you see the thing about Xavier is that he is a guy that was groomed from birth to become the sovereign of a planet trying appear Normal and Average because current circumstances require him to be covert and hide in plain sight but it doesn’t really work. not just because he’s TOO remarkable and talented but also because he can’t fully rid himself of the temperament he developed within that kind of conditioning.
Like yea he has all the leadership capabilities he’s reliable and dependable and shoulders tons of responsibilities all while seeming aloof and composed because he was made to be that way. Because he was born to dominate and stand above others.
And while he has rejected the original path laid out for him, rejected the standards and values made to shape him into the king his father wanted him to be in favor of following his own moral compass, there’s still a small, small part of him that really is SUCH a prince lol
Like, you see it in the way he raises his chin and looks down at you when he about to do something bold.
And some of the emotions he was likely made to suppress because it would make him appear weak are poorly regulated and manifests as childish behavior that he even admits he just can’t help.
So he’s also kinda cheeky and petty and lowkey doesn’t like losing face. You tease or provoke him, or make a joke or prank at his expense and he can’t let it slide. He doesn’t yield. Or give way. And in the rare moments he DOES it’s just cause he’ll get you back later.
The cozy hoodies, the love of junk food, the books, the one bedroom apartment, and his penchant for taking on part time jobs in his free time as if he hasn’t generated mountains of wealth in the two centuries he’s been on earth coupled with that soft, gentle, almost whisper-like manner of speaking make him appear so modest and humble, as if his humility holds him back in so many ways,
And he ALMOST pulls it off. But then he’ll open his mouth and casually mention his 70k wanderer kill count. Or tell you that a century isn’t really that long. Or spend and donate money without even bothering to know the cost of things. He just can’t be normal or average he has no frame of reference for it.
His exceptionality gets him clocked too, the colleague he had when he was an evol police officer figured out his true identity. And Nero damn near figured out he was Lumiere in a weekend.
Xavier is genuinely a sincere and down to earth person; he’s good and trustworthy and earns the loyalty of the people around him without even trying to. Even though elements of his upbringing haven’t been entirely purged from his personality, he is still a former prince who refused to turn a blind eye to injustice, refused his birthright to do the right thing.
It makes for a pretty noble and charming character!
It also makes him funny as hell sometimes. Taking public transit like his ass can’t teleport? So unserious.

word count: 2.9k
warnings: mild language, happy relationship
a/n: fic #2!! hope yall enjoy and don't forget to like!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━★━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
quinn hughes had always rolled with the changes. from the days he spent watching hockey games from the sidelines, dreaming of being in the nhl, to getting drafted by the vancouver canucks, and now, stepping into the role of team captain. it felt like all those late nights, tough games, and moments of doubt had led him to this point.
but the one thing that made all of this feel even more meaningful? you being there right beside him.
you and quinn had been together for five years, through all the ups and downs that came with being in a relationship with someone who lived such a high-profile life. you’d been there for his breakout moments, when he nailed an insane assist or made a game-saving play. but you’d also been there when things didn’t go right—when the team wasn’t performing well, when he got hurt, or when the pressure of living up to expectations seemed like it might break him.
through all of it, you’d been the person he could lean on. and now, as he stood at the threshold of a new chapter—becoming captain of the canucks—it felt surreal, but it also felt like something he truly deserved.
────────────────────────────────────────────
it was a crisp morning when quinn was officially named captain of the vancouver canucks. the press conference was packed with reporters, cameras flashing, and everyone eager to hear what quinn had to say. the excitement in the air was contagious, but you could tell that quinn was feeling a bit of the pressure too. he stood there, looking calm on the outside, but you could see the nerves in his eyes. this was a big moment.
you sat in the front row, next to his family. jack, his brother, had flown in to support him, and you could see the pride in his eyes every time he looked at quinn. you weren’t the only one who was proud—everyone in the room could feel the weight of this moment. but even so, quinn’s demeanor was humble as ever. he didn’t seem to let the spotlight rattle him.
"thank you all for being here," the canucks' gm said from the podium. "it’s an honor to introduce the new captain of the vancouver canucks: quinn hughes."
the room erupted in applause. quinn gave a modest nod as he stepped up to the microphone. you could see how much this meant to him, but he kept his composure as always. he adjusted his tie, took a deep breath, and started speaking.
“it’s an honor to be here today,” quinn said, his voice strong, but there was a bit of a nervous edge to it. “being part of this organization has been incredible, and it means the world to me to have the chance to lead this team. but none of this happens without the people who’ve been there for me along the way—my teammates, my coaches, my family, and, of course, my girlfriend, y/n.”
your heart skipped a beat as quinn’s eyes found you in the crowd. the moment felt surreal, as all the eyes in the room turned to you. it wasn’t something you expected—being called out like that. but there he was, giving you that soft smile, the one you loved so much, as if to say, “I wouldn’t be here without you.”
you quickly wiped a tear from your eye, feeling all sorts of emotions hit at once. quinn wasn’t just a hockey player to you—he was your partner, your best friend, the person who made all the long nights worth it.
“y/n has been there for me through everything,” quinn continued. “She’s been my biggest supporter, my rock. I’m proud to share this moment with her.”
the room erupted in applause again, and you felt the weight of everyone’s eyes on you. it was overwhelming, but in the best way. quinn’s words made everything feel like it was meant to be.
after the press conference ended, reporters started to trickle out, but quinn didn’t rush. he made his way to you, his family following behind, and you met him halfway.
"hey," quinn said, his voice low, as he wrapped you in a hug. "thank you for always being here. for everything."
you hugged him tight, your heart full. “you deserve this, quinn. I’m so proud of you.”
he pulled away, looking into your eyes. “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
you both stood there for a moment, away from the chaos, just the two of you. no words were needed. you both knew this was just the beginning of something huge.
────────────────────────────────────────────
the next few weeks flew by in a whirlwind of excitement and adjustment. quinn was officially the captain now, and it came with a lot more responsibility. he was taking on extra meetings, spending more time at the rink, and handling pressure that he’d never had to before. but through it all, he kept his calm. he took the responsibility seriously, but he didn’t let it consume him.
you saw the subtle changes in him—he was more focused, more aware of how his actions affected the team. he was always the first one on the ice, pushing the younger players to work hard. but he also made sure to check in with everyone, making sure the guys knew they had his back. he wasn’t just the captain on paper—he was earning the respect of his teammates every day.
at home, it wasn’t much different. after a tough game, where the canucks had lost in overtime, you found quinn sitting on the couch, staring out the window. the city lights below twinkled, but he seemed lost in thought.
“rough game?” you asked, walking over and sitting beside him.
quinn let out a long breath, rubbing his temples. “yeah, we just couldn’t get it together. I made that last pass, and I messed it up.”
you gently squeezed his hand. “you can’t win them all, quinn. you’ve been killing it all season. one mistake doesn’t change that.”
he gave you a small smile, but you could tell he was still frustrated. “I just hate feeling like I let everyone down. I’m supposed to be the leader.”
