how c.ai works and why it's unethical
Okay, since the AI discourse is happening again, I want to make this very clear, because a few weeks ago I had to explain to a (well meaning) person in the community how AI works. I'm going to be addressing people who are maybe younger or aren't familiar with the latest type of "AI", not people who purposely devalue the work of creatives and/or are shills.
The name "Artificial Intelligence" is a bit misleading when it comes to things like AI chatbots. When you think of AI, you think of a robot, and you might think that by making a chatbot you're simply programming a robot to talk about something you want them to talk about, and it's similar to an rp partner. But with current technology, that's not how AI works. For a breakdown on how AI is programmed, CGP grey made a great video about this several years ago (he updated the title and thumbnail recently)
youtube
I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you watch this because CGP Grey is good at explaining, but the tl;dr for this post is this: bots are made with a metric shit-ton of data. In C.AI's case, the data is writing. Stolen writing, usually scraped fanfiction.
How do we know chatbots are stealing from fanfiction writers? It knows what omegaverse is [SOURCE] (it's a Wired article, put it in incognito mode if it won't let you read it), and when a Reddit user asked a chatbot to write a story about "Steve", it automatically wrote about characters named "Bucky" and "Tony" [SOURCE].
I also said this in the tags of a previous reblog, but when you're talking to C.AI bots, it's also taking your writing and using it in its algorithm: which seems fine until you realize 1. They're using your work uncredited 2. It's not staying private, they're using your work to make their service better, a service they're trying to make money off of.
"But Bucca," you might say. "Human writers work like that too. We read books and other fanfictions and that's how we come up with material for roleplay or fanfiction."
Well, what's the difference between plagiarism and original writing? The answer is that plagiarism is taking what someone else has made and simply editing it or mixing it up to look original. You didn't do any thinking yourself. C.AI doesn't "think" because it's not a brain, it takes all the fanfiction it was taught on, mixes it up with whatever topic you've given it, and generates a response like in old-timey mysteries where somebody cuts a bunch of letters out of magazines and pastes them together to write a letter.
(And might I remind you, people can't monetize their fanfiction the way C.AI is trying to monetize itself. Authors are very lax about fanfiction nowadays: we've come a long way since the Anne Rice days of terror. But this issue is cropping back up again with BookTok complaining that they can't pay someone else for bound copies of fanfiction. Don't do that either.)
Bottom line, here are the problems with using things like C.AI:
It is using material it doesn't have permission to use and doesn't credit anybody. Not only is it ethically wrong, but AI is already beginning to contend with copyright issues.
C.AI sucks at its job anyway. It's not good at basic story structure like building tension, and can't even remember things you've told it. I've also seen many instances of bots saying triggering or disgusting things that deeply upset the user. You don't get that with properly trigger tagged fanworks.
Your work and your time put into the app can be taken away from you at any moment and used to make money for someone else. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who use AI panic about accidentally deleting a bot that they spent hours conversing with. Your time and effort is so much more stable and well-preserved if you wrote a fanfiction or roleplayed with someone and saved the chatlogs. The company that owns and runs C.AI can not only use whatever you've written as they see fit, they can take your shit away on a whim, either on purpose or by accident due to the nature of the Internet.
DON'T USE C.AI, OR AT THE VERY BARE MINIMUM DO NOT DO THE AI'S WORK FOR IT BY STEALING OTHER PEOPLES' WORK TO PUT INTO IT. Writing fanfiction is a communal labor of love. We share it with each other for free for the love of the original work and ideas we share. Not only can AI not replicate this, but it shouldn't.
(also, this goes without saying, but this entire post also applies to ai art)

