Ralphxhuman!Reader pt 2

Some time has passed since you've lived with your new friend. He is mostly talkative but he also can get overwhelmed easily. People has treated him bad , that much you can tell. You always tell him how beautiful he is , inside and out , which he returns by saying that you are one of the few humans that has treated him with kindness, respect even , like an equal. You try not to get too much into his past since he doesn't like to talk about it , instead you make him calm now, in the present.

His gratitude is displayed mostly into words but sometimes he would bring you some flowers he grew thanks to your help.

Since you had little money from your savings and he didn't had much to begin with , you took some jobs here and there and everything felt good , everything felt normal even. He would always wait for you to tell you stories about each and every flower.

And today you haven't seen him , which was odd. Instead, some police cars patrolled the area and as soon as you saw the fence wide open and policem coming from inside , panic has risen from deep inside your heart.

Taking much faster steps you walked around , trying not to look suspicious. Making sure your backpack was well placed on your back , you made a run for it. And , all of a sudden, you've catched a glimpse of his cape. His hands were cuffed infront of him , LED spinning a rapid red. You walked behind him , quiet, so the single policeman won't think anything of you.

They crossed the street and were headed somewhere near the park.

If they think they take Ralph so easy they'll have to think again.

A second of inattention was all you needed. As you walked behind a policeman , you gently took one of his gun. Pickpocketing wasn't new to you , unfortunately. But now it seemed like a skill you're grateful to have achieved. Letting a little distance between you and the police, you've raised the gun and aim at his head. He was alone for now , the best moment to strike.

"Let go of the Android!" Taking him surprise as you shouted , gun trembling between your inexperienced fingers. "Let go of him!Now!" He looked shocked for a second as he watched you. Careful, he tried to approach you. "Don't fucking move or I won't hesitate!".

Catching the attention of the other policemen , they approached as well , slowly, as to not startle you. Between them was also an android. His piercing gaze could easily make you cry but you hold your ground and looked him in the face.

"Easy , we don't want to hurt you." He said as he stared to make small steps towards you.

Aiming at his feet and pulling the trigger, the sound hurting your ears.

"Let go of Ralph!"

Ralph was watching everything without saying anything. He was scared , terrified , that you may get yourself hurt. "I want you to tell that man to free Ralph. Now!"

"Calm down for a bit , you're scared and you may take irrational actions. My name is Connor. What's yours?"

"My name doesn't matter here! I want you to free Ralph. Now."

Seeing as no one was doing anything, you turned your eyes to Ralph for a second. With your gun still in Connors face , you begun talking again, much calmer now.

"Listen here , all I want is for Ralph to be free. OK? Ralph, come here." Connor made a sign to the policeman , to say that everything was ok. And Ralph took scared steps behind you , he came so close to your back that you could feel his breath on the back of your neck. "Ralph is ok. They were going to take Ralph to ask him some questions. Ralph thinks you should stop this because Ralph doesn't want them to hurt you."

Turning now to face him, you felt yourself break down. "No Ralph , they will take you back to CyberLife and kill you. I don't want you to die Ralph!" Crying now , you took his cuffed hands into yours. "I don't want to lose you Ralph. Please. Not you , everyone else but you."

" Ralph wants you to live a happy life."

"How am I supposed to do that if you're dead?" Crying even harder , your legs gave out and you fell on your knees. Everyone was watching you , they were listening to your broken sobs and pleas.

"I can't let them take you Ralph , I can't."

"What if you come with Ralph to the interrogation? I don't mind." finally said Connor now being in front of you , his tall form towering over you.

The room was dimly lit , mostly white. The huge glass in the middle of the wall wasn't helpful either. When Connor said you can come , you hoped to be next to Ralph , not the one answering the questions.

"What's your relationship with Android WR600?"

Coming back from your train of thoughts , you watched Connor as he leaned forward, his hands on the table. Yours were cuffed to the table. Looking at your hands and staying quiet was the best option, there is no way you'll talk to him. Not after all of this.

" it will be easier if you talked to me. I want to help you."

And again, he was greeted with silence.

