Kuruto Ryuki-AI: The Somnium Files- Nirvana Initiative

Qualifications:

LGBTQ+: He is canonically bisexual (his romantic feelings for another male character are an important part of the plot, and he has a physical relationship with a different character who’s a woman). Disability: He experiences psychotic episodes as well as/possibly caused by PTSD. While I wouldn’t call it perfect rep, the game treats this with surprising empathy—the other characters are only ever gently concerned about him, which ultimately helps him into a place where he can start managing his symptoms. It’s possibly the only video game I’ve ever seen where a character discusses doing inpatient psychiatric care as a serious option that might save his life, not as a threat or a horror level.

CANONICALLY MLM!! Probably bi but they're very vague about whether he likes women. He definitely has a crush on his cringefail male mentor tho <3 And he canonically has hallucinations and dissociative episodes! Also he's missing an eye and uses a prosthetic eye instead, which feels less notable considering the same can be said for at least 3 other main characters in the games, but he's still disabled!!! I'd also argue he's heavily implied to have PTSD considering a lot of his issues come from trauma.

He is clearly Bisexual, based on both his unrequited love for "Mr. Date" (Kaname Date, who I have also submitted), and his attraction to multiple female characters, including the very difficult to categorize relationship he has with the female sentient A.I. "Tama" that is implanted in his Prosthetic left eyeball (referred to in-universe as an "AI-Ball"). Also, quoting directly from the personality section of his article on the wiki (Spoilers ahead for the game AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative): "Another of Ryuki's defining traits is his difficulties with mental health. Although generally calm and collected, he is shown to suffer some form of survivor's guilt and PTSD; although he tries to channel his grief into determination for his investigative work, he generally does not handle emotional stress well, and is prone to bouts of depression, obsession, deep self doubt, and self-blame. His struggles initially stemmed from the traumatic loss of his twin brother in a traffic accident in pursuit of a criminal, and his dislike of stopped clocks, and his hatred of criminals originates from the same event. Additionally, as his symptoms appear to worsen as a result of more traumatic events that occurred during the events of the original Half Body Killing investigations (specifically his feelings of guilt over the apparent death of Date and his exposure to [an extremely potent and long-lasting fictional psychoactive drug that was going to be used in a doomsday cult's terrorist plot]), he becomes prone to dissociation, memory lapses, hallucinations, derealization, and even mania. He also appears to be strangely susceptible to the videos tied to the HB-Case (though this was the case even before his exposure to [the fictional psychoactive drug]), as they seem to trigger his dissociative episodes and hallucinations that leave him questioning his sense of reality. All this, in combination with his struggle to accept forgiveness from other people, lead him to spiral easily, and give him the appearance of being self-destructive and even dangerous. However, deep down he is merely a vulnerable person who deeply struggles with guilt and self-worth, and seeks atonement for his mistakes, but doesn't believe he is deserving of it. With the support of others, he is ultimately able to find the will to pull himself out his depression and start to recover."

He's just... so skrunkly... He's a silly guy with so many problems and relies on the support AI inside his prosthetic eyeball :) He fell in love with a guy and then that guy went missing because of him and he blamed himself for 6 years while his mental health slipped (and it was ALREADY bad before that so... yeah, it really sucks). He's going through it constantly, but he's still funny and loveable and just trying his best ;-;

(In addition to the propaganda below, I highly recommend that the reasoning for his qualification be included in some capacity for propaganda) Ryuki grew up both rich and highly educated until his parents were killed in a plane crash. He was living with his younger brother until his death in 2014 when he was hit by a truck and half of his body was utterly crushed. The only thing Ryuki has left of his deceased parents is a white Rolls Royce Phantom limousine, which he uses as his primary means of transportation. Ryuki always sits in the back seat, with Tama using the car camera to steer the vehicle remotely. As Tama is an AI, the car is technically classified as "self-driving".

The main character is a horny fuckhead while the AI is a nerdy smartass. It has pretty good characters. Even in the next game they replace the main character with another character, who is better than him in every other way, and he even becomes a more likable character when he’s not the main character and just a side character. There was even another main characters in the sequel who was just an awkward, desperate need of sleep and therapy, gay man, and his A.I who was basically just a female bisexual version of the previous main character, but more likable and a bad design. Isn't that insane? Putting better characters who have the potential to be main characters in the spot of the previous one who was mostly annoying? That's insane!”