to a dying? atinyblr
i don't usually speak about these things, but a lot of blogs (amazing writers) are leaving this platform or taking time off bc of lack of engagement which serves as a big demotivating factor. especially and specifically in this atiny fandom, some things have come to my attention and i just want all readers and writers to take a look at this post and refresh some reading and writing etiquettes, as well as revive the essence of being a part of this fandom.
feedback:
i understand that there are a lot of silent readers on here, but since tumblr is dying and our fandom is not very huge, the least you can do to show the writers some support is like the post.
which brings me to the point that the like function didn't even exist in the past. this site still runs on reblogs. as readers, to show your favourite writers some semblance of support, you should be reblogging with tags. a simple ‘#ateez x reader’ or ‘#ateez fics’ is enough. it's literally not asking for much– reblogs are the only way writers can get reach.
if you cannot do that bc of your blog's aesthetic or whatever, side blogs exist. if you still cannot do that, a simple anon ask appreciating the writer sometimes saves them.
also, what has happened to the quality of reblogs? readers consume years of writers’ work and efforts in mere hours and don’t even leave any feedback? art in general in all forms is very underappreciated and with all sorts of problems like plagiarism, ai writing and everything, true art and writing is dying and needs to be appreciated now more than ever. we’re literally the last generation witnessing ai take over in all fields of arts. appreciate content creators before it’s too late, don’t be a content glutton!
updates and requests:
asking writers for updates when they specifically mention that they would prefer posting at their pace is wrong for so many reasons– we all have a real life. you, the reader, do too. just like you don't always have time to read, writers don't always have time to write. do you ever see the writers asking their readers 'why have you not read my latest chapter?'
most of the times, writers mention in their bio/faq post or elsewhere that they do mind being asked about updates. respect your writers, please, and do a little scroll before you send such demanding asks (also, sugarcoating when asking for updates does not make it any better!)
if you are only asking about updates, it demotivates a lot of writers bc these same people will disappear when it is time for feedback. writing is a form of art. we can write, artists can paint, musicians can compose music, but all of it has no meaning unless it is shared with an audience and appreciated. readers are just as important as the writers but there is no way of knowing fics are valued unless feedback is given.
the same goes for requests. you can only send a request when the requests are open, which is usually mentioned in the writer’s bio/faq post. it’s literally not that hard to check if requests are open and it’s basic decency to not send a request when the writers specifically mention that requests are closed. when sending a request, please be courteous. a ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ are examples of being courteous when sending requests.
the fanfics in atinyblr:
i understand that you can read whatever you like, but why is it that in the atiny fandom, fics that do not contain smut hardly ever get attention? as a writer, i enjoy writing and reading smut, and while i am not specifically a smut blog, i have noticed how fics containing smut get far more reach than fics that do not contain smut– not just in my case, but other amazing writers as well.
there are such amazing fictions in this fandom. all fics are crafted with dedication and care, yet stories without smut often get sidelined. writers are not able to express themselves in their writing freely anymore and they simply conform to a genre they know readers will consume, as they are forced to consider adding smut to their stories so they can get more reach in this fandom. i have heard accounts from a lot of writers who were inclined to add smut to an otherwise smut-free fic just for reach.
this is by no means hate to the smut writers. i am also not placing blame on them. smut drabbles have always been in this fandom, and there are amazing smut writers out there, doing their thing. it is the readers here who are failing the writers. readers are quick to talk about the lack of ‘good fics’ or ‘plot’ yet will not even bother searching for these works. there used to be a good balance and appreciation for all genres alike.
i know that smut is what's hot and trendy these days, and drabbles in general, no matter the genre, are easier to read when you want to take a short break. but there is such a lack of longfics in this fandom, especially as of lately, and as someone who has personally witnessed the ratio of longfics decrease exponentially, i felt the need to point this out. appreciate all writers! appreciate all genres! longfic writers need as much validation and encouragement as drabble writers, and vice versa! don't be too harsh on longfic writers for not pumping out fics at the same speed as shortfic writers.
and on that note, smut drabble writers experience a lack of quality feedback despite the high engagement, so readers, please don't hesitate to point out exactly what you liked about a fic, even if it's a short drabble! be kind to those writers, give them time to write and be kind when sending requests! they may post more often but they, too, have a life.
tags:
this is specifically for the people who will post a very normal picture of a member, no caption, but tag it something like #ateez smut, #ateez hard hours, #ateez x reader. and for the people who tag their asks with irrelevant tags– literally learn to tag your post properly, and stop crowding the wrong tags. you're just proving the point that if you don't tag a post with the smut tag or something similar, it won't get reach. if you've posted with a caption, that makes sense (though it still doesn't warrant some of the tags being used there).
as for writers, also learn to use your tags appropriately. fics that do not contain smut should not be tagged with smut related tags. believe in yourself. i get that there is the problem of reach but do not overcrowd tags with irrelevant material.
disclaimer:
this is by no means about me. if i cared about the notes, or lack thereof, i would have stopped writing a while ago. while it is challenging to be a writer here, especially as of lately, i still enjoy posting whatever i write no matter the genre or the word count. but it's a bit disappointing that my planned out fics get much less attention than a simple smut headcanons post that i wrote in the heat of the moment with my friend in literally a few hours as a joke (which has reached almost 10k notes btw in a span of 2 years). sure, it has exposed my blog to new readers but that's about it.
this post is for all the amazing writers who have left, are thinking of leaving, or are struggling to voice these problems because they are afraid of being marked as 'problematic' or a 'hater' or something worse. i am not afraid to voice my opinion on here, and if you think that i am wrong, feel free to interact with this post and correct me because i am not claiming that i am right about this.
these are just the observations i have made as someone who has been actively writing on this platform for about 4 years now, and since i have a decent number of followers, i hope this post gets more reach. do not be afraid to reblog this if you agree, and even if you do not, reblog this so someone else gets educated. i may have missed some points so feel free to add if you want too.
#sorry for the title i have to grab y'alls attention somehow#it did not always use to be like this!#be kind to writers!#our fandom here is not that big so let's support each other#and revive the essence of what fanfic is truly about#art#and art needs what??#appreciation!!#ateez#atinyblr#atiny#ateez x reader#ateez fanfic#ateez fics

Hello, I recently read your post about Ai and I wanted to know your opinion on this
My brother likes reading and writing, its something he always loved
But sometimes when he is tired and does not have the energy to write a new story from 0 or find a new story to read he likes to write a story prompt (short or small depending of his inspiration) and use a AI to generate a story for him to read
He never posted any of the AI stories and he always deletes them after reading
So, is it wrong to use it if no one ever knows?
I think your brother should consider what he actually likes about reading and writing, or if he actually likes them at all, because he's doing himself a huge disservice by engaging with AI-generated content.
The "wrongness" about using AI isn't that other people know you're doing it, it's about the way it absolutely flattens the human experience and art into something non-human and without soul or passion to it, the fact that it plagiarises both written and visual work that many people have put blood sweat and tears into, and perhaps most crucially, it's about its unbelievably harmful effects on the environment.
If you're "too tired" to write a story, then sorry to break it to you, but you simply do not want to write the story. I can empathise with the frustration of writer's block because I often very badly want to write but I'm busy, or I don't have any ideas, or I'm not in the right headspace, or whatever. But at the end of the day, I want to write a story because I'm a writer, and I enjoy writing. If I ask the AI to write the story for me, then I've not written the story.
So what is the point of that? Would you ask an AI to eat your favourite food for you? Would you ask it to go on holidays for you?
If you enjoy reading, what is the point of reading something that wasn't even written by a person? Stories are built of people's experiences and imaginations and emotions and all of the complexities of being human, and an AI can't recreate any of that. It's empty, it's antithetical to every part of what creating art means, and the less people engage with art, the more we lose of ourselves and our ability to build connections with one another and the world we share.

You know how all of these companies are cutting staff and letting AI do a lot of the work? Well, it doesn't exactly pan out, like, ever.
I, for one, keep getting texts from an "AI assistant" where I get my car serviced about an upcoming appointment I never made. And when it asks if it should connect me with a service person to deal with the issue, I point out it's an issue the goddamn AI created, so it can fix it its motherfucking self. It's a fun little dance we do about once a week.
Anywho, the venerated Chicago Sun-Times published an insert with an article on summer reading suggestions. This article was created using AI and many of the books suggested simply don't exist.
*sad trombone noise*
Some will argue that this was for a seasonal insert and not exactly officially part of the actual paper. In fact, the Chicago Sun-Times did just that...

