Have you ever thought about how weird it is that we as a fandom assign a character a sexuality and everyone just agrees about it when most of the time canon sexualities are ignored?

And while most of the time characters are headcanoned as cis and allo, whenever someone decides to make a character aro/ace or trans, it's always the same one.

Examples as proof and also for fun:

Thomas (The Maze Runner): Bisexual or biromantic asexual, and though fics with a trans character are rare in this fandom, it's always him.

Newt (The Maze Runner): Always gay without fail

Evan Rosier (Harry Potter): designated ace character (interesting side note: barty is normally hypersexual which makes for a very interesting rosekiller storyline to be explored)

Regulus Black (Harry Potter): designated trans character

Nico DiAngelo (Percy Jackson): everyone agrees he's gay (not sure if his sexuality is canon or if it's just canon that he likes guys) and he's always the trans character

I headcanon that newt used to be self conscious about his weight but stopped caring after awhile

Oh yeah definitely, I 100% agree with that!! I've thought A Lot about Newt's relationship with his weight as someone who's fat irl and is also pretty similar to him in personality according to irl people I know, which definitely leads to the Projection. Some general sorts of headcanons about this (warning for internalized fatphobia, disordered eating, and just a fair amount of self hatred below. Also I wrote this in one big block in the middle of the night, so it's going to be kind of incoherent.):

☆Absolutely is someone who's always been naturally chubby/fat. He didn't really think anything of it when he was really little because he looks like his dad and uncle and they're so cool and he loves them so much!! He was always more focused on catching cool bugs and playing Godzilla with his dad and uncle anyway.

☆Once he got to be a little bit older in school, he definitely started feeling insecure. He already had a target painted on his back because he was too smart, too loud, too passionate, too rude, basically too ND for all the other kids and even the teachers (not helped by the fact that he was always ahead in school), so his classmates absolutely started picking on him for his weight and probably his height too. Because of all of that, he started feeling really bad about his body and wishing that he looked different.

☆This also intersects with my HCs about Newt being trans and his relationship with his mom. His mom was the only person in his family who was more thin and conventionally attractive and because he was AFAB, before he came out she basically just wanted to use him as a doll to parade around and show off on the rare occasions she actually saw him and because of that she tended to be critical of a lot of aspects of his appearance. There was a lot of her fussing over him and telling him that he should diet, grow his hair out, be more proper and less messy, dress more feminine, etc, which didn't help his self esteem. Once he came out as trans, she basically just stopped talking to him altogether.

☆There's also a lot of fatphobia in trans spaces, medical gatekeeping based on weight, belief that fat people can never be read as their correct gender, lack of gender affirming products for fat trans people, etc, which also doesn't help.

☆Once he started at MIT (probably around 15 based on canon info??), he was even more in the spotlight because he was known very publicly as a prodigy, was in a lot of news articles and stuff, won a lot of awards, etc, which added a whole other layer of scrutiny from the public to his appearance. He was also pretty isolated from same age peers because of it, so when he did get to socialize with them, his naturally poor social skills were even more atrophied because of it. Because of that, he was subjected to even more weight based bullying than he would have been otherwise, which did an additional number on his self esteem.

☆When Newt started writing with Hermann, he never would have admitted it, but he was kind of happy that Hermann couldn't see him. He had kind of reached a point where he assumed anyone would immediately write him off because of his appearance and particularly his weight and he was so happy to finally be able to make a friend who couldn't dismiss him based on the way he looked. He knew that Hermann could definitely find pics of him online, but he was hoping that the relationship he built through writing would cancel out the way he looked (obviously a super unhealthy thought process, but uhhh). The fact that the first healthy relationship Newt had ever had with a peer was also with a guy who didn't originally know what he looked like also unintentionally reinforced some bad body image stuff.

☆When Newt figured out he was falling in love with Hermann, he was even more terrified of Hermann learning what he looked like. Like he hadn't had a good track record with making friends or people affirming his appearance in the past, but he uhhhh especially hadn't had a good track record with romance. He had been rejected a lot and when someone had gone out with him, they were clearly using him for easy make out sessions and the sort, while not really caring for his personality or appearance in the slightest (and oftentimes making digs at them). Newt was certain Hermann wouldn't do that, but he was still convinced that the only way someone could like him was despite his weight and he was terrified that Hermann wouldn't like him enough for his personality to cancel out the difference (once again, not true and definitely unhealthy, but he's having a real bad time).

☆So they finally meet in person and it goes poorly. It had nothing to do with Newt's appearance and logically he knows that, but there's still some small deeply unkind part of him that's convinced that Hermann took one look at him and decided he was too fat and ugly to even consider staying in contact with, much less dating.

☆(In actuality, Hermann took one look at him and instantly thought that he was the most attractive man he had ever seen in his life. He desperately wanted to press Newt up against the wall and grab his love handles and kiss every inch of his mouth and face and neck and chest he could get his hands on. Being Hermann, he was deeply mortified by having such lewd thoughts about a colleague, especially one so obviously attractive to him, which definitely contributed to them both being incredibly awkward and off their game while meeting.)

☆By this point, I think Newt's in a really bad place mentally with his body and his relationship with his weight, so I think he ends up in a depressive episode for a while. This has the side effect of killing his appetite and so he ends up losing some weight which is really not physically healthy for him, but he feels a sick sort of pleasure in anyway. When he meets back up with Hermann when they're both stationed in HK, Hermann is still fucking pissed at him (just as Newt is likewise), but he's also legitimately worried about Newt because he doesn't look well by the standards of his body. Hermann ends up eventually asking about it, which only pisses Newt off and honestly brings up a fuckton of trauma for him and also causes Newt to believe that Hermann really is disgusted with him and his body.