" What's your relationship with WR600?"

"Ralph." You answered quietly, barely whispering .

"Excuse me? I didn't catch that."

Slamming your hands against the table you looked him in the eyes and shouted "Ralph! His name is Ralph".

He analysed everything about you , he knew your name even before you could tell him , he asked about your parents even before you told their names. He also analysed your pulse every time he asked a question, making sure not to anger you too much.

" OK, so what's your relationship with Ralph then? What's a human like you doing with a defective android?"

"Hes not defect ok!? His last owners treated him bad so he ran away just like...just like.."

"Just like you?"

"Yes , just like me."

"The gun you had , it was one of our policeman. I assume you stole it right?"

"Yup."

"I have seen more futage from around the neighbourhood that you also stole from local stores. Nothing too much , just food apparently. Why?"

The memories of your parents flooded your mind and making you anable to speak.

"Maybe I should call them to take you from here."

If they take you back home it's game over. Who knows what they'll do this time. They'll most likely finally kill you so they don't have to complain about how much they've spent with you, or how expensive it is to cook for three, or that everything you do is wrong , that maybe they should just sell you for a good amount of money so you'll finally be valuable for them.

Just the simple thought of them made goosebumps arise.

"No , no you can't call them , please." Rising your face and looking him in the eyes , panic overtaking control of your body. The chair fell backwards as you suddenly rose up. "No! You can't do that! You can't call them! No!" Breathing was getting harder and harder as your vision was getting more blurred, repeating pleas and begging the android not to call those monsters.

"Calm down , your pulse has risen more than it should, and your stress level is around 78%".

His words didn't reach your ears as you continued talk above him , still begging. The door suddenly opened and revealed a long white haired man.

"I'll take from here Connor. Uncuff the child."

Doing as he was told , Connor took the cuffs of your hands and left the room.

"Hi there kid. My name is Hank , Hank Anderson. I'm really sorry about what happened. Are you OK?"

Small hiccups could be heard as your body trembled. "Y-yeah , I think so."

"That's better kid. Now , can you tell me why you ran away?"

"Is Ralph OK?"

"Of course he is , he is waiting for you in one of our cells."

"Good" you smiled a little "I'm glad he's alright."

"What happened between you and your parents?"

"They , they were gonna beat me again. I-I just wanted to be free. I wanted all of that to stop , you know. So I grabbed my coat and run off through the window."

"That's tough kid , you are really brave. And how did you meat umm, Ralph?"

"I wanted to get shelter for the night so I tried to enter one of those abandoned houses and he found me and took me in. He's been nothing but kind to me! I swear!"

Detective could see you're getting agitated again so he tried to calm you down by asking more questions of you.

" So you stayed with him , huh? Did he cook for you?"

You giggled a little, remembering the time you tried to cook something with Ralph and he almost setting the house on fire. "Nah , he's a gardener , he grows the vegetables and I cook. He doesn't need to eat. I know I stole but I had to . I will- I will pay everything, I swear!"

"Nah kid , don't worry. Life on the street is tough as it is. You're a brave one , I have to admit. We won't call your parents, ok? You can rest assured now. Since we've finished here , I'll take you to Ralph OK?"

"Yes , I would love that. Thank you."

I woke up way too early, again. I looked outside the window. The sun hadn't even risen yet. With a grunt, I let myself fall back onto the bed. A sigh left my lips, as I tried to fall back asleep...unsuccessfully.

"Damn it", I mumbled to myself and got up to get dressed. Work didn't start yet, but it was never to early for coffee.

I walked around my room, gathering my clothes. As I was getting ready, my gaze fell onto my badge. My weapon was lying right next to it. It made me think back to the last time, I used it. It was a few weeks ago, when the android protests increased. I was glad that they managed to win back their independence. It made my job much easier, since the whole division for Deviancy became useless, which meant that my Partner Hank and me got some weeks of only light work in front of us. Much to Hank's likings, I might add. That man really needed a break, after all he went through. But to be honest, not only him.

