"MACHINE IS CLEAN, SO SWEET AND MEAN
"
NOTE: I'm watching "The Bikeriders" later today, so, I thought I'd post these on "Motörhead Monday." These are for you, Lem'. Ride on, you legend, ride on.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a photo-shoot of MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister in France, c. 1979. Lemmy reportedly never owned a motorbike, but borrowed THE STRANGLERS' Jean-Jacques Burnel's Triumph 75 Bonneville for these shots. 📾: Bruno Bloom.
^Even Lemmy knew how dangerous motorcycles were (in a world filled to death with cars, that is), which is probably why he never owned one, and thank fuck because we needed him alive decades later to keep the flame of Motörmusic alive and speeding.

""FILTH HOUNDS OF HADES" EXPLODED FROM BRITISH HELL WITH ALL THE FANGS AND FURY..."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a T-shirt design for "Filth Hounds of Hades," the 1982 debut album by British heavy metal/proto-thrash power trio, TANK. Kamaflage Records.
BAND/ALBUM OVERVIEW: "March 1982. Maggie Thatcher lords over a dangerously unemployed U.K. with a hatchet face, a controversial economic policy and “a voice like a cat sliding down a blackboard.” The Falklands War debacle is just weeks away. Meanwhile, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal is about to hit its commercial peak with IRON MAIDEN’s "The Number of the Beast." MOTÖRHEAD’s "Iron Fist" is cocked, locked and ready to drop the proverbial hammer on Blighty’s dole-diving speed freaks, spot-faced rivet heads and leather-loving piss punks. Just over the horizon, VENOM’s game-changing "Black Metal" and JUDAS PRIEST’s mega-selling "Screaming for Vengeance" are poised to strike pain and pleasure into the hearts of the denim-clad faithful.
A few months prior, three lager-swilling London lads calling themselves TANK were holed up in the Who’s Ramport Studios recording their full-length debut with vast quantities of booze and speed and no less than MOTÖRHEAD’s ïżœïżœïżœFast” Eddie Clarke in the producer’s seat. The band was the three-headed fantasy headache of bassist/vocalist Alasdair “Algy” Ward, who had previously lent his unique talents to punk legends THE SAINTS and THE DAMNED, resulting in arguably the best albums from both bands (1978’s "Eternally Yours" and 1979’s "Machine Gun Etiquette," respectively).
After getting the sack from the Damned, Ward recorded a handful of demos before recruiting brothers Peter (guitar) and Mark Brabbs (drums) to form a power trio in the loud, louche and inebriated style of their future benefactors MOTÖRHEAD — a comparison they could never quite shake. Released in March of ’82, "Filth Hounds of Hades" exploded from British hell with all the fangs and fury of the three-headed Cerberus on the album’s iconic sleeve. Featuring unstoppable beer bangers like “Turn Your Head Around,” “Shellshock” (later covered by German thrash maniacs Sodom) and “(He Fell in Love With a) Stormtrooper,” the record would go on to influence METALLICA and carve TANK’s legend into the annals of heavy metal history."

