: ̗̀➛ tropes: fem! reader 𖥔 mdni 𖥔 toji loves boobs
: ̗̀➛ words: 982
: ̗̀➛ notes: this was requested by anon and i did post it through the ask but I wanted to post it separately hehe. ok enjoy

Toji had an outlandish kink.
It developed shortly after you’d given birth. You didn’t understand why he’d stare at you as you breastfeed your child. Well, he mostly stared at your breasts in his classic Toji style.
“What?” you bit out as he continuously watched you from the kitchen. You helped your baby latch onto your nipple and stared at your husband with a defiant look. “Oh, for God’s sake, Toji. Spit it out.”
“I want a taste.”
“Taste of what?”
“What that little brat is drinking.”
Your brows hit the roof of your hairline at his bizarre request. He couldn’t be—Wow, your husband had truly outdone himself in his kinks game. “Yeah, no fucking way. This milk is strictly for our child. If you’re so eager, open the fridge and pour yourself a cup. I’m pretty sure we’ve got cookies, too. But the oatmeal ones are mine—”
“I don’t give a fuck, doll. I wanna know what your milk tastes like.”
“Toji, are you out of your fucking mind? I’m not—You’re a grown ass man. I’m not going to, I don’t know, breastfeed you.”
“I’m not asking you to breastfeed me. I only want a little taste. I’m fucking curious, sue me.”
You scoffed, giving a small rock to your baby as he gargled and took small breaths in between the feeding. “Toji, I love you, and I love your abnormal requests during sex, but I’m not letting you taste my milk.”
Toji stared at you with a frown. A puppy-dog frown that melted your heart and added cracks in your defenses. He lowered his eyes and resumed washing the dishes. “I only wanted a small taste,” he mumbled in the most adorable manner.
Growling from your throat, you folded at his request. “Fine.”
“Really?”
“Just—Just give me a minute.”
Toji abandoned the dishes and quickly sat next to you, ogling your breast. “What if he drinks you dry?”
“What if you drink me dry?”
“I don’t mind sharing. He’s my son, too.”
You rolled your eyes and smiled down at your baby. After a few minutes of drinking, he unlatched his mouth and you handed him off to Toji to burp him. “Wait here. I’ll go use the suction pump—”
“Fuck no. I wanna drink it straight from the source.”
You took in a deep, aggravated breath. “Fine, you dick. Put him to sleep and meet me back here.”
A tiny part of you was intrigued by Toji’s kink, but another was scared that he would drink you dry. The man was downright obsessed with breasts since the first night you slept together. During your pregnancy, he’d lay you back on his chest and massage them with scented oils, commenting how heavy they’d gotten. It was only a matter of time his curiosity regarding your chest would grow.
You unhooked your nursing bra and placed it aside, laying down on the couch with a groan. Toji entered minutes later and immediately covered your body with his looming figure, giving you kisses across your face for being such a kind wife. “Whatever. Hurry up so I can eat something.”
“I’ll cook,” he said, trailing kisses down to your neck and chest. “l’m gonna finger you, too, baby.”
You rolled your eyes with a smile.
Toji smiled and pushed his hands down your panties, parting your folds slowly growing wetter and wetter from his heated presence. He sought out your clit like the expert he was and rubbed it with gentle circles. Your lips parted with small, soft sounding sighs, fingers running through your hair and staying there. “That feels good, doll?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Yeah?” Toji pushed his middle and ring finger into your entrance. He began stimulating you with his quick thrusts. Your heels scraped up the couch’s surface, teeth clamping down on your bottom lip.
Toji ran his coarse tongue over your right nipple. You glanced down at him and scoffed from his cheeky wink. He kissed the sensitive bud, then locked his mouth on it, pulling it in. You wrapped a leg around the back of his thighs, and your hands cupped the back of his head as he suckled on your nipple. He moaned and took laboured breaths from his nose, and when you glanced down, you found trickles of white liquid at the corner of his lips.
“Toji, save some—”
He switched to your left nipple, leaving his fingers static inside your walls. He was too drunk on the taste of your breast milk to care about anything else. Your back arched from the sensation of him teething your nipple to produce more milk. Toji took his fingers out of your pussy and massaged your right breast.
“Toji, that’s enough,” you breathed, using his hair to pull him away. Thankfully, he compiled and released your nipple with a pop sound, licking around his mouth to taste the last bits of your milk. “How was it?”
Toji had to close his eyes and reel in a deep breath. “I’m gonna drink from these tits every night until they stop producing milk.” He gathered your breasts in both large palms and kissed the tips. “Gonna put a baby in you again so I don’t die of thirst.”
You chuckled in disbelief and smacked his back. He stared lovingly at you and kissed your lips. You tasted nothing, really. “Mmm. You know, if you make me a big dinner afterwards, I’ll have more milk for our baby when he wakes up.”
He narrowed his eyes.
“What I’m saying is, you big buffoon, that whatever is left over now, is yours—ah!”
You clutched to the back of his hair as he started drinking again, pulling up to sit on his lap. His strong arms stayed wrapped around your waist, mouth glued to your sore, puffy nipple.
Sighing, you smiled and kissed the top of his head. “You’re a kinky idiot, Toji Zenin.”

When your Character is Insecure in their Relationship
Insecurities in a relationship stem from various causes, including low self-esteem and negative life experiences.
Signs of Insecurity in a Relationship
If you’re experiencing insecurity in a relationship, you may notice these signs:
Difficulty with intimacy: Especially in a new relationship, intimacy can be challenging for an insecure person, making this element of your dynamic feel problematic.
Jealousy: Perhaps the most common sign of insecurity in a relationship is jealousy. If you don’t trust them fully, you may feel insecure about your partner’s exes or tempted to check on their whereabouts constantly.
Low self-confidence: A lack of self-confidence—marked by negative self-talk and self-doubt—often bleeds into your relationship, making you rely on your partner for constant attention, reassurance, or validation.
Reacting strongly: Since insecurity stems from low self-worth, you may overreact to comments your partner makes that unintentionally trigger your sensitivities. For example, if you have an argument, you may feel tempted to break up with them to prevent future heartbreak. This self-sabotaging behavior is a defense mechanism.
How to Overcome Insecurities in a Relationship
If you have noticed an insecure attachment style developing in your relationship, follow these tips to start overcoming it:
Prioritize open communication. Talk frequently with your partner to ensure that you remain on the same page, which will alleviate concerns that they aren’t trustworthy and encourage you to communicate your needs.