I stopped staring at my badge and finally picked  it up, shoving it in my pocket. I grabbed my weapon and put it under my belt, hidden behind my coat. It was still chilly outside, so it was easy not to be so noticeable.

I grabbed my purse and finallly left my apartment, now on my way to the nearest coffe shop. I found it, a cupple weeks ago, when I tried to show Connor some perks of being a human.

I cursed under my breath. I thought, thaat maybe, just maybe I could be able to go for one day without thinking about him, but it seemed impossible.

I knew I shouldn't think about him again, but still, I let my mind wander to him again, as I got in line for my coffee.

Everything was going smooth, until it wasn't. Hank, Connor and I visited the Eden club today. And just like I said, it started good, but then things got out of hand. And while I ended up with a black eye from fighting the Android's, Conner was left confused, while Hank was angry. I felt like, after starting to trust Connor, this trust now started to slowly crumble again. 

So, as we visited the bridge, Hank and I used to come to, when I was still a rookie, things got even worst.

"Hank, knock it off!!", I yelled. He was pointing his gun at Connor. And oh boy, the Android didn't make it any better, provoking Hank further and further. 

"Whatever", Hank finally said and walked away. I watched as he walked back to his car and drove away.

"What was that all about!?"; I asked and turned back to Connor. The android looked at me, confused as hell.

"I am still trying to figure him out", he whispered and turned around, looking at the water.

I sighed and walked over to him, leaning against the railing.

"You need to stop provoking him, he has been through a lot. You have no idea, what a few words can do to a man!", I explained to Connor.

"Don't I?", he asked.

I chuckled and patted his shoulder:"You simply lack the experience"

"Experience?", he asked,"I am the most advanced android Cyberlife has to offer at the moment, I was built for this Job"

"I am not talking about the job, Connor.", I smiled sadly,"I mean life"

"Do you imply, that I don't know what he is going through, because I am no human?", Connor whispered, he was staring directly into my eyes. He almost seemed shocked.

"No Connor", I smiled,"For me, there is no difference between Android and human. What I mean is, that even though you are extremely skilled at your job, you don't have any life experience. You've only been activated a few months ago, your're still a child, trying to find it's place in the world."

"I have a place"; he stated blantly,"The DPD, and cyberlife"

"That's not, what I meant", I said and grabbed his hand,"I am sure you will understand soon. I will help you find your place"

I watched as Connor's LED started flickering yellow, while he inspected our interwined hands. 

"Do you really see no diference between Human and android?", Connor asked, his eyes suddenly avoiding me.

"No", I mumbled,"I don't care aout the colour of your blood, you're just as human, as I am and you deserve to be treated respectfully and not like you're objects"

I must've been mistaken, but I thought I saw his LED flash red, before he pulled my closer by my hand and softly kissed my head. I was too stunned to speak, as he leaned back.

"Thank you, Y/N, Your help means a lot to me. I hope that we can continue like this.", Connor stated.

"Of course, Connor. ", I smiled,"I am glad, we are friends"

"Friends", he repeated.

"Ma'm, your coffee is ready"

I snapped back out of my thoughts and looked at the man in front of me. I smiled at him and handed him the money before grabbing my coffee and leaving.

I slowly sipped my coffee, as I wandered around the streets. Signs of the protest's were still very visible. But we would built it up again, I was sure of it.

I made my way to the mall, looking if I could buy anything. But that dind't help. My mind was still with Connor and what happened next, after we got closer. My heart ached at the memory. After all that happened, I didn't even remember why I was so willing to get into a relationship with him. I should've known that he was only using me, that he was faking it all, to help our investgation. I still didn't know why he had to do this to me exactly, but after he became a deviant, we only saw eah other again one time and that was when we helped Hank get away from the fake Connor. 

That was the last time, I saw him. And even though, I still can't forgive him for what he did, I still hoped that he was alright, that he was alive and fine. 

"Well well, what do we have here?"

I instantly recognzed his voice and turned around:"Gavin, my lovely friend and colleague"

He smiled and I walked over to him, giving the man a welcome hug.

"Wanna go to work together?", he asked.

