GUN PLAY x THE STAR
He’d read online that it could be healing, like some kind of deranged immersion therapy, and though he thought he might die admitting his curiosities, Mickey went so far as to tell Ian—“Wouldn’t be loaded, doesn’t even have to be a real fuckin’ gun, I just thought, maybe…” Surprisingly, Ian had gotten on board fairly quickly. Even more surprising was the sweet sense of relief that swept through Mickey as the cold metal of the barrel trailed up his thigh towards his taint.

In a cozy café in Amsterdam, with plush sofas and warm lighting, a group of people sit around talking, laughing, and playing board games. But something noticeable is missing. There is not a single phone in sight. It's one of a regular series of community events held by the burgeoning Offline Club, where members pay around $8.00 to leave their phone in a lock box at the door and spend the next few hours unplugged. Demand is growing rapidly. What started as a local initiative is quickly turning into a global movement with regular events hosted in cafés, churches, and town halls selling out fast across the UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
2025 marks the turning point when people will try to spend less time on screens and to reclaim meaningful in-person connections.
Yondr, founded in the US, partners with comedy clubs, arenas, clubs, and schools to organize phone-free events. Jack White, Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, John Mayer, Madonna, and Adele have all implemented cell phone bans at their concerts so they could stop looking out at a sea of blinking smartphones, and to help the audience to connect by disconnecting.
Meetup, the global platform that enables over 60 million people to use the internet to get off the internet and meet up in the real world, had a 19 percent rise in registrations in 2023. The latest Meetup Measurement Report showed that the number one reason people use the platform is to find meaningful connections in person, a 50 percent rise over previous years. “Friends” is the most popular search term for events, and “Book Club” is back in the top 10.
We are reaching toward things that knit us back into the social fabric of local life. According to new research in the UK from the National Lottery Community Fund, half of UK adults intend to participate in local volunteering activities, both formally and informally in 2024. Over 70 percent say it's important to them to feel part of their local community.
The growing demand for real-world interactions is emerging from a confluence of societal challenges, namely the increasing awareness of the adverse effects of spending way too much time on screens, and the loneliness epidemic. Recent research by Gallup showed that 80 percent of young people under the age of 18 report feeling lonely, with 22 percent saying they have no real friends. Zero. Twelve percent of adults admitted to having no close friends in 2021, compared to just 3 percent 30 years ago. In these stats is a collective cry of loneliness. People don't just want followers anymore; they want real friendships.
But 2025 could mark the turning point of this deep friendship recession. It is the year when a rising number of people swap screen time for real-world interactions.
Today, there is a deep sense of loss or longing, across generations, for a time before constant connectivity, apps, and algorithms. That sentiment is called anemoia, the nostalgia for a time or a place one has never known.
Take the recent rise in popularity of vinyl records, Polaroid cameras, board games, and even mixtapes. According to the Recording Industry Association of American, 43.2 million EPs/LPs were sold last year, up from less than a million in 2006. From classic card games to board sets such as Monopoly and Cluedo, the compound annual growth for the board gaming market is over 9 percent. The Polaroid market is expected to double over the next seven years from $2.93 billion in 2024 to over $5.72 billion in 2031. Or the surprising resurgence of independent booksellers enjoying their sixth consecutive year of growth—a revival meeting the demand for real recommendations from real people. As of 2023, there are 2,185 independent bookstores in the United States and 1,072 in the UK.
There is a clear pining for a pre-dating-app era, with younger generations moving away from the endless swiping and “ghosting.” According to the 2023 Statista survey, millennials make up 61 percent of dating app users, whereas Gen-Z comes in at only 26 percent. Dating apps like Bumble have introduced local IRL events, including tennis tournaments, cooking or spin classes, and cocktail nights, marketed on the promise to “meet up, chat, and make moves in person.”
2025 is when people start to reclaim the communal experiences and deeper connections that have been lost in our lives. It marks a critical societal turning point where people prioritize real-world connections over the deluge we face on our digital devices. To reconnect by disconnecting.

Hop to it
Also on AO3 [650w] @212thappreciation week 2024 - day 2: downtime/hobbies
The problem with war, Commander Cody knows, is that the life of a soldier can best be summarised as ‘hurry up and wait’. Brief moments of terror peppering a more usual pattern of alternating sheer drudgery and stultifying boredom.
In practice, this means that while the naval crews are busy sending venators careening across the galaxy from hotspot to hotspot, the ground troops are packed into said ships with nothing to do. There is the usual training of course, and additional cross-training, but this is far insufficient to keep occupied a battalion’s worth of energetic, creative young idiots.
So Cody and the other Commanders set about finding their men hobbies; such as they can with their limited space and access to materials. A rotation of sports games is organised in the larger training rooms for those needing to burn off energy. Music, both vocal and percussive, becomes a common background soundtrack. Their small library of holobooks and movies are pored over obsessively and added to when possible. Similarly, storytellers – whether of sagas or amusing anecdotes or choice gossip – are highly prized in any platoon. Cards or dice, and the associated gambling, make their appearance as a staple of soldiers everywhere. Crafts are less common, but whenever they can get access to yarn knitting circles pop up like mushrooms, while sketching supplies are more readily available.
It is this last hobby, combined with a certain children’s game they were introduced to on their last relief mission, that gives Cody the idea. He talks to his General, and the next supply drop includes several crates of chalk sticks. These are distributed to volunteer squads with strict instructions – not in the officers’ wing, not in main thoroughfares or maintenance corridors, and don’t be vulgar – and Cody sits back to watch the chaos unfold.
The first markings that show up are simple replicas of the hopscotch board they had seen on the planet, curious troopers gathering around as others demonstrate the rules. Then, almost overnight, it seems as though every second passageway has been overtaken by white scribbles. Some have the hopscotch grid simply extended or with other minor variations, but that quickly morphs into corridors with scattered markings for the troopers to leap between, even the occasional boot- or handprint on the walls to push off from. Other corridors have long meandering lines to follow along their length, or a patchwork grid of lines to avoid. Yet others leave a path clear down the centre, but fill the edges and walls with complex murals of varying degrees of skill.
Cody is amazed at how well his idea is turning out. No-one is obliged to follow the chalked guidelines, if they are busy or injured or just not interested. But more often than not, he sees troopers absentmindedly following the white lines or laughing as they leap their way down the hall. Some of the more popular routes even have clusters of troopers hovering in the intersections as they wait for their turn at the next section. Morale is at an all-time high.
This lasts for a glorious ten-day… until Cody is visited by their chief Environmental Engineer. Venators, he reminds the Commander, are carefully calibrated closed systems, and the Negotiator’s environmental systems are already working towards the upper end of their capacity with a full complement of crew and passengers. And chalk dust is apparently particularly effective at clogging their air filters. As much fun as everyone is having, he is sure that they would prefer boredom to not breathing.
Cody is forced to concede the point, and with much reluctance the chalk is washed away. The whole experience relegated to holos and fond memories.
(And if Cody overhears chatter about immortalising some of their favourite obstacles in paint, he just hopes that they have the sense not to do so anywhere that he has to admit to seeing it.)

