EVERYTHING’S CHANGED:
“I cannot believe you’re partnered with Yasmine of all people.”
Demetri just laughs, rolling his eyes as he shrugs. His movements are slightly restricted by the very large, very delicate project he’d basically built his entire self for the sake of Yasmine and their project. “Doesn’t bother me,” he reminds you, “she’s the girl of my dreams.”
Rolling your eyes, you step forward, moving to open the cafeteria doors for him–seeing as his hands were full. “Well, it bothers me.” You can’t help the pout that curls onto your lips at your words.
However, when you turn to look at Demetri, he’s since stopped bothering to listen to you. His focus is on Yasmine, who is sitting at a table with Moon, and there’s a huge grin curling onto his lips. “Hey!” Demetri calls out, “you ready to rock…” He places the project piece on the table, taking a seat next to Yasmine, while you take one next to Moon. “Our earth science presentation?”
“I’m ready to go back to a world where we don’t have to talk on a regular basis,” Yasmine scoffs.
Quirking a brow, you tilt your head; “me too.”
“Hey, hey!” Demetri calls out, outweighing your comment to yourself. “My popularity’s on the rise, while yours is steadily declining.” Yasmine tenses at that, sitting up straighter. “But, uh, maybe we can meet in the middle, like a s*xual Venn diagram.”
Moon lets out a giggle, while you scoff (though unable to stop the smile on your lips). But what entertains you more is the disgusted look on Yasmine’s face as he spits out; “ew!”
“So,” Moon says, “what’s under the sheet?”
“I’m glad you asked.”
Demetri moves a stand, pulling off that cloth that had covered his project to reveal a very intricate and detailed Lego model of a volcano system. Your eyes widen as you take it in, every time you look over it you find something new, and honestly, you knew Demetri was smart and skilled in what he loved–you just never thought he’d make something this impressive.
“Behold…” Demetri holds his hands out before him for added effect, “what scientists believe to be the Valley when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.”
“Remind me to get you to help me with my projects,” you comment, turning to Demetri with a laugh. “This is amazing.”
He smiles at you, before turning back to Yasmine. “Go ahead,” he says to her, “press the hadrosaur egg.”
Yasmine hesitates a moment, before slowly reaching forward. The second she presses the button, a series of birds screeching echo across the otherwise silent table that had quieted down in anticipation. Then, the volcano roars, smoke erupting from the top as you let out a laugh in amazement.
“Not bad!” Yasmine grins, the expression on her face completely different then it had been seconds prior. “My parents may not have to pay for my A this time.”
“Oh, your parents will never have to pay for an A again.”
“Okay,” you shake your head, turning to Demetri. “That’s enough of that.”
Moon laughs, making you turn to her as she smiles at Demetri. “Seriously, though, Demetri,” she grins brightly, “this is so cool.”
“Yeah,” you nod, setting your hand on Demetri’s arm as you gesture towards the project. “Seriously. I didn’t know you could make something like this, not to mention intricate.”
“I know,” Demetri says, a little boastful but you feel he deserves it. “This thing is a masterpiece. And, everything is to scale. And at eight-thousand-two-hundred-and-fifty-one individual pieces, this meticulously assembled model represents the exact moment before the asteroid hit–”
Demetri doesn’t get to finish what he’s saying. In the next second, something yellow flashes by, narrowly missing you as you reel back in surprise. It’s a soccer ball and it does, however, smack right into the volcano of Demetri’s project, smashing it into pieces and thus destroying it in a matter of seconds.
When you turn your head in the direction the ball had come, your eyes narrow at the sight of Eli.
“Oh, pfft, I’m sorry, man,” Eli laughs, making his way over to the group of you, his focus entirely on Demetri. “Looks like my ball just got away from me.” One of his friends toss it back to him, him easily catching it as Demetri turns to him, disbelief written clear across his face.
“That took me three weeks to build.”
“Eh, took my ball three seconds to destroy.”
Pushing yourself to a stand, you glare at Eli, lips parting to say something but you find nothing is able to leave your lips. You’re stunned, and after what had happened the last time the two of you spoke, you don’t know what to say. He just meets your eyes, before turning around, heading back over to his friends.