Look at your relationship objectively. Try to evaluate any recent arguments you’ve had with your partner from an outside perspective. Consider the ways these challenges may have stemmed from one of your personal insecurities.
Try self-reflection. Try to locate the root of your low self-esteem in this relationship and identify your triggers. Developing this type of self-awareness will help you communicate with your partner and realize when an issue surfaces.
Practice self-love. To have a healthy relationship with someone else, you need to have a loving one with yourself. Try journaling, meditation, and other forms of self-care, like spending time with loved ones and doing activities you enjoy. As you value your time and interests more, your self-confidence will increase, encouraging you to show up as your authentic self in your relationship.
Work with a mental health professional. Consider speaking with a relationship expert or therapist on your own or with your partner. They will be able to point out how your mutual insecurities impact your relationship and advise you on how to overcome problems in the dynamic.
Causes of Insecurities in a Relationship
A variety of internal, external, and relational factors cause insecurities in a relationship.
Internally, insecurity stems from a lack of self-confidence and self-love, marked by feelings of unworthiness or incapability.
External factors causing feelings of insecurity in a relationship include negative past relationships or childhood experiences, especially ones that left you questioning your sense of self or feeling unable to trust others.
While these external factors may come from different periods of your life, a failure to resolve them will impact your relationship with your current partner.
Additionally, a lack of communication or a violation of trust in a current relationship can cause insecurities in the dynamic.
For example, if your partner cheats on you, you may feel plagued by the constant anxiety that they will do it again.

"Can you eat a pine tree" - Hearthian Food Exploration part 1
I'm in the middle of a deep dive investigating Hearthian food. Take the words of this post with a pinch of salt. Heh. Omg it's happening, I think this is my first expanded headcanon. I'm so excited. Theory crafting Heathians and their culture around food, sourcing ingredients and preparation techniques.
Disclaimer
So far, the presence of ghost matter wiping out non-aquatic lifeforms seems to limit the availability of hearthian diet to aquatic based life. That being said, it was long enough for Hearthian's to evolve, so let's just ignore inventing entire species for culture is outside a game dev's scope alright. I'm firing off ideas since I want to draw more food and it's raising a lot of curiosity. But that being said, having access to more creaturas opens a lot of doors. I must design one. Fish meat They eat fish. There's enough bodies of water on Timber Hearth to suggest the presence of a variety of freshwater lake and river fishy. We also have the entirety of Giant's Deep which is just an entire planet of sea. The large gravitational pull on that planet amplifies deep sea pressure. I'd like to think that anything coming out of that water would be evolved in such a way to adapt to these critical conditions. Lots of teeth, bioluminescence, blobby or flat bodies. Extra creepy looking. They're all evolved to be ambush predators to preserve energy. They grow really big. Catching one of these titans could feed the village for a week. Incidentally, I drew angler fish hotpot the other day. I imagine the Hearthian population is quite large. At some point you get a group of people risky enough to challenge the anglerfish. I think it'd be like a fairytale or generations of fish hunters who bring back this glory meat. But they can't do it in a flashy loud way, so they develop all this stealthy hunting gear designed to get them really close for the assassinate. HYAAH then they drag this big ass carcass back home through cold space that keeps it fresh.
Food preservation So at it's core food preservation is about dealing with the microorganisms in food, food preservation is finding ways to deal with them so they can't render our feed inedible. So with something like fish (meat, fruit etc.), you're looking to pull the moisture out, you'll see drying racks where they salt the stuff or leave it to hang in the open, you can bake stuff, or put it through a dehydrator. That's far too high tech. Similar techniques with salt (curing) or smoking foods, it's the same principal. Ingredients So we then have to ask, do they have access to edible salt? Primarily that's sodium chloride to us. For the sake of simplicity, Hearthians are surrounded by rocks, and they have good stomachs, so yeah, probably. Having access to salt opens up so many possibilities.
In a similar vein, a really common important ingredient for food is also sugar. The existence of Marshmallows suggests there's natural source. Just wandering around, I think most suitably would be honey, it wouldn't be too far removed to imagine bees on Timber Hearth. There'd be an abundance of flowers, actually I've talked myself into it just now. Bee keeping Hearthians is now in my head. We also know with fish you can boil bones for stocks and gelatine (the latter is also used in marshmallows, sweets and other desserts, not to mention the flexibility it affords us in cooking). And by extension I think natural flora that have fruit. With that and sugar you can make vinegar, which opens up pickling as another food preservation method - pickle fruit, veg, fish whatever. I've been imagining lots of wilds mushrooms and leafy things. The hardiness of Hearthians means they'd probably be more adventurous, even at risk of an upset tummy. There's just an abundance of potential here and I'm no mycology expert, but I do think when I come around to drawing more, focusing on incorporating more fungi is key to interesting dishes. It's so versatile, I think you could think of it like a tofu. Plus the colours and variety of shapes make for really interesting shapes to draw. What about vegetables? There's a lot of potential for naturally occurring vegetables. Which in turn leads to entire bodies of agriculture and options as a staple food. Root veg and leafy greens should be common in the wild. Though rice and grains to grow maybe? Pine trees So this is where I started this entire rabbit hole. I thought, well, they can't just survive off fish and marshmallows. Haha... Unless? Literally first question "can u eat tree bark" Turns out in some cases... yes. Kind of. The two models in game are more likely pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) and redwood pines (Sequoia sempervirens). Outside the usages of wood as we know it for buildings and spacecraft, as far as I could find, the edible bits are split into: cones needles bark sap nuts You can apparently boil the tight closed green female (???) cones to soften them and eat. But stay away from the barky stuff. It's old and wood like lol. Actually did you know pinecones make for great fire starters. Get a couple dry ones when you're camping and chuck them in. Needles, it's possible to make tea out them, random reddit comments say it tastes like juniper berries (like in gin). It's quite healthy too. Allegedly they have medicinal purposes else they're used for mulch (for fertilising plants). I always imagine Heathians to be careful for future generations like that. I found some posts talking about using the pine needles as a flavouring for smoking your fish, so potential here too. Bark. I really wanted some evidence of people just chewing on hunks of wood. You know like how a toddler monches on toy blocks. Turns out inner pine bark was used in something called bark bread. It was a starvation feed where they used the stuff to pad out the flour to make it go further. It didn't have much nutritional value so as soon as possible it was cut. Sap wine exists. Generally pine sap isn't used for food purposes. Who am I to question it. Actually far from it, I think if we start incorporating extra sugars (from root vegetables, wild flowers and fruits), the process of fermentation actually opens up so much. Alcohol, vinegar, heck if we start factoring in the potential for additional creatura, then we can have milk, therefore cheese, yogurts and stuff. You start combining all of that with plants and medicinal whatnot, we have the potential for cosmetics and medical products. Imagine that, hearthian makeup. So pine nuts are a classic. You can roast them, throw them on a salad, with fish and meats, turn them into a dessert. They're super versatile. For a treat you could turn it into flour. Super expensive, but maybe for big occasions - like a festival? I'm at the character limit. I'll be back.