“you’re doing great,” you reassured him. “nobody expects you to be perfect. your team knows you’re doing everything you can, and they look up to you for it.”
quinn looked at you, his eyes softening. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, y/n. you make everything easier.”
you grinned and gave his hand a soft squeeze. “I’m always gonna be here, quinn. don’t ever forget that.”
he pulled you into a tight hug, and for a while, that was all you needed. just to be there together, away from everything. the world outside could wait.
────────────────────────────────────────────
as the season wore on, quinn settled into the role of captain. the canucks started clicking as a team, and with quinn leading the charge, their play was getting better and better. he seemed to grow more comfortable with each game, more confident in his leadership abilities. but despite the growing success, he stayed grounded. he was still the same quinn you’d known from the beginning—humble, hardworking, and always ready to laugh at the little things.
one night, after a huge win, quinn and the team went out to celebrate. you stood at the back of the room, watching him interact with his teammates, joking around and laughing. he looked like a natural leader, fitting perfectly into this new role. but it was when his eyes found yours across the room that your heart skipped a beat. you could see the pride in his gaze, the quiet appreciation that you were there, supporting him every step of the way.
later that night, when most of the team had left, quinn pulled you aside in the quiet of the hallway. he looked at you with a mix of exhaustion and contentment.
“you’ve been with me through everything,” he said quietly, taking both your hands in his. “I couldn’t have done this without you. I’m so thankful for you, y/n.”
you smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair behind his ear. “I’m proud of you, quinn. you’ve earned this.”
quinn stepped closer and pulled you into a kiss—gentle, full of meaning, and everything you’d ever needed. the world outside seemed to disappear as he kissed you, and for a few moments, it was just the two of you. the pressure, the expectations, the challenges—they didn’t matter. you were together, and that was enough.
and as the season continued, you both knew that this was only the beginning. quinn’s leadership was just taking shape, and with you by his side, there was nothing he couldn’t face. the road ahead was full of possibilities, and you’d be there with him every step of the way.

Masterlist
“Baby come here, your jacket’s crooked,” Caitlyn peeks down at her chest before stepping towards you. Your fingers grab the collar of her sleek navy blue blazer, adjusting, and folding it down neatly. Fixing the knot of her tie and patting down her torso to even out any wrinkles.
While your hands work, her blue eye stares. She watches as you fix her suit, one that she had gotten tailored to fit her lengthy form perfectly. It hugged her curves and defined her slim waist, and the Kiramman crest was stitched on the cuffs of her sleeves and the folds of her jacket. The sight caused a buckle in your knees and your teeth to nip your bottom lip. Once you’ve finished helping her, your gaze darts up, meeting hers.
You look deeply into her uninjured eye. Her other is behind a soft eyepatch protecting the wound. She leans in, your palms still on her chest as her lips meet with yours, glossy and soft.
After another peck, you both pull away. A comfortable silence between you two as you stare at each other’s cleaned up form. Tonight, her and her father were hosting a gala. Not their usual ones filled with champagne and rich laughter of wealthy aristocrats.
No. Tonight, Caitlyn is officially announcing her role as head of the Kiramman name. Taking up the responsibility of her mother's leadership role, but not her seat on the council.
It has been a few months since the battle with Noxus. Her scars are still healing. You look over every cut and scarred skin along her face, standing higher on your toes to place a soft peck on each mark.
She closes her eye, hands on your waist to balance you, sighing into your soothing touches.
You wore only your best dress, one that matched Caitlyn’s. Strapless, yet modest. Neck and wrists covered in jewelry, gifts from your loving girlfriend who spoils you like a Goddess.
“You’re stunning as always,” she says, soft enough for only you to hear, even though you both were secluded in the privacy of her room in the Kiramman manor. “And you are… distracted, my love. Can’t even fix your own suit?” You tease. “Apologies, darling, you know I hate going to these galas.”
You raise your hand to hold her cheek, and the tip of your thumb gently caresses the bottom seam of her eyepatch.
The tall woman taps her fingers nervously on the sides of your hips, feeling the fancy pattern woven into the corset part of your elegant gown.
"Tonight is about you. Everyone is here to celebrate our victory against Noxus..." You press your forhead to hers while your hands hold onto her fidgeting ones, hoping it'll calm her nerves. "To acknowledge your bravery and heroism, Caitlyn."
Her glare that was once on her shoes rose to meet yours, bouncing between both of your eyes, trying to figure out which orb to focus on more.
For what feel like a long moment, yet you wouldn't mind staying like that forever, you eventually give her one passionate kiss before parting. You look towards a clock hanging on her wall. "We should go before your father gets overwhelmed, entertaining the guests on his own."
She flashes a smile, one where her tooth gap shows. A quick nod to her head before interlinking her arm with yours, guiding you to the event wing of the manor.
Upon arriving, the space was piled with Piltover and Zaunite civilians, enjoying the sweet melody of a pianist playing on an expensive piano. All guests enjoy champagne while conversing amongst each other.
You find Tobias, Caitlyn's father, who was mid conversation with a group of other weathy men.
He spots you both approaching, and you immediately greet him with a polite gesture, a hug with a kiss to his bearded cheek. A gesture that won the hearts of her parents when they first met you.
Caitlyn does the same to her father. "Yes, yes, this is my daughter, Caitlyn," he pulls her closer to introduce her to these seemingly powerful looking businessmen. "Ah, the Sheriff, your father speaks very well of you. Along with the rest of Piltover. We were wondering if you'd be interested-."
You nodded off, whispering to your navy-haired partner quickly that you grab some drinks while they talk about some deal you had no business with.
A table of beverages and gourmet foods is where you pondered off to. You grab a couple of glasses of champagne for yourself and Caitlyn. Taking a few sips of the light colored liquid, you hear a few mutters just a bit further down the table.
Taking the glass away from your lips to peer at the small group.
Women, maybe around your age, all giggling and blushing in their gala dresses. Doe-eyeing someone across the room. You paid no mind till you heard one of them say, "Gods, she's so handsome."
The other two chuckle with their hands hovering over their mouths. "Piltover's finest war hero," she bites her lips, seems to be glancing up and down from a distance. "I heard she's the Sheriff now-" one lady interrupts her, "Oh, she can come arrest me."
Steam practically fumed out your ears. With the glasses still in your hands, you storm over to the group.
Right behind them, you put on your best fraudulent smile that you needed to blind them with. Fixing your posture into a confident demeanor that made you seem clueless, yet possessive.
You clear your throat, getting the attention of the woman. "Oh, my wife? Yes, she's very hot. Thanks for pointing that out."
Oh, they saw a physical depiction of your emotions floating behind you. A dark, angry spirit ready to pounce on them as you smiled with squinted eyes. They embarrassingly and fearfully shuffled away from you, disappearing into the crowd of guests.
You blow a loose strand of hair from your face. Content with the reactions you received from them.
