“Feel free to share your positive feelings about the film on Twitter after the screening,” said the usher introducing the London press preview screening of Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s Mattel-produced film. The embargo for reviews, however, would not be lifted until two days later, closer to the film’s release. The audience generally didn’t bat an eyelid and it wasn’t the first time my colleagues and I had heard such directives, yet we were left feeling censored: if they won’t allow for our negative reactions, why should they get our positive ones?
The purpose of this strategy barely needs specifying: in addition to the film’s omnipresent marketing campaign, positive reactions on social media were to seal the deal and ensure that the most dubious potential spectators would be persuaded to turn up to the cinema on the opening weekend, the most crucial days for a film’s box office success. The fact that the audience at this preview screening consisted mostly of influencers was another blatant marketing strategy, which would not have been as insulting were it not for the fact that it meant many film critics were unable to see the film before its release. The phenomenon occurred in other cities as well. A few days before the film’s release, Parisian writers were dumbfounded to see some colleagues sharing glowing takes on the film on Twitter, after being told there would be no advance screenings for any of the press. Moreover, what were presented as exclusive interviews with the cast turned out to be prerecorded and pre-approved by the studio. Ahead of its release, the film was to be seen only through pink-tinted glasses.
While it is customary for film studios to try to control the narrative by organising advance screenings if they believe in a film or avoiding them if they don’t, the methods employed for the release of Barbie were more extreme. They are symptomatic of a trend that has been evolving over the past few years and that concerns not only the film criticism profession, but culture at large. If all discussion of a film’s merits before release is left to influencers, whose driving ambition is to receive free merchandise by speaking well of the studio’s products, what can we expect the film landscape to look like? Where will engaging, challenging and, if not completely unbiased then at least impartial conversation about cinema take place, and how is the audience to think critically of what is being sold to it?

Memories of the factory you once worked in, came back to you in your dreams. Some were pleasant memories while others were nightmares. Most of them were not that detailed only snippets of faces of other workers and…. Toys?
But they were only three memories that we’re still deep in your mind clear as day I was a good movie you always remembered since you were a kid.
The first thing was your first day at work at the toy factory. The way everything looks how crowded it was.Hundreds of families and kids. People coming in to see the factory some coming in for work. While coming in for a good time to spend the day.The way everything looks so colorful, so alive something coming out of a child’s imagination. It felt so comforting at the same time so strange and ominous. Remembering, the way you looked at everything as if you were a kid on Christmas. The way the factories work the mass production Agreed to tours of people. How ever bit of the factory it was covered in something colorful. From few building blocks on the floor to a few pictures of the mascots on the walls. Everything looking so child like at the same time so efficient .
The second memory, being a tall figures, some rounded, fluffy or others made out of plastic. You didn’t really remember what most of them looks like, but they look like stuffed animals. Remembering the voice of one of the characters. One voice happy to see everyone at the same time, caring and thoughtful to others. Remembering that they had a smile on their face, but it wasn’t forced. It looks like a genuine smile, but the same time you couldn’t remember most of the things they had. As well as the nicknames they called you.
Angle-
The last memory was something, not so happy and joyful. Unlike the other two it was something more terrifying, more horrific some thing that almost looks like to be out of a horror film. Creatures that look cute and cartoony being treated like animals. Put in cages being electrocuted with sticks. Some were strap down on tables as the creature yelled out screeching in pain. As groups of people in white coats would go around them with tools that must doctors would use.You remember the pain you had inside yourself as you watch. The wanted to help you wanted to do something but you couldn’t. Your fear took you over over as you just stand there chained to the wall and watch. Until you were able to get a bit of strength to force yourself to get out and away from there.
The only other think you remembers were in snipers but you knew it was all together. What sounded like an amalgamation of voices. Female, male, monstrous, childlike. All put together into a single entity.
How it called out to you. Telling you to open the door to
HELP
to
LET IT OUT
to
LET THEM OUT.
After that, all you remember was a big hand that looks to be something made out of thin metal needles crawl out in front of you before you heard a faint
Thank you
Then it blacked out.

***Spoilers ahead!!!***
Note: this is just a general summary of what has happened so far and my initial reactions to those major events. I focused my comments on whatever interests me the most (ie lore and funny character interactions), so there are definitely details that were overlooked and lines that were simplified to make a joke; please do not rely on this as a translation.
Big thanks to @shuuenmei and @curekibouka-writing for clarifying the more confusing tracks of the story (some parts were difficult to follow the sequence of events for) and the details of the✨ deep lore ✨ It was fun screaming with the both of you—
Ah yes, Yuu’s Sleeping Beauty dream right on cue. Finally starting to put together the puzzle pieces, huh (Yuu goes to check on the Great Seven statues to confirm they saw the Fairy of Thorns in their dreams)? About time—
As expected, Sebek loses his mind and tells Yuu to not abuse Malleus’s kindness. He’s also super pissed that Malleus and Yuu act familiar with each other (and over the nickname). Yup, that interaction went about as well as we all predicted…
Not Lilia being the “I’m an anime boy late for anime school (the internship meeting)!” trope 😂 All he needs is some toast in his mouth!
Crowley talks about boring things how the internships will work and we hear more about the areas of interest for the third years.
Lore ✨ Each internship “semester” is 3 months and you can only take certain internships if you qualify for them via your grades, credits, and electives. You can choose to do 3 separate internships (again, 3 months each) or do 1 internship (for all 9 months). A B or higher is needed on two of the “semesters” to graduate. Students must also submit reports each semester. Some places additionally require interviews and/or special tests to be passed before a student is accepted as an intern. Placements are not first-come, first-serve; you need to earn that spot.
Trey says he wants to do something related to pastries or agriculture; basically, things close to food production 🌾 He wants to take advantage of his opportunities as an NRC student while he still can!! Trey said he wants to work right after school rather than go to university.
Cater is interested in the entertainment industry; he mentions magazines and videos?? It seems he isn’t interested in higher education.
HELP they randomly mention that Ace’s older brother interned in the entertainment industry too (it gets brought up when Cater was considering a theme park for his own internship)??? TRAPPOLA NII ALSO CURRENTLY WORKS IN ENTERTAINMENT????? When do we get to meet him, Ace—
Vil is continuing to advance his own career in film. He already picked out a studio to apply for, and expresses an interest in magical pharmaceuticals (though he doesn’t intend on going to college). Very fitting specialties for everyone, I must say!
Rook is interested in archeology so he can learn more about the world! After learning about S.T.Y.X., he realizes there’s so much more he doesn’t yet know. According to Trey, Rook does appear to intend to pursue college/higher level studies.
LMAO at Trey constantly having to translate Rook-isms for everyone 😂 Classic Science Club…
Unca Weona is cwanky cuz the talking is disturbing his nappy—
Leona’s going to a mining and energy facility in his home country. It’s an option offered only to those with high grades. Leona wants to be a lazy ass 🦁 “They won’t fail their prince, lmao”
Idia is doing an software engineering internship at Olympus Corp (ie TWST Google) 👀 This is huge because back at the end of episode 5 (ie the episode 6 preview), Idia was actively rejecting offers from Olympus Corp, claiming that he wasn’t welcome anywhere. Character growth… Idia isn’t welcome back at S.T.Y.X. because of the Overblotting and how it nearly exposed the organization to the public eye LOL 😂 Absentee Shroud parents upset with him cksbskwbkcnfke
Malleus doesn’t seem to be interested in picking an internship; he says that, to him, 3 months is too short a time to really learn anything (temporal dissonance strikes again). In the end, he is going to research historical ruins?? He can hang out with the Gargoyles 😎 and Rollo/j
BRO WHAT ???? Lilia is dropping out of NRC??? THE FUQ,,,,!.’sveksbskebkzvczbvvv?$$$&85inmw I had to hard stop at this scene because it caught me by surprise.
The first years are talking about Mickey (like if there are certain conditions to get him to appear??). Oh god, they're planning a Mickey Mouse stakeout????? AND ORTHO IS INCLUDED IN THE GROUP AWWWW 🥺 He searches his databases and uses his cool robot tech to look for more information about Mickey but finds nothing.
GRIM MAKES A SUS COMMENT ABOUT HOW ORTHO IS MORE HELPFUL WITH THIS (Mickey and Yuu's worlds perhaps being tied or related to one another) THAN CROWLEY IS.
They overhear Sebek shouting in the cafeteria; he’s in disbelief that Lilia is dropping out of school.
So anyway, Lilia’s magic has, in fact, weakened significantly (he was almost late for the internship meeting because he woke up and found that he couldn't teleport). He plans on retiring in the Land of the Crimson Dragon (Mushu???? IS THAT YOU).
Interesting??? It seems that Lilia has been progressively losing his powers since even before Sebek and Silver were born… It’s not a super recent occurrence.
Sebek and Silver are understandably upset and mention that while it would be easy for either of them to visit Lilia, it would be almost impossible for Malleus because he will be so inundated with his royal duties after graduation. Malleus is distraught as well, but he insists that they respect Lilia's decision. AND HE’S LEAVING IN LIKE A WEEK? That’s barely enough time to mourn or to emotionally prepare for the fallout…
Malleus pitches an idea to talk to his grandma to not overwork Lilia (vice dorm leaders being overworked? What? In this game? Nooooooo/s).
Malleus's grandma is name-dropped (Maleficia)??? Is everyone in the Draconia family just Mal-something????
LOTS OF OMINOUS DIALOGUE ("Time is running out", "Fate cannot be defied", etc.)
After that whole conversation it’s clear that something isn’t right (despite Malleus maintaining his calm in front of Diasomnia). As soon as he’s away from them, the weather instantly turns stormy AND we see Malleus's blot accumulating as early as 7-13 in what I assume will be a very meaty episode.
Sebek and Silver help Lilia pack; Silver finds this tin in Lilia’s room. There is an old bracelet of acorns and thread inside.
Lilia shows up and says that it’s the most precious item he’s ever been gifted??? But it’s not clear who it’s from.
Tumblr media
There's another item in the tin (the ring on a chain)! It has a weird effect on Silver?? I think it makes him sleepy???
The gem in the ring is the same color as Silver’s eyes; Lilia thinks its because his parents wanted his eyes to be forever unclouded and pure 🤨 That’s cute and all, but it makes me really suspicious that something super bad will happen later and I’m living for that—
This ring was tied to baby Silver when Lilia found him. He planned on gifting it to Silver when he's finally an adult... and now is that time 😭 Ain’t no way they’re giving us these heartfelt moments only to not tear it down later with something devastating… And?? With the ring being so fancy, there’s no way Silver isn’t descended from some rich family (or even royalty/nobility) himself??? Prince Silver real????/j cuz that ring sure does look like Princess Aurora’s crown…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sebek pulls up with THIS fucking monstrosity?? It’s a weapon (axe???) Lilia used from back in the day (like, in war). However, nowadays he uses it to chop regular shit like wood. The weapon looks very similar to one that Maleficent’s minions use.
It's made out of a special magical ore! It’s called Mystium, and it changes shape according to the wielder’s magic.
Tumblr media
Back to Yuu and co. staking out Mickey! Grim is finally realizing that if Yuu goes home, he’ll be alone 😔 Noooo, fur baby… Don’t be sad..
They wait for a while but get sleepy because Mickey is taking forever to appear. When Yuu wakes up, they see Malleus’s green lights and they go outside to find it’s snowing (again, because of his weird mood). He apologizes and makes the snow vanish, then confides in Yuu about his insecurities.
Malleus tells a story about how he froze the castle and some people when he was a little kid (omg Elsa core???) because because his grandma had promised to eat with him and was late or didn’t show up due to her royal duties keeping her busy. It sounds like even the palace servants were afraid of his power because of incidents like this. Like. It’s kind of implied Malleus almost killed them (Lilia says Malleus almost “lost” those people) with his magic.
Lilia was the only one who came for Malleus to check on him when he was upset, dried his tears, and tried to understand him. He comes over and frees the people that Malleus froze, then everyone starts preparing and eating shaved ice made from the ice encasing the castle (not randomly, I think it was Lilia’s suggestion).
Malleus gets jealous because he saw everyone enjoying food without him and/or he thought Lilia was angry at him. (This is the point when Lilia tells him he has great power so he has to be careful how he uses it, ie the “you almost lost the people that you’re now happily eating with at the hands of your own magic” talk.)
Lilia uses his weapon to make some shaved ice for Malleus and invited him to join in (I think this may be the same weapon Sebek finds in his room in the present???); this helped Malleus “connect” with other people, or at least invited him to join and do the same thing the others were) It’s because of Lilia that Malleus is okay with eating cold things. UM???? HELLO???? Is that why Malleus’s favorite food is ice-cream??? Or at least a part of it?
BTW LONG HAir PONYtAIL LILiA CANON yes I’m way more excited about this than I was about that entire ice story
Tumblr media
Yuu calls Malleus lonely 💀 and Malleus is shocked because he’s so used to being alone that the thought never occurred to him…
Oh no, Malleus learned that Yuu has “found a way home” (ie Rickey Rat hunting) 🙃 he’s like. “You are leaving me as well?” AND RIGHT AFTER HE JUST LEARNED ABOUT LILIA GOING… Lilia, who has been with Malleus ever since he hatched from his egg…
Friends, family… everything and everyone he cherishes is leaving Malleus. “Even if I have great power, I have nothing. I gain nothing, I always lose. No one will invite me, not anymore.” No Lilia, No Yuu 😞 Malleus, your abandonment issues are showing—
NAUUUR not more ominous shit 😭 Not the “man, I sure do wish everyone wouldn’t go :(((( if only there was a way for me to have everything I want…” coming from the mouth of a super insanely powerful magician…
NOOOOO not Yuu unintentionally enabling Malleus… He asks if there was a way to be with your loved ones forever, would Yuu take it?????? YUU DOnT SAy YES YOU FUQQinG IDIOT… ENABLER Yuu didn’t learn from Trey/j
MaLLEUS MY duDE 😔 DOn’T PULL ANY STUPID ShIT PLEASE (ie we all know he probably will)
Aaaand that’s all for now, folks!! Lots of sketchy lines and lore centering around grandpappy Lilia 🤡
Overall, I like the direction episode 7 is going so far! I was really worried that it would focus too much on Yuu and Malleus’s relationship rather than elaborating on Malleus’s relationships with the rest of Diasomnia, but I’m glad that the main story actually touches upon how integral Lilia is to his found family—and to Malleus, of course. A lot of interesting plot points have been set up (especially surrounding Mickey and Lilia), and I’m really looking forward to seeing how those conclude 👀 I feel like we also got spoiled with character lore; I love that time is a Real Thing in TWST and the the boys are aging and thinking hard about their futures. Can’t wait for the angst to hit me full force like a truck 💕

Time the Series - Episode 1
Another time traveling show. This time by expectations are basically on the floor.
So before I say anything here's the official synopsis: Foam, a famous actor, saw Chris, the lover, killed in front of him by the police. But fate gives Foam a chance to go back and correct the past for what he did wrong, causing Chris's death. When a mysterious man gives a clock that can travel back in time to Foam, will Foam be able to fix the past and save a lover's life? Only time will prove it! MDL You can watch it on YT, Gaga. Uncut on WeTV.
I watch the cut version, if anyone watches the full version please let me know what I missed. Not that I'm all that invested but still. This is basically a "I watched it so you don't have to" type of review so obviously, all spoilers from here on. Skip to the end for my short review.
