I painted one of my grandma’s turtles while she’s in a rehab center 🙃

I gave up towards the end because it was 2am and the water bowl didn’t seem worth it nor did the wood chips. Also the head is too big

Here’s the actual Bigalow! He was stolen by a raccoon one time, that’s why his shell is like that. There’s also 3 other turtles but I was not feeling up to that, considering I haven’t done any art in the past 6 weeks.

My siblings and my dad and I wanted to make my grandma something that could just look nice in her room, as opposed to pity “get well” cards and flowers. She’s a very strong person and feels embarrassed that she has to be in this situation, and I know that’s hard.

My least favorite take is that the story of Jamie’s dad is about substance abuse. It’s not. Addiction is a disease. At least in the US it’s classified as substance use disorder. And it’s a treatable condition that should be viewed as a public health matter and not a moral matter.

But that’s not the issue with James Tartt, Sr. The issue with James is that he’s abusive — physically, emotionally, and sexually — towards Jamie. Now, maybe that is exacerbated by substance use, particularly alcohol. But that doesn’t fully explain or excuse behavior.

And again, I believe that people can change. No matter how old they are or what horrible things they’ve done. And I believe that *societally* those people deserve second chances. But believing both of those things doesn’t require that the the *individual* they harmed extend forgiveness. Those are complex and individual choices.

The show implies that James Tartt Sr. is in rehab. And I think that’s great. People should absolutely get the medical treatment they need (AA isn’t evidence based, btw, but that’s a discussion for another day). But getting treatment for substance use disorder doesn’t automatically fix the behaviors he engaged in, even while under the influence. And me saying that doesn’t mean I’m demonizing people with substance use disorder.

i have an update. i am happy to report that my grandmother has made a fantastic recovery! it was touch and go there for a while, but she is finally home and has improved so much. it's such a relief because for a while there we weren't sure if she'd make a full recovery. i'm so glad she did

my new psychiatrist has a lot of fun new ideas about whats wrong with me (bipolar being one of them) but we agreed i should probably get to a stable place hormone/medication/substance wise before testing me for anything. she told me to reach out to an addiction clinic for advice with the alcohol situation and said something along the lines of "they probably wont admit you because youre too functional, but they might have some resources to share with you" so i was like alright sure whatever. we'll see.

called them today and told them about my situation (drinking pretty much every day for years to cope with a toxic workplace, have since attempted to cut back and cant) and the guy on the phone was like yyyyyyeahh, we should probably admit you for a monitored detox or else the withdrawal symptoms could literally kill you, sooooo

i at least can like, pick when i have to go but idk. im trying not to be surprised pikachu face about this since its been an issue for years but it was kind of funny the psych was like "youre too functional for rehab" and the addiction clinic told me the opposite.

I know I yell a lot about Nightow ruining my health and happiness but Colourless Expression really is such an INTENSELY impactful character chapter about SUFFERING. These people drink a lot for fun (can't blame 'em, given where they live) but in the aftermath of remembering about July Vash is day drinking to cope--and his friends don't even know he's been drinking until now. FUCKING OUCH

I've done it all - attended Alcoholics Anonymous twice a day, five days a week. Memorized the fourth edition of the "Big Book" from cover to cover. Admitted myself into two different rehabs, staying 60 days each time.

What has ultimately kept me sober from drinking is confiding in my therapist and taking a combination of Acamprosate and Naltrexone twice a day to curb alcohol cravings.

I drank heavily for nearly two decades, and frankly have the experience and genetic predisposition to confirm that addiction is not a choice.

But sobriety and self-care are.

Did 5 laps at rehab today and stopped to talk to the exercise therapist and she asked how my legs felt and I thought for a minute and was like

"Uh, actually I kind of can't feel them right now and they're kinda wobbly and jellylike"

And she was like hey uhm. Sit down maybe??

I guess if you don't know that I frequently have dulled feeling/numbness in my legs due to my sciatica that might be a little alarming to hear lol

Yeah I've been kinda vague about it but my mom was in a pretty bad wreck at the beginning of June. Thankfully it wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been (the other driver was perfectly fine), but it did involve a brain injury and a 2 week stint in the icu (Worst week of sleep in my life) which was pretty scary for a while there. But today we played catch and crosswords, she's been talking for about a week, and her attitude is the same as before. Our biggest complaint right now is she's BORED.

I got designated the Descision Maker on day 1 and have been running off of spite since. So on top of the layoff/job hunting + figuring out where to live thing I've been dealing with insurance and disability and suddenly being a caretaker (even though shes in LTC atm) and it's been! Alot! But we've hit an upswing and the momentum has been picking up. Our next goals are to get her trach capped off and eventually removed and then get her steady enough to transfer to a wheelchair for short periods so we can LEAVE THE ROOM.

speaking of the rehab i work at, i’m also waiting to hear back on if i got into a medical internship there. i asked one of my supervisors yesterday and he said he doesn’t know when results come out, but he’s heard that i’m apparently a top contender. i am very much hoping that’s true