"Wife, huh? Last I checked, we were just girlfriends," You looked behind you and turned in the direction where your gorgeous navy suited, tall lover stood. You look off to the side to huff a small chuckle before looking back at her.
"We better fix that. I want a ring right now, or else I'll have to duel those women for you," you tease, handing her the glass of champagne you had grabbed just for her.
She takes a sip before lowering it down. Her free hand came up to swirl a finger around the tip of the glass. "There wouldn't be any competition," her stare leaves the glass in her hand and towards you where she admired the face she's fallen in love with, yours.
She steps to your side, reaching a hand to hold the small of your back, pulling you in closer.
"Well then, what would this pretty lady want for a ring? Diamonds? A custom engraving?"
You were stunned, yet falling head over heels once again, like you've done many times before when it came to Caitlyn and her sweet words, that knew how to make your heart race in a second.
"Anything, as long as it comes with you forever," you both looked disgustingly cute to the naked eye. Faces so close your noses nuzzled together, lips barely grazing.
In one swift movement, Caitlyn tips you over plants a long, passionate kiss to the delicious pads of your mouth. One of your legs flew up as she kissed you. Your glasses clank together when they make contact.
You knew you had Caitlyn Kiramman from the start. She was in love with you and needed nobody else, but you by her side. Forever, till death do you part.

ᯓ★ CLAN LEADER! SUGURU who’d realised that perhaps dictating and eradicating humanity to his liking may not have been his ultimate end goal. After all, it was two citizens out of the herd who’d delivered the divine craftsmanship better known as his wife.
Following a rather hectic day, the finale included his lover caged beneath his heaving, burly figure after a session of torrid intercourse dwindling to intimate devotion.
It was leaning towards extremely late, the sphere responsible for Icarus’ tragedy having traded with its lunar counterpart. Buoyant indigo had affectionately suffocated apricot gradients long ago; the dramatic hue was more than prepared to disperse its presence across the nation, persuading cheeky glints to accompany and beautify its empty canopy, which had diffused entirely the prior traces of daytime.
Her gentle touch caressed his fair complexion, bared from his tasteful, monk-resembling outfit threaded with ornate patterns, strewn off to one side, his sumptuous appearance unravelling in sync with Tokyo’s clockwork – hours elapsing as he promulgated his objectives and widened the number of his enthusiasts.
ᯓ★ CLAN LEADER! SUGURU would have once thought it was simply pathetic to dismantle his core beliefs for any reason, especially for sickly romance with a citizen wielding an increment of sorcery and unbothered to partake in jujutsu’s purpose to serve a population he referred to as the same animal some believed they’d evolved from.
“Missed you…” He mumbled a deflated admission, his slender sight obscured by escaped wisps from his noir mane, briefly parting from her pupils, which were deluged with affection and prepared to remedy his fatigue with her personality, resembling a paradisiacal destination.
The declaration itself almost passed unnoticed had it not been euphonious to the ear. Her trembling fingers successfully sought purchase around his jaw, caressing the defined bone structure, a silent confession that she yearned beyond consuming just his physicality but rather his entire being, ardent convictions and all.
She prettily whimpered, wordlessly pleading for another finger to pledge its allegiance to her heavenly body as his index finger had been expertly pummelling her sensitive walls.
Suguru acknowledged the cruelty of his gesture, his thick middle finger prodded at her entrance, barely tipping into the hole that clenched in excitement at the possibility of leeching onto more leverage – but the man intentionally disregarded the concept of mercy concerning sexual pleasure, as of now anyway.
On the other hand, Y/n bucked her hips at the modest dip into the heated opening, unsuccessful in reigning another finger in.
He leaned his head further down whilst simpering at her desperation, witnessing greed merge to insanity before using a rough force to annex her wriggling hips to the mattress once more, the plush area adorned with a stampede of brutal fingerprints after visiting deific landmarks across her form.
ᯓ★ CLAN LEADER! SUGURU savoured the entrancing embodiment of purity sprawled beneath him, flushed with innocent femininity as beguiling roses pricked beneath her clammy flesh to convey a subtle dust of rouge on top whilst she lightly panted. The combination of their perspiration, drenching their entangled figures, strengthened the notion of them being one unit, a team.
His hooded eyes, eclipsed with compulsive lechery, momentarily glanced at the floor decorated with his opulent robe. The hefty fabric, symbolic of leadership, was paired with her dainty panties featuring picot trim and a satin bow carelessly tossed atop. He was unable to refrain from savouring the stark contrast between the garments that imitated their dynamic immaculately.
“Please…” She began, her defined brows furrowed as the relentlessness of his mischievous digit stilled, and pulled out except the tip, the tallest visitor still yet to implore further beyond the fleshy partition.
“Please, what?” He teasingly quizzed, innocence feigned yet conscious of her covet for a particular one of his additions.
“Please, Sugu,” She briefly paused as he permitted a few millimetres of his index finger to slip back in, the petty invasion more than enough to warrant an aching supplication. “Add another, God, please give me more.”.
Her smooth palms, warm and reassuring, resided atop his broad shoulders. An attempt on her behalf to steady her whines as his index and middle finger succumbed by deeply occupying her pulsating cunt, her swollen clit’s complaint of desertion rectified with erratic swirls courtesy of his rough thumb.
“You ask so nicely,” He murmured as she inhaled his cologne, weakened by the day’s timestamps but strengthened by the enticing musk of having seized his carnal yearn; his aroma integrated far beneath her muscled casing and disrupting the flow within her interior, all fundamental units of her body, each passing cell organised by speciality, was stamped with an eternal smidgen of his existence that no type of intervention could retrieve it.
She basked in his claim over her, the diabolic sounds he was able to bring forth when in tune with her; his confidence and pride in attaining knowledge about such pried her gaze away out of shyness. Suguru, however, refused, forcing her attention back onto him, more specifically on his ministrations.
“Don’t look away when you asked for this,” He scolded, though without bite, smirk fuelled by zealous intent as she slightly spasmed when he began the classic scissoring motion, an action that never fulfilled her quest unless committed by him.
ᯓ★ CLAN LEADER! SUGURU momentarily stilled whilst evaluating his upcoming words, slowly permitting his forehead to lay against hers, involuntarily forcing her to strain up slightly to truly register his expression.
"I’ve forgiven humanity,” He breathed, thumbing over her chin as thin lips ghosted over hers that had been twitching, overall facial expression scrunching at the general intensity behind his customised devotion towards their love.
Her head is thrown back, rustling her own tresses not only at his confession but the particular curl of his fingers teasingly brushing a spot he’d memorised as a goldmine, more fervour added, continuing to prod that specific spot.
A weightless moan failed to permeate and relieve the budding tension cramming her joints, the vacancy in her lungs having spoken more than vocabulary itself.
His inky irises fixated on the column supporting her winsome visage, currently struck with fluster following his vulnerable but earnest revelation. Fixated on sloppily smooching pre-engraved blemishes of blossomed violet until reaching her collarbone, he scarcely towed his tongue into the pit between both probing bones as if he were delving into a sacred whirlpool arcing with boundless lust.
