Hey, also, all the anarchist shit aside, tomorrow I want you to make something.
I forced myself to draw something after the 2016 election. I forced myself to draw something when my mother died in 2018. I forced myself to draw something when my spouse was hospitalized for multiple organ failure in 2021.
When you are miserable, make something. Add a row to your project, bake a box cake, draw on a sheet of lined paper, write a poem on a napkin, fold an origami shirt out of a dollar bill, make your favorite recipe for dinner, but make something with your hands, something that you can hold and look at engage your senses in.
It won't fix the world, but it will change the world. You will have made something that didn't exist before. You will have impacted your reality, even in a very small way. And it is going to be something you made *after.* Something bad happened, something shook you, and you made something after, in spite of it.

just like magic - tell me about yourself and what you like to do, but this time, send in a character, and i’ll assume what kind of gift they’d get you.
i’m really into reading and writing, crochet and like artsy projects too, photography and movies, i figure skate, and i’m way into agricultural stuff!
just like magic
this is my pookie you guys so this is a special order. merry christmas eve, if you celebrate christmas, and happy holidays to all!
ponyboy makes you literally so many things. he’ll write multiple poems, and use it as wrapping paper, make you little origami horses, cows—you name it, he’ll make it.
johnny tries to get you some yarn. it’s a little thank you for everything you’ve done. maybe crochet him a little blanket. he needs it.
dally steals art supplies. he’ll steal pencils, sketchbooks, erasers, markers, literally anything. he may shit on you for it, but if you ever stop your art, he’ll punch a hole in the wall. figuratively. maybe.
sodapop, and call it cliché, but he gets you a music box. with a little figure skating scene in the centre.
darry buys anything you offhandedly mention once, but he deems you really need. he always spends the second half of the year saving up for gifts.
two-bit picks up a nice rock and wraps it. that’s your gift. throw it at whoever you want!
steve tries to take these little photos of things that remind him of you, and spent the whole year on the gift, only for all of the photos to be ruined in some way. oopsie!

Butterflies and the way Love shapes us:
While paperfolding existed back around the year 600 with Chinese influence and their strides in papermaking, it didn’t take off much until the 1600s and finally adopting the name Origami from the words “Ori (folded)” and “Kami (paper)”. The ability to acquire quality paper and learn the folding techniques was an opportunity only available to wealthier people, so the practice remained fairly isolated from 600 until the Edo Period. Through a lens of environmental reverence and respect, the development and use of Washi Paper is in itself an outward appreciation of the natural environment. The dedication and care that went into the evolution of the type of paper, experimenting to make it stronger, smoother, and more colorful over time is a direct labor of love to the world it came from and the art that it will create.
I’m going to make a little post about what I know about the creation and practice of making washi paper by hand because it’s very interesting and very poignant to the entire idea of humanity and nature’s interconnectedness! For now, check out the read more :3
Back to it, the original instances of origami were ceremonial in nature, whether they were folded fans for the upper class, designs to accompany gifts for weddings, or folded religious offerings. One of these such weddings gifts is folded butterflies accompanied with bottles of alcohol, referenced in a poem near the late 1600s as well as some early published books including ceremonial paperfolding techniques for them, which are often meant to represent the bride and groom, as well as butterflies themselves being recognized culturally as carriers of souls (more on that later!). The Mecho and Ocho butterflies for the bride and groom respectively were gifted. Today, there are many other ways to fold butterflies for recreational purposes, but for now I’ll share the traditional Mecho and Ocho gifts:

Here’s the front of the Mecho butterfly (dark blue) and the Ocho butterfly (light blue), the pattern I used was from https://origami-resource-center.com/formal-mecho/

Here’s the (mostly) front again, these butterflies are of a pretty average size.

This is the back! The folding techniques follow the same beginning steps before changing only slightly, so they match at the back <3

Butterflies represent spiritual connections, whether they are thought of as literally embodying the soul of a diseased loved one or just acting as a representation of one’s soul. There are other interpretations of a butterfly’s presence that act more like omens both good and bad, but regardless of continuity the butterfly is spiritually significant. This will be the first of many times that a creature is thought of as divine in the lens of Japanese culture and then celebrated through the arts, but this particular example is one that encourages the people of Japan to respect even the insects which may cross their paths. It's this foundational reverence that works so well in bridging the gap many members of humanity have with nature, something subtle but powerful like the simple gift of a folded butterfly to remind us we are shaped by the nature around us, just as we shape it. Just as the white butterflies wander into our homes and hearts after we settle in their old fields. I’m sure I’ll bring this text up again in another post, but William Cronon in Uncommon Ground: Rethinking the Human Place in Nature has a line that will remain true throughout the future origami projects:
“The tree in the garden is in reality no less other, no less worthy of our wonder and respect, than the tree in an ancient forest that has never known an ax or a saw-even though the tree in the forest reflects a more intricate web of ecological relationships” (Cronon, 88).
This wonder that's further elaborated by Cronon remains strong within the culture of these people because they do not see tiers of nature more divine than the rest as we often see it further westward, it’s all divine. It’s all worthy of respect. And if it’s all divine and worthy and here in our own backyards, then it becomes so much easier to love as an extension of ourselves rather than a resource, a means to an end. Because how can we ever see the butterflies that bind our souls in love as just a means to an end?

