System Admin Undercover

Recently got a new job, have been very intentionally avoiding I.T. Roles while job hunting, and so the computer problems at my new office aren't my problem here, and I plan to keep it that way. Lots of problems internal to the company with IT, I don't have SuperUser Privileges here, so I keep quiet . Their IT Guy is outsourced and seems pretty flaky, weeks at a time to respond to simple tickets. Could I solve everything wrong if I was given Admin? Yes. Am I going to speak up? Hell no! Windows 10 sucked, Windows 11 is worse; I'm just glad to not need to take any work home with me and if my ability to function is stalled because their outsourced IT Guy is a dunce, that's not my problem.

I just find it funny listening to the ongoing problems, because they objectively shouldn't be problems and could be solved in minutes a piece. Kudos to their IT Guy though, man must be living the dream.

Also, Windows 11 is just straight up malware and it's barely veiled these days, I write Linux User-ly

Wilma again

I have ongoing issues with the Linux Mint installation on the laptop I use for software development and blogging.

You may recall I tried upgrading to version 22 (code name: Wilma), encountered a graphics regression, and had to revert the upgrade using TimeShift. Since then, my Linux experience hasn't been quite right. While troubleshooting an issue, I uninstalled Python; this broke APT, causing routine software updates to fail.

Yesterday I created a new partition on the HDD and attempted a clean install of Wilma there. After several tries, I suspect that my largest USB thumb drive (NXT brand, purchased in January 2024) suffers from data corruption.

Believe it or not, my 2nd-largest thumb drive is too small to hold the 2.9 GByte ISO image, so this morning I'm off to buy a new thumb drive.

Seeking IT post

Sadly, the contract for @fordprfct has come to an end, and he has to find new work. (although 4 years for what was supposed to be a 1 year contract isn't bad - and they jumped through hoops to keep him when his former contracting company was rejected.) I've seen through his coworkers' reactions, he's VERY good at what he does. Jobhunting is much more unpleasant. Hello, Xia!

Today I upgraded my Linux Mint desktop from Wilma (version 22) to Xia (version 22.1). The upgrade itself went very smoothly. After it was done, however, I decided to rename the mount point for my home directory ... because the old (autogenerated) name was ridiculously long and awkward.

The rename didn't go smoothly. I broke the Xia install so badly that I couldn't log in. Luckily I still have a bootable partition with Virginia (version 21.3) installed. I booted Virginia and used it to repair my mistake.

According to Wikipedia, "Xia" is a surname and the name of several dynasties. Unlike all the other Linux Mint codenames, it doesn't seem to be a feminine given name. I guess the release manager goofed!
