Nomadland
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Nomadland (2020, USA)
Director & Writer: Chloé Zhao
Mini-review:
This movie is spellbinding in every possible way. The cinematography is stunning (just look at that poster, which is a shot from the movie) and the acting is gorgeous. Frances McDormand gives a beautifully nuanced performance that makes the character seem completely real. There's not a single facial expression or line delivery that feels "acted". And the same goes for the rest of the cast. I was actually shocked when I read that most of them aren't even professional actors, because their acting was incredibly natural.
As for the story, nothing much happens, but it kept me absolutely enthralled. There's just something so special about Fern, her life on the road and her interactions with all the different characters she meets. It's hard to explain, but I found it all beautiful, haunting and kind of heartening. Chloé Zhao is a truly fascinating filmmaker, and I love how all her films are so... her. You can feel her touch in every single part of it. It's a bit too soon to say this, but I'm pretty sure Nomadland will be in the top spots of my ranking for movies I've watched this year.

Chloé Zhao @ 2021 Oscars

Only one destiny like there no excuses for them to have nominated one Black Woman in the director category. Last year I was shocked when Ruth carter was the first Black woman to have won two Oscar’s first time ever and the only one
Actually, there have been ZERO black women nominated for "Best Director" for the Oscars. There have only been 8 so far, and none of those women were black. I think Chloe Zhao was the first woc to be nominated "Best Director" for her film "Nomadland"....and even that was already 4 years ago.
.And yea, Ruth Carter's win was historic last year. Isn't that something?

Can we talk about how Chloe Zhao was dickmatized by him the same way Olivia was and that + the money he’d bring in was the only reason she wanted him for that role😭😭 At least she was a little classier about it than Big Liv but the TPWK shirts and the dickriding from an OSCAR WINNING director just for the cameo to be sooo bad was so funny 😭😭Cause she knows damn well that wasn’t a good performance AT ALL
in fairness, you gotta feel she had to do it to try and hype up the movie.
i don't believe she had any choice. the marvel people thought he'd bring in his little stans, and i think they also bought into his acting hype. and she was there to film the movie and i think she was basically forced to include him and wanted to of course act like she was enjoying it.

So, about a month ago, I read about Matthew Lawrence from Boy Meets World and several other things talking on the podcast he does with his brothers about being sexually harassed by a male director in a hotel room, and the director in question promised him a role in a Marvel movie if he took off his clothes and let the director take Polaroids.
Lawrence left the room and says his agency fired him for leaving.
In terms of how the industry treats sexual harassment victims, this is not surprising. Especially for male victims, who are expected to act like it doesn't exist for them at ALL.
Anyway, when I first read the quote, I found myself noodling on "Marvel movie" and "Oscar-winning director." Because Matthew didn't--and is not required--to name names, but also, it's such a small pool of options.
There are three Oscar winners in the MCU director pool: Chloe Zhao. Taika Watiti. Kenneth Branagh.
Chloe is off the list immediately because Matthew said it was a man.
But then Taika and Kenneth have never been accused of sexual harassment as far as a quick google search tells me.
The other thing is, Matthew Lawrence in the modern day isn't an actor that would get offered a Marvel contract by having a private meeting with a director. You have to have a certain profile, a certain amount of box office under your feet. He doesn't have that. Not a judgement on him, just a statement of fact. Chris Evans was regularly employed and liked by audiences when he got cast. Same as Mark Ruffalo. Same as Cobie Smulders and definitely the same for Samuel L. Jackson. Same for Paltrow. And even despite his many struggles, the same for RDJ. People showed up either for movies these people were in or--in Cobie's case--the tv show they were on.
Matthew Lawrence joining Boy Meets World was a BIG DEAL. He came on as Shawn's half-brother. Our favorite little meow meow now had a new nemesis/family member. This was top-tier shit.
It was 1997.
In August 1995, The Usual Suspects came out. It won 2 Oscars. It was directed by Bryan Singer. The first X-Men movie came out in 2000.
Bryan Singer didn't win an Oscar for Usual Suspects, but the movie he is heralded for directing DID win two Oscars. Bryan Singer didn't direct an MCU movie, but he directed a movie from Marvel comics.
And this is Matthew Lawrence in the timeframe that he was gaining attention for his role in Boy Meets World and the time Singer would have been casting for Cyclops:
Tumblr media
Bryan Singer has a long, awful history of being a sexual harasser at BEST and a sexual abuser at worst. While his reputation catching up with him around the time he failed to direct Bohemian Rhapsody seems to have finally derailed his career, he was literally untouchable for decades as he preyed on very young men.
To call him an open secret doesn't do it justice, okay.
I can't stress enough: NAMING BRYAN SINGER IS BASED ON ME KNOWING ENOUGH SHIT TO DRAW A LINE. MATTHEW LAWRENCE HAS NOT NAMED HIS HARASSER AND SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO DO SO. YOU WANNA HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS TAKE, IT'S MY TAKE. LEAVE MATTHEW OUT OF IT.

