A distractingly star-studded A-list cast, fronted by the trio of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, fails to save Russell’s extremely scattered post-WWI period drama loosely based on the 1933 Business Plot, a real-life alleged political conspiracy where wealthy bankers tried to overthrow FDR to install their own fascist dictator. It’s a madcap mess of a comedic mystery thriller trying to advocate the power of friendship over naked cynicism but rings hollow.

This is a lot like what I imagine a quirky, wartime-set Wes Anderson-directed ensemble period comedy like The Grand Budapest Hotel or The French Dispatch would be like if another misguided (and less talented) filmmaker tried to make it.

Tune Story 3 (2006)

With their beloved Hogarth preparing to leave for college, Sonic the Hedgehog (Roger Craig Smith), Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), Sticks the Badger (Nika Futterman), and the rest of the tunes find themselves headed for the attic but mistakenly wind up on the curb with the trash. Ooohhhh ok I need more info/snippets from ur WIPS "Lady Hoshi" and "Fight text"!!!!!! So intrigued. 🥰

Oooh, Lady Hoshi! I confess I'm struggling with this a bit, because I'm trying to write in Regency style. Basically it's a bit of a twist on the plot of Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer, what with Hoshi already being a card-shark in canon. Naturally she goes toe-to-toe with Lord Reed in a series of wagers designed to keep her away (he thinks) from his younger friend, Lord Mayweather. There's a sideplot involving her bosom friend, Lady T'Pol, and his, Lord Tucker. No snippets, as the writing is very much not up to scratch!

Yay, fight text! It's my repository where I write out fight scenes for use in my various action-related fics. Here's one I'm adapting for my dragon WIP.

Hoshi's sensitive hearing caught the sound of footsteps. Moving swiftly, they didn’t sound like T’Pol’s, and Malcolm and Trip were still too far away for it to be them. She took a step back, readying her swords just in case. And not a moment too soon.

The gold dragon came bursting out of the cloud of dust, in the form of a large, blonde man, dressed in gold armour and swinging a huge sword. It would have cleaved her in two had she not leaped backward lithely, crossing her swords to take the brunt of the blow between the blades. 

For a moment she stared into his blue eyes, his face contorted with rage, and then she kicked her foot into his chest, using it to launch herself into a backward flip as she released her swords from his blade. She landed on one foot, then the other, and spun swiftly to the side, her blades deflecting the big man’s sword as he lunged in a bid to pierce her belly.

She slashed at his neck, but he turned at the last minute so her sword deflected off the neck of the armour; he wasn’t wearing a helmet, but the collar of the armour protected his neck to a large extent. Still, he roared in anger as the sharp blade nicked his skin. 

As you can see, I really have a thing about badass Hoshi and using the fact that Linda Park was certified for combat and sword-fighting! Thanks for playing and for the ask!

Jesse Solar-Opposites (Mundane): One of the four tritagonsits. She is the chronicler of the family, daughter/replicant of Terry, step-daughter of Korvo, step-sister of Yumyulack and adoptive sister of Pupa and Sonya. When Jesse was a baby, Terry transformed into his Mundane form after Shlorp was attack by a monster. She is also the third person to not trust Beverly. (voiced by Mary Mack)

Pupa Solar-Opposites: One of the four tritagonists. He is a color-changing alien infant, adoptive child of Korvo and Terry and adoptive sibling of Yumyulack, Jesse and Pupa. (voiced by Sagan McMahan)

Ms. Frankie (Wolverine Mutant): The Health Class Teacher of Yumyulack, Jesse, Sonya and Pupa, best frenemy of Korvo and Terry and Principal Cooke’s girlfriend. She is the first one to not trust Beverly when she saw her visiting David and grows suspicious. (voiced by Kari Wahlgren)

Ms. Perez (Werewolf Mutant): The Gender Teacher of Yumyulack, Jesse, Sonya and Pupa, one of Korvo’s best friends and Mia’s love interest. She is the first person to witness Mundane Terry. (voiced by Natasha Rothwell)

