Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School is a popular YouTube series. Tucker Foley is a star student.
Barbara Gordon's Cram School posts free online courses for both coding and computer engineering. Think Crash Course in terms of entertainment, but college lecture in terms of depth. Hundreds of thousands of viewers flock to it— students who missed a class, people looking to add new skills to a resume, even simple hobbyists. It’s a project Barbara’s proud of.
Sometimes, when she wants to relax, she’ll even hop in the comments and spend an afternoon troubleshooting a viewer’s project with them.
User “Fryer-Tuck” has especially interesting ones. Barbara finds herself seeking out his comments, checking in on whatever this crazy kid is making next. An app for collecting GPS pings and assembling them on a map in real-time, an algorithm that connects geographic points to predict something’s movement taking a hundred other variables into account, simplified versions of incredibly complex homemade programs so they can run on incredibly limited CPU’s.
(Barbara wants to buy the kid a PC. It seems he’s got natural talent, but he keeps making reference to a PDA. Talk about 90’s! This guy’s hardware probably predates his birth.)
She chats with him more and more, switching to less public PM threads, and eventually, he opens up. His latest project, though, is not something Barbara has personal experience with.
FT: so if you found, hypothetically, a mysterious glowing substance that affects tech in weird and wacky ways that could totally have potential but might be vaguely sentient/otherworldly…. what would you do and how would you experiment with it. safely, of course. and hypothetically
BG: I’d make sure all my tests were in disposable devices and quarantined programs to keep it from infecting my important stuff. Dare I ask… how weird and wacky is it?
FT: uhhh. theoretically, a person composed of this substance once used it to enter a video game. like physical body, into the computer, onto the screen? moving around and talking and fighting enemies within the game?
FT: its been experimented with before, but not on any tech with a brain. just basic shields and blasters and stuff, its an energy source. also was put in a car once
FT: i wanna see how it affects software, yk? bc i already know it can. mess around and see how far i can push it
BG: […]
FT: … barbara?
BG: Sorry, thinking. Would you mind sharing more details? You said “blasters?”
Honestly. Kid genius with access to some truly wacky materials and even wackier weapons, she needs to start a file on him before he full sends to either hero or villain.
[OR: Tucker is a self-taught hacker, but if he were to credit a teacher, he'd name Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School! He's even caught the attention of Dr. Gordon herself. She's full of sage advice, and with how she preaches the value of a good VPN, he's sure she's not pro-government. Maybe she'll help him as he studies the many applications of ecto-tech!]

Career Advice
Hi everyone!!  This story was inspired by a news anchor that I saw on TV, and thought to myself “what would happen if Alya asked that woman for an internship and showed that woman the Ladyblog.” There wasn’t originally going to be Alya redemption, but I decided that the girl needed some love too. Warm-Fuzzies and please enjoy!!
Alya was practically vibrating in her chair as she sat in the reception area of TVi News. She had heard from Aurora and Mireille that there was a summer internship opening and that she should submit an application. She had spent an entire week working on her resume with her mom’s help, citing her blog as experience. Her mother had told her that she might want to double check all her stories before going in, but already knew that she’d be fine. After all, she was an awesome reporter.
There were four other people in the room with her, and she was definitely the youngest. Two of them looked like they were university age and the other two probably attended lycee. That meant that they likely had a bit more experience than she did, but Alya was confident that her blog would set her up for the win. Not only that, Lila had put in a good word for her with the higher ups of TVi News. All she had to do was nail the interview and the internship was hers!
It was about an hour and two interviews before her turn came. Holding her head high; she grabbed her tablet and portfolio, straightened her skirt, and walked in as smoothly as she could in her heels.
The person conducting the interview was Claudia Ramonte, a no-nonsense kind of woman that always seemed to be on a deadline. She preferred people always be on-point and despised people that wasted her time. She was a legend in the industry, she had been an investigative journalist for over 20 years before going into semi-retirement by helping run the company and hiring new journalists. It was said that she had an eye for who had talent and who was just playing journalist. And if you fell into the latter or made the mistake of insulting her craft, you could kiss any hopes of making it big in the industry goodbye. So as soon as Alya shut the door behind her, she put on her most professional smile and extended her hand to her.
“Mme. Ramonte, Alya Cesaire, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
She gave her a slight smile as she shook her hand. “When I saw that a kid in college was applying for the internship, I thought that you were either an idiot or you had a pair of steel balls. Show me which one it is.”
A little taken back but her forwardness, Alya’s hand shook slightly as she pulled her resume from the file and handed it to her. “As you can see, I’ve been running my blog, The Ladyblog, for close to a year and a half now.”
“Everyone and their mothers have blogs nowadays, Cesaire.” The woman scoffed as she tossed Alya’s resume onto her desk and turned to her computer, typing quickly. “Every candidate I’m interviewing today has at least two blogs, multiple news articles in their school newspapers, or videos from their college news or radio stations. What is it about your blog that makes you think that you are more qualified than any of them?”
Alya faltered for a second but wouldn’t be deterred, she was an awesome reporter and she would get this internship. “I’ve conducted multiple interviews with different celebrities; including Ladybug herself, other heroes of the Miraculous Team, the daughter of a diplomat who is also Ladybug’s best friend…”
“So have others, Cesaire.” She sounded bored, as she continued reading something on her computer screen.
Squaring her shoulders, Alya kept going. She refused to back down when she was so close to her internship. “I have also done extensive work on recording akuma battles and have compared my footage to other sites. None of them get as close or in depth as I do.”
“And why do you think that is, Mlle. Cesaire?” Her voice going cold
Alya blinked, not expecting the question. “Um… well-”
“Reporters and journalists are not to engage in dangerous situations that are considered life threatening. Whether someone is part of a staff or freelance, they are not to enter danger zones on their own, which you have apparently done numerous times. I will admit that when it comes to journalism, it is never without risks; but no story is worth your life.”
“But there’s no real danger, Ladybug always-”
“A terrorist is a terrorist, Cesaire.” The chill in the woman’s voice gained a hard edge. “And the attacks that have been done by the akumas have, on more than one occasion, shown the potential to be fatal. Should there be even a single time that Ladybug and Chat Noir not pull through, that could result in thousands of deaths. If you think that any credible news source would allow their people to do what you’ve been doing; then you’re more than an idiot, you’re a reckless idiot.”
Then she turned one of her computer screens towards Alya, which was queued up to the Ladyblog. “And from what I’ve seen from your blog in the two minutes you’ve been in my office; you are not only reckless, but mediocre in your work as a journalist. I have looked through multiple posts and have yet to see a single credible source mentioned. So tell me, how can you think that you are qualified to work here if you cannot follow the most basic rule of journalism and check your sources?”
“I can assure you, everything I post is completely true!”
“And I’m just supposed to take your word on that? Hardly.” She turned the screen back to herself, then started playing the first interview she had done with Lila. Mme. Ramonte played it for only 15 seconds, in which Lila claimed to be Ladybug’s best friend after she had saved her life, before pausing the video and looking at Alya. “If Lila Rossi, the daughter of a diplomat, had been saved by Ladybug, there would have been multiple articles and recordings of the incident. I just did a cursory search and the only link that came up connecting Rossi and Ladybug is your own blog.”
Alya was speechless. She wanted to say that Lila was telling the truth, but what reason would there be for Mme. Ramonte, who continued playing Lila’s interview, to lie? She stopped the video again a few seconds later, after the tale of saving Jagged Stone’s kitten from being run over by a plane on an airport runway. The look the legendary journalist gave her was that of total disgust and anger.
“Do I even need to list all the things wrong with
this story?” When Alya didn’t say anything, Mme. Ramonte went off on her, practically ranting. “Firstly, Jagged Stone has been quoted multiple times as being allergic to animal fur, and would not own a cat. Second, no one would allow a minor onto a airport runway, as it would be seen negligence and possibly as an act of terrorism. Even if she had saved some cat from being run over and Jagged had been grateful, no self respecting musician would write a song about a minor that was not their daughter, as doing so could have him labeled as a pedophile. You are very lucky that M. Stone has not seen this interview, because if he had, you would have been served with lawsuits for slander. So, I’ll ask again. Is there anything to keep me from saying that you are nothing more than a wannabe-journalist that isn’t fit to work at a news stand?”