We begin with a police chase that ends with Chris being caught but then there's a sniper and he gets shot. Very exciting already.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cut to Foam waking up in bed and promptly pouring himself red wine while he cries and reflects on his lost love. Warning for singing and guitar playing in flashback.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day he's passed out and won't answer his phone and everyone is very upset, cause he's an actor and there's a lot of people waiting for him to shoot a commercial. There's already a war of managers happening btw. The one in pink is Foam's manager, the other one wants to be his manager. I'll be calling her the bad manager from here on for reasons which will become obvious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So eventually he arrives and they shoot a commercial for some skin product that is amazing for the skin if we believe the people that show up to help Foam with his lines, cause the boy is struggling.
And apparently it's his birthday and he makes the weirdest call to his mum to ask her to wish happy birthday and the subs have the mom saying "Hello, dear" but there's actually no sound from the other side of the conversation. Amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this the drama really begins. And I mean there's so much happening and none of it is good.
So really quickly: - Birthday party where Foam is the DJ and there is some really bad dance acting happening. - The bad manager drugs Foam and assaults him and is interrupted by the good manager. - The two managers insult each other in front of passed out Foam and a physical fight ensues. Slap, screaming, slap, insult, slap, begging, more slapping. This is all very dramatic btw, almost lakorn level dramatic. Glass on the floor, bad manager picks it up and stabs the good manager. - Bad manager's bodyguards take her and Foam wakes up with the bloody glass shard on his hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Panic sets in, everyone comes and for some reason some dude is filming this whole thing. And we get our second police chase of the episode. This time Foam is the one doing the running.
Foam hides in a dark ally where he meets a stranger with a shining pink necklace that invites him to his place and of course he goes, because why not?
Then he recognizes the necklace/watch because he gave his boyfriend one that looks exactly like it. And then this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guy in alley - gives Foam pink shiny watch - dead boyfriend appears.
They immediately jump each other, as you do when all of a sudden your dead boyfriend is in front of you again, and Foam wakes up thinking it was all a dream. But was it? I have no idea.
Foam wakes up, hits himself, hurts himself and wonders why he's in his old apartment. He goes outside and it's five years before Chris died. The end.
So... to recap. I don't even know what to say. This is from MFlow, the same company that brought us the mess that was Beyond The Star so my expectations were really low.
With that said, I can't in good conscience tell any of you to watch this. It's not good. From the previews it seems Foam is going to meet Chris all over again except he won't remember him. Fun times all over again. I'll be honest. I probably won't be watching this, but come next tuesday if I have nothing better to do I might check it out. Depends how much I remember the experience and how curious I get about how they will deal with the time traveling. I obviously have not learned my lesson.
If anyone watches it please let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading.💜

He just shrugged. “Told you, nervous about the intimate scenes.”  “I thought we went over this this morning?” she questioned. “And that last one was so good!” The complement tickled a spot inside of him. “From where I was standing it looked completely real. Totally reminded me of this time with...” she drifted off, blush arriving back to her cheeks as she took a bite of her sandwich to cover. “Anyway...”  “No,” Harry said softly. “Tell me. Who was it and what was he doing?” “You don’t want to hear about that H,” she insisted, taking another bite.  If only she knew. “Yeah, I do. Tell me.”  “Will it... is it gonna help you with your next scene? To hear about what it looks like from the other perspective?”
Read below or on AO3 or Wattpad
Harry had been in movies before, sure. He’d had plenty of lead roles, already won lots of awards and was nominated for several Oscars (although he never won those). But he had never been this nervous about shooting a movie, or in particular, some scenes in a movie. This is what he does for goodness sake. He’s a movie star, he’s famous, he walks red carpets and acts in films with giant budgets and big name directors and famous casts.
But he’d never filmed a sex scene before.
And objectively, he knew it was fake. He knew the intimacy coordinator was good at her job, the set would be cleared except for essential personnel, he and his co-star would both be wearing modesty garments and barriers and the whole thing would be entirely professional.
But it was still a sex scene.
That morning before the first of the intimate scenes was to be shot, he was pacing in his trailer. Everyone in the world would know what he looked like when he did that. They would know what his face looked like (or what he thinks his face probably looks like - honestly he isn’t usually paying that much attention to his expression in the moment) when he hits his high. He’s kissed on screen before, sure. Who hasn’t in this business? But something about this just felt different.
Obviously, he knew what he was signing up for when he agreed to shoot the movie. And he knew that if he had a problem with something, the producers wanted him so badly for the part that they would happily adjust the script. But Harry agreed that it was there for a reason and the screenwriter wouldn’t have just added those scenes in for fun. They served a purpose, they showed character development, they moved the story forward.
He brushed his hair back with one hand, the other firmly on his hip as he continued to pace. It wasn’t that he wanted to get out of it, either. He wanted to do it. He was just nervous. And Harry Styles? Nervous to shoot a movie? That sounded impossible, even to him. He was chewing on his bottom lip, nearly making it bleed before remembering there would be close ups of his face and lips during these scenes and unless he wanted to be caked with makeup he had to stop it.
The soft knock at his door came right on time. Y/N, his production assistant was there to tell him that he was needed on set. And he had never felt less ready.
“H?” she called out, opening the door slowly after he didn’t answer her knock.
“Yeah... yeah... I’ll be right there. Just... just gotta.. Um...” he looked around the room for an excuse of why he needed more time, of why he was so jittery, of why it wasn’t time for him to be on set yet. But he came up empty.
Y/N let the door close behind her and she walked up to where Harry was standing, finally not pacing any longer but instead bouncing his leg incessantly.
“Harry,” she said quietly, almost in a whisper as she placed her hand on his shoulder. He let out a deep breath, finally allowing some portion of himself to relax as he looked up at her. “What’s going on? Why are you acting like this?”
The look in her eyes was so gentle and wholesome, and he almost didn’t want to admit what it was because he had grown to see her as rather socially innocent. She was plenty experienced with her job, and had even been his assistant on other movies before. But she was often quiet and shy when it came to new people, or people at all unless she had a reason to talk to them.
The first time they had met, a couple of years ago now on a movie back when he was still auditioning for roles, he was convinced she didn’t like him because she never said anything to him unless it was about business or getting him to set on time. He soon learned that was just how she was. Occasionally he got her to open up a bit, they would chat over lunch from time to time and she would chuckle at his bad jokes when he was trying to break the tension of a dark scene. But overall she was quiet, and he had learned that she was very particular with who she got close to. He felt incredibly lucky that she so often showed that she cared about him.
“It's uh... um the...” he hesitated some more. But when she cocked her head to the side questioningly, he couldn’t help but let the words spill out. “I’ve never done these intimate scenes, y’know? And like... I know it’s all super professional but I’m nervous. Everyone is gonna see how I do certain things and what if I do it wrong? What if I’m actually bad at it?”
Y/N let her hand drop down his arm before resting at her side as she smiled at him softly, her eyes reflecting the lights above her and almost sparkling.
“H, we both know you aren’t bad at it.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“I mean... I mean I don’t know. But how many other movie stars do you have to hook up with before there would start to be rumors, hm? And the only rumors I’ve heard about you have been... really good,” she admitted.
“You’ve heard rumors about me?”
Y/N blushed then, looking away from him.
“Uh... yeah I mean... yeah.”
It was impossible not to wonder what exactly it was that she had heard. He wanted to know desperately what was going through her mind about him that made her blush so hard. But he knew better than to ask. She wasn’t one to divulge anything she didn’t intend to, and if she intended to, she would have already. Still, the idea that she had heard something about him in bed made him feel... something. He wasn’t sure what, but it was definitely something.
“But my point is-” she refocused them both, looking back at him. “You’re going to be fine. Anna is one of the best intimacy coordinators in the business, and she’s going to make sure everything is comfortable and safe, and all you have to do is what you do best.”
Y/N always gave the best pep speeches. Usually Harry only needed them when there was a big action scene coming up, or maybe on his first day, or maybe she would say something sweet and slightly emotional before their last day together on set, never knowing if they would get to work together again. But whatever the reason, her words always did exactly what he needed them to do in that moment.
“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, mostly to himself. “I’m just doing my job. I’m just acting. The rest is going to be fine. I have nothing to worry about.”
“Exactly!”
Y/N sighed with relief as Harry looked back at her with a slight smile. He still felt uncomfortable, and he knew it was plastered all over his face. But she was great at pretending it wasn’t and hyping him up anyway.
“The first few scenes are just kissing anyway, and you’ve done that loads of times. The morning is really just a warm up, right? You work so well with Florence anyway, this will be a breeze, I promise.”
And when she promised, Harry really believed it.
At least he did at first. But when the hours wore on and the kissing scenes turned into makeout scenes which turned into running his hands all over her body which turned into falling into bed together which turned into eating her out on the table... he was struggling.
They called to cut the scene when it was clear that Harry was uncomfortable between his costar’s legs. With a pout on his face, Harry walked over to Y/N and took the water bottle she was handing to him. He drank a bit and she stood there wordlessly, yet still somehow supportive. Her presence always made him relax a little.
“Was it that bad?” he finally asked, quietly so the rest of the crew couldn't hear him.
“No, I don’t think so,” she answered with a shrug. She paused for a moment, clearly thinking over her next words. She only ever said what was necessary and wasn’t one to ramble. “I think you’re thinking about it too much.”
Harry really did value Y/N’s opinions on these things, so he tried to process what he could be doing differently. She had worked on so many amazing films and seen so many fantastic actors work on their craft. Most of the time her feedback was more valuable than the director’s. Directors and producers were so insulated into this business they often lost sight of what people actually wanted to see.
He had been following the direction he was given - he was supposed to be completely enamored by Florence, horny beyond belief, and so in love. He was supposed to love the power had over her by performing these acts, and get off on the way she looked while he was doing it. And he was playing to those notes, wasn’t he? At least he thought he was. Thinking back, he could pinpoint the look he was going for, the expression he wanted on his face, the speed of his movements -
“Like that-” she cut him off from his train of thoughts. “Right now, you’re thinking about thinking about thinking. It’s too much. You need to relax.”
He furrowed his brows, still looking at her as he twisted the cap back onto his water, but not saying anything.
“Like, it needs to look like you’re actually doing it, right? And when you’re actually doing it the worst is when you’re in the moment and your partner is overthinking it, right? So if you want it to look good, you can’t do the exact thing that makes the real thing bad.”
Her advice made sense... a lot of sense actually. But he wasn’t really thinking about her advice anymore as much as he was thinking about her statement which kind of threw in his face that oh yeah, Y/N has had someone eat her out before and that’s why she knows this.
He shouldn’t be thinking about her in that way, he knows that of course. But it was like some kind of reflex that he couldn’t turn off. She just always seemed so soft and gentle and the idea of Y/N in sexual situations like that... well he used to not be able to picture her like that (not that he ever tried). But after getting to know her better he realized that she was hiding some naughty things behind those kind eyes.
Before Harry could say anything else, the director called the cast to set themselves to reshoot the scene again. He smiled at Y/N in thanks as he handed the water back to her and took his place in front of the table, Florence sitting on it with open legs.
And he realized in that moment how weird it was that literally pretending to eat out his co-star didn’t get him worked up at all but the slight suggestion that maybe Y/N had done something like this before in real life made his insides all twisty and turny. But he tried to take her advice and not think too far into it.
Florence smiled at him, and they talked with Anna about their new strategy. She would grab his hair and help direct him, and he would bury his face as close as he reasonably could so it looked believable from afar. He closed his eyes as they did a practice round. Instead of thinking about how his head looks, how his forehead looks, how his movements look, how close he was getting to Florence, trying to stay professional in the setting, he was imagining there was actually someone undressed in front of him. That he was actually lapping at their folds and tasting their sweet juices and nipping at her inner thighs every once in a while just to get a reaction. And her moans would be high pitched and soft, like she was afraid to let them out. And he would suck her clit as he started using his fingers too. And Y/N would be so tight and warm and wet and he would moan around her most sensitive spot letting the vibrations help her out as well. And when Y/N finally came, he would lick it all up until she was so sensitive she was pushing him away.
And then he stood up. The run through, done. He felt like his face should be wet, and subconsciously wiped it with the back of his hand (though he only removed some makeup). And he looked over to Y/N off to the side, still holding his water, and that’s when he realized that his imaginary girl had somehow become Y/N without him even noticing. And he started to blush at the thought, grateful that she didn’t have to know.
“Oh don’t get shy on me now, Styles. That was the best one yet!” Florence teased him from her spot on the table.
He looked back at her, smiling as he tried to shake off his thoughts. But then again, if this was the best one yet, maybe he didn’t want to shake off those thoughts completely? Maybe they would be useful. No one ever had to know what he was thinking about during filming, it was fine.
So when the director called to start shooting the scene again, Harry really went for it. He didn’t think about what he was doing or what he looked like or how it would look on camera. He just thought about Y/N sitting there on the table in front of him, bare and exposed for him to pleasure her. He would make her feel so good, she wouldn’t know what to do with herself. That soft, sweet voice would make the dirtiest sounds he had ever heard. Maybe, if he was lucky, he would coerce her into saying his name through a moan. The idea of that alone got him chubbed up a bit. She probably tasted amazing, and he would use every skill he had ever learned to make her feel as amazing as possible. The sensations would be so good that she would involuntarily throw her head back, squeeze his hair tight, and let out a groan as he tasted her beautiful arousal.
And then the director called a cut.
Harry stood up as Florence’s grip on his hair relaxed, and he found himself breathing heavily even though he hadn’t really been doing much of anything. He wasn’t as out of breath as he usually found himself after the real thing, but it was still notable.
“I think we got it!” he called out. “Time for lunch.”
At first, Harry was relieved to go to lunch, to get a break from shooting these scenes, to go back to his trailer and sit down. Maybe he would get a moment to be with Y/N and chat about something normal.
Y/N.
Shit.
He knew he was blushing when he mumbled his lunch order to her because not only could he feel the heat rising to his face, but she looked at him pretty curiously but never asked him a question. When she walked away to pick up their meals he let out a deep breath, heading to his trailer afterwards.
All day he had thought that the room they were in was kept warm to help deal with the fact that they were fairly exposed. But it turned out when he opened the door to go outside, a wall of heat and humidity hit his skin. By the time he made it back to his trailer (where he thankfully left the A/C on by accident that morning) he was sticky and gross.
Immediately he peeled off his costume of a long sleeve shirt and pants, leaving him in only his boxers to cool down. He sat on the makeshift couch and spread out his arms along the back of it. Letting his head rest on the back, he relaxed into the cushions and closed his eyes for a moment.
His nerves that morning were somewhat gone, but they were replaced by a new uneasy feeling. He was able to do his job, but only by imagining his coworker and friend was there in front of him. Only by thinking about her naked body and the sounds he hoped she would make. Only by picturing what she would look like where he now realized he wanted her most.
He couldn’t get too deep into his thoughts about her though, because pretty soon Y/N was back with both of their lunches. It was sandwich day and they both chose the vegetarian option with a side of potato chips. She placed his lunch down on the table in front of him and then started heading back to the door before he stopped her.
“Wait, don’t you want to eat lunch with me?”
“Oh,” she turned around to look at him. “I figured with everything from this morning, and you’re not wearing your clothes... thought you might want to be alone.”
He shook his head. “Would much rather be with you, darling. Promise.”
Her face lit up then as she practically skipped back to the chair on the other side of the table from the couch he was already sitting on.
“Was hoping you’d say something like that, actually,” she said gleefully as she started to unpack her own lunch.
“Thanks again for your advice on set earlier. Think you know more about cinema than the directors sometimes,” he said with a smile.
“I’ll always help you with whatever you need, you know Harry,” she responded with a smile. But she quickly changed the subject. “I overheard something funny from one of the other assistants today!”
