Punk Percy Jackson headcanons but by an actual punk instead of someone who thinks skateboarding is an aesthetic

A remaster of an old post now that i've learned even more about how to be punk!!Posted for @sillycathorrors who when i asked if he wanted me to through with this post since i was debating wether to or not said yes♡This will include my Pjo s/i named Lex de los Santos so if that'll bother you,just don't read this and reminder that punk Percy is actually canon as per his writings so this is just letting him fully participate in the subculture!!

Percy is afrosolarpunk because he's monoracial black but multietchnic(american/dominican/greek)and the son of Poseidon so he's naturally deeply caring about enviormentalism and drawn to nature based aesthetics(and people,as seen by Lex being a Demeter kid)

He got into solarpunk because of Sally.She'd take him to the beach every other weekend to clean the beach with a group of her friends(and end each trip with lunch at the beach)

Thalia was his first real experience with the subculture head on and that's a huge reason he admired her so much and was lowkey jealous of her along with a bit of gender envy

Knows how to diy things that don't even exist(i'm sorry i'll never stop making this Percy joke,it's literally so fitting)

Straightedge(Smelly Gabe trauma)

Transfem bigender and uses any pronouns + a bunch of neos and was on estrogen but for a short amount of time compared to full transitions.Autistic too and that's a huge reason he's punk,both because of facing ableism and autism giving him punk personality traits

Radicalized Nico and Hazel,who are now goth punk and pastel goth punk respectively.The three of them and Lex are known as 'The Outcast Godlings' because of the usual treatment Hades/Pluto kids get the first two were no exception to and Percy and Lex's feelings of isolation and otherness even after getting to Camp Half-Blood,all of which were thankfully resolved by the end of Hoo and the beginning of Tods(Tales of Dead Seas,my sequel to it that happens instead of T.oa)

Owns a pair of colbat blue and black demonias that were a gift from Beckendorf and they're a little tight on him now but he still wears them to remember him by

Goes on petty crime sprees for fun,letting frustration out and as dates with Lex

Rachel,Lex and him are 'The Loser Trio',a nickname they got at Goode High they reclaimed for themselves,and Rachel is canonically punk like him since she's an activist and a huge weirdo(affectionate).Rachel is also nigerian yoruba and afrosolarpunk like Perce and Lex with Lex being pastel punk and blasian too(chinese-dominican/black-greek)so they all go to protests/riots and do charity/activism together starting all the way back to freshman year and Rachel uses Mr Dare's money to give reperations and buy gifts for her besties(from punk bussinesses ofc,otherwise what's the point?)

Intentionally travels via Blackjack,foot,Argo ||,etc so as to minimize fossil fuel usage,taught Rachel how to properly dispose of her paint water,teaches younger campers how to mend and alter their clothes so they last longer and attends mosh pits and underground parties on the regular with Lex on his arm and Nico and Hazel following behind

His favorite musicians are Mcr,Teezo Touchdown,Megan Thee Stallion,The Cure,The Misfits,Alt Black Era,Direct Hit!,Meet Me @ The Altar and Korn.Some of these aren't punk but punk is black so ofc he listens to rap and also blues and Lo-Fi Beats courtesy of LFB enthutiast Hazel!!He's a guitarist himself because Lex taught him how to play as they used to take lessons as a kid and gifted him for his 19th birthday,a sea blue diy'd guitar stacked with stickers they knew he'd love

He's 6'4 by the end of Tods and his hairstyles per book were:Baby dreads(TLT),wicks(TTC),twists(TLO),afro for most of SON because he didn't remember what he styles he likes but gives himself dreads with muscle memory by the end,makes sea material based beads for them in MOA and his hair is so long by the beginning of Tods he switches to locs

Harrasses Poseidon into giving her money for Nico's chronic pain meds and mobility aids and helps Hazel rizz up girls as she's a baby transbian.They go to a Special ED school at Percy's convicement because she was supposed to be a Special ED kid but melted down so bad at overhearing Sally planning it she nevet tried to get her in properly and she regrets it to this day so she's making sure they get to live the happy childhoods she didn't.Nico is known as the outspoken activist nerd boy(affectionate)and Hazel is the pretty popular IT Girl who radicalizes her classmates with easy knowledge and encouragement and she does art that matches her beliefs

Including grafitti as she defaces public property with her familia y amigos y eventualmente su novia!!

Huge fan of energy drinks but his favorite is Cotton Candy Bang and Sally learned how to make punk themed blue food for the bit

Shark kin and catkin,specifically whale shark and calico cat(who're 99% female,tgirl Percy is her canon event).Lex is calico cat kin too for them soulmateisms and they discovered they're therians together by looking stuff up online together on Lex's bed at the dead of night and kept it a little them secret they provided tons of validation for too.Lex is also dragonkin,ghostkin and plantkin!