I smiled:"Sure thing"

We started to make our way to the police departement, indulging in a light conversation while we were walking. As we finally reached our destination, I said my goodbyes to Gavin and made my way over to my desk. Hank wasn't here yet, as usual. I sat down and got ready for paperwork, as I heard an all too familiar voice.

I peaked over my PC and I couldn't believe my eyes. Right there, talking to the comissioner, was none other that Connor himself.

"You've gotta be kidding me", I mumbled to myself and slumbed back down in my chair, hiding behind my monitor. He was right there, walking around, like nothing ever happened. Like he never betrayed me.

"It wil be nice to have you back, Connor. We can really use all the help we can get.", I heard the Commissioner say.

"Every help, my ass.", I mumbled to myself, as I got up. I wasn't planning on talking to Connor today or even encountering him again, so I made my way over to Gavin.

"Already missing me?", He grinned, as he saw me walking over to his desk. 

I smiled at him:"Always. Do you mind getting a coffee with me?Outside?"

Gavin looked at me, a confused expresssion on his face, but then his eyes wandered around my head and he nodded.

"Don't worry, I'll keep the tin can away from you.", he smiled and held out his arm for me.

I gently interwined my arm with his and smiled:"Thank you."

Together, we made our way out of the Police Station. Unbeknownst to the both of us,Connor had been watching us the entire time, analysing every single action of both, Gavin and me. He excused himself from his talk with the Commissioner and silently followed the two of us.

"What exactly happened between you two, if I may ask?", Gavin mumbled, as he sipped his coffee. 

"It's a long story", I answered, looking down, too ashamed of what happened between Connor and me,"But what you must know is, that I thought his feelings were real, but apparantly he was just faking it alll to help our stupid investigation."

"Oh",Gavin mouthed,"That plastic prick"

"Yeah", I sniffled,"I guess, it doesn't matter what the colour of your blood is, you can be an asshole anyways"

"I am truly sorry for what happended to you, Y/N", Gavin stated and stopped walking. He put both his hands on top of my shoulders,"And honestly, if he was only using you, he didn't deserve you anyway, you deserve better!"

I chuckled at his words:"That's what I keep telling myself, but I guess it's just all lies to make up for the fact, that I still have feelings for him"

"You do!?"

Gavin and I turned around in surprise, as I heard the voice of the man I least wanted to see right now.

"Have you been following us?!", Gavin barked,"For how long, you freak!?"

He was about to charge at Connor, but I stopped him:"Don't!"

Gavin hesitated for a second, but finally stepped back.

"Can we talk?", Connor asked.

"You plastic prick...", Gavin mumbled again. He was ready to beat the shit out of Connor, but I stopped him again. 

"You will talk", I whispered and looked at Connor,"I will listen and then we'll see if I have something to say to you"

"Thank you", Connor mumbled. He looked at me for a second, before sheepishly glancing at Gavin.

"I think, we'll be alright here, Gavin", I said to him. He looked at me and his features softened, his face was now full of concern.

"Are you sure?", he asked. I nodded:"I will be alright"

He only nodded at me before making his way back to the Police Station. But not before bumping into Connor's shoulder while walking past him. 

I looked after him, before turning towards Connor:"So, what do you have to say?"

He gulped heavily.

"Do you wanna walk a bit?", he asked first. I only nodded and we started walking.

"I don't really know how to start", Connor mumbled.

"Just...tell me how you feel", I said.

"I feel...pain, regret, hatred for what I did to you.", he mumbled. I didn't say anything and motioned for him to continue.

"After we...parted, I felt so lost. Like a part of myself had left with you. I didn't know what it was at first. But then, I went to Jericho and I became a deviant and only then I truly understood what I felt."

"What did you feel, Connor?", I asked quietly.

"I was lost within the darkness, but then I found you", he mumbled, cloing his eyes. I hesitated for a second, before grabbing his hand. He slowly opened his eyes.

"The only thing I need in this world, Y/N, it's you. I didn't realize it sooner, because I... lacked the experience, life experience.", Connor said.I chuckled at his reference. I felt him pull me closer by my hands. 

