Okay, I've made enough "blease knit gauge swatches. Swatchless projects killedy family" posts. This post is an informational post a out gauge swatches. It will mainly be written in knitting terms because that is my main craft but it applies to crochet too. Even if you're an experienced crafter, you might learn something from this post. I talk about different reasons to make a swatch and some reasons a swatch might lie to you.

What is gauge?

Gauge is the size of your stitches, ie how wide and tall they are. It can be affected by the way you hold the yarn, your tension, and your needle/hook size. In knitting the style you knit can affect this, with the tendency being that English style is usually, but not always, tighter than continental. When I went from knitting English style to knitting Norwegian style, my gauge drastically changed to be much looser.

What is a gauge swatch?

A gauge swatch is a small piece of work that you use to measure your stitches per inch and rows per inch gauge. "Standard" gauge swatches are 4in/10cm squares, but often you'll see different sizes, especially for lace patterns that have you test knitting a certain chart or stitch

Why do we make gauge swatches?

We make gauge swatches to check if our gauge is the same as the pattern designer's gauge. Because you want your gauge to be the same as the pattern designer's so you know your size XL sweater will actually be size XL or your six foot in diameter shawl will actually be six feet across. Or that your airy and beautiful lace will actually be airy and beautiful and not too dense or too loose.

We also might swatch if we are substituting yarns. For example, a blocked lace swatch of wool will have different dimensions than a blocked lace swatch of pure silk because silk is less stretchy than wool. So if you are substituting fibers, you want to know that you'll like the finished item and might swatch a bit of the pattern before starting in earnest so you don't waste your time making something you'll be dissatisfied with.

There's also some differences between yarns of the same fiber and same weight. Some lace weight yarn is categorized as lace weight while being 600 yds per 100g, and some lace weight yarn is 800 yds or 1000 yds per 100g. So you should knit a swatch when substituting yarn even if they are the same fiber and weight if they are different yardage per gram ratios.

Do I always need to make a gauge swatch?

I talk a lot about the importance of gauge swatches but the honest answer is no, you do not always need to make a gauge swatch. If you are making something that doesn't require a certain size or airiness of pattern, like a bag or a simple scarf, you don't need to do a gauge swatch.

How do I make a gauge swatch?

Most patterns have a simple gauge listed, such as 22 stitches by 18 rows is 4in/10cm square in stockinette. However, some patterns have an "in pattern" gauge swatch or a separate pattern/chart for their swatch. So you cast on however many stitches (I often cast on a few more than the swatch calls for, but you don't have to), and knit that many rows in whatever pattern is specifed. If it's stockinette, knit stockinette. If it's "in pattern," locate the repeating part of the pattern and knit the designated amount of rows. If there is a separate pattern/chart for the swatch, knit as directed. Bind off. Don't measure on the needle, it will lie to you.

Then, you want to treat the swatch how you'll treat the finished object. If you're not going to block the finished object, measure it as is. But if you're going to block the finished object (and most things you should tbh blocking hides so many sins), you get the swatch wet, pin it out to shape, and then leave it to dry.

THEN! And nobody talks about this step for some reason and it's been the reason swatches lied to me in the past. Unpin it and let it rest. Different people give different time amounts for this resting. I'd let it rest at least three hours but some people recommend up to a week. The reason for this resting period is that many yarns, especially wool and other animal fibers, have elasticity to them. They'll rebound back a bit. Cotton and linen will have less rebound than things like wool. I'm not 100% sure where acrylic falls on that scale since I hate the texture of most acrylics.

OK I made and blocked the swatch and let it rest, what do I do now?

Now you measure! Does your stitches/rows ratio match up with the pattern designer's? Compare your gauge to the listed gauge. If it is different, you need to adjust needle/hook sizes. If your swatch is larger than the given measurements, your gauge is too loose and you need to go down one (or several) needle/hook sizes. If your swatch is smaller, your gauge is too tight and you need to go up one (or more) needle/hook sizes. At this point you can say "it's probably just one size up/down" and start your project, or you can repeat the entire swatch process. If unsure, repeat.

That's cool, can we see an example?

Sure! Here are two swatches I have pinned out.

