I was drawing Tony as usual, but for some reason his hair ended up looking like the Tiktok middle part hairstyle and I think that Marvel really missed an oportunity here, RDJ would have rocked this hairstyle, i feel like it gives a lot of “Genius, Millionaire, Playboy, Philantrophist” vibes, plus he looks kinda cute. Anyways, just some weird thoughts at 1 AM.

Since the new Sensational She-Hulk run is coming, what were your thoughts on the last run, (or any of the comics before that, e.g, the Soule run, Tamaki hulk, Aaron Avengers, Immortal She-Hulk)?

I enjoyed Rowell's She-Hulk run for the most part. I actually liked the Jen/Jack of Hearts relationship bc I thought it was interesting how it built off their interactions in Avengers. I need to reread Tamaki's run bc I feel like that might give some context (intentionally or not) to Rowell's She-Hulk and how she feels comfortable enough to be in a relationship with Jack after he caused her to lose control.

I will say I was not a fan of the end of the series with the Scoundrel love triangle thing, it felt like a little diversion where instead of solving her relationship issues with Jack she flirted with Scoundrel. and not in like a "she's using this to avoid her problems instead of address them, this is in character" sort of way (which it could have been!) but in like "the story has been put on hold bc Rowell thought her bad boy character was hot" sort of way. Also not a fan of the way Jen constantly told him she wasn't into him and he'd keep hitting on her and purposefully setting things up so he could meet her. not just bc he's being a dick but also from a story perspective like, the story has changed from being About Jen to being About Jen's "Flirtation" with Scoundrel. There's really only so much of villains creeping on Jen that I can take and just bc the villain is hotter than say, Mole Man, doesn't mean it's alright. There wasn't even meta commentary about how he's derailing her story to insert himself into it. 😐 Bring back Jen complaining extensively directly to the writer! Bring back fourth wall breaking! I really hope that the change to the Sensational title means the return of extreme fourth wall breaking.

I'm a bit torn on how it depicted Titania bc on the one hand. Funny. Also it remembered Marsha. But on the other hand, like that is her nemesis, Titania is never going to get along with Jen. It's not even really about Jen, Titania has her own issues that just can't be fixed offscreen. I really liked how Jen and Mallory's friendship was depicted though. They're competitive and they're rivals and they don't really get along but also they respect each other and they're begrudgingly friends I want to see more of it! I hate the way Slott wrote them it was so one dimensional he's my nemesis for real. Speaking of Slott's bad choices, I approve of Mallory and Awesome Andy being in a relationship but come on you can not just drop that in there with the way Slott left them, I really hope it's expanded on in the new Sensational run. My only other request for the new Sensational is Wyatt. Please bring back Wyatt. I miss Wyatt.

LOVE Soule's She-Hulk did you know he was an actual lawyer how cool is that I wish he'd gotten to write her longer, I read Tamaki's Hulk but I need to revisit it I do remember liking it though, I have NOT read Aaron's Avengers but I'm scared of what I've seen from it, I have also not read Immortal She-Hulk but idk really anything about it

Its wild growing up in a household that was both marvel and dc orientated, and then never actually interacting with any of the media, because its left me with such a distorted concept of what either multiverse is. Like, i thought spiderman was a dc character for deadass 10 years until end game came out and i was like hey wait.

At your apartment door, a package was outside again. This was the tenth time in two weeks that you had received an anonymous gift, from flowers to small souvenirs of places you had always wanted to visit, yet there was not a single clue as to the sender.

Upon opening today's package, you found a beautiful silver pendant, with a small blue crystal, along with a note:

You sat on the couch, holding the pendant in your hand. It wasn't just the mystery of the sender, but the feeling that someone was watching you, someone who knew too much about you.

What have been some of your big inspirations/points of education* with your comic work?

*could mean learning resources but also just, good advice you got once or improvements to your workflow you figured out

I went to the School of Visual Arts, where I majored in Cartooning! A lot of what I learned, I learned from Indie Cartoonist Jason Little and DC/Marvel Editor Joey Cavalieri, both of whom taught multiple classes I've taken (mainly fundamental stuff but there were also some extra classes with them like Jason taught my Digital Comics course and Joey taught my History of Cartooning class). I learned how to draw trees from Jason. And from reading Pogo.

