Again not a dungeon meshi reader/watcher but every time I hear about that laois guy I get reminded of how my system had/has a hyperfixation on dragons so intense that we got that big fancy dragonology book and we treated it like the damn dragon Bible for like years
Now, obviously, we understand that there's different interpretations on mythical creatures, and no one interpretation on a dragon is necessarily gospel, but that multiple interpretations on the classic tale of beasts of scale and fire are completely valid and to be expected!
however if you call an Eastern dragon a coatl I'm going to come to your house and slaughter your family
#THEY'RE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT#yes they have similarities but coatls have WINGS typically and dont usually have other limbs. they're more serpentine birds#meanwhile Eastern dragons (Chinese depictions for example) don't typically have wings and are more lizard-like#like Mushu !!!!!!!! Mushu is an Eastern dragon#and then there's drakes and wyrms. which are entirely different bc they can't really fly#drakes are more like draconic horses or dogs. no wings but four limbs and a tail with a reptilian appearance#wyrms are more serpentine with no limbs and no wings. though i think some interpretations of wyrms give them like.. two forelimbs#then there's wyverns. wyverns have two legs and two wings instead of the typical eight limbs (four limbs two wings)#(i also perosnally hold true to the interpretation of wyverns with poisonous stingers for tails but that's just me cause i think its cool)#..... how much of this is just me talking abiut dragons#explodes.#oh yeah and obv there's the HTTYD interpretations which i adore! they're interesting#the designs are so fascinating and from what ive seen seem to have some science behind them#and arent just the typical western style of dragons. which nothing wrong with the western style it's a classic ofc#but it's still fun to see some variation!!#and ofc there's WOF#which holds true to Western dragons in simple anatomy but has its own variations and of course its own lore#then there's. fuck i forget the name but it's a fantasy story based in China i believe#i loved it so much it was so cool#anyways it had a dragon character named Seryu. I love Seryu. he my favorite#anyways i liked the interpretation of dragons there bc iirc it held true to ummmmm some Chinese mythology involving dragons#cause Eastern mythology of drahons is . so much diffetent than Western#Western dragons are commonly very monstrous creatures‚ usually very animalistic#they tend to embody the Christian concept of greed/gluttony hence why they're so typically monstrous/villainous#which i find interesting but i wont get into that#meanwhile. i wanna say Eastern dragon legends more revolve around the idea of a dragon as more of a godly/fae-type creature?#that's probably a poor comparison but that's how i interpreted it. agian im probahly wronf about all of this#im some weirdo rambling about dragons on the internet. dont trust me explicitly#i need to get more dragon mythology books#HELP I REACHED THE TAG LIMIT I DIDNT THINK THAT WAS POSSIBLE GOOD LORD OKAY I'LL SHUT UP NOW

My Girlfriend Rates BG3 Characters Based On Vibes
My GF has never played Baldurs Gate and has limited knowledge of DnD or videogames in general, here are her thoughts:
Lae'zel (2/10)
"She looks like a teen boy tried to make a bangable bored ape NFT, kind of gives Gorillaz character vibes."
Shadowheart (7/10)
"Makes me think of a lesbian version of that guy from How To Train Your Dragon, kinda bangable. Not that the HTTYD guy is bangable, he's not, but-"
Karlach (11/10)
"Would smash. no questions asked."
Astarion (5/10)
"An extra point because he's zesty. Kinda has a vibe like he lures children into his white van. Only popular because of the vampire fetish tbh."
Wyll (8/10)
"That's just a good-looking man. My theory for his story is that he's adventuring during a midlife crisis and he thinks taxation is theft."
Gale (7/10)
"Chiseled jawline, nice. Not into beards though. Definitely likes his nipples rubbed during sex, I just know this."
BONUS Minthara (1/10)
"Vibes are absolutely rancid. Looks like Gollum before he found the ring. I don't like her."
BONUS Halsin (8/10)
"Friendly energy. Looks like he has a huge schlong but he's kind of shy and humble about it. Not my type but I'm sure people love him. This is the bear guy????"

HTTYD List of Dragons that I’ve compiled including some of the most important, the freakiest, and generally ones I loved the most. And plenty of them that I believe Rhaegar would geek out about in a Viserys-Lego-Years-Long style.

@syndrossi I hope you enjoy the read.
I figured to start out with the main dragons we meet in the first film as well as the ones we follow the most in the series since the main characters are their riders. These are the ones that have the most personality as well since we spend so much time with them, but almost always see personality in every dragon we meet in the show. The fun thing about these dragons is that not one of them have a whole ‘monster’ vibe ‘we gotta kill it’ no, there’s a reason why they act this way, sometimes they’re hungry, they’re searching for something, it’s about survival, but overall, the majority on this list are intelligent but wild animals. Some can be trainable, some can’t be, and that’s fine.
Dragons in this universe have a type of Class. I’ve never delved fully into it but from my recent research I’ve seen:
Stoker Class - mainly fire types, although a majority of all dragons have fire-breathing these are the main direct fire ones that rely on it the most.
Boulder Class - heavy, tough scales, mainly shoot lava type fire and eat rocks.
Sharp Class - contain some sharp anatomy body-types or sharp extremities, like spikes or horns.
Strike Class - very fast, very agile, amazing accuracy.
Tidal Class - water dwellers
Tracker Class - a new class in the show, it can be given to other dragons from other classes, it’s in the name, they’re able to track almost anything from miles away.
Fear Class - stealth, sneaky, terrifying.
Mystery Class - generally where dragons are placed when there isn’t much known about them or they’re very rare. It isn’t unusual for dragons to show up in Mystery Class only to be placed in a Class they fit in better after getting to learn their abilities and traits.
Now, onto the dragons! Dragons in this universe are ‘trainable’ in the sense that with enough time and trust, a dragon can technically be bonded to any human. This does not apply to all dragons of course and not to all humans, as a human needs to be as open as the dragon to form a bond. A rider is also not limited to their dragon and vice-versa. While they don’t typically switch around, there have been moments when main characters ride other dragons momentarily or their dragons are ridden by other people (again, rarely.)
Their diet is also mainly fish-related and raw. Although it depends on the dragon, some prefer chicken or goats, even fruits. And as we know, Boulder class enjoy rocks.
Night Fury

The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. The only one we ever really meet is Toothless. He is the fastest of the other dragons, a Strike Class and his flame is typically referred to as Plasma Blasts. Quick and powerful projectiles that land heavy damage to their enemies. Night Furies also tend to dive-bomb in a fight, using speed as their weapon and they have echolocation! They have retractable teeth and amazing accuracy, Hiccup himself says that Toothless “never misses”. They also have great acute senses, in the first movie, Toothless was able to hear his rider screaming all the way across the village in a hidden cove. This also showed how loyal Night Furies are as Toothless clawed his way out of that cove to get to Hiccup (something he tried before but couldn’t achieve before their bond was formed). They’re also intelligent creatures, when Hiccup spares his life upon their first meeting and decides to let him go, Toothless could have just killed him but recognizing mercy, let him go as well.

Deadly Nadder

Nadders are very beautiful and they know this. They enjoy pruning and keeping themselves clean. Nadders are in the Tracker Class (used to belong to the Sharp Class). They have folded spikes on their tails that they can extend and shoot like projectiles at enemies. Nadders are similar to birds or chickens in their walking stance, they have a blind spot right below their jaw but be careful! They have excellent hearing. They enjoy hunting in packs. Nadders are also very loyal to their riders, putting themselves in harms way to keep them safe.
Gronkle

A Boulder Class dragon, Gronkles love to eat rocks and shoot molten lava (and lava rocks) as their main fire power. They have thick heavy scales and a tail made for offense. They’re not the fastest with their small wings and they prefer to be on the ground (thats where you find rocks!) In the show, our main Gronkle, Meatlug, was fed a particular combination of rocks that led to her molten lava coming out and forming a type of light but incredibly tough metal. (Think of it as their version of Valyrian steel.) Sociable and like packs.