Next year will be Big Tech’s finale. Critique of Big Tech is now common sense, voiced by a motley spectrum that unites opposing political parties, mainstream pundits, and even tech titans such as the VC powerhouse Y Combinator, which is singing in harmony with giants like a16z in proclaiming fealty to “little tech” against the centralized power of incumbents.
Why the fall from grace? One reason is that the collateral consequences of the current Big Tech business model are too obvious to ignore. The list is old hat by now: centralization, surveillance, information control. It goes on, and it’s not hypothetical. Concentrating such vast power in a few hands does not lead to good things. No, it leads to things like the CrowdStrike outage of mid-2024, when corner-cutting by Microsoft led to critical infrastructure—from hospitals to banks to traffic systems—failing globally for an extended period.
Another reason Big Tech is set to falter in 2025 is that the frothy AI market, on which Big Tech bet big, is beginning to lose its fizz. Major money, like Goldman Sachs and Sequoia Capital, is worried. They went public recently with their concerns about the disconnect between the billions required to create and use large-scale AI, and the weak market fit and tepid returns where the rubber meets the AI business-model road.
It doesn’t help that the public and regulators are waking up to AI’s reliance on, and generation of, sensitive data at a time when the appetite for privacy has never been higher—as evidenced, for one, by Signal’s persistent user growth. AI, on the other hand, generally erodes privacy. We saw this in June when Microsoft announced Recall, a product that would, I kid you not, screenshot everything you do on your device so an AI system could give you “perfect memory” of what you were doing on your computer (Doomscrolling? Porn-watching?). The system required the capture of those sensitive images—which would not exist otherwise—in order to work.
Happily, these factors aren’t just liquefying the ground below Big Tech’s dominance. They’re also powering bold visions for alternatives that stop tinkering at the edges of the monopoly tech paradigm, and work to design and build actually democratic, independent, open, and transparent tech. Imagine!
For example, initiatives in Europe are exploring independent core tech infrastructure, with convenings of open source developers, scholars of governance, and experts on the political economy of the tech industry.
And just as the money people are joining in critique, they’re also exploring investments in new paradigms. A crop of tech investors are developing models of funding for mission alignment, focusing on tech that rejects surveillance, social control, and all the bullshit. One exciting model I’ve been discussing with some of these investors would combine traditional VC incentives (fund that one unicorn > scale > acquisition > get rich) with a commitment to resource tech’s open, nonprofit critical infrastructure with a percent of their fund. Not as investment, but as a contribution to maintaining the bedrock on which a healthy tech ecosystem can exist (and maybe get them and their limited partners a tax break).
Such support could—and I believe should—be supplemented by state capital. The amount of money needed is simply too vast if we’re going to do this properly. To give an example closer to home, developing and maintaining Signal costs around $50 million a year, which is very lean for tech. Projects such as the Sovereign Tech Fund in Germany point a path forward—they are a vehicle to distribute state funds to core open source infrastructures, but they are governed wholly independently, and create a buffer between the efforts they fund and the state.
Just as composting makes nutrients from necrosis, in 2025, Big Tech’s end will be the beginning of a new and vibrant ecosystem. The smart, actually cool, genuinely interested people will once again have their moment, getting the resources and clearance to design and (re)build a tech ecosystem that is actually innovative and built for benefit, not just profit and control. MAY IT BE EVER THUS!

Firstly, I wanted to completely thank you for the important archiving work you're doing. With no ounce of irony I think you're doing immensely important work for the animation industry and fandom history that I'm very grateful for.
I wanted to ask if you could give any of us relatively newncomers any context on who Faust was, and what this falling out was/how it impacted viv's stories? It seemed they were a bit intertwined before whatever happened.
I don't mind answering these kind of questions, but I do want to be transparent. Since my focus has been on preserving Viv's art and work rather than learning about her personal life and relationships, this isn't my best subject. I tend to just absorb this information randomly along the way, and since I wasn't around at the time this stuff happened, I won't claim to be an expert.
I also want to make it clear that I don't actually consider it any of my business and don't feel it's my place to speculate or make assumptions about her relationships.
The best I can do is give you what random information I've come across that I feel is relevant to the fandom. So, I do advise you to take this with a grain of salt where sources aren't directly provided and I'm always open to being corrected if I'm wrong about something.
Viv and Faust were close friends in the 2010s and started RPing with Tyco and Angel in 2013 which is the year of Angel's creation. In my opinion, it's likely these RPs were very helpful and pivotal to the development of his character. It's sort of what RP is good for; getting to know your character by throwing them up against situations and characters that don't come from your own mind. So, in that sense, I do think Faust had some indirect impact on Angel Dust's development through the RPs.
I'm unsure when exactly the RPs ended, but I'm under the impression they ended a good amount of time prior to the development of the pilot.
Since Faust was Viv's friend, he wound up working on Hazbin Hotel during the pilot era. And these RPs could be found/seen by new and old fans alike, leading many to assume Tyco would be part of Hazbin Hotel. Eventually, Viv had to make a post clarifying Tyco was Faust's character and would not have anything to do with Hazbin Hotel.
The RPs were never meant to be canon as far as I can tell. My belief is they were simply good fun between good friends with no thought of permanency or impact on a larger fandom they frankly could not have seen coming.
In addition to being an illustrator for the pilot, Faust was placed in charge of the creation of the official Hazbin Hotel comics. He began to stream while working on official Hazbin material. During these streams, people would ask him questions and he would give answers that weren't always sanctioned by Viv.
From what I understand, during this time, Viv was so busy that she wasn't able to stream and provide content for her audience as much as she had before, so they latched onto these Faust streams as a source for official information. This is where a lot of pilot era fanon trends arose.