Cherie (Goliath She-Hulk): A former Wallian hero who is one of the honorary family members of the Solars, Montez’s girlfriend, Pezlie’s mother and one of Korvo’s best friends. Alice (Medusa Mutant): A maid who formally works for Brandy and now works with Nova and Sherbet, new member of the Solar Opposites gang and the second victim of David, that led to her mutation at the pier. (voiced by Lauren Tom)

David Bushworth: The main antagonist. One of FBI’s most wanted criminals who escape and is the one who manipulated Beverly into trusting him, when he is really an insane criminal wanting to test dangerous mutation DNA on innocent people for cash. (voiced by Nick Nolte)

Beverly: The second anti-antagonist. A stubborn selfish and self-centered blond-hair woman who is rivals with Korvo and Nova and is jealous of Korvo’s brilliant work ever since he came to Earth and is later determined to strip away Terry’s Mundane form and end the monster thing, now knowing that it’s really part of his life-source. After being manipulated by David into trusting him and that those monsters are bad, she ends up causing big trouble for the family. (voiced by Selah Victor)

Tyler: One of the members of Beverly’s gang. He is hot headed and stubborn. (voiced by Andrew Rannells)

Shelby: A stubborn punk member of Beverly’s gang. (voiced by Noël Wells)

Gotham Rich People

So there are other millionaires and billionaires in Gotham besides Bruce Wayne.

I'll wait for you to get over the shock.

There are other stupidly rich people in Gotham. A thought that if you've really made it in stupidly rich society in the dc verse then you have to have some property in Gotham where you stay for like a month or so every year like it's the regency society season. It's a sign that you're so ridiculously rich that it doesn't matter if someone steals your priceless painting or holds you for ransom because you can afford it and still be ridiculously rich. You are rich enough that your bodyguards are so skilled that they can keep you safe in Gotham. Because people are stupid and people who are rich and want to be snobs about it and show off tend to be a little more so than not.

Ridiculously rich seasonal Gothamites will also absolutely think that being kidnapped and held for ransom by one crime family or another or a rogue shows a different level of quality and status. Because they are just that bored and just that rich. And it lets them deal with the ✨trauma✨ ala gallows humor.

Lex Luthor has a bunch of snobby rich people look down their noses at him because he doesn't have Gotham property (Bruce keeps outbidding him when he tries and then Tim does the same when Bruce is busy because neither want Luthor in their city though sometimes people just won't sell if they find out it's Luthor trying to buy the property because they don't want him in the city either) and while he's rich enough to make mechs to go after Superman he can't afford quality Gotham caliber bodyguards.

Oliver Queen might have had a tiny by rich people standards apartment in Gotham, he inherited it. It may have been destroyed during the quake. He doesn't bother to rebuild or buy a new one and just stays in fancy hotel if he has to be in Gotham for any length of time and grumbles that Bruce won't let him crash at his place.

Tim gets Drake Manor back, if he didn't have it already, and puts it in his and Kon's name so Kon can be smug at Luthor because Kon has property in Gotham. Tim might come up with another secret identity as Connor Luthor's Gotham bodyguard just for fun. Superman may be Luthor's villain nemesis, Tim is determined to make himself Luthor's social and business nemesis because Tim apparently doesn't have enough people who want his head on a pike. Also fewer people give Tim well meaning lectures against villainy when Tim makes trouble for Luthor than when he's made trouble for Clark after Clark has said or done something dumb to Kon. Plus having a business nemesis makes being primary shareholder in Wayne Enterprises less mind numbing for Tim.

These other stupidly rich people also end up getting fleeced for millions by the Waynes for the Wayne charities because if they're going to have all these extra idiots to keep an eye on then these extra idiots are going to pay for things like the road work that the city isn't paying for because the city budget was embezzled by some jerk who ran off with the money to some other hole in the ground.

