For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

They bond :)

The biggest negative in working late shift is that once I clock out, everything has already closed up everywhere else.

Managed to trip on my own shoelaces while I was running to catch my bus home, and while *I*, myself, didn't suffer anything worse than couple minor scapes on one hand (thank you karate lessons for these reflexes), I did, unfortunatlely, land on my phone, and busted its screen.

The phone itself still works, I was able to keep listening to a podcast on spotify all the way home, but the screen won't light up.

Debating with myself on which phone repair shop to take it tomorrow, and in the meantime my tablet has to pretend to be a phone.

Nothing kills my motivation to read an otherwise interesting story faster than a writer who puts ALL character dialogue in the same paragraph. Please STOP DOING THIS.

Wintersun

A short Shepherds of Haven fic that takes place on Wintersun. Some vague spoilers for Chapter 4 and Blade's 5th day off in the Alpha build. Also there's a reference to this bit of a fic I haven't finished, but it's not necessary to understand what's going on.

"Happy Wintersun," Kyrahlise said as she handed Blade a slim package not much larger than her hand. Neither of them acknowledged the momentary brush of their fingertips.

The gift was neatly wrapped in paper she'd painted with winter berries and small swirls of gold. All tied off with a thin green ribbon salvaged from one of her old dresses. The design was overly flashy for his taste, but she had been too focused on making it pretty and was short on time to repaint something more austere.

Blade raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. "You didn't need to," he said, yet she could've sworn his face softened as his eyes traced the designs on the paper.

Kyrah smiled having anticipated he'd say something along those lines. "I'm aware. But I wanted to and thought you might enjoy it."

He looked up from the gift to meet her eyes. "Did you paint this?" Of course he remembered she painted. While in The Reach he'd fussed at her plenty to not paint outside. He trusted her judgment enough to promote her to Captain after a month, yet the cold was somehow too much. He made absolutely no sense.

"Yes," she said in a light tone.

"It's nice." Did Blade's compliment make her feel happy in a way it probably shouldn't? Yes. But she'd take that to her grave before admitting it to anyone.

"Thank you, though I hope you like what's inside more."

Blade's eyes went back to the present he held delicately. She ignored the strange little feeling in her chest when he untied the ribbon and slipped it into a pocket before carefully unfolding the paper. Underneath was a small book of poetry. "You remembered, thank you."

An unusual wave of nerves washed over Kyrahlise. What if he'd read this collection before and hated it? Well, there was no use worrying about it now that the book was in his hands. "Yes, by one of my favorite contemporary poets. Are you familiar with her work?"

"I'm not."

Her smile was tinted with relief. "I hope you find her poetry to your taste."

There was a upward tilt to his lips as he nodded. Kyrah gathered he was thanking her again, but reading his subtle expressions was like cracking a code.

Not that she needed to decipher anything to understand Blade's kindness. He'd always been considerate and respectful towards her. A sharp contrast to how many Norms treated her after she left the Circle. Like when he'd been livid because of what happened in that damned cave, it had filled her with so much warmth. She'd almost forgotten what it was like to have anyone care about her well-being. It was the catalyst for certain feelings towards him being stirred up. Feelings she accepted existed then politely ignored.

Though a recent incident in his room made her question if Blade was really as indifferent to her as he so often appeared.

When Kyrahlise glanced back up at Blade, his eyes were so gentle as they met hers it brought an instinctive smile to her lips. The first time he looked at her like that was when she learned black was the warmest color of all. The way his gaze slowly traced over her face almost felt like a sweet caress that seemed to stop briefly at her lips. But she was likely imagining things again.

