"There’s really only three types of writing that we do in modern civilization. The first is the basic one we do everyday: writing notes on paper, texting to friends, writing reports for work, and all the other mundane things we write, conveying meaning and information to others or back to ourselves. The second is what we can call “sacred” writing, meaning that it’s how we attempt to convey something more than mere information or signal. This is a much rarer kind of writing, because the sacred is also a much rarer kind of thing. This kind of writing doesn’t just include poetry and “great” prose, but also the love note you write to your wife, the handwritten letter to a distant friend, or what a law clerk types out when you are crafting your final will. It’s writing with importance (from Latin im-portare, something you “carry in”), rather than a scrawled set of signals. The third bit is the newest sort, “content.” It’s what fills the space between a title and the end of the page, something to keep your attention moving in the direction the “content creator” would like it to move. It’s there to get you to click on something, or to click past it. You can see it best with recipe pages on the internet, paragraph after paragraph of writing you’re not even expected to read. It’s also all the “filler” articles in newspapers and the text on cheap shopping fliers, not actually meant to be read by anyone."

Fuck Repeater Books and Fuck Rhyd Wildermuth (again)
I fucking hate Repeater Books
Tumblr media
If you read that Substack article, you find that Rhyd begins with a diatribe about his bafflement at dating someone with neopronouns, and then he talks about right-wing fascists like Matt Walsh and LibsOfTikTok as basically documenting them as "excesses" of "the left".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are you seriously telling me that nobody at Repeater Books, a respected publisher of left-wing radical literature, bothered to ask Rhyd any questions about his comments about neopronouns or especially the way he talks about Matt Walsh or LibsOfTikTok? Is this what I'm supposed to understand is the case?
By the way, I just love being lectured about ideas that don't connect to the masses or so-called "everyday reality" by a guy who claims to be a Druid and somehow refers to himself as an Autonomist Marxist, who also moved to France to live in the Ardennes and is now almost literally physically disconnected from everyday American life!
Tumblr media
Also, note the way he talks about fiction, realism, reality, and "good fiction" or "coherent fiction", in the context of the fact that he hates neopronouns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I must say I have to appreciate the fact that he cites the concept of Jungian archetypes only a little later on, because at that point it grants me the suspicion that Jungian psychoanalysis, and its later developments in atheistic appreciations of religion and especially neopaganism, might have been mistakes. Makes me think of Austin Osman Spare's phrase, "Fraud and Junk", directed against Freud and Jung and perhaps by extension the whole modern tradition of psychoanalysis. Might want to think about that also when considering the "psychological" model of magic.
The Substack article ends in part with a description of Rhyd's new book as "A clear and engaging history of how left radicalism went wrong and how it can become what it must be again." I seriously wouldn't promote it as anything of the kind. And it just tells me if this text gains purchase to any sizeable extent of the contemporary "Left", then it will prove that the "Left" as it exists today is simply a joke, so hopelessly caught in discursive and intellectual games in pursuit of some correct and totalised anti-capitalist doctrine, and perfecting the discourse that might allow them to win power by so sufficiently critiquing capitalism, that they are willing to accept reactionary discourses of identity that are literally allied with right-wing fascism, even in ostensibly radical of spaces, and throw marginalised people under the bus for the sake of having a "serious conservation". Fuck all of that!
Oh and I suppose I'd best include a rundown of Rhyd Wildermuth's support for bigotry of many kinds:

Anti-monotheism
Multiple staff members fall into the trap of anti-monotheism. Aside from alienating members in and out of the community, anti-monotheism often leads to folkism -- more on this in a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Promoting known fascist content
Staff promote fascist academic Edward P. Butler. Note that there was an extremely public, community-wide reckoning of Butler's fascist sympathies in December 2021. This month (December 2022), a staff member recommended Butler's page on the Hindu fascist website that came into question in 2021. Hieros Elaionas is promoting fascists and their work a full calendar year after his exposure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RSS Feed has a blogger with folkish tendencies
The RSS feed features a blogger, Kaye Boesme, who has shared folkish opinions and retweeted Rhyd Wildermuth's article defending the above fascist Butler. Rhyd Wildermuth has very publicly defended fascists and publicly spewed transphobic rhetoric for at least a year. Boesme posted a screenshot from a folkist website and pinned it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This article from Wildermuth's Substack is very explicitly and specifically about the exposure of Butler's fascism (and Wildermuth's defense of it).

Hey there, just saw your reblogged post about Hieros Elaionas. I've been in that server for a few years and have nothing but positive things to say. They are kind, fair, and one of the most history and fact based polytheism servers I've ever been on. You're allowed to disagree with a philosophical position like monotheism in life, you're allowed to think polytheism doesn't make sense, none of that makes you "folkish". As for posting known fascist content, I have seen plenty of content removed by mods that leans that direction but people miss things.
Just wanted to give my two cents, if you're going to reblog a little slam post might as well post this too. Nothing's black and white, that's a great server and I don't think a Tumblr post will truly bother anyone there other then the hard working mods who are doing their best to create a safe place to discuss Hellenic Polytheism in depth.
Hope you have a good new year!
I don't think being anti-monotheist makes you folkish per se, but I do think it's a gateway to folkism, from my experience with more out-and-out folkists (in Heathenry, Hellenic paganism, Slavic paganism, etc.).
I appreciate your two cents, but I am not the poster of that post and cannot in good conscience endorse any server where moderators actively promote fascist content. That is never okay, considering how loud and public the stuff around Butler was, to the extent that he talked about it (and Rhyd Wildermuth, a literal transphobe who platformed a fascist, who is named in the post). I do not trust "they didn't know" at this point considering how big of a deal it was, and considering I've seen the mods on Twitter in pagan spaces. I'm sorry you're invested in this community, but there's no way they don't know.
By doing this, they are putting their members in danger -- either of interaction with fascists and folkists, or in danger of radicalization into these groups.

Slowly Starting To Happen | Weeknotes
I know I’ve spent the summer annoyed about the state of social media. But I’ve spent most of it largely off it. Mainly due to it being blocked. I’m not really reading or consuming it at all. I log in, post something, reply to DM’s and notifications and log out. The news is also blocked. What’s slowly starting to happen, as I spend more and more time in smaller communities instead. Is that I’m…

EMPIRES CRUMBLE 6: Egregores

What’s an Egregore? What’s an egregore got to do with America? And what really happened to the dude who made KONY2012? In the sixth episode Alley Valkyrie and Rhyd Wildermuth discuss how the ingredients of the ritual that manifested American make it impossible to change, and discuss how an egregoric understanding can inform resistance and magic against the State.

jsyk rhyd wildermuth is a transphobe now :-(
GODDAMMIT.
Ugggghhhhhh thanks for telling me
(transphobia talk under the cut)
I just went hunting for evidence and yeah, boy, those are some rancid takes. >.< Like, it took a hot minute of scrolling 'cause I didn't find any DIRECT posts that were like 'ew trans people are gross' in what I think of as the 'classic' transphobia, but then a little bit of looking and what I found was 'well ACTUALLY the transphobes do have a point, and the woke left is being so mean to them :(".
Which is. Y'know. Not better.
Rhys. Honey. Baby. "How are we going to destroy capitalism if there's all these pronouns :(" is not the epic pwn you think it is.

At what point do all the ideas humans have about what is just and righteous stop and life itself takes over? And when do we finally choose to nurture, shelter, and grow the life around us rather than destroy everything at hand for someone else’s imagining?

At what point do we just live?