If Jason is bored enough he will be one of those rogues who kidnaps one of the Gotham elite visiting for their maintain the status month and the ransom money goes directly to literacy and educational programs. This way his preferred causes are funded and he doesn't have to be stuck in a suit at a horribly boring gala where he has to be polite. He is also considered the top tier platinum star in rogues to be kidnapped by since he is professional, has kidnapped Waynes before (Damian convinced him to do it so Damian could get out of a series of civilian parties and go hang out with Jon instead and a few times Cass has gotten Jason to "kidnap" her so she doesn't have to deal with a gala either) and is known for returning people when the ransom is paid. He has, on occasion, returned people after the ransom demands were made and denied and it is later discovered that he took the ransom anyway and the person who denied to pay the ransom finds themselves in serious physical and legal trouble. Seasonal Gotham rich people will absolutely brag about having been kidnapped by the Red Hood who clearly has good taste in hostages.

“An idiot? That may be, but he’s an idiot with a large estate, and important friends.” The captain shrugs. “He might be Sir Idiot before all is said and done.”

“And am I to be Lady Idiot?” You rise, feeling as though the walls of the drawing room are drawing closer. Feeling the need to move. “I’ve never aspired to jewels and pin-money. A clergyman like my father would have at least been to Oxford. Or someone like—”

You bite your tongue.

You were about to say someone like you.

But Captain Pike… whose company is so entertaining, whose contributions to conversation can be so stimulating… who is so handsome — far better looking than the idiot, or any of the small number of other men who have paid attention to you — has shown you no particular partiality. He is simply a friend.

“Someone like…? Is there another gentleman whose attentions you would prefer to entertain? Perhaps you would like me to accompany you on a walk next time?”

“Oh, no.” You can see you have piqued his curiosity, but you move to stifle it. You shake your head, meet his eyes and put sincerity into your voice. “There is no one else.”

You find you’ve wandered to the window, and you peep out between the curtains. The gilded carriage is passing through the gate, taking your suitor away.

You turn back to Captain Pike. “I merely meant to say, someone I can talk to. But I had rather be an old maid, and dote on my nephews and nieces. My brother’s children.”

He stands, and joins you by the window. “Your brother is young yet, and the sea is a dangerous place.” His tone is serious for a moment, and you almost see storms in his blue eyes. But they turn amused, and the corner of his mouth lifts. “And I might not promote him to Lieutenant.”

You roll your eyes — you know him well enough to know his words are a provocation, nothing more. But he has a point — your brother cannot inherit your father’s livings. He will need the patronage of others to make his way in the world.

“Papa would appeal to the Admiral if you don’t. Fine, then, a governess, or a teacher at a school for girls. Or perhaps I shall cut my hair, don my brother’s clothes, and run away to sea myself. I don’t believe I would be the first to do such a thing.”

He raises his brows at that, surprised, then tilts his head, studying you. He was curious before, but this is something more. Still, you meet his gaze, and the moment holds.

“And how would a fine lady such as yourself like the sea, and all the privations we face in the Navy? Surely your brother has written to you of the hardships he faces aboard my ship?”

You incline your head. “He has indeed, on many occasions. And I know I would not… relish… engagements with the Spanish. But he has also written to me of palm trees, distant shores… sunlight sparkling on the ocean. I feel sure I could become accustomed to hard work, if it meant I was able to see some more of the world. If it gave me even some measure of the freedom that I lack in my present station.”

You sigh, looking out of the window again, to the tiny part of the world you know. “I suppose I shall have to marry the idiot, to protect my dear mamma in years to come if nothing else. And I do understand my fortune, truly. But… my dowry is next to nothing, and there are many other ladies who would near kill to be mistress of Hampton Park. Why does the idiot press these attentions on me?”

The door opens and your mother bustles in, followed by the housemaid laden with a fresh pot of tea and a plate of biscuits.

But you don’t think you imagine hearing Pike mutter, “Why indeed?” to himself in answer to your question.