But none of this information was canon at the time. Faust may have had some insights that weren't available to the public but what had roots in that insight and what he pulled out of thin air during stream could not be determined.
In the end, all information garnered from the streams had to be denounced. So, any information from that source cannot be considered canon until it appears on screen.
In my opinion, I think Faust was working very hard and doing what he could to provide the audience with something to chew on while they were trying to get everything going for the pilot. I don't think there was any malicious intent or purposeful misinformation on his part. Just starved fans running wild with anything they could claw out of the crew.
He worked on the two official comics that were completed, but was also in the process of working on one featuring Vaggie, Charlie, and Helsa Von Eldritch. It was meant to be set in high school where Charlie and Vaggie had met for the first time. Obviously, this is no longer anywhere near canon and was never finished.
As far as the "falling out" between Viv and Faust goes - if one occurred - I'm in the dark. I don't know what happened and I don't consider it worth the research to find out. (That's time taken away from archiving the art.) But I do know that they were very civil to each other in the posts I did find about Faust leaving the project. Viv wished him luck on his next project and Faust responded professionally. Faust also gave several other reasons why he left which included moving and burnout.
While I found no posts that showcased frustration or anger at Viv*, there were posts about burnout and Faust had a hard time convincing fans of the show to stop emailing him. I've always assumed that if anything happened between Viv and Faust on a personal or professional level, it was settled privately.
The only important thing to know now is that Faust no longer works with Viv and past information derived from his streams cannot be considered canon.
*I'm not saying they don't exist, simply that I never found any. But I also never went out of my way to find these sorts of posts.
#modanswers#i wanted to find more sources to link but as i'm currently sick#it's a little bit too much effort rn to go through viv or faust's entire twitter to find them#i may edit them in the next time I'm going through viv's twitter and find them

That characteristic has made ephedrine-containing medications tightly controlled in North America and Europe. Even in Afghanistan, which has no such restrictions, it is difficult for drug producers to obtain enough of the chemical for the large-scale production of crystal meth. For them, the ephedra plant has been a game-changer, providing a cheap, local, and naturally abundant source of ephedrine. In turn, Afghanistan’s cities — and even its impoverished rural areas — are seeing a flood of crystal meth use and addiction.
Early on, this development garnered little sustained attention, either from law enforcement or international drug experts. But in a 2019 report on Afghanistan’s crystal meth industry, a team led by David Mansfield, an independent consultant and former fellow at the London School of Economics who has studied Afghanistan’s narco-economy for more than 20 years, outlined the far-ranging effects of ephedra’s new role. “The conditions are right for this industry to become deep-rooted,” Mansfield said in a recent interview.
Exploiting the plant’s natural abundance in certain areas of the country and the absence of central government control, ephedra is harvested and shipped by truck to open-air markets that are now dedicated to supplying the surging demand, according to the LSE report. Although the effects of ephedra harvesting in Afghanistan are still difficult to gauge, Mansfield suggested that in terms of scale and value “it is quite possible for the ephedra and meth industry to equal that of the opium and heroin economy.” The opium and heroin trade in Afghanistan is worth as much as $6.6 billion per year, according to a 2018 report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
presumably this is far from the only source of meth but pretty interesting

Thank you for writing up that post about the engagement of the alleged themes in campaign 3. I've seen the argument for them and honestly that plus some of the C3 stuff has almost made me feel weird playing a cleric in this setting. The implications just are so unfortunate if it really is the angle they're going for?
Hi anon,
So I have two thoughts on this. The first is that like...it's actually really difficult to make a story set in a fantasy world that deals with racism and colonialism because you have to develop fantasy racism and colonialism, which is a really fucking unpleasant headspace to exist in! And then, if you do, you have what I alluded to in tags on a different post today, where you will get people up in arms about how D&D or an actual play show or a fantasy work depicts orcs or goblins as racist or antisemitic stereotypes and then it's crickets when it comes to any real-world support of black or Jewish people. Chuck Klosterman said sci fi is philosophy for stupid people, and I disagree, but I do think speculative fiction is frequently sociology, anthropology, and geopolitics for stupid people, particularly if it's a setting with a lot of magic and fantasy races vs say, works like Butler's Patternist series, or a lot of Latin American magical realism, or (girl who just finished Disco Elysium voice) Disco Elysium, where there's a lot more grounding in our reality. I think this post covers the concept of real vs mythic, and I think the Critical Role stuff with the gods is in the realm of the mythic and people are trying to force it into a very human narrative. And yeah, the implications are really unfortunate if you do.
I think it's worth noting that a lot of high-profile (and beloved) TTRPG/AP projects from actual people from colonized cultures imagine a world in which they were never colonized (I am far from an expert but just off the top of my head: Coyote and Crow; Into the Motherlands; Desiquest; Islands of Sina Una) rather than make a story where a bunch of mostly white characters explain how they are the victims of colonization from two separate sources and only really focus on the one that's way less obvious and true but don't worry they're GONNA FIX IT, maybe, idk, should we open this door? I just don't know! golly gee this is tough!
The second related thought is just that D&D isn't a game that is well-suited to dismantling complex political structures either on a narrative or literal level and also it's pretend so you can do what you want forever. I mean don't call other people slurs while playing it but if we're talking in-world? I genuinely think that people who are unabashed murderhobos in D&D are often perfectly fine, generous, and lovely people in real life, and a lot of people who are like "I unionized the goblins! We're playing non-combat D&D! I de-escalate every situation" are often the sort of person to claim it's ableist to suggest that perhaps you should try to use reusable shopping bags. Like, are you living your values in your real life and capable of critical thought? then who cares if your D&D character is kind of a dick, or the show you are watching doesn't align perfectly with what you believe? And I find people who get overly hung up on how good and virtuous they are for their media consumption tend to be compensating for a lack, or at best a deep insecurity, about how they comport themselves in their real life.
so anyway yeah if the cast actually is like "yes i see this as a decolonialist work" I am going to have Thoughts and Pretty Harsh Critiques but to grant the CR cast the benefit of the doubt here, I think it's just...a mythic, epic scale story that draws from interesting sources (creation myths, the idea of a world created as an envious reflection by a sealed hunger) and didn't come together very well. I cannot extend that same benefit of the doubt to those fans who have argued otherwise, however.

Determined to use her skills to fight inequality, South African computer scientist Raesetje Sefala set to work to build algorithms flagging poverty hotspots - developing datasets she hopes will help target aid, new housing, or clinics.