I've drawn a lot of inspiration in my storytelling from both Bone and Hellboy, mostly! Both Jeff Smith and Mike Mignola are masters of pacing in comics, and if you happen to be unfamiliar with their works, I can't recommend them enough. Besides those two, the rich, moody internal monologues of Spider-Man: Blue and Spider-Man: Evolve or Die are things I often think about when it comes to dialogue writing. That and (at least when it comes to writing Rouge's dialogue) my older sister. Just, like, in general. Pay attention to how the people around you speak. It helps a ton when figuring dialogue.

Hellboy is getting mentioned again because Mignola's heavy inks are something I like to look over in order to learn from and improve myself. Hellboy, Carl Barks's Donald Duck comics, Asterix & Obelix, Will Eisner's various works, Calvin and Hobbes ALL have this beauty in their inking that can really inspire. Personally, I'd like to get a bit messier with my inking. Messy inks feel so alive. They're so visually interesting.

For colors, I highly recommend this book. I've read it and re-read it as much as possible. It may be for painters, but cartoonists can and should learn from all kinds of art forms. The works of Moebius were also mega foundational for me in learning how to color my comics. The man knew his palettes and how to not confine himself too much to what's "realistic". Speaking of painters (you may roll your eyes at this one) I'm also a fan of Frank Frazetta.

For panelling, I only have one true inspiration, and that's the work of Tess Stone. I grew up reading Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name. It changed how I viewed the limitations of panelling forever. Of course, it may be harder to find that comic these days, so here's a snippet:

Basic advice: really really take your time taking in art that you like, and try to reverse-engineer how it was made in your head. Heck, even if there's art you DON'T like, overall, but has elements you DO like, you can learn from that, too!

As for workflow... Man, I wish I could give you any kinda advice on that. I'm struggling with it, myself. I guess I've got two things?

If you have multiple deadlines for, say, multiple commissions or something, or you're trying to put out a weekly comic, but you're also doing something else, break the day up into time slots for each project, and switch the moment it's time to. Keep yourself on that schedule. I'm not very good at this.

I draw pretty detailed thumbnails, so sometimes I'll skip the penciling step in comics and blow up the thumbnail to ink over that. It's faster for sure! It's not always the right solution, however.

The fun part with this is that there already is some crossover between aliens or UFO encounters and cryptid folklore. Now, this does betray that, to some degree, modern folklore has taken a more science-adjacent tone. You can see this in terminology. Instead of folklore, we have pseudo-science fields like cryptozoology or parapsychology.

The difference between cyptozoology and folklore centering on strange creatures in the forest is simply that we, as individuals, would like to see ourselves as less superstitious, and more rational, than those who came before us. And those who came before us felt the same way about their predecessors. The terminology changes, but the underlying idea of looking for something inexplicable, or finding something new remains the same. This is something you may want to keep in mind while creating new strands of pseudoscience to account for the supernatural creatures in your world.

The irony is, in scratching off the comic book approach, you're skipping over something interesting and fun. What happens when the supernatural creatures of folklore and myth are aliens? Erich von Dänikenis probably the most prominent advocate for this idea. If you've ever seen Stargate, his idea of, “paleo-contact,” and the idea is that major mythological figures were aliens should be familiar. This is specifically a branch of pseudo-archeology and psuedo-history.

It's not hard to spin this off into the idea of, “supernatural,” creatures that are actually exiled aliens. The Fey are particularly good for this, if you've spent any significant time looking at Celtic myths, though this also works with any sufficiently detailed pantheon. Again, that's basically the route Stargate went with the Egyptian pesedjet, and gradually expanding into more cultures as the TV series' continued. This is also the route Marvel went with Thor, meaning this is, literally, a comic book approach.

While the actual comic book is much darker, the original Men in Black film does a wonderful job of existing as a quasi-fever-dream suggestion for a world where supernatural entities operate as a kind of police force regulating visiting extraterrestrials. The technology they're playing with is said to be of alien origin, but really, we're solidly in Clarke's Third Law territory here.

The fuzzy territory Men in Blackbrings into focus also illustrates one difficulty with this idea. The difference between an extraterrestrial and a fey or demon is the perspective you bring to the discussion. They're allalien beings. Aliens have become a new form of outside creature. The difference between the premise of War of the Worldsand Doom II lies in the aesthetics of the monsters that came from Mars. This doesn't mean you can't use both, but you should be aware that they will naturally, “fill the same slot,” in your story, and it's something to be conscious of. At the same time, this also creates a natural delineation if you want to mix and match different approaches to the supernatural and aliens.