HAMMOND!!! I love this fic, because I have a deep unwavering love for characters perceived as unlikeable, who are revealed to be given depth. This is such an interesting perspective to the entire Temeraire series, with SUCH a different dragon character from any in the actual series. Churki is such an interesting, stubborn, grandmotherly character who has taken Hammond upon herself like a plague. Fantastic fic, fantastic family dynamics, fantastic outside perspective to the series.

PIRATE KING LAURENCE. This reads as all the potential the original Laurence have, just if circumstances were slightly different. Fantastic look into the mechanics of having and loving a dragon, and a high seas adventure to boot.

OKAY I FOUND IT! This is from 2018. It was a little snippet I scribbled down to possibly expand later, of how dragons would work in space lol. BB-8 is Poe's sweet little combat dragon, Finn steals an imperial dragon- I don't remember the rest, but I had a whole AU planned for it lmao.

Dragons came in all sorts of shapes, after millenia of evolution.

Some were wingless, serpentine, and inhabiting aquatic planets where they filtered chlorine based bacteria through sturdy steel-like gills. There were dragons that hibernated in geothermal vents, emerging only with great cataclysm to breed and nest and kill, and sleep again. Like natural disasters. Once the ancestors of dragons long ago gained the ability of cosmic travel, wings scudding through light and solar radiation as easily as birds through air, they spread their seed across the universe and grew roots more varied and colorful than any other species.

The only dragons Rey had seen before had been the vast, cruiser sized things that traversed the deserts of Jakku.

Untamable by either the Resistance or the First Order; implacable, and crossing the stretching desert on clawed feet that shook the ground and made the sand jump for miles around. They survived almost entirely on starlight, with their vast wings built for the absorption of endless desert sunlight, like their star crossing ancestors, reluctant to fly. From a distance they looked almost like cruisers, with solar sails fluttering gently in the desert breeze, and the shimmering haze of the desert obscuring their tree-trunk like legs and low slung heads.

Some enterprising settlers had tried to harness them, in the fashion of colonized planets everywhere, who took advantage of whatever draconic species inhabited the area. Occasionally you’d still find remnants of the taming coalitions who’d made any kind of progress, their shattered bones sucked dry by the thirsty desert, and buildings smashed into shards of durasteel and permacrete.

The herds were unforgiving, and the ruins had been left to their sand and sun and gravel pits.

One taking rare flight was enough wind force to cause storms miles away, heaving the heavy, hot Jakku air like someone stirring soup. They could be seen as a shape in the sky even bigger than that of the two moons, wings that covered the stars and uncovered wrecks that were long since buried with the force of their winds. Scavengers scrambled desperately in their wake, risking the wrath of the herd for undiscovered wreckage.

Rey had seen one fly once when she’d been little and thirsty, dragging a load of fuses as long as her arm on a sled, and sweat sticking her hair to her eyes and face. She’d been covered in dust for days, caked so thick two rains hadn’t washed it away and she’d cracked at her elbows and knees where it had baked hard and red.

But the sight of those massive wings, and the dull mottled brown hide creaking into the cold air like an impossible thing had stayed in her dreams for weeks.

This one struggling in the Teedo’s net  was much smaller.

The fading sunlight made it hard to see, the shapes simply an outline of a struggle against the golden sand. But Rey had sharp eyes, and she hadn’t strained or exhausted herself nearly as much as she’d expected to today searching the remains of an Imperial series 5 cruiser. Made it easy to get involved.

“Hey!” There was no response from the Teedo at her irritated cry, only an angry shrill screeching that sounded almost mechanical, the dragon’s elegantly frilled head pinned against its side and claws tangled in the shredded net.

There were two Teedo, both lashing the net to their respective luggabeasts and chattering excitedly. Rey uncertainly thought she caught a few words about coin, and immediately felt a hot rage grip her throat, flipping from mildly irritated to furious. Enslavement wasn’t uncommon on Jakku, but it didn’t change the fact that she personally found it distasteful. She’d been saved from the fate multiple times only by the good will of Jabu, something in the disgusting man's morals holding to whatever contract had inclined him to hire Rey in the first place.