From crop analysis to medical diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI) is already used in essential tasks worldwide, but Sefala and a growing number of fellow African developers are pioneering it to tackle their continent's particular challenges.
Local knowledge is vital for designing AI-driven solutions that work, Sefala said.
"If you don't have people with diverse experiences doing the research, it's easy to interpret the data in ways that will marginalise others," the 26-year old said from her home in Johannesburg.
Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent, and tech experts say young, home-grown AI developers have a vital role to play in designing applications to address local problems.
"For Africa to get out of poverty, it will take innovation and this can be revolutionary, because it's Africans doing things for Africa on their own," said Cina Lawson, Togo's minister of digital economy and transformation.
"We need to use cutting-edge solutions to our problems, because you don't solve problems in 2022 using methods of 20 years ago," Lawson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video interview from the West African country.
Digital rights groups warn about AI's use in surveillance and the risk of discrimination, but Sefala said it can also be used to "serve the people behind the data points". ...
'Delivering Health'
As COVID-19 spread around the world in early 2020, government officials in Togo realized urgent action was needed to support informal workers who account for about 80% of the country's workforce, Lawson said.
"If you decide that everybody stays home, it means that this particular person isn't going to eat that day, it's as simple as that," she said.
In 10 days, the government built a mobile payment platform - called Novissi - to distribute cash to the vulnerable.
The government paired up with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) think tank and the University of California, Berkeley, to build a poverty map of Togo using satellite imagery.
Using algorithms with the support of GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that uses AI to distribute cash transfers, the recipients earning less than $1.25 per day and living in the poorest districts were identified for a direct cash transfer.
"We texted them saying if you need financial help, please register," Lawson said, adding that beneficiaries' consent and data privacy had been prioritized.
The entire program reached 920,000 beneficiaries in need.
"Machine learning has the advantage of reaching so many people in a very short time and delivering help when people need it most," said Caroline Teti, a Kenya-based GiveDirectly director.
'Zero Representation'
Aiming to boost discussion about AI in Africa, computer scientists Benjamin Rosman and Ulrich Paquet co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba - a week-long gathering that started in South Africa - together with other colleagues in 2017.
"You used to get to the top AI conferences and there was zero representation from Africa, both in terms of papers and people, so we're all about finding cost effective ways to build a community," Paquet said in a video call.
In 2019, 27 smaller Indabas - called IndabaX - were rolled out across the continent, with some events hosting as many as 300 participants.
One of these offshoots was IndabaX Uganda, where founder Bruno Ssekiwere said participants shared information on using AI for social issues such as improving agriculture and treating malaria.
Another outcome from the South African Indaba was Masakhane - an organization that uses open-source, machine learning to translate African languages not typically found in online programs such as Google Translate.
On their site, the founders speak about the South African philosophy of "Ubuntu" - a term generally meaning "humanity" - as part of their organization's values.
"This philosophy calls for collaboration and participation and community," reads their site, a philosophy that Ssekiwere, Paquet, and Rosman said has now become the driving value for AI research in Africa.
Inclusion
Now that Sefala has built a dataset of South Africa's suburbs and townships, she plans to collaborate with domain experts and communities to refine it, deepen inequality research and improve the algorithms.
"Making datasets easily available opens the door for new mechanisms and techniques for policy-making around desegregation, housing, and access to economic opportunity," she said.
African AI leaders say building more complete datasets will also help tackle biases baked into algorithms.
"Imagine rolling out Novissi in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast ... then the algorithm will be trained with understanding poverty in West Africa," Lawson said.
"If there are ever ways to fight bias in tech, it's by increasing diverse datasets ... we need to contribute more," she said.
But contributing more will require increased funding for African projects and wider access to computer science education and technology in general, Sefala said.
Despite such obstacles, Lawson said "technology will be Africa's savior".
"Let's use what is cutting edge and apply it straight away or as a continent we will never get out of poverty," she said. "It's really as simple as that."

I’m in undergrad but I keep hearing and seeing people talking about using chatgpt for their schoolwork and it makes me want to rip my hair out lol. Like even the “radical” anti-chatgpt ones are like “Oh yea it’s only good for outlines I’d never use it for my actual essay.” You’re using it for OUTLINES????? That’s the easy part!! I can’t wait to get to grad school and hopefully be surrounded by people who actually want to be there 😭😭😭
Not to sound COMPLETELY like a grumpy old codger (although lbr, I am), but I think this whole AI craze is the obvious result of an education system that prizes "teaching for the test" as the most important thing, wherein there are Obvious Correct Answers that if you select them, pass the standardized test and etc etc mean you are now Educated. So if there's a machine that can theoretically pick the correct answers for you by recombining existing data without the hard part of going through and individually assessing and compiling it yourself, Win!
... but of course, that's not the way it works at all, because AI is shown to create misleading, nonsensical, or flat-out dangerously incorrect information in every field it's applied to, and the errors are spotted as soon as an actual human subject expert takes the time to read it closely. Not to go completely KIDS THESE DAYS ARE JUST LAZY AND DONT WANT TO WORK, since finding a clever way to cheat on your schoolwork is one of those human instincts likewise old as time and has evolved according to tools, technology, and educational philosophy just like everything else, but I think there's an especial fear of Being Wrong that drives the recourse to AI (and this is likewise a result of an educational system that only prioritizes passing standardized tests as the sole measure of competence). It's hard to sort through competing sources and form a judgment and write it up in a comprehensive way, and if you do it wrong, you might get a Bad Grade! (The irony being, of course, that AI will *not* get you a good grade and will be marked even lower if your teachers catch it, which they will, whether by recognizing that it's nonsense or running it through a software platform like Turnitin, which is adding AI detection tools to its usual plagiarism checkers.)
We obviously see this mindset on social media, where Being Wrong can get you dogpiled and/or excluded from your peer groups, so it's even more important in the minds of anxious undergrads that they aren't Wrong. But yeah, AI produces nonsense, it is an open waste of your tuition dollars that are supposed to help you develop these independent college-level analytical and critical thinking skills that are very different from just checking exam boxes, and relying on it is not going to help anyone build those skills in the long term (and is frankly a big reason that we're in this mess with an entire generation being raised with zero critical thinking skills at the exact moment it's more crucial than ever that they have them). I am mildly hopeful that the AI craze will go bust just like crypto as soon as the main platforms either run out of startup funding or get sued into oblivion for plagiarism, but frankly, not soon enough, there will be some replacement for it, and that doesn't mean we will stop having to deal with fake news and fake information generated by a machine and/or people who can't be arsed to actually learn the skills and abilities they are paying good money to acquire. Which doesn't make sense to me, but hey.