Percabeth is a cautionary tale to abuse survivors and intellectually disabled people about cutting off toxic normies.Lex hadn't seen much of Percy's relathionship with Annabeth until Hoo when the Eight Half-Bloods Shall Awnser The Call prophecy was spoken and it was inbetween then and Percy going missing that they learned the full details as reluctant camp co-leaders with her and realized she's abusive to her,planning to tell Percy when the time was right.The time turned out to be the MOA pre-climax when they were discussing everything that had happened over the years and Percy had a pit in his stomach as Lex and Hazel fell into their own pit afterwards too-That is to say,Tartarus.Hazel gets to unlock her true powers down there,as the Princess of The Underworld and The Unknown,and Lex does their best to care for and protect both of them while up on the surface Percy still hasn't broken up with Annabeth because too much was happening but the last straw is when she insulted Lex out of jealousy and she's so angry she dumps her on the spot and walks away despite it being the middle of a meeting.She also got the Hecate Mist storyline and no Nico relathionship retcon as symbolism/motifs for her finally making her own choices,including Lex,who she only didn't earlier because he didn't think he was allowed to

This follows up to Tales of Dead Seas,a year later Hoo sequel.The plot kickerstarter is Percy killing Zeus in a fit of rage and thus causing the greco-roman mythos world revolution Luke lied about wanting to do like the fascist he was,Luke also having been killed by Percy at the end of Pjo.The other mytho beings that're 'lesser' on the system than the gods gladly followed her and did their own things too and the mcs are Percy,Lex,Nico and Hazel in the four books of the last Percyverse series.'Elysium on Earth','Petallic','Arcane Rot' and 'Unmythologizable' are the titles in order,Sally opens up a family bussiness under 'Familia Jackson Beach Shack' in it and it chronicles Perlex's dating dynamic and Nico and Hazel as teens over the course of 4 years for that og Pjo throwback,including the chapter titles and the return of Rachel as an mc who basically lives at La Residencia Jackson at this point

Lex cracked Percy's egg via starting to date her with their own transmasc genderfluid and bigender but super femme identity making it kinda impossible for it to not happen and ofc she came out to them first and they showered her in affection,lended clothes that were too small on her she refused to not wear anyway and diy'd estrogen by their boygirlfriend.Percy's mermaidcore hair dye was spurred on by her transfeminism and Lex did it for her in an intimate moment as she nervously gripped their waist out of dysphoria she'd look ridicilous and they talked her down and kissed her face to help.Lex dyed their hair too in the final chapter of BOO,their bangs forest green as a self-love metaphor for their completed character development arc

Also Lex is a DC Comics fan and has Jason Todd as their favorite Robin and a crush on him so they told Percy she's a lot like him as a compliment and she got super offended,hand over her heart and everything,because she thinks Jason sucks(denial isn't just in The Kane Chronicles i see)

When it comes to makeup,she usually goes for glittery blue eyeliner tears,black glossy lipstick and edgy blue aquatic nails

Lex is the Team Mom to Percy's Team Dad when it comes to Nico and Hazel and befriended Nico in TTC too as his 'new older sister' by their offer when they found him crying over Bianca after meeting him briefly when Percy was showing him around and Hazel first thing they met in MOA as Hazel approached them onsight by recognizing them from Percy's talks of Lex,her not remembering anything except Sally at the start but Lex slowly came back to her when she eat a Camp Jupiter strawberry and noticed it didn't taste quite 'the same',sadness she didn't understand washing over her.Cute lil black punk found family sitch and Sally is the gilf-I mean abuela

Percy has the cocky flirty punk guy thing going on but it's a Lex exclusive

Perlex is also blue x pink,skateboarder x rollerbladder with Percy's board being ocean blue with black designs and Lex's skates are ultra girly and kiddy and huge x pint-sized.Lex has a raspy voice to match their rocker girl personality and Percy finds it so enchanting and they wear eachother's battle jackets and bought matching Ichigo Kurosaki and Orihime Inoue/Ichihime from Bleach figurines by store thrifting because they assigned their relathionship since they're just like them individually and together

Just wanted to say thank you so much for this resource - its just genuinely so helpful and I've been loving everything you've put out.

I'm currently running a D&D campaign where every species (elf, dwarf, tiefling, etc.) is turned into essentially mermaids (bottom half is river fish, crustaceans, sharks, etc.), and I have no idea what Black hairstyles would be good for prolonged (indefinite?) water exposure. I looked up some Black Olympic swimmers/water sport athletes and found short locs, buzzcuts/shaves, and some box braids (short ones). But then the thought came to me "What if these hairstyles are only meant for a few hours or a short period of time of water exposure?" etc. 1. Are there any Black hairstyles that could fit? 2. If not, should I use what Black swimmers/water sport athletes use? 3. And finally, is there ever a world where I chalk it up to "D&D Logic" and "magic" my way out of it by saying that mers of all races have evolved hair that can be any texture and still thrive/do fine in water for any amount of time in any hairstyle? Thank you so much!

If you found Olympic swimmers with the style, it definitely will work lol, they more than anyone knows what hair works. I think any afro style will work in this fantasy where they live in water. Locs are permanent, they'll be fine. Cornrows and braids are always good for water, they just have to be redone every month or so to keep them neat. (it could very well just be their natural hair in the braids as well. Doesn't always have to be extensions!) Twists might not be as easy to maintain because the water would fluff them up far faster, though if you can come up with some fantasy method of maintaining them in water, that would be cool too! Hair care under the water. Maybe using seaweed to band up the ends so they don't come apart.

I'm just personally against Black people having straight hair in water fantasies because it's like... All the styles we could possibly have that would work fine in the water with no issue, why'd you choose that 👀? Why didn't you think any of the rest were nice, you know?

