Aziraphale has memorized Winnie the Pooh and it’s more important than you think
Basically Neil Gaiman was casually dropping hints about Good Omens 2 plot as early as 2019:
Aziraphale has memorized the Winnie the Pooh books, several Georgette Heyer novels, and Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic, though.
Georgette Heyer was an English novelist and short-story writer, in both the Regency romance (which she has virtually invented, based on extensive historical research as well as Jane Austen’s influences) and detective fiction genres. She used romantic plots and happy endings in both.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is, with the exception of Penhallow, her 1942 mystery novel explaining how a desperate act intended to bring about good consequences brings only more tragedy in its wake instead (and spoiler alert: murdering a thoroughly unlikeable elderly character doesn’t secure the expected peace or happiness).
Tumblr media
J. B. Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic, while not that modern anymore with a publishing date of 1952, provides a complete treatise on sleight of hand coin conjuring, making an excellent companion for those who want to impress and entertain with some classic magic tricks. Including working professional magicians like Fell the Marvelous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what about the Winnie the Pooh books? Sure, they offer the ultimate childhood escapist fantasy with a happy-go-lucky story and cheerful characters living in the Garden of— um, Hundred Acre Wood. The original Ashdown Forest is, by the way, located under the South Downs National Park authority.
Tumblr media
A. A. Milne participated in and survived two world wars. Writing was a creative way of talking about his struggles and those of many other individuals affected by trauma, mental health issues and illnesses that are left untreated and undiagnosed. Each of the animals famously symbolizes different disorder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And according to the major theme of the power of friendship saving the day (with an occasional help of Christopher Robin, who plays his ineffable game as long as his adults let him), even a scary guest turns out not so scary after all, becoming a new friend himself.

strawberry jam.

Tumblr media
with the tip of your toes softly smacking the wooden tiling of the floor, muted echoes bouncing off the four walls of the living room, you grasped that you’d better stay quiet. it was one in the morning, and you had no business being up at this hour, knowing full well that you had a fully packed schedule ahead.
in your heart, you were channeling some inner gremlin, snooping around your dorm like some rodent. however, your stomach made the call, growling and gurgling horrendously loudly in the break of dawn. you weren’t going to ignore its cries for food any longer, because it was starting to get more distracting, preoccupying your mind with mindless thoughts, when you should have been fast asleep.
for you, at least, weird cravings were always popping up in your mind, clouding your concentration whenever you were doing something that was genuinely important. a recent one was strawberry jam.
you were always a fan of strawberries. with every bite, there would always be an explosion of an addictive hint of tartness, combined with the flavourful sweetness. the taste alone was capable of a fully fledged strawberry addiction.
as of late, you started being more adventurous with strawberry products, choosing to buy things like strawberry ice cream, strawberry gummies, strawberry flavoured drinks, and the like. unexpectedly, you never really experienced that same mind-blowing ‘click’ that’d usually come with natural strawberries.
understanding your own palate preferences only strengthened the belief that you hated artificial strawberry flavoured things. hence, you resorted to the world of youtube tutorials, and decided to make your own homemade strawberry jam.
it sounded simple. crush the strawberries till they’re mashed, add the sugar and lemon juice in a saucepan to begin stirring over low heat, boil the mixture, and store it in a cool, dark area; you had never expected for a seven minute video to be this life-changing, but you had been making your own strawberry jam for the last four months, fridge stocked up with jars of the jam.
feet cautiously tapping against the smooth tiles, you gingerly snaked your arms to grab onto the handle of the fridge, the shape fitting nicely in your grip.
this was the hardest part; opening the fridge without causing a ruckus. from past experiences, where you boldly swung the fridge door open, creating the most deafening noise, fracturing the fragile veil of silence, you learnt that you had to do the complete opposite.
you remembered the mortified look on your roommate’s face as he turned the corner, expecting to see some robber jacking his air fryer or something. he was visibly relieved, yet appalled, when he caught sight of your fluffy winnie-the-pooh pyjama pants, because in his opinion, there was no way a thief would steal something in such a ridiculous, eye-catching outfit; your roommate, jungwon, who couldn’t resist telling you off, nagging at you like you were committing a felony for eating buttered popcorn at two in the morning.
your previous experiences taught you well, because according to yourself, you had mastered the skills to silently open a fridge.