Monstrous Nightmare
These can be a bit of a show off, they like to think they’re the toughest of the tough in their Stoker Class. Perhaps that’s because they can light themselves on fire! Yep, Nightmares’ scales produce this flammable gel that they can activate to light on command. Hookfang, our resident Nightmare, doesn’t get to do it as often because it would burn his rider.
But since Jon and Rhaegar don't burn it wouldn't be much of a problem, although I doubt they'd like going into battle naked. OTOH, Daemon next to a flaming Caraxes is a new-level of terrifying.
Hideous Zippelback

Our only main Mystery Class dragon, oh! And did I mention he has TWO heads? Meet Barf and Belch, one head (on the left) breathes a green awful gas while the other has a sparking-type flame that sets the gas ablaze. After a while, dragons tend to mimic their riders personalities more often than usual, so when their riders, a pair of twins called Ruffnut and Tuffnut, start bickering or fighting, it’s not long before Barf and Belch start literally butting heads with each other.
Zippelbacks are also notoriously loyal to those that help or save them. When Hiccup and Toothless save them from a rock avalanche, the dragon sticks to the pair, in debt to them until it was repaid.
I particularly love how each head has a specific function and it isn't just random or basic like fire and ice (IYKYK). They're part of a cohesive system and work together, they need each other.

all these previous dragons mentioned are easily trainable and sociable with both dragons and humans after the effort is put in.
bonus: Hiccup reading the Book of Dragons for the first time, we see a bunch of different dragons here for the first time! This is where we get to see the different types of dragons as well, and we do eventually meet all of them throughout the large franchise.
Time for more dragons! The following are dragons we get to see in the show, a few more recurring than most. The show does have a usual dragon-of-the-week format but not always. And it always depends on the situation but regardless we always add more to the dragon lore.
Whispering Death:

Boulder Class dragon that prefers to be underneath the earth than flying above it, uses its thousands of teeth to drill into the very earth.
Very lamprey-esque that still fills me with nightmares.
Have poor eyesight and a terrifying roar.
Hold grudges against dragons and humans.
Not the best fliers as they prefer to be on land.
They don't often travel in packs but they can, although it isn't brought up much.
not trainable.
Screaming Death

He’s just a lil guy.
An albino giant Whispering Death called the Screaming Death in the show. It's said that a Screaming Death only comes to be every one hundred years. This one is a recurring obstacle in season 2 for the gang of dragon riders.
The Screaming Death we meet is a thousand times more ferocious than any previous Whispering Deaths’s we’ve seen before. He’s also barely a year old.
More than that, he was taken from his mother which is the cause of most of his behavior until he reunites with her in a season finale where he had been an ongoing obstacle for the the mains.
untrainable— DON'T EVEN TRY IT
Boneknapper
What a name.
A Mystery Class dragon that, because of its weak scales, uses the bones of dead dragons to protect itself.
Very stubborn, it will go far and wide for years on end to find the perfect fit for his armor, even risking its life in the process.
Has a deafening roar that can send Vikings ten feet away from him. He's incredibly stealthy and able to sneak up on anyone.
We meet this dragon in a special short film.
trainable after some effort and offering something he wants.
The Scauldron

A Tidal Class dragon, meaning he's a water dweller.
The Scauldron shoots boiling hot water at its enemies.
Typical loners, and like most water dwellers they can't go long when stuck on land.
That’s how we meet Scauldy, a Scauldron that is stuck on land and the riders wish to rescue. He forms a bond with Ruffnut thanks to her fish-scented hair.
trainable, but rare and under the right circumstances.
Timberjack

A Sharp Class dragon that we actually don't get to meet in the main series but rather the sequel series set in the future (it's eh)
Timberjacks have sharp wings that can cut through entire forests (and enemies).
They closely resemble Monstrous Nightmares in a way.
Loyal to their riders regardless of anything, these aren't dragons to mess with.
Trainable
Usually solitary.
Extra extra: EVEN MORE dragons for Rhaegar to go crazy over.
Terrible Terror

So, in the books, Toothless was just a small common Garden dragon that got his name from the fact that his teeth just hadn't come in (and then when he got one, he lost it in a fight to an adult dragon).
When the writers began planning for the movies, they knew they wanted Hiccup to have a dragon big enough to ride, thus the size and species changed.
And so the Terrible Terror was born as an homage to the original Toothless.
Terrors are the size of a large cat or an iguana, they purr like cats and are part of the Stoker Class, so they are fire breathers.
But what they lack in size they make up for by attacking in large packs.
Terrors ended up being something of a comic relief from time to time. Although Hiccup did begin to train them to deliver messages, inventing 'Terror Mail'.
trainable
Thunderdrum

One of the few Tidal Class dragons able to breath fire although they don't use it often, their main method of attack is actually a strong concussive sound that can kill a human in close range.
They can dwell easily on either land or water, and they can expel the oxygen from their body to flaten their bodies to be able to glide across the surface and easily catch their prey.
They can be reclusive but enjoy travelling in pods.
Thunderdrums are also hard of hearing, making them the only dragons known to be immune to the Deathsong dragon.
trainable but they are stubborn and a challenge.
Changewing

This Mystery Class dragon is able to camaflouge using its chamaleon-like scales to blend into their surroundings.
Instead of fire, they shoot hot, corrosive acid that burn rocks and wood (as well as humans). They're also incredibly fast and stealthy.
One alone is a threat but can be taken down, thus why they hunt in packs. But they're large enough to defend themselves too.
Their packs also follow a typical lion pride style, as their females are the hunters.
Aggressive to humans and other dragons, they're also not opposed to eat both.
not trainable
Night Terrors

Not exactly cousins to Terrible Terrors although they do receive their name from them.
These nocturnal Stoker Class bat-like dragons opperate best as a team.
They unite in masses to form a large shape as their main defense to scare off predators, typically following their Alpha (a slightly larger sized and white scaled Night Terror.)
We meet them in the beginning of Race to the Edge, the riders claim an empty island of their own and come across these little guys. By taking away the leader, the rest scramble and run, not able to function together as a group. They get along well and name the Alpha Night Terror, Smidvarg.
Since it's their island too, they come to an agreement and the Night Terrors act as sentries or sentinels for the island.
trainable.
Armorwing
Not unlike the Boneknapper, this Mystery Class dragon uses metals to protect their scaleless bodies.
Their bodies are also somewhat magnetic, any metal coming into direct contact stays there until they can properly forge it.
Speaking of forging, when they do melt metal onto their body, their fire is unsually bright and one of the hottest seen.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were to be reclassified as a Stoker Class, even their shape is very Monstrous Nightmare-like.
Some actually have a preference for specific metals. It could range from iron, bronze, silver, or even gold.
Smothering Smokebreath

They get their name from the fact that they can't breathe fire but rather exhale extreme thick plumes of black smoke.
These guys are not inherintly aggressive at all, they actually prefer to avoid fights.
They're always in packs due to their small size, only slightly bigger than Night Terrors. Together, their joint smoke breath appears like a natural fog bank, keeping them hidden and safe from predators.
Their reputation has been quite supernatural for years, thanks to their smoke, no one has ever gotten a good look at what they look like, making them larger than life and spreading scary tales.
They're also little thieves that like shiny things, typically stealing anything metal to keep in their caves.
not trainable, they don't like to leave their home, although i wouldn't 100% rule it out.
Speed Stinger

