Note
One shot request intruality, Patton and Remus having a conversation about their insecurities. Mostly focusing on how they both have times of struggling to understand the other sides ex. Making some changes
This isn’t exactly what was requested, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. I had a lot of fun with this one!
Word Count: 3,322
Summary: Recently, Patton and Remus's relationship has begun to change. When Patton lets a pet name slip by accident, a much-needed conversation takes place.
ao3 link
Sweet Pea
To say that Remus hadn’t been expecting any of this would be a gross understatement. He is by no means the kind of side to have too many expectations; when your whole thing is being unpredictable, you learn to stop expecting things and simply see what life chucks your way. Even so, having a relationship with Patton of any kind has thrown him for a loop like very few things can.
It isn’t as though Remus has a vendetta against Patton. Sure, the guy is a lot more clean-cut then his style, which is to say, not a rat-man, and he indulges in far fewer of life’s pleasures than Remus does, but he doesn’t hate him. For a while there, he’d been real fun to mess with, knowing Patton was so afraid of him. So much as walking into a room could set the fatherly side on edge, and wasn’t that just the best? He adored messing with any of the others, but Patton was by far the easiest.
The only problem is, it’s become a hell of a lot less fun with Patton since the massive shift that’s occurred between them. When Janus got accepted into the “good guys,” Remus was convinced that his role likely wouldn’t change – which he was totally fine with! He’s been the same old Duke for years, even if Thomas hadn’t known about him for almost the entirety of his life, and that was okey-doke. But… after Janus found himself a seat at the table, so it seemed, did Remus.
It isn’t as though he’s been given the green light to try and convince Thomas to do absolutely anything he wants to do, as fun as that would be. But the weird thing is, Patton had apologized to him. Morality, who’d been so wary of him for so long, had told him that he had been judging him too harshly and that surely, there was a lot of good in him. Remus isn’t one to have expectations, but that had struck him as odd. Why the fuck would Patton want him to be around, considering all he represented? Why would morality want anything to do with him?
As weird as everything is, Remus had been under the impression that Patton was merely tolerating him, maybe in an attempt to make the others believe he was making nice with everyone. At first, Remus kept up his usual behavior, obnoxious and crude, but it didn’t rattle Patton like it used to. Sure, he’d get a surprised shriek or two when he dangled from the ceiling from one of his tentacles or rose up unexpectedly, but then Patton would simply smile at him and say hello.
Patton isn’t scared of him, not anymore, and Remus doesn’t quite know what to do with that.
He’s used to others being unnerved in his presence, considering who he is. But since Patton has been alright with him hanging around them more and more, he’s noticed them doing more to tolerate him as well. Roman is, well, he isn’t complaining about him quite as much as usual. He’s even stopped chastising him every time he comes into the imagination claiming he’ll “Ruin everything!”, even if it is their shared domain. Virgil still seems fairly irritated with him, but that’s nothing new and Remus doesn’t mind. Logan is being far more considerate of him then he’d think, considering he’d chucked throwing stars at his face before. Janus has always at the very least tolerated him, so that’s just peachy-keen. The other sides are being considerate enough not to complain every time he’s near, but Patton has gone above and beyond in welcoming him lately. And that… is decidedly very weird.
He's invited him to come to dinner, even encouraging that he can eat whatever he wants, no matter how seemingly inedible it is. It’s certainly amusing to see the looks on the other’s faces when he sits down at the dinner table as if he belongs there; he doesn’t think he belongs there, but that’s beside the point.
Patton does everything he can to keep things civil at the table, to a point where Remus is almost impressed if he weren’t such an agent of chaos himself. He nips blossoming spats between Virgil and Janus in the bud as quickly as they arise and he tells jokes and puns that Remus can’t help but find a little endearing, in a silly, dad way. Remus decides to tell some jokes of his own, and while they are on the harsher and more disgusting side, he elicits a few chuckles from Patton while the rest of them simply roll their eyes.
It doesn’t make any sense; Patton has just stopped being terrified of him, and now here he is, morality, giggling at Remus’s mention of cannibalism. Has the world gone mad? Has he gone mad? Quite possibly.
Things only grow stranger from that point on. Patton speaks often with Remus, encouraging him that they are getting to be “real good friends” and Remus is even invited to movie nights (“I’m afraid your birthday suit is not an acceptable outfit for movie night, kiddo).
It isn’t hard to tell that the others are at least somewhat displeased with him being there, for the most part. Sure, Janus doesn’t have any problems with him, and Logan doesn’t seem to hate him, but Roman is clearly very agitated and Virgil seems to be doing everything in his power to ignore him. And yet Patton, of all sides, continues to provide so much warmth and joy his way it almost made him want to puke.
Remus isn’t used to this kind of treatment. Even with Janus, someone he considers his closest friend, there is very little affection between them. Remus is used to being the gross one, the nuisance, the “problem child.” Being fawned over is a completely new experience and one he can’t decide how he feels about. Patton isn’t scared of him anymore, and that was kind of a bummer at first, but now? Well, now Remus isn’t quite sure what the hell is going on.
After movie night of a few Disney films, everyone else had decided to hit the hay, yet Patton and Remus remain. Remus is sure any moment now Patton will rise from his spot and declare that he is going to sleep, too. Except… that isn’t what happens.
Instead, Patton asks Remus if he has any movie recommendations, something they could watch, just the two of them.
“I don’t think my kind of movies are really your style, Pattycake,” Remus insists, thoroughly shocked that Patton would so much as ask. The fatherly side shakes his head.
“Well, that doesn’t mean we can’t give it a try. I’d like to watch something you enjoy for a change,” Patton says, smiling kindly, “If it’s really that bad, I’m sure I could just let you know.” That seems okay, Remus supposes.
“Yeah, alright. But don’t complain to me when you get sweet little nightmares,” Remus warns, though in actuality he doesn’t plan on showing Patton anything too intense. Before, the idea of giving Patton nightmares was positively delicious, but now – now it made him feel kinda sick, and not in a good way, either.