you began to grip on the fridge handle tightly, your non-dominant hand applying a bit of pressure on the door, as the side of your dominant hand slid itself in between the fridge door and the fridge body. fingers carefully and slowly tugging at the seal of the fridge, you felt your heart thumping and pounding as though it were a train on tracks, the sound blaring into your ears.
as your persistently pried the fridge door open, you could see the faint streaks of light peering through the opening, ‘inflaming’ the abyss-blackness of the kitchen. gently, you tugged on it for a few more seconds, the fridge door swinging open slowly without much resistance.
giving yourself a small pat on the shoulder for how successful your attempt was, you now relished in being able to munch to your heart’s content.
timidly, you reached for the familiar glass jar, which had a big sticker label pasted diagonally on its surface. it read ‘y/n’s jam. DO. NOT. TOUCH’, so it was pretty self explanatory. the vermillion red hue of its contents seemed so incredibly tempting, even under the dingy light of the fridge. upon touch, you softly winced at the coolness of the material, your grip being rather frictionless with the gradual trickling of condensation droplets. you could feel victory approaching with fastened steps. just open the lid and grab a spoon, easy!
wrapping the lid of the glass jar with the hem of your shirt, you twisted it with much effort. to your dismay, there was a ‘pop’ that splintered the peaceful silence, fading into tintinnabulation. you could just sense jungwon stomping down the hall with his disheveled hair and his striped pyjamas.
the chilly air emitting from the open fridge now nipping and tingling against your chilblained feet, you could hear the vague sound of approaching footsteps.
jungwon had been sleeping rather peacefully actually, until his slumber was rudely disrupted by a sudden ping. he was half-awake, and still regaining his consciousness, as he stumbled down the dimmed hallway.
when he saw nothing that was particularly alarming in the living room, he turned to the only other place left— the kitchen.
the second he walked round the corner, he was blinded by the unpleasant burst of light. from the harsh squinting of his eyes, he could make out a glowing figure, which was frozen in its position. if he hadn’t recognised those neon-green mike wazowski shorts, he would’ve thought it was an angel, who was, for some reason, raiding his kitchen??
safe to say, jungwon gave you one long chiding for your occasional fridge scavenge, and he even went as far as to judge your preference to eat strawberry jam on its own, proclaiming that it was too thick and sweet to be consumed alone.
a night that was supposed to end with a pleased stomach, now ended with a debate regarding how one should eat jam.

Want to Change the World?
@flashfictionfridayofficial prompt - "pure imagination"
Some days, life really sucked.
Days spent in Hell, in the dark, dank corridors and offices packed with demons who didn’t maintain their corporations. Who let themselves rot and decay. Sitting through briefings or meetings Downstairs was high on Crowley’s list of least favorite things.
Days spent among humans could be worse. Sure, they were wonderfully creative, could be kind and good and warm. But they also really, really loved brutalizing each other in increasingly inventive ways that put Hell to shame.
And then there were other days where things should have been fine, where Crowley had absolutely no excuse for being miserable. Days when he was with Aziraphale, with his only friend. Days when they sat around together for hours, talking about everything in existence.
Usually, that made him happy. But not always, especially when he thought about how fragile it was.
Demons weren’t supposed to have imagination, but Crowley did, and it was incredibly overactive. Whenever he let himself lapse into thought for too long, his eager mind conjured nightmarish scenarios.
He imagined a world in which Hell won the War. Earth a charred wreck, the remaining humans torn apart over and over for demonic amusement. The angels too, probably. He could picture it too easily, Aziraphale chained up in a dark dungeon, screaming in agony, while Crowley frantically tried and failed to rescue his angel. And then he, too, could get chained up and tortured.
Or what if Heaven won? That might be even worse, in a way.
He imagined that too, imagined a “pure” world, a world in which everything was perfectly ordered and worked according to Heaven’s rules. A clockwork universe. All creativity and individuality stamped out, no free thought, definitely no free will. Aziraphale all in white, his expressive face stilled forever by Heaven’s control, going about his duties as a mindless drone.
“Crowley?”
Crowley jumped, splashing tea on himself. Luckily, it had cooled as he stared morosely at Aziraphale’s desk. “Shit, sorry. You were saying?”
“Well, I wasn’t saying anything particularly important. I was just, I don’t know…” Aziraphale gave a little shrug. “Prattling on a bit, I suspect. I think I wandered off into Restoration plays for a bit.”
