Pirates Were Not Nice- OFMD messes with our perception or real life.

DISCLAIMER: I love OFMD, but I also love learning and talking about real-life piracy, so there are a few things within this fandom space that bug me.

Ok so Anne Bonny is definitely going to be a fun, romantic and likeable lesbian in season 2 of OFMD...

BUT she was not irl, so was a pirate, so lets break it down a little bit.

Anne Bonny was a pirate and she killed for fun sometimes and she was not the fun personification of pirates we see in OFMD. Same with Blackbeard, same with irl Stede Bonnet.

It rubs me the wrong way when people start talking about these characters in real like situation, about "Oh, Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach were actually in love in real life!" "Anne Bonny and Mary Read were a lesbian power couple that plundered the seven seas together" [Anne Bonny was never a pirate captain (oddly common misconception), and both of them have lengthy list of male lovers].

We can love the show and also acknowledge that 16th century piracy was brutal and unjust, and OFMD is as far removed from what happened in real life as you can possibly be while still telling a story that vaguely resembles real-life pirates and adapts them to our modern-day world.

Ed and Stede as seen in the show can barely even be attributed to the real life Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet. They are in their entirety characters, who happen to have had some of the same experiences as their real-life counterparts.

Real life Stede Bonnet inherited owned a plantation before he abandoned his wife because he was bored and didn't like being married, and died at 30 years old after spending the majority of his already-short-lived piracy career (roughly two years) as what was effectively Blackbeard's prisoner.

Piracy was not glamorous, or fun, or happy.

Stede Bonnet was named one of the most cruel pirate captains of the Caribbean at times because of the way he treated his crew and treated his prisoners, and he was a bold pirate, yeah...

but he also sucked ass at being a pirate. He had no training as a sailor, and relied on his crew more than deemed acceptable of a real captain.

This doesn't mean he shied away from shameless murder, abandoning his crew members, etc., all things typical of a pirate captain and I see a few too many people acting as though these pirates were fun, cool people. Pirates had slaves, they killed for little reason very often, and the reason we hear about 'acceptance' for queer people, for people of colour, etc. aboard pirate ships is because pirates were desperate and took anyone they could. (Unless of course you were a woman, in which case many crews might have quickly murdered you, which might actually be a small mercy)

Piracy was dangerous; it was vile and it was cruel. The characters in OFMD are dramatized, and have far more humanity than any real pirate ever did.

it is totally okay to be hurt and tired and fed up with the american schooling system but i need you to understand that we need to be better about loudly and routinely defending public education.

yes, many teachers suck, many schools utterly suck. i also got bullied and was absolutely not given the right support for my needs. i am not defending public education because it was kind to me. i am defending it because it needs to exist.

right-wing republicans do not want an educated population. they want kids to be homeschooled or in private school. there is a huge religious undertone to this.

the most common argument is that despite high costs, the "result" is not "good" enough. they point to failing schools as proof that public education is just never going to work out. there will be arguments made here that you actually agree with: that teachers can be bullies, that we taught online for 2 years and still charged the same amount of tuition, that we have no recourse for students to actually have agency or a voice, and that schools are now unsafe for kids due to risk of illness and gun violence.

these are all placing the blame in a fraudulent way, one intended to get your parents to homeschool you. the less kids in a school, the less federally-awarded funding for that school, the less any school succeeds. they will not mention the fact it is their legislation that takes away important funding opportunities, that teachers are living at or below the poverty line, that buildings are not kept up to code, that administration is overpaid and forces specific curriculums, that corporations like (my personal enemy) Pearson Education control certain classroom goals because teachers can't afford other options. they pretend to be ignorant of the gun violence and say "oh just get a gun" - but these are the same people who will be sending their child to a private school with a bulletproof backpack. they don't care if your kid dies, though. they "don't believe" in covid, but they did get their kid vaccinated, because of course they did.

it is a closed loop. conservative parents hear the fearmongering and remove children from the system. frequently these parents are also deeply religious. the kids are raised without access to other media & learn to parrot their parents. you have now created a new generation of conservatives. additionally, one of the parents/caregivers must stay home and homeschool the children, usually for free. i will give you 1 guess which parent tends to stay home to homeschool the children. these parents are encouraged to have many, many children. those children are most likely not getting access to safe sex ed.

we might laugh at fox news suggesting teachers are forcing children to use kitty litter but: first of all, there is kitty litter in the classroom. it's part of an emergency kit in case children are locked in due to a shooter. so that's fucking dystopian, and the fact they've completely reimagined the scenario to somehow make the teachers look bad when it's instead a fucking huge symbol of our failure as a country to protect our children.... it feels a little intentional.