You ever get the feeling that sometimes the universe thinks the time is right for a specific project?
Earlier this week, heavily inspired both by @rattusrattus3 and their collage box youtube tutorial, and the gorgeous corvid boxes posted by @korva-the-raven, I decided to make something similar myself. THE DAY AFTER that decision was made I found this wooden chocolate box in a charity shop for £1.99. It could not be more perfect for purpose.

I had been thinking the collage part would be difficult as I "don't really keep interesting bits of paper." As it turns out, the hell I don't.
That same evening I found this stash in my old art folder. I thought all I had in there were a couple of greetings cards.

Of particular use were the William Blake and Exploring the Gothic art exhibition guides. These are both really high quality prints and contain some gorgeous artwork. Thankfully I have a paper guillotine so I could cut out the pictures really neatly.

This is what I ended up with. I could make several boxes just from these!

Korva's boxes have individual compartments made out of matchboxes which are also decorated. I don't have any matchboxes, but then I recalled that I know how to make an origami box - I had a friend in school who was Japanese and her mother taught me. So, what if I was able to find some nice paper and make small boxes to go inside? Again, the universe provided...

These are from a pad of scrapbooking paper, 24 double sided sheets, 30x30cm (12x12 inches) for £4. Very thick and high quality and excellent for making sturdy boxes that are fit for this purpose. I didn't love all of it but these designs are beautiful, and I will have more than enough for this project and tons left for the future 😁
I thought to save it looking too "busy" I would just use one plain colour and one floral. Since the internal boxes need to be quite small I thought a smaller print would work best, and paired that with a plain purple. I used the guillotine again to cut the paper into squares that were the right size (after a trial run with some cartridge paper to make sure they would fit) and...

This box is super easy to do, probably why I still remember how to make it after being taught at the age of 5! Here's a tutorial.
Meanwhile the outer box got a couple of coats of black acrylic paint.

Then it was time to decide how to arrange my collage pieces. I quickly came up with this for the inside (Edgar Allan Poe themed, the large picture is an illustration to "The Raven" which is super appropriate for a corvid box, and the small one in the top right has lines from the poem "Lenore"). I'm still unsure about whether I will also do the base as its going to be covered most of the time anyway. I may just line it with more of the floral paper.

The outside was harder, but I've gone with some anatomical drawings, plus a couple of space-fillers which look pretty.

The edges are a little narrow so I'm not going to collage those for now, but I might see if any of the charms from my shiny things box would look good glued onto the sides instead.
Unfortunately I can't finish it just yet, as the only thing I haven't been able to get is modge podge - every shop I went into said "we used to have that but don't stock it anymore". So I ordered some online and I should have it within a few days.
Then all I'll need to do is decide how I want to fill it, I have lots of items to choose from 😁
Huge thanks to those who inspired this, it has been a project that I've absolutely loved, and I'm going to be on the lookout for more nice boxes so I can make another, I still have plenty of supplies!