This was someone’s beast, judging by the Alliance-issue harness on it, and they were going to sell it as meat.

“I said HEY,” Rey skidded to a halt as she reached the bottom of the dune, and the little ragged figures jerked back, hissing and chittering angrily at her.

The dragon struggled anew at the interruption, shrieking in fury and kicking up enough dust with its free tail that Rey had to squint behind her own head covering. “That’s a Rebel dragon you’re taking to the slaughter,” She informed them coldly, raising her voice only slightly to be heard over the racket, and the chittering slowed to a sullen muttering.

“Yes! Yes, yes, home, Poe home gone other man take-” The dragon seemed overcome by this, and squalled in fury, jerking towards one of the Teedo, and almost shutting its teeth (net and all) over its extended arm, which was grasping the net. Its words were oddly stilted, short- although whether it was with stress or some impediment wasn’t very clear.

The Teedos shrieked in their own alarm, and in the brief moment they backed away from snapping jaws, Rey leapt over the wildly swinging tail and past their reach. She took her knife to the netting, glancing off of the hard sunset and steel-colored scales running from the dragons brow, to the tip of its tail. She sawed through the netting with no small amount of effort, arms burning and fingers slipping from sweat. The heat coming off of the dragon was incredible in the dry, brisk Jakku evening, and she thought surely it couldn’t be natural. It frizzled the hair on her arms, and rippled the air touching it’s scaly soft hide like an oven heating.

One of the little thieves realized what she was doing and crackled an angry warning, grabbing her roughly by the back of her tunic and throwing her onto the sand- but she was back up in a flash, yelling angrily and swinging the knife still in her hand in a short sharp arc that missed the Teedo by a bare inch. She bared her teeth, furious enough that the way the scavengers gripped their staffs and moved carefully forward didn’t scare her nearly as much as it should have.

But she’d done her damage. With a horrendous series of ripping pops, the net came away completely, and the dragon unfurled its wings and thrashed its way free of the net, knocking one of the luggabeasts over onto its side with a sad groan of metal and a weakly kicking leg. The net trailed sadly from its saddle as the dragon disentangled itself, almost frantic with its movements and chittering too fast for Rey to understand.

It let out a triumphant squall, and drew in an incredibly large breath, chest expanding unnaturally, and throat pouching now that it was freed- and with a clicking rattle like a ripper raptor-

It spewed a hot and dusty flame the color of the blue sands at night across the two who had trapped it. Indigo and glittering, the flame charred the sand enough that Rey thought she caught glittering hints of glass, throwing an arm across her eyes to fight the glare.

It was rife with a chemical fume that sent her staggering back, retching faintly and dizzy with the sudden smell of burning meat and the shrieking of the Teedo, whose arms waved frantically in an attempt to shuck the burning rags off of itself. The second was already prone on the ground and crackling like a merry blaze, the fire turning bright red and greasy as it ate away at its new fuel. The smell was horrendous, as if someone had lit a pile of sodden trash.

Suddenly there was a jerking around her waist that almost made her vomit, sharp and sudden, her breath leaving in a whoosh- and the two burning red dots were growing further and further away on the blueing sands as she was dragged into the sky.

Above her, the dragon shrieked victoriously and chittered and Rey cheerlessly wished that it had at least let her grab her pack half-depleted of ion batteries and broken medical scanners before flying them away.

14. Courtship Rituals by @impishtubist [Cedrarry, T, 4k] 🌼 🌹 Cedric tries to court Harry, but of course he's oblivious. This is cute and hilarious!

15. Yes, Minister by iamisaac [Kingco, E, 1.5k] 🔥 👔 This is pure filthy smut between Draco and his minister boyfriend. Hop aboard the Kingsley/Draco ship where there's mind-blowing sex and that sweet sweet age difference!