But, see up there at the top of the page?...

...Sure makes it look like an exactly official part of the actual paper.
And sure, this could be just a harmless and embarrassing lesson for the self-proclaimed "Hardest Working Paper in America" (and the other papers that picked up the article and also ran it — oops!), but it does speak to a much larger, much more serious, much more complicated problem.
A huge swath of the country simply don't trust the news anymore. It's a problem that has many sources, a few of which are:
The Trump administration's repeated use of the phrase "fake news" whenever there's a hard question or critical article
The very fucked up fact that billionaires own most of the news outlets in the country and are killing stories about Trump as they line up to suck his deformed little knob
The sad truth that these outlets are more and more turning to AI for some of the heavy lifting, a tool that has been proved easily manipulated and horribly flawed again and again and again
Why should you care?
I've said this before and I'll say it again: Journalism Saves Democracy.
Journalism is the only profession mentioned in the U.S. Constitution for a reason. It's supposed to keep power in check and inform the public. That's why people call it the Fourth Estate.
Now, one silly reading list won't topple journalism. But, it's one more mistake, one more small reason to be dubious of the Chicago Sun-Times, and one more thing that supports "fake news" claims — all because some rich guy decided to save some money by firing staff and handed the keys over to AI.
And it comes at a time when we've never needed the Fourth Estate more.

Clarification because i think it's been misunderstood:
The way i use it is if i'm stuck on research i ask it to find me sources which i then check, i don't just ask it a question and take whatever answer it gives me. The research project i was talking about was about a very specific topic and i previously spent hours trying to get google to give me any useful results because all it gave me were articles about broader semi-related topics. And the introduction i had it write me was literally just for the sake of having something on the page that made sense, i completely re-wrote it afterwards.
As for writing, i don't ask it for plot points or anything, i have those completely planned out. I just have a tendency to get stuck, especially when it comes to going from one plot point to another and it genuinely helps to just ask like "how could i transition from this scene to that major thing that has to happen" and have it spit out some general ideas on how to lead into it.
Because in my opinion the problem isn't using AI, the problem is NOT using critical thinking. Yeah it's unreliable as a source. So are friends. It definitely gives you some ideas that are just stupid. Guess what, so do my friends and even other writers. Which is why when you ask other people, you think their answers through and check the information they give you. Same principles apply here.
Believe it or not, a dumb computer CAN have good ideas and give good critiques, it's just that you have to treat it the same way you'd treat, say, your 15-year-old nephew who isn't a writer but is currently the only person you can ask for ideas. And having it analyse your characters is quite simply fun and for me it also worked quite well to get my brain back onto the story after months of not writing.
(Side note, i wouldn't recommend the standard ChatGPT for any of this, that one really does just suck. There's one specifically for creative writing that's miles better)
--
Some people talk to the action figures stuck to their monitor with much the same unsticking results, yeah.
Google has been getting worse and worse in recent years. It's definitely not the best way to find journal articles, though IDK what kind of articles you were after.

"I Just Use AI To Generate Ideas"
When writers discuss generative AI, one of the responses we often hear is, "I would never have ChatGPT write my story for me. That's cheating! I just use it to generate ideas."
Sure, if you use AI to generate a writing prompt or a plot twist, you're still writing the story, or most of it. You're doing the bulk of the work. But you're avoiding practicing one of the most valuable skills a writer can have: creativity.
Good writers are invariably good readers. The more you read, the more stories you take in, the more these plots, twists, characters, dialogue, and other bits and pieces will take up residence in your head. They will be there for you to draw upon. When you need a story idea, you can take all this inspiration, shuffle it like a deck of cards, and deal out something entirely new.
Think about Star Wars. The original trilogy is a remix of Akira Kurosawa films, Flash Gordon, World War II dogfights, Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and many, many other elements. Imagine if George Lucas had been addicted to ChatGPT instead. This was the 1970s, so it probably would have been a cabinet in an arcade. If he had simply inserted a quarter asked an idea machine to be creative for him, we never would have gotten the Star Wars we have today. It would have been a rehash of old Buck Rogers, nothing more.
Learning to draw inspiration from a wide variety of sources and recombine it into something new is what creativity is all about. When you ask a machine to do that for you, you never learn that skill. Whatever creativity you do have atrophies. The next time you try to create on your own, it gets even harder, and you feel even more dependent on AI.
At this point, you might object and say, "What's the difference between asking ChatGPT for a writing prompt and reading a human-written prompt? Didn't you write a whole collection of story ideas? Doesn't using your prompts make people's brains atrophy?"
When I create writing prompts, my hope is that people won't just pick one and use it as-is. My hope is that people will combine them with their own ideas, or with other prompts. People can browse my whole collection of prompts and mix and match. If you take a hero from one, a monster from another, and a sci-fi gadget from a third, you're doing the same creative remixing process that people like Lucas do. It's a shortcut in that you're not reading a dozen books to get these ideas, but you're still exercising your creative muscles.
The process of making art should teach you something. You should always be sharpening your skills, and learning new ones. If you ask a machine to do the hard parts for you, the hard parts will never get easier. Putting in the work is how you grow, and how good art becomes brilliant.