☆As the war rages on and rations get tighter and they start working longer and longer hours, Newt loses even more weight which once again causes a sick sort of pleasure in him, despite logically knowing as a biologist that this is in fact very very bad for him and his body. He never intentionally tries to restrict food or lose weight, but he can't help feeling some pleasure at being so much more thin than he's used to. By the time the movie starts, he looks like he actually does in it, where he's soft around the edges, but not fat anymore. Hermann doesn't bring it up both because it's the result of the last days of war and because last time Newt got very upset, but he watches from the sidelines and is very worried about him.

☆When Newt drifts with Hermann, there's a lot of surprise on Newt's end that not only does Hermann like him and not only is Hermann actually in love with, but Hermann actually likes his body in its natural form when it's treated well. In fact, Newt is kind of stunned at how attracted Hermann was to him at their first meeting and the fact that while Hermann would be attracted to him at any weight, Hermann definitely distinctly prefers him fat and healthy and happy. This also causes Newt to realize that Hermann was legitimately concerned about him when he asked about his eating habits, etc, and that maybe the way Hermann treats him is the way he should have been treated all along.

☆Now this obviously doesn't fix everything in one go because a lifetime of trauma doesn't just go away overnight, but going to mandated therapy post war helps, along with a healthy relationship with Hermann, more time to relax, the ending of rationing and the entire world recovering, etc. He eventually gains all of his original weight back and then some and Hermann is so fucking in love with his incredibly handsome sexy fat husband and his wonderful mind and personality. Like don't get me wrong, they're still complete bitches to one another, but they adore each other and work through their insecurities together and it's wonderful.

Once again, I'm writing this at 3 am, so I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense. Also forgive me for the huge block of text, you unlocked A Thing I Go Insane About.

I love your thoughts on and I do think that's one of the ways James could react.

My take is that he loves being pregnant and enjoys the attentiveness it evokes from the people around him - he's portrayed as confident to the point of being arrogant in canon, plus I imagine his parents and Sirius would support him no matter what. This would lead him to not feeling that much shame despite teen (and trans masculine) pregnancy being very taboo. James is shown to be fine with and oftentimes happy to break the rules e.g. he and the other marauders became unregistered animagi for Remus. Overall, I do think he could take it all in stride! If he did feel ashamed, it wouldn't be for long. As implied by the SWM chapter in OOTP, James does care a lot about what others think and will go out of his way to do things that he thinks will make him look cool. Then again, if he cared that much about retaining his 'good reputation' he probably wouldn't have done half the stuff he got up to as a teen.

As for Sirius, I agree with everything you said haha. He's already the black sheep of his family and ran away at 16 (to live with James!) so I imagine he'd be pretty chill with it too. He would launch into protective guard dog mode and would always prowl around James to make sure he and the baby are safe. I see him as a lot less bothered by what others think. So even when the rumors about them reach their peak and the whole school is talking about 'Black knocking up Potter' he'd take it in stride as well. He knows that James' parents are willing to support them financially but I like to think he'd put a lot more effort into finding a stable career, being more mature etc

trans (ftm) and living with his grandma, because his parents didn’t agree with that fact. They tried to erase him from the line of succession, but that wasn’t possible as his parents while his parents would have a daughter and a son, said son died when he was 5

Lynne Lillian Hamson (Theo’s grandma) is a fucking icon and we love her, she took her grandson in and would happily take in the rest of his friends if needed too

When Theo got his Hogwarts letter he send back a polite request (it was only partial pleading) that Vio would be accepted into the same year as him and his request (helped immensely by Lynne sending a threatening letter of her own to Dumbledore, he better or else) was accepted

made friends with Theo through school as Lynne wanted her grandson to get some basic education and didn’t see a reason not to sent him to elementary school

Vio is the most important thing for Theo, even before his own life. They are extremely close (to a point of people questioning if they are a couple) and Theo can be a bit possessive of Vio. Finding out his most important person was being hurt for years did not help that

very much an extrovert and friendly with (almost) everyone, a bit of a mother hen at times

wants to be a Healer later, to help others

fascinated by how magic works and with the idea of making new spells

decently average at classes, his best and favourite subject is arithmancy (once allowed), but charms is a very close second for both

Things of 2023, Part 1, Books.

I enjoyed sharing this last year, so trying to make it a tradition. Managed a few more books this year, and there are some I bought but didn’t have time to read, so I guess they will make it into next year’s list.

So let’s get into it.

Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman: Good Omens.

Not a new one, but quite possibly one of my favourite books of all time, I think this is the third copy I’ve owned over the years. It’s fun, dark, and the characterisation is just wonderful. I always enjoyed Newt’s journey of trying to find who he really is, but I think that is probably true of all the major characters.

The adaptation on Amazon was brilliant, and season 2 has set up the finale nicely, really looking forward to finding out what Terry and Neil came up with.

Ben Aaronovitch: Rivers of London and Moon Over Soho.

Rivers of London was a recommendation from a work friend, was a great call, part supernatural thriller, part police procedural. It’s got plenty of laughs, some proper scares. The main characters are superbly rounded and made me want to read the rest of the series. Managed book two, Moon Over Soho, and it follows on brilliantly. It has plenty of ongoing themes, but with a great new mystery (or two) to deal with. Will definitely be looking at the rest of the series (I think I have another 8 books to go!).

Hiron Ennes: Leech

Wasn’t sure if I should include this one as I haven’t finished it yet, but decided I would definitely have finished it by new year, so counts towards 2023. Very creepy and dark, with a bit of body horror but a really intriguing plot. Can’t wait to find out what happens.

Erin Morgenstern: The Night Circus.

This one didn’t make it into the picture as I’ve lent the book to someone. This was another recommendation and was mind blowing. A centuries long magical battle, which is also a love story. Not just between the protagonists, but people who they meet along the way. The description of the circus is so vivid that it really comes to life. If I get my copy back, this is one I will definitely read again and again.