16. Gyre and Gimble by eldritcher [Drarity, M, 3k] 💔 ☀️ A stunning fic from one of my hands-down favorite authors! Draco is drawn to the prisoner in the manor's basement. Charity is perhaps a little mad.

18. Terms and Conditions by @maraudersaffair [Linnansy, E, 8k] 🌼 🔥 Pansy can't get over her ex (Ginny) and is stuck on a trip with Ginny's new girlfriend (Luna). This fic made me laugh, swear, and sweat all in one sitting.

21. Where You Belong by blue_string_pudding [Severus, T, 6k] 💔 🐀 This is probably the creepiest, most unsettling thing I've ever read. I completely ADORE it. But I was definitely checking around corners after reading it.

On Writing: Skating Around Weak Spots

Sometimes no amount of research is enough. That’s when things get tricky.

Sometimes there’s an aspect of your fictional world or culture you just don’t want to write. What that is, of course, depends on the individual writer. Some of us don’t like the grisly details of childbirth. Others are bored stiff by the myriad details you have to get right to keep a farm running. Still others hate the intricate details of tax law, and the loopholes thereof.

(I imagine most of us hate those.)

You get the idea. There are things that would logically be in a world, but when it comes to writing them? Your plotbunnies are, “Naah... don’t wanna.” So how do you handle this?

First and foremost - does it need to come up in the story at all?

Seriously, there’s nothing wrong with avoiding a topic you don’t want to write about. If you really hate something odds are you won’t write well about it anyway, and readers can tell. So avoid it. Conan the Barbarian doesn’t need to know knitting stitches and your crime-solving granny doesn’t need to know how far a foe’s head flies when it’s hewed off in one mighty blow.

...Well, usually she doesn’t. Eep.

A book is a small enough space to build a world in already. If something doesn’t have to be in there, you don’t need to put it in Just Because. Discretion, better part of valor....

Another option, if something you hate absolutely has to come up, is to foist it off on a background or secondary character. That’s what they’re there for; to handle everything your hero is too busy Fighting Evil to deal with. Batman has Alfred to run Wayne Manor and Lucius Fox to do all the tedious parts of being Wayne Enterprises’ CEO. Elisa Maza has all the other cops in NYC. The Doctor, at least when he’s on modern Earth, has UNIT. (Poor UNIT. Poor Brigadier.) As long as your readers know someone is handling those Things That Annoy You, you can glide past most of the details on how.

A third option is... tricky, and not always possible. I mean, if someone demanded I write a story in which the exact reactions of organic chemistry were a major factor, I’d be a cloud of dust over the far horizon. Likewise for, oh, baseball statistics.

There are some things that just do not interest me. I can’t even work up a good loathing rant for them.

However. If the chemistry was instead biochemistry, tied to how a specific living thing was supposed to work, or the statistics were on MMA or long-distance sniping... then the bunnies might nibble. Maybe.

Here’s a for-instance. One of many ideas I’m poking to see what the bunnies will bite on, involves a character keeping peace in a treaty port. Think something like Shanghai, Canton, or Hong Kong. Wherever you have two nations and cultures clashing, keeping any bit of peace is going to involve politics. And Social Occasions.

Now, the kind of character I have in mind is no social butterfly. But she has considerable power, and that means she will have to attend, and be civilized at, some parties.

“I hate social stuff. Are there any kind of parties I don’t mind reading about? Then I might at least fake something like it.”

Actually, there are. I like some Regency romances. And just because in real history this would be a Victorian and later time period - this is a fantasy. I can make the England-expy Regency era if I want.

And with luck, the shiny will patch the weak spot!

So it's like Heathcliff meeting Lord Henry Wotton essentially 👀 and they fall in love

It was almost enough for him to feel bad about the whole enterprise, he thought, watching as Hagan tried to ingratiate himself with sweet Will Hopper only to receive an accidental smearing of umber paint on his cream waistcoat for his troubles.