So: Yes. This. I feel you and you have my deepest sympathies. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to sit on the porch in my quilt-draped rocking chair and shout at kids to get off my lawn.

Wondering if you have any recommendations for learning about history? I really love the realism in your world building and am interested in learning about historical cultures and customs but I'm not sure where to start. Obviously this is a very broad topic but any pointers are appreciated.
Honestly the absolute best method is to go on mass wikipedia dives. Pick a singular historical topic and read through the article and click on links and related articles and read them too. And so on. Spiral. Have 900 tabs open.
Wikipedia isn't perfect but it can help you accumulate very broad strokes of background knowledge. Then you can supplement that with more thorough research- click on sources articles use, look for academic articles on the topic, look for primary sources. Also if you have any access to a library USE IT. Etc.
Developing a specialized/expert understanding in a topic requires a lot more, but when it comes to building like a broad knowledge base it kind of just comes down to being curious and taking these wide open opportunities to learn.

Seat of Prana Talon Abraxas
What is Prana?
"He who knows Prana knows Vedas" is the important declaration of the Srutis. You will find in Vedanta Sutras: "For the same reason, breath is Brahman." Prana is the sum total of all energy that is manifest in the universe. It is the sum total of all the forces in nature. It is the sum total of all latent forces and powers which are hidden in men and which lie everywhere around us. Heat, light, electricity, magnetism are the manifestations of Prana. All forces, all powers and Prana spring from the fountain or common source, 'Atman'. All physical forces and all mental forces come under the category 'Prana'. It is the force on every plane of being, from the highest to the lowest. Whatever moves or works or has life, is but an expression or manifestation of Prana. Akasa or ether also is an expression of Prana. The Prana is related to mind and through mind to will, and through will to the individual soul, and through this to the Supreme Being. If you know how to control the little waves of Prana working through the mind, then the secret of subjugating universal Prana will be known to you. The Yogi who becomes an expert in the knowledge of this secret, will have no fear from any power, because he has mastery over all the manifestations of powers in the universe. What is commonly known as power of personality is nothing more than being successful in life, more influential and fascinating than others. It is all due to the power of this Prana. Such people manipulate everyday, unconsciously of course, the same influence which the Yogi uses consciously by the command of his will. There are others who by chance tumble unaware of this Prana and use it for lower purposes under false names. This working of Prana is seen in the systolic and diastolic actions of the heart, when it pumps the blood into arteries in the action of inspiration and expiration during the course of breathing; in the digestion of food; in the excretion of urine and faecal matter; in the manufacture of semen, chyle, chyme, gastric juice, bile, intestinal juice, saliva; in closing and opening of the eyelids, in walking, playing, running, talking, thinking, reasoning, feeling and willing. Prana is the link between the astral and physical body. When the slender thread-link Prana is cut off, the astral body separates from the physical body. Death takes place. The Prana that was working in the physical body is withdrawn into the astral body.
This Prana remains in a subtle, motionless, unmanifested, undifferentiated state during the cosmic Pralaya. When the vibration is set up, Prana moves and acts upon Akasa, and brings forth the various forms. The macrocosm (Brahmanda) and microcosm (Pindanda) are combinations of Prana (energy) and Akasa (matter).
That which moves the steam-engine of a train and a steamer, that which makes the aeroplanes fly in air, that which causes the motion of the breath in lungs, that which is the very life of this breath itself, is Prana. I believe, you have now a comprehensive understanding of the term Prana about which you had a very vague conception in the beginning.
By controlling the act of breathing you can efficiently control all the various motions in the body and the different nerve-currents that are running through the body. You can easily and quickly control and develop body, mind and soul through breath control or the control of Prana. It is through Pranayama that you can control your circumstances and character, and can consciously harmonise the individual life with the cosmic life.
The breath, directed by thought under the control of the will, is a vitalising, regenerating force which you can utilise consciously for self-development; for healing many incurable diseases in your system; for healing others and for other various useful purposes.
It is within your easy reach at every moment of your life. Use it judiciously. Many Yogins of yore, like Sri Jnanadeva, Trailinga Swami, Ramalinga Swami and others, had utilised this breath, this force, the Prana, in a variety of ways. You can also do so, if you practise Pranayama by prescribed breathing exercises. It is Prana that you are breathing rather than the atmospheric air. Inhale slowly and steadily with a concentrated mind. Retain it as long as you can do it comfortably. Then exhale slowly. There should be no strain in any stage of Pranayama. Realise the occult inner life-powers which underlie the breath. Become a Yogi and radiate joy, light and power all around you.
Pranavadins or Hatha Yogins consider that Prana Tattva is superior to Manas Tattva, the mind principle. They say, Prana is present even when the mind is absent during sleep. Hence Prana plays a more vital part than the mind. If you go through the parables in Kaushitaki and Chhandogya Upanishads, when all the Indriyas, mind and Prana fight amongst themselves as to their superiority, you will find that Prana is regarded as the highest of all. Prana is the oldest, for it starts its functioning from the very moment the child is conceived. On the contrary, the organs of hearing, etc., begin to function only when their special abodes, viz., the ears, etc., are formed. Prana is called Jyestha and Sreshtha (oldest and best) in Upanishads. It is through the vibrations of psychic Prana that the life of the mind, Sankalpa or thinking, is kept up and thought is produced. You see, hear, talk, sense, think, feel, will, know, etc., through the help of Prana and therefore Srutis declare: "Prana is Brahman."
SEAT OF PRANA
The seat of Prana is heart. Though the Antahkarana is one, yet it assumes four forms, viz., (i) Manas, (ii) Buddhi, (iii) Chitta and (iv) Ahamkara, according to the different functions it performs. Likewise, though Prana is one, it assumes five forms viz., (1) Prana, (2) Apana, (3) Samana, (4) Udana and (5) Vyana, according to the different functions it performs. This is termed as Vritti Bheda. The principal Prana is called Mukhya Prana. The Prana, joined with Ahamkara, lives in the heart. Of these five, Prana and Apana are the chief agents.
The seat of Prana is the heart; of Apana, the anus; of Samana, the region of the navel; of Udana, the throat; while Vyana is all-pervading. It moves all over the body.