Neil Gaiman: Sandman (book 1).

I’d obviously heard about this for years, and really enjoyed the Netflix series last year, so decided I should go look at the source material. Definitely worth it. Great stories and wonderful illustration. Another one where I will have to get the rest of the series at some point.

Robin Ince: Bibliomaniac.

I’ve read a few of Robin’s books now, and I love the narrative style. This one is a tour of Britain’s bookshops (the book tour for The Importance of Being Interested that I read last year). Couple of bits that really made me chuckle, one about my home town, quoting another author as “a dull spot which even drink can’t enliven much” . Another was Shakespeare themed pun shop names (a chiropodist called Two Gentlemen of Verruca for example).

Matt Parker: Humble Pi.

Another one that didn’t make the photo, I was lent this one, and have now returned it. This is right up my street, stories of maths and engineering and how they can cause problems if not used properly. Feels like a book version of the Well There’s Your Problem podcast.

Cariad Lloyd: You are not alone.

Feels reductive to call this a spin off from Cariad’s podcast, but that is definitely the starting point. A fantastic book on grief and grieving, interwoven with Cariad’s own story of her father’s death when she was a teenager. I found it so useful to process some of my own emotions around death of family members, but also other forms of grief (loss of relationships). This is an amazing resource, and remember the five steps of grief were never meant for the way they are used today.

Mattie Lubchansky: Boys Weekend.

I came across Mattie as a guest on various podcasts, and their cartoons on The Nib, so when Boys Weekend came out I ordered it immediately. A great graphic novel about navigating old friendships as a trans person, but also giving capitalism an absolute kicking. Loved it, and recently heard there will be a sequel in 2025.. stay tuned.

Julie McDowell: Attack Warning Red!

Another book from one of my favourite podcasts (Atomic Hobo). An amazingly well researched book on Civil Defence in Britain as it came out of the Second World War, and into the potential atomic horrors of the Cold War. A wonderful mix of whimsy and terrifying details.

Jake & Hannah Graf: Becoming Us.

I’ve read quite a few biographies of Trans people at this point, but this is two stories in one, with a proper happy ending. Reading two very different lives, but both with a common thread. A chance encounter leading to a wonderful family. It really is a book about hope.

Munroe Bergdorf: Transitional.

Another Trans life story, but with a really interesting twist, how life is change, and everything is a transitional state in many ways. Wonderfully written with again a huge amount of joy. So many of these books have changed the way I view myself and how I approach the world, this is another one that has moved my mindset again.

Garbage: This is the noise that keeps me awake.

A proper coffee table book. A lovely object, that charts the history of one of my favourite bands. Garbage mean a lot to me, they are one of the groups that helped me realise I could be myself. I love the inclusion of the band cocktail recipes.

James Hetfield: Messengers, The Guitars of James Hetfield.

As a Metallica fan, and a guitarist this is a fantastic book. Some band history, some truly fantastic photography and just some wonderful guitars. Will always love the ESP V with the Hot Rod flames, but seeing an authentic 1958 Gibson Explorer is brilliant.

“Minho, put down that rock and do not throw it at Thomas!” Your voice called sternly from the widow of your hut.

The boy rolled his eyes, dramatically dropping the stone to his side, “Yes, mom.” He called back sarcastically.

Thomas stuck his tongue out at him, “Yeahhh, see? Y/n said you can’t throw the rock at me!”

Mischief sparked in the other boy's eyes, “But I don’t need a rock to kill you.”

His eyes widened, and he didn’t waste a second turning on his heels and sprinting the other way, screaming for you the whole way as Minho tried to tackle him.

Newt shook his head, sitting down in one of the chairs beside you, handing you a cup of tea as he looked out of the window with you, “I bloody swear that they will never stop acting like children.”

You rolled your eyes playfully, gratefully accepting the warm mug, “Boys will be boys.”

He chuckled in return, taking a sip out of his mug and allowing the two of you to fall into a comfortable silence.

When you all had gotten to the new paradise through the flat trans, everybody had begun setting up new lives, rules, and houses. And you had made sure to get one at the top of the hill where you could watch over everything going on.

Where you could watch over your boys.

Before Teresa, you had been the only girl in the ‘Group A’ maze, and had gotten very close to all of the boys, becoming like the mother that everybody had wanted and needed at the time. And that never changed, although you were the same age as some of the boys.

You took care of all of them, quickly becoming a medjack when you discovered that it was the best way to do it.

You would tend to everybody’s wounds, make sure they’ve all eaten and had water, slept enough, helped Frypan in the kitchen whenever you could, and you were always a shoulder to cry on or an ear to talk to.

No matter what, you were always there for them.

They were your boys and you were never going to let anything happen to them. Not anymore. Not after all that everyone was put through and couldn’t protect them from.

A small smile made its way onto your face as you watched Chuck throw a ball to a younger kid that you had all picked up along the way, playing catch with him.

It had been weird at first, seeing people of so many different ages- some even younger than Chuck- who hadn’t been with you all for a long time, but you had all quickly adjusted and even learned to be friends with one another.

As you took the last sip of your almost cold tea, you glanced up at the sky to see the sun begin to set over the vast sky.

With a sigh you turned to Newt, who was already standing up and beginning to make his way out of the hut.

“Sleep well, Newt.” You called before he could fully step out the door.

He turned his head over his shoulder, offering you a kind smile, “You too, love.”

All around you, people were beginning to retire to their beds for the night- even Thomas and Minho, who had at least five different fights since the one you had tried to break up not even a half an hour ago.

You sat at the seat by the window until the last door had been shut for the night, before allowing yourself to leave that position and get yourself ready for a hopefully good night of rest.

But after all you’ve been through, you should’ve known that something like that was never as simple as it should’ve been.