“Do you have another one?” Yasmine asks, panic written clear across her face.
You see Demetri shuffle on his feet, and the look in his eyes gives it away.
“Wait, Demetri, it’s not worth it!” You call, grabbing his arm to pull him to a halt.
He just shakes his head at you, pulling his arm from your grasp with ease and making his way over to Eli–you right on his heels. “Another week, another p*ssing contest.” He snaps, “although I shouldn’t be surprised since you love p*ssing so much.”
Expression hardening, Eli steps directly in front of Demetri; “you landed one kick. You got lucky.”
“Better back off,” Sam calls out, having walked into the cafeteria and seeing all this, she’d promptly made her way over to you and Demetri. And being the way she is, of course she doesn’t hesitate, crossing her arms over her chest as she glares at Eli; “or you won’t be lucky.”
Eli scoffs, lips parting to say something before he pauses, eyes flickering to something past Sam. “Yeah, like you’ll start anything, princess,” he taunts, and your brows furrow at the nickname, lips curling in disgust. “Actually, why don’t you go sleep around with someone new and break his heart?”
That’s all it takes–in the next second, Sam is lunging forward, shoving Eli back directly into his friends.
“What’s going on here, Miss Larusso?”
Your shoulders fall as Counsellor Blatt’s voice echoes across the cafeteria. So that’s what–or rather, who–Eli had been looking at.
“You know our new guidelines against physical contact.” Then, turning to Eli, her face softens. “Did she enter your personal bubble without your verbal consent?”
“Yeah,” Eli nods, curling into himself for the effect of convincing Counsellor Blatt. “She definitely triggered me in my safe space.”
Scoffing, you shake your head.
You can’t believe this.
“What are you talking about? He started by destroying my science project!” Demetri reminds, turning around to gesture at his destroyed Lego model.
“That was an accident!” Eli quickly defends at the look Counsellor Blatt sends him. Then turning to Demetri, he shrugs, “you probably shouldn’t bring your toys to school anyway.”
“I don’t want excuses,” Counsellor Blatt disregards, “I just want you all to respect each other.”
“She’s right , guys.” Right on time, you can’t help but think, turning around to glare at Eli. “We should stop the aggression. Micro and macro.”
“Oh, give me a break,” Sam scoffs.
“Hey,” Counsellor Blatt calls, eyes narrowing at Sam. “Consider this a warning, Miss. Larusso. And get these Legos off the ground, someone could get hurt.”
Stood slightly behind Demetri, you shake your head.
You cannot believe that worked for him.
“For you p*nsies,” Eli calls out, stepping towards Demetri and Sam. “No space is safe.”
He shuffles back, laughing–then, his eyes meet yours briefly, as if remembering you were there, and he falters, just slightly. You just shake your head, swallowing thickly as you move to pull Demetri back.
“Come on, guys. He’s not worth it.”
-
“These gym shorts pinch in all the wrong places.”
Grinning slightly, Sam shrugs next to you; “come on, have a little school spirit.”
“Oh yeah,” he agrees sarcastically, “go mountain lions!” And then, for added effect, he lets out a light, mocking roar in reaction.
“I personally agree,” you sigh, hugging yourself. “I don’t like them either.”
Sam just shakes her head, finishing tying her shoelaces as she stands up. “You look fine, Y/N. Don’t worry.”
You just smile at her, though it doesn’t reach your eyes, before something catches your eyes. Staring past Sam, you frown when you see Eli and his posse of friends making their way onto the field, shoving anyone and anything out of the way. “Look,” you call, gesturing for Sam and Demetri, and without fault they listen.
By the look on Eli’s face, he clearly thinks he’s all that and more.
It sickens you in a way you can’t rightly explain.
“I wish we could do something about those cretins,” Demetri huffs, shaking his head.
“We can.”
“How?” You question, turning to Sam. “Counselor Blatt will give us detention just for breathing near them.”
Shuffling on her feet, Sam grins; “I don’t see her anywhere, do you?” At that, everyone looks around, and true to her word, Counsellor Blatt is nowhere to be found. “Besides, what’s a soccer game without a little physical contact?”