⇶ But don’t bother asking for flat twists or cornrows, he will try his best, but your hair will be left in a tangled mess

⇶ Shinra loves putting on your bonnet for you too

⇶ If it’s been a long wash day, or you started late in the day just to finish late at night, he always runs to get your bonnet for you and gently slips it on your head before kissing your cheek

⇶ Really though, he’s just in love with your hair. And if your hair is as bold as he is, he’ll love it even more

It happened so fast his body registered it even before his mind.

There was a sudden breeze, the window opening, and the unmistakable sound of his feet touching the ground. It didn’t matter if there were many saying his steps didn’t produce any sound, saying he resembled more a ghost than a person. Vil heard his footsteps. Vil learnt to recognize the creak sound of Rook’s worn-out boots on the marble, the dull thud of his soles on the refined carpets of Pomefiore’s dorm. Vil learnt to perceive him, maybe in a way that was solely fabricated by his mind.

He still felt Rook was there.

“I wonder if you’re some kind of an expert in the art of cutting someone’s hair.”

Rook jumped in his room passing through the window, and Vil thought on how much he was lucky, that none of his roommates were present at the moment. If the dorm discovered the presence of a Savanaclaw student between its wall, little time would have passed for the entirety of Pomefiore to cease its existence. Not that Vil cared. After all, Rook didn’t possess a single pound of the arrogance of that dorm’s members. There was no need for his dormmates to lose their minds over Rook. 

Vil turned a little, abandoning his studies. If his roommates had plenty of time to adjust to magic, as their powers awakened at an early stage, Vil discovered them later. That world, for him, was completely new, and vast somehow. He struggled a bit in not falling behind, but luckily enough he didn’t have to sacrifice precious hours of sleep to study. He seemed, according to the professors, that magic came natural to him as it was breathing. 

However, Vil didn’t intend to slack off because of their praises, otherwise his reputation would’ve been affected in an irreparable way.

“I’m not an expert to the point I would trust myself with my own hair” Vil started saying. He moved the chair a little to look at Rook. Even thought the colors of the Savanaclaw uniform were so bright and warm in comparison to Pomefiore’s furniture, Rook seemed to him more at ease in the dorm than Pomefiore’s student directly selected by the Dark Mirror. Rook didn’t posses a single trace of fear in his eyes. There was only pure audacity, and maybe a bit of recklessness. Could there be someone without any glimpse of fear in his heart?

“But I’m quite good at cutting other’s hair for sure.”

“Merveilleux!” 

Rook got closer to him, and Vil caught him unrolling the page of a magazine hidden in his jeans’ pocket. But Vil got distracted by Rook’s scent. It was strong and stinging. Rook wasn’t really accustomed to perfumes, yet his scent seemed to mingle with the environment he immersed himself in. Rook smelled of musk, now. Of earth. Of rain. Which was bizarre, as in the campus rain wasn’t frequent. Especially in Savanaclaw. Vil came to know that the weather was controlled by a special barrier placed all around the school; rain, as snow too, was annoying to many, but the headmaster didn’t want them to forget the natural course of seasons, or something similar.

Vil would never forget that scent. Rook seemed to bathe in those perfumes who knew where, even if his dorm was known for the dry climate typical of the savanna.

Maybe it was, again, a joke of his own mind.

“How do you believe I would look with this haircut?”

Rook showed him the model’s profile printed in the page. The model’s hair was styled in a short bob, the effect simple but elegant. Near the main photo there was another one, with the haircut before the bob; the model had been completely transformed, as if he was under some kind of spell.

Vil’s eyes moved from the magazine to Rook, his mind trying to capture how the young man would’ve looked like with the new style.

How unfortunate, he caught himself thinking. Vil had, at least, the decency to not speaking his mind out loud. Rook’s hair was a disaster, burnt because of the sun and the lack of care. This didn’t mean his hair was ugly, though.  Rook’s hair was the color of the mature wheat, of the sun; it exuded warmth and strength together, even though everything appeared to the eye as a messy nest made by a distracted bird. Vil didn’t have any doubt; with the right care, Rook’s hair would’ve shined more than a diamond.

So, when Rook had proposed the new cut to him, Vil couldn’t help but thinking it.

How unfortunate. 

Thinking it, not saying it out loud. Not allowing his thoughts to gain a voice.

“I believe it would work fine” Vil found himself answering, in a cautious tone. Not to ruin Rook’s excitement, no. It seemed it was more to handle himself, actually.

“But it’s a very radical change. Are you sure?”

Rook was about to start jumping from joy. It was as if Vil’s next words missed his mind completely. Rook focused on his approval only, and Vil didn’t quite grasp why that excitement of Rook made him feel uncomfortable. He thought…no, it wasn’t a matter of importance. Vil silenced those words in his head, and came back to Rook.

“However, we will need a private space for the haircut. I can’t do it here, nor we can’t in your dorm. Only the Seven know how those beasts of your dormmates would react. I’m going to book the alchemy lab. You’re kindly requested to not being late.”

But he didn’t even have time to finish his sentences that Rook already vanished from the window, the door opening only to reveal one his roommates coming in. In the place once stood Rook, there was now a freshly picked rose. Vil collected the flower before someone could see it.