Remus decides to pop in The Cabin in the Woods, seeing as it is a comedy as well as horror and fairly silly, despite the gore. He’s sure Patton won’t be too much of a fan of it and bail out early on, and yet here he remains, sitting close to him on the couch and looking intently at the screen.
Remus realizes maybe he doesn’t know as much about Patton as he thought he did when he giggles a bit at a scene of people being mascaraed by a large group of monsters running amuck, laughing particularly hard when a character meets a gruesome fate at the hand of a less than conventionally attractive merman. All the while the movie has been going, Remus notices that Patton has been inching closer and closer until his head is resting on his shoulder. The thought of Patton willingly being so close to him sends a strange feeling of contentment through him. For most of their lives, Patton has been so wary of him, and now he’s almost as close as he can get. Why would something as silly as Patton laying his head on his shoulder make him feel so strange?
Remus is almost positive that he is going to burst into flames when Patton smiles at him once the film had ended and says: “I don’t know what you were worried about. That was a really fun movie, Sweet Pea.”
Remus jerks away, scooting to the edge of the couch while Patton shoots him a look of concern.
“Remus, are you okay?”
“What… what did you just call me?” Patton blinks.
“…Huh?”
“You called me Sweet Pea. Why – why the hell did you do that for?” Even in the fairly dark living room, Remus can see the blush that’s spread across Patton’s face, meaning his own flushed cheeks are visible as well. Patton wrings his hands, apprehension present in the action.
“W-well, I dunno, I guess it just kinda… slipped?” Patton offers weakly, praying Remus will accept the answer without fighting it any more than that. Of course, that’s not to be the case.
“It slipped?” Remus asks incredulously. “Why in the world would you use a word like that to describe me?” Patton doesn’t respond for a moment, his eyes settled on his lap, refusing to answer Remus’s burning question. After a minute or so, though, Patton speaks.
“Things have been different between us lately, haven’t they?”
The question hangs heavy in the air. Remus barely knows how to respond. Of course, things have been different; Patton’s actively professed he enjoys hanging-out, to say things hadn’t changed would be a blatant lie.
“I mean… yeah. You’ve been all sweet with me, I guess. Which you get is weird, right?”
“Why would it be weird?” Patton asks, so genuinely it hurts.
“Because,” Remus says as though Patton’s a lunatic for asking the question, gesturing vaguely to himself, “I’m me! Intrusive thoughts, remember? Everything nasty that’s been shut away for the last thirty-years; everything you hate.” Patton’s mouth creases into a frown.
“I don’t hate you, Remus. I… well, I never have. I was just scared of you, once, but I just didn’t understand you then.” Remus scoffs.
“And now you understand me completely?”
“I never said that. But…” Patton hesitates, biting his lip before extending Remus his hand, “I want to. I want to know you better. I was so lost in the belief that I knew best for so long… and I’ll always be sorry for that. I’m sorry for the way that I treated you and Janus; it wasn’t right of me. Not at all. But I’m trying. I want to know you guys. I want to know you, Remus.”
Remus retracts his hand, the warmth in his chest bursting into flames, a fire that’s sure to burn down everything that it touches.
“You don’t want that,” he insists, his eyes training on the wall, eager to avoid the heavy weight of Patton’s gaze.
“But I do!”
“No, you just think you do,” Remus grits through his teeth, the fire bathing him in a horrible warmth, “You – you just think you want that. But you don’t. You’re too sweet for that. Too sweet to know me that way. You’ll quit while you’re ahead if you know what’s good for you.” Remus rises to his feet, positive the fire is enveloping him now, positive to burn him to the ground. With each passing second, he burns a little brighter, skin melting and bones turning to ash. The feeling is something horrible, he realizes, more abhorrent than anything he could possibly conjure.
Remus is falling in love with Patton.
Remus shivers as Patton grabs a hold of his wrist, keeping him from feeling. Doesn’t he get it; Remus is trying to keep him from perishing in the fire as well. He’ll die alone, go up and smoke if it means Patton is safe.
“Patton – let go,” Remus says, the request a beg more than anything else. Patton shakes his head, determination brimming in his eyes.
“I won’t. I’m not letting you leave, Remus.”
Remus pulls harder, shocked by the sheer strength Patton is exhibiting. If it were anyone else, he’d do anything to escape, biting, scratching, and clawing his way out, if necessary. But Patton isn’t anyone else and he’s been stupid enough to develop dangerously strong feelings. Patton calling him something so soft and painfully domestic has awoken something fragile in him, and he intends to put an end to it.
“Why not? Why the fuck are you trying so hard to be nice to me? Why do you care?”
“Because…” Patton swallows the lump in his throat, squeezing his eyes shut as he lets go and admits it, “I like you!”
“Wh-what?”
“I said: I like you. I’ve been spending time with you because I want to. I want you to feel welcomed, I want you to know you have a place here. But also because I like you. A lot.” Finally, Patton’s released him, and yet Remus can’t find it in himself to run away.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“But I do!” Patton maintains, his eyes burning with a sincerity that’s scaring the hell out of Remus, “Lately, I’ve seen you light up and… I like that. I like seeing you so much happier, I like seeing you and Jan joking in the commons and at the dinner table. I like it when you greet me in silly ways when you hang from the ceiling with your tentacles or jump from behind the couch. I like the time we spend together; I like that I’m getting to know you more.
“I like you, Remus. And if you don’t feel the same… then I understand. If I’ve made you uncomfortable, I’m sorry… again. But I need you to understand that I want this, I want to hang out, I want to watch movies that you pick out. I want you to be real with me because you can! I’m not afraid of you anymore, and I never want to be ever again. Liking you is much better than that.”
Remus doesn’t know how to respond. The fire is incasing him now, but he’s not sure if he’s going to be reduced to a pile of ashes anymore. Patton is offering so much, more than he realizes. He’s offering the kindness he’s already shown him, offering understanding unlike he’s ever known, offering intimacy unlike he’s ever experienced. And he could turn away and forget this ever happened if he so desired. Patton’s giving him that option, too, no matter how much it’s clear that he doesn’t want to. All because of some sappy nickname being said accidentally, Remus is being extended an opportunity he never envisioned for himself.
