“I do think it’s a significant moment in opera history,” Thomas said, “but I’m saddened that it’s a significant moment. I’m sure there have been black men around [before me] that could have sung Otello. One black man in over 200 performances – I’m not sure that’s something to be proud of, or necessarily to applaud.”
Another important factor was the makeup of those working behind the stage, Thomas added. “We can’t have a world where every single company director is white, and very few of them are women. You’re never going to get a diverse perspective, because the people behind the scenes making decisions are not diverse.
“You hear people say, ‘black people don’t come to the opera’. But there’s never been a time in America that I’ve been on stage that there’s not been a lot of black people in the audience. And I’m sure that would be the same in London and anywhere else if you just put people on stage that were relatable.”

Is anybody else completely fucked up over the fact that even though Crozier sent Blanky outside after getting in that terrible argument where Crozier was definitely wrong, and Blanky ended up narrowly surviving the Tuunbaq, and the fact that he required an amputation because of this encounter is why he is doomed to die by gangrene, and yet, you can tell he's pretty much forgiven Crozier and still loves him more than anything? Blanky nearly killed his captain on a previous expedition and warned Crozier well before Crozier sent him outside that the same could happen to him if circumstances become dire enough. Crozier had no way of knowing the Tuunbaq would attack at that moment, but it still would have been a distinct possibility.
I think on some level Blanky knew that alcohol was enabling Crozier to be a terrible person, but he still seems pretty quick to let bygones be bygones. Though given the circumstances, division and conflict are the last thing they need. They're wise enough to know that.
What absolutely kills me about Blanky's ending, badass though it may be, is that Crozier knows full well that if it weren't for that night when they fought over banishing Silna and abandoning her (with Crozier definitely in the wrong), Blanky would probably have stood a solid chance of survival. If not for the gangrene, he'd be on the much healthier side of the crew, but he has a level of self awareness that a lot of the younger man don't possess. Just one more thing for Crozier to feel overwhelming guilt about. There's such a feeling of being lost that comes with the sturdiest and most capable of your men telling you he's going to die, and how he wants it to happen.
"At least love me enough to admit it" just breaks my heart. Blanky wants to be blithe and irreverent but he knows this is the worst possible time, he knows this will weigh on Crozier, as much as he wishes Crozier could be alright with it. They're at Fitzjames' funeral for god's sake. So Blanky softens the blow with a hug.
Edit: all of you guys, your tags are incredible and I love reading them
Sorry if this is incoherent sshsgdgd I fucking love these guys