Professor Crewel was always delighted to leave the laboratory in the hand of a capable Pomefiore student, but he seemed even more pleased if Vil was the one asking for it. If that was for Vil’s reputation as a model or for his brilliant talent in alchemy, the boy couldn’t tell. He didn’t even care about it, actually. Vil only wanted to find a place to complete his task without interruptions.

Now, Rook sat diligently in front of a mirror, waiting patiently for Vil to start his work. They left the magazine’s photo on a stand so Vil could check it whenever he needed to. 

Vil felt agitated, but he knew he needed to calm himself, or Rook would’ve noticed it. Rook would notice his tension, that indecision of his, as if it was Vil the one under the scissors’ razors, and not Rook that was happy enough to sing a little tune.

“Why this decision so suddenly?” Vil asked in order to distract himself, to cover the sound of the scissors cutting the first lock. A bunch of frizzy hair fell to the ground, and Vil was almost scared to look at it. Why was he behaving in a such odd manner?

“Is it perhaps related to that scrappy idea of yours to change dorm?”

Rook talked about it to Vil before winter break. It had been a surreal conversation, ended in Rook filling the air with his laugh. 

Wouldn’t you love to have me as one of your dormmates? he asked with eyes shining fearless, eyes who belonged to someone who knew what he wanted, who knew how to obtain it even if it meant fighting an ancient magical artifact like the Dark Mirror.

No, Vil had answered, perplexed by Rook’s idea of following him in Pomefiore.

Rook then laughed, laughed against Vil’s eyes becoming more confuse, lost. For what reason you want to transfer to Pomefiore? Vil tormented himself with that question day and night long. You won’t like being too much near me.

That, he had never said it. Vil didn’t dare giving that thought a voice not even in his own dreams. Rook was the first person after a long time with whom created a sort of bond, if their talking, looking out for each other could’ve been defined like that. Rook was the first peer that didn’t stutter in his own words while talking to him, or that didn’t look at him with haughtiness, as if to protect himself from a light Vil was unable to see. 

Damn, even Pomefiore prefect seemed uneasy every time Vil talked to him. Rook had never had any problems with him.

But they knew each other so little-Vil didn’t know every thing about Rook, and Rook didn’t know every thing about Vil- and Vil thought, subconsciously, that it was supposed to be like that, to stay like that. That if Rook would dare to get too much closer to Vil, he would’ve discovered Vil’s light was actually an enormous expanse of darkness. Vil felt uncomfortable because Rook’s unpredictability made him uncomfortable. In a world where he managed to contain himself and his emotions, Rook made him derail from his tracks without leaving Vil the time to collect himself again. 

“That is not the only reason, I must admit it” that was Rook’s answer. The young man lowered his head without protesting when Vil pushed it abruptly.

“I believe I need a change of style. To hunt better, to enjoy the landscape during my walks, to change dorm. For myself.”

“For yourself” Vil echoed, perplexed. He doubted Rook was doing it solely for himself, but decided to not stress it.

“I honestly fail to imagine how my prefect would react” Vil kept going, in that plan of his to make Rook desist on his transfer. The headmaster, despite the initial shock, gave his approval, and Savanaclaw seemed ready to launch a party anytime soon after the news. Vil was left alone in that battle of persuading Rook to simply give up. To let Rook know that Vil wasn’t very enthusiastic about his transfer.

However, Rook was able to read Vil’s heart more than Vil was.

“These are not problems that concern me” Rook commented with eyes closed as Vil was fixing his bangs. They would turn out shorter than they were in the magazine, but time would’ve helped in letting them grow at the wanted length.

“They’re gonna hate you a lot” Vil kept saying.

You’re gonna hate me a lot, were the words stuck in his throat.

“I’ll survive” Rook laughed. For a brief moment, Vil felt that the sound of the scissors stopped burdening his heart.

-third year

A lot of time had passed since the day Vil fixed Rook’s hair. His overblot, then S.T.Y.X., and then again the Malleus’s thing got in between their ritual, and Vil felt the desperate need to resume that. Vil cancelled the club’s activities -it was a Friday, and the weather was nice enough to organize a little trip to the beach- and then called Rook in his own room to have him all for himself. 

Rook now sat in front of his desk mirror, with Vil checking for the haircut to turn out correctly.

From the balcony they came sounds of birds chipping, and the soft warmth of summer approaching.

“If we continue like that, you won’t be able to see a thing” Vil said. Rook kept himself still under Vil’s expert movements in the bangs fixing. They were now so long they  passed the line of Rook’s eyebrows.

Rook cared about his hair.

Rook cared in particular about that cut, but in the last months they let theirselves go a bit too much, and that was now the time to react.

When Vil finished his work, they stared at each other from the mirror. 

He reminisced the first time he saw Rook’s face becoming so light because of the new haircut. It had been a strange feeling. TRANS MALE PASSING PROTIPS

Targeted specifically at trans men who have not begun medical transition, but for anyone. Of course, this is just what works for me and everyone is different.

Shorts that fall mid thigh and are baggy can work really well to make a more masculine figure. This is a trendy style with cis men, and if they are looser on your thighs you can look more rectangular. Basketball shorts are always fine, but for bigger people can end up sticking to your thighs and making you look like a masc lesbian. Looking like a masc lesbian is so so common guys this is what we are trying to avoid. See here for reference

2. WALK WITH YOUR SHOULDERS. Walk like your shoulders are the widest part of your body. Move them kinda forward and backward. Watch a video of a man walking next to a woman for context on what I mean. Women walk with their hips, and it makes all the difference for you in someone's head. Practice in the mirror before doing it so you don't look like a fool.