Remus has the chance to get to know Patton for everything that he is, faults and all, a chance to see the moral side down to his very core. And, in turn, he’s being given the chance to be known himself, in a way he didn’t think anyone would ever truly be interested. It would be a major understatement to say he’s a little overwhelmed.
“Do you… do you mean it?” He hates the vulnerability in his wavering voice, threatening to break. He hasn’t felt so overrun by emotions of this caliber in years, used to being brushed aside and ignored. Patton smiles, so genuinely Remus is almost positive the heart he wasn’t aware of owning is about to burst.
“With all my heart,” Patton says, and that’s the straw that breaks the Camel’s back.
Remus launches himself forward, throwing his arms around the moral side and burying his face in his neck. Patton stiffens for a moment, caught off-guard before returning the embrace with nearly as much vigor.
“Me too,” Remus says, his voice uncharacteristically soft as he clings to Patton, the fire no less lively but dying down in terms of threat, “I like you too, Patton. A-a lot. More than bugs, or blood and guts, or all the deodorant in the world.” Patton laughs at that, the sound bright and so full of joy as he runs a hand through Remus’s frazzled hair.
“Well, what a lucky guy I am,” Patton says, though his tone is nothing but serious.
After a moment they part long enough to sit back down on the couch, though Remus is quick to place himself right in Patton’s lap, his legs wrapping around the moral side’s waist. Remus has never known much in the ways of personal space and Patton is almost always eager to hug the nearest person to him, combining to an unlikely but very cuddly pair.
“Hey, Remus, how many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?” Patton asks. The smile that’s crept onto Remus’s face and refused to leave grows.
“I dunno, Pattycake, how many?”
“Ten tickles!” Patton says before unleashing an onslaught of tickles onto Remus, earning a trail of giggles Patton is sure is one of the loveliest things he’s ever heard.
“Sta-stop it! knock it off, Pat or I’ll-I’ll claw your eyes out!” Remus warns jokingly, peeling off into another peel of laughter before Patton stops.
“Hey, Sweet Pea?” Patton asks after a moment. The nickname surprises Remus, but this time he’s a little more prepared for it.
“Yeah?”
“Can I kiss you?” He asks softly, his hands cupping Remus’s face gently. Remus nods quickly, smiling as Patton leans in and closes the gap. The embrace is gentle, perhaps gentler than would be expected of Remus, but it’s nothing short of incredible. Remus relishes in the feeling of Patton’s soft lips, his hands burying themselves in Patton’s curls.
“Hey,” Remus says as they break apart, already intent on kissing Patton senseless the next chance he gets. For now, though, he’s drowning in the warmth that’s surrounding him, in the softness he’s suddenly been allowed.
“Hi,” Patton responds, his smile just as wide as Remus’s.
“You’re a damn good kisser, Cookie.” Patton turns three shades redder in a matter of seconds. “Aww, you got all embarrassed! You like me calling you my cookie?”
“Stop it, Remus!” Patton says with a giggle.
“What? You’re so sweet, I can’t help it.” “Remus.”
“Oh, so you can call me sweet pea, but I can’t call you cookie. How’s about my buttercup? Honeybee? Cutie Pie?”
“Remus,” Patton says, before pressing his lips to the intrusive side’s again, effectively silencing him.
Not long ago, Patton was terrified of Remus. Terrified of what he represented and what that could mean for Thomas. But that isn’t the case anymore, not nearly. Affection has grown between them without either of them realizing. They still don’t entirely know each other, not yet. But they will. Patton’s grown so much, accepting the faults in his thinking, and with Remus’s help, he’s sure he’ll continue to change for the better.
Remus never counted on intimacy, not seeing how it could possibly be in the cards. And yet here he is, embracing someone he hasn’t always understood but is now so desperate to now. Remus doesn’t entirely know if he’s built for this kind of tenderness, knowing that it wouldn’t be impossible for things to shift back and for Patton’s fear to remerge. For now, though, Remus doesn’t focus on the nagging thoughts of what could go wrong, simply embracing what’s right in front of him.
They put on another movie, going to bed at a reasonable time out the window, though it takes very little time for them to fall asleep in each other’s arms, the TV still playing some long since forgotten horror movie.

Okay, I'm all for the kinky Remus HCs and stuff, but lemme give you a somft one real quick.
Remus is so fucking good with children. Like, this man is a holy mix of Roman and Patton when he's around these little monsters.
Sure, he talks about killing babies and shit, but put him in a room with kindergarten students and he'll immediately walk over to one of the kids that's sitting alone and coloring or something and Remus, with the softest smile ever, is just like "Hey Buddy, what 're you doing there?" in a gentle voice and it's so adorable.
Or even in a universe where all of the sides were adults even when Thomas was a kid, and Remus is just proudly watching Thomas solve his first math problem or something along with Logan. Or Thomas makes cookies for the first time with his mom when he's seven and Remus is holding back the biggest grin as Patton cheers loudly.
Really, Remus had his moments. And that's his job. But to be honest, he could be a sweetheart sometimes.