Okay I would like to join the bandwaggon and make a post about those gmmtv 2025 bl trailers we got today. I was at work so I haven't seen anything except the OFDO trailer because I had to. Now I would also like to add that I'm still fairly new to this whole Thai BL rabbit hole and that I still need to get to know all the ships but for the most part I'm proud to say that I know quite a few by now. I'm also here for dark stuff. The darker the better so I hope one or two of those shows will be darker/more supernatural/more thriller based. Ticket To Heaven: Now hear me out, I don't usually go for the religious/church related stuff so I'm not really sure if I will like the vibe of this one. However, I love GeminiFourth and they're fantastic actors so I might end up giving this a try anyway. Having watched this trailer now I can see how dramatic this is gonna be and I can already tell just based from this that Fourth will deliver 100% so I am here for it. Most definitely gonna give this a try. Memoir of Rati: Just based on the title it feel like this is something more historical which also isn't my cup of tea. Okay, forget what I just said, they're blessing me with more GreatInn and I don't care what this is about, I'm in. After Wandee Goodday being in my top favourite shows of 2024 I am so thrilled to get GreatInn in another drama again so soon. I have not even watched the trailer yet but I'm 100% down for this. Wow, they look dashing. No surprise there but yes. "From a romantic novel". That alone should be a no for me already but again, I see GreatInn, I watch. All the French...I even understand that lmao. Gonna admit I don't know the second couple in this series. Another one I will learn about very soon I guess.
Wu: Already like the vibe of this. I don't know this couple but all the tarot cards have my attention. Hmm finally some action! Okay the fantasy elements and the darker background music have my attention 100% and I will definitely give this a try. Me and Thee: Do I know this couple? They don't ring a bell. I don't think I've seen them anywhere. Yet. I see that they play in some of the dramas that are on my to watch list so I will see them pretty soon I guess. Anyway, back to the trailer. "A soap opera loving mafia" okay those are words I never thought i'd hear in a sentence but here we are. Mafia boss dude is pretty. I probably will give this a try too. Watch me add all those shows to my watchlist and then get overwhelmed again when I have to watch 15 series at once. A Dog and A Plane: MY BOY!! Okay this is definitely going on my watchlist. I don't even have to watch this trailer to know that. It's my home boy and my ghost hunting duo and yes and thank you very much I am so excited!!! Oh Marc's in here too! I didn't actually know him but now that I watch Perfect 10 Liners I get to meet so many new faces. Ah I love the Peaceful Property vibes between TayNew. This is gonna be so much fun. Oh he's got Tattoos. Me gusta mucho. This looks hilarious. I love the vibe. OOOH Poon's in here too!! Do we get another MarcPoon? I effing LOVE PondSand in P10L and I would absolutely LOVE to have them back for another series. Okay but me getting both TayNew AND MarcPoon in the same series? Sign me tf up. Thank you very much.
My Magic Prophecy: Title already got me intrigued. Oh is that JimmySea? I don't actually know Jimmy yet to be completely honest but I loved Sea in The Trainee so that's exciting. A Doctor and a Fortune Teller. Okay, that sounds interesting. I'm on board. GMMTV wouldn't be anything if they didn't bring at least one doctor show. Is this the Tarot season? Already the second show with Tarot cards lmao. Not that I mind. It's just interesting. Boys in Love: Well, every show on this list could have this title lmao. Oh it's another school drama. AY PAPI! My man is back! Love that for me. Given this is a school series this must be the new generation of actors so I won't know anyone. Except Papang of course. Oooh it's Chokun! I DO know someone from the younger generation. My boy Half is back. I missed him. He's adorable. Gods they all look like babies. It looks like I'm about to adopt more children. THE DIMPLES!! Oooh it's Papi and Dr. Ter. Papang with the glasses is a whole different mood. I didn't come here for romantic comedies why am I watching so many romantic things. I hate this rabbit hole. Cat for Cash: Another FirstKhao show? FirstKhao AND cats? Yes, you got me at cats. Is this the FirstKhao rom-com people have been waiting for? Lmao, what in the Dr. Dolittle is happening xD FirstKhao running a cat café. When did we get here. The most random concept and I'm here for it. Oh, here comes the drama. Oh great, we already getting the Khao breakdown in the trailer. I can not believe I'm down for that FirstKhao rom-com. Me who always wants the dark stuff but I'm excited to see them in a lighter series. Seems like I get First doing more comedy so I'm looking forward to this.
Mu-Te-Luv: I don't know what this title means but let's see. And more Tarot cards. I do like the sound of magic. Don't know main guy. Oh, he's the same dude as in "Wu". Ooooh, my ghost hunting badass queen is also in this? And she gets to scream once again xD Luke, my man!! So many people who don't ring a bell ^^' This cast is huge. OH MY GODS!! I so have to watch this just for Neo dressed like this. And YASS! I get my boy back too!! Also being so badass. Look at them! I can't. This is hilarious. 100% here for the Queen of Queens xD Lmao I would watch a comedy show just with those four. My gods, they are hilarious. Oooh, OhmLeng? Yes and thank you! Okay definitely gonna watch this. This is gonna be a blast. This will be my feel good show. Love You Teacher: Oooh it's the cuties from Perfect 10 Liners. I see the pros of watching this show now. "From the producer of 'Peaceful Property'" SIGN ME UP! Oh, amnesia trope. Solar is so cute. So he switches between being a kid and being an adult? Such a fun plot. I'm looking forward to this. Melody of Secrets: Oooh, another ForceBook show? The colouring is very interesting. Kinda dark and mysterious. Oh it is dark. I'm finally getting my dark ForceBook show? This is so exciting!! Oh, ghost hunting girl boss is also in this one? I love all my Peaceful Property related things. Will never say bye to my favourite show of 2024. This seems dark, mysterious and interesting. I'm definitely here for this kinda vibe. My Romance Scammer: Having romance in the title is not making it easy to get me lol. Oh, it's JuniorMark. This looks cheesy and lovey-dovey but for some reason it also looks interesting. Will keep this one in mind to give it a try. That Summer: Another main couple I don't know. Oh it's Mond and Neo here too. Is Neo in all the dramas? Love that. Who's that doctor with Mond? He's pretty. Guess I'm already here for this side ship.
Only Friends: Dream On: Okay here we go again. I'll rewatch this one. You know what's funny? Only Friends was my first drama and I didn't know a single soul. My friend was screaming at the end of the show when Mix appeared and I had no clue who he was. Fast forward to now and I know every single person in this season 2 and I'm so proud of myself haha. Granted I don't know Joss yet but I'm already excited for My Golden Blood so it feels like I already know him. EarthMix and OhmLeng, it's gonna be so spicy!! This is so messy. Even more than OF was and i can't wait for the even bigger mess when the show actually starts. Boston being back for this is the icing of the cake. He's gonna make this extra spicy and interesting. I can't wait. Ah, all the jealousy. We love her. MixLeng bitch fight I will look forward to this. I LOVE that the soundtrack is back. This makes this even more exciting! So is Gawin the Sand of this show because from the trailer it looks like he's the most sane one lmao. Only time will tell. Wonder how much trouble Boston is gonna cause this time. They already in trouble without him so we'll see.
Burnout Syndrome: Ooh is this gonna be OffGun. THOR MY MAN!! The black lipstick okay! That whole outfit is a vibe. Oh, it's the people from "Not Me" working on this. Obviously they would get OffGun but that also means it's gonna be good. And of course drawing is involved again. And by drawing I mean drawing people naked. Not gonna lie, I hate love triangles. They're my biggest enemy but I still think I'll give this a go 100%.
Head 2 Head: Once again don't know the characters but there's always room to learn more. I was like "oh nice car racing! but it went dark real quick." That vision thing is interesting. I'm intrigued.
Dare You to Death: Now this is a title I can go with. Oh it's Drake. Oh is this other guy the guy from Kidnap? The brother? I hate Truth or Dare. I never liked that game. Ooooh, JoongDunk police force? Now I like the sound of that. I like a good murder mystery. Also Joong is so ajdlskfjadsökghajdsöklfjasgf !!! Also that red shirt looks hella good on Dunk. Damn that is some dark ass shit I'm loving it. Finally something that is right up my ally.