3. Hair!!!! I know you guys don't want to let go of the 2020 fluffy boi haircut and that is ok. If you don't want a skin fade short haircut, there are other options. Also, if you belong to a subculture, like punk/emo/whatever else there is, look at male styles as it can be very different than what is normally accepted ( for example, men have long hair in metal subculture, you can style it like them). In general, hair is very meticulous, as for some people too short is masc lesbian and too long is woman.

This kind of hair can do wonders. For men of color/curly hair people, if you are not out locs are a very good option as they are typically read as masculine but are gender neutral. Afros, braids, even skin fades with a lot of hair at the top can read feminine. Another style option could be short cornrows that end at the neck, twists, or a fade with less hair at the top like this.

I am not black, so I cannot speak for how this would be read in a black community, but this is how, from my experience, I would view the hairstyles. Sorry if this is not appropriate. Also, I am not here to tell you not to dye your hair. It can work if you style it with masculine clothes and are dressed in a specific style like emo or scene or something. Do what you will with that.

4. If there is ANY peach fuzz on your face, make the most of it. I know I have high testosterone levels naturally, so I grow facial hair a little, but if there is enough to dye it, dye it. If there is like barely any, if its not visible in the mirror if you're really looking (not INSPECTING), it's probably not worth it, and that is fine. use your judgement, and if it is not enough, just shave it. It's better to look clean shaven than desperate for face hair. Eyebrows, mustache hair, sideburns can all be darkened with eyeshadow, brow brushes, and just for men beard dye.

5. LAYERS. I know you guys have seen this one before. Flannels, button ups over black t-shirts, zip up hoodies. It might get a little hot, but it covers your sweat stains anyways. I promise guys it helps so much with shoulders, hips, boobs, it makes you look more masculine. Don't get that ugly ass red and black checkered one though. Think if you would see a masc lesbian wearing it and use your best judgement. I heart layers.

6. Pants. Woah. Pants. I HATE pants I know you fat trans men get me. Old navy women's jeans...and you guys won't like this one...are actually pretty good. SPECIFICALLY the sky high wide leg ones. Get those a size up and cuff them, wear them low on your waist, perfect. Other than that, jeans are shit. I don't really waste my time with men's pants anymore because of my hips but cargos are great, baggy sweats with the band at the bottom are great, PJ pants good, dress pants are a struggle but I've heard dickies work well for people with a smaller body. Not sure though. My tactic is I go to a thrift store for hours and try on all their pants, then find similar ones online or take pictures of the brand for the ones I like and find more.

7. Accessories and jewelry. Iffy. Anything you could describe as dainty, if it's not a family thing or important to you, probably not. Friendship bracelets are good, pendants are good, earrings depends on where you are and what you are wearing. Studs in men are common where I am, so I wear them. Observe the cis men at your disposal. Accessories, bags don't really matter unless they're like the strawberry hot topic mini bags. Don't get those at all those are fugly. Mini bags are not great in general, just better to get something else. Watches are heavily loved here they look very male and also you have the time always even a cheap watch is fine just not a woman's watch. It has to be a men's watch. You can tell when it is a woman's watch don't get those. Nail polish is fine no one cares, it's more popular now with boys. Especially if you're a little girly pop already. Of course that also depends on your environment.

8. Stance. Sitting with your ankle on your knee is comfortable and way more masculine than crossing your legs. Confidence. Fake it until you make it because cis men are so arrogant guys. This is what I mean btw

9. Don't be afraid of being feminine. Don't give up being yourself in order to be masculine. Your happiness matters the most. Love you bye, I'll update this if I think of anything else.

"No, no, no! It's all wrong! Why must it be like this now!?" You groan, attempting to brush out knots in your hair.

You're getting ready, or attempting to get ready, for a date with Thoma.

Everything is going so well, your outfit is perfect, nicely done... However, your hair decides to misbehave at the last moment. It will not stay in place no matter what you do. When you brush and style the hair in a beautiful hairstyle, there is always a strand sticking out or laying in the wrong direction.

You put the brush away with a growl and begin untangling yet another failed hairstyle. You can't possibly leave like this! Not on a first date!

You get up and start walking around, trying to come up with a solution to this situation when you hear Thoma's cheerful voice calling you from behind the door. You immediately grab it to prevent him from entering. He can't look at you like this!

"H-Huh? Is something wrong, Y/N? Is your door stuck?" He inquires, perplexed.

"No! That is not the case... Just… I'm not quite ready yet. I have a little problem here," you respond honestly.

My Natural Hair Growth Journey

Let’s Embrace our Natural Self!

Before I start, I would like to get this clear. I don’t have a problem with weaves, wigs, ponytails, etc. I say this, at the front door because when I decided to announce that I am trying to go natural; I got looks like I was a traitor. As of today, I wear my natural hair under my wigs because I am transitioning my hair from relaxers, tight hairstyles that pulled on my edges and bad hair gel that essentially dried out my hair. This is the reason for my natural hair growth journey.