“I dunno,” you mumble, face scrunching up in concern.
“Come on, Y/N,” Sam argues, shaking her head at you. “They think we’re doormats. Let’s prove ‘em wrong.”
She seems determined, and this pit floods your stomach when you see Demetri smile in agreement.
“I, for one,” you speak up, raising your hand. “Think this is a horrible idea.”
-
You, for one, were a hundred percent correct.
The gym teacher caught on quickly, which was no surprise to you, and quickly all of you were sent to Counselor Blatt’s office.
Stood outside the door waiting with Sam, Demetri and a few other of your friends, Eli was in there now talking to her, and you feared exactly what lies he was spouting. Counselor Blatt was naïve enough to fall for his tricks back in the cafeteria, you had no doubt he’d be able to convince her of whatever lies he was telling her now.
You knew you should’ve tried to stop Sam and Demetri more–now that the school fight had happened, all the teachers were constantly watching the students. Especially those who had been involved in the fight directly. And given that Eli had already wormed his way onto Counselor Blatt’s good side, this really was a losing game for you and your friends.
The sound of the door opening pulls you from your thoughts and instantly, you straighten out as the first thing you see is Eli. He meets your gaze briefly before shuffling out the door, Counselor Blatt right behind him. She shuts the door behind her, turning to where Cobra Kai is stood; “Caldwell, Johnson, Rickenberger, and,” she shifts, turning around, and your eyes widen when her eyes fall on you directly. “Y/L/N. You four and Eli are free to go.”
Wait, what?
Instantly, your eyes flicker over to Eli—he smiles at you, hope in his gaze and you’re instantly frustrated at the fact that he thought simply getting you out of detention or punishment otherwise would change anything. Narrowing your eyes at him, you scoff at him, just as Demetri calls out; “unbelievable.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Sam cries, “what about us?”
“The rest of you will be receiving rehabilitative, not punitive, Saturday detention.”
“Detention?” Demetri calls out in disbelief, “oh, great, there goes another blemish on my permanent record.”
“This is bullsh*t!” Sam practically yells, causing you to wince in response.
“Miss Larusso! That is not how we express ourselves here. I think you need two weekends of rehabilitative detention.”
Gasping, Sam falters on the spot, before she’s raising her hand, slamming it on the locker next to her. “This school sucks!” And then, before anyone else can get a word in edgewise, she’s stomping off in anger.
Eyes flickering from the way Sam went and back to Counselor Blatt, Demetri hesitates; “I-I don’t know her that well.”
Counselor Blatt just quirks a brow, and with a sigh, Demetri turns, walking off with a simple wave your way as the other two follow him. You hesitate on the spot, turning to Counselor Blatt. “I-I don’t understand, Counselor Blatt,” you mumble, fiddling with your hands as you shake your head at her. “Why did I not get detention like them?”
Smiling, Counselor Blatt shakes her head; “Eli spoke of your reluctance to violence. He told me how you tried to get your friends to stop attacking Eli and his. Actions like that deserve rewards, Miss Y/L/N, not punishment.” Then, pausing, she falters; “though, your friends a-aren’t receiving punishment either. Just… rehabilitative detention.”
Nodding, you just sigh, letting her walk off as you stare in the direction Sam and Demetri had gone, and then the direction Eli had.
It takes you a split second to make your decision, before you’re moving, rushing down the hallway, and then turning, heading spinning around to find sight of who you’re looking for. You reach the main entrance of the school, and hear familiar laughter, head spinning around behind you, instantly catching sight of a familiar red.
Stalking forward, you shake your head; “did you think I’d be grateful?”
Eli pauses at the sound of your voice, eyes flickering to you before back to his friends. “I’ll catch up with you guys later, okay?” He offers, voice low as they nod, sending one final look at you, to which you glare back, before heading off, leaving you and Eli alone.
Crossing your arms over your chest, you raise a brow at Eli, waiting for him to speak.
“I just told the truth,” he shrugs, “that’s all.”
You scoff, rolling your eyes. “If you told the truth, then you and your friends would’ve gotten detention too.”
“Hey, they attacked us first,” Eli smirks.
