hi i just found your blog and its making me very emo 😭 i grew up in appalachia (the shenandoah valley in VA near the WV border) but had to move away several years ago to central VA, and then even further away last year to the rural midwest. i've been really strongly missing appalachia for the past year, but esp so these past couple months.

i miss the people and community, the spoonbread or chicken and dumplings my mom used to make me when i was sick, the mountains surrounding you on every side, being off in the woods with no one around, picking wild blackberries with my best friend, speeding around twisty roads blasting music with all the windows down, picking and eating the wild honeysuckle growing along my back fence, all the bluegrass and folk music, hearing people's accents, the pennsylvania smartweed that would grow under my porch, looking up at the night sky at night and being able to see the entire milky way, the crick i would cross when i walked to school, etc etc etc.

i think the thing i miss the most is the lgbt community. yeah we were small and there was a lot of lgbtphobia, but we were really closeknit, and i was involved w a lot of lgbt activism in my area. city and suburbanite gays just all have such vastly different experiences than me and everyone i grew up with, i always just end up feeling really isolated around them.

also i don't think people not from appalachia understand just how connected to the land we are. its not just about "oh i like hiking" or "i think the mountains are pretty" or something like that. the land is a part of me and i'm a part of it. we're tied to eachother. and that's not even getting into the communal aspect of being appalachian.

i desperately want to move back to appalachia, but i probably won't be able to for at least 4 or 5 years and it makes me really depressed. being away feels like part of my soul is missing. however i don't think i'll be able to move back to the exact area that i'm from, both bc i'm jewish and have gotten more involved w that since growing up and wanna live in an area w at least a small jewish community, and bc my hometown is almost unrecognizable now from all of the people moving in from northern VA and building fancy sitdown restraunts and shit on main street. i remember before we even had a walmart or a target and had to drive to the closest city 45mins away if we needed to get anything more than basic groceries.

anyways this is really long and rambly, but i just wanted to say it was really nice to see someone talking about appalachia and posting pictures of it, it made me feel less alone 💛

First is this guy I noticed in Puerto Rico. He or she was bigger than a quarter! Very impressive.

These two were in Virginia! The grasshopper (?) was at Shenandoah National Park and the Monarch (?) somewhere around mid-northern VA. It was a hot day so we tried to provide water on the spoon. Not sure if that helped or was a good idea. 😅

Last was this hitchhiker in North Dakota! Our friend here did not like me removing them from the car and left a present on my hand. I forgive them though XD.

All in all feel free to ID, but mostly I wanted to share my bugs! I admit though, I -am- curious about the Puerto Rico beetle (?) especially, if it’s not too much trouble. Either way thank you! Love this blog. :)

Hi! I’m glad you hoarded your old bug photos so we can all enjoy them. I’m assuming the first beetle is some type of scarab, but I’d need a clearer photo to tell you which.

The green leggy fellow is not a grasshopper but a katydid! The butterfly is a tiger swallowtail rather than a monarch. Offering a nectar-drinking bug plain water or putting them on/near a flower if they seem weak is fine, but if they’re moving normally I wouldn’t bother!

The last fellow is a two-striped grasshopper :)

Valmos Mansion Nashville Tennessee 1957

"So, you and this Elvis friend of yours..." Denise said as she was chopping up vegetables for dinner. Cecelia was seasoning the steaks, "Hmm? Oh yes, he's a great guy." Cecelia smiled. Her mind was wandering to the moment that he would arrive at the front door of this prominent mansion that she called home, "I see. Clearly, he's not ashamed to be around you." Denise commented as Cecelia playfully rolled her eyes. Cecelia had shaken her head, sure her mother meant well, but then again. Her mother was having a rumored fling with her childhood crush, Frank Sinatra, "Of course not. He's always hanging around Beale Street," Cecelia giggled. She was too, but her mother couldn't know that "I promise you, you're gonna love him. He gets shy sometimes and stutters, but he means well." Cecelia blushed hard as she then heard the steps creak. Coming downstairs was her grandmother Calpurnia, born in 1892, a cabaret star and still an entertainment knockout, 

"Talkin about that pelvis boy again?" Calpurnia asked as Cecelia nodded,

"When isn't she. It's Elvis did this and Elvis that and-"