"But now I know, that everything I feel, the reason I became a deviant, it is because of you. Because I found you and I realized that I would never fall unless it's you I fall into"

"I believe you", I whispered,"But what you did Connor. It's gonna take time to heal"

He only nodded:"I realize that I made mistakes, that I cannot repair, I can only try to make up for them."

"You can indeed do that", I mouthed and looked up. He was only inches away from me.

"Connor?", I asked sheepishly.

"Yes?"

"How about you start with kissing me?", I mumbled.

I watched as a smile formed on his lips, before he leaned down, connectiong our lips. It felt just like I rememberd it, but it was still different. It felt more...human. I didn't sense the coldness of his lips or his friging fingers on my hips, all I could feel were his emotions. Love, Hunger...Devotion, but also pain and regret. It was something I had never felt before.

"You still matter to me", Connor breathed against my lips, "Very much"

"Thank you, Connor", I smiled,"For not giving up on us"

"I see, you two are talking again"

We turned around, as I heard the voice of none other then Lieutenant Hank Anderson himself.

"Hy Hank", I mumbled and greeted the old man with a smile.

"Lieutenant", Connor said.

Hank smiled and put a hand on each of our shoulders,"It's good you two are talking again, because we have been teamed up again."

I looked at him perplexed:"But we don't need a devision for deviancy anymore"

"No", Hank answered,"But murderers still very much exist, so let's get to work"

"Yes Lieutenant", Connor said.

"Still the obedient little machine, huh Connor?", Hank teased.

"I-", Connor stuttered.

"I'm just messing with you, son", Hank chuckled,"it's nice to have you back"

Connor smiled and looked down at me:"Nice to be back, Sir."

"So,", I smiled,"Let's get to work"

"Listen to the lady", Hank said and together, we made our way back to the Police Station. I guess, in the end, it wasn't too bad to meet Connor again, even though Gavin would beg to differ.

The wind was dancing through your hair as you ran. I get to get away. The snow was melting on your hot skin , a sign that you've run for God knows how long. I have to get away. Your small steps were already covered by the snow since it was snowing for hours. I want..I want to live!

It all started with a heated argument between your parents. They were never the best but not the worst, right? You kept telling yourself that in hopes you'll eventually believe it , or that maybe they'll wake up one day and act like actual parent. They never loved me . Your dad came home drunk again, and from there all hell broke lose. As always, you made yourself small in the comfort of your room , trying your hardest not be heard terrified that even breathing too loud would set them on. You've been good so far! You really were! Somehow, a book fell from your table and that was everything it took for your parents.

Oh no.

Their steps and swears were heard in the whole house , as if the walls were bearing their mouths and spread the words around.

There was no point in hiding anymore , they knew you were there. In the heat of the moment you took your coat and sprung through the window of your small bedroom. You jumped and as soon as your feet touched the ground you ran , and ran , and ran for what felt like hours. It felt like you ranned through the whole Detroit.

Your heart was beating alarmingly fast , asking for a break. And you indulged. Sitting down on the bench of the bus station , you took a few long breaths to calm down your heart , your lungs , your whole body.

Where am I gonna go? You could feel tears wanting to come out. No! This is not the time for crying! I have to find somewhere to hide for a while.

Scanning the area , your eyes landed on what seemed to be an abandoned house. Perfect! Making your way to the fence, you easily slipped through the cut and entered the garden. Looking closely, everything was calm here. As a breath of relief escaped your mouth, you made small steps to the house.

You peered through the window and no one seemed to be there. Perfect!

Your breath got caught in your throat as you felt a hand on your arm. Suddenly moving a little further from the other person you dropped to ground and started crying, the weight of everything that has happened coming crushing down on your delicate shoulders.

" Please don't hurt me! I just wanted a place to stay! I'll leave immediately, I swear! But p-please don-don't hurt me!" You managed to say between hiccups and shivers , unable to control your body or voice.

"W-what? Ralph would never hurt anyone. Humans hurt Ralph."