Greetings, Player.
Hello and welcome to the Official Overlords Of Arlastio Tumblr page.
What are we?
Overlords of Arlastio is currently an In-Development Roblox game focused around adventure, stories and fun, fast-paced combat, with similar mechanics to games like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves, with tons of end-game content such as minigames, tournaments, events, boss rushes, battle platformer, and plenty of PvP, as well as character customization and building options for more casual players.
Meet our main developers!
Lorelei - The main writer and original concept creator of Overlords of Arlastio, character creator, world builder
Star - Co-developer, character creator, world-builder
Chikara - Co-developer, character creator
This game is currently an In-development concept, that we all want to make into a real game, however, the three of us are beginner developers. If you are interested in assisting the game's development, please join our discord server, or contact us via [email protected].
Who do we need?
We are currently looking for the following: Coders, Animators(2d and 3d), Artists, Asset creators, soundtrack/music creators, voice actors and world builders. You can apply for these jobs on the discord server or through our email as well.
To apply, state the following: What roles you would like to have, state prior experience/knowledge in the role, How much you would like to be paid(optional), and provide an example of your work.
Payments?
If you wish to help, but would also like to recive payment for your hard work, we will be willing to pay in robux, and only robux, as for many, many reasons, we cannot pay in actual money.
You are free to name your price for your work, however, do keep in mind that we are very limited due to very low funds, we are currently working to obtain the robux necessary to make sure everyone can be paid the amount they deserve.
However, you are not required to request payment if you are simply looking for a fun, fulfilling project. Robux payments will not be distributed until work is assigned.
Schedule?
We are very flexible with schedules, as we ourselves, in honesty, are very procrastinative individuals, and also have very busy schedules of our own that many times interfere with developmental progress of the game. (Trust us, the game's been a concept since 2024 now, and we're only just now making a Tumblr page.) If you need a break, you may take a break for as long as you need, as we understand burnouts do happen.
What do we aim for with this game?
We bring Overlords of Arlastio to you with the promise of: - A very diverse cast of characters, including THROUGHLY RESEARCHED cultures, races, and LGBTQ+ characters - The ability to pet any animals you come across on your journey - Many unique and charming characters to aid you on the battlefield - Engaging story filled with twists and turns, written by a human, for humans.
You want to become a developer/helper? Let's set some rules.
The usage of generative AI is strictly forbidden. We as the creators of Overlords of Arlastio give our full support to the skilled and talented individuals who have put all their time and effort towards their art and creations. We welcome artists of all capabilities and mediums.
If you are accepted to become one of our staff, we kindly ask that you please not leak any content that is still under development to the public. We wish to keep things surprising and engaging for our future players.
Thank you for taking the time to read our introduction. This game is a very large and expansive dream, and we can all achieve it together. - Lorelei.

Many artists are wary of AI. I've been using Chat Gpt and come to the realization that with my kids, school and other life obligations I need to use AI in my writing process. No, I'm NOT using the AI's writing or passing it on as mine. It's for plotting, character arcs and to help me get over writers block. I'm conflicted. I just don't have the time to write that I wish I did. :( if I use AI am I not a real writer?
Using AI as a Writer
I want to preface this by saying that we are quite literally in the Wild West when it comes to AI and how it fits into the creative world. The technology is still evolving. The legalities of use are still evolving. Public sentiment and codes of ethics are still evolving... the only definitive answer I can give on the topic of using AI in writing is that you should never use it to write all or part of your story.
Using AI as a tool to help you think through plot problems, flesh out character arcs, and move past story road blocks in and of itself is something many writers and writer organizations have embraced. You're still doing the actual writing, plotting, character arc design, etc. yourself.
However, if you're using AI to generate your entire plot, characters, character arc, etc., it gets into a bit of a gray area for me. Yes, you're still doing the actual writing, but are you a landscape painter if you only do paint by number? I'm not sure. Yes, you're technically moving the brush and making the strokes, but your brain didn't imagine the imagery and your skills didn't know what colors to use or where to put the shadows. So I'm not sure where that leaves writing. And my bigger concern is that you're not putting in the work to improve your craft, so you may get stories or books out there, but you don't have the writing skills to back them up.
What I can tell you is this: people still write when they have kids, and jobs, and school, and various other responsibilities and dependents. They may only write for twenty minutes a day, or once a week for an hour, but they find the time. And some don't... some put off writing until the kids are older or the other obligations let up... either route is fine. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think not having time or energy is a good excuse for using AI or over-relying on it. But, I also don't think you should feel bad if you're simply using it as a tool to help flesh out your own thoughts and ideas. ♥

This is a strictly anti-AI blog, and as such please do not use any of my characters or story beats in any ai platforms to generate anything. I ask that you respect my integrity and talent as a writer in this, and that goes for every writer on this platform.

Authors Note
Thank you so much to all of my original readers. It’s been a bumpy ride with me through the end of high-school, the fall out of friendships, and the beginnings of college. I have not been the most consistent writer, but I believe I am ready to recommit myself to this passion.
I forgot how much I enjoy the writing process, and Venus haunts me nearly everyday. I felt it was time I try to do her justice and write her story.
For my new readers, welcome! If you want to be slightly spoiled for this series, or simply want to see how choppy my old writing style was, the old masterlist is still available for viewing. However, be advised. The story may change or stay the same as I see fit, so do not expect an entirely different story nor a parallel narrative. My goal is to just kind of run with it. My feelings about writing have gotten much less people-pleasing since I was sixteen.
Update Schedule:
The schedule will likely be semi-regular. I’m a full time assistant store manager at a retail store, and this my free time is a little stretched. However, this story is my passion, and I’m trying to maintain a healthy creative outlet. Expect chapters to be released once a week unless otherwise specified.
Taglist Rules:
If you’d like to be added to the taglist, you can either shoot me a dm or simply comment on this post. I will tag the username you message me from, unless otherwise specified, and those tags will be listed at the bottom of chapters.