Innocent as she was, she was still always ready to share gossip with Harry. And he always returned the favor, although he learned long ago that the assistants always knew the most about everything. So many higher ups would just keep talking and not even notice that they were around, so she always had something juicy to share with him. And his lips were sealed with her secrets inside, of course.
He listened intently for a few minutes as she went on about the rumor going around that one of the camera men was sleeping with an extra, but eventually his mind drifted off. The sound of her voice was comforting, but he wasn’t really making sense of the actual words she was saying. Even when she was excited, her voice remained soft. It sounded like a soft blanket you would use to wrap up a baby for nap time. Or your favorite teddy bear that you’ve had for 30 years that hardly resembled a bear at all anymore because it was so worn down.
“And I was like no, there’s no way that’s true! Right? Right Harry?” she asked him a second time upon realizing he wasn’t really paying attention.
“Oh uh, yeah,” he said, trying to cover his own ass.
But she knew better. She didn’t know what he was thinking about, but she knew his head wasn’t in the game she was trying to play.
“Ok, what’s really going on then, hm? You’ve been acting weird all day.”
He just shrugged. “Told you, nervous about the intimate scenes.”
“I thought we went over this this morning?” she questioned. “And that last one was so good!” The complement tickled a spot inside of him. “From where I was standing it looked completely real. Totally reminded me of this time with...” she drifted off, blush arriving back to her cheeks as she took a bite of her sandwich to cover. “Anyway...”
“No,” Harry said softly. “Tell me. Who was it and what was he doing?”
“You don’t want to hear about that H,” she insisted, taking another bite.
If only she knew. “Yeah, I do. Tell me.”
“Will it... is it gonna help you with your next scene? To hear about what it looks like from the other perspective?”
And honestly that had nothing to do with why he wanted to hear her tell the story, but she handed him a perfect cover right on a silver platter.
“Yeah, sure. Always want your feedback.”
“Ok,” she swallowed her bite, placing her sandwich back down on her plate carefully before wiping her hands and looking up at him. “So he is my...”
Harry gulped. She had someone. There goes any of his fantasies.
“Actually, was my friend.”
“Friend?”
“You know... friend... with benefits... whatever.”
She was already clearly nervous (in the cutest possible way), but Harry was eating up every word that came out of her mouth. And was. That was a good word to hear.
He knew the best way to get her to keep talking was to leave an open silence until she was uncomfortable enough to fill it, so that’s exactly what he did.
After a short pause, she spoke up again. Her voice was still soft and she was looking everywhere around the room except at him.
“And one night all his roommates were gone, so we didn’t have to use his room...” She looked up at him, hoping for some input, but he just raised his brows, urging her to continue. “So he said he wanted to do... he wanted to use the dining table. And I’d never done that so I figured I might as well...”
Harry hummed in agreement.
“I wasn’t wearing a dress like Florence was. But he took off my... we made it work.”
“And what was the worst thing he did? What should I make sure not to do on camera?” he asked, careful not to dig too deep.
She thought for a moment. “He did that thing where he shook his head back and forth really fast. I don’t know... maybe some girls like that but for me it’s not enough... not focused enough. And it gets messy but not in a fun way.”
His skin erupted with goosebumps, but he was an actor and he acted like he wasn’t bothered at all. Messy in a fun way. Harry could definitely work with that. Messy could definitely be fun.
“And what was the best part then?”
“The way he... when he...” she tried a few times to say what she wanted without actually saying it, but she was running into trouble.
“When he what, babe?”
“Um... when he... y’know...”
“No, I don’t know. That’s why I’m asking yeh. Wanna know what the best part was so I can recreate it on camera.”
The lie was thinning out now, as he realized he had finished shooting the scene in question and this wouldn’t really be relevant to any other part of the script. But he held up his excuse anyway. She was always very invested in whatever project she was working on, and he knew she would want to do whatever she could to help it go smoothly.
“Yeah... of course. Um... when he... he did this thing where he um... he was sucking and then also used his tongue on my... and it felt really...”
Harry could fill in the blanks eventually, of course he could. But something about the way she was shifting in her seat when he was pulling the words out of her made his stomach turn in the best way. So he egged her on further.
“Was he sucking on your clit, sweetheart?” he offered.
She nodded.
“And did it make you cum?”
She nodded again.
“And that was your favorite part?”
“Yes, Harry,” she said through a breath.
The temperature in the room seemed to have changed without his noticing. No amount of A/C could cut through the heat and tension between the two of them now.
“Do you want me to do that for you?” he said in a whisper.
She gave a small nod, her eyes closed now. And if he wasn’t looking so closely at her he might have missed it. But he didn’t. He saw it. And she wanted him just like he wanted her.
“Want me to do it now?”
Another nod.
“How much time do we have?”
She opened her eyes to look down at the schedule on her phone.
“Um, they need you back on set in an hour.”
“That’s plenty of time.”
Her cheeks were completely red, and Harry could feel the heat radiating off of them when he brought his hand up to her face, thumb stroking over her soft skin. She let out a breath and melted into his touch, and in that moment he knew he had never wanted anybody more. Eyes closed, she brought a hand up to her chest to feel her heartbeat.
Harry’s hand followed hers, the warmth from his skin spreading across her chest.
“Is it going fast?” he asked in a whisper.
She nodded, once again unable to find the words.
“Is that ok, or should I stop?”
“It’s ok,” she told him.
He hummed. His hand on her chest fell down to her waist as he pulled her ever closer to him. Her small breaths came out in little puffs across his lips.
“Gonna kiss you now, ok?” he warned her.
“Please.”
He started off slow, both because he wanted to savor the moment in case it never came again, and because he wanted to respect her boundaries. She just seemed like the type of person who wants to take things slow, soft, and gentle. Maybe because he always viewed her as soft and gentle in the best possible way.
And he was right about her being soft - her plush lips felt like clouds against his own. She was warm, and her mouth worked in tandem with Harry’s as he kissed her. Taking her bottom lip between his, he sucked a bit and pulled it back, earning a gasp so small he almost thought he was making it up. With her mouth slightly open now, he started using his tongue to dance around hers.
She tasted so good. Like the sandwich she had been eating, and the coffee she had that morning, and something else uniquely her. Harry thought it was probably his favorite taste in the entire world, and he could never get enough of it.
“C’mere,” he mumbled into her lips.
Using his hand on her waist and moving the other one to her upper back, he guided her off of her chair and closer to him. She straddled his lap, standing on her knees and never breaking the kiss. When he pushed her down to rest fully on his lap, she let out a whine and he knew she could feel him hard beneath her core.
“Feel what y’do to me?”
She didn’t answer except to continue kissing him with more enthusiasm than before.
They kissed like that for a while, hands roaming over each other’s bodies and tongues exploring each other’s mouths. The trailer once again started to feel hot, but he didn’t mind as long as the heat was coming from her body. And honestly, if she never let him do anything else with her, he would be content knowing that he got to have his moment. That he got to kiss her and know what she tastes like and how she moves her body against his.
At first, Harry thought she was grinding her hips against his subconsciously. But when he couldn’t help but let out a little groan at a particularly good movement, he felt her smile against his lips.
“Oh, y’like tha?” he teased.
She nodded her head again.
His hands stopped roaming then, finding a home on her hips as he pushed her down and guided her rolling against him. The tension was starting to build in his lower belly, and he knew he wasn’t going to last long if they kept that up.
But he told her he was going to eat her out, so that’s what he wanted to do.
Carefully, he shifted their bodies, resting her back against the small couch and allowing his own body to hover above her. His lips finally parted from hers, earning a small whine of disappointment. He only chuckled as he reattached his lips to the skin on her neck where he quickly found her pulsepoint and couldn’t help but suck on it just enough for her to feel it but not enough to leave a mark. She was right, her heart was beating quickly. But he figured that was a good thing.
His mouth traveled down then, over her collarbones and her upper chest, while his hands simultaneously traveled up from her hips. Fingers lightly grazing her skin, he felt goosebumps arise on her belly as he slowly pushed the fabric of her shirt up over her bra. He held her tightly by the ribs as he kissed the tops of her soft breasts, feeling as her breathing increased.
“Can I take this off?” he asked between kisses, letting his fingers graze against the band of her bra.
She nodded her head, but that wasn’t enough for Harry. Enough with the nodding, he needed to know she really wanted this as much as he did.
“Use your words, darling,” he whispered, looking at her.
“Yes,” she breathed out.
“That’s a good girl,” he muttered as he used one hand to raise her torso up off the couch and the other to unclasp the bra. The straps fell from her shoulders and he helped her remove it from her body, throwing it to the floor.
Without wasting any time he got to work giving further attention to her chest. He used his mouth on one side while massaging the other with his hand before switching. When her nipples were hard and pronounced, he couldn’t keep himself from sucking on them a little bit, only to bite lightly and pull back, just to see her reaction.
And her reaction was everything he had hoped it would be. Eyes squeezed tight again, her jaw dropped open but no words or sounds came out.
“Feels good?” he asked, leaving soft pecks over her tummy now.
“Yes, H.”
“Good. Gonna make you feel so good,” he promised.
His kisses traveled lower and lower down her abdomen until his nose was dragging along the waistband of her jeans. Slowly, he let his hands travel back up her body to grab at her boobs, smiling to himself when he got a small reaction out of her. All of her reactions so far had been rather small, nearly silent. But he was determined to hear that sound he had been thinking about earlier while on camera.
Before he had a chance to ask, she lifted her hips up from the couch. He chuckled a bit.
“Eager, hm?”
She pouted softly as she nodded.
Sitting back on his knees, he worked quickly to undo the button of her jeans and drag them down her legs. He looked back at her. She was biting her lip, fingers interlocked with each other and eyes wide.
“Is this still ok?” he asked, wary of her demeanor.
She nodded again, but before he could remind her to use her words, she spoke up. “Just... little nervous?”
“You’ve done this before, yeah?”
“Yeah but not... not for a long time. I’m not... I wasn’t expecting this so I’m not... ready... down there.”
It took a minute for her words to click in his mind, but when they did his gaze softened. Crawling back over her, he took her lips to his mouth once again before mumbling against them.
“Don’t care. S’your pussy, s’gonna be beautiful.”
He gave one more kiss before leaning back and searching her eyes for any other hesitancies.
“We don’t have to do this, Y/N. We can wait until another time... or never at all. Whatever you want.”
“But you want to?”
Harry couldn’t help but laugh at her question.
“Babe, you’ve got no idea how bad I want to.”
“Then I want to, too.”
One more peck to her lips and he was making his way back down her body. He couldn’t help but leave a trail of wet kisses on her skin in his wake. She was so soft, and beautiful, and gentle. She had always shown him so much care and concern, and he had felt like over the course of this and the other films they had worked on together, he had only taken from her. He took his lunches and his coffees, he took his scheduling, he took any and all advice she would give him. And he never had the chance to give her anything back. But this was his chance.
Eventually he settled himself between her legs. He left a kiss over her clothed mound and took a deep breath in through his nose before looking up at her again.
“Wanna take these off is that-”
“Yes,” she cut him off with a breathy response.
When he had her bare, he couldn’t help but take a moment to soak in her beauty. But she soon started squirming, the cold air meeting her wet center and producing goosebumps along her legs and tummy.
He was so focused on kissing up and down her inner thighs, Harry almost didn’t hear her whine. When it finally registered, he smirked to himself and focused his attention where she really wanted it. He wrapped his left arm around her thigh, fingers careful not to dig into her soft skin too hard. With his other hand he trailed one finger through her folds, from bottom to top, giving just a slight tease.
Holding it in front of his face, he turned his wrist a few times.
“Look at tha... and I bet you even...” he put his finger in his mouth, sucking off her wetness. She whined again at the act. “I was right... taste so fucking amazing...”
“Harry, please,” she whined quietly even though they were alone.
Somehow he had gotten so caught up on her that he almost forgot she was there, as if that oxymoron was even possible. There was just something about her that turned his brain a little bit upside down, a little bit into a pile of much. But he liked the feeling.
He acknowledged her request, though, finally giving her body his full attention again. Mouth open and tongue flat, he licked at her, appreciating the sweet taste she left behind. His right hand wrapped around her thigh as well and he used the tips of his fingers to spread her open even further. Eyes closed, he did just what he pictured he was doing about an hour earlier. He lapped at her lips, sucked her clit into his mouth, hummed around it to express that he was enjoying it just as much as he hoped she was.
From above, Harry could hear Y/N let out a small moan, only to catch herself and swallow it back down.
“Hey now,” he said, lifting his face from her core. “None of that... wanna hear you. Will you let me hear you?” he turned his need into a request, thrilled when she agreed.
He got back to work, this time hearing her small gasps and moans. Some of them sounded a bit forced, but he knew he could get her to release her pleasure without holding back. Bringing his fingers back into play, he slipped two into her hole, curling them upward to rub at her g-spot. He could hear her breath catch in her throat, but he wanted more.
Thrusting in and out, he continued working her over with his hand as he licked at her clit. By this time it was plenty swollen and begging for attention, just how Harry liked it. And that’s when he remembered the conversation that had gotten them to where they are now.
Without slowing the movements of his fingers, he sucked her clit into his mouth harshly before letting his tongue flick it back and forth within his mouth. The combination of sensations proved to be almost too much for Y/N as she let out an unfiltered moan. It was the most beautiful sound Harry had ever heard. And now that he knew what it sounded like, he needed more.
With his free hand he pressed down on her lower tummy as he continued to bury his face into her essence. Her thighs started to flex, then her legs kicked a bit as she squirmed - to get closer or further from his mouth he couldn’t really tell, but he knew she was feeling the pleasure he had hoped to be able to give her.
“Gonna cum for me, pretty girl?” he asked, taking a break from using his mouth but not ceasing the movement of his hand.
“Yes, H,” she moaned, the nickname scratching an itch inside his brain that he didn’t know was there. He wanted it to always sound like that coming from her mouth.
“I want you to cum for me,” he told her before bringing his mouth back down to where it belonged.
It wasn’t long then. He continued his ministrations and she was soon rocking her head from side to side, the pleasure too much. But it was clear she didn’t want him to stop. He knew she was close and he had to get her there. He redoubled his efforts and earned his reward.
Her heels started to dig into his back and one of her hands flew down to his hair, holding on tight. Finally the tension reached a high, and something popped inside of her leading to her release. He continued working and taking all that she would give him. He helped her through her orgasm as she pulled his hair, the pain grounding him and reminding him that this was real and not a dream like it was starting to feel like.
He didn’t stop until she was whining, her legs back down to his sides, hand pushing his head instead of pulling. Sitting up, he saw her chest rising and falling quickly as she tried to catch her breath. Y/N’s eyes were still closed but he could see the blissed out expression on her face.
When she finally opened her eyes, heart rate and breathing returning back to normal, she had a smile plastered across her face. And Harry couldn’t help but leave a quick kiss on it.
“Wanna help me practice for my next scene, too?”

Evan Rachel Wood, Darren Criss on Stepping Into ‘Little Shop of Horrors’: “We’re Both These Little Theater ’90s Nerds”
The 'Westworld' actress and 'American Crime Story' star open up about deciding to take the stage together, personal connections to their characters, and their love for Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.
It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before the duo is set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway‘s Little Shop of Horrors. Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top to bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music). Now in its fifth year, several notable names have left their mark on this U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard, Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends.
As the interview begins, Wood — who is already at the theater — openly wonders whether she should take the elevator down to where she’ll soon meet co-star and friend Criss, before quickly interjecting that “you might lose me for two seconds.” Meanwhile, Criss declares he opted to skip the subway after realizing he was running behind, as he briefly turns on his Zoom camera to reveal himself in the backseat of a car.