My natural hair growth journey beginning

It was December 2015, and I was just about to finish college when I began cruising YouTube at home. I was bored and curious as to what was going on, then I came across some You-tubers sharing their experiences about maintaining their natural hair.

They talked about the products they tried and liked and the ones they didn’t like. I was hooked!  I spent hours watching, learning and writing down tips and products. You would have thought I was back in college. I was back on my grind.

It is funny how life can bring you into a full circle

A few years ago, 3 of my older cousins, who all live in different states, were visiting for a family reunion. I noticed that they had cut their hair down to a low Afro. At that time I was still relaxing my hair, wearing wigs and sometimes ponytails.

But I was curious. Was this a new revolution that I was ignorant about? Of course, I knew that the 60s brought back rocking the Afros, then in the 80s and early 90s the braids, especially the “Goddess braids” or for some of us the “Janet Jackson box braids”. Now the 2000″s “s brought back the natural hair look.

The crazy thing about it was that I found myself defending weaves, wigs, and ponytails. One of my cousins asked me why I wouldn’t just go natural. I heard comments like “You guys are just making the wig stores richer by trying to look like Caucasian women with that long flowing hair”. What? Yes, I was being attacked at the family picnic.

I said, “First, I am not trying to be like anyone but myself. Secondly, I love the way I look with long hair”.  I told my cousin that I have a big apple-shaped head, therefore, I couldn’t rock the short hairstyles. They don’t fit my face. The truth about it was that I was envious of my cousins’  abilities to wear their hair that short and still look good. They have the faces and heads for that style.

As I look around these days, I see all lengths of Afros, twist outs and braids. While doing my research, I realized this may not be just a trend or phase, this could be the beginning of our sisters learning to love and accept their natural hair.

My history growing up was if your hair was long and silky-like, you had “good hair”. Being black, I grew up believing that because it was one of the descriptions people would use to describe someone with silky or wavy hair.

Now that I am in my forties, which means I grew up in the 70s and 80s, this was still going strong from my heritage, which started this nonsense. I can’t lie, I still find myself saying, “She or he has good hair”. I am not only transitioning my hair, but I’m also transitioning my mind about African-American hair. Furthermore, I have work to do, for real!

Our hair is like no other on this planet. Going way back to our West African ancestors, we have always shown our artistic abilities when it came to our hair because it is so different. Our hair grows in a coiled curl pattern, coarser in texture, which makes our hair more delicate to manipulate than other races. Alright anon, buckle up, bc I went all out researching this (I mean, browsing google images pretending not to drool over men’s undercuts and top knots….anywayyy).

Hunter’s hair is thick, wavy, and mostly shoulder length. It lends itself to a variety of hairstyles and ways of styling. I kept that in mind while branching out a little bit if he ever kept it shorter or a bit longer. Also, a lot of these have short beards as well because you cannot tell me that man can’t pull off a well groomed beard.

1. All-Natural

Honestly this man looks amazing just with his tousled locks swooping over his forehead, bandana or no bandana. It takes really nice hair to have just a simple, layered, shoulder length cut look good, and boy does Hunter have that.

2. Bun/Top Knot

Any kind of messy bun, top knot, pulled back arrangement for this man’s locks is going to look good. Whether he spent some time combing them out and twisting them just right, or hurriedly pulled everything back with a hair band Omega keeps on her wrist for him just so he can get it out of his way, Hunter will look like he was born to pull off that look.

Interestingly as well, Māori hairstyles incorporated many different variations on what we call buns and top knots. I can’t show the images for copyright reasons, but google “men’s Māori hairstyles.” There are some beautiful engravings and drawings from the 1800s of them and their elaborate facial tattoos if you search.

3. Fade + Quiff

If Hunter ever decided to go a little shorter and keep up with a more aggressive styling regime, that jawline and thick hair are perfectly suited for some epic faded sides and pulled back locks on top. I can guarantee you he would chisel some nice but subtle patterns into the sides as well. Again, this would be balanced perfectly with an equally well-kept beard.

4. Swept-back

Similar to the all natural (and closest to his current style), this look keeps the layers shorter on top and lets the length sweep back with some hair gel. It could even extend into a mullet—yes, I hate to admit he can pull even that off as well 😅.

5. Braids, Braids, and More Braids

And finally, we have of course, the braids. Any braided hairstyle really, braided sides with the top smooth, one long braid on the top with small ones on the sides, a fishtail braid pulling everything loosely back, braids leading to a top knot or bun…this man would look good in them all.

Hi so this is gonna be pretty long and I’m looking for advice. I’m a black girl who’s 18 years old with 4 type hair. Long story short I’ve been through all the phases with trying love and embrace my hair. Back in middle school, I used to watch 3 type curly hair videos and complaining why my hair isn’t mimicking the same hair texture and nearly came to the point of hating my natural hair texture believing it was “Impossible to manage” and “too hard to grow”. My mom would constantly hide my hair in box braids or cornrows and gaslight me on how my hair isn’t made to be let out and if it is, she would always try to slick it back with gallons full of gel or do wash and go hairstyles to make it have a loose curl look. She always washed and braided my hair and never gave me the chance to do my own hair. Now that I’m older and more mature, I’ve come to terms with my hair and I’m learning to manage it on my own, now realizing 4 type hair isn’t even hard to take care of, the problem was me copying a hair texture that wasn’t mine. I’m trying to wear my hair in normal Afro hairstyles and I feel confident and get tons of compliments from other people but my mom and dad make fun of my hair and tell me I look “crazy in it”. My mom would tell me not to leave it out before my hair breaks off (cause it’s currently winter for me) but even in the summer she says the same shit. I’m so tired of box braids, I’ve worn them my whole life and I just want a break from them but my mom won’t leave me alone.