Colin x Penelope - What If You Fly? | Chapter 3
Penelope has got used to loving Colin in secret. To yearn for him when his work takes him around the globe and to hide her heart away when he is near. But a weekend together at a writing conference brings to the surface what has been buried for far too long. Will Penelope finally dare to embrace her ambitions as a writer and confess her feelings to her best friend?
Warnings: angst
Chapter word count: ~2450
MASTERLIST
The angst is really angsting in this one - but it'll get better soon, I promise 🙈
Day 3
The next morning Penelope and Colin attend a discussion titled “The Human Essence in Writing During the Rise of Generative AI”. The panellists and the audience go back and forth about authenticity, lived experience, intellectual labour. About the age-old need to tell stories. And Penelope is thriving. She is so glued to the panel that she barely notices Colin’s gaze on her. “You really loved that, huh?” he grins after. “Obviously. Didn’t you?” “Of course. But I don’t create worlds and characters.” He shrugs. “I just tell other peoples’ stories.” Penelope gapes at him. “That’s not true. You collect all these precious pieces and then craft them into something that feels whole and coherent and yet so… alive. They might be other peoples’ stories but you make them shine.” Colin’s eyes shimmer as he stares at her for a long moment, speechless. “Thank you,” he finally whispers. She feels herself blush under his gaze and averts her own. The room empties out around them and just when she moves to get up he reaches for her arm. “Listen, I know you didn’t want to come to the workshop yesterday and I understand why you panicked under that pressure. But you relished it, didn’t you? You were glowing the entire time. Just like now.” “Col…” “You’re a writer, Pen. You’ve always been a writer. I simply don’t understand why you’re still helping other people live their dreams instead of working on your own.” Penelope glances around at the new group of people trickling into the room. She lowers her voice to just above a whisper. “We’ve had this discussion. I’m over it.” “You’re clearly not. Any idiot can see you’re not happy with your career choices.” “Oh and throwing my heart on the line is going to solve that?” she hisses. “It might.” “Exactly, it might. But what if I put myself out there and receive nothing but rejections? What if my dream gets killed before I ever get the chance to live it? When I have nothing left, what the hell do I do then?” Colin’s eyes are coloured in sympathy and confusion. “Why on earth do you think you would fail?” “Because there are two big things I want in life and one of them has already become a disaster.” She snaps her mouth shut. Fuck. “What?” he asks, suddenly strained. “Just leave it. You’re late for your workshop.” Despite her best efforts her voice is shaking and she quickly rises to her feet to get out of his orbit. But Colin is on her heels, following her out into the hallway. “What are you talking about? What disaster?” “I swear to God, Bridgerton, if you don’t give me some space right now, I’m gonna put you out on the street for the night.” “Pen—“ “Colin, please.” When she whips around, her eyes are filled with tears and he winces. “Just let it go.” His Adam’s apple bobs in his throat. Then he slowly raises a hand to her face and trails it along her cheek. Penelope suppresses a shiver. “Is a dream killed really worse than one never lived?” he whispers. She stares at him for a long spell, a storm raging through her head. “I’ve got to go,” she eventually rasps. “Client meetings.” Without giving him a chance to reply she rushes down the corridor, almost suspecting him to pursue her even further. Thankfully, he does not.
A few hours later, Penelope has lunch out on the patio with a few other agents she started chatting with between meetings. The easy conversation has helped her find her footing again after the way she had left things with Colin. He has always tried to encourage her in her writing pursuits but never has he been so strangely intense about it. Maybe it was a mistake to come here with him. She is still haunted by the desperation in his eyes. By his agonising question that finally voiced what has been clawing at her heart for years — both about him and her career. The ever-looming scales weighing risk against regret. “Here you are.” She inhales deeply before looking up at Colin with a tight smile that is mirrored on his face. He gives everyone else a friendly nod, then squats down beside her. “Why don’t you sit?” she murmurs, the offer only half-sincere. “I’ve got a call scheduled in a couple of minutes. Just wanted to tell you that I’ve made dinner plans with a colleague who’s in the area. Would you like to join us?” “Oh.” Penelope hesitates. “Thanks, but I think I’d rather stay in.” Tension is still simmering between them, as plain in Colin’s features as it probably is in hers. “Okay.” He pushes himself up. “I’ll see you after then.” No more attempts at inviting her along to his workshops. She wonders whether he just doesn’t want to push her any further right now or whether he has given up on changing her mind at last. “Yes. Have a good time.” “You too.” Despite everything he leans down to brush a kiss to her hair and it tugs at her heartstrings. Ever the sweet, caring man she knows. Making it infinitely difficult to let him go. Except that she might have a way out now — if she’s brave enough to take it. Once he has left, she pulls out her phone, staring down at the e-mail from her boss. Have you thought about New York? She recalls the clarity that suddenly came over her last night. It would be good for her not to see him every time he returns to London, right? It has to be. It has to.
No matter how vehemently she pushed back against Colin earlier, Penelope can’t stop thinking about her manuscripts. Could they really be something more than secret files on her computer? Could she be something more than a bystander cheering other people on from the sidelines? She’s distracted throughout all her afternoon events. When she looks down at her notes after, they’re mostly unintelligible. At the end of the day she finds herself hurrying towards the copy station set up in one of the seminar rooms. And before she knows it she’s holding a printout of the novel she was too scared to read from at the workshop. She doesn’t remember the last time she has held any of her work on paper. It’s so different. So… real. Penelope feels strangely secretive when she carries it up to their room, holding it close to her chest. Like she’s smuggling something illegal. When the door clicks closed behind her, her excitement only intensifies. She toes off her shoes, quickly pulls on some comfortable clothes, then settles at the small desk. There is something magical about lifting that first page. About diving into the world she herself has created. It fades a few sentences in when her brain starts catching on all the stylistic and structural flaws and her heart sinks. She is just about to admonish herself when her stomach does it for her by letting out a resonant grumble. “Okay, okay,” she mutters. “Let’s make this good.” She calls the reception to have pumpkin risotto and red wine delivered. Then she goes to wash and moisturise her face, ties her hair up in a bun and lights the electric fireplace. When she sits back down with her food her writing music is playing softly in the background. She takes a deep breath. And begins.
Penelope is so engrossed in her manuscript that she doesn’t hear Colin come in until he calls out, “Honey, I’m home”, making her jump out of her skin. She haphazardly shoves the papers underneath her laptop case and leaps to her feet with a too bright smile. “Hey, how was dinner?” “Good. What are you reading?” he grins. “Is it scandalous?” “What? No!” She feels a blush creep up her neck. “Just a draft from a potential client.” “Uh huh.” There’s a sparkle in his eyes and she notices with relief that their earlier half-fight seems to no longer stand between them. Still, her heart is hammering in her chest. “I’m knackered,” Colin yawns. “Gonna get ready for bed.” “Yeah, sure. Take your time, I’ll go after.” “Did you have a nice evening?” he asks while hanging his jacket over one of the armchairs. “Yeah, it was good. Ordered up food and just worked for a bit.” “Only you would consider work ‘nice’,” he chuckles. “That’s rich coming from the guy who lives and breathes his job.” “Fair.” He sends her a smirk on his way to the en-suite. “Carry on, fellow grafter.” A long exhale leaves her when he closes the door behind him. Then she starts circling the room to walk off some of the adrenaline. She feels ripped out of a different reality, utterly confused to find that her own still exists. And that she still has a million questions to confront in it. “You alright?” Colin’s brows are furrowed when he steps back into the room. Her pulse starts racing again. “Yeah. No. I— I’ve been meaning to tell you something. I had a meeting with my bosses this week.” She chews on her lips for a moment, then pushes the words out in one fluid motion. “They’ve offered me to transfer to the New York office.” “Oh.” His mouth falls open before he manages to chisel a half-smile onto it. “That’s great. They must be very impressed with you. Have you declined yet?” She pushes up her chin in false bravado. “Why should I?” “Because— What?” He stares at her in utter confusion. “Of course you can’t go, that’s…” “Not something anxious little Penelope would do? You’re not the only one who wants to see the world, Colin.” “So travel! Come with me, I’ve got trips to Slovenia and Norway planned and—“ “I’ve already decided to take the job.” “What?” “It’s… It’s just what I need.” “Since when? When have you ever wanted to live in New York? Most days you can’t even stand London and now you’re telling me you want to move to a city that’s double the size and even more obnoxious? And with everything that’s currently going on in the States? Fuck, Pen, they might arrest you at the border or some shit.” “You’re being dramatic.” “And you’re being impulsive. That’s not the kind of decision you just make without thinking it through.” “Right, because the great Colin Bridgerton is known for being oh so steady and prudent. You’ve been gallivanting around the planet for a decade, but sure, go ahead and lecture me on the dangers of taking a risk for once in my life.” “So, that’s a risk you’re easily willing to take but you won’t even try to get your writing published?” “Christ, not that again.” “Yes, that again. What are you not telling me, Pen?” “Nothing.” “Stop lying.” “Then stop pestering me.” “Not when you are clearly trying to avoid—“ “It’s too much, okay? You are too much, Colin.” He stares at her as if she’s slapped him across the face. Neither of them remembers how to breathe. “I was just trying to be a good friend.” His voice unravels at the seams. “A good friend wouldn’t treat me like a fucking child,” she presses out. Then she turns on her heel and flees to the bathroom, slamming the door like a shot through the night.
Penelope couldn’t say how long she sits on the toilet lid, her face buried in her hands. She hates herself for putting her own heart before his this time. For making him doubt his tender soul. All because she cannot tell him her true reasons. That he can no longer be her oxygen, no matter how much she craves him. That she prays this exact craving will pass once she has created a life that is not entangled with his. He’s right, most days London drives her mad. But maybe New York could be the first adventure of many, the first real adventure of her own, instead of living vicariously through Colin. She’s barely travelled outside the country, never outside the continent. Once the initial hurt has passed, she might finally become more than the shy, despondent girl still hung up on her first love. She only wishes she didn’t have to hurt Colin as well. Hadn’t already hurt him with her accusation. It’s true, he is too much for her, but the only blame falls to her own foolish heart.
When she returns to the room, it’s dark, save for the small lamp by her bed. Colin is curled up under his blanket, turned to the wall and completely silent. The tension in the air makes her sick. Her body instinctively gravitates towards his form, desperate to touch him, to apologise. But as much as she is threatening to crumble, her mind holds fast. She can’t play this game anymore. Maybe this for the best. Create some distance between them, break up the painful mess they’ve been caught in for so long. Penelope slips into her own bed, switching off the light. The sudden cloak of darkness adds further weight to the already suffocating silence. She turns her back to him and tries to slow her breathing despite her heavy pulse. It will be fine. She can’t imagine how yet, but somehow she will learn to live without him, at least for a while. Until her heart can let go of Colin Bridgerton at last. Minute after minute passes at an agonising pace. Then, suddenly, a whisper cuts through the pitch black. “Pen?” She lies perfectly still. “I’m sorry. Truly. My fears shouldn’t hold you back when you’re finally daring to do something that big. I didn’t mean to be overbearing. I just… I will really miss having you at home. I can’t picture it without you.” A sob nearly breaks from her lips. She bites down on her fist instead and lets the hot tears soak into her pillow. Her love for him burns through her chest with ferocity. But she says nothing. His sheets rustle as he turns to face her. He calls out her name again, even more quietly. A delicate, fragile plea to forgive him. He’s never been the type to let a wound fester, always desperate to restore the peace. Once, when he and Eloise had a horrible fight, he did not sleep for three days because it ate him up inside. She knows all this and yet she can’t bring her throat to produce a single sound. All she can do is weep silently and ache for him until exhaustion finally pulls her under.