She wasn’t even sure how to respond. Alya had been so sure that her blog was perfect, but after what Mme. Ramonte had said and how she was looking at her, she really did feel like an idiot for believing what Lila had said. Especially since she should have known better.
She now remembered when she flew to Spain with her parents when she was younger and how far away the landing strip was from the airport. There was no way Lila would have been able to see a kitten from that far away. Alya also remembered how she wanted to go outside and play, but her father told her that only authorized personnel were allowed outside at the airport. Then there was Marinette, the designer had mentioned how she couldn’t do certain designs for the rock star because he had fur allergies from when he was a kid.
Oh no, Marinette has been saying for months that Lila was a liar. Ever since she had seen Lila’s interview. And since she designs for Jagged Stone, she would know that Lila was nothing but a liar. She was also the one that got me my first exclusive with Ladybug, so she’d probably know that she was lying about that, too. And I had the nerve to tell her that she was just being jealous… I’m a terrible friend and an even worse journalist.
Looking back up at Mme. Ramonte, she was barely able to hold back tears as she shook her head. “No, Madame. There is no excuse for such shoddy journalism, it doesn’t even deserve to be called that. I apologize for wasting your time.”
The woman’s features softened slightly, but not by much. “You’re still very young and have a lot to learn about journalism, Cesaire. If I ever see you in my office again, I’ll expect more from you than any other candidate. That means looking out for your safety, knowing what is okay and not okay to publish, and checking your stories through multiple, reliable sources. I would also recommend killing your blog and starting new, the Ladyblog will become toxic to your career if it continues. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
Alya couldn’t help but stare at the woman across the desk from her. Despite not deserving it, Mme. Ramonte had given her very sage and constructive advice that just might save her career in the long run. If she killed her blog now, started a new one or two, and followed her advice; by the time she finished lycee, she might be able to use them as proper references for her future career.
“Thank you, Mme. Ramonte. I won’t forget this.”
“Don’t thank me yet, Cesaire,” she waved her hand dismissively. “I’m going to remember this and I will be telling other news sources about your blog as well, to make sure you never repeat these mistakes again. So, if you are really set on being a journalist, don’t just prove it to me, prove to everyone that you are better.”
“Still, thank you. Have a nice day, Mme. Ramonte.” Alya stood from her chair but paused before she turned to walk away. “So you know, I think I’ll be doing one final post on the Ladyblog, to admit my mistakes and all the things I reported incorrectly on my blog, along with the sources to back it up. Sort of a final expose to rid myself of the bad energy from my blog, so I’ll be able to move forward.”
The woman gave a nod of approval. Before waving her out of the office.
Alya kept her head high the entire way out of the building while doing her best to remain calm, or else risk attracting an akuma. As a bit of a cleanser, she sent a text to Marinette.
To FashionGurl: You were right about Lila. I’m so sorry for not listening to you. Can we talk on Monday?
A few minutes later, she got a text back.
To FoxyJournalist: You can come by today if you want to talk.
To FashionGurl: Sorry, I’m going to be busy. I have a new story to write about that liar, one that will have multiple sources, showing everyone exactly the kind of person she is.
To FoxyJournalist: Can’t wait to read it!!
~oOo~
What followed for Alya was a very long weekend writing out every story/lie that Lila had ever told her and the class, research into Lila’s old schools, staking herself out in front of the Italian Embassy until Ambassador Rossi came out so she could introduce herself, and then a long conversation at a cafe with the very angry and distraught mother. There were a lot of questions, show-and-tell with the videos on Alya’s blog and news reports from Lila’s old schools, and then the recommendation that she go to speak with M. Damocles and Mme. Bustier.
Monday morning saw Alya going into the bakery before school, telling Tom and Sabine the truth about Lila, and then grovelling at Marinette’s feet for being such a terrible friend. One thing she did not hesitate to show the Dupain-Chengs were the records and news reports she’d found pertaining to Lila’s old schools. Tracking Lila’s social media, Alya had found three schools and discovered the kind of mayhem the girl left behind.
One school had a perfect student named Gaia, much like Marinette, bullied until she was expelled. Another school showed another popular girl named Alessia had “fallen” down a flight of stairs and broken both of her legs, a few ribs, and one of her arms. Even though there were multiple eyewitness reports that Lila had pushed her, the Italian girl moved before she could be brought up on charges. The report from the most recent school made all of them sick. A girl named Ludovica had been stalked, harassed, and bullied over social media beginning the day Lila joined the school until the day the girl committed suicide. A quick backtrace on the account showed that it had been set up by Lila Rossi.
It was quickly decided that Sabine would be going to the school to have a word with the principal and teacher. Alya gave them a thumb drive with a copy of all the information she had found, she had multiple copies, so that if they decided to pursue legal actions, they had evidence to back it up.
At school, Alya went to class while Sabine took Marinette M. Damocles' office to speak with him and Mme. Bustier, since the woman was decidedly absent from the room. She had barely sat down when Lila entered the classroom, spouting off some story about meeting Ryan Reynolds over the weekend. Alya barely suppressed her snide grimace before hiding it with a smile.
“Really, Lila? That’s amazing! Did you get any pictures? I would love to post them on my blog?”
Now that she was watching, she saw the girl flinch when asked for actual evidence before putting on a sugary sweet smile. “I didn’t get a chance, my phone died.”
“Oh that’s annoying. Where did you see him?” She asked, pulling up the movie star’s Twitter account. “Because you were here in Paris over the weekend but according to his social media, he was visiting his home town in Canada this week.”
Alya definitely saw the girl scowl that time. “Oh, he just said that so he could come here without anyone knowing. He’s researching a role here in Paris and I was showing him around until my mom called me home.”
“Didn’t you just say that your phone was dead?” That got the classes’ attention, as they had just heard the girl say that was the reason she hadn’t taken any pictures. Lila was about to spout some new excuse; but Alya, who was now channelling her inner Mme. Ramonte, raised a hand to cut her off.
“Don’t even bother coming up with another lie. I know you’re full of crap and it spills out of your mouth with every word you say. And before you try to accuse me of lying, taking Marinette’s side, or bullying you; I think you should know that I spent the majority of the weekend looking into everything you’ve told us.”
The entire class watched the Italian girl’s olive skin turn a sickly white. But Alya wasn’t finished, this girl had been attempting to do the same to Marinette that she had done to Gaia, Alessia, and Ludovica. And as her BFF, she was not going to stand aside and let that happen. “I have piles of evidence that you were never in Achu and have never met Prince Ali, you were just playing hookie. I’ve got evidence that you are perfectly healthy and have never suffered from any of the diseases or ailments that you’ve claimed to have since returning to school. I’ve also got evidence that you have never met any of the celebrities that you claim to know. That includes Ladybug.”
Not so surprising, Lila attempted to turn everyone against Alya by turning on the tears. “That’s not true! I would never lie about all of that. You’re just saying that because you’re mad at me for not getting the internship!”
When the class looked back at Alya, they were surprised to see her grinning like a fox. “Did I forget to mention exactly how I know you weren’t in Achu? Or how I know you're perfectly healthy and don’t know any of those celebrities you’ve claimed to be close to?”
She paused, mostly for effect before going in for the killing blow. “Your mom and I had a very in depth conversation yesterday when I ran into her outside the embassy. She wasn’t happy about your interviews on the Ladyblog, and she was confused as to why you were claiming to be Ladybug’s BFF when you’ve been telling her for months that she and Chat Noir were a couple of lazy, incompetent, and downright terrible heros; which was why the school was closed.”
If it were possible Lila paled even more before turning to run out the door. The door swung open just as she was reaching for the handle, and was met with an upset Mme. Bustier. “You are needed in the Principal's Office, young lady.” To the surprise of everyone there, Lila attempted to shove her way past their teacher. But the woman was faster and grabbed the girl by the arm in a firm grip before escorting her out of the room.
When the first bell rang a few minutes later, M. Harpele came in to act as the substitute until Mme. Bustier was finished with her meeting.