She drew him up to her intrigued eyes once more, parting his mouth from her dewy skin.
Sincerity coerced her plush lips upwards before struggling to muse a soft “Is that so?”.
Suguru would have never entertained the possibility, convinced that his true calling was to act on behalf of God, to be the right-hand assistant and aide of an entity beloved by many, although responsible for crafting the exact useless specimens he’d grown to detest - until now.
“Why the sudden toleration of them?” Not that she, his love, the woman who had decided with ease to advocate for his controversial notions, wasn’t convinced - but the alternation in attitudes so suddenly?
Suguru tutted, “Not toleration, Love,” he nudged his sharp nose against her sweaty temple, enunciating the final word of his elongated reminder with prominence - thick pads continuously swabbing against that spot, which minimised the distance to her undoing. “Forgiveness.”
Her sopping cunt served multiple purposes – tonight being a habitat meant for atonement, whereby the intrusion of his fingers carved with nanoscopic paths purged with fiendish slaughter was relieved of such corruptness when knuckles deep.
When he calculatedly applied extra pressure to the swollen bud, she keened, instantly arching upwards, her round breasts with perked nipples encapsulated with dried saliva, faintly mushed against his own splotchy chest.
Silk pillows beneath her head persuade her tipped head to relish in the luxury supporting her skull, the satin against her tousled hair, running away from the new sensory awakening as the suffocating coil blurred her sight yet desperate for more it; curled toes roughly dragging at the fitted sheet, barely clinging to the temporary cotton humps produced by the action.
“Okay - f-fuck m’ so close,” She pouted, and he soothed her down with a faint peck to her jugular, speed quickening whilst his pace of words contradicted his body, sensual expressions consistent of mellow encouragement greeted with an erotic cry regarding the arrival of her release alerting him as if triggering clench and lacy web globing his digits wasn’t telling which he shamelessly admired with genuine adore afterwards – sticky fluid a refresher for his parched tastebuds, no more a cavern of drought when the delicacy was suckled off his fingers and leisurely enjoyed by his curled tongue.
“So good, sweetheart, you did so well and all for me.” He appeared somewhat bashful.
Suguru uttered vulgarities far too crude to publicise under the incandesce audience currently catering to the other half of the globe’s domain, but romantic and poetry-esque when ushering her to a sensual demise, endeared the silver observant’s sultry liquification mimicking lingerie when reflective onto her peeking skin not blockaded by Geto’s burly figure above.
Her breathing staggered, lack of chatter due to balancing the aftermath and dawned realisation of exposed vulnerability, which coaxed her to tug him flush to her chest.
“Don’t be shy again.” He cooed, to which she sheepishly looked away before finally regaining a sense of his prior comments.
“Forgiveness, hm?” She suddenly but lightly voiced with a silvery chuckle, tracing a mere line of her feathery touch atop the sharp bridge of his nose.
Genuine forgiveness, a trait acknowledged by God as only attainable by true believers, living with the reassurance that the earth’s current status of lethargic collapse into dystopia was not its final destination, but rather a better one awaited after.
ᯓ★ CLAN LEADER! SUGURU was a man who believed he had been entwined with strings related to the owner of all universes and beyond; thus, forgiveness being pre-manufactured in his heart was a given, as well as benevolence and so on – without those basic yet necessary traits he was practically on the same level as those who viewed him higher than themselves, a man perched atop the catastrophe known as lost humanity.
He examined her facial expression, indulging in the warmth and comfort her bewitching features offered before vocalising such. Letting those he deemed burdensome for sorcerers absorb his attention when his doting wife was right in front of him...how foolish of a move for a man of his calibre.
His motives were still intact, as was his conceptualisation of residents' lacklustre of cursed energy. But, the division of his priorities should not have been equal; the compartment dedicated to the woman, nothing less than benevolent and sympathetic to his cause, should have been heeded miles ahead of anything else.
“I’ve forgiven humanity,” he restated, and a breathless chuckle followed.
“Out of my love for you.”.

↓↓DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED VEILGUARD + Click for full res.
Harding’s mother knew her daughter's work had taken her far and wide, and she had connected with many different people. But never did she ever imagined so many would come.
It was a stunning sight. In robes and armour, in scarlet and blue and gold and green, they had journeyed across all of Thedas to their sleepy little hamlet. They had filled the humble inns and the surrounding fields, full of spring heather, transformed into colourful campsites. They had come, with gold jewellery and shining armour, they had come with holes in their shoes and worn-out leathers, they had come and sat side by side. To honour her sacrifice and celebrate her memory. She had seen then how her daughter had known the whole world, and in return, the whole world had loved her—the hero of the final blight, the hero from Ferelden.
(click for a lot more detail) ↓
Her home away from home—the Veilguard—had arrived first and stayed the longest, some had helped set up, others had gone about fixing old roofs, helping the farmers repair their equipment, planting gardens, bringing ingredients from all over and cooking large meals, and talking to her and her husband about all Lace had done.
Then more and more started arriving, celebrated for three days and three nights. Many Harding’s mother had not known at all—Tevinter civilians, assassins from Antiva, fortune seekers, and seers from Rivain. There had been Elves with beautiful, delicate tattoos from far-off northern forests, Grey Wardens in uniforms so different from what she had known, Dwarves dressed in peculiar garb who had not stayed long, and Nevarran scholars with dark jewellery, black robes, and warm, generous dispositions.
And old friends too.
Commander Cullen, Lily Trevelyan, and their young family had brought fruit and fruit seeds from their small farm in the valley over. The Iron Bull—the tallest Qunari Harding’s mother had ever seen, and the kindest and most respectful—he and his Chargers had brought crates of honey mead, before starting up a game of sport with the village children. Soon after, they had been joined by Sera, Lace’s fellow archer, who had offered to let each child try out her bow. Watched by Dorian, who had soon grown bored and returned to the garden to Neve, whom he had walked around and introduced to old friends.
Josephine had arrived late, flushed, and emotional without a hair out of place, but had made up for it by immediately taking charge of herding the crowds this way and that. The Herald, Lavellan, had sat outside in the sun watching her young daughter play in the grass, frail and weakened by what the mark had left—and was still taking. Yet she had spoken to every person who had passed by. Many faces had wandered through to sit beside her and speak. In particular, Lady Cassandra—silver lines of hair mixed with her black—had sat with her the longest. Both had been stricken with the loss and the burden of leadership, a hole in each of their hearts for the knowledge that Harding had died dressed as an Inquisition Scout.