secondly: don't just dismiss the situation. because, yeah, obviously, no teacher is encouraging kids to be a catboy. but the actual undertone that fox news is trying to sew is an outright distrust of teachers and of public education. they rely on the dehumanization of trans people as a common touchstone to hide the fact they're pushing two agendas at once. (which is ironic. because the thing they accuse teachers of. is pushing. an agenda.)

whenever someone tells you they want you to read less, you should be suspicious of that. when someone tries to separate you and your education, you should be suspicious of that. i don't even like incel rhetoric nor would i want my kids exposed to it - but i would not take away my child's (age-appropriate) access to the internet. i would just provide more educational materials, not less. the difference here is that i believe we can resolve ignorance with knowledge; whereas conservatives believe that ignorance is bliss.

they misappropriate funding and demonize teachers. they pull the same trick each time - the same thing we are seeing with anti-trans rhetoric. they do not want you to have access to safe sex ed, so they act horrified, claim sex ed teaches you how to thrust deep, claim that we have no idea what "age-appropriate" means. since the mid-nineties, the united states has spent at least 2 billion dollars on abstinence-only education, even though to quote the above link: "a preponderance of studies has found no effect of abstinence education at reducing adolescent pregnancy". conservatives want you to think less of any person struggling with addiction so they can continue their racist "war on drugs", so they spend up to $750 million dollars a year on the DARE program which has absolutely no effect. acting like teachers "must" be "grooming" children is just the same thing - so they can demand that funding either goes to their causes or the funding doesn't "exist" ("i'm not paying for our kids to learn that thing!")

and they want you to feel uncaring about this. they are aware that you will hate some parts of your school experience. pretty much everyone does. they want to lean into the parts that you hate so that you don't put up a fight about it when they take it away for not being "good enough."

i know i maybe sound like a conspiracy theorist. but truly. truly. it is beneficial for conservatives to reduce your faith in the american public schooling system.

one of the explicitly stated campaign promises of the conservative party: to axe the Department of Education in 2024.

i know we are all tired and burnt out and there is so much else wrong with their entire platform. but maybe just - pay attention to this one.

I'm getting a cert in disability studies as part of my master's in education & doing research into the impact of the IEP/504 Plan system requiring diagnoses on undiagnosed disabled students, as part of a longer term plan for more research & eventual curriculum design for alternative ways of ensuring accommodation and accessibility that do not rely on disabilities being identified and access to diagnosis (ex: building on the existing "Universal Design for Learning" concept that's becoming more widely adopted, with more specific and disability-oriented design principles, like not having due dates or required days of attendance).

I'm also really, really not the only one. this specific work is niche and may not even end up being my focus ultimately (I'm just barely getting started!), but it's work that builds on what other people have been doing, and are doing, to address the absolutely fucking dismal state of how disabled students are treated in education.

Special Ed specifically is a fucking nightmare for a lot of reasons, and I have enough personal experience with that to be pretty motivated to address it in whatever ways I can.

just to make sure we are all on the same page in this corner of the internet, i want to be explicitly clear about my stance/feelings on some things:

if i come across "content"/fic in this niche that i absolutely do not like, do not vibe with, am not interested in, that icks me out completely and totally—i scroll past it as quickly as i can and i move on with my day.

in the case that it's "content"/fic that really bothers or triggers me in any way, i make sure that i have blacklisted/blocked certain tags and keywords so that in the future i may not come across those things again.

I still think it's really crazy that Horikoshi did Midoriya so dirty by having him murder the boy he wanted to save, and, now that he's lost his Quirk, is stuck being lonely for like eight years feeling like a husk of his former self, only feeling like himself again when he gets an Iron Man suit. as a dekuhead, i agree that killing shigaraki was confusing and i still don't know what the thought process is behind that. like, saving him has always been deku's plan and everything was pointing towards shigaraki rehabilitation but then ... we didn't get it???

so yes, shigaraki should have lived (it aligns with deku's goals and the narrative's goals) and toga also should have lived for similar reasons. i also agree that deku's conclusion should have been expanded upon more — i really wanted to see how killing shigaraki, losing his quirk, etc. truly affected deku, and we were kinda left hanging. but also i sorta just equate that with lack of time / horikoshi being rushed to finish his manga

but i fundamentally disagree with the rest of your ask. it feels like you've developed this opinion based on the 430 leaks and not the actual official chapter; it's just misleading. which i don't blame you for, because the mha leaks scene is fucking awful and has ruined an entire reader base's reading comprehension, which has consequently been perpetuated by the fandom

it's not stated if he feels like a husk of his former self or not. he lost his quirk, true, but he verbally says he's ok with it (ofa was like a dream that he got to live out), and never shows that he's particularly depressed or upset about being quirkless again. i feel like this specific idea is very fandom-coded. everyone was drawing deku sad as fuck for losing his quirk but canonically he appears at most wistful, and normally just neutral. it is what it is, yknow? after all he says himself that he was originally quirkless anyway, so not much has changed.