Marinette returned to class before their teacher did, smiling bright as the sun and visibly more relaxed than anyone had seen her in weeks. She sat down beside Alya and gave her a tight hug while whispering thank you” over and over.
“I take it things went well for you instead of Lila?” Alya grinned.
Marinette giggled. “She tried convincing her mom that all of us were akumatized and were trying to ruin her life, but she wasn’t buying it. Especially when M. Damocles showed Mme. Rossi her school records. Mom demanded that Lila give a formal apology and confess everything to the class, or she would get the Board of Governors involved. When Mme. Rossi found out that Lila tried to get me expelled, she lost it and started talking about a catholic reformatory school in Italy. Lila looked like she was going to be sick when she heard that.”
“It’s not perfect, but it’s what she deserves.” Alya shrugged before looking Marinette in the eye again. “I’m really sorry, girl. You’re my BFF, I should have listened to you when you told me Lila was a liar.”
“No, I don’t expect you to listen to me every time. I just wanted you to check things out and make sure that you weren’t being taken advantage of.” Then her brow creased. “I’m curious, what brought all this on?”
“Let’s just say that I just got some much needed career advice.”

7 Reasons Why I Quit
(only for a little bit)
It has, alas, been another few weeks since I posted. I have an excuse for my unpunctuality: I've been spinning non-stop like a top. The conclusion of the last Zoomester and the start of summer are to blame. I have seven partners in crime.
Culprit 1: Puppetry Workshop
Towards the end of the year, DTI (Design Thinking Initiative), in collaboration with the Theatre Shop, hosted an in-person puppetry workshop where a small number of people could participate per covid protocols. In-person events were few and far between this semester, so of course I rushed to sign up. The workshop ran for about 2 hours on three consecutive Mondays. We met in the theatre shop inside Mendenhall Center for Performing Arts.
Tumblr media
The first day we made shadow puppets (and mine was a bee); the second day we made hand puppets (mine was a ... cyclop ghost king?); the third day we made marionette or string puppets (I attempted to make a teru teru bōzu, but everyone thought it a ghost). I had a lot of fun trying different fabrics, re-learning how to use a bandsaw, and magically joining things together with the help of a hot glue gun. (Side note: Polymer chemistry is the magician behind the scene, and I will be learning more about the science of hot glue guns in the polymer class I am taking next semester!) The workshop was surprisingly not as popular as I anticipated, maybe because people were busy as the semester came to a close. The good news is that DTI will be running the workshop again in the fall so more people will get to participate.
Tumblr media
(Is she a ghost or teru teru bōzu?)
Culprit 2: Spring Piano Recital
I did not expect to attend a live concert this semester, but I was invited to the spring piano recital as a "special guest." It is a habit I developed while working as a concert crew at Sage, to sit outside the Sweeney Concert Hall and listen to the rehearsals after I finished setting up the stage. That day I was going to do homework outside the concert hall while waiting for my performing friend to finish. The piano instructor spotted me and asked me if I wanted to join. Disbelieving in my good luck, I accepted the invite. About ten students were scattered in the almost empty concert that felt sad and lonesome, but soon music filled the air. I thoroughly enjoyed every performance. Lots of Chopin were played, but my favorite one is Rhapsody in Blue which just entered the public domain this year. All pieces are about or more than a century old, which is not a surprise, but refreshingly, there is a piece by a female composer, Amy Beach, whose granduncle co-founded Bates College. You can find the full program here.
Tumblr media
Culprit 3: End of Classes
The end of classes was epitomized by professor-resembling pixels on our computer screens bidding us goodbye. Usually professors would plan something fun for the last day of classes, virtually as well.
I remember last semester my Multivariable Calculus professor changed his virtual background to a wall of donuts, explaining that during the pre-pandemic times he used to bring a box of donuts for students on the last day. This semester in Mathematical Methods for Physicists and Engineers, we explored the applications of Fourier Transform by looking at the velocity of a star and detecting the number of planets around it. Our last Circuit Theory lab was in person, where we got to listen to a song/piece of our own choice through the low pass filter and the high pass filter pictured below. The professor handed out prizes (cool items she accumulated in conferences) to students to reward them for their participation in the pre-class trivia games. I received a mini glow moon. In addition, our circuits professor left out end-of-class fun packs with origami papers and stickers outside her office. Our last Organic Chemistry lab was also in-person, where each lab group presented their experiments and findings (through a projector rather than Zoom screen share!) My presentation group decided to dress up for this special occasion after a long year of virtual school. Lastly, for Organic Chemistry, we played organic chemistry jeopardy in our last lecture.
Tumblr media
With all the professors wishing you a happy summer, you start daydreaming about the sunny beach and breezy wind. Oh wait, you still have final exams to take. All in three days!
Culprit 4: Final Examinations
This semester we had a three-day final exam study period (or reading period) when professors are not allowed to assign any homework or set deadlines. Right after the reading period is our final exams. Smith is known for its flexibility when it comes to exams thanks to its Honor Code system. Many exams are self-scheduled. Some are open-notes, and some are untimed. In a normal year, students go to Seelye Hall to print out and take the exams when they feel prepared.
For the classes I am taking this semester, I had three hours to take my Math Methods final, a whole day to take the Circuits Theory final, and the entire finals period to take my Organic Chemistry I final. Besides the exams, I had several other writing assignments to turn in. I was very fatigued at the end of the semester, so even though I only had three exams, I struggled to muster up mental energy to study. To make things worse, I got my second Pfizer shot during the reading period and had a pretty bad reaction. As a result, I asked the class dean to give me an extension on an exam, which was generously granted, and I was gratefully less overwhelmed.
Tumblr media
Culprit 5: SmithCycle
The finals are now over, but my vacation didn't start yet. I am staying on campus for a few extra weeks to work for SmithCycle. SmithCycle is a program that collects, sorts and redistributes gently used dorm items students donate in the move-out process at the end of each school year. It gives purpose to items of reusable value and creates a more sustainable campus. In the past week, we have collected hundreds of bags (no exaggerations!) of items. Besides clothes, books, school and dorm supplies, some of the unexpected items include coffee makers, brand new water filters, and a monitor. One of my coworkers commented that first-years shouldn't have to shop clothes hangers again while they were going through three boxes of donated hangers.
The winter clothes we collected are going to the International Students and Scholars Office. They have an event called Winter Clothes Closet every fall where international students "shop" for free to help them get accustomed to the New England weather. School supplies will be moved into the Common Goods Resources Center which CEEDS hopes to launch in Fall 2021 (very exciting!). I cannot plug SmithCycle enough. If you are an incoming first-year, visit the Common Goods Resources center before you head to Target!
Tumblr media
I have always been interested in sustainability and renewable energy and want to get more involved. When I saw the SmithCycle worker position posted on Workday, I immediately applied. Every SmithCycle worker's job varies. I am mainly responsible for washing and drying the linens and blankets. When waiting for the washer and dryer, I help with unloading the van that circulates between houses to pick up bags of donations. I also help with sorting. Pictured below is the inside of Scott Gym where all the items are currently stored.
Tumblr media
Culprit 7: Summer Housing
As college transitions into summer, students who are staying on campus for some part of the summer had to move out of their spring housing assignment into their summer housing. I moved from Chapin, the house in central campus, to Capen, which is on the periphery of Smith. I know Chapin and Capen sound alike, but they are very different houses location-wise and personality-wise! To make up for its distance to the academic buildings, Capen House has its own garden, Capen Garden. The garden a gorgeous place many current Smithies are missing out on. There is a mini fountain, hedges, a garden temple, a plant arch, and a bizarre owl statue. Look at the last picture of the garden in this blog, and you will agree with me that the Paradise Pond is overrated.
Tumblr media
Built in 1825 and acquired by Smith in 1921, Capen House is named after Bessie Capen, the second woman to be admitted to MIT. She taught chemistry at Smith College. Fun fact: Bessie Capen was once the associate principal of the Mary A. Burnham School for Girls, now Stoneleigh-Burham School; I went there for horseback riding lessons during my first year at Smith. Small world, right?