The thing about using generative AI for roleplaying practice is that you do not learn essential communication skills. You do not learn how to plan out of character with your roleplay partner, you do not learn how to build a satisfying story or greater narrative for your characters, you don't learn how to connect these threads together. You also simply do not learn how to make roleplaying an enjoyable writing experience for your partner, you're training yourself to see them as a tool for you to obtain your pleasures as a writer. You're seeing them as about as important as any other element that shakes up your story to prevent writer's block, the same way you'd use a writing prompt or a dice roll.
You do not learn patience of waiting for someone to craft a reply, it comes to you instantaneously, with no clarifying questions if they might have misunderstood your previous passage. It just assumes, it hallucinates, it regurgitates. So when you move to roleplaying with a real person you find yourself frustrated when it takes a while. You find it annoying that they ask for you to clarify something. You start to hate having to actually talk to someone—it feels like a chore.
When you're done with a plot thread with something like Character AI you can close the window to drop the topic instantly. You do not have to learn to resolve it—you can't after all when the bot is programmed to always get the last word in. You do not concern yourself with questions of if that roleplaying experience was enjoyable for the person on the other side of it, because you have grown accustomed to there not being a person on the other side. Everything ends abruptly at your whim.
AI will either hallucinate something so wildly different than what you wanted that you will be forced to rein it in, hit whatever undo button the bot provides you with, and tweak things until it cooperates, or it will never surprise you. You'll chat with 8 different characters and they all speak more or less the same, or they speak about the same things, or they'll perform the same predictable actions with a new coat of paint slapped on top of it. Because they're all ultimately pulling from the same pool of other people's words.
Generative AI will not offer you anything new to learn that roleplaying with people will not teach you. Often, writing with peers will teach you these things better. You may find yourself giving credit to the AI for teaching you these skills or providing you with easy practice, but those things are not the bot. Anything of merit that rises from these conversations with bots you will realize came from yourself, making the best of what you were given if it made no sense. This satisfaction is from you, and you could find that elsewhere without any of the downsides that comes with generative AI. There is little value to be found in speaking to a glorified predictive text algorithm trained on the amalgamation of works of real people you could be speaking to with your limited time on earth. If you really think that will be more rewarding, just write. You don't have to roleplay. Just write your own words by yourself. Don't waste your time on a bot that has nothing good to teach you.
-Mod Sneasel
Some videos if you want to continue the conversation on generative AI. Just for fun since I actually keep up with a lot of AI related topics in my spare time. These are nowhere near all of them, just the ones that I felt like had a nugget of relevancy without themselves being made by AI.
Video discussing specifically fiction writing using AI and the pitfalls within in. Note: The creator of this video states in a community post that they use ProWritingAid and is instead a criticism more on ChatGPT and the dubious claims of AI fiction writers.
Video about the debate sparked by NaNoWriMo claiming that not supporting AI is racist and ableist. Note: This video centers around backlash against ProWritingAid as a sponsor.
Video explaining the controversy surrounding someone trying to create an AI teaching tool for writers. There is a focus on the concern of piracy and copyright infringement, and while the tool is meant to be for providing a detailed analysis of the text you put into it there were discussions of adding GenAI in the future. The point is, the video breaks down why using other people's stolen works "purely for learning" can still be controversial.
A comedic and generalized conversation about the current state of AI.