i asked my homie to help me suss out the influences in SKELETA
when i first listened to SKELETA I heard a lot of Def Leppard, a little bit of Rush (I see you Marks of the Evil One) and a lot of Iron Maiden again and I thought I was going crazy and only knew 3 bands in the world.
so I asked my homie who plays the kind of doofus ass metal Tobias Forge listens to (affectionate) to help me corroborate and this is what he sent back (under the cut).**
**Doofus Metal missed the Rush but I asked Drummer Bestie, who loves Rush to an almost unhealthy degree and *he* said "I DEFINITELY think ol’ Toby was listening to 2112/Farewell To Kings-era Rush with Marks of the Evil One, you absoLUTELY called that one!!"
Peacefield
Opening very imogen heap (very cool)
First verse very 80 glam
prechorus is very journey (triumph)
Chorus similar
post-chorus very iron maiden harmonic themes
2nd verse has the driving frontman heavy Judas priest style
prechorus still very triumph, the tagline pushing major is very uplifting
Chorus similar to prechorus
bridge is very eurometal, "odd" (read as: not boring and generic) vocal lines
outro is almost very Def Leppard-ish
Lachryma
Opening is very 90s sludge thrash
Prechorus is very priest
chorus very gothic def leppard
this riff is insane, almost proto-megadeth circa Peace Sells
"and I cannot hide" is such an interesting cadence, it communicates a cool vibe before the chorus
post-chorus is very iron maiden, especially him bringing the harmonies up (iron maiden doesn't usually cadence on emotive lines so it's a bit more refreshing lol)
Satanized
Verse is extremely 80s power metal but with interesting vocal lines (no shade to 80s power metal)
Chorus is very Blind Guardian/Gamma ray (depending on how old you are)
IS THIS LATIN IN MY POWER METAL
2nd Verse feels so uplifting and hits that 80s power metal vibe so good
these "Save Me"s hit real good
This solo is a Glenn Tipton solo if he could play guitar
The thematics feel very Judas Priest, but they're more accessible (said with love, The Ripper sometimes turns people away)
Guiding Lights
This is so incredibly Manowar power metal but nobody has said "Abs" or "sword" yet so we're in uncharted territory
Super ballady solo rips, I am a huge simp for ballads, especially when they're doing the "I'm a soldier on the path to my death" lament style
De Profundis Borealis
Intro is very proggy, the guitar players really have a good ear for weird cool riffs
Verse seems like peak Ghost, I'd basically call this their "style" they should be remembered for, like the slightly uncomfortable enigmatic dissident vocalist over very "pump your fist" riffing, so it makes you very motivated but you're being motivated under the guise of a concerning dark leader (?)
Pretty banger chorus, hard to tease out an influence
Post-chorus feels like it could be iron maiden but they're a bit more interesting than the normal 16th note grind of your typical maiden, almost seems closer to Super NES boss battle music than maiden
Cenotaph
This guitar tone is such an enigma to me with how well it works but if I just focus on it my brain explodes.
This gothic billy joel verse is killing it
This verse is very early priest, very NWOBHM especially if they open up the chorus to be very Definitely Hetero(tm)
in the heat of the MOEMEANT
This solo section is pure European power metal, Sonata Arctica big vibes (or maybe bodom? I feel like they never have the emotive qualities this does)
big chorus feels great, and the vocal riffing after feels great
Missillia Armori
Intro is very Rock of Ages def leppard but using interesting notes and diction
Chorus feels big time Iron maiden but without the incel edge on their early albums
This bridge fucks
The solos on this album rip wtf(1)
Marks Of the Evil One
This one I'm having a hard time placing. It feels like peak Ghost, between both the verses and
the chorus, this is exactly what I'd say future bands will pull influence when I say "these guys
wrote a Ghost song"
Chorus rips
awesome drop into the solo, also see: (1)the solos on this album fucking rip wtf
DID HE JUST SAY "FUCKIN"
Umbra (what a fucking cool name would be a shame if some nobody band wanted to use this name for a song ;_;)
Intro is neo-horror Journey/Triumph (Triumph is better)
Okay hold on what's going on
I have no words for influences on this one, it's so sick
chorus fucking rips. These dudes are so good at writing big choruses it's becoming uncanny
trying to disentangle what's going on in these verses, it's got such a great upbeat 80s power metal beat plus a chuggy 90s midtempo thrash guitar but the cowbell keeps scrambling my brain and his verse is just so mismatched that it creates a tangible feeling of discomfort in me but that meshes with the song perfectly
oh shit we playing 16th notes, and this 70s acid rock middle section is wild cause those 70s players could never touch these solos lol (no disrespect Iron Butterfly)
I am feeling very uncomfortable but that is the intention
Aw fuck yeah, this is the release I needed. if he drops out the instruments under IN THE TEMPLE OF THE- I'm gonna blam
I KNEW I was gonna blam
on first listen, this one is my favorite by a huge margin
Excelsis
This is very Judas Preist meets The Beatles, but honestly Tobias has such a unique voice that he kinda slays it outside of those two
OH MAN IT'S ANOTHER POWER METAL BALLAD HELLLLLLLL YEAH
This terrifying sing-song verse cap is giving me tummy feelings
Great 2nd verse, the dancing organ in the background adds a WILD tambre that undermines the JP/Beatles vibe
chorus rips, adding that verse cap ("you will too") does such a good job at making it uncomfortable
really good last song on the album, feels great to be left on this when the CD ends
CONCLUSION:
This was my basic knee-jerk referential ideas on “This sounds similar to X’s style” but I really can’t underline enough that most of the time I’m comparing them to Triumph or Def Leppard, it’s REALLY hard to disambiguate because they’re so unique compared to both those bands AND it’s hard to say that Triumph and Def Leppard can take claim to “Arena Rock” sound- meaning like the Rock of Ages vibe that the main drive is “This is played in a big arena full of people” because (afaik, no qualifications) Ghost’s whole thing is the idea of the “Megachurch Vibe” being like the penultimate arena rock sound, they differentiate themselves from those “roots” (if they would even agree that’s their influence) because there is simply a psychology to the “Arena Rock” feel that a ton of big bands have figured out, and it’s kinda core to Ghost’s identity (imo) while I think their writing identity is definitely more of Mark of the Evil One, because I would say that checks all the boxes for Ghost’s style, so much so that I had a hard time even figuring out how to categorize their influences on that, “it just sounds like Ghost”