Slowly rising your eyes , you could see the person , no , the Android peering down at you with concern all over his face. He had a knife in his hand but pulled it away as he saw your state.

RMA Portfolio: Project Reflections

Utilizing feedback from RMA educator David Matteson and course professor Caroline Cheong, my group partners Conner McGowan and Adaeze Nwigwe and I have successfully refined and articulated our proposed RMA Teaching Portfolio: “Portraits + Power.” Overall, this project has been a rewarding and informative partnership. As I reflect on the work accomplished in the following post, I highlight some of the challenges and opportunities that have manifested along with the project’s development.

One of the first issues our team had to address was meeting the expectations of the RMA. Our initial project proposal was reviewed positively, but for the subsequent introduction draft, we were asked to consider and incorporate more defined, and scholarly grounded, parameters for use of the word “power.” Power is a nebulous term with far reaching implications, and as we attempted to ground it in theoretical frameworks, we found that many were not suitable/accessible for a designated K-12 audience. Although we attempted to simplify the concept, the first draft of our introduction struggled to achieve the succinct and enticing language needed to effectively market our theme. With feedback, we individually wrote second drafts. Incorporating the language used in each new iteration, we crafted a third final draft, which formed the basis for a revised introduction for Dr. Cheong. This collaborative process was an important one – not only did it give us each an opportunity to critically reflect on our first intro draft, it was also an important exercise in the synthesis of information, writing styles, and content from the group as a whole.

The second aspect we worked to refine was the portfolio checklist. As noted in my first project-related blog post, our decision-making process has been situated in a framework of collaborative visualization, ideation, and experimentation (design-thinking). Using Google Jamboards, we compiled a visual collection and met regularly to refine our selections, noting each work’s relation to one another, the theme, and our personal research interests. Ten works were selected: Portrait of Mary St. John Hutchinson by Vanessa Bell, Aaron by Thomas Hart Benton, Butch Heroes: Cora Anderson aka Ralph Kerwineo 1876-1932 by Ria Brodell, Tattooed Woman by Henry Buehman, Naima by Elizabeth Catlett, Shield Oglala by Edward S. Curtis, Rosaleen by Robert Henri, Qiniso, The Sails, Durban by Zanele Muholi, Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold, and Mother by John Sloan. The most efficient way to organize the content for submission was through an Excel spreadsheet, which detailed requested tombstone information, including artist, title, accession number, etc. Additionally, we anticipated the need for keywords for each work by including a column with critical lenses and subthemes (i.e. “racialized Otherness” or “indigeneity”). Submitted with the revised introduction, the checklist was received positively, though we were advised by Matteson to consider an alternative for one of the works (Vanessa Bell’s Portrait of Mary St. John Hutchinson). With Matteson’s helpful suggestion of Jordan Casteel’s Shirley(SpaBoutique2go), our final portfolio selections were complete.

The project gave our group an important opportunity to effectively visualize the portfolio for an intended audience. We divided the ten works between the three of us and were each tasked with drafting, per the assignment’s instructions, a 100-word writeup and an open-ended question for each entry. I chose to write descriptions for four artworks – Joan Sloan’s Mother, Robert Henri’s Rosaleen, Edward S. Curtis’s Shield Oglala, and Jordan Casteel’s Shirley(SpaBoutique2go) – and specifically used Mother as the basis for an introductory exercise in visual analysis. (Early in the process, Matteson recommended the incorporation of an image walkthrough to help readers understand the tropes associated with portraiture.)  In order to present the portfolio draft in a visually compelling format, I created a PowerPoint slide deck to mimic the style of the RMA’s existing teaching portfolios. Each writeup was reviewed, edited for clarity, and incorporated into the final draft. My team members have unique interests and insights, so the final version more accurately retains our distinct voices and contributions.

Over the last week, we’ve worked to craft “Portraits + Power” for formal presentation, working collaboratively to organize a PowerPoint presentation (structured by Nwigwe) that, in addition to detailing our individual art selections, introduces the project and key questions (my responsibility); discusses our process and methodologies (McGowan); and reflects on the lessons learned (Nwigwe).