DING DONG

               DING DONG

"ELVIS IS AT THE DOOR. I'M NOT READY!" Cecelia shouted, running upstairs, as her grandmother laughed, "If I didn't know any, better. I'd think they were dating." She mumbled as she walked towards the door. Elvis had a nice suit jacket and black slacks. His loafers and a bouquet of red roses in his hand. After all, he wanted to make a strong impression on her mother. It wasn't because she was a big name in the industry. She was the mother of his girlfriend, who was slowly secretly moving into Graceland. When the door opened, he was expecting Denise. Instead, it was, 

"Well, aren'tcha you cuter in person. Come on in." Her northern accent was strong. 

"Thank you, Ma'am." Elvis smiled as Calpurnia looked at him. She could see why her granddaughter was obsessed with him. Those pretty long eyelashes, his eyes, and his dimples, she was smitten, 

"Please call me Mrs. Valmos," Calpurnia winked, 

"Wait, this is..."

"My mansion." She winked, "Long ago, I was Betty Va Va." Walking by a portrait of herself from the 1920s, Elvis admired it as he saw the similarities between her and Cecelia, "Of course, when your mothers a devoted preacher wife, you get rid of the vava and keep Betty," on the wall were platinum records and gold ones, he'd have thought that Cecelia's grandmother was the queen of the big bands Betty Valmos, but he nodded and reveled in her greatness, 

"Going on about your glory days, Mother," Denise asked as she then saw Elvis. He was still holding tight to the roses, and he nearly froze. He was standing in front of his mother's favorite jazz artist, Denise Valmos,

 "Hello, young man..."

"S-S-Sorry, I'm uh Elvis Presley, Ma'am." God, where was Cecelia. He was trembling in his loafers right now, 

"Ma'am makes me feel old, call me Ms. Valmos." Denise glanced at him. He was cute, tall, dark, and handsome. And he reminded her of Sinatra when she and him were both young. She could see why Cecelia was a fanatic, 

"I-I got these for you. Cecelia said red was your favorite color." 

"They're lovely, I'll put them in a vase and send for Cecelia." Her Philadelphian accent was strong, but it was classy, 

"Of course, Ms. Valmos," He nodded, sitting in the living room, looking at the chandelier. There were pictures on the fireplace mantel of Cecelia, her mother, and her father, then of just her mother and her. He felt sorrowful for her. But he knew life was different for everyone.

"Cecelia, what'stakin' you long!" Denise knocked at the door. As Calpurnia chuckled. "She's getting pretty for that boy."

"Or kissing that damn poster..." Denise sighed. Cecelia was on her tippytoes as she left a deep red print on her Elvis poster. When she finished, she flattened out her red gingham dress, wiggled her petticoat, and walked downstairs. 

"Don't you look like a cute picnic tablecloth?" Calpurnia chuckled,

"Glammy..." Cecelia glanced at her,

"What push comes to shove. It's one way to get him on top of you. I mean, hey, men like food," She shrugged as Denise was red in the face.

"Must you be vulgar!"

"Must you keep tryin to shelter your 22-year-old child?" Calpurnia walked past her. Cecelia walked down the steps, she saw Elvis leaning on the couch, comfortable with his legs open, 

"Careful, you'll pinch a nerve," Calpurnia mumbled,

"Mr. Presley..." Denise said as he stood up, helping her down the stairs, then Calpurnia and then his precious Cecelia, who he couldn't help but stare at, sneaking a kiss on her wrist as she giggled,

 "You look beautiful..."

"Thank your ho- Mr. Presley," She blushed, the pair walking to the kitchen. There was an array of food on the table, honey biscuits, steak, macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables, greens, and more, Elvis felt like he was in heaven,

"So blue eyes..." Calpurnia said,

"ma'am?"

"How's a boy like you not married. I mean, if I were your age, I'd-"

"Mother!" Denise nudged her as Calpurnia laughed. Elvis laughed at the flattery, "I'm just saying, Denise, have you seen his hips move." Calpurnia said between eating, "There's a lot more they can do..." Cecelia mumbled as Elvis was a beating bright red,

 "I-I'm glad someone enjoys my dancin." He was flustered, but he loved it, 

"Forgive her, she's 65." Denise laughed,

"Not a problem at all," He laughed as Cecelia drank her lemonade. Elvis held her hand as Calpurnia noticed. She knew something was up.