Harding’s mother had never seen the Divine up close, but had heard a great deal about her from Lace. Her strength as a spellsword, quick wit and sharp mind had made her an intimidating idea. Yet, she had come dressed in simple robes—perfectly tailored and beautiful, but simple. With just a cape and a modest headdress. No guards. If you hadn’t known who she was, you would have been forgiven for mistaking her as a high-ranking Circle mage—nothing more. She had arrived with no great entrance, heading immediately to her and her husband. She had sat with them for an hour, as the sun had glistened in a golden afternoon light, before walking with them to the small chantry that sat in the centre of the village. After that, she had gone to old friends, sitting on a wooden bench beneath the cherry tree, speaking with a rugged, rough-looking man with a black beard streaked with grey and looking like he had lived a thousand lifetimes—a complete contrast to her well-kept, elegant appearance.
As the friends and family had gathered for the formal ceremony, Vivienne, had performed the Chantry rites. Afterwards, a few people had taken turns to speak. The Herald, then Rook—their young leader of the Veilguard—before the dragon hunter, tall and stoic, and so young, who had been so blunt and informal it had been almost funny. The days spent in Harding’s home with her mother had softened Taash’s heartbreak just enough.
The Inquisition Spymaster and the Witch of the Wilds had made an odd pairing as they had stood away from the rest, beneath the oak tree on the hill. They had stood so close you might have mistaken them as sisters—or perhaps simply two people who had experienced too much together. Later, as the sun had begun to set, they had been joined by another. A man, around the same age, but his face had been in shadow. He had worn simple travelling robes, and a cloak with his hood up, a strawberry blond beard speckled with silver, and a sword at his side. The three had stood informally in a line looking down at the gathering. Later, in the evening, as guests had begun to wander off for rest, the man—brown eyes, heavy yet still shining—had asked to speak to Harding’s mother and her husband privately, to pay his respects to a “Hero from Ferelden.”
(if there is anyone I forgot to mention, they were also there, what do you think they were doing?) I had this idea for months but could only finish it now. I hate that it feels like it was meant to be harding, the sacrifice.

🪞✶⋆.˚🧠Zodiac Signs with BOTH Beauty & Intelligence🧠✶⋆.˚🪞

HOW TO USE THIS POST: Apply this to your Sun, Moon, Rising or Chart Ruler.
DISCLAIMER: In no way am I implying that the rest of the zodiac signs are ugly & dumb! This post is for entertainment purposes ONLY and to highlight the strengths of these particular Zodiac Archetypes.
First of all, in traditional astrology, the qualities of beauty & intelligence are linked to specific planets.
1) Venus is the significator of beauty, desire, and harmony.
2) Mercury: forethought, intelligence, practical wisdom, education, reason & knowledge.
The zodiac signs ruled or dignified by these planets (Venus & Mercury), can be considered as possessing a potential for both beauty & intelligence!
♊︎ GEMINI ♊︎
Ruled by Mercury (intellect, language, learning). You are known for being articulate, quick, verbal & mentally agile.
Your sharp thinking IS your charisma, and you express your beauty through body language, facial expressions, spontaneity, voice. Plus, your intelligence is responsive & socially functional = there’s fluency in your ideas.
• Bonatti notes that Geminis often have beautiful voices (strong communicators both in sound & structure.)
♍︎ VIRGO ♍︎
Ruled by Mercury, your strengths are: analytical precision, discernment & critical thinking.
Your beauty is clean, functional, modest, symmetrical, calculated. Venus is uncomfortable in this sign cause of that dang PERFECTIONISM! But in the long run, it translates as curating every detail of your appearance.
• Bonatti also credits Virgos with a beautiful voice! Your intellect & efficiency manifests as an air of competence that is *extremely* attractive to others (mainly because it’s not performative).
♎︎ LIBRA ♎︎
Ruled by Venus (beauty, harmony, social appeal), but also considered rational (air sign).
Beauty is: your intellect, your social intelligence, how you think, speak & present yourself. There’s definitely a stronger ‘physical beauty’ component here. Your beauty is BOTH visual (Venus) & intellectual (Air element).
• Your intellectual traits lean toward ethical reasoning, diplomacy & measured speech.
♉︎ TAURUS ♉︎

Between Faith and Flesh Grotesquerie x Midnight Mass
wc: 2.8k a/n: incase it was unclear, this is a little cross-over between Grotesquerie x Midnight Mass while also being an Actor!AU. Might be a lil confusing but wanted to make something new lol
Traveler M.List
ˏ⸉ˋ‿̩͙‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˏ⸉ˋ‿̩͙‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˏ⸉ˋ‿̩͙‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙.·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .‿̩̥̩‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˊ⸊ˎ‿̩̥̩‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˊ⸊ˎ‿̩̥̩‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˊ⸊ˎ
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything....James 1:2-4."
The familiar warmth of the chapel enveloped you as you delivered the final lines of your morning homily, your voice calm yet resonant in the quiet space.
Sunlight filtered through the modest stained-glass windows, casting soft hues of gold and amber across the worn pews where Crockett Island's tight-knit congregation sat.
The scent of salt and damp wood lingered faintly in the air—a reminder of the sea just beyond the church walls.
Your gaze swept across the group, catching the faces you had come to know so well over the past year.
The mayor's daughter Leeza Scarborough sat in the front row, wide eyes attentive on you as she folded her hands neatly in her lap.
Even Sheriff Hassan stood near the back as his son Ali sat near him listening intently, despite knowing how outdated many were to his Islamic faith.
These people, they had become your family in a way—this island, with all its quiet mysteries, had grown on you.
You closed your sermon with a passage on resilience, something that had always resonated with you—like how faith, similar to the sea surrounding them, could be both steady and tumultuous.
"We find strength not in the absence of struggle, but in how we rise after the waves pull us under." Your words hung in the air for a moment, met with soft nods and murmurs of agreement from the congregation.
"Let us pray," you began, your hands resting gently on the altar.
As you spoke your thoughts wandered briefly, like they often did, to Riley Flynn—a name you had known only through the accident that had first led you here.
His absence was a constant echo in the small populace community, felt even when it wasn't spoken aloud.
As the congregation stood to leave, you lingered near the altar to exchange kind words with those who came up to you.
A soft word here, a warm touch on the shoulder there—each gesture felt like a testament to how far you'd come.
This role, unexpected as it was, had become more than just a position. It was your calling.
"You've really made a place for yourself here," Anne said quietly, her expression sincere as she approached.
"Thank you Mrs. Flynn," you replied, offering her a gentle smile. "Means a lot coming from you."
And it did. Especially knowing how much of the weight of her son's sins pressed on her mind.
It still surprised you sometimes how much the town had accepted you. Even when being the first ordained woman pastor—something that should have sparked outrage, especially in a small traditional community—the people had welcomed you with open arms.
Or at least most of them had.
The familiar sound of heels clicking sharply against the stone floor caught your attention.
Bev Keane.
She always had an aura of cold disapproval, her gaze flickering over you with barely concealed distaste.
"Another lovely service I'm sure," she said, compliment laced with her usual acidity. Her lips pressed into a thin line as she continued, "But I wonder if perhaps next time you might include more...traditional teachings? Some of the congregation finds your progressive messages a bit, well, out of step."