Rewind Commentary: To Years Ahead
What a year, captain.
The Fair has been going for a lot longer than I ever though I'd be with it for, and yet, it's one of those moments where you don't think about how long something's been in your life until the rest of life starts moving faster. Like...a suitcase, a microwave, a particular book, the position of photographs on a wall. A set of draft sleeves. A pack you've never opened.
2024 is going to bring a lot more cards and lot more shakeup. The product lineup is as big as it's ever been and the cards we can make are as weird as they're ever going to get. Magic has a way of surprising us more than we can articulate until the cardboard hits the table. For the time being, though, we've got jobs to do, and that job right now is commentary.
When we go into the new year, there may be some upcoming changes to how commentary goes about. I've written a novel's worth of commentary this year alone, and we've reached a point where that's just not sustainable. We'll be talking more about this in January, but in the meantime, we do want to know: what alternate forms of commentary would be helpful for you all? The manpower that goes into writing is daunting, to say the least.
Let us know what you think. In the meantime, here's what I think about the cards this week:
~
@bergdg — Lekti, Naktamun Survivor

I don't know what to call this card past it being generally 'good.' It's a typally-relevant commander that fills a niche, and I do respect that. Jeskai pseudo-impulse is a good constructed archetype for sixty-card decks. Commander-wise? There's this inherent issue of every card having some kind of relevance or impact with no repeats. For variance, I get it, it can make for fun gameplay. Whether or not it feels good to lose one of two important cards makes it difficult to decide whether or not it's worth attacking.
But it's a fine blocker, too. There's a bit of a fun twist where you're rewarded for having both Bird/Phoenix cards AND having noncreature spells, so you can build off of the prowess or off of the fliers, your call. Which one would you pitch, though? I don't think that this is necessary the best benefit for either side centrally. Now if you want to have this as just a "good Jeskai card," then I can futz with it. As for whether or not is has a strictly strong identity in either direction, I'm not seeing that with this iteration.
~
@dabudder — The Darkin War

League of Legends, more like...reading the wiki was definitely helpful here. I have absolutely no history with this franchise or its lore. Deep, yes, absolutely, or at least expansive—impressively so. I think this is one instance where familiarity deepens the meaning far more significantly than it would be with just using guesswork or whatever, because that last chapter made no sense until I saw what the sealing process was for the, uh... I've been awake for 22 hours and forget a bunch of names, I'll admit.
What I like about the design is its clear commitment to commander-focused interaction. Two creatures fighting each other can be extremely powerful even at "sorcery speed," as it were. Even then, I'm not a huge fan of that transformation, not because it's not cool but because it's opening up a whole lot of weird doors. Counters, being permanent, can get messy when they remain on the swordified creatures. What about massive token/counter decks? Blinking? Tracking a board state can be easy on Arena, but definitely not on paper. Conditions that grant equipment cool abilities are nice, but I feel that the complexity you're asking for is more than needs to be handled.
~
@deg99 — Draugki, Immersturm Tyrant