"So, I heard you bought a mansion in Memphis?" Denise said, cutting her steak as Cecelia sighed, "I assume you plan to have parties and whatnot in it." 

"Oh no, Ms. Valmos, Nothin like that. My family mostly lives with me,includin my parents." He smiled as she nodded, "There's a special girl in mind I've got movin in me with me, but parties, not too many." Elvis flinched when he felt Cecelia kick his thigh under the table,

"So you're traditional?" Calpurnia asked,

"Yes, Ma'am." He smiled,

"God-fearing too, I suppose?"

"He's always reading his bible, and if he's not, then he's quoting scripture," Cecelia added, their eyes meeting as Denise and Calpurnia looked at each other, some friends they must've been. 

"Good, Good, pastors run in our family, and singers," Denise said

"Really?" Elvis was happy to hear that.

"Yes, which makes me wonder. You probably are a firm believer in no sex before marriage." Calpurnia said, grabbing another biscuit, Elvis got quiet, and Cecelia laughed, 

"I mean, my granddaughter has been raised to be untouched until then, and she will remain untouched, correct,"

Cecelia was sweating bullets as Elvis was laughing at her now. 

"This dinner is amazing, don't you think so Elvis."

"Y-Yeah, love the plates, delicious." He smiled,

"You two are still virgins, aren't you..." Calpurnia asked as even Denise was intrigued, "Glammy, this is dinner... it's rude and unjust to ask such a thing." Her voice went up an octave,

"You know these greens and this here steak is amazin." Elvis smiled, "Y'all should try the uh-uh honey rolls, so good you could make love to 'em- WHich I've never done!" Elvis was so embarrassed he didn't know what he was saying. All Cecelia wanted to do was pass away at the very moment. Denise couldn't help but laugh at his response as Cecelia was still sweating, 

"You know Elvis and I are workin in a movie together soon!" she blurted out as the room fell silent. For once, it felt great, 

As the night progressed from its awkward start, Elvis learned that Cecelia was surrounded by love, a slightly strict mother and manager, but love, 

"I'm so sorry about tonight. I-I didn't think she'd ask something like that or the many weird questions or-" Elvis pulled her close as he gave her a tender, passionate kiss. Cecelia kissed back with the same passion, her fingers in his hair, and her eyes closed. She didn't want to watch him leave out the driveway, but she knew she'd see him later on tonight in her room, next to his.

"Honey, your family is lovely, and one day I'll marry into it." He kissed her again, not noticing the door opening, 

"Uh-huh... I knew it.."

"Glammy!? How much did you hear?"

"Everything," Calpurnia said, dressed in her night gown, "So, I assume I'll be covering for you tonight." Elvis and Cecelia blushed, 

"Glammy, you mean you-"

"Mhmm, you two gone on home, I'll handle the rest." She winked, watching her granddaughter leave out with Elvis.

"Mother where's Cece?"

"She went to rehearse with Elvis..."

Harmadik évösszegző válogatásunk downtempoban mozog tehát, műfajilag ambient, drone, kortárs, experimental, dub, trip hop, field recordings, minimal, krautrock, etno elemekből építkezik. A terjedelme 140 felvétel, cirka 12 óra, és az online verzió is 11 óra felett van a maga 123 track-jével.

Northern VA Native Plant Garden

Wow oh my goodness life turned upside down and inside out and overall not great! But in an effort to practice things that would help my mental health I started fussing around in my garden. The new house I'm in has a front yard and a backyard. I've decided to devote most of my attention to the backyard. I spend a lot of time scrolling through Facebook Marketplace and my various FB groups looking for free gardening materials. I'm not really planning on staying in the house past the year (though I'd like to be done moving honestly) so i don't want to invest too much money in the garden. But time and energy are fine to spend; I'm enjoying playing in the dirt so I get an immediate return of "childlike joy at playing in dirt" and a possible future return of "oh I grew stuff!"