Later, his voice will drop out for a few minutes, before reappearing, sounding winded. “I have my ear pods in, and so I just got out of the car talking to you guys, and you cut out,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Then I looked at the car driving away, so I just sprinted down the block to grab it.” This frantic energy is reminiscent of what you can find within this kind of scrappy, fast-paced, off-Broadway musical environment in the final days before curtains go up. As replacements, Criss and Wood will do so with less time to rehearse and no preview audiences on which to test their performances, but that doesn’t seem to phase either of them. Instead, with their easy and fun rapport, the duo celebrate the challenge of what it means to be passed this mantle for a three-month run, beginning Jan. 30. On Tuesday, Wood will make her New York theater debut, a long-awaited moment for the actress who grew up with a father (Ira David Wood III) as an actor, playwright and theater director in her hometown of Raleigh. With her early stage ambitions sidelined by a burgeoning film career — later including movie musicals like Frozen II and Across the Universe — the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Wood will finally return to her performance roots, a year after news of her attachment to a possible Thelma & Louise musical adaptation for Broadway.
Little Shop of Horrors will also mark Criss’ first return to New York’s musical theater world since a multi-week replacement run in 2015 as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. On the phone, he’s adamant that, absent traditional musical theater training, he’s fooled the world into thinking he’s more than an “actor trying to act like he knows how to sing.” But with several EPs, a Christmas album, Billboard-charting work with StarKids Productions, and roles in musical-driven screen projects like Glee and Hazbin Hotel, it’s hard not to believe that the Emmy and SAG award-winning performer, like Wood, will be right at home. Ahead of their debut, the duo spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about sharing the stage, the impact of Little Shop of Horrors across the stage and screen, their love of Ashman and Menken, and why these roles are personally resonant and remain culturally timely. Darren, you said in a previous interview that you had been begging Evan to come do theater in New York for years. How did you make that happen now and for you both together? CRISS Let me just start by saying as much as I can before she can hear me. I’m in a regular habit of just exalting Evan for her talent. I’d done this before I even had the great privilege of getting to know and become friends with her. I’m always talking about how wonderfully talented she is and how I’ve always really loved her voice and her breadth of ability. When I meet people who are these wonderful triple threats that have a really strong theatrical background — people who can sing and don’t have as many opportunities as I wish they did — I get off on the idea of people who didn’t know that they could do this thing finally getting to see that they could do this thing.
Evan has done a lot of singing in her life. She’s literally a Disney princess for Frozen II and there’s obviously Across the Universe. But knowing that she has this really strong theatrical background, I’ve always been hell-bent on getting her on a stage. As a friend, she has popped up on many gigs with me in my personal life just for fun and parties I’ve thrown. She showed up for me on the Christmas album. She’s said yes to me far more many times than I frankly deserve. So when this came around, a lot of my colleagues — a lot of my friends — have been Seymour, and who loves theater that doesn’t love Little Shop of Horrors? It would be a really fun time for me, but the thing that would make it really, really special is if I had got the chance to do it with an Audrey that not only I thought really could bring something spectacular to the role, but on a personal level, this is off-Broadway. We’re all doing this scrappy theater thing in a basement together. If we’re going to live on top of each other might as well be someone but I’m also personally very fond of and have a wonderful relationship with. So short story that’s way too long, I went to Evan and said “Hey, I have an idea. Would you be available to do this?” and thank my lucky stars, she said yes. I’m just a pig in shit, getting to do this with her. It’s an absolute joy. Evan, what’s your response to that glowing review, but also, why did you want to make this show your off-Broadway New York theater debut?
WOOD Funny enough, I have been so close to being on Broadway a handful of times and something has always come in the way of scheduling or something falls apart. It was actually my dream as a kid. I went back and read some old interviews of mine when I was around 12 or 13, and I completely had forgotten that my dream was to go live in New York, go to NYU, and do theater in New York. That was where my sights were set before my life sort of got derailed for a moment. So it’s always been in my sights. It’s gotten increasingly harder over the years to make it work, especially if you have kids, to be away from home for such long periods of time. Usually, the theater commitments are an amount of time that I was just never able to do and so the timing was perfect because I was thinking to myself, “God, I wish I could go to New York and do a play, but maybe not a six-month run. Maybe something around three months. A classic musical that’s going to be really fun.” Darren called me maybe a week later and said, “I’d love for you to come and do it with me,” and it was like an instant yes. To piggyback on what Darren said, I feel very similarly about Darren and that whenever he’s asked me to do something, I just know it’s going to be great. I know it’s going to be fun and I fully believe in everything that he does and his talent. We’re both these little theater ’90s nerds that just hit it off in so many ways, and we collaborate well together. I just felt like we would like this project. It’s made so much sense for both of us that it was a no-brainer.
Little Shop of Horrors is one of those musicals that even people who aren’t big fans of musical theater and attend regularly are aware of, both in terms of story and music. Among the many adaptations of this, whether it was a professional or high school staging or even any of the movie versions, was there one that made you want to do this show? CRISS I’ll say this. As hip of an aura as I’ve tried to give off, make no mistake, I think the biggest gateway to this property for everybody is hands down the movie. I was not seeing off off Broadway theater in the 1980s. I wasn’t there, and that’s why I love movie musicals so much. As much as I love going to the theater, being able to go to a Broadway show is a very specific and privileged situation tied to being in New York City. But whether it’s a liked or celebrated movie, it is still going to be the most accessible thing in perpetuity for everybody. So definitely the movie and those songs. Before you can really understand the complexities of the thematic, Faustian elements and high dramaturgical elements of the story — and before you even get the comedy — you get the music. Especially when you’re really young and your parents are playing you things that you go, “OK, well, kids can get behind music.” It doesn’t take much to understand that the music from that show is beloved. I mean, this music and this show are like proto-Disney Renaissance. It’s like what got [Jeffrey] Katzenberg to ask Alan Menken and Howard Ashman to help them out. It was like, “We want to do some Disney musical fairy tales.” Now, because of the show, we have The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast.
I grew up in the ’90s, as me and Evan tend to relate upon a lot. With The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and these films that I loved so much, as I got older, I really wanted to know more about the people behind them. I became obsessed with, and I talk a lot about, Howard Ashman and how much of an influence he’s had on the musical theater genre ever since the popularity of those films. So I wanted to go back to the start of that, and that’s when I started to dive into Little Shop and discover how this was the sort of nexus — the genesis — of everything. WOOD Yeah, same. I grew up watching the film and being so terrified by it, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I grew up doing theater. My father runs a theater in Raleigh, North Carolina, and so that was my childhood. I was always listening to show tunes, and as Darren said, the classic Disney albums, acting out plays in my living room and Little Mermaid was certainly one of them. Ellen Greene’s performance always stuck with me, and I am also a major Howard Ashman-Alan Menkin nerd for similar reasons as Darren. Those were all things that drew me to it. I was really terrified about and still am terrified about being eaten by the plant because it was like a deep seated childhood fear of mine that I had to conquer to do this show. It’s stuck with me since childhood. It’s not as bad as you would think. But it’s still pretty scary. Also just a fun fact, I was cast as Audrey in the seventh-grade school play, but I couldn’t do it because I was doing movies. (Laughs.) So I got pulled out of school, but I was almost Audrey in seventh grade.
CRISS You aged into it well. This is a much more appropriate time in your life being Audrey than in seventh grade, so worked out just great. (Laughs.) I just have to say, this production, we both have our careers going on and different dragons that we’re chasing in our professional and personal lives that committing to a big Broadway production is a huge investment. What’s so wonderful about this is, the way the show is set up, we can kind of come in for just a little bit. It’s really high output but like low stakes — and I don’t want to say that to be reductive of the production. I mean that the show is beloved. There are people that know this show but have never seen it, and have heard of it and know the songs without ever even having tried to listen and know the songs. So it’s so culturally ubiquitous, that it’s a very, welcome accessible thing for all kinds of folks and that might cross-pollinate between me and Evan’s demographic of people who might be interested in us. Also, it’s been running for long enough that I feel protected. I’ve seen this production several times. Evan and I went just last night. It’s something that you don’t have to figure out. One of the hardest parts about getting a show up on its feet is like, does it work? Do we want this song in? We got to do with an audience and you really have to workshop stuff for a long time. Shows take years before they’ve reached mainstream Broadway, so the fact that all that legwork is taken out is a no-brainer for us. It’s just this really like warm snuggle from something that we really love.
You’re right in that this is not a traditional production experience for you, as you’re coming in after others, and you have less rehearsal time, no previews. What have the challenges or exciting elements of that been for you so far? WOOD I don’t know about you, Darren, but I feel like one of the reasons why I said yes to doing this with you is because this is kind of where you and I thrive — in the fast-paced chaos. I need a challenge sometimes. I need that adrenaline and I need that fast pace, especially if I’m coming in to do theater. That’s where I grew up, and that’s what I’m used to. That’s where home is for me. So coming back into the theater into the organized chaos of it all feels right. My brain loves it and thrives off of it. When somebody says “Oh, this is a really hard number to learn,” I think, “This is going to be my favorite number.” (Laughs.) I love figuring something out, and picking it apart piece by piece and putting it back together, then conquering it. There’s just such satisfaction that comes from doing that there, Darren, and I think it’s similar for you. CRISS It is kind of a party trick some people are quick studies of, for better or for worse. I think this kind of pace suits us. I think it’s something that we wear pretty well, and I think we do that a lot in our own lives. But to do it together is pretty fun. I’ve thrown Evan into all kinds of things where she’ll just show up knowing a whole song last minute. That’s not too dissimilar, and it’s not like we’re learning new music. We know these songs.
In the theater world, you learn a track. It’s literally a track — there are little railroad tracks set around the stage because there’s no follow spots. The lights are where they are. You don’t have to do hours of tech rehearsal, figuring out where the lighting cues are. They’re there. It is our job to jump into a machine that is already very well-oiled and running. So in that regard, you’re kind of free from having to worry about that stuff. But you can just focus on your characterization and nuance within these very, specific directives. I’ve done a few put-ins. I think this is probably your first, Evan, for a show that’s already going. Correct me if I’m wrong. WOOD I did learn, for the record, Baz Luhrmann in one night and performed it the next night. CRISS Case and point. So yeah, doing a put-in — I’ve done it a few times for Broadway — it’s nice because then you can just focus on the little things that you really want to play with and not worry about these big macro things. What’s funny is that people always say, “Oh, I love Broadway music. I love Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors.” The word Broadway is often conflated with the music from narrative storytelling, whether it be from films or TV. This show was always an off-Broadway darling. It was only really on Broadway for a little bit in 2003. Beyond that, it’s the movie and this off-off-Broadway show, which started in the ’80s and ran for a pretty long time. Then in just so many regional and school productions. But it’s actually only been on Broadway for a minority of the time.
WOOD And that was intentional, right? It was really important to them to keep it off Broadway because that was the spirit of the show. It was on Skid Row. It wasn’t supposed to be a big huge glitzy production. CRISS When you contextualize it, it’s a famous show now, but if you’re in the ’80s, and you’ve got some big Broadway musicals happening uptown, and you’re trying to tell your friends, “Yeah, I saw this thing downtown. You got to come. It’s kind of this doo-wop that’s based of this Roger Corman B-movie. There’s a plant that’s a puppet but it’s hard to explain. You just got to come down and see it.” (Laughs.) Trying to contextualize that, it makes you realize this really is a weird thing, man. It’s a weird, off-the-beaten-path, outlying renegade show. You’ve both done musicals in different mediums, which is, obviously, a different process. Was there anything you brought in with you about doing it on-screen to your performances now? WOOD It’s kind of the opposite for me. I’ve carried theater into my film work because I started in theater, so I learned how to do things fluidly and without stopping. There’s a lot of stop and start in TV and film and sometimes that’s nice. But sometimes it’s frustrating, especially when you come from a theater background. There’s something so satisfying about telling the story from beginning to end and playing the entire arc of the character in one go. There’s just a certain energy and an aliveness that comes with that that you can’t have when you have the camera in the room and it’s constantly moving and starting and stopping and changing.
CRISS I would say the same thing. I don’t know if this math checks out, but I think I’ve spent in my collective hours working in any kind of performing art more time in a theater than I have on a set. That might not be true, but in my mind, it feels that way. I constantly feel like I’m bringing what I know in the theater to film and television. I’d always prefer to be doing theater, but these days, listen, I’ll work anywhere, anyhow. As long as, hopefully, it’s positive, and additive to the world in some way. The theater, without getting on a total spiritual kick, it is a holy place. It’s an ancient art form. It is catharsis. It is sharing something with people in real-time before your very eyes. It’s why, despite the fact that we have TV and film and every possible AR, VR medium to displace our reality, theater is still around. It’s why we go to church, why we go to temple, why we go to the mosque — so we can experience something that we collectively want to believe in. We’re strangers and we want to elevate ourselves to something that’s bigger than the sum of our parts. I realize I said I didn’t want to get into a whole spiritual thing with it, but there you go. That can only happen after the fact, months if not years after you do it in a film set.
Evan and I are about to do our first put-in rehearsal, which is to say, we’re going to do the whole thing top to bottom, but there will be a key character missing, and that is the audience. The audience is one of the main characters of any show. And as much as you’d not want to break the fourth wall — that they’re not supposed to be there — of course, they’re there. Of course, that’s why we’re there — to have that kind of sacred communion with an audience giving you the privilege of their presence. You have a responsibility and a duty to make sure that you are sharing some kind of worthwhile experience with them. So getting to renew that experience every night, to me, is the most noble vocation that you can have as an artist.
WOOD I learned how to sing before I learned how to act because I wanted to do musical theater. So this is my favorite thing to do. Of all the mediums is being able to marry the singing and the acting together. Always my first love. CRISS I’m still learning how to do those two things, which is why Evan Rachel Wood is in this production — to teach me how to do those things. (Laughs.) Part of why shows like Little Shop go on for so long — why they can get this many revivals or adaptations — is that there’s something timeless about the story and its characters. For you, what is most timeless about Seymour and Audrey? Amid all the other actors who have taken on these roles, what are you most connecting to? WOOD From what I understand, everybody that’s come in to do the show brings their own energy and spin on it. Especially with Audrey — Ellene Greene, her performance is so iconic. The look, the voice, the songs. So stepping into that is figuring out how I pay homage to the parts of this character that people love and expect to see, but also bring my vibe and energy to it. That’s exciting to figure out what my Audrey looks like. For me, it’s also hard not to relate to her and her struggles because, unfortunately, those are very timeless — poverty, abuse, patriarchy. She’s sort of a victim of all of those things. Not to get too real for a second, but I am a domestic violence survivor playing this character who is going through similar struggles, who has these similar feelings and dreams of getting out and going to a better place and getting far, far away from her past. They’re all very real things, but they’re in this setting of campiness and horror. What’s amazing about the show for me is that it is fun. It is campy. There are man-eating plants. But there’s such sincerity to it as well. Especially with Audrey, Seymour, and their relationship. There are so many beautiful real moments between the two of them. Themes of poverty and capitalism are still just so prevalent that that’s why it’s so timeless because these things just are not going away.