i want to do headcanons for the sides very loosely based off things about myself so here goes lol
random domestic hcs because i just want them all to get along again woop
virgil has a galaxy backpack that he’s emotionally and physically attached to
he takes it everywhere even if he’s only put like his phone inside n nothing else
logan tries to tell him that he doesn’t have to take it everywhere and virgil’s like “you can pry this backpack off my cold, dead shoulders”
logan zones out and he goes all s p a c e y for a few minutes just cause he likes to follow his trains of thought n then suddenly he’s floating in the void with his body somewhere else
patton’s usually the one to bring him back with somft gentle touches so he doesn’t startle him
twins being bros time!! remus having separation anxiety
remus has social anxiety and if he goes out anywhere in public with roman he can’t be separated from him or he’ll get super nervous
remus is probably also the type to be a lot more feral around just close friends and he still has his funky weird lil qualities to him that he shows about everyone but he’s just shakey nervous in large public spaces
in one of my aus janus shows separation anxiety at some point too? but with virgil
separation anxiety janus is also valid
patton gifts both virgil and remus different kinds of fidget toys for them to try and tell him how much they help them
virgil likes the fidget cube, the rubik’s cube and the tangle toy and remus likes the stress balls and the squishy stretchy people thingies n generally anything with goo
speaking of the rubik’s cube logan is a speedcuber (something i didn’t know existed until recently) and one time patton walked in on him speedcubing n he was like,, wow
logan teaches virgil the algorithms so they can cube together
virgil doesn’t do it for the speedcubing, he just likes solving it because it gives him something to focus on other than his anxiety
roman doesn’t use the fidget toys very often but one time he picked up virgil’s tangle toy just because he was interested and fell in love with that plasticky sound it makes
and virgil noticed and got him one of his own!! a red and gold one
now roman messes with that when he’s writing or brainstorming
logan the weightlifter hjfhghjfgd
logan does pushups with patton sat on his back n patton’s just reading
swole lad
in fact he competes with roman because they’re both swole lads
logan does pushups with patton on his back, roman does squats with virgil on his shoulders
patton and virgil like making casual conversation while they’re both being moved up and down
and in return for making him stronk logan will help patton clean his room when he accidentally lets it get too messy n then it stresses him out and makes him feel down n tired all the time
when they clean up his room together patton looks physically happier just in his posture and the tone of his voice and he doesn’t even have to smile to convey that difference
the first time that happened logan’s heart exploded he just had to kiss him ykno
sometimes virgil will even do the same with roman
virgil stress cleans!! he’ll just walk into roman’s room and start vacuuming and it’ll wake up roman because what the heck it’s 6am virge why
but roman very much appreciates it because virgil has this way of cleaning where he’ll recognise the “organised mess” and try not to disturb the order while still making the room look nicer
patton calls himself the therapist of the group but when patton’s down for the count janus steps in and he does a great job
i think all of them would have at least a little bit of depression so even someone so caught up on chores like logan can sometimes be too unmotivated to maintain himself and janus will help him to do those things like collecting laundry and taking breaks to drink water while also checking up on his mental state and eventually getting him to a state where he can do those self-sustaining things by himself
the worst ones for depression are virgil, patton and logan but they all suffer because i said so hjdfghdfjghd
virgil’s got that co-morbid anxiety/depression going on and patton n logan are both similar in how they have a lot of feelings and don’t know what to do with them
this got sad lemme add some fluff ahgdjdfhdf
hugs from roman!! he has a shirt that says “free hugs” and when he wears it he just stands in the doorway to someone’s room and t-poses until he gets a hug
the day’s hug priorities are sorted by general mood
today virgil hasn’t come out of his room so he’s getting the cuddle attack until he finally comes out for food
and since roman’s a swole lad and virgil’s a small lad those hugs r just the best
even if logan will try to be indifferent about physical contact sometimes he can’t help but just slump into roman’s arms and stay there forever because mmm comfy
nice
that’s all i got for now lol

Any more lil tidbits or ship somfts for the btob au?
oh of course
Roman loves swing music (and dancing - he took lessons when he was younger); he played clarinet in middle school (before he had to quit band for cheerleading and theater) and learned a whole arsenal of swing melodies on it - Dee and Virgil find this out when asking Remus if Roman can play any instruments beyond singing
(Virgil asks Roman about it with the intent to jokingly make fun of him, but Roman gets so excited to talk about it that Virgil can’t bring himself to interrupt)
Logan and Patton are still best friends in this au because i adore them as besties; it’s kind of funny to see them together because Logan dresses like a bookworm from the 90′s and Patton wears pastel sweaters so it’s like. suede earth tones next to a cupcake
Dee has a secret not-so-secret obsession with poetry
Shortly after the band makes Roman get an outfit upgrade, they decide, eh, the leather jacket isn’t really working (and it’s Remus’ thing anyway - his is kinda ripped and has a bunch of pins and patches on it) so they get Roman a faded red flannel to wear over his t-shirt instead. It still doesn’t vibe all the way so Virgil stares for a second, takes off his beanie, and puts it on Roman and BOOM vibes
(Yes there’s a moment when Virgil is fixing it on Roman and their eyes meet for a good few seconds before Virgil clears his throat and steps away. Roman thinks it’s sweet anyway)
Patton loves cooking, especially traditional Puerto Rican dishes his mom teaches him
Patton and Remus are actually friends - they had a cooking class together in sophomore year, and Patton is one of those “you guys just hate some kids because everyone else does, at least get to know them first” kinda people so he went up and reintroduced himself (they’ve known of each other for a long time, but they’d never really talked). Remus is of course Remus and they kinda clashed for a while but Patton is relentless so now their friendship is kinda just
Remus: *says something weird*
Patton: i don’t want to know what that means but you sound excited so i will be excited as well :D
Dee and Remus hang out in odd places in school just to see people’s reactions
For example: window sills that, by all laws of physics, should not be accessible
Roman and Dee actually get along really well, especially during rehearsals because they both will just start reciting monologues at any given moment. Remus and Virgil are lowkey convinced Dee suggested they get Roman to join just so he could do two-people scenes with someone competent
Virgil misses every Thursday band practice (therapy sessions) and Dee and Remus use those days to tease Roman relentlessly about him, even though Roman doesn’t even acknowledge he has a crush. It’s hilarious
There’s a moment, after a while of Dee purposely seeking Logan out to just chill and talk to him, where Logan stops in the middle of his sentence to stare at Dee and ask why they talk so often. Dee tells him he genuinely just likes hearing what he has to say. Lo says, incredulously, “I’m not that interesting.”
And Dee just shrugs and says, “I’m interested.”
anyway i love them

Hi :""") do you have,,, any,,, somft headcanons at the moment,,, to share? if that's okay
yes i very much do here is somftness for u!!!!!!
is patton good at baking? no. is logan good at baking? no. is each of them weirdly good at very specific recipes and absolutely nothing else? you bet!!!