SUB-PRANAS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Naga, Kurma, Krikara, Devadatta and Dhananjaya are the five sub-Pranas.
The function of Prana is respiration; Apana does excretion; Samana performs digestion; Udana does deglutition (swallowing of the food). It takes the Jiva to sleep. It separates the astral body from the physical body at the time of death; Vyana performs circulation of blood.
Naga does eructation and hiccup. Kurma performs the function of opening the eyes. Krikara induces hunger and thirst. Devadatta does yawning. Dhananjaya causes decomposition of the body after death. That man is never reborn, whenever he may die, whose breath goes out of the head, after piercing the Brahmarandhra.
THE COLOUR OF PRANAS
Prana is said to be of the colour of blood, red gem or coral. Apana, which is in the middle, is of the colour of Indragopa (an insect of white or red colour). Samana is of the colour between that of pure milk or crystal or of oily and shining colour, i.e., of something between both Prana and Apana. Udana is of Apandura (pale white) colour and that of Vyana resembles the colour of archil (or that of ray of light).
THE LENGTH OF THE AIR-CURRENTS
This body of Vayu is 96 digits (6 feet) in length as a standard. The ordinary length of the air-current, when exhaled is 12 digits (9 inches). In singing, its length becomes 16 digits (1 foot), in eating it comes to 20 digits (15 inches), in sleeping 30 digits (22 inches), in copulation 36 digits (27 inches) and in doing physical exercise it is much more than that. By decreasing the natural length of the expired air-currents (from 9 inches), life is prolonged and by increasing the current, duration of life is decreased.
THE CENTRING OF THE PRANA
Inhaling the Prana from outside, filling the stomach with it, centre the Prana with the mind, in the middle of the navel, at the tip of the nose, and at the toes, during the 'Sandhyas' (sunrise and sunset) or at all times. Thus the Yogi is freed from all diseases and fatigues. By centring this Prana at the tip of the nose he obtains mastery over the elements of the air; by centring at the middle of his navel, all diseases are destroyed; by centring at the toes, his body becomes light. He who drinks air through the tongue destroys his fatigue, thirst and many other diseases. For him who drinks the air with his mouth, during the two Sandhyas and the last two hours of the night, within three months, the auspicious Sarasvati (Goddess of speech) is present in his Vak (speech), i.e., he becomes eloquent and learned. In six months he is free from all diseases. Drawing the air at the root of the tongue, the wise man thus drinking nectar enjoys all prosperity.

Top AMVs of 2024 - 30 - 21
A more in-depth breakdown of what I am doing can be found here, but if you just want to get to the main entries then:
30. Cuff It by uv catastrophe (fray-adjacent)
youtube
Audio: Cuff It by Beyoncé
Visuals: Reunion: The Sound of the Providence
There are two words that best sum up this vid: fun and flirty. The source material seems concerned with a grand adventure of some kind, but this vid is more focused on the journey and small bits in between the action set-pieces.
Each member of the trio gets loving focus for a verse. Lots of attention is given to hitting all the sexual innuendos of the song, with my fave moment being the intense close ups of a hand tracing the outlines of a wall for a more innocent type of opening. The editing is similarly loose and relaxed while keeping the pacing engaging and energized. This is one of my favorite types of tribute because it is so easy just to see what individual moments and expressions the editor themselves loves. By the end, I was just as charmed with this polycule as I expect the fans are.
29. Pink Friday by FallChild42
youtube
Audio: Friday Night from The Yakuza 0 Soundtrack
Visuals: Revolutionary Girl Utena
I participated in an MMV exchange this summer, and there were so many cool and creative vids made for it, so beware this is just the first off the list. I know FallChild42/Dr. Dinosaur for his comedy vids and only heard a few stray comments about what he had planned for his giftee, so I didn’t know what to expect. But it certainly wasn’t for him to go all out for a motions graphics lyric video.
Utena and Yakuza are two series I love, but I never thought to cross them like this until he pulled it off. Suddenly I was like, “yes Utena deserves all the fun friday night parties, yes please.” The editing is both professional and slick, yet expressive and charming (especially with her little dance). A lot of the fun from exchanges is watching friends go the extra mile for each other. With such impressive tech work and clear joy and affection for his frequent collaborator/friend Ileia, it is difficult to walk away form this vid without a smile.
28. Bonnie & Clara by Camichan19
youtube
Audio: Runaway by Against the Current
Visuals: Princess Jellyfish
I came up in amv fandom from the side focused on making their paper dolls kiss (regardless if they interacted in canon or not), so I a sucker for just a good romance amv that knows what it is doing. And what do you know, Camichan19 is an expert in exactly that.
Pacing is one of those rarely spoken about, pretty vague elements of editing. You can use a metronome file or the waveform but when it comes down to choosing when and where to cut, especially on a scene by scene level, there’s only so much guidance anyone can give. Yet Camichan19 always seems like she knows exact the perfect place to make the cleanest cuts. Her smart and subtle scene selection in this vid specifically shines in how she is able to use Princess Jellyfish’s comedic moments for actually romantic development. This vid doesn’t make me laugh out loud, but it does make me smile in how it show that even these goofy slapstick moments do build something real and important between our two leads.
27. Transcend-Dandy Cha Cha Cha by Aqua Sky Productions
youtube
Audio: Transcendental Cha Cha Cha by Tom Cardy
Visuals: Space Dandy
Tom Cardy has been supplying a good portion of the amv community’s comedy audio for the past few years now. Honestly, you could make a panel purely of Tom Cardy amvs, and a part of me is worried the bubble is gonna burst before I can get my own ideas out. When his new album dropped with its own animated music video for this song, a part of me imagined it was some sort of challenge on his part to see how a inter-dimension dance party could get reinterpreted as anything else. But Aqua Sky Productions rose up to that challenge and knocked it out of the park. Of all the lyric sync I expected in this vid, I was not expecting the “french dandy” line to get something.
But most of all, I admire she was able to capture the over-the-top party attitude without simply recreating the original mv. In contrast to its existential horror, Aqua has most of the characters role with the punches as long as they have a place to rave. It’s more tongue-in-cheek in comparison to most dance vids, but the more lowkey humor makes it a fun party anyone feels like they could join.