“Hn. Sorry I missed that.” Chilled by his dark thoughts, Crowley set his tea down and pulled his jacket tighter around himself. “Some Restoration plays were pretty great.”
His own words sounded flat and empty, and he winced. But he could still see those depressing futures laid out before them, either as likely as the other. If he’d fucked up on his plans to influence the Antichrist…
“Are you quite all right, dear fellow?” Aziraphale asked in the sort of voice that implied he knew Crowley was very much not all right. “I didn’t make a mistake with the tea again, did I? It’s not infused basil leaves?”
Crowley tried to smile and utterly failed, then took a sip of his tea. “No basil.”
“Well. That’s a relief, I suppose.” Frowning, Aziraphale searched his face. The angel almost had to suspect what was wrong. He was so unfairly clever. “Hand me that book, would you?”
“Wot?” Crowley asked, then looked around. Winnie-the-Pooh sat on the coffee table. “This one? Why?”
Aziraphale let out a little huff as he took the book and flipped it open. “Well, you don’t seem to be in the mood for talking. So I thought I’d read to you.”
He didn’t wait for Crowley to object, instead immediately launching into a story rendition that was almost as embarrassing as his magic act. Different, exaggerated voices for each character, wildly theatrical expressions, sometimes even seated attempts to act out events.
Crowley loved it, just as he loved Aziraphale.
And as he listened to Aziraphale’s goofy reading, strength returned to him. No, he wouldn’t imagine a future in which he and his angel lost. As a demon with imagination, he’d better damn well put it to better use.
So he imagined a world that never ended, a world in which he and Aziraphale could stroll down lush walking trails. The angel’s warm hand closing around his, the enthusiastic patter of his voice as he pointed out birds and butterflies and whatever other shit caught his fancy.
They’d go for walks most days, probably, enjoying their time on this stupid, wonderful planet. They’d feed ducks loads of treats, pick wildflowers for each other, maybe plant their own garden. Sit on a blanket under the stars, a picnic basket close at hand, and talk about everything else they still wanted to do.
But no matter what they did or where they went, in the world that Crowley chose to imagine, they would always be together.

To read, or not to read? That is the question
Tumblr media
BBC Culture recently polled 177 book experts from 56 countries in order to find the greatest children's books ever written.
Within the #100GreatestChildrensBooks, it was great to see the Moomins, Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Toms Midnight Garden and several other personal favourites included on the list.
But what makes a good children's book? As C.S. Lewis once stated; “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.”
According to UNESCO, an estimated 750 million adults lack basic reading and writing skills. Of the adults estimated to be illiterate world wide, around 496 million of these are said to be women.
In the UK, the National Literacy Trust also report that 7.1 million people have 'very poor literacy skills' and according to the Ministry of Justice, '57% of adult prisoners had literacy levels below those of an 11-year old' child.

This is just for fun, fyi
I feel like making a ranked list of Disney feature movies, according to my personal preference, from "worst" to "best".  To begin, I have to list in chronological order, the ones I have yet to see, so that their absence in the list can be explained.
The Black Cauldron
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Oliver & Company
Doug's 1st Movie
Fantasia 2000
The Tigger Movie
Brother Bear
Home on the Range
The Princess and the Frog
Frozen II
Strange World
Now that I have a list of movies I have actually seen, some once, some several times, some many times, I can share my thoughts on each one, and what makes them so good, or not good.
The Little Mermaid
This one's a "not good", though it has some charm.  All the same, it goes on the very bottom of the list, namely because (1) Ariel is sixteen years old and wants to run away from home to chase after a guy she finds handsome and (2) that whole "never underestimate the power of "body language"" line.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
This movie was a triumph at the time, but honestly there are only seven redeeming features: the dwarves.  As a main character, Snow White is insipid.  Giselle from Enchanted has a similar premise in her story, but she manages to be gullible in a way that doesn't remove her charm and claim to intelligence.  The queen is scary, which is fine for adults, but a child watching that movie may have nightmares.  Case in point: I did.
Pinocchio
Again, with this movie, the main character did not claim my allegiance.  I liked Jiminy Cricket, I liked Geppetto, and I liked the cat and the fish.  The whole movie is an adventure, supposedly, but each phase of the movie is more terrifying than the previous for a sensitive child.  Not a fan.
Fantasia
Apart from the animated sequence with Mickey as the Sorcerer's apprentice, the movie is long and boring.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
I only saw it once, and I was young.  I thought it was a good movie, but I was too young to fully understand what was happening.  I need to watch it again, as an adult.