It was the largest Griever you had ever seen.

You heard the sound of its metallic legs hitting the floor of the maze long before you even saw it round the corner, heading straight towards you.

Through your fright and the darkness, you had made the mistake of taking a left turn instead of a right and ended up in a dead end.

Now, you were no runner but you had spent countless hours in the map room, memorizing every detail of the maze that you had never even been into.

Its ugly face was pointed right in your direction, and it walked towards you slowly and menacingly, as if it knew exactly how to scare you even more.

As it inched closer and closer to you, your head whipped around, looking for a way out. But you knew deep down that there was nowhere to go, and you were alone in the maze with it, and all of its friends.

The Griever was so close now that you could reach out your hand to touch it if you wanted to. But your hands stayed glued to your sides, your body stayed stiff as a board.

A clicking sound was made as it reached its disgusting arm out and your breath caught in your throat.

It was an inch away from touching you.

An inch away from death.

It let out a horrible shriek and-

“Y/n! Y/n!” A voice was shouting from above you.

You shot up in your bed with a gasp.

You were drenched in cold sweat that made you shiver from under your covers. Your breathing was staggered as you tried to gulp air into your mouth, as if you had run through the entire maze and back to the Glade without taking a break.

Thomas had quickly backed away from you, letting go of your shoulders as he visibly let out a small sigh of relief.

Minho was standing a couple feet away with clenched knuckles as he rocked back and forth on his heels, something you knew he did when he got nervous.

Newt was next to him, running a hand through his hair while comfortingly patting Chuck's shoulder with the other. The younger of the two had wide eyes and it looked like he was biting his nails.

Frypan was right next to him, seeming unsure about whether to sigh in relief or call for help.

“W-what happened?” Your voice was sore- for what reason, you had no idea- when you finally broke the silence and spoke up after regaining your breath.

Fry quickly hurried to your side and handed you a glass of water you hadn't even noticed that he was holding.

After gulping the liquid down and allowing it to soothe your throat, everybody was yet to answer and you began to panic.

“What is it? What happened? Is everybody okay?” Your voice was rushed as your eyes darted back and forth between everybody.

“You, umm-“ Thomas cut himself off, rubbing the back of his neck, “You were screaming.”

Your mouth snapped shut as you looked at him, waiting for him to crack a smile and tell you he was joking and this was all a stupid prank that Minho came up with and Chuck got overly enthusiastic about.

But he didn’t, and everybody else seemed to become increasingly more worried.

“Did I wake everybody up?” You whispered out in horror when you realized that he wasn’t kidding.

“Well not everybody…” Chuck piped up, rubbing his left arm up and down with his right hand.

You groaned, throwing your face into your hands as you were sure that your cheeks began to turn red.

“Hey, hey,” Newt said gently, taking a seat beside you on your bed, “It’s okay, nobody’s mad at you.”

“But everybody needed rest and I woke them up because of a stupid-“ You cut yourself off with wide eyes when you realized that you almost told them why you had screamed.

You were the one supposed to be worrying about and taking care of them, not the other way around.

“Nightmare?” Minho finished quietly, it was actually the quietest you had ever seen him in a long time.

The answer wasn’t needed to be vocalized for them to know.

“We all get nightmares.” Newt began rubbing your arm comfortingly as he spoke, “It’s what reminds us that we’re human after everything we’ve been through.”

Slowly, the others had made their way closer to the two of you, ending with them all sitting on one part of your bed, all facing you.

“It’s okay to have nightmares,” Frypan spoke up in a whisper, “It doesn’t make us any less strong than we are.”

“It’s also okay to let us take care of you sometimes, you always worry about us, but let us worry about you for once.” The British boy spoke again.

Tears had begun to fill your eyes as you looked over all of their faces. The faces of your boys.

You let out a watery chuckle, “When did you all become so wise?”

They all grinned, “We’ve been watching you, of course.” Minho said jokingly, easily sliding back into his normal self.

Chuck crawled across the bed and gave you one of his famous hugs, which you gladly returned with a signature strong and safe-feeling one of your own.

“Thank you.” You whispered, making eye contact with each and every one of them as you spoke.

“No need to thank us.” Thomas smiled a little, reaching out and shaking your foot slightly.

I belive the fundermental flaw in this paper is to assume that there ARE straight, cis and allo wizards.

Magic is and always had been a code for queerness (eg. Merlin (bbc), the mcu (Loki, scarlet witch, doctor strange...), Greek myths (the gods and their decendents being gay), any Disney movie ever(sleeping beauty, snow white, aladin).

So, based on this thesis, we would have to assume that everyone in Hogwarts is queer and there is more than enough evidence for this.

On the Origin of Gayness – Are All Gryffindors Actually Gay?

(another pseudo-scientific paper by cat)

Abstract

This paper examines the question of Homosexuality in the Gryffindor House, drawing from previous research as well as collected samples and interviews with several acclaimed marauders scholars, using mixed methods. Much uncertainty still exists around the relationship between Gayness and Gryffindor, so in this paper I will once again commit to the bit and evaluate scientific scholarship on tumbler dot com for your education and entertainment.

Introduction

This research was prompted by my esteemed colleague and collaborator @lynxindisguise who revolutionised the scientific community by asking “what if gryffindor is just where you go if you’re gay [?]” (lynxindisguise 2024), daring scholars to “name a straight gryffindor” (ibid). Several highly esteemed scholars such as @plecotusauritus (2024) and @kaleidoscopexsighs (2024) agree with lynxindisguise on her thesis, @werewolfenthusiast (2024) even went so far as to comment that this "would explain a lot" while acclaimed marauders scholar @spindrifters is asking lynxindisguise to “pls”, not elaborating further what they want lynxindisguise to “pls” do, leaving the reader with more questions that this paper hopes to answer.