Aww I'm sorry you have to deal with that. It can be hard to build self confidence when your parents are picking at you. When I first started looking after my hair and trying things out, people straight up called me crazy. I'm not really sure how it didn't hurt my feelings because I'm very sensitive but I think it was knowing and affirming that what I'm doing to my hair is making it softer, longer and healthier so teen me would tell myself " they can think that with their dry ass hair " and eventually I started saying it to people lol my hair was juicy and moisturised

Maybe you can try twists or mini twists. Type 4 hair can hold twists for a long time and looks really cute and works well in winter. It can be an easy style to maintain and is similar enough to braids maybe your parents might leave you alone so you can continue to build more hair confidence. There're actually some really good mini twists routines on YouTube and this one woman wears twists all the time

Sometimes Black parents do not want to see things our way. They're so stuck on what they think is right it will take years for them to admit they're wrong. Sometimes all you can say, it's my hair and my problem and politely walk away, they might start to get annoyed and back off

I get money is always an issue and idk how old you are but this is why moving out for uni, even just for a year can be transformative. Not having that negativity in your ear for a year can help so much to the point the negativity doesn't stick

My hair getting a lot longer was what permanently shut people up but that's not exactly a solution

The couple had gotten up off the couch, hand in hand as they left the room. Seonghwa didn’t miss the way Hongjoong immediately kissed her as soon as they were outside in the slightly darkened hallway, clearly sneaking off for something more.

“Captain’s about to get his dick wet how much you want to bet.”

Wooyoung laughed, clapping at the sight. Wooyoung adored Hongjoong’s girlfriend, in fact he was the one that was secretly helping Hongjoong with something regarding her; though the other members didn’t know what. He and Hongjoong would often drop the subject when anyone else came around.

“Lucky him, bagging a hottie and getting laid. Man I wish it was me!”

Mingi ran his hands through his platinum blond hair. Seonghwa only scoffed,

“So what. We could all easily get laid.”

Wooyoung howled at that. Clutching his stomach as he laughed at the idea.

“Dude, just say you’re jealous of them. You know they aren’t gonna break up right? Hyung loves her a lot, more than he lets on.”

Seonghwa knew that. He knew how much Hongjoong loved his girlfriend. The couple did eventually return, Hongjoong’s neck marked with multiple hickies. He shared one more kiss with his girlfriend before she left, the leader sitting back in his original seat.

“She’ll be back, she’s going to change. She got her belly button pierced, it’s so hot. Damn I have the hottest girlfriend ever.”

Hongjoong sighed dreamily, as if he’d been struck by cupids arrow.

“I can’t wait to propose to her.”

The room fell silent, mostly on Seonghwa’s part. He was going to propose to her!? After only a year of dating? This was serious, the confirmation that Hongjoong wouldn’t ever be his. He was in love with her, in love with his girlfriend.

“You’re marrying her?” , “is that an issue Seonghwa-ssi? I love her.”

The two eldest members stared at each other, Hongjoong’s eyes dark with some unknown emotion.

“I thought my best friend would be more supportive that I found someone I want to marry and share with atiny. You can be mad at me, but don’t you dare get mad at Jaydah. She did nothing wrong besides being my girlfriend.”

The leader stood suddenly, clearly pissed off.

“You’re the idiot here you know! Can’t even realize when your own friend is in love with you!”

Hongjoong stopped, turning to look back at Seonghwa.

“I did notice. I just don’t feel the same, I’m sorry. But I’m happy with her. Can’t you at least try to be supportive?”

The leader left the room, slamming the door behind him. Seonghwa immediately broke down in tears, but he knew Hongjoong was right. He had to be supportive of them.

Coachella was right around the corner, all Seonghwa had to do was focus on healing the heartache and performing to the best of his abilities.

It was the first day of Coachella, they were on next. Everyone was buzzing with energy, especially Hongjoong who fidgeted with a black ring box in his hands.

Seonghwa had honestly gotten over it. Sure it stung a bit, but now he found himself being a bit more supportive, he’d even helped his friend pick out a cologne his girlfriend would like best. The sound of a door opening and closing came, the woman of the hour walking over a few moments later.

“Hongjoong! Damn I love the red hair cap.”

Hongjoong shoved the box in his pocket, meeting his girlfriend half way to take her hands in his. She was taller by a bit, now even more so in platform boots. Her hair was in a new style, she’d told them it was called goddess braids; a mix of lilac and pink dancing with tinsel in her hair.

“You look great! Wow, stunning. Holy shit my girlfriend is so hot.”

The couple shared a kiss, hands squeezing each others. Seonghwa smiled, the two really did make a good couple; and hopefully..she’d agree to be his wife. Hongjoong cleared his throat, looking up at the taller woman.

“So, I have a question before I go on stage. And I just want you to know…that I love you, no matter what. No matter what anyone says or what anyone thinks, Jaydah; you’re the best thing I could have ever asked for. And I really love you a lot. So I was wondering..”