My goal is to have an ornamental side of the garden and a raised garden bed for things I plan on eating. Currently i have a ton of yellow bell pepper seedlings (I started them a bit late in the season but it's been unseasonably warm these past few falls and mild winters) and 14 tomato plants! I do not like tomatoes but I do like to grow things and they're so easy.

I'm planning on making my raised bed out of some bricks/pavers/garden stones someone gave me. It doesn't need to be huge or pretty or super stable, just a bit of a container for me to drop some plants in. Someone was also giving away plant soil which was great.

With all the weeds I've pulled up I'm hoping to fake/badly compost them. I'm too impatient to wait the months and months I need for them to properly break down. I've stuck them all in a black garbage bin to hope the 100 degree days will kill off their seeds so I can crumble them up in the bottom of my raised garden bed.

For the ornamental side of things I'm focusing on native Virginia plants! There's a great FB group dedicate to native VA plants and people are always giving away or swapping plants! A very generous woman gave me a ton of plants that I'll detail about later in this post!

First I'd like to document the weeds I pulled! I had so much fun weeding actually. It's a repetitive task I enjoy and I like to identify plants even if they are weeds. I used Google Lens for IDing most of them and it actually seemed fairly good at that. Without further ado a list of the different weeds I saw in my garden during 2+ hours of work :D

Weeds

Erigeron Canadensis (Horseweed)

This one was fun to pull! It came up easily and hadn't flowered or gone to seed at all! I think Alexis Nicole has talked about this one before? I wish it had been growing in a part of my garden that didn't need to be weeded right that moment so I could have eaten some. Apparently "dried leaves can be used as a seasoning with a flavor similar to tarragon" (source: eat the weeds) I'm sure I'll find it again maybe in my front yard and I'll try to save some.

Oxalis Acetosella (Wood Sorrel)

God this one HURT to pull, emotionally speaking! I love wood sorrel so much and its one of those plants I can ID easily. Some of my brave friends will eat it when I offer it but most pass. Unfortunately it was right in the area I needed pulled up for my raised bed. I am hoping I can encourage it to grow in my ornamental side! Alexis Nicole has definitely talked about this one before. It had shallow roots and was easy to pull :)

Matricaria Chamomilla (German Chamomile)

Another one I did not want to pull up but had to! It had pretty shallow roots that came up easily. I actually collected all the ones I weeded and popped them in some water. I hope to replay in my ornamental side of things. Fingers crossed they've survived this shock. I have a couple packs of really old seeds so I've started some chamomile from seed. I don't know that it'll work. I think I have some growing in my front yard so I might try to transplant that.

Lactuca Serriola (Prickly Lettuce)

This plant was my second least favourite to weed. Its roots are strong and run deep. The prickles bit me through my gloves. It was satisfying when I got a good grip and pulled it all up but more often than not I heard the roots snap leaving good chunks under ground. It sucked. A lot of them were super big and tall. I know its edible but didn't save any to forage. I'm sure it will be back.

Solanum Carolinense (Carolina Horsenettle)

This plant is my mortal enemy. It bites you. Its stubborn. Its totally toxic. I hate it. This was the most predominant weed in the garden. It was tall and if I tried to reach around to grab a different weed it would scratch me.

Verbascum Thapsus (Common Mullein)

Lord this plant was a stubborn one. The roots were strong and deep but it was so satisfying when I got it out. I actually couldn't remember this one's name when I sat down to write this so I used the Virginia Tech website (link here) to ID it! It's a great website that lets you select features of a plant and offers ones that fit those criteria.

I had a lot of fun weeding and IDing these plants! I'll have another post up about the native VA plants I'm cultivating. I hope whoever reads this enjoys the post. If its just me I hope I find this useful as I start a garden art journal where I can draw and take notes on all these plants.

One of my good Reno buddies has been a huge fan of Orville Peck for a while. I'd heard Dead of Night and dug it, but in general it's not a style of music I can easily get into (crooners just don't do it for me). It took me a while to sit down and really give the full Pony album a chance. I finally did listen and fall in love on the tail end of my move out of Nevada. Not long after, a new coworker and I were at a gay karaoke bar here in Seattle and witnessed an incredible rendition of Dead of Night. Now, that's not an easy song for karaoke. Peck's range is incredible. But this person absolutely nailed it. It was a really powerful and unexpected performance that hit me at a very vulnerable time and left an indelible mark.

