“Omg Edward and Bella are so Odysseus and Penelope coded” that’s how it sounds to me each time anyone compares a mlm ship to achilles and patroklos
#just say that you only know 3 mlm couples and move on#no one makes that kind of comparasions with straight couples no one#yknow why#because no one lumps them together! they are allowed to be different even if they have physical similarities!#yes this is specifically about rwrb heartstopper and yr#they are like the big three' regarding mIm fiction and i just dont get it??#plus they are ALWAYS compared to tsoa achilles and patroklos#sure theyre good but they are all treated like they are the same thing like all the characters are similar#spoiler alert they arent#(straight) people mix their personalities together to make a palpable smoothie that they can drink and say ‘oh im such an ally dont you see’#plus when comparing them to achilles and patroklus they mean tsoa patrochilles obviously#because their characters are SO BLAND in that book that their personality can be altered for personal enjoyment and still be same#‘alex and henry and charlie and nick and simon and wilhelm are SO achilles and patroclus😍🥺’#do you know literally any other mlm fictional couple? have you ever read a mlm book written by a gay guy?#because as far as i know heartstopper rwrb and yr arent made by gay guys#and while that is fine the representation is very good and alice and casey are both queer#i have the suspicion that the straight women that say that have never read anything writtenby a gay guy because i did and let me tell you#they write things very differently they are unapologetically queer they arent palpable to *that* straight audience#yknow i love casey and not saying their books arent queer (they absolutely are) but for example heartsopper since its idealized#its not something that make you feel the struggles and the hate etc so strsight audiences can binge on it without seeing themselves#reflected on the homophobic characters or have their own prejudices be turned upside down#anyway fck madeline miller fck fetishizing borderline homophobic women who only read mlm and for the love of god leave rwrb and yr ALONE#rwrb#young royals#heartstopper#achilles#patroklos#achilles and patroclus

Hi there! I've read every Hurt/Comfort Merlin fics you recommend. Thank you!! These were gorgeous. Do you have any other recommendations for hurt/comfort 👉👈?
More Hurt/Comfort? Hold my hot chocolate!
Tumblr media
It's physically improbable for me to go through all these at this point😂 but nevertheless! of course I'll rec you some!
1. Give Me Your Fear, I'll Give You My Faith by ironfamjam. I think this fic is one of the best H/C I've read recently. Merlin is cursed to lose all his senses while Arthur could only watch. The desperation you see in Arthur trying to save Merlin.. their communication beyond humane limitations.. the sheer understanding emanating between them.. it was all just amazing. So raw and beautiful. It's also written in TSOA writing style, so the emotions are practically flowing. Kudos to the author for slowly robbing us of our own senses while reading this.
2. The Patter of Tiny Feet on Cold Stone Floors by TheAvalonian. Whenever I get rec asks, I always go back and skim the fics to be absolutely sure of what I'm recommending. But in this one, I didn't need to do that. I read this fic nearly four years ago and it still rings in my heart the same way it did when I first read it. Just the perfect semblance of golden age with proper hurt. It truly did hurt. But the comfort in it made it worth the while. Definitely recommend it if you have time for a long one.
3. Winning A Battle by OhFantasyWorld. Oh how I love this fic. It's just so simply Merlin and Arthur. It perfectly captures the essence of their dynamic while Arthur was still an emotionally constipated prince. It also has a mysterious edge to it that makes it even the more interesting. You're left wondering all fic why Arthur is so sad and so drawn into his misery. Until the very end. And the H/C is 🤌. Really recommend.
4. A Story Behind Each by CaptainOzone. I really am w e a k for Scar Reveal fics. I think this as a trope is very underrated in our fandom. The sheer number of times we see Merlin getting hurt on Arthur's behalf is just insane. So much unused material. I really loved this one for how soft it was. And BAMF Merlin was crème de la crème. If it's a scars reveal AND a BAMF fic, then what more could we possibly ask for?
5. In the woods by transcastiel. A translation of MaryBarrens's fic. If you've been following me long enough, you must know by now how much I loathe S5E5 The Disir. Legit, I cannot even write all my thoughts down here from how much I hate it. This episode was all that went wrong. It was the hamartia of the show. Therefore, anyone who just writes two words as a fix-it for this fic, I'll kudos them to eternity. And even though this one is so short, but God it just perfectly captured what SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. This was what we deserved. This and nothing else.
------
* Have you read My heart is readily yours? Can't waste an opportunity to circle this one around since I consider it my greatest H/C creation. Or Arthur-in-desperation creation. Or Screaming-in-my-face-worthy creation. I took the hurt to some real extremes, and I don't regret a single thing.
