So we’ve been talking about tropes these last couple of days thanks to @abstractelysium super fun tag game. And although I did my three, since then I’ve been thinking about what is probably my favourite trope, although I never thought of it as one. But then I started thinking of more examples, and there are a lot of them, and also thinking that we have so many tropes about how they meet and fall in love, this is just another one. And if this has already been pointed out as a trope or has a name and I somehow missed it please correct me. And I guess some of these can also be put into other tropes, like enemies to lovers or friends to lovers, but to me, at their core, they start at that small gesture of kindness.

Because he was kind.

If someone comes up with a better name for this I'm open to suggestions. I suck at titles. There are more examples of this so I'm choosing the ones I think exemplify this more for me and also trying to get shows from different places. I guess this trope is pretty self explanatory, and although there is no shortage of kind boys in bl, I'm focusing on the cases where there was a past moment, where one of them was kind to the other and it planted a seed. Regardless of what happened after.

Takara no Vidro

Takara consoling Taishin when he was sad because his bird died was what started it all. He was shown kindness from a stranger and would follow him everywhere after that.

Cherry Magic

This applies to all versions of this show. Adachi showed kindness to Kurosawa and allowed him to be weak and so the epic crush would begin.

We Best Love

Despite the enemies to lovers thing, Gao Shi De's crush started because Shu Yi showed him kindness when they were kids. 

About Youth

This could apply to both couples on this show. With the main couple kindness is the whole reason Qhang falls for Ye Guang. And then he falls right back pretty much for the same reason. And Ray falls for Ah Jian because of what he did for him that day. Everyone is just really kind in this show, ok?

Love Mate

He tied his shoes (I also love this btw) and gave him his lost card and wished him luck. Haram was lost right there.

having seen at least the rough outlines of all the romances now I have to say that I think emmrich's is probably objectively the best in terms of coherence and completeness of story arc (with the understanding that ultimately the 'best' romance is whichever one makes YOUR heart sing anyway so objectivity is a silly thing to claim that way, it just felt like it's the arc with the most well-paced focused content and the least dangling threads)... but lucanis' is my favourite haha. just. the whole kneeling before your beloved full of reverence but without any of the distance that usually implies??? his complete undramatic certainty and calm in every scene with rook after this, having spent the whole game caught between fear and longing???? mr. lives in a pantry but it says nothing about my psyche don't worry about it it's purely for tactical reasons that I keep myself contained in a small dark room not entirely unlike a cell, love among the parsnips -- finally coming to rook in their room and it's so comfortable and comforting???? after all the times rook supports and comforts him through the game he's finally able to return the same to them when they need it while being so calm and steady and it's so fucking sweet and feels so effortless and with no price attached?????? he basically assigns himself the role of your bodyguard and he WILL stab a god over it??????????????? the turn to protector (which was in his heart all along longing to get out and find a place) of it all????? he sounds like he's found himself unexpectedly stumbling into such a soul-lightening state of revelatory existential relief, full on 'you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' mary oliver style, and he goes and he shares that with rook and protectively envelops them in it when they're hurting??????????????????????????? hello for the maker's sake hello can anyone hear me?????

I'm not exactly sure how I want to phrase this yet, but I think a lot of the utterly weird takes I see sometimes float by me on our cursed blue hellsite (esp when it comes to mdzscql fandom) is coming from a refusal to meet the genre where it's at.

Like, why are we trying to interrogate classism in MDZS society, MDZS is a romance, the societal worldbuilding is just enough to support some general big ideas and the provide context for the romance. We can't get ANY kind of read on general classim/sexism/anything else from. this source material. if you think you can get granular when your sample size of characters from various social and gender strata are so small and we don't know how the vast majority of people in here live you are making stuff up.

Like, meet the story where it's at: it's a romance novel.