The leader got down on one knee, pulling out a ring box as the music got louder. Jaydah’s hands raised to her mouth, eyes wide and full of surprise as Hongjoong opened the box.

“Will you marry me?”

The woman let out a soft laugh, then nodded fervently as she held out her hand. Neon pink and green nails shining under the black light.

“Yes! Yes I’ll marry you Hongjoong!”

Hongjoong immediately stood up, slipping the ring onto her finger as the backstage area grew Loud with congratulations and cheers. The now engaged couple sharing a kiss to celebrate their love.

Seonghwa smiled, though he was still a little jealous he could be happy for his best friend. His best friend who was marrying the woman he loved. A tap on his shoulder came, turning around on of the backup dancers held out a bouquet of roses.

“These are for you Seonghwa, also…can I take you on a date sometime?”

Seonghwa turned back to the couple, Hongjoong had an arm around his fiancé while they painted the fan for the real together. Turning back Seonghwa nodded.

“Yeah sure, a date sounds nice…hey can we make it a double? I want to celebrate my best friend getting engaged.”

The other man nodded, confirming it was okay. Seonghwa smiled as he began to walk over to the couple. Finally realizing that Hongjoong deserves to be happy and so did he, and they would be.

Octoling hair hcs

There are two big differences between Octoling and inkling hair that form the foundation for the diversity in Octoling hair

1. Octolings have prehensile tentacles so they naturally tend to tangle within each other.

2. When Octoling tentacles spend a prolonged amount of time in contact with each other they will merge into a larger tentacle, this can be seen in the Octoling idols Shiver and Marina. Octolings are born with hundreds of tiny tentacles that over time merge into around 6 tentacles by adulthood, this gives many octoling children frizzy looking hair when they are young, after 6 tentacles are formed they typically are separated enough to avoid merging, however hair that is not detangled semi-often will fuse into even fewer tentacles eventually becoming a mono-tentacle, these can appear a single long tentacle or even certain shapes like the afro that some Octolings adorn.

The merging of tentacles has historical significance as hair is seen as traditionally important to Octolings, (This is why the short/shaved hairstyles of Octolings have infested the punk scene). In the modern day, this tradition has stayed strong in the Splatlands but was less popular in the Octo Valley until recently. The drop in popularity was likely due to tentacles needing to be cut off to create new Octarians and supply the army during the war.

To use the previously mentioned idols as an example of the versatility in Octoling hair, Shiver has a very unique hairstyle having cut off the tentacles on the right side of her head and merged the remaining ones into a mono-tentacle, she likely uses a wide-toothed comb to comb the ends every morning to avoid the natural curls that the tentacles tend to form into after they begin to move. Due to having the ability to merge, repeatedly using a comb on Octoling hair does not cause the same damage it would to inkling hair. There are products that can temporarily paralyze tentacles allowing one to straighten them out however we can tell that Shiver doesn't use these due to appearance of suckers on the tentacle, suckers grow on mature and healthy tentacles that one must continuously cut off if they want to retain a smooth look.

Marina has a look that has become very popular among younger Octolings in Inkopolis after Off the Hook's rise to fame and due to it's low maintenance in contrast to the complicated maintenance that Octoling hair usually has. First the tentacles are parted, this can be difficult because the hair close to the scalp has typically been merged together for quite some time (that is why many Octolings start this hairstyle at a young age), this step is very important however because the parting will determine the number of tentacles that they grow into, from there they are either braided, twisted, or tied together they will eventually merge together. From there the Octoling will periodically have to apply an oil-based cream to prevent the tentacles from merging as the detangling process can ruin the merging of tentacles. Another aspect of the popularity of this style is due to the unique way they can develop, If your tentacles have been seperated into less than 6 parts they might split while growing, this new growth can be retwisted back into the tentacle but some people may leave it this way to create a unique look (This may be the reason for the spiky look that Shiver has). Also due to the fact that this hair is mostly left alone and allowed to grow, it encourages the growth of suckers. Finally this hair's curliness varies from person to person, due to the weight of the tentacle some people like Marina may have long and wavy tentacles that move freely while others may have hair that just grows into loops over and over with very little natural movement from the tentacles.

Small Notes.

Detangling

The process of detangling merged tentacles is long and somewhat painful, if an Octoling wants to retain styles that have multiple tentacles tied closely together they must apply the previously mentioned oils and avoid large amounts of water such as heavy rain or pools.

What about Inklings?

It is ill-advised by most hair experts to attempt Octoling hairstyles with inkling hair. Because Inkling tentacles are not prehensile it can be difficult to mimic the curly nature of Octolings, attempting to force Inkling tentacles into this may cause damage. Furthermore, some inklings may try to replicate the merging of by applying small amounts of water to tentacles or poking them with needles to cause them to loosen and release ink before wrapping them in plastic until they merge into a larger tentacle. This is possible but one can easily damage their tentacle or splat themselves if they're not careful. Even if successful your hair may not merge properly causing it to stick outwards or become extremely frizzy. If you intend to merge your tentacles it is highly advised that you get it done by a professional and to either repeatedly merge the tentacles or take the style down after some time, this is because unlike Octoling tentacles which may only split sometimes when there is less than 6 tentacles, Inkling tentacles do not naturally merge, this means that all new growth will be split no matter what when it grows in.