The short version of this idea is that you can divide most supernatural fiction into a few general approaches. Either the monsters are hidden from the world via some (probably magical or technological) means, hidden via their own actions (which is to say, staying hidden), or they're a part of the daily world. With some play between the second and third category depending on how many people are in on the secret. Mixing fantasy monsters and aliens gives you a good excuse for why one group might fall into one of the above categories while another does not, and allows for some wild combinations. Such as a world where aliens are a part of everyday life, but the supernatural is hidden by some mystical veil, a world where aliens hide among the population using technology while monsters try desperately to avoid being discovered by the modern world, or a world where supernatural  beings are simply a part of everyday life, but the world is currently under a covert alien onslaught. Really, there are a lot of options here, and the only limit is your creativity.

I will say, this is something that is tailor made to have fun with. It's is a wild mix, and there is a lot of freedom to how you approach this, including a lot of ways you can shake up conventional interactions between the groups.

"A love story. Elizabeth Swan and the sea." Read it. Just do it. It's so so so good. And it's barely 1200 words so you can read it and then spend an hour contemplating what you just read and still have time to do other things.

I don’t think anyone has suggested this yet, but I wonder if Mr. Priest’s real name is some sort of variation of the name Yisra’el (יִשְׂרָאֵל).

The meaning is relevant to what’s happening with Mr. Priest, being something along the lines of “he that striveth with God”. The question of whether Mr. Priest will fall or not, and whether his faith is strong or not, is being brought up a lot.

I also think that Imuri would find humor in that, as she was sent to tempt him. The meaning would certainly appeal to Imuri, who marveled at the idea of being so charming, so loved, to the point of being chosen over God… her only calling his name once she made him fall… it would be the mark of victory, a goading if you will- he struggled with God, but instead of God/his faith prevailing, as it seems to be the hidden meaning, it would be Imuri's win instead.

Furthermore, there's a bit of linguistic humor if that's the case. The name Yisra'el (יִשְׂרָאֵל) is composed of “el” (אֵל) which means “God”… and it also has “sarah (שָׂרָה)”, which here means “to fight, to contend”, but can also mean “princess, noblewoman”. Fitting, as Asmodeus tried to find her Sarah in Mr. Priest’s soul, but got mostly a beating instead.

Finally, Yisra’el was the other name given to Jacob after he wrestled with a divine being. Jacob, in the Bible, was married to Rachel and Leah.

Seeing as Leah and Mr. Priest already have quite a few parallels, especially regarding their first and second encounters with Beelzebub and Asmodeus, respectively, and the author seems to be setting them up as narrative foils (seemingly opposite personalities but have quite a few things in common, “belong” to opposing factions in the Church, chosen one vs unchosen one, etc), I think it would be fitting if they were connected by name as well.

The name doesn’t really have to indicate a future romance, mind you, as I don’t think it will. But if (and that’s a BIG IF) that was Mr. Priest’s name, it would make for an interesting contrast against Leah taking Judas’ seat (and Mr. Priest taking Jesus’ seat) during Leviathan’s arc. Something about seemingly one-sided devotion, deception and unrelenting love, I dunno. Should be interesting anyway.

On a side note, I think it would be cute if Mr. Priest’s name was shortened to “Rae” (ラエ) from “Yisrael” (イスラエル) (especially to contrast with Leah’s “Rea” (レア). I know it’s usually a nickname for Rachel, but that would just make it funnier to me. Or “Rael” would work too.

But I digress, Mr. Priest’s real name could really be anything.

Thor + Balder=Marvel!Thor (3/3)

I have not watched TLAT and don't plan to do so. So I won't take that into consideration. Also, note I have read a small percentage of Thor comics and have a preference for those that have Loki on them (especially if Loki isn't "just evil").

Marvel!Thor's Similarities to Balder:

In the MCU, Loki kills him and he comes back to life. In the comics, Marvel!Thor and Marvel!Loki have a Cain and Abel dynamic. In the mythology, Balder dies when Loki hands a mistletoe arrow to the blind god Hodr (and Balder's twin brother) to shoot at the "indestructible" Balder in a game where everyone was throwing things at Balder for the lulz.

All of Asgard loves him and acts like he's perfect. In the MCU, Thor's friends are loyal to him no matter what he did. They are ready to try to unbanish him right away despite Thor nearly starting a war. In a large portion of the comics, it gets quite annoying how often and constantly Thor is being praised. I find myself eye-rolling so often. In the mythology, Balder is "the fairest of the Gods" and everyone loves him, and Frigga goes around making everyone and even fucking plants and rocks swear oaths to never harm Balder. Of course, she forgets a sprig of mistletoe. When Balder dies, they try to bring him back by making everything cry for him, but the giantess Thokk (believed to be Loki in disguise) refuses.