((they have competitions to see who can make their specialty thing the best but there’s never actually a winner, bc they get distracted and end up watching movies and eat all the stuff they made before any of the others can try it))
if any of the sides are ever feeling tense and stressed, roman appears to give them Affection!!! he’s very good at hugs and like, massages, but even if its not physical affection he’ll just offer a reassuring presence
janus always leaves little gifts outside everyone’s doors and he always says it wasn’t him but they all know it was and appreciate the trinkets he gives them
virgil’s eyeshadow doesnt just become purple when he’s super excited, it can be other colors at other times of high non-anxiety emotions. he gets a little self conscious of having his extreme moods projected for everyone to see but they all reassure him that he never has to show them if he doesnt want to and theyll always be there if he does want to show them
the twins!! playing video games together!! if remus picks its usually a horror game and if roman picks its usually like, mario of smth but then u have games like minecraft with unlimited creative power and they both just go absolutely wild. you’ve heard of good speedrunners and fighters and parkour-ers now get ready for the most beautiful houses you’ve ever seen and the craziest most detailed custom-monsters
((yknow how remus just screeches in dwit?? thats just him mimicking the enderman screechy noise aldkaldl))
logan always makes sure everyone keeps a consistent healthy sleep schedule, but sometimes he and one of the other sides just get so caught up in whatever theyre doing—talking, brainstorming, whatever—that they end up staying awake late, but the other sides certainly aren’t complaining bc sleepy logan is adorable logan. and maybe logan likes spending time with the other sides too but shh dont tell anyone he has a reputation!! (they know, anyway)
patton and remus have HUG WARS. who can tackle-hug the other sides more (with permission!!), who can surprise hug the other, who can hug the longest. sometimes they just sit hugging for literally an hour just looking over each other’s shoulder to continue doing whatever they were doing before
big cuddle piles!!!! patton is on the outside and tries to hug them all at once which he can bc he is tall and has long arms!! virgil and logan also tend to stay on the outside but theyre usually holding someone’s hand and still close enough for that warmth. roman and remus squish janus between them bc theyre the warmest and jan gets cold bc snake. these can happen at any time and if one of the sides is missing they will be immediately located for Maximum Cuddle Pile Softness

No one asked but here are my takes on the TSS dynamics/preferences for portrayals
Moceit; Familial, brothers specifically (preferably with Janus being the older brother)
Moxiety; Familial, father-son with Patton being the dad (their dynamic is so somft guys)
Royality; Familial, father-son with Patton being the dad (anything with Patton being proud of Roman, tbh)
Intruality; Familial, father-son with Patton being the dad (Let Remus have a dad too)
Logicality; Platonic, best friends (especially in AUs where they’re friends from childhood who stick together despite diverging interests...good shit)
Loceit; Platonic, friendly rivals (anything where they engage in good faith discussions or tease each other....excellent content)
Logince; Familial, father-son with Logan being the dad OR teacher-student with Roman being the student (specifically the problem student Logan has a soft spot for)
Intrulogical; Platonic, lab partners OR Familial, father-son with Logan being the dad (either way they’ll be doing ill advised science experiments)
Analogical; Familial, father-son with Logan being the dad OR teacher-student with Virgil being the student (gifted depressed kid and teacher who supports him dynamic ftw)
Prinxiety; Platonic, enemies to best friends (Highschool AUs where Roman is a Theatre kid who tries to get Virgil to ‘come out of his shell’ while Virgil desperately tries to explain what an introvert is)
Roceit; Platonic, not-so-friendly rivals...specifically theatre flavored OR familial they’re both the gay cousin OR familial with uncle Janus and nephew Roman (mostly for the one human AU I have but lemme have my bias.
Creativitwins; Familial, brothers. This one is canon so you can’t even fight me. (I especially have a bias for Remus despite being...Remus...has a soft spot for his brother and /will/ protect him if necessary)
Anxciet; Familial with uncle Janus and nephew Virgil OR Estranged friends to friends again (please Thomas let them make up I beg you)
Dukexiety; Platonic, reluctant allies to friends (set when Virgil is a dark side or AUs where Virgil remains a darkside) OR unlikely friends (human AUs where they’re both “the weird kid”)
Dukeciet; Platonic, chaotic best friends OR familial with uncle Janus and nephew Remus (there’s that darn human AU again)

Complexities Unknowable- Chapter 4
Ao3, chapters  1   2   3   5,  MasterPost
Relationships: Deintruality, background Analogince
The plot of this was lowkey destroyed because apparently Patton and Janus are already somft, but that’s fine. I will continue to call Janus ‘Deceit’ throughout this entire fic to maintain consistency, just so you know. Also, this one’s a long boy, so strap in.
Warnings: Descriptions of gore/body horror (Remus stuff, nothing super bad), swearing, all sympathetic sides, lack of sleep, light arguing, food mention.
Word Count: 2,536
“Did he come back this morning? What did he say?”
“He didn’t do anything bad. Well, nothing super bad. I’m kinda getting used to it.”
“That’s worse!” Virgil was perched on the arm of the couch, staring up at Patton with troubled eyes. Beside him Roman and Logan sat together, the latter looking much less invested in the argument (though he was letting Virgil fidget with his fingers so as to avoid picking apart the threads of his hoodie).
“It’s not so bad. I think he’s just looking for someone to talk to!” Well, it was like that by now. Patton knew that that wasn’t how it started. It had been about two and a half weeks since Remus had first started popping up to meet Patton before breakfast, and he’d grown quite accustomed to it. Deceit often showed up at night, but his schedule was more sporadic. They did their best to upset him, but the emotional side refused to be mean, no matter what they did!
But then he’d found that, as their interactions continued, they got much less distressing. They were something else entirely. Odd enough that Patton couldn’t keep himself from telling his family any longer.
“Just ignore him; he’ll get bored.” Roman said tiredly.
“True; if you want them to stop bothering you, it’s best to just not give the two any attention,” Logan added, prompting Roman to give a proud little smile and hum.
Patton shifted, taking a moment to respond. He wasn’t sure he wanted them to stop bothering him.
