Honestly, shout out to the Spiderwick Chronicles (the book series). You know they actually do know their fairy tales when they have one of the most lore-accurate ogre depictions in English-speaking modern literature.

"Hag Stones."
A Stone with a hole in it's center, or as the Celtics reffered to it as a "Hag Stone." A seeing stone.
Seen in popular media such as "Coraline." and "Spiderwick chronicles."
In Coraline it was used to find 'Lost' things, helping Coraline find the three missing ghost eyes to beat the other mothers game. But when first told Miss Spink and Forcible and two differing opinions.
"It's good for BAD things." > April
"It's good for LOST thing." > Miriume.
"In Spiderwick chronicles, it was a tool used to help a human see Fearies. Because only people with the sight or allowed to see the Fea can see them while most of the time they remain hidden. Only a "Seeing stone." Can help someone see the Fea clearly.
But thats in Fictional Media, what about real Hag Stones and their superstitions in real life?
"Celtic in origin. Referred as Hag Stones.
Also known as Holey Stones or Witch Stones, are stones that have naturally occurring holes and usually found near oceans or other bodies of water.
They are said to be powerful protection tailismans and when worn or carried they protect the bearer from curses, hexes negative spirits and harm.
They have also been used to prevent nightmares, being strung on a bedpost or placed underneath pillows. It is also believed that if you peer through the hole of the stone that you can see the Fae Folk and otherworldly entities. If one broke, it is thought to have used its power to protect life.
*With that last addition, it makes sense on why this was used in media such as Spiderwick Chronicles and Coraline from it's tie to the Fea and other supernatural entities.

I was a PA on this for about 10 days and I was SO excited to see how it would turn out. So sick of studios pulling this shit. The article says they're planning on shopping it around at least so maybe it won't be erased from existence? Still fucked that shows they delete from their platform can be pirated but if they refuse to ever publish them then there's no chance of everyone's hard work ever seeing the light of day :(

Do you ship it?
For context, Hogsqueal can spit in your eyes to give you "the sight", which is the ability to see magical creatures that you otherwise couldn't. Hobgoblin spit can do that.

If I had a nickel for every time a man in his early sixties dedicated his life to researching the strange and unusual and documented all his findings in a leather-bound journal which he later decided to hide away before promptly disappearing without a trace, only to make a grand return many years later after some brown haired 12 year old who also happens to be his nephew finds the journal again by pure accident and the two of them (including various other family members) fight off a dangerous and terrifying monster who wants to steal the journal for the valuable information it holds, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

So... yeah, in case anyone was wondering, as far as adaptations go... The Spiderwick Chronicles series is really bad. Not even the same story. Like... major plot points changed, it was unnecessarily dark (literally and figuratively... seriously! Can we please just stop filming movies and shows so that you still struggle to see after turning the screen brightness up the whole way?), characters were added for no reason at all, a romantic side plot was added for no reason at all, how people were related was changed for the sole purpose of adding extra drama... there were no goblins or hobgoblins (ya know... a pretty major part of the plot). The target audience is wrong. I see "Spiderwick" and want to share the wonder and whimsy of my childhood with my children. I do not want a dark gritty retelling that I can't show them until they are practically an adult and couldn't care less what I'd like to show them from my childhood.
*Please note: I'm not saying it wasn't entertaining to watch. It was alright. It had some decent effects and nice creature design. Thimbletack was very cute! I doubt I'll rewatch it, and I probably won't recommend it to many people. What I am saying is that it is a bad *adaptation.* This was not an adaptation. This was an alternative universe fanfiction that feeds off of nostalgia without actually understanding what people are nostalgic for. It was cool to see a free streaming company pick up a series like this and try their hand at it, and as I said, they did a good job in some areas. I hope they can learn from both the good and the bad and do better in the future.

Wait, the Spiderwick Chronicles show is OUT? And has been since THE 19? WTF how come no news of it has reached me?
I was wondering why my Spiderwick Chronicles post were suddenly getting a huge boom in popularity... Now that explains it all.
Well, time to go check out the show and see how they did it this time...