Okay, I know, they look like velociraptors from Jurassic Park, bear with me.
For decades they were believed to be a rumor or legend.
The ultimate of the Strike Class, they don't have wings but are the fastest dragons on land that you'll ever meet. And I hope you never do.
They're scavengers and hunters, always in packs and never alone, using their poison tipped tails to paralyze any victims they claim.
Incredible aggressive and not an easily susceptible threat.
They typically get to places by running across glaciers and frozen bodies of water, but over time other packs have evolved and even developed webbing to be able to run across water.
They aren't trainable but it's not impossible, the riders once found an injured adolescent Stinger, nursed him back to health and managed to train him for months before sending him back to his pack.
This was a specific circumstances case, so I would still call them untrainable.
Deathsong

The Deathsong is one of new dragons we get to meet and name along the way.
Very beautiful on the outside, resembling a butterfly to attract prey from afar but that's not all it can do. Coming from its name, the Deathsong's most potent form of attack is its siren song.
Able to attract and disoritent humans and dragons alike.
Once prey has arrived, the Deathsong is able to shoot out an orange hot type of lava at its victims that hardens instantly like amber.
This way it keeps its victims on standby before consuming them, dragon and human alike.
Aggressive and solitary.
Not trainable as an adult, but we did see the riders train one since he was a hatchling, forming a bond that lasted even years after being in the wild.
Foreverwing

The only dragon we don't get to see in the movies or the shows but I included him since he was just so interesting.
He's one of the Titan dragons due to his colossal size and has thick foliage and trees that grow on his back.
Foreverwings sleep for a long time, typically on mountains so their backs grow larger and denser, becoming homes for all matter of creatures, dragons and animals alike, able to live in peace and harmony amongst each other.
It also spews copious amounts of lava able to take down entire villages.
More dragons:
Dramillion - this dragon is capable of mimicing fire blasts of other dragons
Snow Wraith - a cold dwelling dragon, entirely white with red eyes, solitary and impossible to find
Catastrophic Quaken - her mouth opens in a split way that makes it terrifying. also can curl into itself like an armadillo and smashing themself against enemies or large rocks
Typhoomerang - A new species of dragon that the gang encounters. Their first dragon that isn't in the Book of Dragons actually, so they get to name the species and spend time with a hatchling for a while. These Dragons leave scorch marks on the ground not unlike a typhoon sigil and tend to come back down the same way, like a boomerang.
And there are so, so, so many more.
#this took a minute. i actually was half way done but tumblr decided to have a heart attack and crashed#it left everything i had edited unsaved and i almost threw my phone across the room this morning.#anyway i'm finishing now THIS TIME ON A LAPTOP#again i mostly went over the wikia for these dragons to reawaken my knowledge about it and i only jotted down the main bits.#i dont claim to be an expert but i really had fun doing this and i hope you enjoyed reading everybody#syn i swear to caraxes i want to know your thoughts on these stat#also textbookchoices where you at? are you a httyd fan or no? did you know about these dudes?#how to train your dragon#riders of berk#race to the edge#dragon lore

Am I the only one who feels like HTTYD isn't as memeable as Shrek or KFP? I know we have "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." and the famous dancing Toothless, but that one was really from a parody recap. Other than that, I really don't see a lot of memes from it.
I think that means HTTYD is successfully doing its job with the type of narration it intends.
There are comedic lines like "talking fishbone" and "thanks for nothing, you useless reptile" that fandom has parroted since the early days. There's Hiccup encouraging Toothless while the Light Fury looks aghast as a meme template. And fandom can find anything to josh with, be it Hiccup's hot froglegs in HTTYD 2, or Hiccup's love affair with scrap metal from RTTE, or throwing everyone in the dungeon who made a Stoick joke (I am DATING my time in the fandom here, y'all). There will always be moments we play with, as it were.
But HTTYD, while funny, is built on heart. Shrek and KFP have heart, too (especially KFP), but they're built around different vibes (especially Shrek). Shrek was an intentional, abrupt, genuinely shocking aberration from animated fairy tale movies. For people who weren't around when it happened, there's a REASON it was a HUGE, rocking sensation and has become part of permanent culture. Meanwhile, KFP is a comedy action. HTTYD, at its core, is the story of a boy and his dragon, and a boy and his dad. I wouldn't expect fan response or general societal response to respond to these different frameworks the same way.
When audiences think about the impact of HTTYD, they aren't thinking about the pleasurable absurdisms that lead to "You're tearing me APART, Lisa!" or "I don't like sand" (which actually, for the record, I think is an unironically good character scene, sue me).
You ever watch a movie where they try soooo hard to be meme-able? Or they're throwing in jokes at places they shouldn't? I'm not not not saying it happened here, but one of the things I think THW could've improved was by reducing the number of gags it tried to run - while competing for time to emotionally conclude a sweeping trilogy. Sometimes it's not the place for a movie to have the content that'd make it meme-able. HTTYD's always been funny, yeah, and that's part of the franchise's charm. But different types of funny bring different audience results, and you ain't gonna beat Shrek when it comes for appropriate humor vibes for memes.
I could be forgetting a ton in my sleep-deprived state. But I'd agree it's not as meme-able as Shrek, one of the most meme-worthy pieces of media to exist. It means both have their place in the ecosystem of movies, and it makes both of them fantastic for what they are.

ALSO ALSO let me throw some httyd character headcanons at you guys please 🌟🌟 (these are mainly based off rtte and the first movie because all my lovelies got ASSASINATED in the second and third movie)
-Snotlout doesn’t like loud parties very much, he can stand it for a while but usually tries to slip away after an hour or two, my mans gets overstimulated :(
-Hiccup is so autistic this is basically canon
-Ruffnut actually really likes dressing up, she just feels self conscious about it. She isn’t used to getting complimented on her appearance at all, so she’s sorta internalized that she’s unattractive :( That being said, in normal situations she kinda carries the “I’m ugly and I could not give less of a fuck about it.” Outlook on life
-Tuffnut is stimming all the time, even in his sleep he’s rubbing his feet together like a scheming fly
-Dagur talks to himself like- all the time, during his lone travels he’d tell himself entire stories off the top of his head, and make up poems, he became quite good at wording things this way
-Heather and Astrid have kissed at least once come on now. Men need to stop getting in the way of my yuri, and they need to stop being so likeable while they do it (ily hiccup and fishlegs)
-That being said Heather is a bi queen and so is Astrid
- Hiccup is the type of autistic that can’t tell the difference between platonic and romantic relationships until it’s spelled out for him in flaming red letters. He also is really oblivious to when he himself has a crush on someone, bro pondered why he thought about Astrid so much for YEARS before he figured out he just found her attractive.
- Astrid loses anything she doesn’t keep on her. Her solution to this is to keep anything she doesn’t want to loose strapped to her person, to hell with everything else.