Remus grinned at Morality for the second day in a row as he walked into the kitchen. Today, his hand was pressed firmly against the hot stove, skin bubbling in plain view.
“Oh! You’re back!” Patton forced a smile as he watched Remus nod and remove his red, blistering hand from the burner and heal himself instantly.
“Yup! Happy to see me?”
Patton  inhaled deeply, pressing his hands against his face. Though his eyes were covered, he could hear Remus giggling to himself.
“Can I- Can I help you with something?”
The Dark Side seemed to mull the question over for a moment, and then placed his hand back down on the active burner and shrugged. After getting bored with the stove trick, he sat up and grabbed a knife from the block and stabbed it down between each of his fingers repetitively. Patton stood awkwardly, unsure of what to do. In his own kitchen.
You know what? If Remus wanted to hang around while he made breakfast, then the more the merrier! Morality decided he could ignore the occasional tearing sound of a knife on flesh, putting on the coffee pot for when Logan and Virgil eventually woke up.
He continued on for a while, making pancakes in relative silence. Until his company got bored.
“Why do you do this every morning?”
“Make breakfast?”
Remus nodded.
“I do it because it’s nice to do something nice for the other sides.”
“Yeah, but why?”
“They’re my family,” Patton answered with a smile. The Duke seemed to toss the answer around in his head for a minute.
“I mean, I can see how they’re each other’s family, cuz they’re fucking- what makes them your family, then?”
They’re sides like me, he could’ve said, but caught himself. We care about each other, was another answer that probably wouldn’t be great. So he didn’t say anything, faking distraction.
“If you were me,” Remus continued, voice dipping, “You’d know that family means a whole lot of nothing.”
The statement had that odd quality of recitation. He was quoting someone. The usual energy with which The Duke spoke was diminished, but before Patton could ask anything about it, footsteps rushed down the stairs and Remus was gone in a blink.
Part of him was happy that they’d grown on him- because it proved that he wasn’t nasty or mean- but a much larger part was very, very guilty. He was so sure that they were that they were the mean ones, but now he couldn’t tell. He’d been wrong before.
Patton loved his ‘family’, he really did, but not the way they did each other. Truth be told, he’d also been looking for someone to talk to.
“You’re back,” Patton acknowledged, his eyes barely open. Deceit didn’t look even a twinge sleepy, dressed as formally as he ever was and sitting with perfect posture. This was the fourth time.
“Don’t sound too excited, Morality,”
“Why are you here, again?”
“Oh, I’m wounded. I can’t just stop by to see my favorite side?”
Deceit had seemingly recovered from whatever had him acting less cruel in their previous interactions, but Patton couldn’t say that he was surprised. He wasn’t an idiot. If this was the game they were playing, then fine. Fine.
He paused the episode of Steven Universe he was rewatching and clicked back to The Good Place. It was the episode they’d left off on a few nights before.
“What are you doing?” Deceit sounded surprised. Patton shot him a look.
“I’m putting on something we both like. It’s considerate. And don’t worry, I didn’t watch it without you.”
The reptilian beside him scoffed, but he didn’t say anything, so. Point for Patton.
They got through a full episode before Deceit spoke up again, pretending to inspect his nails through his gloves.
“You’ve got quite the healthy sleep schedule.”
“You’re up too,” was the nicest way Morality could think to phrase, you’re one to talk, jerk.
“I have the self-respect to sleep in late. I absolutely abhor the nighttime, but I’m guessing you’ve got another reason being up so late. Isn’t that right?”
Patton paused the show.
“You really wanna know?”
“Please, enlighten me.”
The goal here, it seemed, was to upset and confuse. And the best way to trip up deception was by being honest, truly and completely.
“I just need to not think. Just for a little while. It’s so hard not to think about all the not-great things I’ve done,” he’d never told anyone how bad it got at night. Maybe that’s what made it so easy to tell Deceit, to get some of the pressure off his shoulders with someone that wouldn’t look at him so pityingly. It was good to tell someone who wouldn’t care.
It was a while before Deceit replied.
“That was the first true thing you’ve said to me, I think. I suppose I should return the favor-” And Deceit looked at him, completely understanding, “Since you were so surprised to learn we found you unpleasant, Remus and I decided to show you why that was. In a way. But maybe that’s not what either of us need.”
Patton finally glanced up, eyes wide. The fact that it was some malicious plot was unsurprising. The second statement was both surprising and confusing. But Deceit wasn’t meeting his eyes, and it was far too late to try to pry anything more out of him. So they just watched TV. Together.
“Pat?”
Virgil’s voice broke him from his thoughts. Patton made sure that he was smiling before he looked up.
“Is there something you aren’t telling us? You’re kinda radiating anxiety right now, buddy,” Virgil’s face darkened, “Did they do something to you? So you won’t-”
“Or can’t,” Roman added.
“-Or can’t ask for help?”
Patton appreciated the concern, but he couldn’t help it if the insinuation that they would control him made him wince a disgustedly. How could they really think that Deceit or Remus would do that? (he was pointedly ignoring the part of himself that thought they did things like that less than a month ago.)
That morning, when Remus swung down from the top of the fridge in his kraken-like form, Patton hardly blinked. He yawned, in fact, smiling sleepily.
“G’morning.”
Remus picked himself up off the floor and shapeshifted into his usual appearance, pouting.
“Aww, you’re desensitized.”
To be fair, he’d done this every morning for the past two weeks. Patton was quite used to the company, but he still threw his hands up and gave a very fake scream for Remus’ sake. That turned Creativity’s expression right around to a grin and he bounced his shoulders in a laugh. It was oddly cute.
“Hey, I like this,” Remus announced, bending back the prongs of a fork. Morality smiled to cover up that he had no clue how to respond. He almost thought it was some kind of lure, and he wasn’t losing whatever this game was to them. But, Deceit had implied that whatever plan they had was disbanded. But Deceit was Deceit! But that moment had seemed so sincere, and honestly, he wanted to like this too-
“Your eggs are burning,” said Remus, right against his ear. Patton startled at the sudden proximity, and also at the fact that he was totally botching breakfast. Family breakfast.