A slight frown passed over his face as his free hand twitched, then clenched against his side. He looked at her another moment, gave a hint of a nod and another quick 'thank you' before turning and walking away. When he was out of earshot she sighed. Maybe one day she'd figure out what was really going on inside that inscrutable head of his.

thinking about how. MORE than one old white woman presiding over me during my master's program in some capacity,,, has gently (unprompted) insinuated to me that accommodations are available, academic or otherwise

like i've had classmates undergo the same meetings, the same presentations for the same prof, etc and they do Not get the same gentle "oh you poor little thing. is this so hard for you? do you need help?"

and it's like. on one hand cool, thanks, glad that's available. i am, however, legit fine and chilling and doing better than ever in a classroom environment because i Stopped Masking in my mid-twenties and i sit cross-legged and play with my spiky ball sometimes and i'm vibing

glad accommodations exist. none of them would do anything helpful for me specifically. but if me being visible is what it takes for you to ? ? feel like you're Helping students who need/use accommodations ? to assuage your Guilt idk lol ? then ok white woman i will continue to exist within eyesight

Nick himself said that his knowledge is confined to the leaks prior to s4, the s4 scripts from his verified source (likely within a source) and basic knowledge most fans paying attention have been able to formulate about s5 based on what has been released officially/unofficially, trends from Netflix and common sense.

He is saying based on all that, he doesn’t think byler is happening. 

And if we think back to what the Duffers themselves shared in the 4x09 script, it literally implies Mike’s monologue worked, and that it was entirely genuine. This tells me that the script the Duffers released for Emmy consideration, is not that far off from what Nick saw for himself. 

I think it’s likely Nick got something that the average below the line worker might manage to get their hands on if they tried hard enough. A copy they know they have to water-down to prevent these very situations from happening.

Unfortunately for the Duffers, it just so happens that they didn’t scrub their watered down copy hard enough.

Unfortunately for Nick, he admitted that it’s possible and even likely that the production will release things that aren’t exactly accurate with the sole purpose to lead fans sleuthing astray, without realizing it may have ironically already happened to him.

Books of 2025: MINIMIZING MARRIAGE by Elizabeth Brake.

As part of my quest to read aro-adjacent nonfiction, I put in an inter-library loan request for this many moons ago. It's due back today, so naturally I finished it this morning at 12:04AM technically, we'll count that as a win.

The whole book was much more readable than expected, given that its header declares it STUDIES IN FEMINIST PHILOSOPHY--the prose was fine, actually! I don't have the background to speak to the philosophical or feminist framing of her arguments, but her main proposition is that reworking the institution of marriage to one of "minimal marriage" would be good for everyone. She defines minimal marriage as "a legal framework that avoids amatonormativity, supporting caring relationships including 'traditional,' polygamous, and same-sex marriages as well as 'Boston marriages,' friendships, and urban tribes." Basically: take the good parts of marriage (contractual agreements/protections, the social indicator of This Relationship Is Important To Me, forcing state/governmental recognition of chosen relationships, etc.), but divorce (ahaha) them from One Central Sexual/Amorous Relationship (and also from childrearing, because that could be a separate thing) and allow those benefits to be divvied out to an individual's network of care as they see fit. It was interesting!

Now, I didn't actually read this for the marriage angle, I read it for the amatonormativity pieces, so I blitzed through most of the book. Chapter 4, "Special Treatment for Lovers: Marriage, Care, and Amatonormativity," was where I spent most time and took the most notes. (For context: I took 4.5 pages of notes total, and 1.5 of those were on chapter 4.) I probably could've read just that chapter, honestly, and gotten what I wanted from this book--the focus on amatonormativity in this chapter was validating and coherent and well-articulated, which I appreciated as An Aro™ swimming in its mire. Example, from page 89:

Amatonormativity prompts the sacrifice of other relationships to romantic love and marriage and relegates friendship and solitudinousness to cultural invisibility.

Which!! Yeah!! That's it, baby!!!!

Anyway. Glad I finally got my hands on a copy of this, glad to have read it and to absolutely not have saved the relevant pages in digital format, because holy shit is it hard to find physically. A lot to chew on, but not as much as I feared from 206 pages of Philosophy; much more approachable than anticipated, if this is a thing you're interested in, too!

Avowed's codex function during dialogue (it highlights words and names and when you press F it'll give you a little lore blurb) FUCKS for so many reasons that have already been said, like not having to have already play previous Pillars games to jump into Avowed, the world-building, etc.