I knew something was weird about this wording but I wasn't sure what. I think the problem is that you're trying to do a zillion things at once that grok but don't grok with wording. Rakshasa Vizier and Old Rutstein want to help. Each one kinda wants to be a separate trigger, and each one also kinda wants to be an "if this, then this" clause, and together... Eugh. "Whenever one or more cards are put into exile from a graveyard, if a creature card was put into..." No, because the "this way" or "that way" wouldn't necessarily work. I honestly don't know how to work with this one.
But, this second paragraph is being written several hours later, so I can say with confidence that I still don't know. Tired-me had something going on. "Whenever a spell or ability exiles one or more cards from graveyards" allows for "this way" to happen, which this card may or may not need to make all these abilities work. It's quite frustrating how well it groks versus the wording that would have to go into it. To be honest, having this be an end step trigger that looks at all the things that were exiled from a graveyard over the course of a turn might make it easier. If anything I truly want to convey how cool a card this is conceptually. I would have loved to have polished this in the workshop with you.
~
@dimestoretajic — Jeskai, The Way to the Eye

I had kinda forgotten that the clans were named after dragons. Were they? ... Okay, research into this reveals nothing so far, but that's how it is. Maybe the new ones were and the old ones kinda were, I have no idea. REGARDLESS. In terms of elder dragon lore, this is kind of a weird one. Even though I'm personally a fan of a big dragon teaching little humanoids martial arts in a teacherly manner, that doesn't feel exactly draconic to me, certainly not with the dragons of Tarkir. I'm not sold yet.
Mechanics are pretty great though. If there's a way to cheat spells, well, this card certainly does that. One free counterspell on each of your opponents' turns sounds amazing. Actually, that sounds awful to play against. Maybe "each of your turns" would be a little better. But the idea is solid! Let's talk about wording, though, and I wanna stress how much Oracle text helps to make these cards better for you. For the second line, you need "instant and sorcery SPELLS" instead of just "instants and sorceries." For the third, I believe it would be worded: "You may pay {0} rather than pay the mana cost for the first noncreature spell with mana value 4 or less you cast each turn." Wordier, but necessary.
~
@hypexion — Prism Shifter

Now this is a fun little evoke trick. Kind of. The thing is, like with Banishing Light and such effects, you'd have to know to stack the triggers in such a way so as to get the effect right and blink your target from the exhume trigger. That said, the "flashback for creature effects" feels like a sweet spot with unearth that you can do for cheaper, and this card in particular feels like a strong contender for versatility. (And, as was pointed out after I wrote this, a strong contender for making sure that you check your wording so this can't exile itself next time...)
The comparisons to unearth will be pretty stark, though—and the inability to attack would be a majorly divisive factor. But, this is still one card of however many, and I think that we're in a place that it's okay to have this kind of mechanic in a set as necessary and flavorful. I wonder where you imagined it and what kind of identity you see, because it's not really worded like Lorwyn's elementals usually are, and it implies color-crystal-y possibilities, and the mechanic itself is kinda macabre but not really... Actually that's another wonder. Why that name in particular for the mechanic? I suppose it makes the most sense. When it shares a name with another MTG card I can see where comparisons would be drawn but there really are only so many words that would fit. Maybe additional flavor exploration would yield a different result?
~
@i-am-the-one-who-wololoes — Unexpected Voyage

Oddly enough, this vibe feels a little unnaturally mean to me—for green, I mean. Green is the color of community, and this card specifically represents a group of...villagers (?) sneaking away from a village for an unknown reason, and maybe they're being chased, maybe they're vagrants and thieves, maybe they're just adventurers, but I don't know what the mood-to-card connection is. Perhaps "mean" isn't the right word that I'm looking for. It's simply off-putting; I don't have the full idea of what you're looking to convey.
What I do know is that the one thing this card could use would've been an off-color kicker. We have anti-search and searching-punishment effects, and those are primarily in black, adjacently in blue and white and kinda red, too. Green has nothing to do with one's ability to search a library by itself, and certainly not with an effect that also locks out things like Field of Ruin effects or whatever. Even if it was, why does the ability read for the next time and not that they just can't search this turn? I don't get this card flavorfully or mechanically; it's Rampant Growth with extra steps that's expecting me to meet it halfway and I don't know how.
~
@izzet-always-r-versus-u — Locked Room

So something tells me that you intended to do the whole Oblivion Ring trick here, oui? Sacrificing the room with the trigger on the stack and exiling something forever? Or perhaps that's unintentional... (For those of you not in the know, what you can do with this particular set of effects is something people used to do with Oblivion Ring, where you got rid of O-Ring with its exile trigger on the stack, and so it wasn't on the battlefield when the return trigger would've happened, leaving the Thing in perma-exile.) If that was intentional, then shame on you for the exploit—only because it doesn't grok well, though. The stack is, as I've found, a pain in the butt to explain to burgeoning players.
I suppose for the "return" contest it works fine; the "sacrifice" contest was supposed to be a wee bit weirder with it. I don't hate this card but it sure doesn't sit well with me for the exploit reason and that alone. Otherwise, hey, it's kinda awesome if you think about it from a twist on the Cinderella (Beauty and the Beast?) perspective. With a little nastier sending-away, perhaps. Limited is full of these effects and that's totally fine. The question is what could be done to avoid that exploit. Perhaps two different kinds of sacrifice triggers, one to leave permanently exiled, one to just draw? I'unno, there are lots of options.
~
@just--a--penguin — Karrthus, Essence of Jund

I'm gonna level with you, captain: if I'm sacrificing my dragons, I want a better effect than this at a cheaper cost. If I have to sacrifice three creatures each turn in order to get a big thing, then I want it worth my while. How many dragons do you think it would take for this to be not just a waste of dragons? Maybe underwhelming-ness aside, this card conceptually would be cool. Karrthus is an awesome character—for being a giant screaming flesh dragon, anyway. The fact that he's destroying other dragons is pretty rad for him.
Still, dragons are one of those things you want to keep around. Why would I sacrifice my other dragons if I could instead keep them around? What kind of deck does this card want to be run in? If you run it in a little-creature sacrifice deck that makes lots of sacrifices, you're going to want your dragons to support that, i.e. stick around. If you're running a deck with a lot of big dragons, you'd want them to be impactful beforehand and you probably aren't making that many sacrifices each turn. Y'feel me? This card is pulling in two directions and not quite meeting in the middle.
~
@nine-effing-hells — The Brothers Wittebane (JUDGE PICK)

