5), and it makes for a pretty unsurpassable opponent. Magneto wins, hands down!
Are there any other metal heroes you think should have made our list? Let us know in the comments!
