sooo we have another turtle/character to add to the collection~

I have a lot to say on him. . . so slash is interesting to say the least in cannon he’s either a Tortoise, Box turtle, or Diamond back terrapin, which will be brought up in a moment,

so with spike. . . . Slash I made him resemble Raph because he was mutated with Raphs DNA, I like to think because he was mutated with Raphs DNA he’s technically related to them, making him their older brother,

I like to think because it was a mutant turtles DNA he was mutated with and not a humans he’s a lot more ‘feral’ for that reason he doesn’t have as much human DNA to dilute his instincts as much, which is why he growls so much and also why he makes so many other sounds, why he may have a better since of smell? Part of why he was so aggressive and also why he’s so big Compared to the others (Note: he’s that big because of the Snapper DNA he has)

This actually works a lot for my re-design things, and helps him being related to the turtles because after he's muted he looks a lot like a Snapping turtle (in cannon which is odd) so it works really well here because Raph (& Leo) is part Snapper! Seriously he took literally Every snapper gene Raph had to give. . . . weather he had been a Tortoise, Box-turtle, or even Diamond back terrapin, it was overridden by the aligator Snapper-

he’s got the teeth/three sets of fangs, sharp beak as well, long tail, spikes all over including his fists, shoulders and elbows all like Raph,(more on that in a moment) Slash’s shell also had spikes tho some of them where supposed to be pyramiding, which he got in between S2 E7: Slash and destroy, and S2 E17: Newtralized, due to his mutation, change in environment and what he was eating afterwards, he ended up getting this (tho this detail isn’t noticeable at all, but it Was Ment to be there)

tracking back to the spikes, their from Aligator Snapper DNA and also the mutation in a way, the spikes on his tail, head, shoulder, knees, elbow, and hands, (is that all?) are all different compared to Raph (& Leo) their much sharper and almost like straight bone, instead of bone and thick skin (Which is why their colored that way with the fade, the mutation)

Additional details are his accessories with his ¿shorts? Matching Raph’s but with teal instead, and his Red arm band matching Raph as well, (it was a gift from Raph after S2 E17) theres also his mask which has a teal fade and specks, his pink arm band is actually a nod to his old play-mates toy/his older designs. (also his belt symbol it the Hamato crest)

his specks aren’t as full as Raphs and more like Leo’s where their fewer but their in specific areas, specifically around his spikes, which speaking of! I love how I colored them! They look so pretty! And the colors are beautiful together!~ I can’t get over how nice it is!

he’s 6’1” and I like to think he’s about 19-20 as a mutated turtle, this is because he was an adult turtle by the time he was mutated, and not a baby turtle like the others.

I didn’t have to much trouble drawing him, the only real problem was figuring out how to place his leg, but I think it was mainly just coloring him, example you can actually see his pink arm band change shades because it didn’t go well with the rest of his color pallet, I generally had a lot of trouble with the color pallet, you can actually see this on the pictures because there’s So many shades of green sitting there.

also as you can see with the first picture some things where missing, like his tail and his shell coloring, those things a drew on the fly (hehe) wall writing this so their not the best examples, also I have no idea if I missed something or didn’t elaborate properly Apologies

some important calvin and hobbes facts in case you haven't read the original comic strip in a long time or only absorbed stuff on it from memes and out of context bits on here:

Calvin's last name has never been given, and neither has any of his parent's names. This was actually why his uncle Max only showed up for a brief storyline; the creator of the comic, Bill Watterson, ultimately felt that while it was fine to have him as someone for his parents to talk to, it felt far too awkward to never have Max refer to them by name and he never made a return appearance.

The general tone of the comic is fairly light-hearted, with a big emphasis on goofy slapstick comedy contrasted by clever wordplay and often surprising adult-centered jokes that'll hit you like a slap. A big part of the comedy is, as Watterson put it (paraphrased) "It's really funny to me when people express deeply stupid ideas with really fancy terminology." One notable example you might have seen is that one bit where Calvin asks his mom for money to buy a Satan-worshiping rock album and his mom replies that there's nothing genuine about them and they're just putting on the attitude for shock value, and comisserates with Calvin as he deplores that mainstream nihilism can't be trusted. He concludes that childhood is disillusioning.

There is a LOT of criticism of the extreme materialism and selfish mentality of the late 80s, when the comic was initially written. This may go a long way to explain how its aged so well; much of what it criticizes resonates well with people today.