Once more we step into the territory of thank-goodness-Abel-actually-knows-a-media-property. Y'all would be astounded by how much I don't know. Witches and Alex Hirsch, though? We're right on schedule. I think that this card as well makes perfect sense for the story that it's trying to tell, and I like the fact that, in line with some of the other sagas from Magic's past, it tells the story of a long-ago moment with real-time consequences. Yeah, I know that's what all sagas are supposed to do, but this one feels more apt considering how linearly the story goes and how directly it can be followed. I also just happen to know it better and it's based on a really straightforward section of a story.
It also follows that the simplicity has led to a card that's more or less fine, but not explosively spine-tingling. It's certainly useful and good for deadly-taxey kind of decks—remarkably so, in fact. Perhaps I'm underestimating this in the late-game stages, where you can boardwipe, play this, and your opponent's locked down for a turn while you're drawing removal spells and whatnot. Is this far better than I'm giving credit for? Perhaps! It's happened before. I've also faced down some really frustrating Doom Foretold decks, so, y'know, I've had my share of run-ins with this kind of build. But overall I like this card a lot and appreciate its existence! Kinda want to make double-sided human tokens now...
~
@railway-covidae — Nab

I had forgotten about this contest! I liked it a lot, from what I remember. I think. I know that I was the one running it because it's a weird one. Love what you've done with it, though, great use of an action piece. On terms of having a neat name, that's a success. If I recall, I wanted something that was a little different or out of color for the piece in question, but whatever, this card is still kinda cool.
I say "kinda" because the flavor implied is great and the card's execution could use a lot of work. You've got this part where you're stealing a small artifact (or artifact token!) but not giving it haste, which is still relevant in any format that has artifact tokens. It's so narrow that, at common, it would get passed around the draft pod without having any use beyond sideboarding—and even then I dunno what you'd really want it for. And there's no fun flavor text to boot! Still, the biggest question is: at common, what could this card do to make itself more playable or prominent? How can you keep the effect with the art but lose the baggage of that narrowness?
~
@reaperfromtheabyss — Maroon on the Reefs (JUDGE PICK)

I think this card is more blue than maroon, but whatever, that's just a theory—a color theory. Regardless, the only mechanical thing I would change is from "you don't control" to "your opponents control" in the vein of Bond of Discipline. The way this card can curve out allows for whatever blue 3-4 drops you got to swing on in, and if you're running a second color, you can have a little extra aggro for a turn to really close out games and/or find answers to the massive cards your opponents play. But maybe the Islands are key. Is this worth going primarily into the one color? I'd argue that the amount of stunning says yes for limited.
The Islands being a limiting factor is always going to hinder a card like this, but that's just what happens, really. These kinds of cards like the BRO uncommon cycle will always be a little iffy except in the late-late game. Flavorfully, I really think you could've condensed the flavor text to be more ominous. The "thankfully" there feels almost sardonic in an otherwise serious card, and I don't feel that it's necessary all things considered. The danger of the Hullscrape Labyrinth (which is a pretty awesome name) is what I want to focus on here. Pirates in danger, y'know? More a tale to scare the young sea-dogs.
~
@sparkyyoungupstart — Countdown to Destruction

Power Rangers, on the other hand, is something I haven't watched since I was probably five or six. Hoo boy. Thankfully, the wiki condensed this and the finale was available online. Your art direction being a little more abstract reminded my of the Doctor Who sagas, in a way, with the portrait of the episode being a bit more spread out. I do like how sagas look, which is fun for this card. I'm praising this part because there's a lot mechanically that I'm not quite meeting. As for whether or not this fits the show precisely, I'm not one to say; I think that you did the best you could with what was available, even if I don't get the menace part necessarily.
What we have here is an issue with the downsides. Giving all your opponents' creatures menace on turn five means that you'll be dead before you get to boardwipe unless your opponent is terribly far behind. The fact that you're also sacrificing one of your blockers on chapter II says a lot as well. If your opponent just wants to swing with what they have, hey, that works, and then they'll hold back until their stuff is more-or-less destroyed. The "survivors turn into humans" is fun flavorfully but really doesn't have meaning in any average game. The minimal amount of indestructibility makes this more confusing than intuitive. The long and short of it is that this card would be fun to think about but, in-game, it'll kill you right after the novelty wears off.
~
@squeezyboi — Gavi's Contingency (JUDGE PICK)

I really don't think this is as powerful as Fierce Guardianship. Thank goodness. I hate that card with a burning passion, except not really. This card's still ridiculously powerful if you have a hate-on-sight Voltron-y commander, but not so much that it's comparable to any other counterspell. Plus, it doesn't counter boardwipes and stuff. The fact that it's almost better than negate is still incredible, though, with the added Preordain for one generic more at instant speed. Should this cost 2UU for that? I honestly think it might, but that may be my Legacy brain kicking in.
I don't even think I need to talk about the flavor. It's so good! Ikoria is a complicated world and I wish we had stayed there for more than one set. So many of these worlds needed more than just one set. I'm eternally pissed at WotC for skipping around to these set-dressing one-and-done theme-of-the-week places, but I've said as much a zillion times before. Gavi is a pretty cool character from what I just read up on, and a mother's love is indeed conquering here. This is a moment where she gets to exert a little more power in a way that's heartwarming, to say the least. Commander cards don't get as much love in the story that much, but this one makes me feel a bit better about her, y'know? Good card, good direction, good feelings.
~
@wildcardgamez — Armont and the Beasts (JUDGE PICK)

Reading up on the lore behind Armont and the story involved, this is a really interesting card that passes for a lot more mechanically than it does story-wise, and yet the story doesn't entirely fall flat. Turning everything into monsters is one thing, but then they get more powerful, and then presumably Armont destroys the curse of the monster role. Right? But there's a zillion monster roles and only one destruction, so I guess that's THAT story... Heh. All semantics. Doesn't matter when you have something this strong.
I played an incredible amount of WOE. Trample was far more powerful than I thought it would be. The ability to have a Thrive-like effect, but perma-trample and also holy crap, Tanglespan Lookout—yeah, there's a lot going on. I think in the right shell this card can overwhelm your opponents easily. In many shells, it can overwhelm folks, because again, boost plus saga, pseudo-overrun, yadda yadda. I would've loved to have played with this card! Whether or not that kind of effect would be a bit much for the set is debatable. I'm glad that Auras were the theme above something like adventures for the archetype, though. Much more powerful.
See y'all on the flip, kids. @abelzumi