Considered to have been influenced by Jesus. Balder dies and comes back after Ragnarok to the new world. It's believed the Christian Snorri altered Balder for his purposes. The Thor (2011) movie was originally approached by writer Mike Protosevich with the intention of turning an Old Testament God into a new Testament God. MCU!Thor dies protecting a town and comes back to life after proving himself worthy (Fun fact, it was originally going to be set in the Middle Ages not 2011 NM but for budget reasons this was changed).

Not as hot-headed or bloodthirsty as myth!Thor. I consider Marvel!Thor to be an amalgam of myth!Balder and myth!Thor personality-wise.

Marvel!Thor is often compared to the sun despite being a storm god, and Balder is the god of Light. Thor's sunny disposition came from myth!Balder. It's my belief that had Balder a cooler/less Jesus-like title than "God of Light", Marvel would have Balder comics and not Thor comics.

MCU-specific: Frigga is his biological mother. In neither comics or mythology is Frigga Thor's mother. She's Balder's mother. And the closest thing to a Balder in the MCU is Thor.

Prophetic dreams of bad things to come. In AoU, MCU!Thor dreams of Asgard's ruin. In the Norse myths, Balder dreams of his own death, which prompts Frigga to seek oaths from EVERYTHING that they won't harm Balder (making him invincible) but forgets a sprig of mistletoe for being "too young".

An example of the convenient narrative bullshit I consider to be "Balder-like" in Marvel Thor (on par with "everything cried for Balder except evil Loki"):

Marvel!Thor's Similarities to Thor (They were basically added to make the Marvel amalgam "edgier" and "manlier"):

Hammer. The main difference is that in the myths the ability to lift the hammer is due to some gloves and a belt Thor outfits himself with. It has nothing to do with whatever Odin considers "worthy."

War-mongerer tendencies- In Thor 1 MCU!Thor nearly starts a war over an insult and kills some Jotuns along the way. In the myths, Myth!Thor's favorite past time was smashing things into puree with Mjolnir, especially Jotnar (mass murder was his favorite hobby). The comics are weird, and there's so many runs I feel weird making a broad generalization. But most of them have problematic elements because they'll portray Asgard as always good if they were written before a certain year/decade.

Uses physical violence for intimidation. In the beginning of TR, Thor threatened to bash Loki's skull in after finding out Loki survived. The comics show him casually manhandling or beating the shit out of Loki for a variety of reasons(sometimes warranted, sometimes not). In the myths, Thor is sicced after Jotnar and Loki on various occassions, and it ends up badly for the the Jotnar and Loki.

Anger management issues. See above examples.

Reacts very badly to insult. In the MCU, he nearly starts a war over being called "princess." In the mythology, he is rather pissed off about having to wear a dress and pretend to be Freyja.

Myth!Thor and Marvel!Thor differences:

Thor is respected/feared in the myths but he's not as charismatic as the Marvel version. He's not the one even the fucking rocks cried for to bring back from Hel. That's a Balder trait added onto Thor. Whereas in the comics, even Marvel!Balder is whining about how he's not as strong/perfect as Marvel!Thor.

Myth!Thor is crueler. Marvel softened him up (and it was pretty clear they would have picked Balder had he a cooler title).

Obligatory Thor is a red-head in the mythology.

Thor's hammer in myths was given to him by Loki who made a wager with some dwarves to restore Sif's hair and bring gifts to the Aesir/Vanir. Lifting it is also not dependent on worthiness, but on a powerbelt and some gloves. In Marvel, the hammer usually existed before Thor and Loki (unless it's a Norse-inspired run like Loki (2010)).