hiya!
you've mentioned before that most het couples bore you/you're not super into them. but you seem to be into odypen. how do they differ for you from the rest of the het couples?
by the way, this is asked out of genuine curiosity and not meant to be a "gotcha" type question.
i love all your writing (especially your threads on the other app) and everything you've put out on ao3!
"threads on the other app" is such a great way to describe my smut fics on bluesky 😂
also no worries, this is a pretty valid question and I lowkey wondered if someone would ever ask me about it
short answer: it's easier to ship Odypen when I know in my heart that Penelope has a monster dong & Odysseus has that gorilla grip coochie
long answer: I am extraordinarily picky with my het ships & will almost never ship the primary couple in a show/movie/any-other-media on the basis of them being het because I find their relationship miserably predictable and overly simplistic.
I promise I'm going to get to Epic but I'm going to wander on a side tangent for a sec- please bear with me! (Also yeah this response is super long. Who would have imagined that I would go on to blabber for way longer than expected...)
One example I wanna bring up is Percy x Annabeth from PJO. I do not actively ship or care about Percabeth at all, at least not without some AU that vastly complicates their relationship and makes it much harder for them to be together. I do acknowledge they're canon but their story in PJO is so linear. They go from "I'm a kid and here's this other kid I have to get along with" to friends to lovers. Granted, there's some hiccups and little twists here & there but that's it.
And that's the pipeline that probably like 90% of het ships follow. Hiccup & Astrid in HTTYD follow the same formula and for my entire childhood I could not bring myself to care about their dynamic or relationship at all, primarily because I've already seen it before. Especially that dynamic of "cool strong girl" x "main character hero boy who needs her help". I kinda like them more now than I did as a kid, largely bc I do acknowledge they're better written than a lot of other het couples, but still.
But if you know the HTTYD movies, you might be surprised that I actually really like Stoick x Valka because their history is so fraught. Stoick spent 20 years thinking his wife was dead, assuming she was eaten by animals he once viewed as monsters but now views as allies and friends, and as soon as he found out that she was not only alive but afraid to come home to him for all those years... he forgave her. He evolved beyond his original archetype of "powerful man warrior" and just wanted to be a husband again. And then ofc there's the scene that comes AfterTM.
And that's essentially why I never ship m/w shit. I don't necessarily love drama, which is why I don't care for movies or shows or books about intricate love triangles/rectangles/what-have-you if it's just boys chasing after girls who are chasing after other boys.
Maybe it's because I'm aroace and I don't experience attraction the way most other people do, but I need tragedy alongside my romances. I need the emotional turmoil turned up to eleven and will not be satisfied with anything less. And this goes for pretty much every ship I like, het or otherwise.
This is also why I don't really read or write fluff or hurt/comfort fics even if the ship is mlm or wlw or queer in some other capacity. I used to love those as a teen but as an adult, they just don't do much for me anymore. No shade or shame in liking them if you do, but I just need some crazy bad pining/mourning/antagonizing & maybe even an ambiguous ending in all my ships to make them palatable.
Which is why I like Odypen! For all of Epic, Odysseus is constantly aching for his wife & remains super in love with her no matter what he goes through. That alone wouldn't really separate him from a ton of other generic het ships, but it's the fact that Epic explores the depths he's willing to fall to in order to go home to her that makes it interesting to me.
And the fact that it's reciprocal is just the cherry on top. For so much of Epic, Penelope kind of gets the "dead wife" treatment where she's more so a figment haunting the narrative than an actual character, which is a little lame ngl. But once we do finally get to meet her, she's as clever and mean as her hubby is, and that fucking rocks.
Since you've seen my bluesky account you might've already seen this thread I posted a while ago, so I'm just gonna paraphrase what I said for the folks on tumblr:
I think it's so funny how Penelope says "Whoever can string my husband's old bow" and not "Whoever can string my old husband's bow".
In that moment, the suitors (and by extension the audience) kind of glaze over the fact that Penelope is referring to the bow as old, with the implication it's been neglected or discarded all this time, but she doesn't call Odysseus old. She makes the choice to not call Odysseus her "old husband", which is what she probably would've said if she actually wanted to marry one of the suitors.
She (subtly) told those 108 bitches to their faces that no, she's not actually moving on from Ody and they can all fuck themselves. She's not giving up the hope that her real husband is still alive and out there and coming home, so all these stupid suitors can start wasting their time on an impossible challenge.
And that's awesome. That intense mutual devotion to each other is also common in tons of other het ships, but the fact is that after so much time, turmoil, and suffering, they both don't want to give in. It honestly entertains me way more than Percabeth, a couple who literally went through hell together twice, precisely because Percabeth suffered together.
Odypen had to face their own unique trials and tribulations alone for 20 years, with each having the opportunity to easily disregard their marriage and marry someone new but choosing not to.
Not to say that Percabeth isn't interesting, sure they are. But they're just not for me. Their path to getting together is too linear and their love is too untested for my taste.
Which is also probs why I almost exclusively like queer ships. Queer couples/people irl face a ton of tragic bullshit and so do gay ships because those fics are often written by queer authors looking for an outlet for their frustrations. Just look at all the ways omegaverse dissects gender roles and expectations in stories about boys getting pregnant.
TLDR: I like Odypen more than most other het ships because they're tragic af but infused with that delicious sense of unbeatable human willpower. I also dislike most het ships because they're almost never tragic enough for me to be assed to care about them. Bc the thing about tragedy isn't that it's just sad, it's that there's usually very high stakes to be lost if they fail, and that's exciting to me.
#epic the musical#odypen#oh wow look at me#yet another overly long response bc I can't shut up about stuff#also I physically need Penelope to have a cock like I need her to have a girlcock

i have this headcanon that Annabeth is a distant relative of Astrid Hofferson. like think about it; the Chase family has connections with Nordic culture (i.e. Magnus being the son of Frey, Randolf being a Viking enthusiast, etc), so it’s perfectly believable that they might also have Viking ancestors somewhere down the line. and while rewatching HTTYD recently, i noticed so many similarities between Astrid and Annabeth, and not just their appearances. their personalities are super alike: they both play the role of strategist, they’re fierce in battle, they’re both the main character’s right hand—even their type is similar (Hiccup and Percy). idk it makes sense in my head and i love it sm
#Hiccup and Percy would be besties 100%#and Annabeth and Astrid would sympathize with each other over their stupid boyfriends#there are so many parallels#don’t even get me started#percy jackon and the olympians#percy jackson#percy pjo#shitpost#pjo#headcanon#httyd#how to train your dragon#astrid hofferson#httyd astrid#httyd headcanon#pjo headcanon#magnus chase

Okay I get that they gotta rekindle the interest in How to Train Your Dragon because of the new theme park—as if that's necessary, like streaming doesn't keep things relevant for kids born after the time of its release—but WHY A LAZY UGLY LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION?

I think Universal should've just made a new movie in the HTTYD universe.
They should've made it small, simple, with an enormous heart, earnest scene-blocking, winsome characterizations, and subtly gripping animation that blends the cartoon-appeal with just enough realism to be pretty-or-scary-or-exhilarating when needed—just like the original How to Train Your Dragon.
It should be set shortly after the time of How to Train Your Dragon, the first movie. That way we get the small-and-simple-with-epic-heart scale, and we don't introduce all the craziness of Hidden Dragon Ecosystems and Mad Warlord War Machines yet.
Here Let Me Just:
It should be about a kid who lives in Berk and is terrified of dragons.
This made The Kid an outcast a week ago, when Vikings were at war with dragons, already—because what Viking gives in to fear instead of punching their fear in the face?—but now everything is different...and The Kid is still an outcast. Because The Kid is just as afraid of rideable pet dragons as he or she was of enemy-dragons.
The Kid can't bring his or herself to believe that dragons are safe to be around at all. Maybe The Kid has good reason—The Kid's parents were taken by dragons or something. Anyway, The Kid doesn't want to do any of this Brave New World, Learn to Love Dragons stuff. The Kid wants to keep hiding at their no-action job (maybe he-or-she genuinely is training to be a bread-making Viking) where he or she has no friends, and wishes the dragons would just go away.