Bill Watterson views comic strips a legitimate form of artwork, and repeatedly fought to have more space to draw more beautiful and artistic backgrounds, which was a very hard fight and unpopular even with other comic strip artists. He eventually did win some compromises and a lot of Calvin And Hobbes' artwork shows it, with the use of space to indicate time as well as a sharp contrast between the often plain environments of mundane life contrasted by the wildly beautiful imagery of Calvin's imagination (which often sports realistic depictions in an art shift of sorts).

Hobbes is explicitly not an imaginary friend, by word of Watterson himself. We don't know WHAT he is exactly, and Hobbes is apparently unaware of the strange nature of his reality; people look at him and only see an ordinary stuffed tiger plushie, but he has a tangible effect on the world that would be physically impossible for Calvin to do on his own. He's apparently been around for a while, and was apparently around when Calvin was a young baby.

On that note; Hobbes has implicitly killed (notably treated as both a gag and also with the vibe of 'he's a tiger, duh') and while he doesn't do it again on-screen, he doesn't have any moral issues about it. Calvin claims that he's never had trouble bringing Hobbes to school because the last time he did, Hobbes killed and ate a bully named Tommy Chestnut and simply comments that it was gross and he needed a bath. Calvin's tried to repeat this again, but Hobbes was grossed out at the thought having to eat a kid raw and not being allowed to use an oven first, or complaining that children are too fattening.

Hobbes became gradually less human-like in body language and more like an actual cat in both body language and behavior; this was due to Watterson drawing more inspiration from his cat, who also inspired a lot of Hobbes' running gags, such as pouncing on Calvin when he got home. Several years into the syndication of the strip, Watterson's cat passed away, and he did a tribute to her with a comic strip of the two of them agreeing to try to dream together so they can keep playing when they have to sleep; Watterson's commentary (if I recall right), remarks on his cat: "We can see each other again in dreams."

the problem with drawing landscapes is that every time i see the perfect subject from the corner of my eye while youre walking down the street its literally never feasible to like. pull out my sketchbook and start Capturing. sure i can take a photo of it but that photo will literally never like....hold and retain the sensory information of standing Right there in Real life in That exact spot with That Weather and That Time of day that i feel like i need to really Draw a landscape accurately. also there arent any human people or faces. so i get bored. because i am weak.

okay, listen: Rook would have liked you regardless. and not only because he likes everyone. Professor Crewel supervises the science club, and Rook seems to like nothing more than hounding him with hypotheses

...so, whenever Crewel shoos him away, he comes to you

you have such an interesting eye for design and detail, that's all! and he'd be happy to supply you with whatever chemical compounds or organic materials you need for your next daring design

he'd be happy to help, too- or just to admire the way you think and draw and breathe and- you get it

...as long as you don't tell Crewel, that is

he complains? you complain. he blows something up? you blow something up. he throws a fit about wearing a frilly blouse? before Vil can even get a word in, you've set fire to a sofa in the lounge

...even if he doesn't understand a lick of what you're saying

one time, he shows you how he carves apples, and you start rambling about the beauty of it, how you'd love to make a design based off of it, and as he's beaming, showing off the perfect little dove he'd done, you pick up the PEEL and run off with it!

...oh, well. if it's good enough for a fancy fashion designer like you, it's good enough for him

i don't participate in any sort of svsss fandom stuff so my apologies if this has been said already but a HUGE part of the humor of that book comes from how it parodies typical isekai harem tropes and not just in the way you might think. there's the typical "wow so cheaply derived porn trope" humor but part of the humor is also in that despite LBH being the original protag, the book SVSSS itself features SQQ as the protagonist.....

ppl like to joke about SQQ's "harem" but the humor of the harem isn't just in that he has one at all (when normally that would be LBH's role), it's how every "member" of that harem fulfills a typical isekai harem role in an inverted way!!!!!!

most obvious example is LBH. he's an inversion in that he's originally intended to be an all-powerful demon king who's a housewife in SVSSS, but (imo) the humor in his "role" is that he's supposed to fulfill the trope of the young abused battle-hardened "demon" girl who longs for peace and housewifery and latches onto the older man who showed him kindness -- except instead of being a moe anime girl, he's an all-powerful protagonist-style power insert hero. so, not so much an inversion of "this demon king is actually a housewife??" and moreso "this housewife is actually a male demon king" (which might not sound like much of a difference at all, but it's moreso about how the MEN fulfill harem girl tropes and not the other way around.)