Treasure Planet
Again, I only saw it once, but I remember enjoying it thoroughly.  However, I don't have the same emotional attachment as I do to the rest of the roster.
Frozen
I enjoyed Frozen.  It has a lot going for it.  But like the icy landscape it depicts, I feel little to no warmth towards it.  The way those parents treated Elsa, and then the way Elsa felt she had to treat Anna…it's just depressing.
Chicken Little
We are now in the territory of "I love them all, so this is the one I love less than the others".  I love Chicken Little.  I love the characters, I love the sci fi element, I love the soundtrack, and I love the father-son relationship that is at the heart of the movie.  It's just: there are so many of these movies that I love even more.
Bolt
The reason I love this movie so much is the cat character.  Her rough, tough exterior with a vulnerable side that you get to see peeking through makes her the most layered character.  And of course, the dog is cute, the girl who loves the dog is cute.  But really, I watch this movie because I love that cat.
Big Hero 6
The team coming together was awesome.  Baymax was awesome.  So many elements of this story rocked.  I love it, but only this much.
The Great Mouse Detective
I haven't seen this movie since I was little, but I clearly remember how much I loved it.  It was not terrifying, it was thrilling.  In fact, every time a story depicted rodents, for some reason I simply loved it.
The Sword in the Stone
I only remember the first half of this movie.  I remember enjoying it.  But if the ending was that forgettable, I think it deserves a lower rank on the scale.
Robin Hood
Honestly, the fact that they reused so much animation from other movies to make this one quickly irks me to the point that I cannot love it as much as it would otherwise deserve.  Marion is the best part of the movie.
The Jungle Book
This movie is good.  Unfortunately, it is a case of "the movie cannot live up to the book".  Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book is a masterpiece, and the "Disneyfied" version is entertaining to kids, but they deserve to read the book(s).
The Lion King
They say a main character is only as good as his villain.  This is not the case with The Lion King.  Scar is an amazing villain, the hyenas are amazing henchmen, Mufasa is an awesome father, Zazu, Timone and Pumbaa are such good comic relief, Rafiki is the wise advisor, and Nala is a badass love interest.  So why, Simba, are you so two-dimensional and downright dull?  The movie is good despite the main character.  He's cute when he's little though.
Peter Pan
I've never read Peter Pan, but I have seen a live action version which blew my mind.  This version came first, but the other is better.
Alice in Wonderland
Again, the book is better.  However, this time, the movie captures some of the whimsy and mood of the book, so it is redeemed.  Also the tea party scene is hysterical.
Meet the Robinsons
Again, I love this movie.  I love the family, I love the plot, the time travel element, the surprise ending, the soundtrack.  It's just not as dear to me as all the rest, so here is its place on the list.
Pocahontas
I loved this movie when I saw it as a kid.  I loved the music, I loved the suspense, I loved Pocahontas.  I only saw it once, unfortunately, so I cannot say that it is one of my top favorites.  I do want to watch it again.
Winnie the Pooh
It's a good movie, faithful to the book, and reading the book will make you enjoy the movie even more.  That's a win!
Cinderella
When the main character is the sweetest of sweethearts, and she catches the prince's attention, which means he could detect that she is one in a million.  You've got excellent taste, dear prince.
Sleeping Beauty
You know why this is above Cinderella?  The music.  The animation.  The fairies.
Dinosaur
I was blown away by the animation when I saw this movie in my youth, but watching it now, it feels like several layers are missing.  The story is compelling, and there is a variety of interesting characters.  The antagonist is so stupid, though.  It's cringe-worthy. He himself is not the problem, it's his stubborn and dogged personality that make it hard to watch the climax.  But overall it's a solid story, well told.
Tarzan
There's absolutely nothing wrong with it: it's one of my favorites.  I only wish the songs were sung by another singer, because I feel they clash with the rest of the movie.  A very personal opinion.
Hercules
You want to know the best part of this movie?  Meg.  And, next, Hades.  They are both why this movie is so high up on the list.
Aladdin
Robin Williams is the absolute best part of this movie.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Beautifully animated, and the inspiration for Cruella, which is one of my favorite movies.  Gold star.
The Rescuers
I told you, I love movies about rodents.
The Rescuers Down Under
A rare instance where the sequel was even better.
