How To [Actually] Write a Combat Medic

…according to combat medics and those who know them - Part 1/?

I’ve learned that the best way to get inspiration for characters in certain careers is to find firsthand accounts from people within those careers.

So, in researching for Pharma and Flatline, I found some combat medic skits on YouTube, and I am LOSING MY MIND at some of these comments:

Of course, not all medics are like this, and these commenters only represent a small part of the combat medic population…but I’m rolling with it because, at least in Pharma’s case, one of my goals has always been to keep a little bit of the Unhinged around.

It’s nice to know I can back that writing choice with reality. lol

I'm not saying much on the situation because we don't know all the facts and we probably won't so it's hard to read exactly what's happening.

But it's mindblowing to me that they continue to not bring back beloved recurring characters that people would like to see things from and would allow them to change up what they've been doing. Like I, for one, am sick of love interest after love interest for Buck and Eddie, whereas Ravi, I feel, has the potential for them to do a new romance storyline.

I know fandom isn't generally in tune with the main audience, but I can't imagine they're far off with things like this?

Looking at r/Deltarune to see what theories ppl have come up with based on That One Valentine and it’s soooooooo funny to me that every single post about it is the same. Actual quotes from the subreddit:

“How do we know this is gaster”

“Why else would it mention the letter being impossible to understand at the start”

“It doesn’t have the signature stilted tone gaster’s always had”

“It doesn’t read like gaster in English at all”

“I feel like the beginning narration, the all caps, and the style of writing clearly point to gaster”

“We have no real reason to think he’d talk this way… ever”

It’s back and forth with these general opinions, especially of ‘oh that’s not how he talks’ and I’m just sitting here like

1. When you are a scientist, you do not necessarily talk the same in academic contexts as you do in casual contexts. For the most part, I speak COMPLETELY differently from my papers I’ve written for school compared to when I’m flirting with my partner.

The next day, Jason wakes up with a yawn. He stretches, letting out a relieved exhale. That was one of the best nights of sleep he’s had in a long time.

Usually, the Pit’s bothering him, combined with hours of patrolling and fighting crime, usually getting injured as well, he usually wakes up sore and almost just as exhausted as he goes to sleep.

But now…

It was calm. He felt calm.

He didn’t quite dream, though that was fine, as he hadn’t had any nightmares either.

It was… refreshing.

Though, all of it is also kind of… unnerving…

All these good things happening?

The Joker finally dying, meeting a cute guy who doesn’t seem intimidated by him as Red Hood and taking him out on a date, the Pit barely bothering him, sleeping better than he had in years…

With all of that happening, Jason can’t help but wonder…

When is the other shoe gonna drop?

His good mood slightly dampened with disconcertion, Jason gets out of bed with a small grunt. He doesn’t bother to get changed yet, instead moving along to the kitchen to start on breakfast.

After taking in the groceries he has left, Jason starts making some simple bacon and eggs. He catches himself humming while cooking and abruptly stops, continuing his cooking with a small frown on his face.

Why is he feeling this… this… good?

Just what is happening with the Pit?

He’s not enchanted or drugged or anything, is he?

It’s all the unknowns that are making Jason slightly worried.

Are his emotions still his own?

He feels like most of his worries have been stripped from his body. He feels way more comfortable in his skin. He feels happy, content, tranquil…

He just feels so much.

…

But still no rage.

He eats his breakfast while he ponders over his newfound emotional state. It’s as he eats that his eyes land on his phone.

The Bats have probably blown up his phone with calls and messages in the meantime.

And the fact that he doesn’t feel as irritated or mad as he should about it is another point of slight concern.

Either way. Ugh, Jason still doesn’t really want to deal with it.

However…

After he has put his plate away, he picks up his phone anyway and turns it back on. Sure enough, he has too many missed calls and unread messages. And it seems that with his ‘online’ status, some are encouraged again and start sending him more texts.

Jason ignores it all in favor of doing what he had planned to do when turning his phone back on anyway, messaging Danny.

Just so that he has Jason’s number as well

…

And perhaps to plan another date meetup, he thinks with an involuntary soft smile on his face.

So I keep thinking about how Shadow Kirby is confirmed in canon to be just as powerful and capable as regular Kirby, so long as he can push past his own reluctance and fears. Then I started thinking about the unique color palette he has for the Fighters games, if that could be a sort of visual indicator of him reaching that full potential. Then I started thinking about who was around to teach him these skills, and the differences in their techniques, and how SD’s treatment of SK might be vastly different from DMK, and how that affects the relationship that DMK & SD might have, and how it all ties in to the sociopolitical climate of the Mirror World as a whole, and oh stars dammit am I making another AU again???

On an unrelated note, screw the Mirror World for giving everyone in it just the most annoying color palettes to shade. Grays on grays on grays and sometimes red but mostly grays. I am languishing in render hell and ready to move on to the next one thank you. Too many headcanons - not enough time or hands or energy.

UPDATE 03/01/24: Changed SK's eyes to purple instead of blue, and changed DMK's cape from gray to dark red.

i think a shattered glass earthspark were the decepticons won the war and optimus joind ghost is alot more intresting than megatron, cause besides Nova prime in the comics there hasbt been a story were SG prime gets a redemption arc

I personally really like both options (baseline Megatron redemption arcs and sg Optimus redemption arcs), but there's so many ways we can toy with a SG Optimus redemption arc

I like to think there's a hesitance to his actions that isn't there with baseline earthspark Megatron. They've got different edges softened out different edges still sharp. In my mind, there's a farther point in acknowledging how sg Optimus used to (and may slightly still) sucked because he's often harsher than certain depictions of Megatron.

Absolutely torn on how much SG Megatron forgives Optimus for the shit he's done in the war. Is it less than we think? More? About the same as we think? How much do we think Optimus regrets it?

How does SG Optimus treat his former subordinates?

How does SG Optimus interact with the (other?) SG decepticons? In my mind in a decepticon win scenario we commonly see SG Soundwave and SG Shockwave (I think I've mentioned my plans with Starscream before for my one es:sg au) (which is not the SG Earthspark au you'll see talked about on this blog), and I feel like SG Shockwave and SG Starscream still (deeply, deeply in SG Starscream's case) distrust SG Optimus.

I've talked about SG Optimus's possible new interactions with humans in The Wolf Who Loved The Hand au where Optimus chose to defect specifically for Megatron in a "I will be a better person for you" way, I feel like his interactions with humans aren't as well practiced as baseline Megatron's (or at least the ones we see, which again there's bias in the scene because Dot and Earthspark Megatron are close, and we see how he does not like Kroft. But I want to see how Megatron interacts with those he doesn't know well, doesn't know at all, or is neutral on.) because it might lead to more sillygoofy scenarios (though it might lead to more intriguing scenarios)