------
Thank you for following my recs! Always happy to rec some more💖

O and I have an other question how do you think Achilles will react once he finds out about the fact that Patroclus had slept Deidameia. Because I do believe Patroclus haven’t to Achilles about it .
<3 <3 <3
Ah, the single plot point in TSoA I disagree with.
🎵How do you solve a problem like Pyrrhus🎶
So if we’re all gonna suck Homer’s dick, then let’s all get on the same page that Deidamia isn’t in the Iliad. Or the Odyssey. You also gotta be careful with any source material mentioning Deidamia as most of this content was part of a smear campaign by the Italians coughDantecough.
Pyrrhus is such a random character if you think about it. Achilles was not married, otherwise Agamemnon wouldn’t keep trying to get him to marry his seemingly endless supply of daughters. Pyrrhus isn’t labeled as a bastard, but what else could he be? Achilles would’ve had to have knocked up some chick.
And isn’t it strange that Achilles would do this? I don’t want to say it’s not in character, but it seems strange compared to his prophecy-focused life. (Also, Patroclus and Achilles don’t have little bastards running around the camp, so do we really believe they’re fucking the slaves? If they’re fucking the slaves, where are the babies? Birth control and abortions were not that good in 1250 BCE. But I’m getting super off topic now.)
This is why I personally believe Achilles found a random baby, adopted it, and had Mother feed him ambrosia.
I’m very passionate about ^this headcanon of mine.
Now back to TSoA…
First off, remember that Patroclus is a LIAR. He is not just full of bologna, he’s made out of bologna. He wants us to believe he’s a feminist? Anti-war? A doctor? Achilles is perfect? Patroclus PLEASE!
But you have to respect the lies because TSoA is essentially an autobiography and lying is like the first law of autobiography writing.
I’d also like to point out the clever literary trick at the end of TSoA. The book ends with Patroclus and Thetis chatting about Achilles. She says “Speak, then” to get Patroclus to share his memories. Thus, the book is not so much an account of his life, but essentially all the memories he had to share with her. He wants to show her how glorious her son was, the side she never got to see, the human nature she shunned, Achilles’ mortality. So of course he’s going to highlight the good, even enhance it as well as downplay or even lie about the bad.
But back to your question…
What happened at Skyros? Patroclus wants us to believe a lot of non-con was going on. I low-key have a very messed up theory about what actually happened and why it happened, but I don’t want to get into it rn a blogger on here might be unhappy bcs of a related ask I coincidentally just sent them. So for simplicity's sake, let’s assume that the non-con did indeed happen. I think he told Achilles a half-truth. Something to the effect of mentioning having comforted Deidamia and given her an official farewell (of the husbandly kind) on his behalf. He used a lot of double-meaning words to allow Achilles to interpret as he pleased.
And how did he interpret what Patroclus told him? First he was relieved that he would not have to deal with her again. Then he was his usual dumb blonde self (Patroclus calls this 'trusting', Pat pls) and took the words at face value. And I wouldn't blame him for it. When traumatic things happen to you, you do what you can to cope.
And please don’t take this as victim blaming or non-con denial, but the last lines of Chapter 13 never sat quite right with me.
Tumblr media
Sorry to keep harping on the lying. Part of me thinks the scene with Deidamia was either a hallucination-false memory sequence to reinforce that patrochilles is 2-bodies-1-soul -what happens to Achilles happens to Pat; and part of me thinks this was Pat’s sly way of showing Thetis how she hurt Achilles by enabling the non-con. Sadly, we'll never know the truth, so it's up to you what you want to believe.
I hope this rambling rant answered your question. Thank you for the ask! I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Song of Achilles and am capable of ranting and raving about it for hours at a time 😘

I’m sorry I’m back with more fic asks bc I can’t stop thinking about omega achilles he’s everything to me I would die for him 🥺💖
so for As Fate Would Have It:
7. How did you decide what character(s) would narrate the fic?
15. Talk about the characters’ struggles & how you decided on those
26. Share your favorite detail
Thank you so much for this ask!! Omega Achilles is EVERYTHING to me too!! He's soooo precious 🤧
7. How did you decide what characters would narrate the fic?
Honestly most of the time the decision is made for me haha. Like when I get an idea of a scene it's usually through the eyes of a specific character, and this time it was Patroclus so I went with him. I always love looking at Achilles through his eyes, and this AU is so satisfying for that because Achilles is such a weird little dude in it. But the fic will feature POVs from other characters as well, including Achilles and Thetis! So I'm really eager to get into those.