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: The Residents by Matthew J. Friday
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/the-residents-by-matthew-j-friday/
The Residents begins with the author’s arrival at the height of the COVID pandemic and explores his new #life as a US resident. The #poems reflect on this new journey and study what being a resident means for other people, flora and fauna. While #Oregon’s inhabitants and #landscape form the basis of many poems, others explore residency in a wider sense, crossing borders near and far away.
Matthew James Friday is a British born writer and teacher. He has an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmith College, University of London. He has had many poems published in US and international journals from all corners of the world. He has published numerous micro-chapbooks with the Origami Poems Project (US). Matthew is a Pushcart Prize nominated poet. The Residents is his first chapbook. More of his writing can be found at: http://matthewfriday.weebly.com
PRAISE FOR The Residents by Matthew J. Friday
We have been honored to publish Matthew Friday‘s poetry. So I am delighted to celebrate this chapbook of his poems—rich in imagery, voice, and a delightful playfulness with language. The poems connect the conscious mind with the heart ( what Mary Oliver says poetry can do).
–Kimberly Hill Campbell, Editor of Oregon English Journal
The Residents challenges me to look into the world and to realize that I’m connected to it. With depth and weight, Friday’s lyrics exalt the ordinary natural world into something I can grapple and hum with. The Residents is a subtle hurricane of poems that illuminate the mysteries and paradoxes we all might experience while getting a haircut or visiting a pumpkin field, wondering why. Friday writes from a place high above, encompassing all that the land has to offer, yet not so high that he misses pumpkin seeds, hummingbirds, and Easter eggs. These poems are offerings my soul gladly accepts. In the Residents, Friday brings the reader through a glorious expedition of the natural world and that which transcends it. His poems paint lucid images of the natural, while inviting the reader to contemplate the unknown. These poems are a call for awareness in a world that might be too sleepy to wake up. I’ve been a reader of Matthew’s poetry for years, and this collection is his best yet.
–Mike Leyland, School Library Media coordinator, Craven County Schools.
Matthew’s collection of poetry, The Residents, connects the reader with the beauty and power of the natural world, the strangeness of modern life and our alternately sweet or disconnected fellow human beings. He writes with empathy and self-awareness of all he encounters, finding poetic elements in the smallest gestures and actions, as well as the ancient forces of the planet that will outlast us and our temporary dramas. Desperate migrants, unfair privilege, flying birds, rushing water, random hardship, bureaucratic paperwork, a child’s joy in jumping in puddles, unexpected connections between people from different parts of the world—all combine to capture the imagination and stimulate recognition of our shared humanity. Classical literary and mythological references flow through the observations of physics and earth science juxtaposed with human actions, both positive and negative, that in the end are only momentary. Above all, Matthew’s words capture fleeting moments that make life more beautiful in the midst of our current world.
–Vivienne Blake,Librarian, EF Academy New York

Hey cutieee <3333 don't worry AT ALL about not answering right away. I had read that you were sick and I was waiting for you to get better before sending another ask anyway!!! I feel like I'm high and also miserably not functioning every time I'm sick, so I really REALLY understand that!!!
OMG your sister is not NOT right about Italians, you know LOL although this trick would work better in the south, or by the coast. Here's my advice that should cover pretty much all of us: talk coffee and wine!!!! LMAO
Ohhhhh I'm SOOOOO into poetry I love so so so many poets. One of my favorites has to be Mary Oliver. Cliché? Maybe. But I love her. And I also love Wislawa Szymborska. Some good ol' Italian Giacomo Leopardi is a sad, existential one I always recommend too LOL and another Italian one who recently passed away (😢) is Patrizia Cavalli. Love her poems a lot!!!! and I'm also soooooooo into symbolism. Baudelaire. Rimbaud. Verlaine. But mostly Baudelaire. And the romantics OMG love them too. Wordsworth, little darling of mine, take me on the coach with you while you cross the bridge and write the most beautiful poem ever thank you very much!!!! (You can tell I'm particularly into poetry, can't you? LOL) You talked about being the most basic bitch, but look at the basic bitch that I am!!!!!!!
Awww OFC YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR BOOKBINDING BECAUSE *YOU* *MADE* *IT* !!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T YOU FEEL SATISFIED? DONT YOU FEEL A LITTLE BIT HEALED? I LOVE HANDMADE THINGS (I have soooo many hobbies revolving around this for one reason LOL)
Music and books >>>>> (and I would personally add movies, too. The Holy Trinity to me!!!!) That was an unfair question, I know. I apologize. You gave me artsy vibes too and I was curious about getting to explore this some farther!!!
Ooooh mirrorball, I relate. What you said, I relate to it!!!!!
OMG YOU CAN DRAW??????? 😭😭😭😭😭 CHARCOAL DRAWINGS??????? I *LOVE* THAT!!!!!! THIS IS SO COOL (I'm very much like Taylor when it comes to this, I'm very much *Stars. Do u like dem?* LOL)
I get that music-train thing. Cuz same LOL actually, living alone (well, not now cuz in back to my hometown for the holidays, but in general), I do listen to music A LOT. I listen to it when I cook, when I eat, when I clean my apartment, when I shower, when I do hobbies that don't involve sounds (I play instruments, I sing, I watch movies, I make silly little directing projects), such as crocheting or sewing or reading or embroidery or origami or some really fucked-up ugly painting cuz I'd feel the need to paint and then remember I'm really bad at it only midway and a full breakdown through it LOL
Anywayyyyy new questions:
First of all, are you feeling better? I really hope you are!!!! 🫶🫶🫶
Gonna go with some easier, faster this-or-that questions this time: tea or coffee? Sea or mountain? Sunflowers or roses? Tulips or chrysanthemums? Willow tree or cactus? Ice cream or popsicles? Sweet or salty breakfast? The Archer or Afterglow? Daylight or I forgot that you existed? 1989 vaults or fearless vaults? Red vaults or speak now vaults? Nail polish: yes or no? Folkmore photo shooting or midnights?
- Your Deer Santa 🦌🎅☃️
you know what i DO love talking about coffee… i shall try this on my milano trip 😙
i love that!!!!! i’ve been trying to read poetry in italian but my language aptitude is clearly not high enough because i just end up being so confused everytime 😭😭 oh baudelaire… such a fine poet. i’ve studied him so much in high school 😭 then it was verlaine they kept shoving down our throats again and again in my first year at uni lmaoo. my favorite work by baudelaire is definitely petits poèmes en prose (all hail the inventor of prose poetry). my literary love has been rimbaud since i was really young though! i have so many versions of his works, and i feel particularly close to him because my aunt lives where he grew up and wrote most of his poetry haha. my favorite poets altogether would probably be him, mallarmé and éluard. i got really into neruda and nicanor as well when i studied spanish literature. i feel like poetry is the one literary domain where you can’t be a basic bitch because there’s a reason the greats are so revered tbh
lmaoo i would say i can draw! everyone in my family is so talented when it comes to drawing so i’m nothing special lolol but i do love a good drawing! also i doubt you can’t draw! one of my professors who was a specialist of children’s literature always told us that most of the time when we think we can’t draw it’s because we can’t draw in a certain style (realism being the prime example). she digitalized a bunch of drawings that students who claimed they couldn’t draw did, added color, and it turned out it looked really good as illustrations for poetry books or kids’ books!
you play instruments and sing? that’s so cool!!! i’m so jealous!!! what do you play? what do you sing? 👀
1 - gradually getting better but yes!!! i still have a cough but i no longer feel like im on my death bed lmaoo
2 - tea or coffee (sorry italyyy)? Sea or mountain? Sunflowers or roses? Tulips or chrysanthemums? Willow tree or cactus? Ice cream or popsicles? Sweet or salty breakfast? The Archer or Afterglow? Daylight or I forgot that you existed? 1989 vaults or fearless vaults? Red vaults or speak now vaults? Nail polish: yes or no? Folkmore photo shooting or midnights?
these are such 👀👀 questions actually, what about you??? just realized i haven’t even asked you your favorite songs 😭😭 so tell me your favorites!!! hehe