Thor's biological mother isn't Frigga in the mythology or comics, but she is in the MCU.

ever since it was confirmed that you, the niece of robert downey jr, were going to play tony stark's daughter, everyone on social media lost their shit.

in a good way, of course.

in the marvel cinematic universe, you play the daughter of tony stark. your character takes on the responsibilities of being 'the next iron man', as some will say. your character is as witty, charming, sarcastic and smart as tony is. which is why people thought that having none other than a blood relative of the man who brings tony stark to life play your character was a great casting decision.

they especially went crazy when it was revealed that your character ends up being the love interest of peter parker. the scene between you and tom in infinity war was a fan favorite. said scene being where you realize that thanos had gotten what he wanted. the one where tom's unscripted line broke the heart of millions of people.

the one where your characters share a kiss before he's turned into dust before your character has a full blown mental breakdown over losing the love of her life. where tony pulls your character close, sharing the painful grief, heartbreak and sadness.

and if someone had told you that specific on-screen kiss would change your life, you would've thought that they were crazy.

but here you were, sitting in your trailer as you were about to go onto set. your character was brought back to be in the new spider-man movie. of course, it was no secret that you and tom had real life feelings for each other, but you found each scene to be a little bit harder to hide the fact that you were slowly starting to fall in love with him.

you were waiting for your call-time to come back to set to wrap up for the day, absentmindedly flipping through the paper script before you heard a knock on your trailer door. you got up, opening the door and being met with a familiar pair of brown, warm eyes.

you smiled sweetly, "hey, come in."

tom smiled back at you as he made his way into the trailer, closing the door behind him. you sat back down on the couch. tom had asked earlier on in the day if you wanted to run through a few lines together before going back to film. you had agreed quickly, praying that it didn't sound too eager to make sure he didn't catch onto the fact that you'd do anything as long as you got to be with him.

he did catch on though. but he didn't mind, he was glad you were as smitten as he was. he was glad to know that he wasn't the only one crushing hard on the other.

"which scene did you want to go through?" you asked as he sat down across from you. he flipped to the page where he had bent the top corner, letting his leg slowly start shaking as nerves took over his body.

"we could do page 223, if you wanted to."

you flipped to the page, eyes slightly widening. you were familiar with this scene, it was the one the two of you were doing later. the one where your characters kiss.

oh, fuck.

"sure," you cleared your throat, "where do you want to start?"

he chuckled, "yeah, we can say that," his eyes looked up from the script as he looked at you, "however, i'd much rather spend time with you than chase shocker through the streets of manhattan."

you smiled, "you like me that much, tiger?"

he shook his head, smiling softly, "no, i love you that much."

you smiled, "it's honor to be loved by you, spider-boy."

you both read the line at the bottom of the page. you bit down on your lip nervously.

"we don't have to kiss right now if you don't want to," he said, his british accent filling your ears again, "i mean, i know we have to when we film, but right now we don't have to."

"i mean," you shrugged, "it's in the script."

he chuckled, "yeah, but we can save it for the cameras."

"i mean, i don't... mind... as long as you don't, obviously." you stammered, cheeks turning hot as a light pink shade dusted his cheeks. he nodded.

"i don't mind either."

"okay," you chuckled nervously.

"okay," he smiled, "did you wanna... c'mere, or did you want me to..."

he trailed off as you waved him off, "i can come over there."

you bit down on your lip nervously as you got up, ignoring the way your legs felt like jello. he watched as you climbed into his lap, like the way you're supposed to in the movie. both legs on each sides of his hips, his hands wrapped around your waist as yours snaked around his neck. he was so close, the smell of his cologne filling your nose as the warmth from his body radiated off of him.

"is this okay?" you asked, slowly starting to be distracted by how close the two of you were.

he nodded, eyes flickering from your lips back up to your eyes, "yeah,"

"cool," you smiled shyly, your heart pounding against your ribs. his hands came up and cupped your face, like his character is supposed to.

"is this okay?"

"it's great," you nodded, forehead pressing against his.

"cool," it was his turn to become shy.

"ready?" you bit down on your bottom lip.

"yeah," he said, "you?"

"mhm," your eyes closing due to how content you were. you could've stayed like this for the rest of time.

he brought your face down to his as he kissed you softly. you kissed him back, his left hand moving has he gripped your waist, squeezing you tighter against him as your lips slipped together. he made the first move, his teeth gently pulling at your bottom lip. you gasped quietly against his mouth, his tongue slipping in as he kissed you passionately.

this was all the two of you now, nothing scripted. nothing but pure lust for one another.

the two of you kissed for what felt like hours, but in reality it was probably only a couple minutes. you hadn't realized, but you ended up moving to lay flat on your back, tugging on his hoodie as you brought him with you. he didn't let his lips leave yours as he hovered over you, pulling away slowly so he could catch a breath.

"holy shit," he panted softly.

you chuckled, "is that a good 'holy shit' or a bad one?"

he leaned back down, shaking his head with a smile, lips brushing up against yours as he spoke before kissing you again, "a very good one."