Anyway, maybe in these early days of Hiccup's New Peace a dragon suddenly appears to be kidnapping people out of the village. Sheep are going missing, too. Houses are burning completely down in the night. So Berk is starting to doubt all over again whether dragons can be trusted. Hiccup and Toothless leave to chase a lead, and our Kid Character is forced out of his or her comfort zone when someone they love is taken by whatever dragon is causing the unrest.
So then The Kid character tries to solve the mystery, and it turns out there's a dragon (NOT a Night Fury, a different flavor of "cool dragon" with a totally different KIND of appeal) who's not causing the kidnappings or burning's but is somehow involved, and is the key to finding whoever is framing the dragons and luring Hiccup and Toothless away from the island to do it. (It should just be a Berk Viking, who's bitter, to foil our Kid Character—not a supervillain.)
Obviously there are challenges, like "how do I make any dragon interesting to spend a movie's length of time with when a Night Fury exists." But the focus and theme would be tighter on "act in spite of fear" rather than Hiccup's story's "understanding trumps fear" type-thing. A sister-message.
And with the plot localized to Berk, you're getting a lot of that classic Island-of-How-To-Train-Your-Dragon imagery, so that going to the new theme park feels relevant because you just watched a movie where that's mostly the setting.
And Hiccup and Toothless can be a bigger part of the story if we want. Whatever. But that's what they should've done. Small, charming, with a you-didn't-see-that-coming classic impact.
something LIKE that
not a new-but-worse take on something that was already perfect

I literally CANNOT watch httyd 3 through because to me it’s not canon. Like seriously I always think about the ending and how disappointing it is. Even in 2 where Hiccup officially becomes chief it just doesn’t sit right with me at all. I can’t tell if it’s that kind of story where everyone is happy in the end, because to me it’s very lukewarm. Hiccstrid getting married is nice and all, but with the dragons leaving and them having a family is just such a typical type of ending. I love that Hiccstrid had kids but I feel like the story should have gone as ‘Hiccup and Astrid have a family, and Hiccup becomes chief when he’s actually ready to?? Like how are you going to basically take his lifeline, Toothless, and all the dragons, throw some jank over feminine dragon into the mix just so something makes sense, make Hiccup gain his mother, (at what cost) , just for Stoick to die, automatically placing Hiccup as chief and have the workload thrown on him as he’s most likely struggling with grief from his father’s passing.
This is definitely character development, and it sure did create a good story, but I would assume that Hiccup would get to live a nice life with Toothless and Astrid especially after how shitty some aspects of his life have been. I know he’s happy with his life with his family, but I can tell he’s probably living with tons of nostalgia. I wonder how hard it was living without Toothless after he left. Can this boy ever catch a damn break.

Hello, Neighbor! (Insert Welcome Home reference here 🏠)
I'm a hundred years late to this, but it's time for me to drop some questions for "The Kingdom of Thorns and Roses"! (I'm craving more Wish content, do this will do for now, lol.)
How did you come with your AU? Is it inspired from other AU's or something else?
What happened to Asha's family in this telling?
Can you drop a little lore about TKOTAR's Star system?
Who's your favorite character to draw in your AU?
Are any of the Teens in this story, are they sent to the oblivion? 😂
I know you mention that Flazino is possibly in your AU, but uh…..is he still alive or actually dead? Cause WG!Flazino can't vent to a dead guy. 😂
Any original characters in here besides Bonsai?
Which other Wish AU's would be some of your favorites?
Are all the songs from the movie included in your story, or us it just certain ones?
How long do you think your story is going to be?
How would TKOTAR!Asha would interact with WG!Asha? (She does have some trouble making friends though, lol)
Any hints for the ending?
Out of questions, but I'll give you a hug! 🤗
OMG QUESTIONS AHHHHHHh🦈🦈

1. How did you come with your AU? Is it inspired from other AU's or something else?
I was inspired from a lot of works! I think what really made me actually GET INTO rewriting Wish was "Alicia and the Kingdom of Star Light" and "At all Costs" Animatics. At first, I originally was going to have Magnifico and Amaya be like this Gaston/Frollo like characters, but overtime, I didn't see them like that! I think this was because my interpitation of Magnifico in the film was more of the "tragic hero" rather than the "tragic villain". Also Asha at the time felt really boring, and Star felt very hallow, which is why I also had to change that super old draft to something new. Overtime, after watching Owl House, Race to the Edge, Wish...15 more times (watched it I think 30 times total), Hunch Back of Notre Dom, and Epic the Musical, I think some of those aspects of what I liked bled into the story. Example, people comparing Magnus to Odesseous LIKE ITS THE VIBE THEYRE NOT THE SAME PERSON-
Not only that, some parts of the story is actually kinda inspired from personal experience! Mainly with the family part- . . . but nothing less, it more inspired from HTTYD and Owl House lol
2. What exactly happed to Asha's family in this telling?
Well...neither of them are dead for starters.
Probably the only Asha who has a fully ALIVE family 💀🙏
3. Can you drop a little lore about TKOTAR's Star system?

Research ^
4. Who is your fav character to draw in your AU?
Agatha my beloved 💕

I don't even draw her a lot, I just love her design lmao
5. Are any of the Teens in the story, or are they sent to oblivion?
Pfftttt they weren't all sent to oblivion Rascal hehehh
Dahlia, Simon, and Gabo will most likely be the ones to end up in the story, so most of the teens are here.
I have some ideas to how they tie into Asha in terms of how they know her on a personal/co-worker relationship.
Dahlia WAS Asha's friend during the best parts of her childhood, before Asha distanced herself from her. Her arc is best kept secret for story reasons, but I think it is pretty wholesome.
Simon I'm sorta concidering to be some form of body guard while Asha goes into the Market.
Gabo probably will the the "consipiracy person who is actually right" type of guy heh- Also a friend Star becomes close with! (He totally does not teach him how to swear-)
I do want to incorpiate Hal and Bazeema and probably Flazino somehow in the story, just not sure how and what sort of purpose they will serve at the moment.
I still don't have designs for them, but I will soon hopefully :D
6. I know you mention that Flazino is possibly in your AU, but uh…..is he still alive or actually dead? Cause WG!Flazino can't vent to a dead guy 😂
So I guess he is now the Therapist! Flazino in my AU? IS THAT WHAT UR SAYING???? (I love it)
Too bad all the therapists are dead in Rosas because of the incident. No wonder Flazino probably dies from poisining. He knew too much.
Anyways no need to worry for the dead guy in the room that probably wont exist in my AU, the dead do exist as ghosts in some way so WG Flazino can still vent to him lmao
(ghosts cant talk tho (but then again, he drank poison which could have ruined his vocal cords but still))

He is looking out for WG Flazino :D (He was killed by drinking a mYsTeRiOuS LiQuId )
Just realized he kinda looks like Hermes- naurrrr not intentionalllll bc he looks like that bc he ded :(((
7. Any original characters in here besides Bonsai?
OK ROSAS, HERE IS ALL OG CHARACTERS IN THE STORY (THIS INCLUDES REPLACEMENTS)
Bonsai
Agatha
Thomas
Morning Star
Captain of the Guard, NOT PHEBUS (I dont have a name for him-)
Evelyn (minor character)
Atticus (minor character)
Agatha's parents (minor character)
Magnus' Father (minor character)
(what I mean by minor characters, I mean that they wont really show up in the story except in portraits or mentions unless I do a lore video that could include them)
CREATURES:
Dragons
Sirens
THE FUCKING FAIRES I HOPE YOU DIE LIKE KYS
Trolls
Ghosts/Ghouls (Good Ghouls Go Bad is a pretty good movie go watch it)
Forest/Water Nymths
Serpants
Kraken probably
Stars (ofc)
probably will be more
They all probably won't show up in the story, but know that they exist.
ALSO THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT, SO HERE IS A CONCIDERATION I HAD.
Although I am personally not sure if they will ever be in the story, along with Flazino, BUT...HERE ME OUT-
A ATLAS BASED CHARACTER. I MEAN THINK ABOUT IT
In Greek mythology, HE HOLDS UP THE FUCKING SKY??? LIKE??? BRO-
AND HE IS A TITAN?/?? ANDD IT WOULD MAKE SENSE??? KINDA???
Not sure, but I wanna put that there because I think a Atlas based character in a story with a sky filled with Star creatures is very interesting.