This was another development that i did and with this one i decided to add projection again and play around with words. I folded a origami fortune teller and the reason why i chose that is because there’s a lot of folds and hidden compartments and its complicated like a heart. I projected the words open and close like a shop and folded and unfolded the origami to show vulnerability, with it closed you can only see so much and when it’s open you can see all the folds and everywhere which was once hidden away. The lines on the unfolded origami are drawings in itself, the creased lines make a mark like lines and this ties into index with the lines that are left behind and my writing on the projector. After that i decided to put my poetry in it and played around with that and did a projection test in the video of where i blackening out the poem to show that i am no longer wanting to be vulnerable and not wanting to open up. I think with this development I didn’t really like it and I didn’t like the ones with my poem because i liked the simplistic one before. But over all I didn’t like it but at least i tried it.

Playing around with the paper plane design we created earlier, I've made my own folded shape to support the plane so it can be viewed at a different angle. This is something I may need to consider depending on the shapes, size and weight of my objects.
A poem I wrote relating to my observations recorded earlier of the canal and it's surroundings and my presence in the middle of it all. Possible use of this to be projected on to the work or read out.
I used to love origami as a kid so this will be really enjoyable finding a way to create shapes related to my brief along with some shapes to support it all.

He’d be like me & make himself some dinner at 12am. He would be wide awake and not sleepy at all. He wakes up at dawn consistently. He goes to sleep at a different time every single night. He likes to take naps but they are never planned because he doesn’t fall asleep easily. He loves to drink caffeinated drinks at terrible times. He will play a musical instrument + post a video of him playing said musical instrument to youtube + write an epic poem + do an improvised art project + learn how to say 17 new phrases in a foreign language + teach himself how to sign various obscure animals in sign language + take a walk around the neighborhood + feed and pet and befriend a stray cat + take pictures during his walk + learn origami + watch two episodes of a nature documentary series and then he will go to bed. This all happens in the span of four hours. It’s 5am before he goes to sleep. He wakes up at dawn with no problems whatsoever. He writes 1/3 of a novel the next night.
Ghostbur would have the most dreadful sleep schedule. I’m talking pure abysmal. It’s shocking.