The Fox and the Hound
That one scene where the lady leaves Todd at the reserve wrecked me completely.  I cannot watch it without crying.  Not a few tears, a deluge.
Bambi
The way this movie depicts forest life using movement, color and music:  heart breaking just like Fox and the Hound, so they're close together on the list because in my mind they have similar themes.
Moana
Anything involving the ocean is awesome in my book.  Except The Little Mermaid, but that is a story about a merfolk who would prefer to be on land.  Um, no.
Raya and the Last Dragon
This movie was compelling to say the least.  And the father-daughter relationship is central to the plot, but every development in the story is thoughtful and the pacing is stellar.  I love it.
Encanto
The close-knit family, the amazing music, and the main character, Mirabel.  Disney, you knocked it out of the park.
Lady and the Tramp
"He's a tramp, but they love him.  Breaks a new heart every day.  He's a tramp.  I adore him.  And I wish that he would travel this way."  Yet this tramp met a lady who he could not ignore, not neglect, he cared about her well-being.  Isn’t that an epic storyline?
The Aristocats
Those kittens: all three are adorable.  Duchess is a quintessential lady, just like her owner.  Thomas is suave and yet he cares.  The geese are just the best.  Let's not forget the lawyer: that scene on the staircase is everything.  Edger is an idiot, but he comes by his just deserts.  And then there's Roquefort, the alley cats, Frou Frou, the two dogs.  Did I forget anybody?  Maurice Chevalier sings to opening title song, and there's a man who pours out his wine after seeing a mouse chase cats.  I think that's everybody.  What synergy this movie has.  NO wonder I love it so much.
Dumbo
I have to confess that stories about mothers and their children speak to me, move me, and reach into my chest and squeeze my heart and its strings.  And Timothy is just such a good friend!
Beauty and the Beast
Our heroine is a bookworm who is misunderstood yet beautiful so she catches the attention of a bully and a misogynist.  She sacrifices her freedom to rescue her father.  She learns that her captor has a heart.  Of all the classic "Disney princess" tales, this one is on another level.
Tangled
This is not just a run-of-the-mill love story.  The love story is amazing, don't get me wrong.  But the story is about a girl who only knows one person, and she thinks this person loves her, and wants what is best for her, but that person only cares about how she can use this girl.  It is the story of escape from an abuser.  It is a must-see Disney movie.
The Emperor's New Groove
Now this was a story where the main character is completely unlikeable in the beginning, and over the course of the movie he changes and progresses and you begin rooting for him, except, it's done right: with humor.  A lot of humor.  No room for cheesiness, the movie mocks itself, and its self-deprecation is refreshing.
Lilo and Stitch
I keep putting certain movies close to one another that have a similar emotional response from me.  Stitch is a monster.  A cute one, but he is destructive and rough.  Lilo is amazing, yet a bit bratty.  And then you find out why.  She and her sister have experienced loss, and they are coping as best they can.  With such a theme, there is nothing trite, the story doesn't gloss over the painful parts.  It is funny yet wise, over the top, yet profound.
Zootopia
A fox and a rabbit: an unlikely duo.  Yet you end up shipping them.  And the point of the story is to remind us that we should not label one another.  A vital lesson to teach our kids.
Wreck-It Ralph
And on the theme of  not judging one another, a supposed "bad guy" befriends a supposed "glitch" and hijinks ensue.  "I'm bad, but that's good, I will never be good, and that's not bad, there is no one I would rather be than me."  Gets me every time.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
I remember seeing the trailer for this film, and I could not contain my excitement.  I love drama, I love underdogs, I love overcoming prejudice.  I can watch this movie over and over.  It's a masterpiece.
Mulan
A strong female lead: one of my first encounters with this concept.  Again, I remember the trailer.  I wanted to see that movie so badly, and when I did, I was thrilled, hooked, overawed with Mulan and her courage.

How memes evolved into powerful weapons of public contempt
Modern digital environments have turned into the most powerful weapon of general contempt, with simple memes being able to sway public opinion, according to EU Reporter.
Meme war in Iran
In Iran, memes outsmart the ruling mullahs who seek to control this environment. The Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has become a meme-worthy cartoon character. Iranians turned to Instagram and Telegram to create and share satirical images of him, emphasising the ridiculousness of the government’s statements over its actions.
When the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “mistakenly” shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, the internet exploded with memes demonstrating the incompetence and deception of the Iranian government. Images of Khamenei juggling missiles labelled “oops” and recently deceased President Ebrahim Raisi attempting to repair an exploding airliner with a small band-aid spread faster than they could be blocked.
