E1 Scene 5 - Street Fight

I think we are to assume this scene takes place the following night. This is a straightforward scene, and we never come back to this world in the rest of S1. We're still establishing basic character here.

One thing that I do think is interesting in light of the "corruption arc" theory of the show is that between this scene and the one before it, it's clear that Porsche's life has never been free from the influence of organized crime. Even before he finds out about his family, it is the source of power in his world. The narrative gives us no alternative; it's just a matter of which side of the power structure he occupies.

The world of comic book creators is a diverse and vibrant community, with artists and writers from all over the world contributing to this art form. Unfortunately, some creators face significant challenges due to censorship in their home countries. One such group is Russian comic creators, who are increasingly finding themselves blacklisted by the international community due to the actions of their government.

Despite these challenges, there are still Russian creators who are producing exceptional work, such as Leena Kilevaya, the creator of My Student Spirit. The series is currently being produced by Phoenix Animation, an Eastern European animation studio creating cartoons, comic books, and short animated features for teenage and adult audiences. While the works produced by the studio are Russian, they are trying to expand into an international market, but with everything going on in the world, particularly with Russia, that is difficult.

As a reader and fan of the series, I will admit that I hesitated to recommend Russian animation because I do not support Russia’s government or their actions. However, I believe that many people and creators under their regime disagree, and they deserve to have their work recognized. I decided to purchase a copy of their English-translated volumes to support this creator and her work, which I think deserves recognition.

Just as I support enjoying art and separating it from its creator, I think we can separate creator from their government, or–at least–appreciate the art for what it is. As such, I highly recommend checking out My Student Spirit and supporting Leena Kilevaya and other Russian comic creators who are producing exceptional work despite facing challenges from their government’s censorship and ongoings.

I discovered the series by exploring YouTube for independent animation projects to enjoy and felt it was one of the strongest pieces on their platform. The writing is well-crafted, the characters are funny and personable, and the college setting adds the slice-of-life feel to the intriguing mystery of the story.

"The Phoenix" - What was your f/o’s first impression of you versus their current thoughts about you now?

Im going w Carmen for this answer bc I feel like a lot of my f/os first impressions are like “who is this guy??” Or. Yknow. “Scary.”

Carmen is interesting bc the way I’ve written myself in is that I’m a pastry chef with a history of working at a Michelin star restaurant as a patissier who quit said Michelin star restaurant and moved to Chicago to basically start over again.

THAT BEING SAID. My s/i is friends w Marcus beforehand and gets the details about everything. He decides to write a good luck message on the little wax paper bag the croissant comes in and thus Carmen’s first impression is “competent pastissier” and then he IMMEDIATELY TAKES THE MESSAGE THE WRONG WAY and thinks that I’m being condescending.

Then they Develop. Carmen confronts my s/i about the message and I’m like ??? I was trying to be kind ??? And I just. Jump into the deep end on slowly prying my way into Carmen’s shell by way of talking and giving him (and the rest of the crew) pastries.

Now I imagine that Carmen’s thoughts on me are more along the lines of ‘very caring’ but also ‘needs caring for’ as well. Alongside the title of prettiest man he’s ever known, actually

“Alone Together" - How does your f/o say “I love you” non-verbally?

Since we’re on the Carmen train, I’ll continue.

Carmen has a hang up with those three words, as recorded in s2 e6. He struggles with saying it and showing that he cares. He has to actively make an effort to show his love (I E him second guessing himself and letting Richie talk to him in s2 e1) because of this, I think the way he says I Love You is fitting me into his schedule, being available to talk to and opening up and being vulnerable. His version of I love you is giving me time!!

overall i just really enjoy this quirk of xianzhou luofu locals, it makes all the npc dialogue really interesting! i love worldbuilding like this

Easily the least number of books I've read in a single year since I could read. Mostly because it's hard and tiring for me to read with bad eyes and spending long days reading with my job. Interesting that I'm being drawn more to non-fiction than fiction these days.

Wow I watch a lot of tv and film. I really enjoyed Fresh off the Boat and multiple seasons of Below Deck this year. The right balance of entertaining and easy to wind down to and knit to after work.

I feel like I don't gig anywhere near as much as I used to, and that makes me sad. But I do like that I'm still doing on average a cultural thing every two weeks. Less gigs, more other types of culture and I'm definitely throwing lots of support behind the local culture scene.

Mooie afsluiter van het seizoen. Gisteren was de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen. Phoenix E1 maakte het nog even spannend.

Avanti E4 – Phoenix E1 Wie dacht dat de E1 na de domper van vorige week het allemaal niks meer kon schelen kwam bedrogen uit. Gisteren was alweer de laatste wedstrijd van de mini-competitie. Om als winnaar uit de bus te komen moesten er 2 dingen gebeuren: Ten eerste moesten we winnen van Avanti. Iets wat niet vanzelfsprekend is omdat Avanti de eerste ronde gelijk gespeeld had tegen…

Mr Facey has been awesome again! I never thought anyone would capture these moments, but I am exceeding glad he did!

1- Phoenix Knights! This is the only picture of all of us together!

2- Sola is generally an emotive, light hearted soul. I never thought I'd see her so serious. Also, I am *in love* with the new Phoenix staff.

3- After every battle Dawn pays tribute to the fallen. Needless to say, my girl does not take loss well. Credit to the speakers at the rememberance. I was trying desperately not to shed tears.

My head-canon on Ozai's role politically and militarily in the Fire Nation Navy!

Ozai probably was involved military in the war just like Iroh did. Ozai probably served in the Navy just like Iroh served in the Army. Also considering the Fire Nation takes inspiration from Imperial Japan. Both the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy had a massive, brutal, and ruthless rivalry. Ozai and Iroh's rivalry would be the personification of that. Plus, Zhao was made an Admiral by Ozai along with the Southern Raiders having (sea-raven) similar-like bird connections just like Ozai with Phoenixes. Perhaps, Ozai helped founded the Southern Raiders or joined the Fire Nation Navy special forces unit once he became old enough to join. He also hunted down the Avatar just like his grandfather, father, and later son [Boy in the Iceberg: B1 E1]. Having a group like the Southern Raiders who are well-known for raiding the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes would be useful for Ozai's mission of hunting down the illusive Avatar. He probably hired younger versions of the Rough Rhinos, Combustion-Man (in this case Combustion-Boy...), and skilled Yu-Yan Archers.

People like using Ozai not being officially known as a military leader as a putdown for downplaying him as a fighter and warrior. Yet, Ozai is confirmed to be an Agni Kai reigning champion and known as the strongest Fire Bender of his era according to the writers Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and Yet Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko, and even Azula are NOT a part of the military and are impressive. There is also no doubt in my mind that someone as smart, powerful, cruel, and vicious as Ozai raided the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe and burned the towns and villages to the ground like the Rough Rhinos and Pre Redemption Iroh while searching for the Avatar.

Ozai also likely played an administrative role during his father Azulon's administration once he became older enough. Iroh is out and about looking for dragons to slay and far away on the frontline of the war effort. Once, Azulon became elderly there is no doubt, Azulon had his son become personal secretary and diplomat. Azulon might even have some type of cognitive disease like dementia (cough Biden cough)...given he wanted his grandson Zuko murdered with no potential benefit or logic.