“Shucks- Thanks-” he hastily took the pan off the heat, “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, but you might not like the answer,” The Duke warned, likely having no idea what Patton was going to ask about but knowing it was applicable regardless.
“Why do you always leave when the others wake up?”
He scrunched up his face, pausing whatever it was he was doing with a spare handful of forks. Morality had noticed that his various disturbing activities had gradually gotten a lot less deliberately upsetting and a lot more like he was just trying to keep his hands busy while chatting.
“‘Shucks’ is just a combination of shit and fuck,” he said instead of answering.
“Language!”
Patton let him change the subject; it wasn’t his business, anyway. Remus cackled- part relief but mostly genuine amusement- and carried on as though nothing had happened. Morality listened to him ramble, and looked over when Creativity wanted to show him some piece of art or his rapidly expanding silverware sculpture. Eventually, when footsteps filled the house and Remus was gone, Patton noticed an aching pain in his face. He quickly realized it hurt from how wide his smile had been.
Oh- maybe ‘desensitized’ wasn’t the right word for how he felt about the Dark Sides.
Morality was going to defend Remus and Deceit. Just like he’d defended Virgil to the others all those years ago, before everything (funny, that, and how the three of them ended up together. Maybe if traits listened to him more, they’d see he ended up right sometimes. And Patton hoped- believed- he was right about this).
“I don’t need help, and they didn’t hurt me! Honestly, they may be a little eccentric, but they aren’t… evil.”
Three sides gazed incredulously at Patton. He couldn’t blame them, for as soon as he said it he could only hear it as something someone else would be telling him. He remained unwavering regardless.
“Well, of course they aren’t; they are sides of Thomas like the rest of us, and naturally they strive to do what they think is best for him. But, their methods and wants are unrealistic at best and extremist at worst, so it is fair that we’d be concerned.”
Virgil grumbled low in his throat, looking slightly mollified.
“I- well- yeah, I just don’t want Patton getting in over his head.”
“What now?”
It was the first night since their last weirdly emotional conversation, and though Remus showed up everyday, Morality had almost thought it was the last he’d seen of Deceit. He was relieved it wasn’t, and his question really wasn’t meant to come out that way.
“You totally don’t just have to ask me to leave. It’s not like I’m no longer here on false pretenses- wait, not no longer- I confused myself,” while he was trying to parse out his own words, Patton let out a slightly surprised laugh.
“No, it’s alright, I- um, I’m used to you guys being around.”
The inaccuracy of the word “desensitized” once again flashed in his mind as he saw Deceit tamp down a smile, barely hiding the way his fangs peeked out.
“Well, I still haven’t seen the series finale of The Good Place, so I might as well stay,” he drawled in feigned indifference.
“The show just wouldn’t be the same without your running commentary,” Patton playfully nudged the liar’s shoulder.
They watched half of season four in one sitting.
Patton ran a hand down his face and groaned, earning a concerned look from his best friend.
“I’ll tell you if I need help, I promise. But I need you to trust me that, right now, I’m okay.”
“I trust you,” Virgil replied without hesitation, “It’s them I don’t trust.”
“Well, why not?”
Logan and Roman exchanged knowing looks while Anxiety tensed his shoulders. He huffed, eyes downcast.
“I mean… it’s not exactly a secret that I didn’t leave on great terms. I wouldn’t be surprised if they still had it out for, like, all of us, due to association. Especially considering-” he gestured to Roman, who gave a solemn nod. Patton briefly reflected on the terrible fact that nobody in his life could communicate effectively (including himself (wow, maybe some of Deceit’s bitterness was rubbing off on him)).
“That’s a risk I’m willing to take if it means there’s a chance that we’ll all come out of this for the better!” At this point it was unlikely that there was any risk, but arguing with his family made his head hurt.
“If you think you can get them to be cooperative, then I’m all for it. Our current state isn’t exactly sustainable in the long term, so we’d better resolve the issue sooner rather than later,” Logan said.
“It would be nice to not have to worry about those guys all the time, I guess. If you really think you can get them under control,” Virgil shifted uncomfortably.
“Yes- but if they do get out of hand, I will take care of them for you, Padre!” Roman flew to his feet with a self-assured smirk, eyes blazing like he could see the scene before him as he summoned his sword.
“That...  is very sweet. I’ll keep that in mind, Ro,” Morality gently patted his arm, subtly trying to guide the sword out of its path of destruction.
As the conversation lulled, Patton made his escape, calling out an excuse of making lunch.
As Patton tidied his work space, his eyes flicked over the counters. He spotted a disheveled black sketchbook that lay forgotten by the stove, its cover swallowed by stickers and doodles which were unmistakably Remus’.
That morning, The Duke had wandered in and pushed himself up onto the counter, holding out his sketchbook wordlessly, a smile on his face. It was routine by that point, but Patton was still ecstatic every time he got to see the art. While it was horrifying almost all the time, his love of drawing overpowered his disgust and he couldn’t help but shower the pictures with compliments (seeing the way Remus’ usual manic expression softened with appreciation was also a bonus).
After peeking his head around the corner to ensure that the rest of the sides were sufficiently distracted, Patton grabbed the lost leatherbound book and sank out to return it.

When Janus walked into the room he was not expecting to find himself with a lapful of Virgil.
And yet.
Here he was.
When he had first been greeted with the sight of an adorably tired Virgil his first instinct was to smile at him and  walk away. But something inside of him, left over from the time when they weren’t enemies, when they were friends and surrogate parents and loved each other had to go check on him.
So, he might have walked over and swept the bangs out of Virgil’s face and smiled softly at his sleeping face. And then been promptly pulled down.
Virgil nosed his way closer, setting his head in Janus’s lap and letting out a happy sigh. Janus tried as hard as he could not to move.
Virgil’s eyes opened a crack, a smile pulling up the corners of his lips.
“Hey, Janny.” He said, a yawn making its way out of his mouth as he snuggled closer to Janus’s side.
His breath caught in his throat. Virgil hadn’t called him that in years. He tried not to get too hopeful. Virgil was half-asleep, after all.