15. Talk about the characters' struggles and how you decided on those
Once again I'll be honest: I don't usually decide shit 😂🤣 Most of the time the struggles come up as I'm writing and fleshing out the story. As Fate Would Have It in particular was supposed to be something like 3-4 chapters long, with the first chapter covering their first meeting in Phthia and then a sort of time jump to Pelion. But the moment I started writing, Patroclus was soooo pissed off and frustrated and bitter that he had been chosen as therapon so I simply had to stick around and see *why* he's like that ahah. One of my favouriteeee parts of TSOA is how bitter and angry Patroclus is at the very beginning when they meet, how envious he is of Achilles' station, the little games they play trying to catch each other's eye in the dining hall but not actually talking to each other, and then how Pat snaps at Achilles when he finds him in the storage room. He's like a little feral cat and I absolutely ADORE that. I really wanted to play around with a Patroclus that is older and angrier and with a bigger chip on his shoulder, and how that would influence their relationship and their attraction until his anger thawed a little.
As for Achilles, I always love leaning into his strangeness and I wanted to do that even harder in this AU. He's just a weird little fish boy who doesn't know how the world really works because he's been so sheltered from it, who spends way too much time with his momma and his aunties and can't quite grasp how humans interact with each other, who desperately wants a connection but doesn't really know how to go about it, who tries SO hard to make his crush like him but fails spectacularly at it all the time (I like seeing them both suffer ahaha). Also imagine being an omega and having to juggle a heat in the middle of all those existing struggles, like he’s at his limit!!
26. Share your favourite detail
Listen..... not to toot my own horn.... But Achilles having a pussy and Patroclus being able to pop a knot in said pussy is simply elite...... it's the peak of literature, there I said it 😔

TSOA - Tying Up Lose Ends - Part 3
Previous
Achilles hid in the small area he always hid in. The spot he always lied in and never left. Where he felt his souls wither and rot.
It was the coldest, darkest area he could find in the Elysium Fields.
In the beginning, the others tried to bring comfort to him, but as the years went by, they realized it was a lost cause. Achilles was nothing without his Patroclus. Not even in the Afterlife.
Achilles had kept track of how long it’s been through scratches on the stone. But, over time, it’s been harder and harder to keep track. And he didn’t see the point in trying anymore. There was no point. Nothing mattered. It didn’t matter how many days it was. Patroclus still wasn’t there.
He’s sure it’s been years. At least 3 decades..
He lies onto the cold floor, his soul limp and useless.
He hears cheering and welcoming in the distance.
Someone new? A new hero? It’s rather rare for someone to come in.. and.. seeing as how long it’s been, it could be someone that he knew from the war. The likelihood was rather high.
But he didn’t care. He didn’t bother moving as he felt his body still press against the cold floor.
.
.
.
“And you’re sure he’s over here?” Pyrrhus asked.
“Yes..” said one man. Pyrrhus didn’t know who, but he didn’t care. He was probably in no greater than himself. “But.. it’s really not worth it. He just kinda.. lays in the same area. Never moving or talking.”
Pyrrhus scoffed. “I’m his son. I’m sure he’ll be perfectly happy to see me.”
The men looked at each other nervously, but didn’t try to stop him.
Pyrrhus followed the instructions and eventually found a crumbled, disheveled soul of a man.
“Are you Achilles?”
The soul lifts his head. His eyes are dull, like an eternal cloudy evening. He didn’t glow with pride, like the souls of the other men Pyrrhus saw. He was rather pathetic.
“Surely you can’t be Achilles..” he said with disgust.
“Who’re you..?” The man asked, barely moving to even look at Pyrrhus.
“I’m Neoptolemus. Pyrrhus. Your son. Surely you can’t be my father.. you’re so.. pathetic..”
The soul, once dull and sad, now glowing with a fiery rage, his eyes now like thunder. “Neoptolemus..” he hissed.
“That rage.. yes, you are surely my father.”
Achilles stood up. He hasn’t gotten up in 3 decades. He felt like he was being born again, like a phoenix.
“You..” he said, his voice like a snarl.
“That look in your eyes.. I know you did not want me, but surely that’s not why you are filled with such rage.” Pyrrhus kept himself distinguished, hiding the nervousness he felt from his father’s glare. “Was it the offerings? I gave you plenty. I even gave you a human sacrifice.”
“You did what?!”
“What angers you so much?!”
Achilles flinched, remembering that day.. the day of the ‘wedding’.. the blood.. her face..
“I can’t believe you.. you are not my son..” Achilles was still slumped as he stood, but his face and posture made him look like a lion on the prowl.
“What? Of course I am. Because of me, you’re now officially a legendary warrior.”