Thinking of You - July 🌛 2024 - Capricorn
Whole of their energy towards Capricorn: The Fool rev
So far every card out here is reversed, and they’re The Runaway so…not the healthiest relationship. Probably an ex. If you’re wondering if they’re coming back around, I don’t think so. They’re either too afraid to come around and apologize, knowing you’re gonna bite their head off; or they feel it’s foolish to even try, like this was just a failure. Move on, lesson learned - in their mind. When it comes to taking accountability, they do but also, they would never admit it or be forthcoming about it anyway. They never have. But do they know their role in things? I think so. More importantly, they know *you* know.
Feelings: Wheel of Fortune rev
They feel like they were going through something when they were with you, it was a bad cycle and a difficult time. They may have been non-committal from the start and missed their chance, or they may have played around and got burned. Whatever it is, they know the secret is out. 5 Swords at the bottom is the only upright card. If it’s switched, they’re forever pissed at you. If it’s them, they either know they were an asshole to you or they still are. Could be avoiding you because they think you’re ready to fight or bite their head off, that keeps repeating. Someone is smarmy and underhanded, either person.
Intentions: 2 Pentacles rev
They have no intention of doing anything about this, they already have enough going on they can barely handle. No communication, no efforts to cooperate with you, they’re focused on themselves and what they have to do to “keep their head above water” as I heard it.
Actions: 6 Wands rev & The Lovers rev
Failure, it’s over, they won’t do anything about this but move on with their life. It’s shown you’re waiting for nothing and it’s “delusional” to think otherwise. Whether that’s from them or Spirit idk. They see things for what they are, I’m guessing the damage is done and too far gone with whatever occurred between you. Like it’s not even a chance in their mind. When they think of you it’s more like reflecting on their fuck ups, they don’t actually consider trying to talk to you. If they were going through a bad cycle, I’m going to guess they probably still are…things feel chaotic with them.
Character Card: The Runaway
They be runnin’ 🏃🏻♀️ While they have done this to you, and you would see your own perspective on this dynamic, it’s not just you. You’re probably one of many different things they’ve been running from for who knows how long. The card describes someone privileged but like…in a cage. A gold cage. They break free from that cage and then don’t know wtf to do with themselves, that could be a pattern in their life. Not the most committed to things, or people, commitment could be a cage for them. Possible entitled rich kid syndrome. May also have spent time in jail or have a history with the law. Free, trapped, free, trapped, etc., it’s a cycle.
Messages:
- Other Half
- Superficial 💅🏽
Possible signs:
Leo, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Aries & Pisces
If you’re dealing with:
Justice shows you have a good head on your shoulders when it comes to people. You’re fair, balanced, and always seeking to do the right thing or come up with solutions that benefit everyone. You can cut someone off too, if they’re showing they’re not good for you or morally on board with decent or lawful behavior. You or others may be/feel justified in their decisions.
Aries - they’re over whatever happened that had them feeling ick - and are now moving forward in love, with you or otherwise
Taurus - mourning, sad, could be dealing with someone that’s sick or an ending of some kind
Gemini - heavily burdened or pressured by a house, neighborhood, or relationship, and avoiding the worst outcomes involving that by being proactive
Cancer - being stingy or closed off is a conscious decision, they know what they’re doing & it’s on purpose
Leo - applies practical effort every single day to maintain 10 Cups with you, they love you 🥰
Virgo - arguments or competition with this person, a gossiping shit disturber 💩
Libra - something is toxic here and it’s known, there’s no excuse or defense for it; whatever is “left” is returned to repeatedly
Scorpio - madly in love with you and ready to celebrate, you could marry this person 💍
Sagittarius - destined to have a wish come true, or you are their wish come true
Capricorn - done with flighty non-committal bs
Aquarius - likely biting your head off and setting boundaries for what they expect or will and won’t put up with, could be your boss/dad
Pisces - worried about money or a new job is stressing them out, literally everyone is getting this for Pisces this month