This paper systematically reviews the data gathered from the popular blogging website tumblr.com on this topic, aiming to provide more insight and clarity on the question of what I have coined “Gryffindor Gayness”.

The overall structure of the paper takes the form of two parts: the main part is 1 The Gryffindor Ideology, Theses on Gryffindor, focusing on the question of Gryffindor Gayness, providing an in-depth analysis and discussion of Gryffindor Gayness. Part 2 Can the Slytherins be Gay? can be seen as a call to action for other Hogwartian Sexuality scholars to consider doing research in this promising field.

1. The Gryffindor Ideology, Theses on Gryffindor

1.1 The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Gryffindor

This section of the paper aims to give a quick overview of the history of Gryffindor Gayness. The term “Gryffindor” tends to be used almost synonymous with “Serving Cunt”, which can be seen as synonymous for “Gay”.

To answer the question “What the hell is a Gryffindor?”, readers are encouraged to also familiarize themselves with previous works on this topic (cf. The Sorting Hat 1997, 2000, 2003; The Scarf of Sexual Preference 2009, 2010, 2012).

The Sorting Hat, leading expert in all things Gryffindor, has done extensive research in various closets, stating “I’m the Hogwarts Sorting Hat, And I can cap them all” (The Sorting Hat 1997), and “You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve and chivalry, Set Gryffindors apart” (ibid).

To fully understand this, additional context of the song is important to note: whenever the Sorting Hat says brave or chivalrous, or daring, most scholars agree that these can be read as synonyms for “gay”, “homosexual” and “serving cunt” respectively. With this alternative reading of the Sorting Hat’s song, Gryffindor Gayness starts to make more sense, but in their later work, the Sorting Hat elaborates more on this, referring to Godric Gryffindor as “the bravest [the gayest]” (The Sorting Hat 2000).

@wanderingdonut (2024), a certified expert on vibes of all stripes shared insightful and important scholarship on the inherently homosexual symbolism of swords, and was the first scholar to draw the connection between the sword of Godric Gryffindor and Homosexuality, stating:

“as everyone knows, swords are the gayest accessory (the point is designed to penetrate? Please. And we all know everyone is gay for a woman with a sword), so really, it was godric who set everyone up for gayness.”

Further proving that Homosexuality has been connected to the House of Gryffindor from the beginning, as was intended by its founder. Wanderingdonut (2024) then goes on to say:

“There is nothing gayer than being bonked on the head with gayness at a deeply inconvenient time and Godric wants that for all his children”,

again stating explicit intent of homosexuality by the founding daddy of Gryffindor house, Godric Gryffindor.

Marauders scholar @fruityindividual also indirectly refers to Godric Gryffindor’s intentional mandate of homosexuality by describing the accommodations for Gryffindor students as having “cosy beds” and forcing proximity, thus leading to Gryffindor Gayness.

1.2 Gryffindor Trouble: Gayness and the Subversion of Identity

In this chapter I will give some examples for Gryffindor Gayness, illustrating why the initial assumption that all Gryffindors are Gay (cf. lynxindisguise 2024) is such an important, one could almost say revolutionary addition to this field of science.

1.2.1 The Weasley Family

The Weasley Family are one of the most prominent Gay/Gryffindor families, making them ideal subjects for this study.

Molly and Arthur Weasley have both been known to be into swinging, often asking couples to be their third and using rubber ducks in many creative ways, setting a good example for their many gay children (cf. polaroidcats 2024).

Fred and George Weasley are both known to have dated Lee Jordan at the same time, “Lee thought he was only dating one of them but forgot which one and was not brave enough to ask” (polaroidcats 2024), which makes Fred and George both perfect examples of that mischievous flavor of Gryffindor Gayness the Weasley family seems to be known for.

However one of the most prominent examples for Gryffindor Gayness in the Weasley family is the youngest child, Ginevra (“Ginny”) Weasley.

Wanderingdonut (2024) claims that “everyone is gay for a woman with a sword. Particularly if it’s Ginny Weasley with a sword”, calling her a “lesbian queen”. Similarly, plecotusauritus (2024) states that “Ginny had a new girlfriend every two weeks but it never got mentioned since it wasnt [sic!] important part of Harry's journey”, introducing not only Ginny’s tendency to fall into her parents’ promisingly promiscuous footsteps, but also highlighting an important aspect of her relationship with Harry James Potter.

@kaaaaaaarf (2024) elaborates further on this idea of compulsory heteronormativity in relation to Ginny’s relationships:

“That girl [Ginny] is a lesbian and I will not be convinced otherwise. I think half the reason her and Harry were drawn to each other is because they recognized (even subconciously) that the other gave off queer vibes, and therefore was a safe person to be with in a heteronormative society. I truly believe that eventually she met a woman and fell in love”

The Homosexuality of the Weasley family is well-documented and widely accepted among scholars of the field. One more example for this can be found in the next section of this paper, discussing the compulsory heteronormative tendencies of certain Gryffindors.

1.2.2 The Golden Trio and Compulsory Heteronormativity

In this section I will explore the parallels between Harry and Ginny’s relationship and Hermione and Ron’s relationship that I have found in my research.

Plecotusauritus (2024) raises the point of “Ron having a major crush on Krum” and elaborates that Ron eventually decides “that he was actually jealous of Hermione and not Krum, and commiting to the bit so hard they end up married (but will eventually find a way for them both to act on their queer tendencies)”, bringing up the idea of compulsory heteronormativity.

This sentiment is mirrored in kaaaaaaarf’s (2024) description of Harry and Ginny’s relationship, where the scholar states that “when [Ginny] finally talked to Harry about it [falling in love with a woman] he wasn't really upset at all. This sent him on his own spiral, realizing that he might not be as straight as he thought he was...”