CRISS I’m glad Evan mentioned her own experience and what that brings to the show. I think, for my money, pathos is a dish best served sweet. Comedy and fun are a wonderful support system for really heavy themes. WOOD Exactly. CRISS I think I’m that I’m more likely to take something more seriously if it’s not shoved down my throat. This is a comedy and to me, there’s not a lick of fat on this thing from Howard Ashman who was just such an extraordinary dramaturg. He took this really silly B-movie, and managed to hone in on the very ancient themes. You’re asking what makes Seymour so timeless. It’s a Faustian tale. This is the one of the oldest fables asking what is the price of greatness. What is a man willing to do, willing to give up, willing to trade to get what he wants? WOOD He literally sells his soul. CRISS Yeah, he sells his soul. The plant is Mephistopheles in this parable of Little Shop. But, of course, if you’re going go downtown and say, “I’m going to do a show. It’s like a Faust thing, and Mephistopheles shows up,” you can see people’s eyes glaze over. Well, how about it’s this guy, there’s music that is evocative of what was popular in the late ’50s, but the plant sings. It’s sci-fi, but it’s horror, but it’s fun, and it’s comedy. Now you have my attention, now I’m subscribing to the fun and the music. But by the end of it, I’m experiencing a classic, traditional, academic tale in a really fun way. When you said there’s been millions of iterations of this show, my mind went to, there’s been millions of iterations of this story. This is probably just one of the funniest ones I can think of.
There is ancientness to this tale. I’ve realized recently I’ve made a lot of my roles, especially in the Broadway world, about people who would do anything to accomplish greatness. To varying degrees of evil or good or compromise, people are always trying to figure out what it is they have to do, and what they have to give up. What line they would cross to get it. A lot of times people are kind of conflicted [watching Little Shop of Horrors] because you are rooting for this guy doing this thing, but he’s doing something terrible. Does that make you complicit? Are you a bad person for wanting this? All those things are the bread and butter of good old-fashioned drama.

Like every morning, you woke up from the alarm on your phone going off but this time it was followed by a deep groan. Jake.
“Why do you wake up so early, we don’t have to be at school for another two and a half hours”. His voice had a raspy and gravely tone to it. His morning voice was hot to say the least. “I take a shower in the morning and since I’m still tired, it takes me a while, so I plan an extra hour.” Jake just groaned again as you started to get up, you could feel his hand slide from its resting place on your side to the bed as you slipped from the blankets and walked to the bathroom.
Looking behind you, you saw Jake who was still in bed, looking up at you with puppy dog eyes. “You know Jake, you could always join me.” He smiled a bit and started pulling the blankets off of himself. You took his slow pace to get a head start and get the water running. You turned on the vent fan above and kept the lights at a low level.
Slowly, you removed your pants and pulled the shower curtain back to the walk-in shower and stepped in. The water falling above immediately warmed your body up, goosebumps rose along your arms, shocked by the contrast of the cold air and warm water. Before you could stop yourself, a relaxed sigh escaped from your lips, but it turned into a surprised squeak and the goosebumps that prickled across my skin intensified from Jake wrapping his arms around your waist and pressing his chest to your back.
“We don’t have time to do anything Sim, so tell Lil’ Jake to calm down.” You could feel his hard-on against your lower back but of course, your mind was nearing the school mindset. “Never call my dick ‘Lil’ Jake’ again.” You just laughed and reached for your body wash that was sitting on the shelf next to the rest of your products.
Jake just watched you scrub a loofa along your body with soap and then body wash in comfortable silence. The music that you played was soft but had sensual undertones to it and Jake felt himself leaning against the wall and drifting off to sleep again. With the music, the warmth of the water, and the presence of you, he was as peaceful as he ever thought he could be.
“Would you like to accompany me to view a film this Saturday?” Jake was still leaning against the wall as you washed yourself. The sleepiness in his voice that was followed with a yawn made you turn around to face him. “I would love to but I’m going to the mall on Saturday with Sunoo. What time is the movie? Sunoo and I are going at one so if it’s a night movie, then I can go.”
Jake lightly pushed off of the wall and took the body wash from your hands and squirted a bit out and into his palm. He then rubbed the wash around your shoulders and back, pushing his thumbs in and massaging the tight spots.
“We can go at night if that works best for you.” As you were nodding, Jake rubbed out a particular knot that had been bothering you and the hum of affirmation turned into a moan. “Your muscles are so tense, why do you let yourself get this stressed?” He planted a kiss to the side of your head and waited for you to respond. “I don’t mean to, but I have so much to do every day.”
“And that’s why I’m going to make you skip first hour today.” You couldn’t skip, you had a meeting with the rest of the student council during that hour. When you were a freshman, you joined student council as the treasurer once you found out you got to skip first period when meetings occurred. Then you found out it looked great on college applications, so by your sophomore year you were president, the youngest president the student body had seen in a long time, although it just added more to your plate and college application, it pissed Sunghoon off.
Your nodding turned into shaking your head, “I can’t skip Jake, I have a student council meeting, and as president, it is my responsibility to be present to every single meeting.” Jake’s warm chest was pressed against your back, allowing you to relax your body and lean on him. “When was the last time you had missed a meeting?” You hadn’t, you had never, ever missed a meeting. “Never.”
That’s how you ended up where you were now. Naked, on your bed, legs spread, with Jake between them. “J-Jake! Fuck, more please, I can-t” you could feel your legs shaking around his head as his tongue played with the wetness coming from your cunt. “Can’t what? Can’t take it? I think you can, you’re doing such a good job for me, such a good girl. Such a pretty girl.”
“Jake we’re gonna be la-late, can’t be late, fe-els so good though.” With each swipe of his tongue between your folds you were losing it even more, and when he’d nudge your clit, you couldn’t contain the moan that would leave your lips. “You’re not going, gonna make you feel good.” Jake looked up from his spot and watched you.
Your eyebrows furrowed from the loss of friction, and he laughed, he laughed when you rolled your hips up to chase his mouth. “Please don’t stop!” Jake leaned his forehead on your naval, breathing you in. “I’ll start again when you agree to take a break today.” You nodded your head quickly, just trying to get Jake to start again. “Okay, anything just please don’t stop!” He was satisfied with your response and started again, two swipes through your folds and he paused again. A mixture of a groan and a yell escaped your mouth. “If I knew any better, I’d say you haven’t had your pussy played with in a long time.”
It had been a long time, you’ve had quiet hook ups and one long term fuck buddy throughout the year, making sure none of them said anything due to wanting to keep your reputation. “So long, s’been so long. Too long.” Jake liked you this way, vulnerable, needy, desperate. Desperate for him. “That’s a shame, your pussy is too sweet to be ignored.” With that Jake continued his mannerisms.
Drawing orgasm after orgasm out of you, he still continued. Uncoherent sounds were coming from both of you. You begging him to stop and to continue and him mumbling about the way you taste and smell and how he wouldn’t get enough of you. Your legs were wrapped tightly around his head as everything started to become too much. Jake could tell you were just about done. You felt raw and not to mention swollen.
Your legs tightened and shook one last time until Jake felt his mouth and the lower half of his face being soaked. The room was filled with your loud moan as your back arched off of the bed. Jake kept licking up your arousal and cum until you had to push his head off of you.
“You squirted, Sweetheart.” Your droopy eyes shot open, and your face was on fire. “No, please be joking.” He laughed and pulled you into his chest, rubbing your bare back. “Don’t worry, it was so fucking hot. Did you enjoy it though?” Refusing to say anything in fear of being embarrassed any further, you just nodded.
“M’tired now Jake.” Sleep sounded perfect right now, but when you tried to glance at the clock, Jake turned your head back to him. “What time is it?” You looked up at him and couldn’t help but smile, his hair was ruffled and his lips plumper than normal, and they were decorated with a thin sheen. “School has already started. First hour isn’t over quite yet but you really do deserve a break. Everyone can tell how hard you work and how much you care about the school.” Academic validation and praise were two of the things that could make you gush. Jake had hit them both in one sentence and you didn’t know what to do.
Of course teachers now and of the past have praised you but this felt different, someone your own age was saying this, and it wasn’t to just get in your pants, he had already been in them, but he stayed and was saying this. “Okay, one rest day won’t hurt.”
Even if you wanted to go to school, the smile that lit up Jake’s face made it worth it.
You and Jake hadn’t stopped talking at all, you’d meet up in between classes, after school, and he kept spending the night since your parents were still out of the country. Jake was able to get you to forget about Sunghoon, especially when you received a text once the time film club was rolled around, and you didn’t show up. Jake and you did most things together, he even drove you places when you had errands to run, you never had to ask, he’d always offer.
“Thanks for dropping me off, Jake.” You gave him a kiss on the cheek before you turned away to open the car door and step out. “The movie starts at 7:00 but if you’re still out we can just go at a later time but no matter the time just text me when you want to be picked up.” Hearing Sunoo call your name caused you to quicken your pace a bit, you nodded at Jake, smiled, and closed the car door.
The beautiful boy met you halfway and interlocked your elbows together. “So…you and Jake.” Sunoo smiled at his acquaintance as he pulled out of the parking spot. You both watched Jake leave the parking lot in silence, you trying to figure out what to say and Sunoo trying to keep his smile in. “I’m not sure what we are. We’ve hung out everyday this week, he ate me out one morning so I would skip school, including the meeting and film club with Park. We like each other but I can’t help but to feel as if something is pulling me back.” Sunoo knew, everyone knew, except you and the thing pulling you back, of course.
The smiling boy had a pep in his step after hearing about his two friends. “You already got him whipped, oh my lord.” Disagreeing, you grumbled your doubt and shook your head. “I don’t know about that.” You rolled your eyes, but Sunoo wasn’t having it, “Y’know, whenever me and Hoon would talk about you, no matter the context, Jake would always make a point of saying how pretty you were.” Your face morphed into a grimace at the mention of Sunghoon, but you still had a tint of red on your cheeks from the mention of Jake telling his friends that you were pretty.
“Why do you look so surprised? Everyone thinks you’re pretty, including Hoon but heaven forbid him to ever admit it.” For some reason that would didn’t know, the though of Park Sunghoon thinking you were pretty made the fire inside of you burn brighter and hotter, it made you blush more than Jake thinking you were pretty.
Sunoo noticed but he could tell that you were arguing with yourself about it, so he didn’t say anything. He was content with being the middleman of this triangle he could see forming. He liked the gossip and the drama, of course he wasn’t on a specific side, but he still wanted to see how everything played out.
Giggling brought you out of the inner war going inside your head and turned your attention to the boy next to you. “What is it, Sun?” He nodded ahead of you, and you saw your equivalent to the devil.
“What the fuck is he doing here?” You huffed, hating how his eyes crinkled when he threw his head back if he laughed too hard. “It’s a public area girly, just because you’re here doesn’t mean he can’t be.” You loved Sunoo for always being there for you but hated that he was also always there for Sunghoon, Sunoo was the peacemaker.
“Hey L/n, how are you?” His smile was smug, it took everything in you to hold back from slapping him. “Sunoo and I are just fine.” Keeping your head tilted slightly up to show confidence, you tightened your hold on Sunoo and started leading him to one of the many stores you two had talked about.
Normally, Sunghoon wouldn’t bother you too much if you were to run in to each other in public, but when you were with Sunoo he tended to tag along. “Where are you going? We haven’t even caught up about film club!” Sunghoon jogged to Sunoo’s side and matched your guys’ pace.
“I’m sorry Y/n, I tried to tell him not to bother you but, well, you know how he is.” An apologetic voice appeared by your side, you would’ve jumped in surprise if it wasn’t so soothing and quiet. “It’s okay Jungwon. I appreciate the effort though.” He gave you a shy smile and looked to his friend who was starting to irritate you.
His voice was deep, and terribly attractive. Too attractive for the shit it was being used for. “I know you’re actually glad about me joining film because God knows you wouldn’t be able to do it without me, so why’d you skip?” One of his eyebrows arched slightly in question and then started talking again. “Actually, I didn’t you at all that day. What’s with that Miss. President?”
Something that you liked about Sunghoon is that he could be easily surprised. “Jake spent the night and convinced me not to go to school.” You shrugged off the question but relished in the way his jaw dropped. “Jake. Jake Sim? My friend.” Jungwon nudged your side in approval, but Sunghoon’s icy stare was still set on your face, waiting, praying for a sign that you were joking. He could only assume what had happened, he knew Jake, and he knew you. Sunghoon felt his stomach tighten and he wasn’t sure why. He had brought it up to Sunoo once, the feeling of his organs coiling around each other, when he saw you dancing at freshman homecoming with a boy. Sunoo said he was jealous, and Park Sunghoon claimed that he was not jealous.
“What the fuck is wrong with you? Sleeping with my best friend. I didn’t you think you’d go that low. Fucking whore”
“This isn’t about you. Jake likes me and I like him, there is no Sunghoon apart of this situation. And I’m not a whore.” Sunghoon looked stunned at your outburst, but you didn’t care, you were upset.
Instead of waiting for Sunghoon to say something you just spun on your heel and started walking in the other direction, towards the mall entrance. Removing your phone from your back pocket, you pulled up Jake’s number and called him. After the third ring his voice soothed your ears, “Hey, Y/n what’s up? Did something happen?”
“Can you just come pick me up, I know it’s only been 20 minutes, but I want to go.” Jake could hear the sorrow in your voice and complied immediately. “Yeah, of course, I’m on my way.” You refused to cry because of Sunghoon, but he knew that you didn’t sleep around, and it had been a while since you had gotten intimate with someone. He was just mad that you were sleeping with his friend.
When you made it to the doors that led to the parking lot, you cursed at the sight and sound of rain.
At least there was a canopy that you could stand under while you waited for Jake, however, the canopy didn’t keep you safe from the harsh wind that was picking up speed. The wind also brought sprinkles of rain to your skin, causing you to shiver slightly.
“Hey, I’m sorry Hoon is such a dick.” Jungwon exited the doors and stood by you under the canopy. “It’s fine, I don’t know why I let him bother me. Where’s Sun? I feel bad for ditching him on our day.” Jungwon laughed at the mention of your friend.
"Sunoo is ripping Hoon a new one. After he saw the look on your face, Sunoo let it all out.” You chuckled at the thought of your normally happy friend getting mad and verbalizing it.
You were about to thank Jungwon for telling you, but a car horn interrupted you. Looking over your shoulder you saw Jake. “Thanks Jungwon, I hope my mood didn’t ruin your afternoon.” You smiled at him and started jogging to Jake’s car, but not before bracing yourself for the rain. “Anytime Y/n, and you didn’t bother me at all! I’ll yell at Hoon for you!” Laughing, you opened Jake’s car door and sat in the passenger seat.
“Hey, what happened? Are you okay?” Jake asked you as soon as you were secure in his car, he turned on the heat and made sure it was blowing out of the vents, achieving his goal of warming you up. “Yeah, Sunghoon just being a dick but I’m fine now.” You leaned over the console and nuzzled your nose in Jake’s neck, breathing in his musky but clean cologne.
He kissed your hair and asked, “What was Hoon even doing there?” You rolled your eyes without even thinking about it, not wanting to think or speak about him anymore. “He was there with Jungwon and with them and Sunoo being friends, he invited himself. He got mad about you and I and then called me a ‘fucking whore’”. Jake’s knuckles turned white from gripping the steering wheel so tight.
“Are you serious? Did he at least apologize?” He let out a dry chuckle at the thought of his friend apologizing to you. Jake and Sunoo both knew why Sunghoon hated you, but neither were going to break it to you, especially now that you and Jake were together. “It’s okay, you’re away from him for now, I’ve got you.”
You sat back in your seat and nodded, quietly thanking him. “Do you think we could go to the movie now?” Jake smiled and looked at you quickly. “When I was looking at times there was one at 2:00, and that’s in 20 minutes so I’ll head that way.”
The movie’s previews hadn’t finished by the time you and Jake got to the theater and luckily it wasn’t too busy so the seats you picked, weren’t bad. Watching Austin Butler wiggle his hips and throwing popcorn at Jake was nice way to clear your head. When the popcorn was all finished and the movie was only halfway done, Jake laid his head on your shoulder, and you leaned your head on his.