“After you broke Demetri’s science project in the cafeteria!” You argue, shaking your head in bafflement. “How can you think you’re in the right here?”
“Because,” Eli hisses, narrowing his eyes at you. “They deserve it.”
“They’re my friends,” you remind, holding your hands out before you, “shouldn’t I deserve it too?”
“No,” he says with ease, without hesitation. “Not you.”
Snarling, you step back from him. “I told you I was done, to leave me alone. Why can’t you just do that?”
“Because you also said you liked me,” he reminds, “and I’m determined to make you remember why.”
Huffing, you let out a short laugh; “you’re doing a great job at it.”
And with that, you turn, moving to walk off–you miss the way Eli’s face hardens, jaw tensing as his eyes narrow in anger. But even if you had seen it, you wouldn’t have cared.
Not outwardly, anyway.
-
“Just for the record, I really don’t think this is a good idea.”
“They have to pay,” Sam argues, shaking her head at you, “they can’t just think they can walk all over us.”
“Yeah, but now that your mom found out we were training again, she hasn’t let us.” You remind, grabbing Sam by the arm to pull her back before she enters the arcade. “We aren’t as trained as them. We don’t even have a sensei anymore!” Meeting her gaze, you practically plead; “I think we should just stop and think about this for a minute.”
She scoffs, eyes narrowing darkly (a look Sam has never regarded you with), as she scoffs. “You just don’t want your boyfriend getting hurt.”
Reeling back at her words, shock floods you. Your hand leaves her arm, pulling back at first from the bafflement before hovering in front of you as hurt floods your gaze. “I already told you I had nothing to do with Eli getting me out of detention,” you shake your head, “I even tried to get Counselor Blatt to give me detention.”
Rolling her eyes, Sam just scoffs at you, turning around. “Whatever, Y/N.”
Lips left parted in disbelief, you pull your arm back to yourself, hugging yourself slightly. You don’t know what to do, in that moment it feels like you can’t even move—stuck in the middle of the arcade as Sam’s words repeat like a mantra inside of your head.
“It’s okay, Y/N,” Demetri calls out, placing his hand on your shoulder as you turn to look at him. “We all know you’re with us.” Offering you a small smile, you meet his eyes, before glancing at the rest, they all smile at you too, nodding and some of the hurt fades as you nod.
Sam was just upset—everyone was but you know she was also struggling. She hasn’t really told you and anytime you’ve tried to talk to her, she’s adamantly avoided the subject. But you can tell. She isn’t herself and that’s making her act out.
There was no point dwelling on it. At least not now.
Following closely behind Demetri, you all come to a stop when you meet up with Chris.
“Where are they?” Sam asks without hesitation.
“They snuck into the old laser tag place,” he explains.
“How many?”
“Four of them.”
“Five of us,” Sam nods, “I like our odds.”
“I gotta say, Sam,” Demetri says, meeting your gaze as reference back to your own reluctance, “are you sure we should be doing this?”
You hope, just briefly, that maybe she’ll listen to reason–if not from you, at least Demetri.
But, all she does is smile, shrugging; “we’re not on school property. This is our chance to fight back.”
-
It breaks out into a full fledged fight.
Exactly like you’d expected it to.
The second the five of you walk into the old laser tag area, it isn’t hard to spot them. When you walk in, the first one you see is, no surprise, Eli. He promptly avoids your gaze, settling it on Demetri instead as everyone instantly races at one another.
You lose sight of Eli almost immediately, and it’s like he’s purposefully trying to avoid you. Normally, it was the other way around, but you wanted to keep an eye on him and Demetri–make sure he didn’t go after him. While Demetri may have won the last fight, that didn’t mean he’d win this one.
But you couldn’t find him. It was hard enough to see in the dark already, even more so when bodies blended in together and you were dodging hit after hit.
Though, it was, nonetheless, to your advantage. Sam was right, having even just one more person helped sway the fight, especially when you guys hadn’t been able to train as often or as frequently as Eli and the rest of Cobra Kai.
At least, that was the case until Tory and more of Cobra Kai came in.
The advantage was lost within seconds.
“Sam Larusso.”
And instantly, you know your bad feeling was rightly placed.