My cousin watched the anime up to case 2 and felt similarly about Mondo and how they felt Chihiro’s story was similar to that of trans individuals. It doesn’t help either that we have cousins who are trans so it hits close to home, especially with how there are so many stories in the news about trans people, especially trans women being killed by someone trying to “prove themselves” so to speak. But I personally don’t think either Mondo or Kodaka were being transphobic. It’s made clear Mondo did so out of his own personal jealousy and regretted it the moment he saw Chihiro’s body on the floor. That’s why he moved the body to the girl’s room, to keep his promise between men to Chihiro. As for Kodaka, cultural differences aside, trans issues weren’t as well known or discussed back in the early aughts as they are today, so any transphobia that might have shown up in the case was most definitely unintentional. What is aitsf

AI: The Somnium Files, commonly referred simply as AITSF, is an adventure visual novel developed Spike Chunsoft (of Danganronpa series' fame), and written and directed by Kotaro Uchikoshi. The game follows the story of Special Agente Kaname Date, part of a secret police department called ABIS, and Aiba, an A.I. housed in his cybernetic left eye that assists him, trying to solve a case of a mysterious string of murders that started with a woman's body found in an abandoned park, and all have a common theme: the left eye of the victim is always removed. To find the culprit, ABIS makes use of the psycing process, where an agent, known as a psyncer, can enter the mind of another person, the mind being called a somnium. The game then has you searching for the culprit through 5 routes, each one getting you closer and closer to finding the identity of the killer.

There is a (spoiler free) list of content warnings for the game if it's necessary, as it handles a wild variety of topics (some in a good way, some in a bad way).

I've played both A.I.: TSF games as well as MDA: Rain Code to completion, but I'm not seeing it.

AITSF does continue certain themes and styles already present in Uchikoshi's other works. And you could say the same in how Rain Code reworks and re-presents certain themes and styles from the DR games.

Can I talk about Iris's somnium in A.I. The Somnium Files? (huge spoilers)

I wanted to talk about the options between the ways Iris's somnium could have gone. It was either shown as distant, but actual memories or the repressed version of the four murders from the Original Cyclops Killer

But what I really wanted to speak further into was what Pewter said after both versions of the somnium. After it was done, Date and Aiba are either left confused or horrified of what they saw, and Pewter has to explain that while dreams are created by memories or experiences, it doesn't always mean the dream is real. And it's interesting to hear, because in a sense... It makes sense.

One dream doesn't work the same way as another, and even though you may not have experienced it yourself, you still saw it, and is thus created as a memory.

Like dreams of kissing your crush or being in a scene of a video game. None of those things you've experienced in person (unless you're lucky... Or unlucky), but your mind was able to create that scene because you've seen kissing scenes before or have kissed someone yourself. You've also played that game and it was your favorite scene because it's relatable.

Dream D = Memory A + Memory B + Memory C

In order to create a dream, you must have the memories to create it

But you have a lot of memories, and you know a lot of people

So it's just as possible that a dream about a traumatic incident could have someone you know has nothing to do with it as someone who was.

It's just... Really interesting...🤔

1. Dragon Ball: Gohan (sorry Trunks) and I’m sure much to the surprise of anyone who reads this, Baby.

 2. Metroid: Samus Aran. Because how can you be a fan of the series and NOT like her?

3. Mass Effect: Kasumi Goto or Urdnot Wrex. These two are just so much fun, a shame there’s not more of them I would pay all my money for them at any given moment.

4. Borderlands: Gaige. My main gal got a great personality and a great playstyle what more can be asked of a person.

5. Overwatch: Lucio, another main and a fun character over all I have made a lot of good memories while playing the character so he’s very good.

6. Ai: The Somnium Files: Kaname Date. A horrible mess of a human being from a very underrated game, he’s so good. 

7. Kid Icarus: Pit (Though Palutena and Pyrrhon are a good tie) I love the whole cast of uprising so much, it’s honestly hard to choose.

8. Soul Eater: The one and only Free. He’s just trying his best with his one brain cell man.

9. Portal: GLaDOS. This snarky A.I.

10: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Muhammed Avdol. He’s such a good character I wish he was there more, he doesn’t develop throughout the story but it never feels he has to? He feels pretty fleshed out and doesn’t have to grow, which is something I can appreciate.