Case Closed
Thanks for reading this long-ish explanation. I hope my tardiness in delivering this post may be justified by the causes above. To compensate, I will write about my other summer plans and updates in the next few weeks. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, enjoy your summer!

in which the monastery almost burns down again
....and it is, technically, Lloyd’s fault this time.
This is absolute unforgiving fluff, because I was in the mood and every time I try to write this family being functional it spirals out of control. But also I love Lloyd and he deserves happiness, so here’s a very quickly written birthday fic that I’m not entirely sure I finished but I have two hours left to post ahhhHHH
(Takes place just after the Final Battle, and I’m assuming that an entire year hasn’t passed so they’ve never actually ran into Lloyd’s birthday until now.)
Lloyd would’ve gotten away with it, too, if Cole hadn’t decided to insist on flu shots that year.
“Lloyd, it’ll take five minutes.”
“Yeah, five minutes for you to schedule an appointment, which I don’t need.”
Cole eyes him skeptically. “So you’re saying you don’t remember how sick you got last winter.”
Lloyd grimaces. “That was…different.”
“No, that was the flu,” Cole sighs. “Look, we’re all getting shots, but it’ll be a lot more trouble if you don’t fill out your medical applications so we can get coverage.” He bites his lip, glaring at the computer screen. Zane’s alone had taken him the better part of the morning, and Zane had been cooperative.
Lloyd remains stubborn. “Sorry, I think I hear Sensei calling me—“
“We both know he’s out right now, Lloyd.”
Lloyd grumbles something inaudible.
“Please, just sit down with me for five minutes?” Cole tries a different, probably-mean-but-he’s-at-the-end-of-his-rope-here, tactic. “I mean, now that you’re not so little, I thought you’d be up for it.”
Lloyd makes a face, his expression working. The transition from shooting up to a teenager in the span of a minute has been…something, but Lloyd’s been handling the maturity aspect rather well, if only out of sheer stubbornness (and the general weight of the world). He finally deflates, pulling himself atop the table so he can stare down imperiously at Cole.
“Fine. But I make no promises about shots.”
Cole meets his gaze head-on. “If you try and hide in the air vents instead of going again, I’m going let Zane have full-reign over desserts for the next month.”
“You wouldn’t,” Lloyd hisses at him, scandalized. “You know Zane doesn’t believe in dessert! He’ll just give us fruit.” Lloyd’s nose crinkles in distaste, and Cole hides a grin.
“Fruit isn’t all that bad, you know.”
“Says the cake-hog.”
“I told you, that was Jay, and it was my cake anyways.”
“Sounds like a bunch’a lies, to me—“
He finally gets Lloyd’s application pulled up, and cuts the argument he definitely would have won short.
They’re getting to these flu shot appointments no matter what it takes, because the Final Battle was enough trouble on its own, and no one in this family is going to fall prey a crippling illness and ruin the rest of the year they have left, if Cole can help it.
Despite his initial stubbornness, Lloyd is at least more cooperative than Kai was. Cole manages to get his height — geez he’s short — his weight — maybe they should be increasing his desserts, actually — and then spends a good fifteen minutes arguing over his eye color before they get stuck on the allergies section, then skip a good few sections until they’re close to the end of the application.
“Birthday,” Cole sighs, rubbing his temples.
“September twenty-second,” Lloyd says, through a mouth of popcorn — a compromise, since it is technically junk food, but also healthy enough to—
Wait. Cole frowns, then quickly checks the date on the little calendar icon.
Today is September twenty-fourth.
“Lloyd,” Cole says slowly, a creeping sort of dread making its way up his spine. “Repeat that?”
“September twenty-second,” Lloyd echoes, a bit slower this time.
Cole stares at him. “Like September twenty-second…as in two days ago?”
“Yeah,” Lloyd nods, throwing a kernel of popcorn in the air and trying to catch it in his mouth. He pouts as it misses, landing on the floor instead. Cole doesn’t even lecture him — he’s too busy having a mini-crisis.
“Your birthday was two days ago.”
“Yeah?” Lloyd’s beginning to look annoyed. “That’s what I said. I can write it down for you, if you want.”
“No, that’s—“ Cole blinks rapidly, running a hand over his face. “Wha— why didn’t you say something?”
“Why would I?” Lloyd frowns.
Cole…does not entirely understand what’s going on here.
“Why— because it’s your birthday!” he finally exclaims. Darn it, he’s never missed a birthday before — he even managed to pin down Zane’s, who had claimed he didn’t have a birthday. Now his record is broken, and worse, it’s broken on his baby brother. “We would’ve — we would’ve celebrated, why didn’t you say something?”
Lloyd’s shoulders hunch, and he looks a little on the defensive side now. “I mean, it’s not that big a deal,” he says. “I’m just a little older. S’nothing to get worked up over.”
“Not that big a deal — it’s your birthday!”
“I know that, Cole.”
“I mean, didn’t you ever do anything back—“
He pauses. Oh.
Oh no. Cole is starting to understand what’s going on here, and he doesn’t like it.
Lloyd gives him a strained, painful-looking smile, that’s honestly a terrible excuse of a smile in the first place.
“Darkley’s isn’t really big on birthdays,” he says, with a brittle kind of laughter Cole isn’t used to hearing from his youngest brother. “They didn’t really, uh, care. At all. Kinda just made you a target for the day, ‘cause you were older now, so you could take more hits, you know?”
Cole nods on blank instinct, like that’s totally normal and makes perfect sense. On second thought, why hadn’t they punted any of those kids off the roof of Darkley’s when they’d had the chance? Scratch that, why hadn’t they hunted the teachers down and punted them off?
“So yeah, not a big deal,” Lloyd shrugs. He laughs, that false kind of one again. “I mean, it’s not like I even know how old I am anyways, right? Tomorrow’s Tea, and stuff.” He slides off the table, giving Cole a grin. “Guess that means I can’t fill out the rest of the application, oops! Bummer.”
Lloyd makes a break for the hallway, slipping briefly in his socks before he grabs the doorframe, glaring at Cole. “And you better not put Zane on dessert.”
Then he’s escaped down the hall, leaving Cole to stare after him with his slowly-combusting mess of emotions.
Oooh boy, Kai’s gonna love this.
*********
Kai, as expected, takes it the worst.
“We missed Lloyd’s birthday?” he croaks, looking like he’s moments from tearing up.
“It was two days ago,” Cole says, shaking his head. “Two days. We did clean-up that day! We spent his entire birthday hauling debris around the city.”
“Oh, no,” Nya moans into her hands, where she’s yet to look up from since Cole broke the news.
“I can’t believe I missed this,” Zane says, looking appalled with himself. “I am normally better with dates…”
“Why didn’t he say anything?’ Jay exclaims. “Poor kid, he’s gotta hate us—“
“No, see, he wasn’t even upset,” Cole throws his hands in the air. “Guys, I don’t think he even knows how to celebrate his birthday. He got all tight-lipped about it when I asked, then said that Darkley’s ‘wasn’t big on birthdays’ and something about getting hit, and are we sure we didn’t save the names of his old teachers somewhere?"
Ah, maybe he shouldn’t have said that last part. Kai might actually be crying now.
“Those heartless punks,” Nya’s hissing, her head raised so her eyes can spear everyone with what’s practically lasers burning in them. “Those malicious jerks. What kind of stupid school—“
“I mean, Kai was a human piñata once, so we know it’s legal,” Jay says, his eyes sparking. “That’d be pretty festive.”
“Wha— no, Jay, no one’s getting used as a human piñata.”
“Tell that to Nya,” Jay sulks. Cole finally picks up on the conversation happening beside him, with no small amount of alarm.
“Nya, we are not giving Lloyd the teeth of his old school teachers as a birthday present.”
“I didn’t say we’d be giving them to Lloyd, just that I’d kick them out—“
“No one’s messing with anyone else’s teeth!” Cole yelps, waving his arms between them. He suddenly frowns. “Hold on, maybe I should schedule dentist appointments while I’m at it—“
“No!” comes the united chorus. To Cole’s disappointment, Zane’s voice has joined in as well.