I’ve been seeing a few folks complain about people writing hcs of DC characters with ooc song preferences, which it’s not that serious. But it gives me an excuse to show off my DC character playlists.
I initially created them as I saw a lot of playlists for Bruce & Jason with just a lot of dad rock.
Which, fair. Not everyone’s into metal.
But since I know it’s not an easy genre to get into, if you want inspiration, feel free to check out these playlists!
My one main rule for making playlists is that a majority, if not all, of the songs need to be in a genre I think the character would listen to based on their canon music taste. This is regardless whether or not it’s a genre I like. I try my best to find fun songs regardless of my personal preference.
The Playlists:
Batman: various genres of metal. I tried to go for more Doom Metal(slow & repetitive vs thrash’s blast beats and fast guitar) but there’s more than one genre of metal that’s characterized by slower instrumentals & I can’t keep up with all the names so it varies. Dad metal. Made sure that there was a sprinkle of Black Metal too (mainly bc I think it’s funny. If you’ve never listened to black metal, it sounds like you chucked the vocalist in a grinder at high speeds then proceeded to mix your instruments & your vocals the worst you could possibly make it. It’s nearly incomprehensible and it’s Perfect for Bruce.)
Bruce Wayne: a touch of old school doom metal, a sprinkle of black metal as you can write a Batman story without Bruce Wayne but not a Bruce Wayne story without Batman. A more chill version of the Batman playlist that I think Bruce would jam out to as not everyone’s into metal and I wanted to give people another option that didn’t have as heavy stuff in it.
Tim Drake: Mostly time accurate with 90s-2010’s punk rock & alt rock influences all the way through with a touch of metal to show his connection to Bruce & a few other off genre songs that represent his YJ98 pals. I tried my best to include as many bands as I could find that he canonically enjoyed as well.
Jason Todd: Jason was introduced in the 80s & is a canonical metalhead, so I think he’d listen to a combination of 80s dad metal, death metal (come on, it’s just too perfect of a genre name to pass up), thrash, & a little black metal (the genre I assigned to Batman).
Clark Kent: Dad metal. He canonically listens to Metallica post-crisis so I just gave him my dad’s taste in music lmao. Made sure to add a few satire ones because Clark is an little shit and would very much enjoy satire songs. Unfortunately, I genuinely could not get my Spotify recs to give me decent country music. I tried. It only gave me modern mainstream artists and after a month of trying to find good pre 2000’s country, I just gave up. So it’s mainly metal:(
If any of y’all want to send me 80s-2000’s country recs, that would be very kind of y’all. (the type of country music ma & pa kent would listen to that Clark would have grown up with)
Kon-El: is full of songs that are, well, time accurate to his original run. Ranging from 1969-2002 [the year his solo run was canceled], this playlist not only has songs he could have theoretically picked up in a record shop or blasted on a boom box during the day but is also full of bands he canonically listens to! This playlist is chalk full of Kon’s canonical alt rock & metal music taste as well as rock and proto-metal hits of the time!
Bart Allen: to be clear, Bart wouldn’t listen to any of these as music is just too slow for him. These are songs that relate to Bart or songs that represent his connections to his friends with no specific genre as I didn’t just want to have playlists full of nothing but metal. (Although I think he’d really like metal concerts as he’d probably enjoy the feeling of the heavy base resonate in his chest.)

đŸ§” threads đŸȘĄ
thread comes from the Proto-Indo-European word tere- meaning ‘to rub, turn’ (because you turn the thread back and forth when weaving).
tere- also developed into:
contour
detour
detriment
drill (/t/ changed to /d/)
return
thrash
thresh
throw
trauma (originally ‘a wound, defeat’)
trite (the change in meaning went: rub > worn out > overused)
And of course: turn

Thursday, March 6: Sodom, "Persecution Mania" [ENCORE]
R.I.P. Christian "Witchhunter" Dudek (1965-2008)
The Today’s Metal Tune tumblr posted its first song March 5, 2014.  To celebrate 11 years of METAL we are revisiting some of the most noted tracks from over the years- these are the songs that garnered more likes, reblogs and/or comments, and while some of the artists might be expected, the songs maybe not so much, which is what makes this week’s set such an interesting list.  A huge THANK YOU to everyone that has followed, liked, reblogged and commented over the past 11 years, there’s much more still to come

“Persecution Mania” was among the tunes that helped Sodom stand alongside Kreator and Destruction as the Big 3 of German thrash, separating the band from its American counterparts by paying less attention to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and emphasizing the Venom and Hellhammer influences. Indeed, Persecution Mania’s title track was pure chaos from beginning to end, with Tom Angelripper’s proto-death metal vocals sounding even more unhinged than Mille Petrozza, while the wonderfully named Witchhunter didn’t so much play his drums as attack them.  Frank Blackfire (aka future Kreator guitarist Frank Gosdzik) wasn’t a shredder on par with other thrash legends, but he was a fine enough successor to preceding guitarists Grave Violator and Destructor (if nothing else, Sodom’s members had excellent stage names).  This was an angrier and more shambolic strain of thrash, even more so than early Slayer, and ultimately not only set the band apart from its peers but also set the stage for even more extreme forms of metal.

I feel like Batman: The Animated Series never gets proper derision for ruining the character of Killer Croc for basically all time. Reading the character's introductory story arc was such an enlightening experience because he is functionally built up as proto-Bane being able to command control of all the mobs in Gotham and thrash Batman to such a degree that it culminates in every other active villain teaming up to wrest control of the city's underworld back from him. And then starting in 1992 he is reduced to a big monstery guy that has no character other than isn't it cool that Batman can fight the big monstery guy and win.