“You were not the one to save my legend! The one who kept my honor was Patroclus!”
“Patro-.. you mean that servant boy?! Surely you jest!”
“I do not! Patroclus was my love! My best friend! My philtatos! And you.. you’re the reason he’s not here.” He clenched his fists in rage. “You will never be my son.”
Pyrrhus was frozen. He had expended a shower of gratitude and congratulations from his father for having carrying the torch of his legacy. He did not expect.. this.
“You..” Achilles said, hissing through his teeth. “Are the embodiment of everything I hate about myself.”
The atmosphere was still and heavy.
“Now leave..”
Pyrrhus couldn’t move. Achilles punched him in the face, causing him to fall to the cold, dark ground. “I said leave!”
Achilles watched as Neoptolemus, the boy who had Achilles’ own blood run through his veins, scurry off, once again leaving Achilles alone.

what was your process for designing the soa patrochilles?
To be honest, not much. I simply used what the fandom had determined, If anything the fanartists and ficwriters did part of the work and I didn't have to think too much about the designs. We know Achilles is blonde, tanned and has green eyes and Patroclus has dark hair and dark eyes. I kept these book parts.
Perhaps Peleus’ blond-haired son would be equal to this, I thought. (Pag 11)
He hesitated another moment, his green eyes searching mine. Then, slowly, he nodded. (Pag 240)
Only my eyes felt like my own, larger and darker than his. (Pag 241)
Last, the helmet to cover my dark hair. (Pag 241)
In fics, Patroclus is often described as having freckles (I don't remember TSOA sayind Patroclus has freckles, so I assume it's a popular headcanon), which is why I drew him like that. I didn't draw Achilles with freckles because TSOA has a passage that gave me the impression he doesn't have
His skin was the color of just-pressed olive oil, and smooth as polished wood, without the scabs and blemishes that covered the rest of us. (Pag 25)
Patroclus' eyes being big is also mentioned a lot in the fics, so I kept it. The Achilles 1 and Patroclus 2 hair in the poll are the typical hair in the fandom fanarts (the poll is still ongoing, but I'll use those who are winning as a design example). And my TSOA Patroclus is Black because that's also mentioned in the fics, which made me think it must be a fandom consensus as well. When I read the book, I thought he was simply tanned like the other characters, since his skin wasn't mentioned. But precisely because the book doesn't say anything about this aspect, it can probably be considered an open case.
The parts of my designs that don't coincide with the fandom are in my Achilles, since my Patroclus is very similar to what the fandom usually draws. TSOA Achilles is usually drawn pale, but I made him quite tan because the book emphasizes how light his blonde hair looks against his tanned back.
His hair is long, and tied back with leather; it burns against the dark, bare skin of his back. (Pag 3)
He also doesn't have a small nose, as usual. This happened because he was repeatedly described as beautiful and I think the type of nose I drew is cute, so yeah. I drew Myth Achilles AFTER I drew TSOA Achilles and I didn't want to make them look alike, which is just why my Myth Achilles doesn't have a bigger nose. I gave this to Myth Patroclus instead.
Like, the difference between the noses of the two designs is really visible:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Myth Achilles' hair is also longer and more voluminous, as I took inspiration from Achilles' comparisons with a lion in The Iliad. TSOA Achilles DEFINITELY doesn't give off the vibe of a lion, so I didn't do the same and his hair is shoulder length, as is common in the fandom's fanart. The eyes are also different, I think Myth Achilles has more feline eyes (because of the lion thing), while TSOA Achilles doesn't. TSOA Achilles' eyes are also lighter to differentiate the two designs.
And comparing my Myth Patroclus and my TSOA Patroclus doesn't make much sense, because they're surprisingly not similar at all. The shape of the eyes, the color of the eyes, the texture of the hair, the features of the face, nothing is alike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, this is a teenage Patroclus vs. an adult Patroclus, but I think it's still possible to see that they're not exactly the same. This is because Achilles in both mythology and TSOA has a much more defined appearance than Patroclus in both cases. Hence, Patroclus allows for greater creative freedom.