“Where are you, b*tch?”
Dodging a hit, you duck under, glancing behind you to where Sam was only to see this look of fear across her face. Your eyes widen as you watch her shuffle back, everything that’s going on around her fading to the back of her mind as Tory calls out for her. It’s obvious she’s scared of her, and given what had happened to her, you don’t blame Sam–but this… this was exactly what you feared would happen.
Sam was one of, if not you’re strongest fighters. Without her there was no chance, even less so now that it was Miyagi-Do that was outmatched.
Turning to her, you reach out for her; “Sam–!”
You feel a punch hit you directly in the cheek, a groan of pain leaving your lips as you stumble back, losing your footing as you go crashing to the ground. Your vision blurs for a moment, feeling blood pour from his mouth, as your head lolls. You’re on your back, but slowly you flip yourself around, until you’re on your stomach, trying to push yourself up to your feet.
It’s then you see–Eli and Demetri. They’re fighting, but it’s clear whose winning. In a split second, the battle ends up in Cobra Kia’s favour and it’s no different for Demetri. Your eyes widen, panic striking you deep as you watch Eli kick Demetri to the ground, before grabbing him by the arm and pinning him on his stomach by bending it backwards.
Pushing yourself up to your feet without a second of hesitation, desperate to help Demetri, you make it two steps before a pair of arms circle around you. They grab at your arms, holding you back and in place as you fight to break out of the strong grip. When you turn your head enough, you realize it’s the same boy from before–the one who’d tried to hurt you during the school fight. He has a smirk across his face as his grip tightens, turning painful.
“No!”
Head snapping back to Eli and Demetri, your heart falls to the pit of your stomach.
But none of that matters.
“Please, stop!”
Not when you hear Demetri begging for mercy.
“Eli, stop!”
Not when you see Eli holding Demetri’s arm back, seconds away from breaking it.
“Stop!”
He wouldn’t… he wouldn’t actually break his…
“It’s me,” Demetri cries, desperate, pleading, “don’t do it, no!”
“Eli!” You scream, the words leaving your lips before it even registers in your mind. You’re screaming words you don’t even realize, panic striking you so deep that you feel like you can’t breathe. “Please, don’t! Eli!”
But he isn’t looking at you. He isn’t paying attention to you.
“Finish him!” Tory taunts, “he deserves it!”
“Do it, Hawk!”
“No, no,” Demetri pleads, “I’ll go! I’ll go!”
“He’s not a freak.”
All eyes turn to you as you speak, standing there with your arms crossed and a nasty glare on your face.
“And he isn’t ugly either.”
The boy, the one who’d been bullying Eli and Demetri (specifically Eli) two seconds ago, turns to you, scoffing. “You’re telling me you can actually look at his face without being disgusted?” He gestures to Eli, who stares back uncomfortably, hand hovering in front of his lips, “I mean.., look at him.”
“Yeah, I can,” you shrug, “you just can’t because you’re a jerk. Nothing but a bully”
The boy's eyes narrow, offended by what you’d said, moving to step towards you.
“Just what is happening here?”
The sound a voice calling out to him halts him and both your heads snap over to see who it is. It’s a teacher, his face narrowed in suspicion as he steps towards you both, hands on his hips.
You don’t hesitate to speak;
“Jason was bullying Eli, Mr. Anderson. I was just telling him to stop.”
The words leave your lips with ease, just as Jason’s eyes widen.
Mr. Anderson turns to Jason, brow raised; “is that true, Jason?”
“I-I–”
Mr. Anderson just sighs, shaking his head—the answer is clear. “Come with me to the principal’s office, now.”
He glares at you as he walks by, but you just shake your head, staring at him with a blank expression, waiting for him to walk off before you let yourself relax. Hands falling by your side, you make your way over to the table Eli and Demetri are sitting at, smiling softly.
“Sorry about him, he’s just a bully,” you shake your head, grinning at the both of them. “And you shouldn’t listen to him.”
The two just stare at you in disbelief.
Shaking your head at their reactions, you laugh; “what, have you never had a girl talk to you before?”
Glancing at each other, Demetri nods; “actually, yes.”