Her words stung, but you kept your expression calm refusing to rise to her bait.
Bev had never approved of your leadership from the start—the idea of a woman in your position, however temporary, was something she barely tolerates.
With every sermon you gave, every interaction with the townsfolk that went well, her bitterness seemed to deepen.
"I'll take your suggestion under consideration," you kept your tone firm. There was no point in arguing with Bev directly—it would only lead to more confrontation.
One thing you had long since learned about Bev's resistance was that it was more about control than doctrine.
She craved the power that came with influence over the church, and your very presence threatened that.
Bev's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Of course. Well I'll leave you to clean up. God knows there's always work to be done."
With a stiff nod she turned on her heel and marched away, her presence lingering even after she disappeared through the doors.
As the last of the congregation departed, the chapel fell into a serene silence once again.
You exhaled softly, feeling the weight of the morning settle on your shoulders.
Despite the support of the community, moments like these reminded you of how precarious your position was.
You knew she was waiting for any excuse to discredit you—an outsider who had stepped into a role she believed was hers by right.
Busying yourself by tidying up, your hands smooth the fabric of the altar cloth as you cleared the space for the next service.
The chapel, now empty, felt both peaceful and solemn.
It was in these quiet moments that you often found yourself reflecting on the journey that had brought you here—from your small-town upbringing, to your studies, to this remote island where you now stood as the first ordained woman pastor.
The soft chime of your phone broke the stillness. Pulling the device from your pocket, you faintly smile at the name on the screen. Nick.
The message was short but familiar—a photo of him post-workout, his face flushed with exertion with a cheeky grin plastered across his face.
Nick: Finishing up my workout. Just wanted to give you an update :)
Your could feel the warmth creeping up your neck.
You weren't sure why you were smiling so much—after all, it was just Nick being...Nick. Friendly, teasing, always with that infectious charm.
But somehow, the way your eyes lingered on the photo for a beat too long made you acutely aware of something deeper. Something you weren't sure you should be feeling.
Shaking your head slightly, you reply back.
____: Glad to see you're keeping busy!
You hit send, already imagining the smirk he'd have seeing your response.
As soon you tuck away your phone, intent on finishing the cleanup, another buzz came almost immediately.
Nick: Hope you weren't doing anything unholy with that picture of me ;)
The heat had spread to your face and a startled laugh slipped past your lips.
You quickly type back.
____: Behave Nicholas. I'm a pastor remember?
You knew he was just being playful, but it didn't stop the way your heart skipped slightly at the implications.
Unholy. The word reverberated in your mind longer than it should have.
Before you could dwell too much on it, another text came through.
Nick: Sure sure I believe you ;) Anyways got a surprise for you
Your fingers hesitated over the keyboard, curiosity piqued.
____: A surprise? What kind?
Nick: You'll see. Just finished that project I told you about. Check your email when you get home. And no peeking. You promised
The reminder made you chuckle. ____: Fine fine I'll wait. It better be good especially with all this mystery!
You added a playful emoji at the end, the excitement clear in your message.
His response was immediate, and you could practically hear his voice.
Nick: Oh it's good. Don't worry I know you're going to love it.
You smiled at the screen, shaking your head at his confidence. Of course he'd know.
The faint echo of your steps on the wooden floor snapped you back to the present, making your thoughts drift back to his arrival, how it had all begun.
It was almost a year at the time when Father Pruitt had left on his pilgrimage, leaving you in charge of the church—a transition you hadn't anticipated but had eventually embraced.
And just as you were starting to find your footing, Nicholas Chaves had appeared, adding a new dynamic you hadn't expected.
Before he arrived to Crockett Island, you recall the unexpected email you received: a simple inquiry from the actor who was looking to deepen his understanding of priesthood for an upcoming role.
He wanted to shadow someone in the clergy, someone who could give him an authentic insight into the life of a pastor.
And he'd heard about your rather unique position on the island...
You of course were slightly taken aback by his openness and easy way he'd talked about his work.
It wasn't every day someone like Nick came knocking, but you had agreed mainly from intrigue of the whole situation.
Even when Bev became immediately suspicious of him—practically interrogating him when he first arrived—the rest of the town welcomed him warmly, charmed by his easygoing nature.
"Another distraction," she'd muttered once when Nick had offered to help you carry boxes of hymnals inside one time. "This is a church not a social club."
Her words always came with that same bitter edge, though by now you'd learned to brush them off.
He stayed in Father Pruitt's old house with you during that time in one of the spare rooms.
As you finished locking up and made your way toward the small home, your thoughts drifted back to him.
You never planned on feeling so affected by him. Yes he was charming, but it was more than that—there was something about him that drew you in even when you tried to resist it.
And it wasn't just his looks—though you couldn't deny the way your breath occasionally caught when he smiled at you in that boyish way of his.
No. It was his presence. The way he carried himself—confident yet curious, never shying away from asking questions about your work and sermons, about faith itself.
He was genuinely interested, even if he wasn't fully immersed in it like you were.
In all, conversations with Nick were easy; late-night talks often ended up stretching longer than intended as you discussed everything from theology to the little absurdities of life.
And yet despite the growing comfort, there had always been a tension simmering beneath the surface.
The first time you felt the it was when he'd sat in on one of your late-night study sessions, helping you prep for Sunday Mass.
His quiet attentiveness as he listened to you practice, his casual lean against the doorway as he watched with a smile tugging at his lips.
Now, as you made your way up the steps, you wondered what this surprise of Nick's could be.
You pushed the front door open, the familiar scent of wood and old books greeting you.
It was home now—at least for the time being. Letting out a sigh, you set your bag down and make your way to the bedroom.
Changing your robes and veil into a more comfortable sleepwear, you grab your laptop and settle into bed.
There in your inbox, you find a sent email from him.
Three video files, each with a timestamp of about an 50 minutes. The subject line read simply: For You.
You frowned in confusion but quickly clicked on the first one. The video loaded, and as it played, the familiar face of Niecy Nash popped up on the screen.
A soft laugh escaped you—a TV show? It wasn't what you were expecting, but you were intrigued.
As the episode unfolded, you were drawn into the storyline.
It was refreshing actually, seeing a concept that brushed against the edges of a religion that's intertwined with your own daily life.
By the second episode you were completely hooked. You'd grown attached to the characters, loving the way they navigated this warped world of morality and sin.
The storyline itself was intense and unpredictable in how it blended the very faith you preached into something so viscerally raw.
But then your heart leapt a little as Nick—or rather, Father Charlie finally appeared on screen.
You smiled, unable to resist snapping a picture of the scene and sending it to him with a simple teasing text.
____: Look who just showed up on my screen.
Your phone buzzed almost instantly, but you ignored it.
You were too caught up in watching him; your eyes tracing the way he moved, the way his expression shifted with every word.
It was surreal watching him play a priest when just a few weeks ago, he had been standing beside you in the church helping with the altar cloths.
Every close-up of his face had your heart doing an odd little flip. You'd shared conversations with that face, shared jokes and moments of comfort.