Comprehensive List of Tips for Self-Publishing Authors

Cover Design
"Never judge a book by its cover" is a philosophy very rarely followed by most readers, so it's important to make sure your cover is as eye-catching, aesthetically pleasing, and true to your story as possible. The cover should encompass what your story is about and it should give the reader a glimpse into the world you've spent years creating.
For most of us who are not artistically inclined, trying to create a cover design on our own is incredibly challenging. When you find yourself unable to generate an exemplary product, you may need to turn to a freelance designer or a company that specializes in poster/book cover graphics. Here are some options for you to explore:
Fiverr - budget-friendly, ample reviews from previous customers, and examples of work are provided by the designer, but make sure to be aware of AI use so your product is made authentically.
BespokeBookCovers - this company asks that you give a short synopsis of your book, along with some basic details, then you will be contacted to discuss more about what you are looking for. They do require a 50% deposit prior to beginning the design, but you do receive the product within 12 business days. They also ensure you are completely satisfied with the product before the transaction is complete. This company may not be the best for fantasy authors as most of their covers have more of a Colleen Hoover-esque aesthetic.
Miblart - This is a wonderful cover design company for fantasy writers, as evident in the examples provided on their website's home page. They do not require prepayment and offer payment installations in case the total cost at once puts a financial strain on you.
Editing and Formatting
Similarly to traditional publishing, you need to thoroughly self-edit your work before submitting it for professional editing. Suppose you feel as though you are proficient enough in editing that you do not require professional services or you cannot accommodate the cost. In that case, I suggest using workbooks or software to make sure your grammar and syntax are as high quality as possible. Here is a list of editing tools that can help you review your work:
Grammarly - a good resource for spelling, but it often flags intentional word-choice and sentence structure to make it more simple, which may be incompatible with your writing style. Also be aware of incorrect suggestions.
The Copyeditors Handbook - offers a guide to book publishing and addresses common writing errors. Does come with a workbook to help you exercise your skills.
It's also important that you understand the risks of self-editing. Sometimes it's hard to see flaws in your own story/writing because you already know all of the details. The reader does not have this knowledge, so certain plot points, wording, or details may be lost on them. Having a second set of eyes is incredibly beneficial to help you solve this problem. Here are some outside editing tools:
UpWork - allows you to list a job and review applicants. Each applicant is verified to be real, and you can sample some of their work and their credentials by viewing their profile.
Reedsy - employs Big Five editors to find a proper match for your writing
Raab & Co. - a self-publishing company that helps match you to a professional editor
ISBN
An ISBN number can help readers identify and find your book across multiple platforms, given that an ISBN is a unique number. You can buy an ISBN through Bowker or ISBN.org. An ISBN number on this website costs about $150 USD. This is not a necessary step, so no worries if you don't get one. It simply helps your book be more recognizable and appear more professional.
Pricing
The best way to figure out how to price your book is to look at similar publications on the platform you intend to publish on. Amazon is the most common, so look at your options. Generally, you can publish the book for a fixed price, or you can use Kindle Unlimited. Here's a list of pros and cons for Kindle Unlimited:
Pros:
Paid per page read, which is amazing for longer works or series
Saves a lot of time and effort as most of the work is done by Amazon, and it can generate more income than other platforms
Gain popularity because each time someone checks out your book or adds it to their library, it counts as a sale in your sales rank, which can boost your profile
Cons:
Unable to publish more than 10% of your book on any other platform while it is available on Kindle Unlimited, which limits your ability to reach a greater audience
Sometimes the length of the book affects income more so than the quality of the writing itself, so your book may be incredible well-written but have a lower sales rank.