another example is YGY - set up as a "big brother" figure and clearly has history with SQQ. he's meant to fulfill the trope of the clingy "older sister" childhood friend who promises marriage to the protagonist and has clear history w/him but is insecure about his role because he's not as "appealing" as the other options. his humor as a "romance option" comes from 1. him being a man (you might notice this is the case for a lot of these LOL) and 2. actually, in fact, being immensely powerful - it's another inversion of the trope of the physically weak "starter" harem girl who agonizes over being unable to do more for her beloved childhood friend in their journey.

my favorite example: LQG is the most obvious "tsundere tomboy" trope ever. physically powerful, out of touch with her emotions, gets flustered and aggressive with her crush, focuses on getting stronger above all else yet somehow extraordinarily beautiful -- all of these are extremely obvious tropes assigned to this "tsundere tomboy" trope, with the humor lying in the contrast of LQG actually being a man. the succubus extra is hilarious not just because of the awkward situation and their reactions, but because it's an EXACT setup of an extremely common scene in isekai harem novels. the cold tsundere beauty gets affected by succubi, doesn't know what to do, goes to the protagonist for help - it's the exact kind of situation that would have the protagonist pushing her down and saying lines like "you shouldn't act like this - i'm a man too, don't you know?" and making her aware that she's a woman and "in danger" around him. it's funny because LQG is very much a man, and indeed SVSSS parodies this directly by having SQQ tell LQG that he's a man too, he'll understand if he needs to jerk off! no worries!

even ZZL falls into the trope of the typical beast-kin girl who's saved by the protagonist and falls into his harem, subverted by his loyalty to someone ELSE besides SQQ and nonchalance as he does it.

it's the main draw of the humor of the novel for me and i surprisingly feel like not enough people talk about just how much SVSSS really leans into being a parody of a harem-collecting isekai....

and if you're curious about my credentials for making this post: if you name a shitty isekai novel, i've almost definitely already read it all. i read too many midsekais. it's like an addiction.

Katara in the Fire Nation

This is one of the outfits that from the start of this project I was frantically trying to problem solve for. I love the canon outfit so much and I knew it was a fantastical blend that didn't have as much direct inspiration (especially compared to Ba Sing Se for example). So... while throwing out wider and wider nets for inspiration I found a video of a Thai Miss World/Beauty Pageant dance ensemble and thought huh, that's a great skirt. The rest is history?

Erik in a relationship

warning : fluff, hurt/comfort, kissing and cuddling, mention of death, written before the film came out

Summary : Part of the new generation of the Campbell family, the black sheep that everyone likes, covered in tattoos and piercings, Erik is not only an excellent artist but also an excellent partner in every sense of the word.

°He might have a rough exterior, the jet-black hair, the silver piercings in his skin and the tattoos running down his body, but such an exterior was deceptive. Erik may have had a strange exterior but his interior was all the softer and gentler, at least most of the time.

°The outside could be deceiving and at first his partner thought that Erik was a taciturn, withdrawn tattoo artist, which was only half the truth, because after she got to know him she saw that his smile made him even prettier and his cheerful demeanour so inappropriate for such a dark exterior.

°Dark and cheerful was the best match, Erik was a man of many pleasures, he loved to draw on new designs, loved to spend time with his love and his family. Whether it was at garden parties, simple walks, a chat or just being together in silence, he enjoyed many things as long as he knew his loved one was with him.

°He had given her a sign of his love, ‘Forever with me’ and showed her the tattoo of the black rose with her name engraved on the stem. A gift with a touch of the macabre, but it wouldn't be macabre if it wasn't Erik, it was his way of showing that he loved her. He loved her endlessly, a kiss when they woke up, one when they said goodbye, one when they got home and just his hand on her whenever he could.

°He was a tattoo artist and the skin of his clients was his canvas, but her skin, her skin was sacred, it was warm and soft, his love made him paint on her, he created individual designs just for her, one after the other. ‘For the most beautiful canvas,’ he joked as he finished painting the ornate pattern on her arm, a pattern that she later actually had engraved.

°Of course, he tried to make the tattoo as pleasant as possible for her, the best couch, snacks before and after, a gentle voice and his most precise work. ‘Done! You're beautiful’ he said as he put the tattoo machine aside and gently took her hand to lead her to the mirror. Seeing her radiant face meant everything to him. Knowing that she was happy, that she was enjoying his art showed him that he had done everything right.

°But he did everything right too, the morning was always an amusing sight, the tousled dark hair, the tired look in his eyes as he adjusted his piercings which had shifted slightly due to his moving sleep. But with a coffee in his hand, her kiss on his cheek and a little light, the world looked different to him. They woke each other up and kept each other awake because they both loved to fall asleep cuddling just as quickly instead of going to work.