Higurashi Month 2024, Day 24: Astonished
Higurashi Month prompts archive: AO3
When Mion suggested the idea of magic tricks, everyone was on board.
When she specified learning magic tricks and not just watching her do them, because she'd seen this cool program on the hotel TV when Batcha had sent her with a few of the Kimiyoshi family on a business trip and she wanted to try, reactions immediately split.
"Nope," Keiichi said immediately, shaking his head. "Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh. No way are we-"
He pointed to Satoko.
"-giving that gremlin access to prestidigitation. Think of what she could do!"
"Presti-what?" Satoko said, her foxlike smirk momentarily stymied by bafflement.
"Sleight of hand," Shion clarified, and then pretended to stroke a nonexistent beard. "But you know, I'm kinda liking that idea."
"You just like it because she doesn't come after you!"
"Nobody's exempt from club strategies, Kei-chan. You're just the only one klutzy enough to keep tripping headfirst into them."
"Hey!"
"Will there be bunnies?" Rena asked, her eyes aglow, ignoring Shion and Keiichi behind her as they started to tussle.
"I ordered a magic set from the mail catalogue, but I dunno if we should work with live stuff yet," Mion admitted, lifting up her bento just before a flailing arm swiped under it. "There's plenty of critters around if we wanna try –I'm pretty sure one of my aunts has a rabbit hutch, too."
"And none of us have a top hat, mew," Rika said cheerfully.
"Ah, that's easy to get." Mion waved one hand. "You remember my uncle in Okinomiya, the one with the game store? He's got a load of old costumes and things in his basement."
"So how come you didn't buy a magic set from him?" Satoko asked, eyes on the whirling cloud of dust that had overtaken the two desks as the occasional yelp or shout echoed out of it.
"Didn't have the right kind of set," Mion said. "I wanted something comprehensive, y'know? Ropes and rings and a deck and an instruction pamphlet with pictures and all that. The pamphlet part was the trickiest, since most are in English."
"It'll be odd having a set of new cards," Hanyuu mused.
"We'll just use 'em for magic, don't worry," Mion replied, although her grin went a trifle sharp-edged for a moment. "We wouldn't want to mess things up, would we, Kei-chan?"
"What?" he said as the scuffle suddenly paused, Shion's arm wrapped around his neck in a headlock and his hand frozen in the act of pulling on a chunk of her hair.
"We're getting a new deck with the magic set and Mi-chan promised not to mix the two together," Rena repeated happily. He snorted.
"Yeah, because she doesn't want me to trick her again –urk!"
He gurgled as Shion flexed her elbow, cutting off his air supply. Keiichi yanked on her hair, but it was long enough that she could merely dip her head with the movement and go with him to the edge of his range.
"Should we make it a competition to see who masters all the tricks the fastest?" Satoko suggested, an evil gleam back in her eye as she began to grin.
"Mm." Mion hummed noncommittally. "I dunno… that doesn't sound very inspired. Maybe whoever can do the coolest performance with the tricks? Extra points for however many you include?"
"We could do a magic show!" Shion gushed, eyes sparkling at the idea as Keiichi, purple-faced and foaming at the mouth, tapped rapidly at her arm with both hands.
"Shi, I think you need to let go," Rika noted, and with a blink –as if forgetting she had him stashed there– Shion looked down, and then opened her arm.
Keiichi smacked down to the floor and wheezed on all fours, his breath rattling throughout the room as he drew in deep gulping lungfuls of breath.
"I'm… the Magician of the Mouth!" he said weakly after a few moments, setting a hand on his knee and pushing himself to his feet. He swayed a little, but stuck a finger in the air, declaiming proudly. "I came from Tokyo! I know about physics! There's no way you guys'll be able to beat me!"
"Them's sleighting words," Mion replied as her eyes lit with the spark of challenge, rubbing her hands with a grin. "Sleight of hand, that is. Eh?"
"Mion Sonozaki, disqualified for use of lame puns," Shion pretended to note down in an invisible book, even going so far as to mime the act of scribbling with her retrieved chopstick before her sister smacked her hands.
"Bring it on!" Satoko scoffed, tossing her head and folding her arms. "With my trap expertise, I'll master those tricks in a snap."
"While Satoko does traps and tricks, I'll do my best with the treats," Rika said sweetly.
"Learning magic tricks does sound fun…" Hanyuu admitted.
"For the bunny rabbits and fluffy pigeons!" Rena cried, raising her hand as though calling an army forth to battle. Shion snorted and lifted an arm to join her.
"For prestidigitation!" she added, grinning at Keiichi.
"Alright!" Mion laughed, and punched the air as Rika, Satoko, and Hanyuu belatedly –and in Keiichi's case, reluctantly- followed. "For traps, for treats, for fluffy bunnies, and for learning all the amazing tricks that will astonish and delight our eyes! The Hinamizawa Club's Magic Academy is now open for showbusiness!"

Hi, it's me. Here's an introduction to my story and motivation for my health journey. I hope you join me as I navigate adulthood, my wellness, and chronic illness.
Where to begin? Firstly, welcome. I suck at explaining myself so please hear me out. I am a 19-year-old girl from North America who has, for a year now, been suffering from a mysterious illness. For a year now, I have dealt with absolute hell, unable to regain control of my life. My life consists of nausea and vomiting, headaches and fatigue, and just a hell lot of mental issues. This goes without saying: the daily mental fog. I want to gain control of my health and life narrative. Anyone dealing with chronic health issues probably understands the constant patronizing and dismissal. Some people assume it isn't that bad, and some people assume I'm faking it. Most importantly, they probably understand the loss of self-identity. Your illness becomes you. What you like, dislike, hobbies, and traits are masked by symptoms and accommodations. I have had my true self ripped away from me, and the worst part is, I have no one to blame. I want to change, though. I want to feel and be healthier. My life is stuck at the moment. I keep seeing others reach the goals I had set for myself, and I want to change. My goal with this vlog is to have a diary, an outlet for how I feel while I document my health journey and my journey into regaining control of myself.
Maybe we should start at the beginning. I wasn't always a bitter, depressed puke machine, believe it or not, this used to not be my life at all. I used to be very healthy and full of energy. Something changed at one point, and to this day, I spend hours overanalyzing what and where everything went wrong. I don't even understand the timeline. All I know is that on Christmas morning 2023, I woke up with the flu and nausea, and ever since then, I have never been the same. To go from exploring the world to being terrified of violently throwing up in front of strangers daily is a big jump. I've tried to get help before, but American medicine was just not doing it. Not that it wasn't working, just that my doctors did little to nothing to get something working. Seriously, once a month I would go into an appointment and be told essentially "that's so weird and not normal... good luck though! Same time next month?" I'm ashamed to admit I did show up same time the very next month. In December 2024, my Mom was overhearing me puke my guts out every day and encouraged me to leave the country to get another opinion from another healthcare system. My mom and I traveled to another country, and the ride there destroyed me. Remember the mental fog I mentioned earlier? Yeah, so my memory isn't spot on, but from what I can remember, the ride was not fun. It was a 4-hour drive to the airport, 3 3-hour plane ride, and then a 2-hour drive from the airport to the place we were staying. The drive to the airport went well until the final 30 minutes. I started to feel sick. Arrived at the airport, threw up (so embarrassing), and prepared for security and boarding. I got fruit snacks and Gatorade at the airport, which I could barely hold down. Once we got on the plane, I found out my assigned seat was an aisle seat right next to two strangers. I felt nauseous the entire plane ride, and even got up to throw up a couple of times. I felt so judged every time I went to throw up until I saw all the flight attendants playing a card game while eating chips and taking shots of Fireball. It was weirdly comforting. I landed, threw up at the airport once more before going through immigration. The cab ride was my real introduction to hell. No, seriously, for a second, I considered the possibility that I had died and this cab ride was my hell. To set the scene, it was hot and I was sweating, I had a migraine, and of course, an insane amount of nausea. This is where the mental fog comes into play. I cannot remember if I fell asleep or what happened, but all I know is one second I was sitting up and the next I was lying my head down, just waking up. I might've fainted, but the truth is I can't remember, and even if I did, I was glad I fainted, took off an hour from the drive. As soon as we got to our destination, I jumped out of the cab and immediately went to bed. Those following 3 days weren't as bad. I didn't eat because I was scared of throwing up, but I wasn't hungry either. Long story short, I went to the doctor, where he didn't diagnose me with anything specifically, but he did explain to me what was happening. He explained that because I often fasted for long hours, the acid in my stomach didn't know what to do with food, so it would send it back up. Mix in the daily vomiting, and my stomach became irritated and developed a hernia. He gave me a couple IVs, a ton of meds, and those next two weeks of vacation were bliss. I ate whatever I wanted and felt great. Fast forward, it's been 5 months, and I mostly still feel well. The first two months, I stopped feeling nauseous, but by month 4, I began feeling nauseous here and there. I would throw up here and there, too. The nausea is subtly coming back, I'm unsure why. And with $60 in my bank account, I can't exactly leave the country again. This time, I refuse to let it get bad again. It's going to be a journey, but I am ready for it.