Old books And Ye olde Camp Jupiter
NOTE!! The actual stuff about PJO is about 5 paragraphs in; so if you want to slip my bad rambling about two very old epics, I have it headed)
I’ve been reading the Iliad (just finished it, still try to spell it with two L’s 😎) and I’m working on the first books of the Odyssey (with Telemachus doing his thing) and I’ll say; first it was an actual joy, a riot, a rollercoaster, to read the Iliad. There has been very few books where I’ve laughed as much in character dialogue interactions (that sounds so funky but I genuinely did giggle about it) and it was just so silly goofy and fun, and I have it annotated so I can start talking about certain things
And I’ve just started the Odyssey; which it certainly does feel like a sequel (that sounds mean, but it feels the same way that reading daughter of the moon goddess and then heart of the sun warrior; amazing books by the way, go pick them up)
And it’s really fun to consume some version of the original stories and Epics and comparing it to media created with it (I say that like I’ll talk about more than just PJO and the literary choices Rick made on how to interpret and use the gods and stuff. I still am getting around to reading TSOA but it scares me man)
But, I really don’t know what I’m trying to get at
Just that the books are fun and it is generally super fun and interesting to read and even though the first few books of the Odyssey are feeling a bit like a Jason or Piper chapter; I’m pushing through to read Odysseus and his journey; and so I can eventually get to the Aeneid and annoy my friends even more with fun things about Rome and giggle in my classes;
Where the Pjo starts)
Along with that! I’d want to talk more about pre-modern CHB and CJ; seeing as my history class is going through the slog that is colonial history currently and I need someway to stimulate my brain other than writing facts about Mainz Gladius while people are talking about the Salem Witch Trials (my class is feral and gross and they have a big lack of nuance and maturity to think and process the events without being absolute idiots- that sounds mean but they’re annoying and I need to vent)
But I’d like to say there are things we know basically about sides that Greeks and Romans sided on; and because I apparently allergic to discussing Greek demigods at the moment, I’m listing Rome :3
We know that in PJO Roman demigods and the Roman side tends to want to side with rising empires almost inherently; or just rising… things. *cough, cough, the Confederacy, cough, cough*. But aside from that; we can base the ideas that,
1) we can probably confirm that there was a drop in Greco-Roman demigod participation in wars out of the Americas after it (the pantheon and the majority of the demigod groups) moved; though we can probably confirm until after North America became a Economic powerhouse that if following Riordanverse canon; that the Gods moved to New York (if we want to push it, they probably were in Massachusetts in the late 1600s the earliest in America; though I’d say they hadn’t moved until America started like doing good in like what post WII? I think-?)
*A note that is for my Re-imagining, I am seriously considering not moving Pantheons from their native lands; since that leaves a kind of bad taste in my mouth and it makes the Gods and Olympus almost… too accessible for demigods; in the most likely case I’ll pull the Greek Pantheon back onto Olympus in Greece (and I will probably make a point that American demigods can and usually when they need to get to Olympus on their own, can access Olympus through the Olympic mountain range in Washington; I am in Washington, and therefore biased, along with that being the OLYMPIC mountain ranges, I mean, it’s RIGHT THERE guys; how could I not capitalize.) and I might possible move CJ over to being in Italy (though I like the Idea of having CJ just being right there in the Bay Area; before reading tLO and just hearing about them, I thought they were located in Italy, and this all depends on what I do once I start storyboarding Re-imagined) anyway, back on topic,
2) that I’d assume for the most part, as we see that New Rome likes setting Camps up 1) in the west, and 2) near rivers (and we can probably infer it would be somewhat closer to the Equator, or a warmer area). That I think the most likely place that in the Colonial Americas, Romans settled could be,
(This is all using names from Colonial times of Colonies)
A) in British Honduras (Belize); along the Belize river. As we know that Romans supported the British during the revolutionary war, it follows my criteria of being in a warmer climate, and near a river; though it isn’t exactly west, though in proportion to where the early Greek settlers would be, it certainly works, but it puts them far from the revolutionary and just USA so probably not; it’s the middle choice.
B) in New Spain (specifically the portion of California); along the Sacramento River. As Spain was a rising empire at some moment, it is along a river, warm climate, and certainly west. The fact that the Romans would have to be in American territory to still fight in the civil war; so this would be one of my more outlandish concepts.
C) in North Carolina (or just Carolina depending on the time) along the Cape Fear river. This puts them along a river, warm climate, not west but it would be in the direct opposite (as I’d put Greek demigods hiding out amongst the northern colonies or the middle colonies even) and it puts them both in a heavily loyalist (or a colony that supported being part of the British empire) colony; where it would be fitting for them to fight on the side of the Brits, AND a colony that would be in the Confederacy; meaning that they would be in prime position for both wars; I am quite proud of this, and if I needed to put a direct town as example for an area for Romans; I’d say Fayetteville, I’d put the legions settlement across from Fayetteville- in that strip of land between the main Cape Fear river and the river breaking off called south river I think. I am very proud of this one
But yeah! This post originally was going to be about the Iliad and the Odyssey; but I got side-tracked so there are some of my Colonial New Rome ideas, uh, I hope people see the sort of effort I put in for figuring out geological locations for ideas of Camp Jupiter; I might make a post of just a timeline for where Camp has been located through the years- it’s a fun little thought experiment, id also say pre- really big colonialism of the Americas, that the Romans temporarily were first with Spain (I didn’t chose Portugal despite the fact that during that time they had the whole seafaring empire thing, but the Greeks would totally be supporting them) then the Romans go with the British Empire, briefly go down to the confederacy, then stick with America.