“Lloyd’s birthday is what’s important right now, Cole,” Kai glares.
Well….point. But he’s still gonna put ‘make dentist appointments’ on a sticky note later.
“Okay, so we missed Lloyd’s birthday,” Nya says, determinedly. “That’s bad. What do we do?”
“We’re a pretty half-rate family,” Jay muses.
“Obviously, we made a mistake,” Zane says, sagely. “So we must correct it, and throw him a birthday party to show that we are not, in fact, a half-rate family.”
Cole points at Zane. “Now there’s a better plan.”
“So like, the best birthday party ever, to make up for all the ones he’s missed,” Kai nods.
“Yeah, we’re making up for what, how many years worth of missed birthdays?” Cole asks.
They all fall silent, staring at the table pensively.
“Do we count the Tomorrow’s Tea for missed years or not,” Jay whispers.
Kai kicks him in the leg. “Of course we do!” he says, hotly. “That whole thing sucked, he’d better get something out of it.”
“Also, I don’t think Lloyd would be thrilled if we threw him a ten year-old birthday party,” Nya mutters.
“Ten years?” Cole frowns. “Is that right?”
“Yeah,” Nya says, just as Kai goes “No, it’s nine.”
They both stare at each other.
“Uh oh,” Jay murmurs.
“So clearly, we will not be putting a number on this cake,” Zane rubs his head wearily.
“No, no, we can figure this out,” Cole insists. “Maybe like, his parents will know?”
The others nod, just as Nya’s head snaps up.
“Woah woah wait, hold on a second.” Her eyebrows are furrowed, the growing look on her face thunderous. “Lloyd was with us the whole day, so we know for a fact that no one remembered his birthday.”
“Yeah, and?”
Nya looks at Kai again, who blinks rapidly, before a look that promises trouble crosses his face.
“Maybe we should bring his parents in on this conversation.”
*********
To Garmadon’s credit, he looks even more horrified than Kai did.
“No,” he says, frantically. “Lloyd’s birthday isn’t — no, it’s September already?”
To also be fair, Garmadon was very recently exorcised of some very nasty, mind-affecting snake venom. He’s kind of been through a lot.
“Yeah, it is,” Nya says hotly, clearly not in the mindset of being fair. “And Lloyd’s birthday was two days ago!”
Misako’s head is buried in her hands on the table. “Two months,” she’s lamenting in despair. “I promised Lloyd I’d be better and I made it two months.”
Kai is still arguing with Sensei Wu, while Jay is either attempting to defuse the situation or convince Wu that an exploding cake is a good idea.
“—lost track of time, after the Final Battle, you must understand how chaotic it’s been—“
“Then why didn’t you write it on your calendar or something?!”
“I don’t have a calendar.”
“Well there’s your first problem—“
“Which could be solved! By cake!”
It’s not until Zane shoots him a desperate look that Cole decides to finally speak up.
“Look, guys — hey, look,” he shoulders his way to the middle of the tense huddle they’ve managed to make in the monastery’s sitting room. He takes a minute to thank that Lloyd’s on patrol right now, instead of a room over where he could very easily hear his entire family arguing over who’s fault it is that they forgot his birthday.
“Look,” Cole sighs, once he’s (miraculously) managed to get everyone quiet for a minute. “That’s not the important thing now, okay? The important — lip it, Kai — the important thing, is that we’re going to fix it. Got it?”
While Garmadon and Wu look a little affronted at being ordered around in such a way, the others nod in agreement, and that’s all Cole needs. He’s had enough of the First Spinjitzu Master’s family drama in the past few months, Wu and Garmadon can suck it up.
“Lloyd gets back from patrol in an hour,” he continues. “So if we’re gonna throw a party by this evening, we need to distract him.”
“This evening?” Wu muses. “Isn’t that a bit soon?”
He realizes his mistake a second too late. He’s immediately set upon by four viciously gleeful students chorusing: “Never put off ’til tomorrow what you can do today, Sensei—“
“Alright, alright,” Wu ducks his head.  He mutters under his breath, “I didn’t think I’d be paying for that one so soon.”
“Anyways, distraction,” Cole repeats. “We need someone to make sure he stays out of here the rest of the day, who’s game?”
Kai immediately volunteers, followed shortly by Jay. Cole eyes them shrewdly.
“Let me rephrase,” he says. “Who can keep it a secret long enough for us to surprise him?”
Kai shifts guiltily, and Jay bites his lip.
“I mean, I probably could…” he says, slowly. Cole does not have confidence in that statement. He looks to Zane.
“You’re the only one I trust,” he says, solemnly.
Zane shakes his head with a wry smile. “I’ll bring him back by dinner, will that give you enough time?”
“Totally,” Cole nods, just as Jay says, “Not even close.”
In hindsight, Jay is probably more correct, but Cole will eat dirt before he admits that.
*********
With even further hindsight, Jay is really correct.
“We need presents,” Kai is saying, as he struggles to drag in the truly ridiculous amount of streamers he and Jay purchased. “What can we get for Lloyd that’s acceptable in the next two hours?”
Garmadon purses his lips, glancing briefly at Wu. “Our father’s tradition was normally just a larger sword.”
“Like Lloyd even needs a sword now,” Jay reminds them.
“Why don’t we play it safe, and get him candy, or something?”
“What, you want to encourage his sweet tooth?”
“I don’t hear you coming up with any ideas.”
“What about a mech?”
“That didn’t end so great the last time, remember?”
“There’s always those cursed scrolls, I suppose,” Garmadon muses.
Cole glares at him. “Stop suggesting death weapons!”
“They aren’t all death weapons,” Garmadon huffs. “I’m simply saying, he might appreciate the finer weaponry in life—“
Misako, at least, suggests something nice and safe, like comics. Nya likes that idea, though she also wants to find a complete signed edition of the Starfarer movies, which leads to a heated debate with Jay because “they aren’t movies, Nya, it’s a TV show, and you can’t just buy signed editions, they’re priceless—“
Cole, who has better things to do than watch Jay shoot his romantic life in the foot for the day, wearily takes the end of a streamer from Sensei and helps him put it up. Kai is on the other side, still pushing for a pet.
“What about a cat, though,” he pleads. “Cats are quiet, and they don’t need as much attention.”
“Lloyd would give it much attention,” Cole mutters.
“Exactly,” Sensei Wu sighs. “The monastery is not a place meant for pets. And besides, after his victory against the Overlord, Lloyd will be on the road more often than not. It simply isn’t the time and place for a pet. He has a dragon, I am sure he’ll be fine.”
Kai looks mildly devastated by this answer, and Cole makes a mental note to make sure Kai doesn’t sneak any animals in any time soon. This can come after the mental note that he can’t forget about those flu shots, which comes after the other mental note that they really need to get started on a cake if they’re gonna have one in time.
“He likes that kind with the sprinkles baked in,” Nya informs him.
“Funfetti,” Cole nods. Good tastes in cakes, a family trait. Nya, who clearly does not appreciate good cakes, simply shrugs.
“Sure. With lots of frosting, of course.”
“Great, that shouldn’t be too hard,” Cole decides. “And Jay grabbed candles while he was getting streamers, so we should be set. Let’s get on making that.”
“Oh no,” Kai suddenly groans. They all look at him. “Guys, we sent Zane to distract Lloyd.”
Jay frowns. “So?”
Kai spears him with a look. “That means Zane can’t make the cake.”
An icy silence of horror drops over the room. They all look to each other.
“I’m out,” Cole says.
“I’m still relearning what I can even eat as a human,” Garmadon moans.
“I’m…adequate, at best,” Misako grimaces.
“My cooking ends with coffee,” Nya says, despairingly.
“I can make ramen?” Jay offers.
Kai stares at them. He looks incredulously at Sensei Wu, who shrugs.
“I can make tea cake.”
Kai looks like he’s resisting the urge to roll his eyes back into his head. “Okay, I’m making the cake, since all you are disasters.” He shakes his head, grumbling to himself. “—have you even survived this long, Zane and I pulling all the weight—“
Cole thinks that last statement is rather unwarranted, but Kai can actually reliably make food without burning the house down — ironically enough — so he’s not about to pick an argument with their best bet.