Julien's character really came together when I landed him in Northern Nevada. It gave me dedicated space to process my feelings about my move out of that area, since I was otherwise busy with comics deadlines, a new dayjob, and acclimating to a new city alone. And listening to Pony on repeat was also a part of that process for me.

It's not that I think Julien sounds like Orville Peck per se, but his voice was so omnipresent during the early Circuit Breaker development that they're linked in my brain. Hope that answers your question! I'd love to know who y'all hear when you read Jules' dialogue.

Borja Flames - Nuevo Medievo

He has three brains, a thousand lives, past or parallel, and his name is Borja Flames. Spanish, Parisian, Burgundian, cosmonaut, we don’t know anymore. His head is that of a pope, a king, a lion, a faun or a melancholic centaur. He is well dressed, with pot holes and beard : Merovingian. We knew him in June and Jim of which he was the southern face (the northern hemisphere being Marion Cousin), a duo recently transfigured under the name of Catalina Matorral, real electronic pastoral. We saw him reshuffle his cards for the first time in 2016 with Nacer Blanco, the first album under his name, whose tipsy clocks, totems like the Tower of Pisa and bony madrigals evoked Moondog, Robert Wyatt and the Postman Cheval, one inside the other, helter-skelter. After which Rojo Vivo (2018) a blend of pale house and tenebrous preachings made us fear and pleasure and dance. Nuevo Medievo which appears today (Les disques du Festival Permanent / Murailles Music) is even more beautiful, more striking. From the very beginning, sung on tiptoe, the silvery voice with robotic effects on a synthetic bedside rug spiked with cymbals makes us feel bareheaded in a vast cabinet of stars, we are captivated. There are laser beams, oracle lyrics with vocoder. Paul Loiseau, the Morse drummer, makes the kitchen set sound like an orchestra of stoned calculators, then Borja Flames accelerates the record’s pulse with the diction of a fed-up TV news anchor before a jungle background until Marion Cousin and Rachel Langlais make everything capsize, she of saturnian vocalization, she of a strangely regulated synth. Then on, the hits fall here, there, everywhere, real ones, a shower of asteroids. Negro Negro is suave, mysterious, moving, as surprising as a kiss we no longer expect. We would gladly listen to her only but then comes Magnetismo making us giddy with joy. Then Marioneta, dry and airy as a Sign O’The Times period Prince, which one could dance to endlessly, even alone, head tucked under arm. Nuevo Medievo moves this way throughout, stiff and groovy, cerebral but exploding with dreamy tumors. Powerfully entertaining, filled with odd rhythms, computer choirs, keyboards that slide and are slippery. Nuevo Medievo is a bit reminiscent of the synth-wave scene and 80s Iberian post-punk. It also evokes lo-fi versions of Franco Battiato‘s panoramic SF hits from the album No Time No Space (far away worlds, sound research, fat refrains), Arthur Russel disco, or even Porque te vas, yes yes, Sade, Motown B-sides played at the IRCAM one evening of blunt slackness, Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrel in a full-on slow dance under the anachronistic neon lights of a chicha bar or Blade Runner rushes with the Miami Vice original soundtrack. If Nuevo Medievo, like all of music loving cannibal Borja Flames’ records, summons a certain number of other artists, it does so to organize unexpected meetings between them, and to dissect each one in a scientific, erotic, amorous and gastronomic impulse before freeing himself from them and drawing in all the diagonals of authentically unheard features. So I was having a conversation just now with a friend who's just wrapping up ARR, and now that I'm more or less finished with HW, I found myself looking back on doing that myself and how weird/funny it seemed when, in the middle of all the other chaos that was happening in the story, all of the VAs changed. Like, obviously I realise why this actually happened, and in all fairness, even if we lost Merlwyb's amazing original VA (a tragedy) (the main reason Stelak joined the Maelstrom tbh), the vast majority of the new VAs were a significant improvement over the old ones. 

Notably, Raubahn suddenly Became Northern, as did Ilberd, leading me to assume that Little Ala Mhigo had become, like. Yorkshire, or something.