When asked about favorite Gay Gryffindor moments, scholar lynxindisguise (2024) replied with: “harry being unable to talk about cedric or sirius without mentioning them handsoming [sic!] handsomely down the stairs”.

Likewise, the scholar kaaaaaaarf (2024) replied to the same question as follows:

“I think every time Harry made some sort of comment about how attractive other men were/his obsession with Draco. No straight person is that obsessed with their same sex arch enemy, I'm sorry.”

Scholar @greengrug (2024) also refers to Harry’s obsession with Draco Malfoy, stating that he “takes a permanent residence in the love-to-hate you part of the brain. Two powerful emotions combined to create an unwavering obsession that can't be forgotten.”

Greengrug (ibid) also points out the inherent heteronormativity of the love triangle between Harry James Potter, Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory, elaborating on Harry’s feelings of jealousy and mourning leading him to participate in the classic comphet ritual of kissing your dead lover’s ex girlfriend next to his picture:

“Harry is jealous of Cho being with Cedric! Why else would he kiss her next to his picture next year? Anyone else can see how horridly inappropriate that is. Clearly only a mourning gryffingay could be driven to that point.” (ibid).

1.2.3 The Marauders

Before evaluating the individual Gayness of each member of the friend group known as “the Marauders” (see also my previous work on their crying practises, polaroidcats 2023), a common thread in the gayness of all four members is, as marauders scholar fruityindividual puts it “the scantily-clad special alone times in the sheesh shed”, raising the important question of where the wizard’s clothes go when they change from their animagus form back to their human forms, an area that has been overlooked by science thus far. There is little to be known about it, but it can be assumed that most time any of the marauders has spent in the “sheesh shed”, as the expert calls it, must have been spent naked. Further research on this topic is encouraged.

1.2.3.1 Sirius Black

The added context of Gryffindor Gayness allows for a much more interesting reading of Sirius Black being sorted into Gryffindor. Acclaimed Sirius Black expert plecotusauritus (2024) states that “deep down his [Sirius’] parents knew that this might happen. It was still bit of a shock to this notably straight family.”, referencing the Black family tradition of Slytherin Super Straightness.

1.2.3.2 Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is one of the most interesting examples for Gryffindor Gayness, proving simultaneously that being Gay is and is not a choice. According to lynxindisguise (2024), Remus “chose gryffindor because he immediately fell in love with sirius on the train and then felt bad when he saw him get sorted into gryffindor and look scared”, proving that being gay is a choice. In my own previous research, I have stated that “Neville’s first crush was Remus Lupin” (polaroidcats 2024), to which spindrifters (2024) has since added the important addition that “remus lupin was also dean thomas's gay awakening”, stating that “there is canon evidence for this across like 3 books”, proving once and for all that being gay is not a choice.

1.2.3.3 James Potter

James Potter is another fascinating example of Gryffindor Gayness, because he was in what the scholars call a “bi4bi” relationship with Lily Evans, another Gryffindor Gay, proving that Gryffindor Gayness is inclusive of Bisexuality and possibly also other queer sexualities. Further research on this topic would be necessary to find a definitive list of sexual orientations that can be subsumed under Gryffindor Gayness, but James Potter and Lily Evans are probably most if not all of them at the same time.

1.2.3.4 Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew is still the nastiest skank bitch I have ever met, I do not trust him and he is a fugly slut. He was also in love with James and fandom would be all over that Gryffindor Gayness if Peter hadn’t been portrayed as unattractive, but that is a different topic for another paper.

1.3 Gryffindor Realism

This chapter illustrated different examples of Gryffindor Gayness across various generations and genders. There are countless more examples that I encourage scholars to explore. One could argue that there are also straight Gryffindors, but one would be wrong, all Gryffindors are gay. The last section of this paper examines the question of why some non-Gryffindors are also (seemingly) gay and provides further questions for future researchers to consider.

2. Can the Slytherins Be Gay?

The question of why there are also non-Gryffindors who are gay can be answered by referring readers to section 1.2.2 The Golden Trio and Compulsory Heteronormativity. Children are sorted into these houses at eleven years old, so some children might develop their Homosexual tendencies only later in life, or they might try and hide them from the sorting hat. Black family scholar plecotusauritus (2024) also raises the important point of Bellatrix Lestrange (née Black) threatening the Sorting Hat so bad that she got sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor.

3 Conclusion

Previous studies of Hogwartian Sexualities have failed to identify the precise reasoning for students of other houses also showing signs of Gayness. In this article I hope to help close that research gap by focusing on Gryffindor Gayness, but further research into Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw Sexualities would be necessary for a more systematic approach. With more time and funding, I hope to address these issues in future research.

Future research questions that could be asked include “Why was Gilderoy Lockhardt in Ravenclaw?”, “Who are the Slytherin Super Straights?” and “What the hell is a Hufflepuff?”.

The most obvious findings to emerge from this research project are the confirmation of Gryffindor Gayness in all members of the Weasley family, the Marauders and the Golden Trio, as well as other Gryffindors, and the exploration of compulsory heteronormativity as a possible explanation for Non-Gryffindor Gayness, as well as atypical Gryffindor behaviour. Considerably more work will need to be done to determine the precise circumstances of phenomena such as Slytherin Super Straights, Hufflepolyamory and Ravenclaw Aces, and I hope to be able to do research on these soon.

WARNINGS: Inappropriate language, gender queer distress, struggling to come out to people, one sarcastic sex joke from Minho, I've tried my hardest to figure out how to write this so I'm sorry if this is bad - sorry.

You've always felt out of place in the Glade.

At first, you figured it was just because you're in the middle of a giant changing Maze without any knowledge of who you are - which would make sense.

But as you watched the other Gladers adapt and accept themselves and their situations; you didn't.