So he focuses on settling another argument, instead.
“How many candles are we putting on this cake, by the way?”
He’s sorely disappointed.
“The Tomorrow’s Tea can be a bit unpredictable,” Sensei Wu says, his eyes guilty. “I…cannot exactly say how many years it would add.”
Cole resists the urge to roll his own eyes into the back of his head. “Thanks for nothing,” he mutters.
“Okay, well we can at least find out how old he was, and work from there,” Nya says, resolutely. She turns on Garmadon. “How old would Lloyd be this year, if he hadn’t aged?”
“Um,” Garmadon says. His expression contorts, eyes going distant. “He was born in that one fall that the coast got hit by a hurricane, so that would make him, ah…let’s see…”
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“I was overcome by the vicious blood of the Great Devourer soon after, years blur together when you’re immortal!”
Misako rolls her eyes, turning to Nya. “I remember, at least. This year he’d be—“
Cole misses the end of her statement as another vicious round of arguing breaks out behind him between Jay and Kai, who are supposed to be watching the cake in the oven.
“I’m his older brother, I’m bringing the cake out.”
“What, like the rest of us aren’t?”
“No, but I’m like — Lloyd’s supreme older brother, so clearly—“
“Oh please, you lost him to the Serpentine in an arcade—“
“Hey, that’s sensitive! And I rescued him afterwards!”
“Yeah, after you had an existential crisis—“
“For the last time, today is not about you,” Cole hisses, wedging between them and pushing them apart. “Cut that out, or I’m gonna think the Tomorrow’s Tea aged you down.”
Jay and Kai glare at each other, but they comply. Cole sighs.
“Look, Kai, you’re the overbearing brother and that’s valid, but I need you front and center when Lloyd walks in,” he says, as he takes the cake out of the oven.
“Why?” Kai frowns, as he begins frosting the cake, seemingly heedless of how hot it still is. Cole watches him in despair for a minute before answering.
“Because you’re the person he’s least likely to blast on instinct if the surprise goes wrong.”
They both make a face, but then shrug. “Point, I guess,” Jay says, tossing the box of candles from hand to hand. “Better him than me.” He glances at Cole. “So, how many candles we sticking on?”
Cole glances back to the now-decorated sitting room, where Wu, Garmadon and Misako are still locked in argument with Nya over…who knows what now.
You know what, he thinks. It’s not worth it.
“Just…stick a bunch on,” he sighs. “They can be, like, a symbol of light, or something.”
“If you say so,” Jay snorts. He proceeds to cram as many candles as he can on the cake, following Kai’s path as he frosts it. Cole watches in trepidation.
“Hey guys, Zane says he’s running out of ideas, so we’d better hurry it — woah, that’s a lot of candles.”
Nya blinks at the cake, frowning at Jay. “You know that’s gonna be a lot of fire when they’re lit, right?”
“And is there a problem with that?” Kai sniffs.
“Nah, don’t worry about it,” Jay waves her off before she can retort. “They’re trick candles, you know? Like the sparky ones that keep relighting? It’s gonna be great, haha.”
Great does not seem to be a word Nya agrees with, if the expression on her face is any giveaway, but they are running out of time and Cole can’t deal with this right now.
“Great, just finish it up, okay?” he says, hastily. “Zane and Lloyd are gonna be back any minute, and we still don’t have a—“
The unmistakeable roar of the Ultradragon comes from just outside the monastery, followed by the loud flapping of wings. Everyone goes still enough that if they were in a sitcom, this would be hilarious, but they’re not, and Cole’s going to lose his mind.
“Light the candles,” he hisses at Kai and Jay, who have frozen in horror. “Light the candles and turn the lights off, go go go!”
*********
Lloyd does not end up blasting Kai in the face with a beam of golden power, which is mildly disappointing.
But he does jump a good three feet in the air, his eyes going the size of dinner plates as he makes a sound like a surprised cat, and Cole thinks that’s just as satisfying.
Not as satisfying as the megawatt smile he wears while turning red as Kai’s gi as they all sing off-key to him, of course, but pretty close.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t delay longer,” Zane apologizes to Cole, as they both watch Lloyd dance around the cake, trying to get the candles to extinguish while Jay and Kai laugh mercilessly at him. “He was beginning to grow suspicious, and I probably checked my phone too many times.”
“You did great,” Cole assures him. A bright flash goes off around the room as Misako snaps a picture, capturing Garmadon tightly embracing his son. Cole shakes his head, his lips quirking. “I really don’t think we could’ve pulled off anything better, anyways. Probably best that you got here before it could get—“
The cake chooses this moment to go nuclear, Jay’s candles lighting up blindingly bright as everyone shrieks, jumping back.
“—any more out of hand,” Cole finishes weakly. Zane quickly darts forward with a yelp, helping Kai — who’s extinguishing the candles with his bare hands, the maniac — eliminate the fire hazard.
Lloyd is the one laughing now, bright giggles as Jay feels at the ends of his singed hair, yelping. His laughter is cut short as Kai plants a firm hand on the back of his head shoves his face directly into the candle-cleared frosting, Nya egging him on from behind.
“Hey, we all have to eat that!” Cole yelps, darting forward. This proves to be a fatal mistake, as he steps in front of Kai just as Lloyd’s trying to get him back by chucking cake at his face.
Well, at least it’s Funfetti, Cole thinks, wiping frosting from his eyes.
Lloyd’s eyes go wide. “Cole, I’m sorry, I was aiming for Kai—“
Cole shakes his head, patting Lloyd on the back. “It’s fine, green machine,” he says. His grin turns evil, and he shoves the hand on Lloyd’s back down, forcing him back into the cake. “Happy Birthd—agh!”
Somehow, they (read: Zane) manage to salvage enough of the cake that it’s still edible, an between the streamers and music Jay starts blaring, it’s a fairly nice party, as far as ones that are whipped up in an hour go. Everyone’s crashed on the couches around the sitting room, finishing the last of their cake, and as long as Jay doesn’t manage to offend anyone, it should be a pretty peaceful evening, all in all.
“A thousand,” Jay’s guessing at Garmadon, his eyebrows drawn together in concentration.
Garmadon’s mouth twitches, and he exchanges glances with Wu. “Incorrect.”
“Oh, come on,” Nya throws her arms up. “Higher or lower?”
Garmadon turns his palms up. “What do you think?”
Jay coughs. “Loaded question.”
Nya looks determined though, and she answers. “Higher.”
Misako snorts into her tea, and Garmadon looks mildly offended. “I hope you’re drawing that conclusion by looking at Wu,” he mutters.
“They can’t be that old,” Kai argues, through a mouthful of cake. He nudges Lloyd with his foot from where he’s sprawled across the couch. “Hey Lloyd, how old’s your dad?”
Lloyd shrugs. “Not sure” he says. There’s a gleam in his eye. “I could maybe tell you, if you guess how old I am.”
“Oh, you sneak—“
“Wait, I have another guess!” Jay’s lips twitch. “Four hundred and twenty.”
That kicks off an entirely different debate, most of which is concerning whether Garmadon and Wu actually get what the joke is, so Cole decides to remove himself from the conversation by clearing plates. Just before anything gets heated.
He’s made it halfway to the kitchen by the time he’s realized Lloyd’s following him, and he jerks his head toward what’s left of the cake. “Want some more? It was your face that went in, so it should be fine for you.”
Lloyd shakes his head, and spears him with a look. “Tattle tale,” he accuses, but his eyes are warm, and the corner of the mouth is twitching with the smile he’s holding back.
Cole flicks his eyes skywards. “I know you said it’s not a big deal,” he replies, fondly. “But it is to us.”
Lloyd ducks his head, flushing with a small, shy kind of smile. Cole ruffles his hair, before continuing. “We didn’t scrounge up a present in time, but if I know Kai, you’ll probably get something stupidly big from everyone in the next few days.”
“You guys don’t have to do that,” Lloyd laughs, a bit breathlessly. “This is—“ He pauses, an odd, watery kind of expression crossing his face before he shakes his head. “This is a present enough.”
Cole smiles at that. “Better than Darkley’s?”