Now, you can laugh at that if you want, but as a Real Live English I can tell you that the North of England, which is where Yorkshire is and where that accent comes from, is a genuinely impoverished place, mostly because the South keeps stealing all of its money. There's even an independence movement going on up there! Giving Raubahn, Ilberd and other notable Ala Mhigans a Northern accent feels very appropriate. A genius move, honestly, given that the alternative would be to give them some Other Accent that might potentially be construed as racist. Very smart, some excellent casting choices made.

So yeah, that was a thought I had.

I got an interview on Tuesday at 7am for Aldi. I’ve been looking up interview questions they’ll likely ask and taking notes about what to say and how to answer. I hope I do well. I’m super nervous. It’s been so long since I’ve had an interview. And Aldi is such a great opportunity. Job starts at 17/hour! I need this so bad. I need to save up for a new car cuz mine is probably gonna break down in the next couple years. Plus I’ve got almost $3k in credit card debt needing payed off. My parents also wanna sell the house in a year and move to Northern Va closer to my dad’s work and I don’t wanna move there cuz it’s super fuckin expensive in Fairfax county. So I need a job so I can save up to move out by next year. I’m so anxious about the future.

We really were trying to do the right things to get her reunited with her kids. I mean, for anyone to say different would be a lie. This is us after we took a parenting class offered up by the USO , and the Cumberland county D.S.S. office. Marie was the one that signed us up, and I didn't think twice. After all, its a package deal when it comes to getting into a relationship when there are kids involved. I had no problem with the fact that she had kids. I love kids, I wish I would have had a thousand kids. They are a gift from God.

'Carmen ' was the instructor for the classes, we were the only people there, so Carmen gave us more attention. It was awesome, I would do it again . It's too bad that Marie has not been recognized for even this small achievement. Best part is - pizzle and marie did classes voluntarily- We didn't have to attend these classes. Poor woman, she knew she was in for a battle with the lamest dude I have seen in my life.

Severe Thunderstorms Deliver Hurricane-Force Winds and Tennis Ball-Sized Hail to the Great Lakes Region

On Tuesday afternoon and evening, a line of severe thunderstorms moved through Michigan, leaving over 400,000 electricity customers without power and causing widespread tree damage.

On Tuesday afternoon and evening, a severe weather system battered Michigan and the Great Lakes region, plunging over 400,000 utility customers into darkness. Thunderstorms with hurricane-force wind gusts and tennis ball-sized hail caused significant damage across parts of the Midwest.

Hurricane-Force Wind Gusts Hit Detroit International Airport

On Tuesday, more than 100 damage reports came in from the Midwest to the Great Lakes region due to severe storms. Detroit International Airport recorded a wind gust of 76 mph, equivalent to the strength of a Category 1 hurricane.

Other reports included wind gusts ranging from 60 to 70 mph, with 66 mph recorded at Oakland County International Airport and 63 mph in Flint, Michigan.

The Chicago area and its northern suburbs also faced strong winds, with gusts between 50 and 60 mph. An unofficial wind gust of 80 mph was reported in Wauconda, Illinois.

The powerful winds were strong enough to topple trees and bring down power lines throughout the region.

Debris from the fallen trees and utility lines was scattered widely, blocking roads, disrupting travel, and landing on homes and businesses.

In Perry, Michigan, a tree reportedly fell onto a house, while at Michigan State University in East Lansing, a car was struck by a falling tree on campus.

A video from St. Clair County, Michigan, captures the damage left in the wake of Tuesday's severe weather.

The footage reveals numerous trees and branches toppled by the storm, with debris scattered over trees and dangerously close to homes.

While crews are actively working to clear the debris and reopen blocked roads, there is still much work to be done.

In addition to the strong winds, large hail was reported across several communities. The largest hailstone, measuring 2.5 inches (about the size of a tennis ball), was reported in Woodstock, Illinois. Hail over 1 inch was also recorded in other parts of Illinois and Michigan.

After the storms passed, efforts to restore power to over 400,000 utility customers across multiple states continued into the night. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 300,000 customers in Michigan and over 16,000 in Illinois were still without power.

Power outages persist in Minnesota days after powerful storms hit the area on Monday.
