New and (mostly) improved!#The death screens were not changed because I didn't think they'd get used for this video.#But Chilchuck getting one-shotted and leaving due to this being outside of his pay? Accidental comedy gold.#The full sprite (I didn't realize the bottom third would be hidden) says: “NOT PAID FOR THIS”#And yeah he's smoking. He gets a smoke break as part of his contract. Let a guy have his vices. He's teetering on a divorce.#Dungeon Meshi would be a fun rpg in theory but it would need to have immersive mechanics like cooking and foraging.#And hunger and fatigue and other status effects.#A slightly more lighthearted fear and hunger sort of game.#But that is for some other fan to do. This is just a fun tech demo for us to learn RPG maker!#So...with this mini-project concluded #we now have a foundation we can pass over to our actual game!#Next game dev post will be some game assets (probably busts and battle icons for the main party)#And after that! also can we just talk about the fact that in the Wish World, a woman can get away with calling another woman beautiful without setting off everyone's queer panic, but when a man does it to a man, it tips over the edge? so the Kates of the world are flying just under the radar, but are likely to be more emotionally repressed as a result - and yet, all the queer or queer-coded characters in this world are offered the same security and protection from doubt by the prospect of entering into an opposite-sex marriage...

#i may be emotionally attached to this topic #a good amount of my academic writing focused on queer invisibility in literature from time periods when queerness was subject to censorship #and specifically how women were represented in literature when women's queerness was particularly conducive to invisibility #and the contrast between kate and ibrahim's queer-codedness in this episode is so fascinating #ibrahim has a big queer panic reaction most likely because repressed queerness for a male character in this world is closer to the surface #whereas kate has sublimated her queerness and emotional repression into a fixation on rules and order #because work is where she can make things make sense #where she can keep things neat and tidy and cover up anything that feels off #hence the zoe evans comparison in my earlier post #honestly the way this interacts with the actors in both roles is fascinating #before dw one of alexander devrient's most notable appearances was as a queer stylist on ted lasso in a scene with masculine anxiety #and jemma redgrave made a career out of playing repressed queer-coded women before she was cast as kate #it's so fascinating because in the actual real world of the show they make an intriguing pair in a normal cool bisexual way #but against the backdrop of an overly repressed patriarchal society obsessed with reproductive futurism #they fall into more of a binary #so there's the adorable shoulder bump but also the comforting potential to be a beard couple and the safety that would come with that #he can rescue her from her spinster status and she can rescue him from anyone ever doubting his sexuality #there's so much here holy shit #brb i gotta go reread heather love's feeling backward and lee edelman's no future while watching this episode 8 more times #like a normal person #doctor who #dw spoilers #jemma redgrave #alexander devrient #kate stewart #christofer ibrahim #gay #queer stuff #queer tv #compulsory heterosexuality

One trait of Mapleshade that I find fascinating is the fact she *wants* to reveal the kittens are half-clan. She states that they will be loyal to both RiverClan and ThunderClan, as well as revealing the truth to the Clans (Not specifically the kittens?) I think Mapleshade is just interesting if you think about her as being this perpetual believer that everything will be okay, because StarClan loves her (She even states StarClan would love her children). She isn't afraid of them being rejected - doesn't even really consider that being a problem, because her children are special. Though I do feel this is a symptom of how the half-clan rule is just an ultimately cruel part of Clan-life, and Mapleshade unfortunately got caught in the midst of it. Especially seeing as her faith is kind of sad, knowing what will happen in the end - even as someone who dislikes Mapleshade.

yeah i think mapleshade's total faith in her own security mostly works to add to the tragedy. it's one of those books where no one really wins and i think serves as worldbuilding towards how fucked the warrior code is as a system but that either isn't intentional to the extent it goes or the writing team don't really want the readers to dwell on it. no matter how hard you try to appeal to the forces of oppression around you they will cut you down as soon as you are vulnerable and othered. they are not there to help you and cannot be won or reasoned with in a way that makes you truly immune unless you just are exactly what they want you to be.

mapleshade certainly has flaws pre-exile- she's self centred, rash, judgmental- but none of these make her an ontologically bad person or remotely justify what happens to her, it just makes it more of a gut punch for her when that sense of security and certainty is pulled out from under her feet. while a character like leafpool or bluestar is fully aware and fearful of the consequences for their transgression and will suffer in guilt and hiding until they are inevitably or resultingly punished for it, mapleshade does not have that understanding or sense of self preservation and is also, more immediately and directly, punished for it. no winning the starclan game!!

#wc talking #not sure how i ended up in the mapleshade discussion trenches again but ok!#most of my wc opinions just end up back at 'starclan and the warrior code and the status quo is a bad thing in these books'#mapleshade has been talked about to absolute death but i think she does represent a pretty unique side of forbidden romance characters #in that she doesnt really exist to fear the code the same way the more modern clans do. she thinks of it as a kind and understanding boss #who is gonna give her leeway for calling in sick to work last minute once she shows them her positive covid test #but instead she gets fired on the spot and given a bad reference for not begging and pleading forgiveness on her hands and knees