You let out a giggle, “well, I’m Y/N.” You smile brightly, teasingly introducing yourself, eyes twinkling with warmth as you let your gaze flicker from Demetri, over to Eli. “I’ve actually been meaning to introduce myself for a bit… I’m new and I don’t really have any friends, so…”
Lips parting, Eli gestures to him and Demetri; “and you want to be friends with us?”
“Yeah,” Demetri nods, “you do realize we’re losers, right?”
Shrugging, you just grin; “I’d rather be friends with losers than bully’s.”
Turning to look at each other, Eli and Demetri smile in disbelief.
“Eli, please!”
In the next second, the sound of bones cracking echo.
Demetri wails in pain, and then the arms around you leave, dropping you to your knees with a thud. A sob wretches past your lips as you hug yourself, staring at Demetri as he curls into himself, screaming in pain.
You can’t… you can’t believe he actually…
That Eli would…
Pushing yourself to your feet, you sway on your feet, stumbling forward as you move towards Demetri. He barely registers you’re there, and as you kneel next to him, your hands are held out towards you, unsure how to help. The sight of his arm is one you can’t bare to look at and his screams of pain pierce your heart, making your vision blur even more as the tears continue to stream down your cheeks.
You see a shadow out of the corner of your eye, and turning, you see that Eli still hasn’t left like the rest of his friends.
His gaze is on Demetri, but when he feels you staring at him, he turns to look at you.
You don’t see the look in his eyes, the look of regret, however small, that remains in his eyes–you don’t care either.
You… He broke Demetri’s arm…
Hurt Demetri…
This was far beyond attacking him in the mall or the school, this was more than just bullying him and destroying his things–this… this was terrifying.
This was something you’d never thought Eli would be possible if doing. Something, no matter how much he changed, you never would’ve even thought he’d do.
And for him to do it, it made you think that maybe Eli really was gone.
-
Hugging yourself tightly, you watching as Mrs. Larusso hugs Sam, comforting her as she breaks down.
Demetri was currently being looked at by a doctor right now. You’d gone to the hospital to be checked out briefly as well, but of course, compared to Demetri–your injuries were nothing.
And now you were left waiting. It felt wrong to leave without being able to check in on Demetri first and honestly, you didn’t know where to go. You were scared to move from the spot, scared to even speak—you could feel yourself shaking, getting lost in your own thoughts as you sat there.
“Y/N.”
Freezing at the sound of your mother’s voice, you hesitate to glance at her. You’d known the hospital had called her, you just hadn’t thought, or rather it hadn’t occurred to you, that she’d come here herself.
You can only imagine how angry she is, how disappointed she must be in you…
Footsteps growing nearer, your mother doesn’t stop until she’s directly in front of you.
You expect to hear yelling, or at least scolding of some kind. But instead, you feel a pair of arms wrap around you, pulling you against warmth as your eyes widen in disbelief, freezing in your mothers arms, staring past her. Her hand moves to cradle the back of your head, holding you close, as then, slowly, you feel your resolve fade and the tears flood all over again.
In that moment, it doesn’t matter. Not her neglect, not how angry you’d been at her, not how lonely you were without her. All that mattered was that she was here, holding you and right now, that was all you needed.
“Mom,” you cry, voice breaking as you grab onto her, practically clinging onto her. “He… Eli broke Demetri’s arm…”
“I know, baby, I know,” he soothes, running her hand through your hair as she hugs you tighter.
“I couldn’t do anything to stop him!” You sob, “I… I couldn’t do anything!”
“Shh, it’s okay, Y/N. It’s not your fault.”
Shaking your head, you just cry, “why would Eli… why would he do that, mom? Why?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart,” she pulls back, moving to cup your cheeks as she gently brushes away your tears. “I don’t know what’s happening. Y/N. I… I need you to tell me. Then, I can help you, okay?” Shaking your head, she just nods, meeting your eyes; “I promise you.”
Lips parting, you hesitate.
“I want to be there for you, Y/N,” she whispers, “but I need you to let me.”
Nodding slowly, you let out a heavy exhale, hands shaking as you move to hold them in front of you. “Okay,” you ease out, moving to meet her gaze. “Okay, mom.”