His heart plummeted. What if Virgil didn’t want him here at all? Sure, he seemed to want it now but what if he didn’t want it later, when he was in his right mind? What if he was mad at Janus? What if the others were mad at Janus? Whatifwhatifwhatif-
At that moment, Patton walked in. Janus froze. But all he did was smile softly at the two of them, before walking over and plopping himself in what was now a cuddle pile.
“Hey kiddos.“ Patton murmured sleepily, taking off his glasses and resting his head on Janus’s shoulder. Janus stared at him. Patton squinted back.
“I-“ Janus stammered. “What are you doing?“
Patton looked at him like he was stupid. Janus was beginning to think he was.
“Cuddling with you?“ Patton said incredulously. “Because you’re comfy?“
Janus opened his mouth. Closed it. “Um.” He said eloquently. Patton smiled fondly, shaking his head before closing his eyes and supposedly drifting off to sleep.
Janus wondered if this could get any weirder.
Apparently, it could.
Logan came in with a book, greeting Janus with a small smile before sitting down on the other side of the couch. He maneuvered himself so that his head was in Vigil’s lap, Virgil’s hands instinctively curling in Logan’s hair.
Snakes were cold-blooded creatures, but Janus could’ve sworn his heart melted a little bit.
Enter the twins.
Roman hurled himself into the room, skidding to a halt when he saw the four of them. “Aw,” he took a second to coo, before Remus was on him.
Logan looked up, sighed, and went back to his book.
Remus had his morningstar at Roman’s throat before he noticed the cuddle pile. His face softened from it’s normal wicked grin into something far less sinister. Apparently deciding on something, his eyes flicked to Roman.
“I don’t know what you’re planning, but don’t you dar-“ Roman started.
Roman shrieked as Remus tackle-hugged him. He shoved Remus off him, dusting off his arms. Janus hurriedly shushed him. Romans shot a glare at him, before whispering, quieter, “Get off of me! What even is that on you?”
Remus smirked at him. “You don’t want to know.” Under his breath, Roman muttered “I’m sure I don’t.” Remus grinned, and crowed, “Nope! And you’re my brother, you have to cuddle me.”
Roman said something that sounded suspiciously like “Asshole,” but concurred, flopping next to a sleeping Patton with Remus curling up like a cat next to him.
Janus hid a smile. He hadn’t had moments like these for a while. Moments when... he could pretend they were a family. He shook his head. They’d never be, they had too many differences.
But...
These moments had been happening a lot more often.
With that thought in mind, Janus smiled.

hey zara :") do you possibly have any somft headcanons you could share ? (for any of the sides, but you don't have to if you don't want to)
No problem but I only have remsleep and romile ones because I've been writing about it sooo
Remus is practically a human heater and so when he and Remy sleep together Remy clings onto him.
Remus is also very protective about the people he cares about so whenever Remy falls asleep in his arms he makes sure Remy is safe.
You saw earlier about Remy and Remus having a child right? Well both Remy does the you can't have this before/after to their daughter but Remus gets it for her anyway.
Also Patton totally spoil their daughter, and Patton is like omg my granddaughter is so cute, and I love her.
Remy loves Remus touching his hair and will melt if Remus touches it. Like they're cuddling and watching a movie , Remus puts his hand to Remy's hair and Remy just melt against Remus. (Remus uses this to tease Remy)
Remy and Remus steal eachothers clothes, even though they have the same size remuss always seem to be bigger.
So Remy sometimes in the morning is wearing an oversized shirt, he hugs Remus from behind and kisses his neck. Remus always smile when Remy does that
Roman does huge gestures for Emile whenever it's their anniversary, or birthday or if it's just a holiday and Emile loves it
For their first date they went on a picnic on top of hill and talked about how much they loved eachother and about the past.
They end up staying there till late at night so they can stargaze. They lie down on the blanket they brought and Emile puts his head on Romans shoulder and Roman is blushing bc why does my boyfriend look so cute
Emile and roman talk about Disney together and have movie dates where they watch Disney movies all night and cuddle. Emile always ends up on top of Roman on the couch while Roman wraps his arms protectively around Emile in his sleep. (because the twins are protective of their boyfriends)
Patton is a therapist in the moxiety parent au and is who inspired Emile to become one. When Emile was younger he always wanted to help people and because interested in Patton's job and asked pat some questions which Patton was happy to answer, because this 5 year old kid wants to be like me aww.
Okay that's all I have for now I'll probably write some more in the morning, hope you like it !

Heres a somft hc! Each an every side has an 'off' button, and by that i mean each side has a place where you can pat or interact w/ and will make them melt. For Pat its hugs, Lolo is his shoulders, Virgil and Remus is petting their hair, Dee is petting his scales/holding his hand, and Roman is holding his hand/cuddling him. Just some somft stuff. I hope your day gets better, be gentle with yourself okay? Stay safe and hydrated, Storm! Tomorrows a new day, so take it easy. Remember to breathe. ^^
Luka, you’re the freaking best. Thank you so much.
And that is just so freaking soft and I adore that. Like, I love the idea of Remus and Virgil just melting by Patton and Deceit gently petting their hair and it all being so soft!

if we are going to talk about cute fluff, here's some I like: Remus enjoys vanilla sex just as much as kinky stuff. Patton will spoil his s/o with their favourite take away as after care. Virgil prefers to give his Dom after care rather the him receiving it. Roman being a thicc BOI and having the best thigh (and butt) pillows. Dee owns a hot tub and will carry his s/o and knows how to give a massage and Logan secretly love the feeling of someone looking after him even though he like to be alone.
in addition: Ree likes vanilla stuff but is shy to ask but will jump at the chance when his partner suggests it, Pat is a worrier post-sex especially if he was rough, Virge is somft dom especially post-sex and loves a clingy lover so much (it makes him feel loved), Ro likes having his lover(s) lay on him bc warm, loved, yes, Dee loving the way his lover relaxes with him (in and out of the tub), Lo just being babie and the other(s) melting!