The goofy smile on your lips was hard to suppress as you watched him banter with Sister Megan, the two having a light giggle over stolen fries.
You couldn't help but draw parallels between the man on the screen and the man you had grown close to—the actor who had been nothing but kind, thoughtful, and, admittedly, a little flirtatious.
And then the scene change.
The camera panned across a dimly lit, sparsely furnished room. Your eyes narrowed, focusing in on the figure sitting at the edge of a bed.
It was Father Charlie—his broad, bare back flexing as he sat, hunched slightly. The room was silent except for his soft labored breathing.
You watch with growing confusion as his breathing deepens.
A soft sound escapes him—a low moan—and suddenly, the atmosphere in the room shifts entirely.
Your eyes widened upon realizing what you were seeing. Father Charlie is pleasuring himself.
The sounds of his quiet sighs fill the room, and you freeze as you try to process what you're watching.
The camera caught it all: the soft sighs, the slow measured pace of his hand, the quiet moans that grew more strained with every movement.
You felt your breath hitch, heat creeping up your neck as you watched too stunned to look away.
You know it's just a show—it's just acting—but seeing Nick, someone you know, in such an intimate and vulnerable moment...it shakes you.
Your body feels hot, heart pounding as Father Charlie quickens his pace, his breath becoming more erratic, moans growing louder.
A strange warmth unfurled in your chest that you immediately tried to suppress.
It felt wrong to watch this—wrong to feel anything about it.
Your fingers tremble as you reach for your laptop, the desire to pause or stop the episode battling with the inexplicable pull to keep watching.
And then it changed again.
The camera cuts to him standing at a basin, his back to the facing you once again, the muscles in his back flexing under the low light.
You blink rapidly as he begins to wash his hands, the sound of the water almost deafening in the silence.
That's when you notice it—the chaps. He's wearing bottomless chaps, the skin of his thighs and backside completely bare.
"Sweet baby Jesus," you whisper, hands shaking as you press a hand to your mouth in attempt to contain the heat that spreads across your face.
It wasn't over.
Father Charlie moved toward a small wooden box, opening it with a reverence that made your stomach twist.
He reached inside and pulled out a flogging whip—a thick, multi-tailed instrument of punishment.
His expression is solemn, his lips moving in silent prayer as he prepares the whip, his fingers brushing reverently over the strips before raising the instrument of self-punishment.
Your heart hammers in your chest as you watch, unable to tear your eyes away as Father Charlie strikes himself.
The sharp crack of the whip fills the room and you flinch at the sound.
Each lash is deliberate. His body jerks with every strike, a soft grunt escaping him with every hit.
His whispered prayers mix with the sounds of his punishment, the intensity of the scene almost unbearable as it goes on, each crack of the whip sending a shiver down your spine.
It's too much. You couldn't take it anymore.
Your hand shot out, scrambling to close the laptop with a thud. For a moment you couldn't move.
Your body felt both heavy and weightless at the same time, suspended in the strange space between what you knew and what you had just witnessed.
The room around you suddenly felt too small, too close.
Shakily, you brush a few stray strands of hair from your damp forehead, trying to steady yourself.
You were a pastor—dedicated to God, to the people you served. You weren't supposed to feel like this.
Closing your eyes tightly, you try to will the feeling to go away and dissipate like the smoke from the candles you had blown out earlier in the church.
But the heat in your face, the trembling in your hands, didn't fade.
You felt as though you had been thrust into a battle between your devotion to God and the temptation of something far more dangerous—something you could no longer ignore.
The dim screen of your phone in your peripheral catches your attention.
Hesitant, you picked it up, and your stomach drops at the sight of Nicholas's message.
Nick: What do you think?

We’ve just taken a major step toward cleaning up space junk.
On Monday, October 2, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US issued its first fine for space debris, ordering the US TV provider Dish to pay $150,000 for failing to move one of its satellites into a safe orbit.
“It is definitely a very big symbolic moment for debris mitigation,” says Michelle Hanlon, a space lawyer at the University of Mississippi. “It’s a great step in the right direction.”
But it might be more than just a symbolic gesture by the FCC. Not only does it set a precedent for tackling bad actors who leave dangerous junk orbiting Earth, but it could send shock waves through the industry as other satellite operators become wary of having their reputation tarnished. While the $150,000 FCC fine was modest, Dish’s share price fell by nearly 4% immediately following its announcement, pushing the company’s $3 billion valuation down about $100 million.
The FCC’s action could also help breathe new life into the still-small market for commercial removal of space debris, essentially setting a price—$150,000—for companies such as Astroscale in Japan and ClearSpace in Switzerland to aim for in providing services that use smaller spacecraft to sidle up to dead satellites or rockets and pull them back into the atmosphere...
Another hope is that the FCC’s fine will encourage other countries to follow suit with their own enforcement actions on space junk. “It sends a message out of America taking leadership in this area,” says Newman. “This is starting the ball rolling.”
Today there are more than 8,000 active satellites, nearly 2,000 dead satellites, and hundreds of empty rockets orbiting Earth. Managing these objects and preventing collisions is a huge task, and one that is becoming increasingly difficult as the number of satellites grows rapidly. The worsening situation is largely due to mega-constellations of hundreds or thousands of satellites from companies like SpaceX and Amazon, designed to beam the internet to any corner of the globe...
Hanlon says there are further measures that could be taken to discourage companies from failing to dispose of satellites properly. “Honestly, I would love to see that if you don’t meet your license requirements, you’re banned from launching for a number of years,” she says. “If you’re driving under the influence you can have your license revoked. These are the kinds of measures we need to see.”
Chris Johnson, a space law advisor at the Secure World Foundation in the US, says the loss of reputation for Dish about the satellite situation might be worse than any fine it could have received. “They promised to remove it and they didn’t,” he says. “It’s like the first operator of a car to get a speeding ticket.”
The fall in the company’s share price appears to be indicative of that reputational damage. The fine may not have been as severe as it could have been, but the FCC’s actions can be seen as a warning to other companies to tackle space junk. “This is going to be on their record and their reputation,” says Johnson. “It’s not trivial.”

Glad people are finally finding out that these Pro Palestine protestors are ratfuckers-by-design at best (and Republicans at worst) and that's why they support Trump:
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/08/dnc-palestinian-gaza-protests/679524/
One month ago, an NBC News headline reported:
Protesters made a tiny footprint at the RNC in Milwaukee. Other than a modest daytime march on Monday afternoon, the first day of the Republican National Convention, there were virtually no protests over the event’s four days and nights.
Obviously, the story from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago is already proving different.
This is part of a pattern. Gather any large number of Democrats together, in almost any city or state, whether at rallies, fundraisers, or presidential appearances, and pro-Palestinian protesters will try to wreck the event. These actions have been building to threats of outright violence. Pro-Trump and Republican events, meanwhile, are almost always left in peace.