Writers! Please watch out for this blog:
Please watch out for the blog named "hoohamaru" They're a Kakareader shipper, and that's okay.
What is NOT okay is what they did after, which is bashing, and then after I posted a chapter, they started sending me sexual posts and insisted on sexting.
Not to mention lying to me about their identity(at least I'm presuming BCS of said reason shown in the texts and their speech mannerism), lying about their age and profession (which I don't care about but lying about ur age doesn't go well w my rules of requesting, especially a smut.), and then claiming that I was "bashing" an 18-year-old when I simply responded to their claims. Ig that I was severely behind on updating a story, but I was writing a request and had things going on irl, as well as motivational problems concerning Naruto and other franchises in general and mainly focused on gaming and irl matters.
I write for fun, i don't get paid to write, i enjoy it, but sometimes there r times I simply can't write.
So if this person sends you an inbox, which will basically be a Kakareader-related request, most likely about soulmate AU, please block or be wary of them. They might do this to u 2.
Thank you.
Here r some screenshots of our convos,
Mind you, they txted me w intervals and were begging me to finish the story, to which I was on hiatus bk then bcs I was simply losing motivation.
I mean- is it a sin that I have a life outside of writing, lose interest here and there and want to continue writing the story? No. I will admit I should have added that write in my own speed, to which I have added now, but if you can't wait for the writing to be done, then just ask someone else to write it. It's common sense.
Not to mention i deliberately explained in detail why I couldn't write at that moment and I would eventually, to which I did. Thanks, I did write the ending BCS this asshole made me furious.
In the end i did tag them but later removed them because of the screenshots below:
Here they showed me their AI-generated picture of themselves, which I won't reveal and then started sexting me out of nowhere even when I made it CLEAR that I was not comfortable w it. They gave me weird vibes from the start, but I focused on writing.
While i do understand that this person might be just some 16-18 year-old teenage troller or something, this is not an okay for people to do.

I wish people would understand that the reason something is '' bad* '' isn't because it didn't do what you wanted but because it was badly done in what it was TRYING TO do. I'm so fed up with the absolution of hypotheticals and I say this as a person who regularly writes rewrite-stuff for fun.
I'm so effing done with people saying Frozen ''was ACTUALLY going to be a good movie, once" based on oold concept art alone where Elsa was more villainous and the characters had better designs. Yes I too prefer that look for the characters over the final film but the thing is- you don't know what that movie was like!! That movie you're talking about doesn't exist. That version of Frozen isn't Frozen; it's an entirely different movie which is why the writers made the change they did with Elsa's character. If you don't like it that's cool ((*Peter Griffin 'ah she said it!'*)). But, you wanting to "fix" the movie by insisting it go back to it's original concepts, the ones you haven't actually experienced but simply like more in theory...at that point write an original story instead of trying to rewrite anything. Watch the Soyuzmultfilm Snow Queen and talk about something other than how awful Frozen is. This here is a Wendys' and there's far more legit reasons to hate Frozen other than " D> WAAaaah! They didn't make the woobie-queen the way I WANT HER TO BE!!", so do us a favor and shut up about how concept art-Frozen was the "superior" film simply cuz you hate Frozen. No it was not. It may have been a better looking film but it wasn't better just cuz it's not the thing you hate.
Look, let me put it another way...
Disney's Wish is bad. I would really like to see some genuine receipts on if any of it's production was actually AI-generated or not(((this 'it has to be because JUST LOOK/LISTEN TO IT' is a badfaith badtake; that's how we got to the point of saying Lion King literally traced Kimba the White Lion. Stop it. Show some receipts or shut up))), but it's actual problem is it's a rushed and incredibly hollow wanky-production. The entire vibe of the movie is celebratory of Disney as a brand rather than Disney as an artform. The characters are awful and the songs are terrible sns.
In relation to the beforementioned Frozen-concepts, yes I also would have preferred something about a hopeful girl and a starboy and also a legit equally evil king and queen who are villains in love. I can't for certain say that would have been a 'good' movie because that movie, again, doesn't exist. ((cope)) The final concepts that make up Wish: evil King who doesn't see himself as the bad guy being told off by his actually good wife +talking goat that looks like a baby but is really an adult +cutsey sentient kawaii star; ALL these concepts could have worked and have been fun! I was ready to eat up these concepts. The reason I didn't is the same reason everyone else hates actually hates the movie for -I think final movie is bad and unlikable and shallow in the worst way possible. No, you're not changing that take. Please don't argue with me. Wish is an annoying and kind of hateful movie to everyone who didn't work on and so has some attachment to it ((it's really for their sake that I ask we not claim Wish is ai; don't do underpaid+starstruck writers dirty by claiming they mustn't exist. AI didn't snuff out the reality of hired writers being rushed and forced to make something that doesn't work-work)). In the words of Bojack Horseman, "It [Disney's Wish] had all the right pieces, but it just… It couldn't put them together."
THAT'S what's wrong with Wish. Heck maybe that's what's wrong with Frozen or Moana or Zootopia for you, person reading who hates those movies. I'm not you.
Love or hate a thing for what it ultimately actually is. If you have a "fickle"-love/hate thing going on for a thing; like with me and Princess and the Frog or anything by VivziePop; redesign your soul away. ((it's complicated gurl, I've been there)). BUT if you actively resent something the way I do Illumination films or Wish, do the world a favor and hold it responsible for what it did as a final movie vs what it could have done as a concept. The fact that it isn't the concept you wanted isn't the problem with it.
To wrap up this discussion on exclusively Disney properties-as-examples; what's actually wrong with Chicken Little is a bad case of Poochie-syndrome. Chicken Little was a mangled, sad production of an already odd premise fueled by spite and hating the very thing it was trying to do. If you look at the writing for what was going to be it's direct-to-DVD sequel you can see how these characters could have worked...the movie itself was a catastrophe because of everything added onto it rather then what was taken away.