HIIIII!! I know I haven’t made playlists in a hot second, school is killing me and I’ve been sick every other week 😭
But, I finally sat down and analyzed Pyrrhus’s character enough to formulate a playlist. With him, I really wanted to dive more into his abandonment/daddy issues side rather than just his anger issues. I think that a lot of who he is now and all that he’s done wrong stems from Achilles and his own faults. Pyrrhus is a reflection of Achilles without Patroclus- he’s all that Achilles could’ve been, and Achilles is all that Pyrrhus might be if he finds someone to guide him. Pyrrhus didn’t have that guide, because although Thetis loved him, he wasn’t loved like a human, he was loved like a weapon. He was turned into something bad, and I truly do think that he can become better, that’s partly why I enjoyed your Pyrrhus x reader fic!
Here’s the link!
HIiiii!
Same here, I have been sick nonstop this year. I am so happy you enjoyed the fics! Thank you so much for the taking the time to make one for Pyrrhus especially since I know you are super busy and i hope you feel better soon. <3<3
And yeah you are spot on, Pyrrhus is like 99% Daddy Issues. I really liked how TSOA handled Pyrrhus and I kinda took it and ran with it. I do think that if Achilles had taken Pyrrhus back and raised his sons together, things could had turned out differently alas we will never fully know.
Pyrrhus would never admit it, he was a human and while he could be capable of redemption; it would have to something Pyrrhus needs accept and to do it for himself. Maybe someday. Eternity is a long, long time.

Ranking All The Greco-Roman Retellings I’ve Read! For Fun! Please Don’t Kill Me For Not Putting TSOA At #1!!! With Little To No Explanation.
1.) A Thousand Ships - Natalie Haynes
This is literally one of my fav books ever all time. The fact that we get retellings from so many of the women’s perspectives in one book, and not just the captive women, but the goddesses, AND EVEN THE MUSE TOO? Superb. I’m obsessed. I’ve read it three times over, which says a lot because I’ve only ever chosen to reread one other book. My fav chapters are the Calliope chapters, the Thetis chapter (so upset there was only one), the Cassandra chapters, and the Hekabe chapters!
2.) Stone Blind - Natalie Haynes & Silence Of The Girls - Pat Barker
I’m rereading Silence Of The Girls as I type this actually. It’s couldn’t choose between the two.. they were both so incredible. Similar to A Thousand Ships, Stone Blind takes on MANY different perspectives, including Medusa ofc. My fav was the Unnamed Neried chapter, that and the Panopeia chapters. And Silence Of The Girls.. oh my gods it such a guy wrenching retelling from Briseis’s perspective, and what day to day life must’ve been like on the camp. Also? Actually Accurate Patrochilles, finally.
3.) Wake, Siren - Nina MacLaughlin
First off, Roman Mythos retelling? Already in love. It’s just.. so gut wrenching. Every chapter makes you wanna scream. In the best way possible. I just,, I can’t put it into words how this books made me feel. The Thetis chapter hit me the hardest, obvi. But the Arachne chapter? Oh my gods I wanted to cry.
4.) Circe - Madeleine Miller
It was good. It was actually quite good, very good, even. But where it wasn’t good, it was.. questionable. Can we as a society stop trying to constantly villainize all the deities? Like, and before you say “biased perspective!!! Unreliable narrator!!” Which, yes, I love narrators that have a thing against the deities and emphasize the worst of what they’ve done, but there are certain parts in there where I’m like.. hello? Specifically when Hermes was saying that the Gods want mortals to be miserable bc a miserable mortal will give you more offerings then a happy one,,,, which like???? Hello??? When was that EVER the case ever?? I liked the ending.
5.) The Song Of Achilles - Madeleine Miller
Yeah I have a vendetta against this book. If you wanna read it, go for it, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, read the Iliad first. And maybe Silence of The Girls first too. Were Patroclus and Achilles in love? And probably kissing it sloppy style? Yeah. BUT WE CAN’T ERASE THE FACT THAT THEY WERE SLEEPING WITH WAR CAPTIVE WOMEN. And also, to not only ignore that, but then make it seem like they were treating Briseis well???? When she was literally A WAR CAPTIVE??? Also, I will never, EVER, forgive this book for demonizing Thetis. They made her seem like some homophobic mom as if she didn’t do EVERYTHING FOR HER SON. Idk. I also hate that this book bought on a whole new generation of people who think Patroclus was Achilles gay little twink boy. Like.. are we forgetting they were literally out committing war crimes probably.