26. MEDUSA by JAKEH (CW: Sexual Assault)
youtube
Audio: Follow You Into the Dark from Alan Wake II Soundtrack
Visuals: Heavenly Delusion + Multisource
I say this not to disparage any of the many dedicated coordinators we have in our community, but I feel like we’re still in the figuring out stage of grappling with amvs focused on more heavy and sensitive topics. Considering the public nature of much of the con circuit it is understandable to limit showings to all ages material, and I understand staff that does not feel equipped or does not want to engage with such topics for personal reasons. Still even in NFSW spaces, sexual assault tends to be the one line drawn (probably because going from horny hentai shenanigans to that and back is a hell of a tone whiplash). I like to emphasize that the con circuit is not the end all be all of amvs, and several people involved in the space (including myself) have taken the time to tackle the subject. However, it feels like many vids that want to seriously grapple with it are forced to live in the dark.
All this to say, if you care about grounded depictions of sexual violence, then MEDUSA is one of the best amvs tackling the subject around. Where it shines is not just communicating the literal events, but representing the feelings of our protagonist. After the drop we get gorgeous composition and composition filled with rage, grief, and profound bodily alienation. I don’t believe the most sensitive depictions are the ones that are the least explicit like some folks, but there is a lot more power and creative control for JAKEH by going this abstract route in a visual medium like amvs.
The ending itself also really gets at the reality of the subject for most victims. While our protagonist does get relief and release in the comfort and support of their loved one, there is also the harsh reality of having to live with the knowledge their assailant is likely simply living their life without any comparable consequences. It’s a harsh truth too many survivors have to face, but in the end, it is this vid’s unflinching stare head on at the subject that gives its dignity and weight.
25. Welcome to the Glam Dungeon🔥👄 by Abyssbreaking Studios
youtube
Audio: The Glam Kitchen 🔥👄 Sopita de coditos by Shiadanni
Visuals: Dungeon Meshi
Who’s hungry for a bite? This amv is not my first encounter with the glam kitchen, but I was nervous about the audio would translate for a vid, as most of the humor comes from the delivery of a dramatic Mexican diva.
The solution, make the delivery of the audio through the text part of the joke. While Kia doesn’t skimp out on adding jokes in through Marcille’s funniest moments, her subtitles are the star of the show. There legible and easy to read while having plenty of cute and charming flourishes (my fave is the custom Falin emoji). Overall it recreates the fun of many viral cooking videos, basking in the vibes and energy as the real work goes on in the background, in a way I didn’t imagine possible in the form of an amv. Kia’s enthusiasm and energy overall cooks up a tasty treat for us viewers.
24. a heart’s a heavy burden by Biotic
youtube
Audio: Medusa by Kailee Morgue
Visuals: Fruits Basket 2019
Rin is one of my faves of Fruits Basket and I’ve adored this particular song for years. The only way a vid with this combo could be more up my alley is if a creative editor like the BioticAMVS was the one to edit with it. Really no matter what source she works with, Biotic always adds her own unique compositions and visual flair to create amvs with very particular singular visions.
And as a fan of the sources, I really love the extra meaning created here. It is telling that the positive memories are layered in a mosaic-like haze, once good ones are shattered, broken, and ruined while the only thing Rin sees clearly is her own pain. Casting Tohru as “Medusa,” the figure that turns her to stone, is such an interesting choice that demonstrates just how much what it is that paralyzes her is something internal as much as her external circumstances. It is a nice treat for fans, but wrapped up in tight sync that can be enjoyed by anyone.
23. Curtain Call - by BanjoKazooie64Fan (James Blond)
youtube
Audio: When the Curtain Falls by Tessa Violet
Visuals: Perfect Blue
Perfect Blue is one of those intensely iconic pieces of art the imagery takes a life of its own. But rather than focus on stalkers and doppelgangers, James took the time to focus in on Perfect Blue lady’s quiet loneliness.
It is a unique and creative take on the source, as most Perfect Blue amvs aren’t all that character focused, (and even after watching the movie less than 3 years ago, she is still “Perfect Blue lady” in my head) but it is one that works wonders. By cutting out most of the thriller elements, it really emphasizes how even before the bodies started piling up, this was a young vulnerable woman getting eaten up by the industry with seemingly no support system at all. The scene of her fantasizing about talking with friends over near silence at 0:56 is so powerful in its dissonance, emphasizing how it really is a fantasy since it “breaks” most amv rules. I also like the cut of her staring blankly in the middle of directing the night club scene at 1:56. There is this running theme of almost watching life happen to other people around her, pulling so much depth and emotion I am not used to feeling about a character at all.
22. Retro Never Ends by Roseclipse AMV (Ophelia)
youtube
Audio: World on Wheels by Duckwrth
Visuals: Yu Yu Hakusho
Last year, a studio by the name AMV Clamp (since then renamed Roseclipse AMV) came on to the scene with killer taste in anime and a strong editing voice/style. They were my rookies of the year for 2023, with Ophelia being a particular prevalent member. I loved her mmv work last year, so when she participated in the summer mmv exchange I mentioned earlier, I was excited to see what she would pull together.
With its bright color palette and paper edge borders, Retro Never Ends oozes style. For a medium where ever inch of movement is costing you loads of time and effort, the vid is so energetic, lively, and slick. There are so many great standout motions, such as the flying animation at 0:31 and the Botan mask at 0:47, but a more subtle element I admire is how Ophelia is not afraid to play with the aspect ratio. At moments like 0:16 and 0:42, you can clear see the edges of the original manga panels. But the brisk pace and smart scene composition turns the negative space from a distraction and into another nice visual flourish. Frankly when it comes to amount of polished tech work per a frame, this vid might get you some of the best bang for your buck on this list.
21. First Measure by Xophilarus
youtube
Audio: Magik Mike - Shake If Off but Taylor Swift stays up WAY too late (Shake Off Those Notes), Shittyflute - Love Story, Tom Wallace's arrangement of Shake It Off.
Visuals: Hibike Euphorium
I don’t know when “Shake It Off” became the default Taylor Swift meme song, but I’ll never get tired of “nothing in my brain,” as a punchline. Xophilarus’ commitment to the bit here is to be admired. They are dedicated to syncing every off note, using ever zoom, speed ramp, or flourish to accentuate some truly awful musical moments.
And while for some folks, two and a half minutes of that might be more grating than entertaining, what really ties it together for me is the underlining story-line of these kids trying to put on a half decent performance. I’m not used to getting emotionally invested in comedy amvs, but it is funnier and more compelling to highlight these smiling cheerful faces thinking they absolutely nailed it while the crowd looks on in horror. While their eventual triumph is still tongue in cheek, I genuinely felt proud of them.