it does seem a lot of what he touches seems to fail or have problems/// I hope the people and media that eats his ass realises this & that he's not all that he thinks he is. I remember how much media was glazing his ass during DWD that they legit predicted he could win an Oscar. Also MP, and Olivia's family (yes she made a conscious decision to destroy her family, but if she chose the right man who stoop up for her, defended and claimed her publicly rather than treating her like a mistress I don't think she's be this humiliated) Besides did Harry even audition for his role in DWD? Cuz just like every media, she decided to kiss his ass and that resulted her being unemployed now. If there's a word to describe the opposite of Midas Touch, that'd be our one and only Harry Edward Styles. Everything he touches, crumbles.
The only role he auditioned for was Dunkirk. Nolan said he just wanted young, unknown, British guys for those roles. It was an ensemble cast, so, even though his acting sucked, he didn't stand out as much as it did in everything else.
He got DWD because Girl Boss wanted to sleep with him.
He got MP because he convinced the director that he was passionate about the role (and hey, he's already done a Nolan film and has been cast as the lead in another one, he can't be that bad, right?).
He got Eros because Chloe Zhao created the role for Harry Styles. The stage persona didn't translate onto the screen, though.
The roles that he actually read for, he didn't get: Elvis, you'll never convince me he was actually cast as Prince Eric (Disney just liked that free publicity), and the others that keep leaking.

A Weekly Reading Journal 2.25.24
The strange records of a book hoarding creature! Not a lot of change from the last update but I am adding a hauls section to the journal. This is likely to be a bad idea that reveals just how ridiculous I am but it also sounds fun! 😁
Currently Reading:
Fiction:
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin [RR]
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
Complete Shorter Fiction by Oscar Wilde
Poetry:
The Book of Songs translated by Arthur Waley
The Collected Poems of Sara Teasdale
Rilke: Poems by Rainer Maria Rilke
Marriage Poems edited by John Hollander
Nonfiction:
Eros The Bittersweet by Anne Carson
Graphic Novels:
Weirdos from Another Planet! by Bill Watterson
Just Finished:
Passing Strange by Ellen Klages ★★★
DNFs:
The Governess Gambit by Erica Ridley [K] (gave up at about 50% I just don't like Chloe as a narrator. Which probably means I won't like the next book in the series either. Bother. 😐)
Hauled:
Spy x Family Vol.8 by Tatsuya Endo (Barnes & Noble)
A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal (Barnes & Noble)
The Revenge of the Baby-Sat by Bill Watterson (Little Free Library)
Something Under the bed is Drooling by Bill Watterson (Little Free Library)
Yukon Ho! by Bill Watterson (Little Free Library)
General Reading Thoughts:
It's been a bit of a lazy week with not nearly as much reading happening as I would have liked. I've been way too distracted by youtube honestly. Whoops.
Happy Reading!!!

when will hollywood stop plucking women who win oscars for their early movies (greta getwig, chloe zhao, etc — also men to be clear, but it grinds my gears when it’s women because there are far fewer women directors so it’s more obvious) to direct brainless reboots and remakes of utter bullshit

Oh. Does that explain the Chloe Zhao link? That they met socially through Taylor, who in turn met through the connection both just formed with Searchlight Pictures? Disappointing if so.
I mean, I suppose it could be. But Joe already has the Searchlight connection (via Yorgos) so he may very well have met Chloe that way. And then introduced them (the Searchlight producers) to Taylor. We know he took her to his agency's Oscar party so it stands to reason he brings her to those kinds of events.

It’s true! One example is Oscar Winner Chloe Zhao. She writes not just films that have one Academy Awards, as well as Eternals, but she also writes fanfiction as a hobby under an alias. Nice try, hater. Trying to make it sound like writing fanfiction is a bad thing. 🙄