also he mentions feeling lonely, but i hate this idea that deku has been lonely for 8 straight years. people have twisted this into meaning his friends ghosted him after high school, but like ... how would that even make sense. deku's friends love him so much, will fight at the world's end with him, and he changed their lives for the better. they would absolutely not ghost him. they just canonically don't meet up much anymore, because OBVIOUSLY, when you don't live in the same building as your high school classmates anymore you are NOT going to meet up as much as before. this is just how adulting is. you have responsibilities and jobs and lives now. people hate to hear it but it's the most realistic part of this ending.

again, we have no idea if deku didn't "feel like himself" when he was just teaching. and this idea that he's not is fueled in some weird anti-teacher belief that i'm seeing a lot of, now that deku pursued education in his future. in my opinion teaching is a very fitting career for him; he's been inspiring and helping his classmates as a student, and he loves quirk analysis and gushing to others about their quirks.

he's literally training a new generation of heroes, he gets to work alongside pros (such as aizawa), he's constantly learning more about new quirks ... why is this not the deku we've known and loved? what about this feels wrong? just because he's not a stereotypical hero on the scene, he's suddenly a worse version of himself?

mha has drilled into our heads so much atp that being quirkless doesn't mean you can't be a hero. deku was quirkless his whole life but he had the spirit of a hero, and even when other heroes quit during the apocalyptic era between wars, deku was still out there, doing what he could. he didn't need the money. he didn't need the fame. he didn't need the recognition or the credit, even. he just wanted to help people. and being a teacher is one of THE most directly helpful jobs you could take.

from what i can tell, people who complained about teacher deku and "peaking during high school" and "working a dead-end minimum wage job" were all from the western fandom. i have not seen a single japanese fan complain to this degree. it's definitely a cultural difference but also i think they just read better than us. UA is a prestigious school with crazy name recognition and all teachers there are registered pro heroes. even though deku isn't technically a pro, they recognized him as one anyway, which allowed him to work there in the first place. like hello. over everything we should be grateful he didn't become a cop.

the way i interpreted him getting his suit was that

his friends love him so much they pooled their money all in secret just to give him another chance at actual hero work, even though they know deku's content with his teaching job. probably also so they can see him more, now that their schedules might align better

even though he's quirkless, he is still symbolically — and literally — a hero. turning society's preconceived opinions of quirkless people on its head

it had nothing to do with making him feel like himself again. he was doing fine. the suit is just a (very expensive, labor of love) perk.

and before anyone complains about him "receiving handouts" and that "he just lazed around for years until his friends picked him back up with the suit", SHUT THE FUCK UP. he's done so much for them that they felt it right to return the favor, especially to the one guy they know who earned it the most. also - he deserved a break from all of the shit he went through; why should it Not take him 8 years? do you KNOW how much pain he suffered? that amount of trauma lasts a lifetime. all of you SHUT UP.

as a dekuhead, i think his conclusion as a teacher who also works as a pro hero is awesome and cool and i see no qualms with that. my main concern is that we should've gotten more of a conclusion to deku's ARC and its connection to the story, but regarding his future 8 years later i'm totally fine with it. he's living out his dreams, working with heroes, studying quirks, and keeping in touch with the ones he loves. that is epic as hell

I had breast reduction surgery like two weeks ago and I've been having some small yellow leaking with no pain or odor, and I've read it's supposed to be like liquified fat, but it's still kinda scary (Dr knows this happened but didn't really say anything about it—)

Nope!! But it IS normal. Tons of the ppl in the breast surgery group I'm in have had the exact same thing! It's just drainage. I don't know if it's fat, or lymphatic fluid, but this is exactly what would be siphoning out of your boobs if you had drains put in! I didn't have drains, and I was sewn together pretty tight / I closed up fast, so I didn't have anyplace for it to drain, lol, my boobs just FILLED UP for like the first week before my body processed it all internally. anyway. you're all good!! it's not infected, if that's what you're worried about. You'll be going through a lot of gauze while this sorts itself out. EDIT: also congrats on your reduction!!!!! 🎉🎉 EDIT EDIT: If your doc didn't already give you Goo instructions, I was given a lot of goos to put on my incisions, and this is the one they gave me to use for the first 5 weeks. It might help you Close Up a little quicker!