Anyways that’s my list rn!!!! I wanna read Jennifer Saint’s books next.

10 books to know you better, tagged by @tharkuun , thank you!!! <3
So I tried to pick not just faves, but actually some that feel like they'd tell you shit about me which.. yikes. Anyway. In no particular order and with many tears over having been made to choose:
Terry Pratchett - Mort It's kind of painful having to choose one (1) Pratchett book but Mort was the first one that really grabbed me, and I'm also just. Incredibly fond of personifications (in the loosest sense) of Death, so this one it is.
Richard Siken - Crush Yeah yeah, every gay tumblr user, but Siken's control over language is simply insane to me and his poetry makes me want to skip town in the middle of the night, develop some fancy drug addiction, and write until all the words are gone from my brain.
Virginia Woolf - Orlando I'm a classics bitch at heart and I love reading classics and all, but Orlando just. Idk. Did something to me, hard to explain in two sentences, but I think it actually makes up like, 10% of my soul so. yeah
C. S. Pacat - Captive Prince I'm counting a series as one sue me. I do love these books for themselves but I've also read them at a time where they just.. hit the right spot in terms of influence on my writing, I guess? You can definitely see it in a lotttt of my stuff if you know what to look for - not so much explicitly, but in the worldbuilding and the abstract stylistics it's absolutely there.
Madeline Miller - Circe * Insert Jo March gif * I just think that women. I also just think that Madeline Miller's writing and yeah, tsoa is great and all, but in my humble opinion Circe is better.
Jane Austen - Persuasion I love all of Austen's work but I think Persuasion is like, at least 50% responsible for me going absolutely feral over the breaking up & making up trope, as well as my pickiness over it (make them work for the reconciliation I want them and myself to suffer), so. I just love this book. So much.
Markus Zusak - The Book Thief I'm generally a fan of historical fiction but I don't think anything has ever touched me as much as this one. See personifications of Death... uh yeah. 100/10 can recommend.
Albert Camus - The Rebel Okay yeah it feels pretentious as all fuck to put like, non-fiction that isn't even poetry on here but then I'm a non-fiction bitch so what can you do. I love Camus, and I read The Rebel at a really formative time of my life and it's like, 75% responsible for me starting to study philosophy. Which, I mean, it didn't really work out but that's really less about philosophy and more about the people who usually study it so. Anyway. I think a massive amount of how I view both life and activism is greatly influenced by Camus and The Rebel specifically so yeah I'm that kind of pretentious bitch <3
Maggie Stiefvater - The Raven Cycle I just think that found family and platonic love <3 Also Stief's prose!!!
Ocean Vuong - Night Sky with Exit Wounds Only read this recently but I'm still reeling from it; best poetry I've read since Crush, and I read a lot of poetry. It just scraped my soul out of my chest with a blunt knife and threw it to the wolves to be chewed on before slamming it back into my body or something. Jesus christ.
I have no idea who's done this already but no-pressure tag: @emryses @schweetheart @ghostboyjules @softest-punk @clotpole @coffee-writes @atlantablack-chaotic @wynnefic and anyone else who'd like to, just say I tagged you! <3

Fic Writer Self Rec
Fic authors self-rec! ✨ When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers ❤️
Oooh, a chance to ramble about my fics, I see, well let's do this! Thank you, @sliebman10!
Let's tag... @mikaharuka , @alpaca-clouds , @thememoryofthatday , @sapphosewrites , @axolotlsupremacyowo , @0nelittlebirdtoldme , @kayedium-writes and @tsunderewatermelon !
Ok, ok, so... as usual, I'm going to be jumping around, because you guys know how my attention span can be xD
1. Life is a Rollercoaster; or Tao Xu's Fight Against the Big Butterfly of Doom (Heartstopper | 11.1k | Fluff, Humor, Time Travel)
Tao got the chance to go back in time and undo his worst mistake. Tao prevented Charlie from being outed or bullied. Tao changed things enough that, the second time around, Charlie didn't get assigned the seat next to Nick Nelson in form.
…Fuck.
Or: the Butterfly Effect sucks, and if Tao has to take desperate measures to ensure his friend's happiness, he will. He draws the line at Iron Man 2 though, someone has to keep some standards around here.