Whenever you would call Austin hot, Jake would flex his covered bicep and say, “I’m hotter and I’m good at eating pussy.” You laughed and smacked at his chest, embarrassed but you agreed, nonetheless.
“That was pretty good.” Jake took your hand in his and led you out of the theater. “I just can’t believe that it’s dark already.” You observed after walking outside.
“Well, let’s get you home huh, do you want me to stay again?” You just nodded and leaned into Jake’s side, feeling the chill of the night on your arms. “Let’s get you in the car.” Jake picked up his speed, causing you to also. Seeing the car in the close distance, he pressed the automatic start button on the key fob so the heat would go ahead and kick on for you.
You verbally thanked Jake for that because when you got seated in the car, it was already nice and warm for you, including your seat warmer. You hated the console of Jake’s car, since it kept you away from Jake, you wanted to stay by his side, tucked under his arm, every possible second. You decided that leaning over it was enough for now until you two arrived at your house.
Feeling your head on his shoulder, Jake chuckled and asked, “Can’t get enough of me?”
The end of his sentence trailed on when he heard your seatbelt click off and he felt your lips on his neck, kissing, sucking, and licking at his skin, and specifically his sweet spot. “Babe, I’m driving, we can mess around once we get back to your house.” He tried keeping his eyes open, but when you started palming him through his pants, his eyes fluttered close. “Hmm, pull over. Want you in my mouth, now.” Whispering your demand in his ear and licking the shell, he swallowed and put on his turn signal, indicating that he was pulling over to the side of the road.
At least it was dark, and Jake took the back roads to your house, so there weren’t many other cars around. “You helped me this week, and I haven’t returned the favor. Which I felt bad about, let me make it up to you, please.” You pouted up at him and pawed at his pants. “Please, Jake, let me suck you off.” His breath was heavy, and you hadn’t even done anything yet, he nodded and lifted his hips up after he removed his seatbelt.
You unzipped his pants and pulled them down. Before he could say anything, you were mouthing around the outline of his dick. Licking him through his boxer briefs and kissing at the wet spot that had started to form at his tip.
“Please, don’t tease, you make me so hard, need to cum.” You listened to his whines of need and pulled down his briefs. Even in the dark, you could tell that his dick was pretty, you nuzzled your cheek into his cock like you did with his neck. “Jake, you’re so big.” You mewled when the weight of his hand landed on your head and tugged on your hair.
Raising your head, you traced your lips with his tip, lining your lips with his pre-cum. After one whine to hurry up, you took Jake into your mouth. Your tongue felt around, finding a prominent vein and you took him out of your mouth, letting go of him with a pop. You returned to that vein and licked it up and down, sucking along it. Jake’s moans filled the car, ‘So High’ by Doja Cat was in the background, and of course, the sucking noise you were making.
“I need to be in your throat.” Jake took your head in his hands and returned it with your mouth hovering open above his dick. You took the tip in by yourself, and Jake pushed you down the rest of the way. Your nose meeting the little patch of hair at his pelvic bone with a gag.
You moaned around his dick and relaxed your throat, allowing Jake to do whatever he wanted with you. And he did. He started bucking his hips into your face, fucking your mouth at the pace he wanted, at the pace that was gonna help him cum down your throat.
You started trying to talk, not having much luck with him down your throat, but Jake noticed and pulled you off of him. “Wait, I, Jake, I want you to cum in me.” Jake could see your face slightly with the light from the moon shining in. Tears were running down your cheeks and drool and pre-cum were sticking to face.
“You’re so fucking pretty; I’ll do anything you want.” He told you to get in the back seat and of course you listened. He smacked your ass while you were climbing over the console, with twisting his shoulders and letting out a few grunts, Jake followed. “Take off your shirt and bra, wanna see your tits bounce when you ride me.” The words were muffled when Jake pulled his shirt over his head, but you were able to make the words out. While you were working on your bra, Jake reached over to you and unbuttoned and unzipped your jeans, and then tugged them down when you lifted your butt off the seat.
When you and Jake actually looked at each other again, both of you were fully naked. Jake made the first move by holding the back of your neck and slamming his lips into yours. Jake spread his legs and pulled you over to him, maneuvering you to straddle him.
“Oh my god. I can feel you dripping on me.” You looked away when Jake started to blindly explore your soaking pussy. “Hmm, what a messy girl, can’t help but get wet at giving me head. My cock whore.” You whined from being so flustered but then whined from pleasure.  Jake teased your cunt with his cock before prodding at your quivering hole.
You didn’t like how slow Jake was being, so you raised your hips and bottoming out yourself. Both you and Jake cursed and threw your heads back, finally being able to feel each other after all the teasing. “So wet and warm and tight”, Jake gritted his teeth when you tightened around him. “So big, Jake, too much, oh fuck, please.”
“It isn’t too much, you wanted this, and you’re going to be good for me and take it all. Now ride me.” He smacked your thigh hard and leaned back. You placed your hands on his chest and started bouncing on his cock, raising your hips enough where just the tip was inside and then bottoming out completely once again. You continued doing that, moaning loudly when Jake hit your g-spot or when he started playing with your tits.
The steamy atmosphere was ruined by your phone ringing. Jake tried to get you to ignore it, but it could’ve been important, so you reached for your jeans, with Jake still balls deep inside of you. You grimaced at the caller though. “Who is it?” “Sunghoon.” You were about to toss your phone back to where your jeans were wadded up, but Jake wanted otherwise. “Answer it.” Your walls tensed, and Jake laughed. “I know you like the idea, so answer it before it stops ringing. Now.” You listened.
“Hey Sunghoon, what’s up?” You tried keeping your voice even and when Jake reached towards your phone to put him on speaker, you gulped. “Nothing much, Sunoo and Jungwon got on to my ass about what I said to you, so I just wanted to apologize.” When it was time for you to respond, Jake started trusting into you again. “It-It’s okay-y S-Sunghoon.”
Oh no. Sunghoon and you both stopped breathing, Jake however was very proud. He got you to moan Sunghoon’s name. “Y/n, are you alright?” Your face was burning, and your head started to fog. “Yeah Hoon, she’s just fine.” The smugness in Jake’s voice traveled well through the phone and Sunghoon immediately understood.
“Oh my god, are you serious right now?” You whined into the phone when Jake started to continuously hit your g-spot. “Why? Are you jealous Hoon? Hang up if you don’t wanna listen, or do you want more?” Nothing was said on either line, but Sunghoon hasn’t hung up and that made you more flustered.
The silence was broken until Sunghoon spoke up, “I-I wanna see her.” You gasped in surprise and Jake’s smirk grew. “I had a feeling you would Hoon.” Jake clicked the video chat button and turned on his flash. “Smile and moan for Hoon, baby.” You tried to smile at the camera, but it was ruined by Jake pinching your clit, “Fuck, Jake, Sunghoon, please!”
Heavy breathing was coming from both males. Jake moved his body so he could push you down to lay on the seat. He kneeled above you and shone the flash of his phone down on you. When it hit your eyes, you squinted, and your face scrunched but it didn’t stay on your face. Jake panned the phone to your tits, and smacked them both, showing Sunghoon how they jiggled. “Jake, show me her pussy please.”
“Hoon~” Sunghoon moaned at the sound of you whining his name, not Jake’s too, just his. “Aw, babe, do you hear that? Hoon is jerking off to your body, I can’t blame him thought, you're just so sexy. My perfect little fuckdoll.” You tried to close your legs when Jake was showing Sunghoon, but he slapped your pussy, feeling your arousal splatter on his abs. “Man, only if you could feel this pussy, it’s so fucking wet.”
Jake was still in you during this and when he showed Sunghoon, he pulled out and slowly pushed in. Allowing him to see your back arch up and your cum covering Jake’s cock. “Look at that creamy cunt.” Sunghoon said through a moan and with Jake quickening his pace, you felt yourself coming close to the edge.
“Jake, I’m gonna cum.” Jake frowned and shook his head, eyes locked on your pussy convulsing around his dick. “No, baby, I don’t want you to cum. I want you to squirt, squirt like you did for me the other day. Squirt for Sunghoon.”
Both you and Hoon gasped, and Jake started circling the pad of his thumb on your pulsing clit. “Come on, I know you can do it, just let go for me.” You couldn’t stop moving and you couldn’t do anything to prevent what was going to happen.
Jake hit your spot once more and the name you screamed wasn’t his, but Jake didn’t care. Jake thrusted in you one last time, filling you up with his cum even with the liquid shooting out of your body. Your breathing was unsteady, and your thighs kept twitching even after Jake pulled out.
Even though you and Jake had finished, Sunghoon wasn’t. He moaned your name and, “Dude, show me her pussy, wanna see it all shiny and swollen.” Jake lifted on of your legs up and over the head of the backseat and the other over the console, so your foot was in the passenger seat in the front. Now, Sunghoon could see everything, both of your most intimate holes on display for his greedy eyes.
He watched Jake’s cum drip out of your pussy and down your ass to puddle on the seat. His cum wasn’t the only thing that was dripping, from you squirting there was a sheen on the seat, your thighs, and on your pussy, which looked destroyed. It was red and swollen and Sunghoon could only wish that it was him who did this to you.
“Let me see her face.” Jake complied and Hoon’s groans grew louder and more constant, Jake turned the phone and flipped the camera so you and Sunghoon would be looking at each other. Sunghoon whispered your name and threw his head back. Cumming into his fist, which you wanted to watch more than anything. “Sunghoon” you whimpered when Jake flicked your clit just to get you to whine the other man’s name again.

Nimona, the 2011-14 webcomic by ND Stevenson, turned into a graphic novel published on May 12, 2015, and adapted into a full cast audiobook on October 4, 2016, has been adapted into an animated movie!
The movie premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 14, 2023. Netflix released a teaser trailer on May 18, 2023, a clip on June 8, 2023, a full trailer on June 14, 2023, another big clip on June 21, 2023, more footage on June 22, 2023, and another big clip on June 27, 2023. The movie released in select theaters starting on June 23.
The movie released on June 30, 2023 on Netflix for streaming! You can also view the movie for free, legally, on YouTube, until February 26th, 2024. Netflix also released a free-to-read digital-only multimedia 358-page artbook for the movie.
For simplified background, Disney cancelled the movie in 2021, but on April 11, 2022, it was announced that Annapurna would produce the movie, DNEG would animate it, and Netflix would distribute it for streaming sometime in 2023. I'm seeing a lot of confusion out there, so I'll make a summary of what else we know. I also keep the Nimona movie fanwiki page up to date with more info as it releases. Other good places to get news: ND Stevenson's twitter, his Tumblr, his personal site, the savenimona twitter, and the movie page on Netflix. While managing the fanwiki I found that Wikipedia's reference articles for the movie were kind of terrible and often quoted things not being said in the articles being quoted, even in their archive versions, so I would stick with first-hand accounts where possible, particularly what's coming from folks working on the movie and the companies making it. Below is a more detailed summary of info.
Nimona by ND Stevenson began life as a school project while Nate was in college. He was a tumblrite and posted the first pages on Tumblr on December 14, 2011. On June 19, 2012, he began publishing the webcomic in full on its own site. Sometime before November 2012, it was contracted for publication as a graphic novel after completion. The webcomic ended on September 30, 2014, and was released as a single graphic novel in entirety on May 12, 2015. It has currently been translated into 16 languages. Nate adapted it into a full cast audiobook that released on October 4, 2016 (you can hear a preview and purchase it via the link above). The graphic novel and audiobook are still available for purchase.
Apologies for maybe getting studio names wrong, some have changed over time. Anyway: the movie rights for Nimona were acquired by 20th Century Fox Animation in June 2015, to be produced by Blue Sky Studios. In June 2017, Fox scheduled the movie to be released on February 14, 2020. Patrick Osbourne was brought on as director, and it was planned to have the movie in the style of Paperman (Osbourne was animation supervisor of Paperman (2012), and went on to direct Feast (2015), which used the same style). After Disney acquired 20th Century Animation (as it was later called), the movie was delayed to March 5, 2021. There was reportedly pushback for queer stuff in the movie. Blue Sky is publicly stated to have shutdown due to the pandemic and money issues, which isn't relevant here, and I would be careful spreading rumors it was for other reasons. A lot of "successful" US companies shut down studios and departments en masse for other very dumb reasons, particularly in recent years, sometimes just because they aren't making as much money as their parent/shareholders wants them to and cutting salaries makes your profits look better to shareholders. The important part is: Blue Sky was being shut down, and Disney officially cancelled the movie in February 2021.
At some point around the cancellation, a video compilation of early release footage and sculpts seemingly from someone involved in the movie's production was released online. It was later taken down, but put back up by iO9 after the Annapurna, DNEG, Netflix production was announced.
After Disney shuttered Blue Sky, according to Variety, the Nimona crew, "led by former Blue Sky co-presidents Andrew Millstein and Robert Baird, shopped the animatic around town. The film caught the attention of Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison, who was familiar with the film and had been tracking the project. “I think anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or like an outsider will connect with N.D. Stevenson’s story like I did,” she said in press material for the film. “When I watched the storyboard reels I immediately fell in love with it. Nothing about it felt conventional or built off market research. It’s bold and mischievous and full of love. Nimona has such a powerful voice.”
Annapurna stepped in and signed up Millstein and Baird as executive producers. They created Shapeshifter Films so the team could finish “Nimona,” and subsequently joined the company, forming Annapurna Animation.
DNEG Animation was hired in the spring of 2021 to help with the animation, becoming collaborators on the film."
On April 11, 2022, it was announced that the film would be produced by Annapurna, animated by DNEG, and distributed by Netflix. Netflix also shared the first summary:
"A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone."
Between Netflix's posts and DNEG's Nimona page, as well as folks involved with the film talking about it, and new info released after the Annecy Film Festival announcement, we knew it would release in Summer 2023. Netflix released a primary cast article with images of what the characters look like from Netflix (be warned, both are very spoilery).
What is also interesting about the cast listings is that Ballister's last name was changed from Blackheart to Boldheart.
Sources for Business Insider said that Blue Sky's work would be incorporated into the film somehow. The second production seemingly wasn't started from scratch, and members of the Blue Sky production stayed on to work on the project. This makes sense, given the art was quite similar to what was in that footage released around the film's cancellation in 2021. DNEG crew have stated repeatedly, though, that although they did have a lot of material from the Blue Sky production, they had to make a lot of things from the ground up.
Quane released an official shot from the film on January 4, 2023:
Tumblr media
It was announced that the movie would premiere on June 14, 2023, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. (Post on Annecy's site, post on DNEG's site)
Two new stills were also released on April 25, 2023, with the Annecy Film Festival announcement:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On May 10, 2023, Netflix posted a new image for the movie:
Tumblr media
The May 10 article also had a new movie summary:
"When Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shape-shifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to… just wreak serious havoc.
Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, Nimona is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are."
Tumblr media
Netflix released another still on May 17, 2023. On May 18, they released their teaser, the movie's first poster, and the announcement of the June 30, 2023 general streaming release date!
Netflix also added a new preview image to the Nimona page on the app, featuring Ballister and Ambrosius facing off behind Nimona.
Tumblr media
And Netflix started selling Nimona plushies! Amazon (and possibly other vendors) are also selling shirts/jackets with official movie art!
Netflix released more footage of the movie on May 24, 2023! (it's around 6:31 in the video).
Empire magazine released another still for the movie on June 7, 2023, as well as an article in their June 8, 2023 issue.
Tumblr media
Variety released a new still on June 11, 2023.
Tumblr media
Netflix released a new poster on Jun 13, 2023!