You always felt strange in your body, and you hated it when people referred to you in any way, shape or form. A lot of the boys started thinking you were just shy and didn't want to be involved. But, in reality, the internal cringing that takes place whenever anyone ever talks about you is enough to knock you physically sick.

It took you a long time to figure things out, and a slightly awkward drunken conversation with Alby.

Despite Gally's Special Brew making your brain fuzzy, you still remembering the conversation embarrassingly well.

But thank God it was with Alby.

Alby is a harsh leader and keeps his men on a tight leash, but he also deeply cares about you all. So, when he came up to you, asking if you were okay and you immediately burst into tears, he was beyond experienced enough to deal with it.

It did take him back for a second, though.

Alby has dealt with a lot of emotional situations. From Minho's stress-induced mental breakdowns behind closed doors to Newt's gay crisis - he's witnessed it all. He's dealt with it all.

It was a strange realisation, and you didn't expect Alby to be the one to point it out, but you became aware of your gender identity.

It was like something clicked.

Alby was the first person you asked to refer to you as they.

And he was the only person for a while. You became close because if that.

Then he accidentally called you they in front of Minho. You panicked but Minho didn't care.

He shrugged it off but started also referring to you as they.

Slowly, you started to tell more Gladers, and all of them were pretty accepting.

You begin to realise that they just don't care. Everyone has bigger things to care about. Sure, the drunk philosophy conversations around a Bonfire about sex, love and gender are interesting. But they don't actually mean anything to the boys. They have far too much on their plates for that to be at the forefront of their concerns.

Even the less accepting boys don't really care. There's a couple of confusing looks or sparky questions, but that's it. Which sucks, but apart from that, everyone is very accepting.

But that doesn't make you any less scared of someone not being accepting.

And that specific person is Newt.

Which is ridiculous.

And you know it's ridiculous.

Newt is easily one of the most accepting person in the Glade, and it's pretty much an open secret that he doesn't like women. If anything, he's the person to go to for any identity or LGBTQ+ issues.

Which is why it would hurt so much if he didn't accept you.

You're only really out to a few people, but it feels like everyone. But despite people's views, they've all agreed to keep it to themselves until you gain the courage to tell everyone. And the next step is telling Newt.

It really doesn't help that you have a small crush on the boy.

Small.

Oh, so small.

Teeny-weeny, you could say.

You are a liar.

You're borderline infatuated.

Deep down, you know Newt will accept you.

But what if he doesn't?

What if you catch him on a bad day? And he laughs at you or tells you to piss off?

The thought is enough to send waves of anxiety through you.

"It's really not a big deal, dude," Minho hums from next to you in his hammock. You've, for some reason, been hanging around the Keeper since Alby exposed you. He's surprisingly good at being a comfort.

Probably from the traumas of the Maze and dealing with stressed Runners.

"It's a big deal to me," you mumble, legs crossed as you draw lines in the dried dirt in the floor in front of you.

The sticks holding Minho up creak as he turns to lie on his side. The other boys are talking around the main area of the Glade, where they just hang out after a hard day's work. Minho often calls it an early night because he doesn't have time for the petty stuff in the Glade.

Which obviously means he has to deal with you and your problems instead.

"Dude, he's not gonna give a shuck. You're buggin' out for no damn reason. Newt's one cool shank, and you know that. Just tell him. Half of us know anyway, and it's only a matter of time before Alby slips up again."

That is a daunting thought.

"But what if he-?"

"What if he doesn't accept me? What if he doesn't like me back? What if he doesn't want to make sweet, sweet love to me all night long because I changed some funny little words about myself?" You look over your shoulder, glaring at the boy as he mocks you. He grins, sitting up in his hammock and attempting to adjust himself.

He almost slips, which is kind of funny.

"Slim it, shank - I'm tellin' ya. It'll be all good. Just... tell him when you're good and ready, if ever." You let out a huff as Minho tries to drop the sarcasm and attempts to be genuine. "Though, I'm am gettin' shuckin' sick of hearing about it, so if you could do it sooner rather than later; it would be appreciated."

You pull your lips into a thin line, grimacing at the boy. "I hate you, you know?"

"Nah," he flops back down. "You love me, really. Now, either shuck off and get some sleep or go get your man - keep me out of it."

You grumble to yourself, walking away and over to your hammock. Well, you get about halfway there when you slow down to look at Newt.

He's casually leaning against a plot holding up a torch, laughing along with Frypan and another boy whose name you can't place. His golden locks are illuminated by the flame and his cool but casual stance makes your heart melt.

You have to tell him.

You want to tell him.

"Screw it," you change your course of direction and start marching over to him. Your stomach is a bundle of knots and you feel like you've just woken up from a rough night of drinking.

But you keep going.

Until you stop dead in your tracks.

God, he's pretty.

He's pretty and kind, and kind of nihilistic, and he's probably the most level-headed person in this place.

How were you ever meant to stand a chance?

So, obviously, your nerves buckle and you decide better.

Nope. You're not doing this.

"(Y/N)?" Newt's accent stops you mid-escape, forcing you to awkwardly spin back around to face him.

"Hey," the word comes out strained as you offer an awkward wave.

"Hey, haven't really seen you about recently," he stands up straight, causally slipping his hands into his pockets. "You a'ight?"

His voice, his hair, his dark eyes - everything about him makes you melt.

No wonder Minho's sick of hearing about this shit.

"Y-" your voice breaks, and you have to clear your throat to hide it, "Yeah, I'm good."

He gives you a nod before vaguely gesturing towards his companions. "You wanna join? Fry managed to get his hands on an early batch of Gally's mystery recipe."

"Nah, I'm good, thanks," you go to leave again, but stop yourself.

You've got to get this over with.

"Actually," you clearly your throat again, "can I, uh, can I talk to you, for a second?"

Newt's eyebrows raise slightly. "Yeah, sure - 'course."