8. Which other Wish AU's would be one of your Favorites?

I don't pick favorites between fanfics. I personally love them all and I think a lot of them are really interesting retellings!
Except for the freaky ones
I hate you Hiccup x Toothless fanfic go burn (made me not trust fanfics for a long time💀🙏) (BTW I DIDN'T READ IT MY SIBLING READ IT OUT LOUD TO ME AND WE WERE LIKE 😨😨🐄🏃♂️💨)
9. Are all the songs from the movie included in your story, or us it just certain ones?
Certain ones. It overall depends on execution in the story.
Im a star is removed for obvious reasons.
But as I honestly think about musical instruments tieing with their respected characters, I might have to make completely different songs for almost all of them-
OK for what I mean by this...
The 4 main characters, Agatha, Magnus, Asha, and Star have their respected instruments tied to their character. This is due to because a lot of the music surrounding the characters in classic disney had instruments tying with their character or enviroment. Ariel, for example, as more whimsical or wonderous music, as she sings "a part of your world". Unfortunatly, I found Wish's instruments not fitting to how I interepret the characters and went for a completely different route.
Asha is mainly tied with either the chello or violin in my version. "BUT ISN'T THE VIOLIN USUALLY TIED WITH THE VILLAIN??" Thats where I say "Does it have to be?" I want to shake it up a bit instead of the violin being just used for "EVIL", because it can be used to tell SUCH EMOTIONAL beats. Here is a cover of the "This Wish" I found:
youtube
And here is the actual song:
youtube
OFC, I would personally add more instruments to the violin cover for it to hit harder. I ironically found a "Epic" (not sure if it is to the Epic the Musical or just Epic version lol) version that hit so hard, I felt like I was ascending:
youtube
Listening to different instruments PLAYING THE SAME SONG hits a LOT MORE DIFFERENT. LIKE YOU FEEL DIFFERENT EMOTIONS LIKE WHAT-
Also a more prominant example is "Dandalions" by Ruth B.
Here is the original:
youtube
Here is the Violin cover (funny enough I listened to this version first before the original. Personally, I think the Violin is better)
If anything, I think the gutair is overused in Disney protagonists, Mirabel had one, Moana had one, and probably more. I just wanted to do something different!
For Star, I imagined the whimsical part of Neverland or more or less instruments that give you that feel, like flutes for example. Or hell, more lullaby! Honestly the best example I can give to show what I am going for is something like:
youtube
Maybe even the At All costs instumental tying in both the Asha's instruments and His instruments at the same time can hit more different.
For both Agatha and Magnus, I liked how the trumpets were tied to the scenes they were in, like when Magnifico calls for a meeting and the trumpet plays, I honestly really liked that! But it doesn't have to be trumpets alone! I imagine Magnus/Agatha to have both a electric guitar/piano tied to their characters! Trumpets can be used to enhance the song their singing!
Here is a example (Ik it is a rewrite version, but I think this is a good one!)
youtube
Unironically, there is not a lot of villain songs that I know of that use pianos. I think it is because it is more in ties with dispair moments rather than actual villain songs. Doesn't mean that they don't exist, its just uncommon.
Why am I ranting about this? Well, blame this guy:
He is right yk-
Shut up.
You shut up

10. How long do you think your story is going to be?
AT least 2-3 months, possibly more or less. It depends.
11. How would TKOTAR!Asha would interact with WG!Asha? (She does have some trouble making friends though, lol)
Ah both interovernts! My fav.
TKORAT! Asha also has trouble making friends. Its mainly due to her having trouble trusting someone and also some more personal issues (this goes for everyone, not just WG! Asha) I think at first TKORAT! Asha would at first just avoid talking to WG! Asha, until after a while, they have a nice cup of tea and just chat! Def would be Art buddies.

12. Any hints for the ending?
I have no idea. Just a lot of chopped up parts in my head. Probably smth like this:

and probably:
What have I done....WHAT HAVE I DONE-
13. Out of questions, but I'll give you a hug! 🤗