°Erik was a person who didn't look like one, but he loved cuddling. After a long day at work, he would just come home, put his things down and fall onto the couch, snuggle up to his girlfriend under the soft blanket and close his eyes. ‘Don't wake me up, that's for the best’ she heard him murmur as she closed her eyes too and was just happy to have Erik with her.

°Life wasn't always rosy, but even in the dark moments he was there for her and she for him. When the accidents became more frequent, the fright grew bigger and bigger and she saw how nervous he sometimes seemed, she took time for him, held him close and calmed him down. But that's exactly how he reassured her, knowing how quickly she got stressed about little things, ‘We will manage this together,’ he promised her and pulled her into his arms as well.

°Erik was the perfect example of a hard shell and a soft core, he would do anything for his love and his family. He would do anything to make them happy, he loved to be held and to feel and most of all he loved to see his love smile because then he knew that everything was alright and if not they would solve the problem together and a long hug had solved a lot.

Hi, I’m Metal! I’m a freelance artist from good ol’ New Jersey. My favorite things to work with are a lot of bright colors, exaggerated poses, and candid scenarios. I try to farm sensible chuckles whenever I can, so I’m also big into comics. Did you originally have a background in art? If not, how did you start?

I guess so! It’s funny, I don’t remember a single time in my life that I wasn’t drawing as a hobby… somewhere in middle school (a little late, I know.) I put the pieces together that animated movies were made by artists, and that it wasn’t just for fun, they were paid to do it. The moment I discovered people could be paid to make art, I decided I would do that, too. Now I’m here!

How has your style developed over the years?

I think the best way to answer this would be with an example! Over the last few years, I have made more of an effort to draw more intentionally, which sounds silly. Now, I put more thought into my poses and step out of my comfort zone with shape language and composition. I had a phase where I drew everyone with a huge, perfectly circular head and no nose. That definitely did not lend much variety...

Which 3 famous artists (dead or alive) would you invite to your dinner party?

Ack! I’m so terrible at history! I’d love to give a well-thought-out answer about fine artists of old, but I don't think we’d have much in common… Most artists I admire and who have driven me forward creatively are the people behind comics I’ve read. Andrew Hussie, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Eiichiro Oda... these guys have inspired me greatly and had a heavy influence in developing my art style and sense of humor. I’d love to ask them questions about their processes and upcoming projects. I think it would make for an entertaining night!

Over the years as an artist, what were your biggest inspirations behind your creativity?

Outside of pure aesthetics like searing bright colors, layered clothing, and loud noises…. the best and most inspiring moments in my life were those surrounded by friends and loved ones! I cherish the hell out of memories of hanging around in fun locations, trying weird food together, and impromptu midnight walks... so I try my best to capture that atmosphere and my own memories in my work when I can, even if I’m imposing fictional characters on top of them. That’s always the core of it.

What is a medium that you have always been intrigued by but would never use yourself?

I would never permanently refuse a medium, but every time I pick up clay, I’m like a baby using its hands for the first time. Absolutely dreadful. If one day I could make and paint a figurine like the ones I admire in videos, that would be awesome... But for now, I’m not counting on it.

How do you want to evolve as a creator?

I’ve had an absolute blast drawing fanart over the years, and it’s certainly played a massive role in my growth as an artist. But my dream has always been to publish my own stories for y'all to enjoy! I have lots of worlds I want to introduce to you before I’m old and gray. I want to get faster, work harder, and get better at drawing interesting settings so I can get the wheels turning as soon as possible. I also want to stop avoiding the color blue like a coward.

What do you wish you knew when you first started out creating art that you know now?

Pay your taxes quarterly. Tablets will break at the exact moment you need them most, so have a spare. Wear your blue light glasses. You’re going to need to wear a brace on every joint on the right side of your body. It can be lonely sitting at your desk all day. The car on the side of the road that costs $1000 cash….. don’t trust it!!!

Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?

@cranity—They use absolutely beautiful colors and weighty line work. Everything looks so sharp and clean! I wanna put it all up on my wall!

@vewn—Their ability to crank out quality short films and illustrations packed with detail is incredible. The off-kilter perspective they use really sells disorientation and catches your attention like nothing else.

@nelnal—They have absolutely banger character designs again and again, I can’t believe one person’s mind can come up with so many creative ideas!

@jinx88kc—They have a beautiful and recognizable style, and the way they incorporate animation into their illustrations sometimes is SO cool!