Tumblr media
More stills were released in an Entertainment Weekly article on June 14, 2023. And Netflix released even more. More teasers were put up on the Netflix app (though these are quite spoilery, so I'd advise avoiding them). The cast and crew did press tours throughout June 2023.
Again, the Nimona movie fanwiki page has more detailed info on all this.

Let's Get Married (Chapter 1)
Tumblr media
Lee Do Hyun x Reader
Words: 3k
Summary: cute first date and your husband reveals himself.
Note: Not proof read. I don't even know.
Lets get married Masterlist
Preview
-----
You get off your van after a 2 hour drive to a ski resort. It was sunny but also very cold, considering it was still March. Still a very beautiful day out. You could see the slopes covered in snow. You put your hand on your head to give your eyes shade from all the sun and look at the slopes.
You feel your phone buzz in your pocket. “Its Woo-sung” you mutter to yourself. Kim Woo-sung was the lead singer from the popular band, ‘The Rose’ and a close friend. Being a Korean that has lived your developmental years in London. You and Woo-sung clicked on multiple levels and became really fast friends. You’ve been friends for about 7 years now and also collaborated on music together. He was one of your close friends.
You had told him about you doing this show and meet a husband when you met him over lunch a week ago and all he did was laugh at your face.
—-
“It’ll be fun” you tried to justify it but that didn’t stop him from telling you how crazy this idea was. “Just make sure you don’t ACTUALLY fall for this guy” he warned you while taking a bite of his food.
“Depends on who it is” you smirk and he shakes his head.
“You’re in trouble already”
“Its a TV show, he’s going to be very handsome!” You counter.
“If you’re going to fall in love with every handsome guy there is, we have a problem” he says pointing at himself, claiming he’s handsome too.
You laugh at that and like clock work accidentally also inhale the food you were eating and end up choking on it.
“Yah, it's not that unbelievable for you to choke like this” he sneers at you.
You settle down smiling and shaking your head.
——
You bring out the phone from the pocket of your beige puff jacket and look at it. It was so bright out you couldn’t see the screen, you have to put your other hand over the screen to text him back. He had sent a “fighting~” text for you to meet your husband. You chuckle at that and respond a quick thank you.
You had never gone skiing before and but you did a lot of skateboarding before, it should be similar right?
You end up going to the green room they prepped for you to change into a ski suit with the goggles. Your hair was in braids. You were very nervous to meet this husband of yours. This was as good as an arranged marriage by the production crew. You chuckle at your thought. You made a mental list of people they could possible arrange for. Ha seok jin? Lee sang yeob? You were friends with both having worked on previous projects together.
You slowly walk out to go to the place where they were filming. One of the staff members come up to you and tell you that you can be and say whatever you want. Try to guess who is it, he would also try to guess who you are and you can reveal when we ask you to, okay?” You nod at her Instructions and go on in front of the camera. You start monologuing waiting for your husband. “I’m hoping it’s someone I already know so there’s no awkward phase, Im really quiet with new people initially” you say to the camera.
“But I will try my best today!” You exclaim and shoot finger guns at the camera. Soon enough, a man clad in a similar suit walks into view with a snowboard in hand. You were so nervous, you hadn’t been this nervous since your first stage as a kpop idol. You started to shift weight from leg to leg, almost bouncing in place.
“Who is this? Im so curious” you say out loud to no one in particular. You hear the man chuckle. It was a deep chuckle. “What? The chuckle is also so attractive, what do I do?” You say to yourself forgetting you had a mic on you and it would be heard.
“Hello!“ the man says and bows to you. You bow back at him getting surprised. “Wait, I recognise this voice” you say trying really hard to think where you’ve heard it before so you can guess who it is.
“Don’t guess so early or we won’t have content to shoot today” the man says in a different voice this time so you don’t catch on. “Thats not fair you’re changing your voice” you whine playfully.
You check him out from head to toe. “Wait a minute we’re wearing similar suits, is this a couples suit” he asks and stands next to you.You chuckle this time.
“I am-“ you bow and realise you’re not supposed to introduce yourself. “I almost introduced myself” you giggle at yourself. “I must be very nervous”
You laughs with you. “Don’t be” there is a bit of awkward silence before he asks you to get on the gondola with you to get to the top of the slope. You nod and follow him with your board.
“Have you been snowboarding before?” He asks you. You shake your head keeping talking to the minimal because you still didn’t know who this person is. “I skateboard though, it should be pretty similar” you reply.
“It is, don’t worry” you smile at him.
“Can you give me a hint about your identity” he asks you while the gondola moves upwards. Heights scare you a little so you are holding on to the railing for dear life. You could barely concentrate on the conversation. “I am.. a musician turned actress” you say without thinking. Thats a big hint. “Did you recently do a drama?” He continues but you stop him. “My turn, what do you do?” You ask trying not to look at the height you’re at.
“I’m an actor too” you hear his voice. His voice seems so familiar to you, but you can’t pinpoint.
“Ah, sunbaenim” you say and bow your head while sitting to show respect. “Please don’t” he chuckles to fill the awkward air.
“Are you scared of heights?” He asks you, looking at how uncomfortable you were in the ride. You nod to that question. “A little bit”
“Do you have a dog?” You ask him and he nods. “I do” he stopped himself before spilling the name. “Damn it I thought you’d tell me its name” you say to him and you hear his chuckle again.
“Have we met? You seem so familiar” you say but he interrupts.
“Its my turn to ask, what agency are you under” that question could possibly barrow down a lot of people. Right on cue, it was time to get off the ride because you were on the top.
“Whats your personality type?” You ask while getting down and he helps you with your board so you don’t fall over.
“ENTP” he tells you and you almost jump in excitement and let out a squeal. “What? What happened?” He sounded startled. “I’m an INFJ, ENTPs are my most compatible type, but I have no ENTP friends” you exclaim. You’re usually not this talkative. Why is it so easy to talk to him? Is it because you’re curious? Or is it because you don’t even know who it is? You couldn’t figure it out. He keeps chuckling at you. “Cute” you hear him say and that makes you blush a little.
The PD asks you if you have a guess and both of you nod.
“Loser goes first” you hear him say. And you like a challenge. “Call”
“Answer!” You raise your hand. “Seo Kang Joon sunbaenim” you answer expectantly. You hear the “ddaeng” sound and you hiss. You got it wrong. It wasn’t Seo Kang Joon. You look over and the man next to yells “Answer”
“Kim Sejeong” you chuckle because its clearly the wrong answer. You’re not Kim sejeong.
“What? I thought I was on the money” he mutters to himself while you hear it and giggle. “I guess we’ll have to go together” he says.
“You can reveal your faces now” the PD says and you ask yourself if this is the masked singer.
“Ladies first” the man next to you says.
“Everyone. Are you ready?” You ask the camera as you take off your goggle’s and pull down your jacket to reveal your face.
“Tada! I’m (your full name) nice to meet you” you say into the camera first before looking over at him.
“Ah, right, candy candy candy” he sings one of your songs and does the dance as well. That makes you happy and proud. “You’re right” you exclaim and do the step with him both of you laughing. You were very eager to meet your husband.
“Aigoo, My wife is pretty” he says as he takes of his goggles and pulls his jacket down enough to see his dimpled smile and puppy eyes.
No way.
Lee Do Hyun.
“What?” You could barely get a word out. You almost choked on your own spit. I think its time to wake up if this is a vivid dream. You tell yourself. “What are you doing here?” You ask straight up then you realise you barely know him. “Is this why I found your voice so familiar, what?” You are still in disbelief. You end up turning and walking in your place trying to calm yourself down. You could feel your legs give out. Six months of living with him? This is definitely a vivid dream. Wake up. It’s not funny anymore.
“I’m Lee Do Hyun” he introduces himself while you are punching the snow under you because your legs gave out you. You were hiding your face because it had gone so red. It felt like all the blood in your body was now in your face.
“No way” you keep saying holding your face and it compose yourself and get back up. All you hear is his chuckling. He holds his hand out for you to shake. You hesitantly give him one of your hands to shake.
“Im sorry” you apologise for your behaviour but you were absolutely thrilled.
“I heard I’m your ideal type” he mentions and your face flushes again. “Well yeah” you mutter somehow.
“Thats good to know, I think we’ll get along really well” he says and lets go of your hand.
You nod being all shy. You’re still in disbelief but your luck has shined. You didn’t realise if you kept saying he was your ideal type he’s end up in your life like this.
“You were talkative a minute ago what happened? Am I scary?” He asks smiling. Honestly you could stare at those puppy eyes all day. You snap out of it and say “nothing, I’m just a little shocked that you’re here” you quietly say feeling very conscious about yourself.
“I’m glad I’m here too” he smiles. “It’s penalty time” he says holds out his hand again for you to take it.
“You’ve never snowboarded before right?” He asks you and you shake your head. Your eyes and cheeks were all red and you know its not because of the cold. It’s because of the man standing in front of you holding his hand out for you to take. You put your hand in his and he guides you to the edge of the slope. You strap yourself in and he does it too.
“Jump and push yourself down the slope” he says. “The rest is just like skateboarding”
You nod and do as he tells you, you go a few meters and fall on your butt. This was so embarrassing. “Why am I here? What I am doing” you mutter to yourself while getting up and shaking off the snow from your body.
“Was snowboarding your date idea?” You ask him.
Before the shooting started, the staff asked you to list down a bunch of date ideas you wanted to try out.
“It was” he nods and takes off like a pro snowboarding.
You try your best and realise its really not the same as skateboarding. You kept falling but the best part was that DoHyun offered a helping hand almost every time you fell. You had more reasons to fall. He was now teaching your holding both your hands how to balance on the snowboard. This time you almost fell face first but his had a tight grip on your hands and didn’t let you fall. “This is so tough” you say. “Its nothing like skateboarding” you playfully glare at him.
“You’re just bad at this” he claps back teasing you. You fake gasp. “Rude” but so handsome.
You give up and sit on your butt with the board still attached to your feet watching do hyun have the time of his life. You decide to be a little mischievous and roll up a ball of snow to throw at him. You see him from far away hurling towards you at full speed, you are ready to scream at collision and your hands come up to your body and face instinctively to protect yourself. But the collision never happened, he stopped perfectly in front of you. “You scared me” you say smiling and throw a bit of snow at him.
He giggles and throws some snow at you as well. You unbuckle your board and say “you’re dead Lee Do Hyun”, your playfulness over takes your shyness in front of him and you chase him down to throw some snow at him.
The day ended in giggles and laughter, which you were grateful about. You also clicked a few pictures for Instagram. You still couldn’t believe you were on a date with your ideal type and you will be shooting everyday for the next six months. It was absurd.
They decided to put you in a bus and film you on the way back and also get some late lunch together. This would be your first meal together. You decide to change back into your casual comfortable jeans and head to the bus, he was already sitting on the seat. “I saved you a seat” you hear him say and that makes you laugh. The whole bus was for the both of you. There was no need for him to save a seat for you.
You sit down and fix your hair before leaning on the seat. He plays drums on his thighs and suddenly turns to look at you. “Are you allergic to anything?” He asks you and you shake your head.
“I’m just trying to be a good husband, a good husband should know” he teases and this is the nth number of time you’ve gotten as red as a tomato because of something Dohyun has said.
You only get a week of dating before you move in. It’s as good as speed dating.
“What are you saying?” You mutter totally caught off guard by his husband comment and his cheesy lines.
“How old are you?” He asks in the most polite tone possible. You realise something.
“Ah right, we’re the same age” you realise you can drop the honourifics.
“Thats great, would you like to drop the honourifics?” He asks you. “Lets be friends” he continues.
“Yah Lee Do hyun, whats the matter with you?” You ask teasingly in a very friendly and not so polite tone.
“I like that, I like things like this” he says smiling.
“Yah (yn) what are you doing let's listen to some of your songs” he tries to get rid of the awkwardness in the air.
You giggle at his attempt and the way he dropped honourifics almost immediately.
“Yah Lee Do hyun” you almost yell at him. “What (yfn)?” He responds in the same tone. There was silence.
Your eyes met. You wanted to laugh so hard, you could barely stifle it. You end up laughing together losing it at the same time.
“Good, I like this” he says and pulls out his phone and air-pods. He offers one to you and you put it in your ear.
“Okay, guess the song, I’ll play a second” he says starting another game. You nod. “Okay”
He plays a few of your songs, you dance to a few of your songs together sitting in the bus seat and a few new songs you’ve never heard before. It was fun, he was fun to be around. His randomness made you laugh a lot. Best part is he knew all the girl group dances. Slowly there is silence in the bus because both of you got sleepy. You end up taking a power nap for 30 minutes before arriving at Seoul for lunch.
You end up ordering a lot and the food comes in. You both eat very silently because you were that hungry and tired.
“You eat very well” he says and you nod. “Ive been noticing you only respond to what I say, why don’t you talk to me?” He playfully pouts.
Your heart melts. You’ve seen it on TV before but no way did you think you’d see that in real life.
“Yah, say something, it’s awkward” he says shuddering. You apologise because you ended up staring at him for a bit too long.
“Do you want to exchange phone numbers?” You ask and he nods. “Right, how will I contact my wife if I don’t have her number?” he says hastily and passes the phone to you. As soon as you open the phone, it gets snatched away again and you see him hold his phone and secretly check something while hiding it from you.
You playfully smack his thigh softly.
“Yah I didn’t see anything, were you watch some weird things?” You ask smirking.
“No I was not” you hear him say while he taps away at his phone before returning it to you.
You save yourself as your name but he notices that. “Save it as wife with a heart cmon” he teases and you blush furiously. His whole body cringes at what he said. “Cant believe I said that” and you laugh at that. Regardless you change your name to wife and a heart and he sends you a sticker on chat so you can save his number. “You better save it as husband with a heart” he threatens.
“Sure” you say and save it as his name instead. “Done” you say and put your phone down. He immediately gives you a call so your phone lights up. It was just his name and sunbaenim.
“Yah, my wife is a cold person, why’d you add sunbaenim too?” He pretends to be hurt. “Im wounded” he holds his chest acting like it hurts.
“Fine fine, stop the acting, mister” you say and pick up your phone to change the name again, this time to ‘husband <3’ aa he looks into your phone over your shoulder. “Happy?” You ask showing him the phone. “Very much so, thank you” he says grinning.
You finish eating and part ways with Do hyun.
“Today was fun, work didn’t feel like work” he says and you nod. “I agree, I think we should keep this fun, like an escape from our normal schedules” you say.
“Sounds like a good plan, wife” he says and you smack his arm. “Stop” you say to him blushing. “What? I’m just getting used to it” he defends and you couldn’t stop smiling, your jaw was hurting from how much you smiled and laughed around him today.
You end up exchanging a bunch of stickers on chat and go about the rest of your schedule with the date constantly replaying on your mind.
————
“And it was ACTUALLY Lee Do hyun” you squeal at Woosung who had come over to hang out to drink beer and eat chicken. You were currently on the floor laying in disbelief because you were still not over the fact that your pretend ‘husband’ was going to Lee Do hyun. You kick your feet because you didn’t know what to do. You were so excited for this
“I think I manifested him into my life at this point”
“I do remember you being absolutely obsessed with him a year ago”
“Right?”
“Does this mean you’re actually going to try to fall in love with this man?” He asks you and you put your hands over your eyes laying down.
“I love him as a fan, A big fan, but this is different” there is silence. You sit up suddenly realising something.
“What if… he’s not the person I have in my mind?” You were concerned that knowing him would change things.
“It will shatter your delusion, for sure” he calls you out.
You throw a pillow at him. “You don’t have to be this real.”
——
You kept thinking about this before bed all tucked in, you had an idea of what Lee Do Hyun is like on camera, you didn’t not know him off camera. What if he’s not to person you’ve seen in interviews, of course there is more to a person but it scared you. What if he is completely different than what you had imagined, it would break your heart.