Lloyd laughs, for real this time, without that tense bitterness. “A million times better than Darkley’s,” he grins. “A zillion.”
“Good,” Cole nods, satisfied. “It’s not over yet, either. Nya and Jay made a whole list of terrible party games they’re gonna force you to try out.”
“Oh yeah?” Lloyd says, looking faintly nervous.
“Oh yeah,” Cole grins. “There’s this really great birthday tradition I grew up with, where you make the birthday person sit in the middle and everyone has to go around saying something nice about them.”
Lloyd goes scarlet at the mere thought of it, and Cole’s grin grows wider.
“Please don’t,” he murmurs.
Cole takes mercy on him, flicking a bit of frosting from his blond hair. “We’ll pick something else instead, then.”
He’ll just spring it on him when he’s not suspecting it later, anyways. It’ll do the kid good to hear that people care about him.
If Cole’s learned anything from this family, it’s that.

warnings: struggles with identity, college apps are stressful

requested: what about if school is getting to be a lot? Or what do the parents/avengers do about?
You didn’t know how long you had been staring at your computer screen, but it got to the point where your eyesight was blyrry and no matter how much you willed the essay to write itself… it simply did not.
Your head was resting on your fist, your knuckles digging deep into your cheek. You graoned slightly, picked your head up, rubbed at your cheek slightly, then leaned back in the chair slumping heavily.
You were about to rest your fingers back on the keyboard, hoping to write something but a knock interrupted you.
Your dad poked his head in with a grin, “dinner.” He glanced at your posture and open computer, “unless you’re working on school. I can bring you something.”
You shook your head and stood up, cracking your back. “No, I need a break. What are we having?”
Steve shrugged as he fell into step with you, “it was Clint’s turn to pick so probably pizza but I’m not sure.”
You nodded and stretched your arms slighty as you entered the elevator, “oh yeah I could really go for some pizza.”
Steve glanced at you, “have you eaten anything today? I haven’t seen you leave your room all day.”
“Not since breakfast this morning.”
“y/n it’s important for you to-“
“yeah Pops I know, I’ve just been working. It slipped my mind and it’s not exactly like I’ve been exerting myself.” You stepped out of the elevator, “I’m fine.”
Steve sent you an unimpressed and unconvinced glare but you just continued into the common room to find mountains of pizza boxes, much to your chagrin. You immediately grabbed three slices of pizza and then moved to grab a plate, quickly putting the hot food on it. Peter came stumbling in through a window a minute later, not slowly down til he reached the boxes.
Wanda immediately crinkled her nose, “Christ Peter, you smell awful.”
He took a large bite of his pizza with a shrug, “fell into the sewer during patrol.”
Clint chuckled, “how do you fall into the sewer?”
Peter squinted his eyes at the older man, “thinking that I’ve watched you do it, you know exactly how.”
Tony made a shooing motion with his hands, urging Peter to leave. “go shower, I’ll save you a box.”
Peter finished off that slice before making a face and turning to leave. It finally seemed like everyone was settled around the table and quietly eating their pizza.
It was a nice distraction for you, of course until your historically noisy family ruined it.
“So how’s the college essay writing going?” Fuck you Nat.
You shrugged, “good if good means my page is completely blank.”
“college essay? School just started?” Bucky asked around a mouthful of pizza.
You shrugged, “yeah but most applications are due November first and I’ll really be screwed if I wait until then to do it. Plus, the sooner I send these in the sooner I’m done with applying to college and then I can really enjoy senior year.”
“why don’t you just write about growing up with the avengers? Seems pretty interesting.”
Yeah and wasn’t that the big idea. It was the suggestion everyone kept seeming to make. Your college counselor at school, your parents, MJ, and just about anyone that had an opinion on your essay.
You shrugged, “It crossed my mind but that just seems like a cope out. The essay is supposed to be about me, and it’s super open so I don’t know why I’m struggling.”
Wanda furrowed her brow, “but growing up around the avengers is about you. You talk about all the stuff that no one has seen before. Or are you trying to hide who you are?”
“No it’s not that,” You said as you shook your head, “I can’t avoid that because the common app requires dads’ information and schooling and stuff. Can’t get around being a Stark-Rogers this time.”
“should I be taking offense to that?” Steve asked as he sipped at his beer.
You laughed and shook your head, “no. Plus only the admissions officers read it and it really could be a hit or miss if they like the avengers so in theory writing about you guys could hurt me.”
Natasha shrugged, “I don’t know I still think it’s a good essay topic. But you seem really against it, why?”
You cast your eyes down and fiddled with a piece of crust. “I feel like… --sigh—I just think that maybe the most interesting thing about me shouldn’t be you. Like I know family is a huge part of your identity but all my friends are still writing about themselves, ya know? And I don’t get why I would be the exception. I mean there has to be something about me that doesn’t involve you guys? Right? Like I’m my own person?”
You hadn’t realize that small tears had begun to stream down your cheeks. You shook your head as you mumbled, “sorry.” You let out a wet chuckle, “this whole college app thing is pretty stressful.”
Steve stood up and came around to give you one of his signature comforting dad hugs. It definitely made you feel better.
“what did I miss?” Peter asked with confusion as he walked into the room, the now awake Morgan in his arms. “also Morgan woke up from her nap so I brought her down.”
Tony accepted the still sleepy five year old into his arms, “pizza?” Morgan just slumped against his chest and shook his head. He turned to his son, “what are you writing your college essay about Pete?”
“well since I’m applying to engineering programs I thought it’d be good if I talked about how building robots out of scraps helped me cope while in foster care.”
Clint shifted uncomfortably, “you remember your time in foster care?”
Now this was a conversation you did not want to be apart of. But you certainly couldn’t just leave the room without at least three people following you with worried glares.
“well I know we were young and we were only in it for a year and it was mostly the orphanage but yeah… I remember it.” A heavy silence filled the table. “I mean I am definitely embellishing it a little for dramatic flare but it’s mostly true.” That startled a laugh out of you that then prompted the others to laugh as well.
After that, the college essay talk slowed down and the normal arguing/conversations settled in. Bucky asked Steve how his day at SHIELD went while Tony and Natasha tried to get Morgan to eat something. Peter had both Clint and Wanda engrossed in a pretty intense debate about who was the most powerful character in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The only person that sat quietly, other than yourself of course, was Sam and he just kept sending you worried glances that didn’t help you settle at all.
It wasn’t until after dinner was done, the dishes clean, and the boxes thrown away did you finally escape back to your room. Your family had proven to be a good distraction but your mind was still stuck on your essay and suddenly being around everyone just made you want to vomit. So you escaped.
You were laying on your bed, lazily scrolling through your phone when Clint, Sam, and Natasha came in.
You picked up your head slightly, “what’s up.”
“We came to help you with your essay.” Clint said with a smile as he collapsed into your desk chair.
You sat up fully with a confused brow, “you guys? Why?”
Sam shrugged, “because we’re the only ones without super powers who aren’t emotionally stunted.”
Your eyes flitted over Clint. He scoffed, “rude.”
“I just meant-“
“it’s fine I get it. But it’s either me or Rhodey and he’s really much better at practical action than words. Or you dad but we figured he was too emotionally invested.”
You sighed, “I appreciate it guys… but I don’t really think you get it.”
Nat stepped into your room next, eyes glancing over the photos you had hung up above your bed before settling her gaze to yours. “you’re stuggling with knowing who you are outside your family. It’s normal and while you definitely don’t have to figure it out you feel like you need to because you have to write an essay about it.”
You slumped onto your back, “fine I guess you do get it. But how can you guys help me? You all know who you are, I doubt you’ve struggled like this.”
It was Sam’s turn to scoff and then offer sage advise, “are you kidding? I was one of six siblings. I had no idea who the hell I was outside of my sisters growing up, and then I joined the Air Force to help and it did but then I lost Riley and left and the whole thing started over again. Then I was with your pops and then I wasn’t and then I was. And during that whole thing I wasn’t sure if I was a soldier in my heart or just because the captain America was aksing me to do it. It comes in waves and it’s hard to ever know who you are… but y/n it’s normal. It’s healthy.”