I binged the show and immediately got the urge to write something for it, but I didn't expect it to blow up as it did! I had fun with this one, and the readers were super nice and encouraging, plus sharing this one is what led me to eventually meet @mikaharuka as we rambled over our fics, so for that alone it's always going to have a special significance for me 😁
2. Neither Grief Nor Glory (TSOA/Hades | 7.6k | Angst, Smut)
Dying had been a relief, but death is turning into its own kind of torment.
Dying was just the beginning. Achilles' journey back to Patroclus is a long and twisted one. Along the way he'll have to confront his unaddressed grief, face his many regrets and learn to truly become a man worthy of Patroclus' unconditional love.
But like all journeys, eventually he'll reach his safe harbor.
My first yuletide! This one took months and a couple of minor breakdowns, but the end result is something I am very proud of, both in terms of the prose and the worldbuilding. And my giftee left the loveliest comment ☺️
3. All That Matters (Asterix the Gaul | 2.6k | Character Study, Queerplatonic Relationships)
Asterix has always felt different, but he has Obelix, and that is usually enough. Everybody else has questions, however, and he grows tired of answering.
"He wants to shout, even if he still doesn't know what he wants to say, even if he knows that if he lets his frustration take hold of his tongue, he will regret the harm he will cause."
This was... very, very cathartic to write. I remember rewriting sections of this so often, and I am humbled by the response it had. It was a very validating experience.
4. Life is a Flower, Love is the Honey (Deep Space Nine | 9.5k | Romance and Fluff)
“I don’t think Julian would like that,” Leeta said, without pausing to think about it, but… “We could ask him,” Rom had replied. And wasn’t that an interesting idea?
(A self-indulgent, mostly Rom-centric, Julian/Leeta/Rom fic because I was re-watching ‘Bar Association’ and this happened. I have no regrets.)
The one that brought me back into writing, after several years of hiatus... and the one that gave me confidence to push on, even if I nearly backed out due to it featuring a strange rarepair. This story is always going to be special for me <3
4. When You Speak, I Hear Silence (Deep Space Nine | 1.8k | Friendship)
Terok Nor is no more, and strange new aliens are coming to the newly named Deep Space Nine. Nog doesn't expect life to change; but then he finds a friend, who gives him the greatest gift he will ever receive.
If there's a fic where I wouldn't change a single word or a moment of the writing process, it has to be this one. I'm so glad I didn't go with my initial idea, because this version with Jake&Nog just made things click for me ^_^

There's a post with a compelling discussion question of sorts that made me think of you and your ask box (https://www.tumblr.com/perhapsitisthegreatergrief/683440123857223680?source=share).
So what do you think is the expression on Patroclus' face frozen by rigor mortis? And is it a source of torture for Achilles?
Unfortunately, mobile is not letting me click that link, so i can't see the post 😭 i do want to read it though, so if you can manage, I'm curious! I'm sure that the people discussing haven't said anything i wouldn't have said (or maybe not, idk, i don't think I've ever been in a think-tank space with the tsoa fandom, i kinda just shout my thoughts to the wind or anons 😅)
Well, i definitely think it'll be a source of torture for Achilles! The thing i am also enjoying about it, is that rigor mortis is not permanent (it's actually the third step, so this whole scenario is fictional), so as the body starts to actively decay, the blood pooling at the bottom of Patroclus' body, that expression (and the rest of his body) will eventually start to "soften"/go flaccid. Give it about 3-4 days in the heat and he's a blob of a decaying body 🤣. So in a way, he'd be relieved that the horrific expression was fading, but also more heartbroken bc Patroclus' leftover humanity was getting further and further away with every day he leaves him to rot.
(look at that, using my forensics background, never thought I'd be doing that!)
As for the face itself, i think it's going to be slightly different between TSoA and The Iliad, just bc of what Pat's last thoughts were.
In TSoA, he was worried sick that by Hector killing him, Achilles would later die, via The Prophecy. So there would be an expression of both pain and immense worry, and i think that would kill Achilles inside bc i bet Patroclus makes a specific face when he's worried about Achilles, that he can see within Patroclus' dead expression. Achilles knows that the man died worried about him, and not himself, and it twists the knife worse.
For The Iliad, Patroclus goes down talking shit, after being hit miserably hard in the head and jumped and stabbed (the COWARDS!) Frankly, I like to think he was secretly really scared, but trying not to show it in a last stint of bravery. So for that, his expression is more of a "died trying, I'm sorry" look mixed with the pain of impact, where Achilles can see that this man was doing his Best, and gave it his all and just....lost. And seeing that kills him bc if hed just said yes, Patroclus wouldn't have had to die feeling this way, he just wants to tell him he did too well....
This was a fun one! I liked this!
