F: THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA
F1: King Fernando II of Aragon, late 1480s
Fernando was a capable and courageous field commander, who was nearly captured or killed during a number of his campaigns against Granada. He is depicted here in an armour attributed to him and preserved in the Kunsthistorischesmuseum in Vienna. It is of late 15th-century Italian style but incorporates a number of Spanish details, such as the ‘fish-tail’ plackart covering the lower part of his breastplate.
F2: Queen Isabel I of Castile, late 1480s
During the first half of the war against Granada the energetic ‘queen-at-arms’ served as political advocate, war counsellor, and chief coordinator for the provision of troops, supplies, and money from Madrid. But to maintain the loyalty of their heterogeneous army it was necessary for the ‘Christian Monarchs’ to keep themselves visible to the troops, and during the later campaigns Isabel moved to the frontline camps. There she established both field kitchens and field hospitals for the wounded and sick, and came to be regarded by many of her soldiers as another Joan of Arc (a figure whom Isabel revered). Her appearance here is based on an image carved on a choir stall from Toledo Cathedral, where she is portrayed entering the conquered city of Gor in armour and carrying a mace of command.

Transmasculinity Throughout Time: Lou Alcott
Tumblr media
Yes, you heard me. There is substantial evidence that the author of Little Women was in fact a transgender man! He actually didn’t go by the name that Little Women was published under, with family and friends he would go by Lou, Louy, or LM. His children called him “papa” and “father” and his father, Bronson Alcott, called him his son. He said in 1882, “I am more than half persuaded that I am a man’s soul, put by some freak of nature into a woman’s body.” As a child, he said in a journal, “I don’t care much for girls things. People think I’m wild and queer.” He would pass as a man at masked parties for fun, and delighted in people’s reactions. For his entire life, he expressed this identification as a man, and the character of Jo in Little Women was in part a self insert character based on this. So why don’t we hear about him as a trans man? Well, it’s just not convenient for most people to believe that a beloved book about girls becoming women was written by a man.

Sculpture of a seated man with two dogs (one of the dogs is seen in the image). Dated (400-800 AD), from Veracruz, Mexico.
It could depict a warrior, as the man wears a full head mask that represents a (prairie) wolf.

it is genuinely and truly terrifying to watch trump and his apostles create a crisis and then "resolve" the crisis.
it is terrifying to watch right-wing media first say they love the tariffs, that "america is finally first again," that we don't need to be in a global economy. but then trump changes his mind. the media, in the next day or even hour - suddenly admits that the market was crashing, that we were in serious economic danger. but no worries because trump has saved us all! he's brought us back from the brink and stocks skyrocketed, something biden never did! trump's a hero! he loves us! he saved america!
i hate that the word "fascist" doesn't even seem to alarm them anymore. i hate that they treat it as a joke. i hate that others lift their noses and say triggered, libs? while lives fall apart. this is a man who has a religion behind him. this is a god-king. this is a man who has warped the soul of america, and they treat him as if he's just a goofy genius with a heart of gold.
within one hour of the tarriffs being announced, i already saw a commenter on instagram saying this is how we know he's playing chess, not checkers. but all the libs already sold their stocks, and i'm sat here laughing. i had to close my eyes.

I came across the word "swaggereth" in a book from 1622 last night and felt like it should be shared with the world.
"Hee swaggereth, as though the whole Towne were his owne."
(source: Adagia in Latine and English, Erasmus, 1622.)