In recent weeks, a certain Twitter account has gone viral for its merciless and hilarious attacks on the Iranian leadership. TalkhandMedia has become a beacon for people willing to make a witty remark making fun of the authority.
Global meme revolution
In Venezuela, memes criticising the economic policies of President Nicolás Maduro have become a national game. As part of the online #MaduroChallenge, locals imitate his remarks and dance moves. This is an example of how humour can turn despair into collective resilience.
Amid suspicions of corruption around a luxury home in Russia, the memes “Putin quacking like a duck” and “Aquadisco” also went viral.
The image of Putin as a duck went viral on Twitter and Instagram. Similarly, in Egypt, Facebook pages such as the “Asa7be Sarcasm Society” parody President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, using satire to criticise censorship and economic policies.
In Turkey, satirical campaigns like the “TAMAM” (enough) movement have gained popularity. The memes criticise President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s too long rule. Meanwhile, in China, memes comparing President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh ingeniously avoid censorship by mocking the government’s desire for total control over every share.
Weaponisation of memes
Memes are effective, as they transform complex political criticism into accessible information to share. They ignore conventional media channels and spread like wildfire on the Internet. The humorous aspect makes them appealing, allowing people to think critically while laughing. In authoritarian societies where direct criticism is dangerous, such a form of humour provides a safe haven for dissent.
Memes have the unique ability to draw international attention to local issues. When a meme goes viral, it draws the world’s attention to injustices that no one would otherwise report. It can put more pressure on authoritarian regimes, making it harder for them to operate with impunity.

Are Owls Actually All That Wise?
Often depicted wearing glasses and graduation caps, owls are regarded as the brainiacs of the animal kingdom. While they’re not exactly dumb, they fall behind several bird species when it comes to intelligence.

For thousands of years, from Ancient Greek legend to modern literature and TV, humans have portrayed owls as sage and wise. The intelligent owl appears in everything from The Iliad to Winnie the Pooh. But, it turns out, though they’re excellent hunters, owls probably aren’t any smarter than a lot of other birds.
In fact, they may be significantly worse at problem solving than other big-brained birds like crows and parrots. One study from 2013 found that great gray owls repeatedly failed a simple cognitive test—pulling a string to get a treat—that had been successfully solved by several other bird species. It doesn’t help that owls face some steep competition in the avian class. Ravens are often ranked as one of the most intelligent non-human species along with dolphins and chimpanzees.
Owls may not be as smart as their corvid cousins, but that doesn’t make them dumb. Studies have found that some owls actually practice a primitive form of tool use. According to a study published in the scientific journal Nature, burrowing owls have been observed using animal dung to lure dung beetles to their burrows, where they subsequently feast on the insects.
However, while animal tool use is always impressive, it doesn’t really mean that owls are “wise” by any human standards. Owls are extraordinary animals in their own right. They’re incredible hunters who have evolved specialized hearing, camouflaging plumage, and unique tubular eyes that help them catch their prey.
Why Are Owls Considered Wise?
But, if owls aren’t mysterious guardians of life’s secrets, hiding deep reservoirs of wisdom behind their giant yellow eyes, then why do we so frequently represent them that way? Where does that idea come from?
While many cultures feature owls in their mythology, not all societies see owls as wise. In India, for instance, owls are associated with ill-gained wealth and foolishness rather than wisdom. The pervasive myth of the wise owl, meanwhile, likely originated with legends of the Ancient Greek goddess Athena. The goddess of wisdom, Athena was often portrayed in art holding an owl, or described in literary works as “owl-eyed” or even “owl-faced.”
Owls’ large eyes may have led to them being typecast as wise sages in literature. The bird’s striking peepers may not hold the answers to the mysteries of the universe, but they do serve a special purpose. The size enables a sort of night vision, allowing them to spot faraway prey in the dark. But the saucer-like eyes are not without their flaws. Up close, the world becomes blurry, so owls use the small, bristly feathers on their beaks and talons to feel their immediate surroundings.
Because their eyes are tubular instead of spherical—meaning they extend far back into their heads—owls can’t roll them around their sockets. Instead they have to move their entire heads to look around—which they can do 135 degrees in either direction. If you ever wondered how owls are able to pull an Exorcist without dying, you can read more about the impressive adaptation here.