You are snapped out of your thoughts when your phone buzzes.
It was a text from your ‘husband’
Sleep well Wifey. :P
But what if he is exactly how you think of him?
----
I don't know.

MONKEYBONE
Here are some pre-production drawings done for MONKEYBONE, a film directed by Henry Selick. I worked on the film very briefly, perhaps only a week or two, helping with story beat boards. It was a fun gig, in part due to the location in The Presidio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nowadays The Presidio is one of the jewels of San Francisco - a truly beautiful parkland for residents to play in - but when I first arrived in San Francisco, it was still a functioning military base. It was already known that it would soon close, however. So discussion about what was next for the site bubbled for the first few years that I lived here. Would it become low income housing? Or yet another swanky property development, as seemed likely. Who else but big money could pay for the cleanup required after the military had left so many toxic cooties (asbestos etc) behind?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, while such things were being decided, some of the abandoned buildings would be rented out for short term projects, one being an animated/live action comedy, that was in pre-production circa 1998 (adapted from a graphic novel - DARKTOWN  by Kaja Blackley & Vanessa Chong). I worked on MONKEYBONE in the early, eager, happy, anything-is-possible phase. It may have been so early that our work was merely a proposal, before a ‘green light’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry himself was in a great spirits, now that he was out of the shadow of Tim Burton, and Chris Columbus was his exec producer. Many of the crew were Henry’s old cronies from Nightmare Before Christmas, such as production designer Bill Boes. He’d already built models of some of the sets & locations, and these were great reference. With a tiny lipstick camera we could shoot the models from all kinds of angles, and this was enormously helpful, allowing myself & Lawrence Marvitt to bang out panels relatively quickly, under the guidance of Mike Cachuela.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many things had not yet been decided on, such as casting. The protagonist in my sketches here was based on Nicolas Cage, but of course Brendan Fraser got the role of of Stu. Other roles were played by Rose McGowan, Dave Foley, Bob Odenkirk, John Turturro, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Kattan and even Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito. The final film really had an amazing cast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Presidio was not yet full of dining options, but our workspace wasn’t far from the Presidio gates, where we’d have lunch at Liverpool Lil’s, a great little pub (that has recently burned down, sadly). I also remember a really fun swanky dinner (I forget now where) with the entire tiny pre-pro crew, where Henry was in a jovial mood and writer Sam Hamm was too. Both hilariously regaling us with their Hollywood horror stories (and comparing their scars inflicted by Tim Burton). Best of all, someone else picked up the exorbitant check! (I think it was Sam Hamm?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Years after my brief stint on MONKEYBONE I got an invite to a preview screening in early 2001. The film was madcap, weird, & even disturbing at times. Much of what I’d thought would be animated was actually handled with costumed humans in the final film, surprisingly. But it was exciting to have worked on a feature film that actually got made. This was a period where I worked on many great projects that collapsed before making it to the screen. I remember enjoying it until the very end, when I saw that I hadn't got a credit (I hadn't worked on it long enough apparently). In the lobby after the screening, there were a lot of concerned/worried/disappointed faces. Whereas I was bummed that my name was was not in the credits, many people seemed unhappy that their names were.
Ha ha!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure enough, the film was a financial & critical flop and has low score to this very day (despite a tiny subset of viewers who still love it, and look back on it fondly). I learned that there had been much tussling along the way to the screen. Perhaps the guy who'd done Home Alone was not the right choice to ‘mentor’ Henry? Did things go sideways after Rupert Murdoch fired Bill Mechanic? Or was it merely typical studio meddling? My guess is it was another case of AOTA: all of the above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry himself sums up MONKEYBONE this way:
"I have two thoughts: it never would have been a big hit. It certainly would have done better if they advertised it a little... I would still like to do a Director's Cut because there's a lot of cool stuff that was removed... my main lesson learned is, I don't really do well in the live-action universe... I love my world of stop-motion... I went down a slippery slope to make Monkeybone, but the film that came out it's not my vision of what the film could've been, and I just don't thrive in that.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not long after I worked there, the fate of The Presidio was finally decided when George Lucas’ proposal to develop The Letterman hospital into a media centre was accepted in 1999. And it became the mixed-use space SF residents play in today.
----
Just last weekend, we spent a day in The Presidio, enjoying its restaurants & bars and exploring the new Tunnel Tops park. As we strolled around, I tried to figure out which of The Presidio's many buildings we worked in in 1998, but couldn't pin it down (of course, the Letterman hospital complex was levelled to build what became ILM/Lucasfilm, so perhaps the buildings we worked in are gone).

Behind the Scenes of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday (Part 12) Excerpts from Benjamin Cook’s article in DWM #372
Of course, the ending of Doomsday was shrouded in secrecy right up until transmission.  Most of the crew didn't even know what was going on.
"We kept the beach scene as secret as possible," Russell explains, "and that scene wasn't included in the shooting script - just cos they have a tendency to be left lying around!  Also, bear in mind that it came slap bang in the middle of production, not at the end, so Billie still had five more episodes to film after that! The secret stayed secret for once."
And the very last scene?
"Ah, well, that was done quietly," smiles Russell, "with a small crew, at the end of a normal shooting day. And then we made a decision to cancel the BAFTA screening of Doomsday, and to not send out DVD preview copies, just to see how it would work. David Tennant pointed out that the tabloids had ruined every single twist in The Parting of the Ways, three days before! So this was a different tactic."

(IDOLiSH7) Torao Mido - An Idol's Daily Life Rabbit Chat: Part 4 - Preview screening with ŹOOĻ
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Tsumugi Takanashi: Good work today! I received some pound cake from Inumaru-san earlier.
Tsumugi Takanashi: He mentioned it was a thank-you present for the refreshments the other day and that you helped him pick it out. Thank you so much for going out of your way to do this...!
Torao Mido: He asked me for a shop that sells sweets you might like, so I just gave him a recommendation. It’s no big deal.
Torao Mido: It’s from a shop that’s also in our hotel, so I can vouch for the taste.
Tsumugi Takanashi: I've always wanted to try it; I'm really happy! It's a really popular place, so I wasn't able to buy any before...!
Tsumugi Takanashi:
Tumblr media
Tsumugi Takanashi: By the way, did you both manage to get home safely after you picked up Inumaru-san?
Torao Mido: Yeah, there was no problem. He was humming happily for a bit, then he fell asleep right away.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Mido-san's driving must've been really comfortable.
Tsumugi Takanashi:
Tumblr media
Torao Mido: Even so, I don’t want to do it again. Driving around a drunk guy isn't exactly my idea of fun.
Torao Mido: Well, I did get a thoughtful thank-you gift this time, so I guess I don't mind.
Tsumugi Takanashi: What did you get?
Torao Mido: Tickets to an upcoming American comic movie event in Tokyo. He got two, so he invited me to go with him.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Wow, that’s wonderful! I heard they’ll be showcasing the actual props used in the movie, and that a famous director will be visiting!
Torao Mido: You sure know a lot. So you were aware of the event too, huh.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Yes! Mitsuki-san is into it as well, and he was really happy to get tickets. I heard they were really hard to get.
Torao Mido: It’s a popular series. It’s common for these events to be held overseas, and since it’s rare for it to take place in Japan, I guess the demand was really high.
Tsumugi Takanashi:
1) Have you always liked American comic movies?
Torao Mido: Pretty much. I get why those action-packed stories of good versus evil are so popular. The huge production budgets make for impressive, large-scale films.
2) What do you like about American comic movies?
Torao Mido: The action is really powerful. It's a spectacle to watch on the big screen. Also, I think there are many who admire the protagonist's determination to stick to their beliefs despite facing challenges and dilemmas.
3) Do you also collect merchandise?
Torao Mido: Yeah, buying pamphlets and such is a must. It seems that plush toys are also popular lately. Indeed, I do often see women taking photos with plush toys in front of the movie theater banners.
Torao Mido: What kind of movies do you usually watch?
Tsumugi Takanashi: I enjoy watching movies featuring animals, but I also make sure to check out other popular films that are being talked about!
Tsumugi Takanashi: The other day, I went to see a movie featuring Natsume-san.
Torao Mido: Ah, the one with the androids, right? We also attended the preview screening for it. It was a movie worth watching.
Torao Mido: The CGI technology was impressive, and I could feel the director's attention to detail when it came to the psychological depiction.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Yes, truly… The scene where Natsume-san, playing the emotionless android, sheds tears for the first time after the professor's death was so poignant…!
Tsumugi Takanashi: I couldn't help but cry in the theater > <
Torao Mido: Minami's performance was remarkable. The way his seemingly emotionless expression gradually softened as the story progressed gave me goosebumps.
Torao Mido: Knowing him, he probably calculated every detail, from the movement of his gaze to the way his lips moved when speaking.
Tsumugi Takanashi: You could really sense the gradual emergence of emotions. I can't forget the look of happiness on Natsume-san's face when he smiled for the first time in the movie…
Torao Mido: Haruka said the same thing. He said that even if the movie's over, he's still going to remember it and feel like crying every time he sees Minami's face.
Tsumugi Takanashi: I get what he means. Even now, when I see Natsume-san on TV, I'm moved by how expressive he has become since then...
Torao Mido: You're dwelling on the movie too much.
Torao Mido: Well, it really was that good, so I understand your sentiment.
Torao Mido: I bet Minami would be happy if you told him.
Tsumugi Takanashi: I'll be sure to summarize my thoughts and impressions and send him a Rabbit Chat text!
End of Part 4.

Challengers (2024) | A review w/ spoilers*
Tumblr is not going to like my review, I already know. I acknowledge this movie wasn't made for me, but I feel I give credit where it's due.
Last night I had a staggering movie going experience. I felt like I was being sold a lie a minute sitting through the agonizing commercials, the movie previews, and till the end of Challengers. Back to back promos for military branches, painting them as organizations of peace and innovation (a rally during war time). I understand there’s nothing new about that experience. Consumerism and propaganda tactics have a long tradition at the cinema. We’ve been advertised a false reality for so long it’s hard to think about our world without using the images fed to us to line that canvas. Take how modern horror treats rural living. It’s very common to see (in fact I saw) a movie trailer where a young couple vacations in a secluded part of the country to get away from it all. The idea of ruralism as a peaceful alternative to stressful urban living is benign and actually has some merit to think about in a country as urbanized and unhappy as ours. Yet the common movie trope is that there are evil forces lurking in the dark outskirts, that living ‘out there’ turns people into kooks or murderous cultists. One movie by itself with this premise can be harmless, but within a whole genre that trends this way it feels insidious. Almost like we are supposed to all fear each other. Challengers is another example of a genre movie that warps human reality into a lifeless opportunity to sell things.
When a movie feels more like a commercial or a music video then why even bother with the movie going experience. The distinguishers between television and film are fading away over time. In one particularly unabashed scene we cut between three different product placements for Coke, Adidas, and the U.S. Open. It was shameless, the way Josh O’Connor was most likely told to hold that CocaCola label perfectly centered in the frame. Those three brands are far from the only ones displayed. Tennis, and sports events in general, flash a ton of advertising so I understand that the film’s stuck in that universe. Still there are ways to artfully sidestep brazen product placement.
I don’t want to spend much time trying to analyze the relationship between Tashi, Art and Patrick. The film doesn’t give you enough about why these three are fatefully attached to each other besides vapid attractions. Yes all three are enamored by one another but what’s the motivation to stay in this toxic ménage à trois dynamic for so long? Zendaya plays Tashi, a master manipulator trying to mold her husband Art Donaldson into the star tennis player she was supposed to be before her injury. And her “little white boys” Art and Patrick feel like pawns that are content to be pawns. Men who don’t have any freewill and are solely motivated by their lust for this supermodel of a woman. In a way I don’t blame them. My disconnect comes because there’s a lack of depth with the characters and their relationships. Each of them seems to have a singular focus; Tashi wants vicarious glory through Art, Art wants to be loved, and Patrick wants Art’s life. But there is no depth to the desires. Time is never spent on why Tashi loves tennis more than people or why Art and Pat let their, supposedly strong bond, get broken so easily by a “home wrecker” that forecasted her own home wrecking. And look, as a seductive art piece it succeeds, for the most part, but as a story about real people it reduces its characters to their base desires while pretending they are complex. Maybe I don’t understand Romance—as I’ve been told. I am content to treat it as just a romantic fantasy and give it credit for being hot, but it was also a long drawn out tease.
There was no reason for this experience to be more than two hours long! Half of it was in never ending slow-mo where I felt like the same tennis ball was being served for half an hour. The dreaded slow motion, which can be good for a sporty movie to capture athletic movements and build suspense, but here it was overused to a point where it left us thinking “get on with it already”.  Thank goodness some of my theater neighbors were also moaning about this because I felt alone, trapped in a drugged fugue state. So much of the film was disorienting. For a period you are meant to feel like a tennis ball being battered around through the camera. Editing wise this movie had the same problem that so many modern movies have; death from a thousand cuts. And the slowly unraveling chopped timeline executed so many arbitrary flashbacks and flash forwards. Eight weeks before, two days forward, then a five year flashback, all when you could tell this story sequentially with similar suspense building and less confusion.
Seeing this movie was a spur of the moment, going in blind experience. I know now that I was not the target audience. Today I mentioned it to a friend and he ended up watching the trailer. The text I got back: “looked like a bit of a teenager movie”. I don’t mean to spoil the enjoyment for anyone with this review. From a certain angle I did have fun with Challengers. Sometimes simply devouring some eye candy is what the mood demands.

The Cast of Hamlet (1964) in Musicals: Part 2
Like Richard Burton, John Cullum (Laertes) started his Broadway musical career in Camelot. He played Sir Dinadan, understudied King Arthur and Mordred, and eventually took over Mordred full-time. Unlike Burton, Cullum kept doing musicals. A lot of musicals. Let's look at some of them!
youtube
Cullum's next Broadway show after Hamlet was On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. This is a selection of scenes and songs from the show, narrated by Cyril Ritchard. Barbara Harris gets most of the material here, but watch it all anyway, she's delightful.
youtube
After joining the original production of 1776 as a replacement Edward Rutledge, Cullum got to do the role in the film and sing "Molasses to Rum," a tour de force about slavery and Northern hypocrisy.
youtube
The shows that Cullum opened in as a star tended to be modest hits at best. Shenandoah was probably his biggest personal success. It ran long enough that he left and came back! He won a Tony! He reprised his role in a revival! Which ran for a little over a month including previews. Ah well. I don't know Shenandoah that well. The plot seems... politically iffy? The lead's whole thing is that he doesn't want to pick a side in the Civil War. But Cullum sounds great!
youtube
He won another Tony for On the Twentieth Century! Here he sings "I've Got It All" with the great Judy Kaye. (TW for a rape mention, here are the lyrics if you want to read before watching.) They're out of costume, so you get to see his very '70s outfit. For what he looked like in costume, here's their Tony performance!
youtube
And then he didn't originate a role in a musical until Urinetown in 2001. I'm pretty sure this is where I first heard him.
youtube
Also he played a dog in The Grinch.
youtube
And Audra McDonald's dad in the revival of 110 in the Shade!
youtube
In 2010, Cullum was in The Scottsboro Boys as the Interlocutor, who forces the titular characters to reenact their story in the form of a minstrel show. It's a very good, very heavy musical.
Cullum was most recently on Broadway as a replacement in Waitress in 2017-18, but who knows, maybe he'll be back! He did a solo show in 2021 and a movie in 2022. Anyone out there writing roles for 94-year-olds?
