Helena Marchmont is my A Girl for All Time doll from the Regency period in Great Britain. She doesn't have a book, and so I know very little about her. That, of course, means I get to create her story myself! My Helena lives in England in 1816, during the Year Without a Summer. This was a real event caused by the eruption of a volcano in Indonesia in 1815, which put so much dust and ash into the atmosphere that it blocked sunlight. This caused extreme cold temperatures through spring and summer in the northern hemisphere. Crops were killed by frost or never grew at all. Famine was widespread as food prices spiked.

Despite all the trouble in the world, Helena cheerfully continues to look for reasons to be hopeful. She is warmly dressed in the long-sleeved gown I made for her. Looking at the pictures now, I think I should shorten the skirt--Helena is a lively 12 year old girl and deserves to be able to run and climb more freely! I also made her cameo necklace, but I think from now on she'll save that for fancy occasions.

Put half of the squad in summer outfits. Still wish to purchase the purple dress for Rebecca (don’t know why I haven’t yet), as well as Josefina and Samantha’s ensembles.

I was gifted Kirsten’s dress shortly after the hat was discontinued from it, and have not been able to find it listed separately.

The shoes that came with Kit’s summer dress are exactly the same as the ones with the birthday dress, so now I have two pairs.

Hi guys this is my entry for week 5 of @agrosehamada ‘s AG Spring has Sprung 2024. The theme is look a like and as I don’t have a mini me doll I decided to recreate an old photo of me cosplaying Cinderella at London MCM Comic Con using my AG Cinderella doll. Helena (no last name that I could find) is the newest character from A Girl For All Time. As of yet they have not added any other outfits to her collection, but I like the simplicity of the dress her doll comes in.

*There is a slight weights issue with the armpits. It doesn’t effect the functionality of the dress, and is just a small appearance thing.

Clementine, who is from the A Girl for All Time collection, is portraying Cathy Goodman from Eleanor Farjeon’s story “San Fairy Ann”. You can read about this lovely story in an earlier post, “The Little Bookroom”. I love the way Clementine’s arms allow her to hold her doll.

i don't think people really understand what's happening in gaza. with each passing day that sees more and more palestinians dead, it's becoming easier and easier for those in the west to perceive them as nothing more than a statistic. they might engage w the occasional palestine post, sure, but it's just as easy to scroll right past that moments later w no real outrage for the genocide retained.

it's vital to stay reminded that palestinians who are with us today won't be with us tomorrow. it's happening every second of every minute of every hour, and it's relentless. somewhere in gaza a little girl is losing her mother, a little boy is watching his siblings bleed to death, elderly people are infirm with starvation and illness, palestinian women and girls are being sexually assaulted and kept in cages, fathers are leaving tents to find food for their families and not coming back. this is all happening right now, and it's a direct result of the west's complacency. it's a direct result of their not seeing arabs as people worth saving.

it might be hard to compute as a westerner, but this is real. don't let your privilege blind you to your humanity.

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

Helena has arrived!

A couple weeks ago I mentioned that A Girl for All Time is having a warehouse sale with huge discounts on their products. I knew I'd never get Helena for that cheap, so I went for it! Friends, listen to me......... she's incredible. From head to toe, she's perfection.

Helena Marchmont is a spirited 12-year-old girl from 1820. She would rather be running wild outdoors with her cousins at Henley Manor than participating in endless tea parties and dances. But her life becomes much more interesting when she receives a mysterious trunk for her birthday!

A Girl for All Time dolls are based in the United Kingdom, and the character dolls focus on time periods spanning the 1500's to today. In that way they're very similar to American Girl.

The biggest difference between the two brands is their size. The three characters who do have story books only have one, and Helena has none, other than the small blurb on the box she arrived in. The dolls also have few to no other outfits or accessories available. That's fine with me because I can sew my own doll clothes and I look forward to making Helena a nice little collection, but that may be an issue for other collectors.

But the similarities are in their high quality dolls, with lots of love and attention paid to the smaller details.

Helena's dainty little hands have carefully sculpted fingernails and blushing across her palms. She can hold things easily.

She has an all-vinyl body with inset eyes that don't blink.

She is articulated at the elbows and knees. They bend a little bit, but her arms don't extend outwards very much.

Her wig is beautiful, so soft and realistic.

Under her rose-pink dress, she has pantalettes, stockings, and faux leather shoes.

It’s fall, y’all!

Since the last change of seasons I have purchased many new outfits and as you may notice, three new 18” dolls. I’ve had Addy and Julie for a couple months now and Lindsey arrived today.

What’s new since last fall: Kirsten’s dirndl, Addy doll and school outfit, Samantha’s meet accessories, Kit’s meet accessories, Julie doll, cap & scarf and casual outfit, Lindsey doll.

I had to purchase Lindsey’s barrette separately, so when that arrives I will do an intro post for her with some extra goodies.

The smaller dolls got moved to the top shelf on my desk.