Regular revision is key to retaining concepts and performing well in the exam. Mock tests and practice papers are invaluable resources that help familiarize students with the exam format, allowing them to improve their time management skills. These resources also help in identifying areas where additional focus is needed. ICAI provides study materials, mock tests, and question papers that students should utilize to strengthen their preparation.
In addition to traditional study methods, students can benefit from peer discussions and online resources like tutorials and video lectures. These resources can offer new perspectives on complex topics and help clear doubts. For students who find certain areas challenging, it is recommended to join coaching classes or study groups to gain better understanding and guidance.
Time Management and Stress Management
As the CA Foundation Exam Dates Jan 2025 draw nearer, managing stress becomes equally important. Exam preparation can be overwhelming, and students may experience anxiety as the exam day approaches. It is important to maintain a healthy balance between study and rest. Students should ensure they take regular breaks during study sessions to avoid burnout and stay fresh. Physical exercise, meditation, and maintaining a healthy diet can also play a significant role in reducing stress and improving concentration.
Effective time management during the exam is another crucial factor. The CA Foundation exam includes both objective and subjective questions, and students need to manage their time wisely to complete the exam within the allotted time. Practicing time-bound mock tests can help students develop this skill and increase their chances of success.
Conclusion
The CA Foundation Exam Dates Jan 2025 are an important milestone for students aspiring to become Chartered Accountants. By understanding the exam schedule, following the registration process carefully, and implementing an effective study plan, students can maximize their chances of success. Preparation for the exam requires discipline, consistency, and focus, as well as effective time and stress management strategies. With dedication and the right approach, students can approach the CA Foundation exam with confidence and take the first step toward a successful career in accountancy.

Iride the bus in Washington, D.C. often enough to know that I am cheating myself by paying. Every time it’s the same ordeal. When the bus rolls up to the stop—usually a few minutes late—I pull out my wallet and get ready to swipe my card. But it’s never so simple: Sometimes the machine is broken. Other times my card is defective and the machine won’t take cash. But most often, the driver, already harried by other more pressing worries at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, simply doesn’t have time for some guy attempting to pay for his ride—and lurches on, leaving me to figure it out in medias res or give up.
Most people give up, or don’t even bother to try. I am in a distinct minority of paying bus users in the nation’s capital. In the last few years, fare evasion on D.C. buses has become one of the great unsung failures of city governance. Even as Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration has largely solved the same problem on the trains—after Metro authorities erected unhoppable gates at nearly every station turnstile, fare evasion dropped to 3 percent—the bus has only gotten worse. And few people in the city seem to have the will or the imagination to do anything about it.
In WMATA’s telling, bus fare evasion has “steadily increased” in the past few years. That’s a modest way of phrasing the problem. But here are the numbers. In 2019, fare evasion was estimated to be at about 14 percent. In 2020, it rose to 17 percent. Then came those unregulated few years wherein officials waved their hands vaguely at the pandemic as fare evasion skyrocketed. Here’s where things stand in 2024: “a very high rate,” a Metro board member admitted last week, “approaching 70 percent.”

Kpop Dream Log 67: with Beomgyu

August 6, 2024, Tuesday
I was at a party sitting on a couch when I look up and see a TXT member. He is tall, and thin, has on a light grey almost white muscle-t that is very loose on him and he has a pair of white-washed light blue jeans that are super baggy. They reminded me of the pants skaters wore back in the 90’s. His hair was yellow but with a tint of orange. He was on his phone, holding it with both hands as he typed.
To my left were two young girls, maybe in their late teens. One had straight black hair while the other had long brown curly hair. They looked Hispanic. They were giggling and daring each other to go up to him.
He looks down at me and asks me something and soon we start a conversation. The black haired girl finally comes up to him talking about how she’s a huge fan and wanted a picture and autograph.
“No picture,” he tells her, but he accepts the photo cards from the girls and signs them. “I’m sorry. I’m busy,” he admits with a quick smile.
The girls scamper to the other side of the room and he returns his attention to me. I can see them out of the corner of my eye scowling at me in jealousy.
Though I don't remember much of our conversation, I vividly remember asking him, “Tae-hyun. That’s how to say it? Not Tae-hyoon, right?” He looks taken aback and instantly his mood darkens. Trying to smooth over the moment, I add, “I only ask because I always like to make sure I pronounce people's names correctly.”
He stares at me blankly and I apologize.
“It’s Taehyun,” he deadpans and then returns to his phone.
(That part made me laugh when I woke up. The reason this part is funny to me is because now that I’m awake I know it’s Beomgyu I'm talking too and not Taehyun. I don’t know if I was just curious on the proper pronunciation of one of his members' names or if I actually thought he was Taehyun in the dream.)
Anyway, he ends up crouching and leaning over the armrest of the couch I was sitting on.
“Do you want to come hang out with me at my room tonight?”
He asks it quietly and I try not to look down at his hand because the backs of his fingers were inconspicuously brushing back and forth over my own hand leaving me not having to guess as to what type of hanging out he wanted to do.
I panic and reply before I even know what I’m saying.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”
“Ok. I get it.”
He stands up and I do the same. I go to my sister and tell her what happened and she tells me I better go back to him and say yea. I argue back that I just got divorced and it just doesn't seem right.
“So," she counters. "What better way to celebrate than with one of your Kpop people? Go back and say yes!”
“Ok," I relent.
I breathe out nervously and head back to Beomgyu.
“Hey.” He looks down at me and waits for me to continue speaking. “If you were serious, about me coming over…then I’d actually like to accept.”
He smiles brightly and nods. “Yeah. Yes!” His hair is long and silky and when he nods the lights shine off of it at how sleek and silky it is. “Come on.”
As he hooks his elbow with mine to walk me outside, I wake up.