Thanks for the Asks Rascal! 💕

just watched the httyd la, thoughts under the cut (mostly neg)
overall i think the movie was fine? it was httyd, hard to mess it up. though a lot of scenes were weirdly paced and some dialogue/character moments were cut out which made it worse. also some of the music was kinda weird and out of place (in my opinion) though not super common.
some things i noticed about the movie:
i didnt like the changes in narration at the beginning. idk why they mentioned so much that the vikings settled there to fight dragons (point of finding nest in og is to make the dragons move elsewhere, tho everyone is trying to defend their far away homes by killing the nest???), they couldve just let characters be poc w/o needing to make a reason, its already established that the vikings travel and explore a lot, no more reason needed
the downed dragon scene was kinda really bad. they cut the "the gods must hate me. some vikings lose a mug," line and just had "i lost a dragon" or something, it was weird and choppy, why was half the line cut?? i dont like how toothless looks. i feel like he was a bit more sad puppy than wild animal that knows hes about to die? i hate the shade of green that his eyes are. no hiccup hyping himself up with the "i'm a viking" speech even though thats an important part? like him very obviously posturing and pretending to be a viking and how much it doesnt suit him because hes not a viking!! he is different from the rest of his village!! cutting out the "i did this" line... insane. i did however like the part where hiccup walked away, liked how it was a bit longer than the og. made hiccup going back to cut toothless out have a bit more weight. HOWEVER i dont like that they showed hiccup walking back?? why didnt they show toothless and play the rope cutting sound like the og? that tension was lost in the la. also dont like how toothless didnt have a claw on hiccups chest/throat, removed a lot of the threat from the scene, took some of the weight away from the moment.
the framing/camera angles during the part where the gronkle almost kills hiccup was weird. idk common thread of weird framing/weird line delivery, hard to remember every example (there was a lot)
the scene where hiccup draws toothless was kinda weirdly long. and the drawing looked bad.
the added scene where hiccup talks to astrid about the morality of killing dragons was a little weird, seems really early for him to bring it up in a village literally founded on killing dragons?? though it made astrids line later "figure out which side youre on" make more sense. didnt love how astrid wanted to become chief though i liked how she was annoyed at hiccup for not wanting to be.
the dragon book scene was SO BAD though.. when he was flipping through the dragon types. it was all so rushed with very little pictures, no tension, no thunder, no pictures on the page moving around. weirdly paced, was bad.
forbidden friendship... idk something was off about it. the raw fish looked really gross. the part where hiccup kicked the knife away was kinda bad? i didnt even realize that thats what toothless wanted lmao. however i did like how toothless didnt immedietely look super friendly after hiccup kicking the knife like og, i think in the og it made toothless look really friendly and cute too quick, la took a bit longer. toothless smiling looked. so bad. again it was kinda hard to tell that thats what he was doing. it just looked bad. they cut the scene of toothless looking at the bird flying away. why? its supposed to show how toothless misses flight. no more bird. also the drawing scene? in the og it looks kinda like toothless draws hiccup, showing that hes intelligent. in the la its just scribbles, i guess to make toothless seem more like an animal?? didnt realllly love it though minor detail as in the og its kinda hard to notice.
the scene where hiccup makes the tail is kinda bad? a lot of the hammering and stuff looks very weak, whereas in the original hiccup puts his whole weight into fanning the flames and stuff, makes it look less cool. also cut out the scene of hiccup redrawing the tail fin which is a part i really like, sad! and toothless starts flying like right away when the new tail is put on. no realization on his face, no slow rising of his wings and extension of his tail fin while hiccup is unaware, no building tension. it just happens.
hiccup scratching toothless in the see you tomorrow scene looks REALLY bad you can tell theres no dragon there. i did like the part where hiccup sat down in the dining hall and snotlout jumped over the table and knocked hiccups cup over, thought it was fun. the scene cuts out the part where hiccup gets stuck to toothless and has to go into the village to unstick himself, which i think is fine cause i never liked that part anyways. always felt unnecessary.
test drive... hiccup falling off of toothless looked REALLY bad. i didnt like the music playing instead of the sound of them falling, i think the panic really draws you in, while the music makes it seem less real. hiccup grabs the paper like 10-20 seconds after he drops it instead of right away, which like he shouldnt be able to?? also him and toothless falling looks bad. i do like the part where he scrambles to get on toothless, its a bit longer than og and shows the struggle a bit more.
astrid and toothless meeting was... bad. no tension, so many dialogue lines cut, astrids line delivery really dull. when toothless starts picking up the signals of the dragons den theres not really a lot of focus on it, he kinda just sharply turns instead of in the og where the camera focuses on him while astrid and hiccup are talking and he turns his head a lot, kinda weird and nothing
while in the dragons den they dont say "glad to know all our foods being dropped down a hole", dont even think they say "theyre not eating any of it". also the queen just doesnt bite after toothless, wayyy less tension in this scene too. the part where astrid talks to hiccup about telling stoick about the nest is kinda weird, line delivery was flat
the kill ring.... the scene where hiccup and astrid talk before is changed SO MUCH. hiccup tells astrid that if something goes wrong she should stay out of it, astrid says she'll stay by hiccups side no matter what. no mention of toothless, no promise of keeping him safe, astrid doesnt ask hiccup to promise to stay safe, hiccup doesnt get cut off from promising... the monstrous nightmare moves less interestingly and doesnt have the really large hook claws, toothless runs because he hears the nightmare roar?? not hiccup scream. i did like the fight between toothless and the monstrous nightmare, i think it looked cooler than og. what i DIDNT like is that they cut the part where toothless was really obviously protecting hiccup, just had the dragons seperate and toothless like roared a bit and the monstrous nightmare went back into its cage. no toothless standing in front of hiccup and snapping whenever it got too close. hiccup kinda takes a while to say anything about them attacking toothless/toothless attacking them. weird.
toothless doesnt knock the green death over with a shot. it just kinda like stumbles a bit. idk small issue. also like... the part where toothless+hiccup are flying down and waiting for the green death to fill its mouth with gas....... it has gas in its mouth for soooo long... hiccups like "just hold on"... "a little longer"... and the whole time gas is like spewing out of its mouth. like a lot. and theres no mention in the movie of dragons being fireproof on the inside (cut out) so its weird.
i dont think stoick apologized after freeing toothless? i may be misremembering but im pretty sure he just has the "im proud to call you my son". and hiccup responds "thats all i need" or something which i feel a little bit undermines him wanting to fit in w everybody not just his dad? the lines where stoick says "you dont have to go up there" and hiccup saying "we're vikings. its an occupational hazard" were both cut which is a shame cause theyre so memorable
the wheres hiccup scene... stoick doesn't say "i did this".. because its not paralleling the downed dragon scene so ig it doesnt matter?? also stoick isnt wearing his viking helmet in the scene so when he checks for hiccups heartbeat he doesnt have to throw it to the side. small change but i always felt like it was symbolic of him throwing away the old viking beliefs like hiccup did in the ring.
the scene where hiccup wakes up in berk is a little weird too. i dont know how to explain but in the og toothless goes from excited, then hiccup like realizes his leg is gone (not revealed to audience) and toothless like calms down and acts emotionally. then when his foot is revealed toothless sniffs it. in the la toothless is excited, then hes not shown again until he sniffs the foot, so the change in emotion is kinda gone. the part where hiccup trips and toothless catches him is a little awkward.
they cut out hiccups line about making a few adjustments to his new foot (one of many instances of hiccups sass being removed) and added in a part about stoick and everyone else flying back to berk (feels like them trying to explain a plothole that never existed, people can assume that w/o having to be told)
some additional notes:
ruffnut and tuffnut had less personality, a lot of their lines were changed/removed. kinda sad
i liked the added parts w snotlout trying to get approval from his father, some of my fave additions to the la. if the adaption was more like that (adding things that actually add depth instead of just changing/removing stuff) it wouldve been better
some of the jokes were funny, like the "did your dad pull some strings?" to hiccup being in dragon training
a lot of hiccups sass/jokes from the og were removed, like the excuse me barmaid. sad.
the actors were. not great. i think some of it was bad direction but so many lines were delivered poorly/flat/like they were read directly off the script. the actor playing hiccup had some scenes where he had some good subtle facial expressions, but other than that kinda bad.
a lot of the scenes were really obviously trying to be the same as the og but trying to not be identical, made the pacing really weird and caused things like dragon nip being replaced w dandelions
i did like the way hiccup and astrid interacted in some scenes, like the way he walked up to her in the dragon book scene was kinda cute, i think it sold him having a crush on her a bit better than the og at points
i liked how hiccup had a scar on his chin!! cool detail! there were moments that showed an obvious attention to detail, its obvious ppl cared when making the movie.
when stoick entered hiccups room to talk about killing the dragon. and in the og hiccup was like flicking a pen up and down. classic bored behaviour. in the la they changed it to him playing w like a dragon toy?? like where you wind it and it looks like its flying. idk small change but i preferred the bored pen flick, i think it was a lot more relatable as a kid (did that so often) and had more character. whered he even get the dragon toy from?? doubt they made those in berk, so did hiccup make it??
i liked the dragons in the dragon nest, it was clear how much variety there was in species and them all flying out was really cool.
overall i think the movie was still decent, the story is pretty much the same so its good. but omg the pacing and framing and line delivery of so many scenes was so bad it was weird.
#httyd#httyd live action#httyd live action salt#<- theres good things i say too but mostly not#anyways um really long post#idk theres prob more that im forgetting (def a ton of moments of weird lines/pacing/etc but i dont need to say all)#there might even be some good things im forgetting

How do you draw dragons so well?!? I love dragons and when I draw them they are a cute realistic/cartoony type thing but yours look so realistic!! I wish I could do that so great job to you!! Also how do you draw them at angles and how do you draw legs and arms so well?!? Just great job!!
Ahhhh thank you! I also adore dragons, they’ve been a huge part of my life for gosh, probably over 15 years now! It’s an absolute delight to find people that also love them like I do! (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧
For a how to, I did make this post a few years ago now, so the art’s a little older, but the general structure and process is definitely still how I go about it! I usually look up dragon poses and heads to get angles right, but also use animal photos for references depending on the type of dragon (tigers or sometimes bears for large characters like Raph or Error, and cats or ferrets for others like Mikey or Dream lmao)
Details come more from references and art books. Honestly, I highly recommend the Dracopedia by William O’Connor, and Dragon Art by Graeme Aymer! Both have stellar artwork and good information!
I also took a lot of inspiration from the HTTYD books as a kid, and grew up admiring artists like Anne Stokes and Neytirix (〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜
#and obviously practice#but that gets thrown out there so much I think it goes without saying hahaha#cbjsbfjsn I’m ramblin now can talk about art forever hahaha#feel free to ask for more detail or images or anything of the sort if you want!#I’d gladly do like a speedpaint or somethin#asks#dragons