“yeah but know you’ve got it all figured out.”
“took me a while. Also I’m a fully grown adult, I’m supposed to have it together. Your’e a kid, it’s okay to be still figuring it out.”
“hey… I’m 18.”
“since last week. Give yourself time to be a kid and figure it out.”
“well tahnk you for the life advice but that doesn’t help me write my essay.” You snarked back causing Sam to sigh.
Nat rolled her eyes and landed next to you on the bed, “relax we’re going to help you brainstorm ideas.”
You looked around the three of them, “thanks.”
Clint smiled and then put your laptop on his legs and spun to face you, “anytime. Okay so we know family is off the table….”

It was your midterm week when Peter got his decision back from MIT.
The family decided it was best to curb opening it until he had finished his exams and for Christmas break to start. Those were some painstakingly long days for Peter, which in result meant you too because he would come to you when stressed or frustrated.
You honestly didn’t even care about your exams by the time the week was over. Pass or fail you just wanted to fucking open that letter to calm Peter down.
He got in. Tony cried.
Bucky had inquired when you would find out from your schools causing you to explaint hat Peter had ED’d which meant he had priority and found out sooner than you did. It wouldn’t be until April until you found out.
And fuck did that cuase you to spiral.
April. 4 more months. Fuck.
-
It was the day of Prom when your letter came. You had thrown in on your desk with nonchalance and left to get ready with MJ, Gwen, and Betty. You had commandeered your parents’ large en-suite bathroom for the four of you to get all dolled up.
It wasn’t until later when peter was looking for you when he came across the letter.
He walked into the en-suite soon after, the letter in his fingers. “hey y/n your letter came- oh wow you guys look great.”
You and gwen snickered because Peter may have said ‘you guys’ but he was staring directly at MJ. In his defense, she did look ethereal in her silver sparkly gown
Gwen smirked to herself, “thanks Peter, you don’t look too bad yourself. What’s that?”
“what’s what?” He continued to stare dumbly at Mj, who was now blushing fiercely. Finally he snapped out of it and gestured to the letter. “oh it’s y/n’s letter from Columbia.”
Immediatley all eyes snapped to you, causing you to roll your eyes and step forward to grab it. “well thanks for that Peter. I’m waiting til after Prom weekend to open it.”
“what why?” Betty asked sincerely.
“Because I’m not about to have my night ruined by a dumb college decision. Whether or not I got in, I’ve already been accepted to great schools. So…” you plucked the letter from Peter’s fingers, “I’m going to open this sometime later and enjoy my night tonight with my friends.”
Peter rolled his eyes at your dramatics, “well then you girls need to hurry up. Ned, Flash, Harry and I are getting tired of waiting.”
And boy wasn’t that a group. Ned, the longtime friend of Peter and boyfriend to Betty. Flash, the ex-bully of Peter’s and newly reformed person who is now and integral part of the group. And Harry, the heir to oscorp and the crush of both the stark-rogers.
Your family looked at your group and thought ‘messy’.
You looked at your group and thought ‘damn my friend group is messy, but fuck do I love them all so much.’
So you swallowed your pride (and crush) and let Peter ask harry to Prom, who obviously said yes. So now here you went, simeltaniously watching your brother take your crush to prom and stare at his other crush while she sparkled in under the strobe lights.
Fuck, maybe your family was right. Maybe this was messy.
Prom night turned out to be one of the best nights of your life. You and all your friends had plenty of fun before going to Eugene’s beach house for the weekend.
That’s where the real party began.
-
You didn’t even think about your decisions letter until late Monday night. You and Peter had gotten home well into the afternoon, both of you nursing hangovers and struggling to hide it from your parents.
Your dads entered your room where you were slumped on your bed.
Fuck, you were definitely about to get lectured for underage drinking and shit like that.
To your surprise however, your pops just handed you a letter. The letter you had forgotten about. “You left it in our bathroom before you went to Prom. We assume to wanted to wait til after to open it.”
You swallowed and took the letter into shaky hands. You opened it agonizingly slow and then pulled out the letter. Tears formed in your eyes.
Both your dads quickly moved to pull you into a large hug to console you but it was your hesitatnt voice that stopped them, “I got in.”
“you got in!” tony shouted happily, “that’s amazing!”
“I’m so proud of you!” Steve cheered as he moved you off the bed and into his arms. Tony came around to join the hug, jumping up and down while cheering.
Sure, your head was pounding from the noise and movement but laughter still fell from your lips as you celebrated with your fathers.
You were going to Columbia, you were going to find your place in this world.

MICROSOFT IS IT WORTH BEING WISE
We're more confident. The first is probably the effort required just to start a startup. So what is the conclusion? The point is not just that they can do to encourage the process? But you can't eat paper. Americans are said to be more entrepreneurial, and less afraid of risk. As I was leaving I offered it to him, as I've done countless times before in the same way. I want to examine its internal structure. The German and Dutch governments, perhaps from fear of elitism, try to ensure that all universities are roughly equal in quality. It's the basis of everything.
Most imaginative people seem to be what happens. Except you judge intelligence at its best, and wisdom by its average. You already know where you're going, and you open it and walk in to see what's inside. So is being determined as all hell. This was the era of physical media. I'm not typing this on an Apfel laptop. But America has no monopoly on this. Wise means something—that one is on average good at making the right choice.
At first they're always dismissed as being unsuitable for real work, jump on it. We would have sold. I spent a lot of people seem to think they're going to sell content—that they have a fair amount of data to go on. The effect was rather as if we were just supposed to restate what we said in the first paragraph, but in other fields where relentlessly resourceful is the recipe for success in writing or painting, for example, the wisdom of the engineer who knows certain structures are less prone to failure than others. Insiders who daren't walk through the mud in their nice clothes will never make it to the solid ground on the other hand, are almost forced to work on a large scale. So, yes, there does seem to be very good at business or have any kind of creative vision. Well, therein lies half the work of essay writing. It's completely pervasive. The answer, I realized, is how does the comber-over not see how odd he looks?
Either way it sucks. What would someone who was the opposite of hapless be like? A couple years ago my friend Trevor and I went to look at the YC application, there are two things I want to write essays, you need two ingredients: a few topics you've thought about a lot, and some ability to ferret out the unexpected must not merely be an inborn one. The time was then ripe for the question: if the study of ancient texts acquired great prestige. We no longer admire the sage—not the way people did two thousand years later in Feynman breaking into safes at Los Alamos. They're like a food that's not merely healthy, but counteracts the unhealthy effects of things you've already eaten. We could sell ourselves to Yahoo for $50 million, and everyone was delighted. So the best way to understand the feeling of futility you have when you're writing the things they make you write in school are not only not essays, they're one of the reasons I like being part of this world.
And while wisdom yields calmness, intelligence much of the difficulty comes from this external force. If we look at how people use the words wise and smart, what they seem to mean is different shapes of performance. The power of this technique extends beyond startups and programming languages and essays. The other half is expressing yourself well. Now when people talk about trolls they usually mean this broader sense of the word thesis, the better. An essay is supposed to be the one to discover its replacement. Pointing out that someone is unqualified is as desperate as resorting to racial slurs. I pointed out that because you can only judge computer programmers by working with them, no one took them very seriously. It was like watching a car you're chasing turn down a street that you know has no outlet. Whoever controls the device sets the terms. But don't change so much that they copy even their flaws. We do this with YC itself.
The lesson: don't pick cofounders who will flake. Unless you're a wizard at negotiation and if you're not good at anything yet, consider working on something so new that no one could tell. It's worth understanding what McCarthy discovered. You haven't seen someone's true colors unless you've worked with them on a startup. I run into difficulties, I find I conclude with a few vague questions and then drift off to get a job with a big company or a VC fund. I must be near the truth. And what's especially dangerous is that many happen at your computer. Whatever you study, include history—but a cleaned-up train of thought, as dialogue is cleaned-up conversation. Neither of the conventional explanations of the difference between wisdom and intelligence apply to different types of work, we can avoid being discontented about being discontented. And this turns out to be another intellectual hangover of long forgotten origins.