But the accessibility of it?? Beautiful. As a guy who has mild face blindness - doubly so for video game characters - and is neurodivergent so keeping track of stuff like that is hard, this feature is so handy. Like fuck immersion and unpausable dialogue flow, I want an index so when Joe Whothefuck pops up 60 hours later after I met him I can refresh myself and pretend this isn't the first time I am seeing them. Game devs, I am begging, more of these features please

YO! It's the anon from before! Sorry it's been almost a month lol but you asked me last time what my thoughts were on the lonely hearts murders and I hadn't actually played it at the time, but now I have!

I loved it, it's really cool all the differences from dorian gray. like obviously the significantly larger cast, all the animations and cutscenes, the map being wayy bigger and the different chapters taking place in different places around town. I also think it had just enough tie ins to oscars story that it felt worth it to play? If that makes sense, I was figuring it would be largely disconnected from oscar despite technically being in the same series but there was a lot of stuff!

I'm making a youtube video about the brink of consciousness series and I keep thinking of plot related questions that I have nobody to ask, so I hope you dont mind if I come to you every once in a while! (and even regardless of the video there's lots to ponder)

Do you think the story about Matilda's late husbands boat (the gentle villain) has anything to do with the plot? I can't really think of anything but it seems like there has to be a reason that they put that whole explanation in there??

how are archie and oscar actually related, cus in the game itself matilda mentions that oscar is her grand-nephew (?) which would make him archies nephew, but in the dev interview included in the collectors edition they describe matilda as oscars great grandma? im assuming one of these is a translation error or something but im not sure, kinda figure we just pick one and go with it but im wondering which one you pick lol

in dorian gray, theres a note sam finds that explains the beginning of oscar's obsession with embalming people, and that he just saw some embalmed animals and thought they were beautiful, do you think this is really the case? given what we know after lonely hearts about matilda and even archie's behaviors. Of course 1, they didnt know the details of the lonely hearts murders yet when they made dorian gray syndrome and also 2, all those notes were allegedly fake anyways (yeah right...) so theres that. I personally kinda think oscar found the mask and matilda's memoirs (that we know she would write cus thats how logan and jayden found out she was involved) and thought she was #lit and was like lemme do this actually

So I'm going to be honest, I held back on answering this because I recently started taking my medications again and it's affecting how I think as of late. I cannot seem to recall a lot about the Lonely Hearts Murders game for the LIFE of me despite having a recent revisit to it, so I want to replay it before being able to properly answer your questions about the plot. If I'm going to be honest - I pay waaaay more attention to Dorian Gray Syndrome's plot/characters as it is my favorite of the two. <3

As for your last question, though! -- When I initially played Lonely Hearts Murders, I thought it was a kind of lame decision to make Oscar's 'killing' a family-related thing and not something he came up with on his own, as I really liked the initial following they were going with to the original story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, regarding Oscar's obsession with keeping the youth and beauty of others immortalized, it's such an interesting take to the original book that I'll make my jumbled thoughts about it its own thing.

I'm sure you've seen my post analyzing Oscar's notes in-game, about which ones might be 'legitimate' or not. I think it's up to the player to interpret just how much of what Oscar 'reveals' is true. He claims nothing Sam learned about him was true, and maybe that *had* been honest at the time before they made the next game, but Lonely Hearts Murders makes you question the legitimacy of it all when you get a peek into Oscar's past and family. It could be exactly what he claims -- a lie, and the truth is that it was something he learned from Matilda and chose to continue with -- or it's a masked truth, and he learned about the embalming that way and found his purpose for it later on. I kind of like the latter better, personally.

My mind's been racing about the mask, if there was any symbolism as to how we(Logan) found it and if it was ever taken into police custody afterwards. I recall it being used as a sort of key to open a door or something, so I doubt it would've been retrieved again by Logan, which makes me think Oscar revisited his family's past and, as you say, found Matilda's memoirs and donned the mask.

But. What is the mask's story. Who wore it first? Matilda? Where did it come from? Why DOES Oscar wear the mask?