Of the two big parties, the Democrats are more emotionally sympathetic to Palestinian suffering. The Biden administration is working to negotiate the cease-fire that the pro-Palestinian camp claims to want. The administration has provided hundreds of millions of dollars of humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza. President Joe Biden’s terms for ending the fighting in Gaza envision a rapid movement to full Palestinian statehood.
By contrast, former President Donald Trump uses Palestinian as an insult. His administration moved the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, and recognized Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights. In 2016, Trump campaigned on a complete shutdown of travel by Muslims into the United States; Trump now speaks of deporting campus anti-Israel protesters. He has pledged to block Gaza refugees from entering the United States.
Trump wants to tell the story that he and his party will enforce public order. He alleges that Democrats cannot or will not protect Americans against chaos spread by extremist elements. The pro-Palestinian movement works every day to create images that support Trump’s argument. As a visibly annoyed Vice President Kamala Harris asked protesters in Detroit earlier this month: Do they want to elect Donald Trump?
Not all pro-Palestinian demonstrators are thinking about the election. Many seem driven by moral outrage or ideological passion. But for those who are thinking strategically, the answer is obvious: Yes, they want to elect Trump. Of course they want to elect Trump. Electing Trump is their best—and maybe only—hope.
To understand why, cast your mind back a quarter century.
In the election of 2000, Vice President Al Gore faced Texas Governor George W. Bush. Gore probably would have won in a straight two-way contest. But that same year, the progressive advocate Ralph Nader entered the race as a third-party challenger—and he pulled just enough of the vote to tip the Electoral College and the presidency toward Bush.
Nader later professed regret for running as a third-party candidate. But at the time, Nader understood exactly what he was doing. Defeating Gore and electing Bush was the intended and declared purpose of Nader’s candidacy. Nader detailed his logic in many speeches, including this one to the summer-2000 convention of the NAACP:
If you ever wondered why the right wing and the corporate wing of the Democratic Party has so much more power over that party than the progressive wing, it’s because the right wing and the corporate wing have somewhere to go: It’s called the Republican Party. And so they’re catered to and they’re regaled—like the Democratic Leadership Council, they’re catered to and they’re regaled. But if you look at the progressive wing … they have nowhere to go. And you know when you’re told that you have nowhere to go, you get taken for granted. And when you get taken for granted, you get taken.
To paraphrase his argument even more bluntly: If progressives caused the Democrats to lose the presidency in the election of 2000, then Democrats would take progressives more seriously in all the elections that followed.
Nader’s logic was not altogether wrong. In many ways, the post-2000 Democratic Party has shifted well to the left of where the party was in the 1980s and ’90s. But catering to the party’s left has cost Democrats winnable races, and with them, key priorities: The Iraq War and 20 years of inaction on climate change head the list of progressive disappointments since the 2000 election, and the list extends from there. Whether or not the shift was worth the price, Nader was neither ignorant nor deceived. He identified his goal and willingly accepted the risks for himself and his movement.
So it is now with the pro-Palestinian demonstrators of 2024.
They start with a fundamental political problem: Their cause is not popular. Solid majorities of Americans accept Israel’s war in Gaza as valid and fiercely condemn the Hamas terrorist attacks as unacceptable. The exact margin varies from poll to poll depending on how the question is asked, but when presented with a binary choice between Israel and the Palestinians, Americans prefer Israel by a factor of at least two to one.
The brute fact of those numbers makes it very difficult for pro-Palestinian activists to win elections. In this cycle, despite all the emotion stirred by the Gaza war, two of Israel’s fiercest critics in Congress lost their primaries to pro-Israel challengers.
From the point of view of any practical politician: If a cause is so unpopular that it cannot help its friends, why listen to its advocates?
The only answer to that question, again from the practical point of view, is the message of the protesters in Chicago: Maybe we can’t help you if you do listen to us, but we can hurt you if you don’t!
Think of it another way. Since the bloody attack by Hamas on October 7 and the Israeli response, pro-Palestinian protesters have marched and agitated all over the United States. They have occupied college campuses. They have impeded access to Jewish schools, businesses, and places of worship. They have posted impassioned words and images on social media.
Yet all of their militant action has barely budged U.S. policy. Arms, intelligence, and economic assistance continue to flow from the United States to Israel. U.S. military forces cooperate with Israel against Iranian proxies in Lebanon and Yemen. Although the U.S. has imposed restraint on some Israeli operations, Israel has mostly been allowed to fight its own war in its own way.
These were President Biden’s decisions, not Vice President Harris’s. But she was the second-highest-ranking member of the administration. If Biden’s deputy inherits Biden’s office, the message is clear: His administration’s record of support for Israel carried no meaningful political price. All of those street demonstrations and campus occupations will have amounted to so much empty noise. All of those articles arguing that Gaza explained Biden’s troubles with young voters would be exposed as ideological wishcasting.
If Harris wins, the pro-Palestinian movement will have lost.
If Harris loses, however, pro-Palestinian protesters can claim that they were responsible for her defeat. That claim might not be true—in fact it probably would not be true—but try disproving it. The pro-Palestinian movement would have at least some basis to argue: You lost because you alienated us.
If Harris wins, she may want to do something about the pro-Palestinian cause—for humanitarian reasons, for reasons of diplomacy and geopolitics, for reasons of Democratic-constituency management in particular congressional districts. But she won’t have to do it. She’ll know that the protesters tried to beat her, and they failed.
If Harris loses, however, future Democratic candidates will tread more carefully on Israeli-Palestinian terrain. Even if they privately doubt that the party’s position on Gaza explains anything truly important, they will be worried by advisers and donors who will believe it or who will want to believe it.
But what about Trump? Why aren’t the pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Chicago more fearful of Trump’s possible return to the presidency?
Although the pro-Palestine cause attracts support from progressives, it is not exactly a progressive cause. Americans associate progressivism with secularism, feminism, and gay-rights advocacy, among other causes. The Palestinian national movement, especially now that Hamas has effectively replaced the Palestine Liberation Organization as leader of “the resistance,” has become markedly religious, patriarchal, and socially reactionary. But it is also a movement fiercely opposed to American global hegemony—and that is its “anti-imperialist” appeal to Western progressives.
If you oppose American global hegemony, Trump is your candidate (as a long list of anti-American dictators have already figured out). Trump fiercely opposes the alliances and trade agreements that magnify American power and make the U.S. the center of a huge network of democratic, market-oriented countries. Trump’s “America First” bluster is actually a pathway to American isolation and weakness that will further remove American power from the world.
If you wish America ill, of course you wish Trump well. The far left and far right of U.S. politics may disagree on much, but they agree on that.
The protesters in the streets of Chicago are not acting aimlessly or randomly. The people on the receiving end of their protests would benefit from equal clarity. The protesters want chaos and even violence in order to defeat Harris and elect Trump. They are not ill-informed or excessively idealistic or sadly misled. They are not overzealous allies. They are purposeful adversaries.
The Chicago-convention delegates should recognize that truth, and act accordingly.
