sitting in my Intro to Shakespeare class, and someone just pointed out that The Tragedy of Coriolanus sounds a lot like The Hunger Games? And it makes sense??

Coriolanus is of course the name of President Snow in THG, and is the name of the tragedy's titular character. Plutarch is the Head Game Maker in Catching Fire, and is also the name of a man involved in the tragedy.

Tribunes are two representatives of those who are not aristocrats, and the Tributes are involved in the Games, two representatives from each district.

It's actually kind of shocking, because I had no idea this existed! I'd love to reach out to Suzanne Collins and see if this originally inspired the series before it became The Hunger Games as we know it today

it’s always hilarious to me how the show manages to portray steve as both the town’s cassanova and terminally bitchless. everybody wants him yet he still can’t find a girlfriend. my only conclusion to this is that while all the bittanys and jessicas in hawkins are fighting over who gets to ask steve out on valentines day he’s over there tragically sulking because he was destined to be the princess trapped in a high tower by a dragon saved by the knight in shining armor and is doomed to be trapped in the body of a hot twenty year old dude. to any outside observer it doesn’t make sense how he doesn’t choose any of the hot girls who are desperate for him to ask them out, but to those who know steve they know he’s just waiting for someone to romance him. and because of how young women work the fact that he’s still single and chronically unhappy just makes him even more desirable, because now not only is he hot and a nice guy he’s also pathetic and that is kryptonite to middle class women. robin keeps tearing her hair out watching how many hot women launch themselves at her wet cat bestie meanwhile steve is over there wondering if eddie likes guys and if pretending to enjoy metal music is worth the migraine just to be noticed by his crush, and the inevitable conclusion being that he’s going to die alone.

seen a couple people running to that "is it bad writing or do you not understand genre" post in regards to the ofmd upset. and let me remind people that this show was marketed as a romantic comedy, ESPECIALLY this season!

In that regard, I found an article/blog post that directly addresses the question "can you have character death in a romantic comedy?" And it really hits the nail on the head.

Even if you were to make the argument "well it's a dark comedy!" or "its a pirate show!" there's still a balance that needs to be met if you don't want to alienate your audience.

People are going to argue that the death was earned because they spent the entire season building up his character and "completing his arc". Well, I'll argue that they DIDN'T complete his arc. In fact they took about twelve steps back in his death scene by seemingly ret conning his progress and having him center Ed's feelings on his literal deathbed. So it really feels a lot like fridging, because that's exactly what it was. Izzy's death was for Ed's arc, not his own. And they spent so much time focusing on Izzy all season, focusing on his growth and giving him such a specific arc about queerness and recovery, that yeah, his death feels like a slap to the face and not a tragic story beat that makes the story all the richer.

Sometimes I think Will was asking Bedelia if Hannibal was in love with him just to be bitchy but sometimes I honestly think Will thought Hannibal was using him as a plaything, as if Hannibal wanted to court Will for the gaslighting of it. Maybe Will feared it was an infatuation like Hannibal's infatuation with Alana, manipulating her into vouching for Hannibal's whereabouts. I think Will was falling for Hannibal in s1 but then figured none of that was genuine interest when Hannibal put him behind bars.

I truly wonder if Will just thought Hannibal was being the middle school bully that asked you out just to embarrass you and laugh if you said yes... No actual romantic intention, just being mean, playing with Will psychologically. This is the game I think Will THOUGHT he was playing in season two. Hannibal thinks he's manipulating me but I'm making him think I'm snowed! But I'm not! I think Will finally started to understand when he realized Abigail was alive... No, he's not just playing with me, Hannibal really loves me. Hannibal loves... ME?? Meat is back on the MENU bitches

"you came here, you gave me a banner and said i had to swear allegiance to you. scar came over to me and said he'll fix my roof" there's something so human about that. because that's all joel ever really wanted, isn't it? against all the grandeur of the life series, all the betrayals and swords swung in unison and bridges burnt, he stands out in how little he cares about any of that. he doesn't need an army at his side, he doesn't need someone to stand at his back and lay their life down for him when the time comes. no, he cares for the simpler things, the things that almost make you forget that it's a death game. he cares for his builds and his dead bush monopoly and his silly beard that is not stuck on, thank you very much - maybe precisely so that he can forget that it's a death game. all the murder and betrayal and his own excessive bloodthirst - if he doesn't apply any of it any significance, then a game is all it is and soon enough it'll all be over and then they'll do it all again. ignoring his problems until they go away is what he's good at, and this is just the bigger of them. if he ignores this, too, if he doesn't think too deep about the blood on his fingers or the ash in his lungs, then he can wake up in a new world and build himself a helter skelter and it'll all be fine.

ren and martyn will come looking for grand declarations of loyalty, a crown dripping with blood and the same hand-sewn banner stuck to every shield. but all joel ever really wanted was for someone to fix his roof, feed his dogs, sit down next to him and cool the scorching fire inside until there was something other than the hollow void beneath.

Okay my ‘why Kipperlily hates Riz’ theory: She handed out business cards first day, he handed out business cards first day, she’s tiny, he’s tiny, they’re both obviously overeager teacher’s pet type A rogues, they’re like male and female versions of each other and it’s obvious to everyone. What would most high schoolers do, in that situation, seeing another kid so similar to your friend on the first day that they somehow BOTH made business cards to hand out at school? AND they’re going to be taking classes together? You say “Omg, he’s literally the boy version of you, you’re SOULMATES, you’d be perfect together!” And what do you do when your type A tight-ass friend acts embarrassed by that? You tease her about it more obviously. You think it’s just good natured ribbing, and she KNOWS it’s just good natured ribbing, but for some reason she gets unreasonably angry any time she sees Riz after that. Maybe even uncomfortable? But she KNOWS she doesn’t have a crush on him, so why does it bother her so much?