-question game-
I LOVE this idea @the-little-moment you came up with some amazing questions!
Any eating utensil preferences? Depends on the food but I do love using chopsticks whenever I can :)
A genre of music you love? Bluegrass Americana!
A type of seasoning/condiment that would make anything edible for you? TARTAR SAUCE, it’s a Seattle thing. But it’s so good.
Pens or pencils? What kind? Pencils! Any 0.5 mechanical pencil, the wider the grip the better because I grip my pencils like a caveman.
What's your weirdest/most interesting hobby? Dog mushing. It’s the hardest to explain, especially when people know I only have one dog. I would argue that doing it with one dog is kinda the best though.
If you had to get rid of one color entirely, what would it be? If we didn’t have blue, everything blue would probably be purple, and that would make me happy. Nothing against blue, I just love purple more.
Any allergies? Not really, just mild pollen? Haven’t had a bad reaction in a long time.
Favorite fictional character? Of all time it’s probably Toothless from HTTYD. Buuuut in Star Wars it might be Captain Rex or Omega. So hard to choose though.
Favorite real person that you don't personally know? Jim Henson!!
How many alarms do you have set? 3! More if i have to wake up for something I DONT want to do.
Do you have any pets? Do you want some? I have one doggy! He’s got a lot of behavioral issues but he’s a great companion. I also have a 5 gal fish tank with Pygmy corydoras and a snail, trying to decide if I want to add another betta or an African dwarf frog soon! Whenever my living situation allows for it, I’d LOVE to adopt some rabbits. And eventually one day my dream is to own a couple of donkeys! They’re such sweeties and I think they’re just the best.
Favorite drink, alcoholic or non? ROOT BEER, bathe me in root beer. My favorite is Blue Sky but it’s really hard to find.
Favorite smell? I can’t choose between jasmine or coffee beans.
Favorite shoes? I love Altra running shoes and hiking boots! Haven’t gotten a single blister in any of them, even on a 40 mile backpacking trip.
How do you feel about bugs and spiders? I have a healthy aversion to some bugs and spiders I think, but they also fascinate me and I love drawing them. But as of moving into a basement apartment I am TERRIFIED of Wolf Spiders. They’ve bitten me while I was sleeping, found them on my arm while cleaning, i regularly have nightmares about them. I have spider traps and I’ve caught ones of an ungodly size.
Outdoors or indoors? Outdoors!
Sunny or rainy? If I were to choose one it would be rain. Rain means I can go to any park or trail with my dog and not have to worry about it being crowded.
Where would you really like to visit? Would you move there? New Zealand is number one on my list, from what I know about it I would certainly move there! It has pretty much everything I love about where I live now, and more.
Are you a people person? Yes! I struggle a bit socially, as we all do, but I am a naturally friendly person and get a lot of fulfillment from quality time :)
At what temperature do you keep your home (or would if you could? 65, I like it cold :)

Some fresh takes on 'Characters reading the PJO books'
So I have read a ton of fics in this trope. I initially invested in these types of fics to understand canon better - a shortcut if you will. And I have enjoyed quite a few of the as evident by some posts I have done. Even as some are still WIP, there are still more cropping up.
While there are a few that stand out with interesting premises, most of the time it's the same old same old with everyone idolizing Percy and lavishing him with praise about how great he is. With a few admonishments here and there regarding his disrespect. And that's great! I love Percy having friends who show his love for him and seeing other characters support him and recognize how he has been mistreated! Unless of course Percabeth is still a main ship so -
Anyway, but everything is good in moderation and at this point, I wish to see some fresh new takes on this trope that doesn't involve a Percy love fest. Percy may be the MC but I am tired of him. It's almost like when I eat chocolate everyday - after a while it begins to make me feel sick no matter how much I love it.
Here are some concepts or ideas I would like to see or see more of:
Viewing screens
So far, I have seen approx three fleshed out series /stories that allow characters to have visuals. With the tv show happening, I hope this would inspire people to have more of this set up when characters experience the books. Just because PJO is a book series, it doesn't mean the characters literally have to read the books!
More ship variety!
I honestly don't mind Percy being single. I can't get enough seafam and Percy doesn't need a romantic partner. But gosh, if it's not Percabeth, it's Perpollo! I like Perpollo, but it's basically the gay Percabeth. Meaning it's the default slash ship for Percy in fics if the author is not doing Percabeth. There was this one fic where I think the author was pushing Percy/Pollux, and it was kind of refreshing? I don't care about Pollux, and I was kind of disappointed because I wanted Perachel at the time, but it was nice to see variety. And hey, I have come to like the idea of certain ships due to fanfic like Annabeth/Connor, even though I don't care about either of them 🤷🏿.
Ancient Greek gods
I like how casual Apollo and Hermes can be in the typical fic in this trope. But it's so refreshing to see the gods acting more regal and godly. Having the ancient version of the gods react to the books adds a fun dynamic to the affair. Percy and the others can't disrespect the gods in this era like they can with the modern gods, and it's fun to see the ancient gods react to their future versions. Unfortunately, there is no completed fic for this yet.
Having antagonists present
I am mainly talking about Luke here. But Ethan and Alabaster would be great too! My main problem is that all these fics lack a balanced view of the war. I want to see an author explore Luke and other TA demigods' perspectives. Why are the gods better than the titans? How do demigods who aren't important enough for prophecies feel? Having Percy as the mouthpiece for this balanced view often feels hollow in my opinion. Also, a lot of Luke's character is often from Percy's assumptions and bias. I want Luke there to counter and make a case for himself. Heck, throw in some titans too for some extra family drama. Which leads to my next point...
More Luke & Hermes!
What I like about Danny Phantom and HTTYD reaction fics is how these fics help the protag bond and reconcile with their parent(s). I love seeing Percy interact with the seafam. We sometimes see Hermes reconcile with Chris regarding his claiming. WHY IS THIS NOT DONE WITH LUKE?! All the fics that have Luke as part of the reading audience are WIP, but even those don't show any effort to have Luke and Hermes interact. This trope would provide a good opportunity for Luke and Hermes to come to an understanding. Yeah, Chris was unclaimed, but can we address the broken relationship with Hermes and Luke, please! Chris ultimately doesn't matter in the books! Look, I know a lot of these writers are Percy lovers, and I am sure most of them hate Luke or don't really care that much about him. But gosh, is it frustrating. Sigh.
Reading the demigod diaries
It's honestly shocking that no one has done a fic where the characters read the demigod diaries. Instead of following Percy like every other fic popping up, why not follow Luke's life starting from DoLC? I am not sure how the plot would go but there is potential there. But it would require more effort.
Character reacting to AUs
I saw this idea in a HTTYD fic. Maybe have the book characters react to the tv show? I have seen fics like these. For example, there is this fic where the seafam reads the books and as they change history the books change too :). Or there is this Perpollo WIP where the gods watch this AU where Percy was not a forbidden child. I just think this idea is cool! Maybe there could be an AU where the gods are good parents and the demigods react to canon where their parents ignore them. Just imagine AU!Luke and Canon!Luke interacting, how jealous and bitter canon Luke would be to see AU!Luke with loving parents.
Titans react
Can we have more fics where the titans react to their future selves in the books? I think the titans were undercooked so badly in the books and I never saw why the gods were better than the titans. Kronos ate his kids, so what? Kronos is one titan. What makes clown Zeus better? Zeus ate Metis and no one gives a damn. There was one fic I saw with this premise, but of course it became an entire thing about Percy being like a mini Kronos. Ugh! It would be cool to have the gods and titans together and have them hash out their family drama.
This is not meant to bash writers. These are just things I wish to see. I know the books are from Percy's perspective but that doesn't mean the fic needs to be a Percy ass kissing session. Explore the antagonists more. Do something different. Eventually, I gradually lost interest in the works I was subscribed to because they all started to sound the same.