You nod for him to follow you, and he does. You walk to the edge of the Deadheads, where you stop and look at him.

"So, uh..." You very quickly trail off.

Where to start?

Okay, so, I really like you and also I don't fit the gender-binary. Okay, bye.

Yeah, don't think that'll work.

"Are you okay?" He steps closer to you. "You've been distant for the last few weeks - I'm starting to get worried."

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just have to tell you a couple of things." You glance at the floor before your eyes flickering back up.

"Okay." You hesitate and he continues. "You know you cab tell me anything, right?"

"Yeah, I know... okay, so uh, basically... Okay. I don't identify as male or female, and I go by they/them pronouns - a-and I would appreciate it if you respected... that."

You look him in the eye and he just tilts his head.

"You wanna used they/them?"

"Yep."

"Okay, cool. They/them it is then."

You blink. Once. Twice. And again.

"What?" He asks. "What is it?"

"You're fine with that?"

He smirks, his eyebrows furrowing, amusement written across his face. "Yeah? Why wouldn't I be?"

"Well... I just... sorry, I've been buggin' over it."

"Really? C'mon, (Y/N), you know I ain't gonna judge ya."

"Yeah, I know, I was just being dumb."

"Yeah, you were," he rocks on his heels for a second. "Wait, what was the other thing?"

"Huh?"

"You said you had two things to tell me?"

Honestly, the relief that you'd experienced made you completely forget that you're in love with this man.

"Oh, right, yeah, uh... okay, you might actually judge me for this one." You try to laugh it off but he seems concerned more than anything. "I kinda, maybe... like you?" You didn't mean for it to be a question, but that's what it is now.

His expression falters at this.

"W-what?" He splutters out.

Newt isn't sure if he heard you correctly. He's never told anyone, but he's actually had a crush on you since you showed up in the Box. He likes your work ethic and the way you treat people.

So, you'll have to forgive him when his words catch in his throat.

"Ithinkimaybesortahaveamassivecrushonyou."

He blinks. "Okay, one more time, you said that way too fast."

"I really like you, Newt - I have a crush on you."

You're not sure what you expected, but as Newt starts to smile, that familiar feelings of butterflies fills your stomach.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," he grins.

"Thank God for that," he scoffs, "I thought you were gonna tell me you're dying or some klunk."

You snort at this, shaking your head. "Nope, not dying."

"Good. Couldn't have my partner dying on me, could I?"

Your eyes widen. No... surely not.

"Partner?"

"Yeah, like a couple," he pauses. "That's the right word... right?"

"...You wanna be a couple?"

"Yep," he pops the p, "believe it or not; I like you too."

"You do?"

"Yeah," he steps forward, standing a few inches away from you. "I do." His eyes fall to your lips. "Can I kiss you?"

You nod, leaning in, your noses brush before your lips meet. It's a quick peck, and when you pull apart, he's grinning like an idiot.

"I think we make a pretty good couple, don't you?" He kisses the end of your nose and you roll your eyes.

This has taken me embarrassingly long to get through, so I apologise.

"Couldn't agree more."

And the next ones are hard, since that's like. The only ship I actively read fics of now. In previous fandoms, I always had like a handful of fics to fall back on, but now...

I do like Anathema and Newt though.

... Okay, hear me out. This is where the ship dilemma I mentioned comes in. Wait actually no, i haven't mentioned it yet. I mean i have, but in the next question. I'm jumping from point to point. But anyway, the ship dilemma is the following: what even COUNTS as a ship? Because I really like this non-GO "pairing" but not romantically. In a more "they're meant for each other whether they like it or not — and they don't. They're doomed to be put in awful funny situations and make a fucking mess and blame the other and they're great friends! but also enemies" way. Honestly, the thing stopping me is that they're mcytbers lmao. Except they're not, since I couldn't care less about them irl. It's just the characters they play that make me go *chef's kiss*. If you guessed Grian and Scar. Yeah. Not Hermitcraft though. The Life series. They make each other miserable whenever they're paired up and it's hilarious. Wouldn't read a fic though.

First ship ever:

Oh this is awfully hard. You have no idea how hard this is. I don't know how to even define ship here (as you can see, this is the ship dilemma actually mentioned before). Cause I liked Pucca and Garu, but I also acknowledged Woody and Buzz, I also liked Anastasia and the baker, and I may have imagined something about Coop and Mr Kat (not even enemies to lovers, just a specific situation i can still remember to this day — and I'll just note down that Mr Kat is an alien who looks like a cat, Not a cat), etc etc. It's really fucking hard to say only one. But if i focus on me Aware of shipping... Fuck, probably some creepypasta ship. Jane and Jeff? I didn't know she was a lesbian back then. But i may still be off by a long shot.

20,000 Species of Bees. It was very good. And ouch. It's about an 8 y.o. trans girl figuring herself out and oof. If you don't like open endings, don't watch it. It was 2h long and honestly? I realized it was long while watching it, but not that long!

Currently reading:

I had actually meant to re-read Good Omens today, but didn't take my book with me. But i didn't, so nothing? But the last thing I read was Boethius' On the Consolation of Philosophy and I have to re-read some passages for a project so... I'll count that.

Currently consuming:

Air, barely (mask in a bus — not much air to consume (I SWEAR THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I'VE WRITTEN THAT SENTENCE WHAT THE HELL. WHY DO I FEEL LIKE I'VE WRITTEN THAT PHRASE BEFORE)). Unless this is a general "consuming", in which case, I'm listening to the song i mentioned before (that was my last listened song before i saw this, and it made me want to listen to it again. But now the song just switched (and now nothing again, woops)).

Currently craving:

Honestly, literally any food whatsoever. I'm hungry and i won't be home for at least another hour and a half. (An hour, now. Like I said, jumping around from point to point)