I didn't follow my own advice about swatching and just started the Sapphira Lace Shawl on the recommended size 4 needles, but I got all the way through the first repeat of the body chart and then frogged the whole thing because my gauge was so loose you couldn't even see the pattern.

The Sapphira Lace Shawl has a separate pattern just for the gauge swatch and says "gauge is not important, swatch in lace pattern and use comfortable needle size to achieve airy lace that is not too holey." Too holey means that the stitches and yarn overs are so loose you cannot properly make out the pattern at all. That's what happened when I used size 4 needles.

The swatches you see here were knitted on size 2 (top) and 3 (bottom) needles. I knitted the bottom swatch first but was unsure if I liked the result so I went down another needle size and knitted a second swatch.

You'll notice the size 2 swatch is smaller and it's easier to make out the design. The stitches are smaller and denser, so the places where decreases and plain knit stitches are grouped together are easier to see. Versus the size 3 swatch where the stitches are looser and it's a bit harder to make out the design, though not impossible. On size four needled my stitches were so loose you couldn't really make out the design at all. With these swatches pinned out, I personally like the size 2 swatch better. However! That may change once I let the swatches rest for a while!

This yarn is an alpaca/silk mix. Alpaca is known for stretching out and not holding its shape. It's not ideal for lace. Silk is very good at holding its shape, but not very stretchy. I'm hoping together they make an okay yarn for lace because separately neither is my preference for lace. It was what I had on hand that was dyeable. Alpaca has some elasticity so it will spring back once I unpin it and let it rest. At that point, I may like the size 3 swatch better. I won't know until I get there.

I'll try to remember to post pictures of the rested swatches tomorrow to show if there's any difference. I might work up another swatch on size 4 needles to show what "too holey" looks like but that's more of a "how to knit lace" educational swatch than a "how to knit swatches" educational swatch so I might not bother.

he thinks your cooking is the best and won't eat anything else, luckily that's your hobby so it doesn't feel like a chore.

always praises you for how well you cook, he expresses his contentment in such an exaggerated way just to show that's he's really appreciative of your efforts!

thanks you after each meal and asks you if you can also cook him lunchbox. he's practically begging you, so you can't say no<3 but of course if you refuse he won't force you, he'll insist every time he sees you and will get a bit pouty for a while but that's about it.

taiju is just really pleased and satisfied by his omega.

you always drop by draken's work place whenever it's lunchtime to give him his homemade meal.

you absolutely love plants, always taking a look at every flower shop you see and not resisting the urge to bring some to your house.

the first time chifuyu bought you flowers was because he knew omegas liked sweet and soft smells. he was courting you and chose his gift diligently. however he didn't expect you'd be this overjoyed.

then he learnt about your absolute love for plants and that was it. he's now bringing you flowers every time he goes out, either a big bouquet of roses, tiny succulents, a bunches of dried flowers or vases that suit your tastes.

he's more than happy to do so and even helps you place them around the house, giving you his well appreciated opinion.

he will also try and learn the name of plants and flowers, especially your favourites, so he can hold a conversation about your favourite topic!

it's soo calming to takemichi, he loves it.

I need to make a more detailed idea of a feral boyfriend so work with me plz

You two swap jackets in the winter time so you guys always have a piece of each other when you two are busy and aren't able to see each other

Spy

-I know a running joke is that Spy is a smelly French asshole, but I really do think that he wears some of the nicest smelling cologne out there. Expensive af colonge, but damn, it's addicting

-Smarty pants. Not just anyone can be a spy, it takes quite a bit of intellect for it. And not to mentions he knows multiple languages? Love it, even if I hate the French language with a burning passion

-Him having a good taste in fashion? He's gotta know what he's doing by wearing suits all the time. Not only does he look fresh af, but people always look so good in a suit, especially when it fits them. But please also picture him dressed in a more romantic goth aesthetic plz, okay I'll stop now

-Is good at paying attention to even the littlest of details about his partners. Even if you're trying to be cryptic or subtle about things, he'll always find out. He's def a protective type too

a tip for people with trichotillomania: if youre looking for an alternate activity to replace hair pulling, you should consider getting into textile art, something like weaving - especially forms of weaving that you can do anywhere:

crochet

lacemaking (crochet, but smaller)

hand weaving

weaving on a hand loom

ive been struggling with trich for a long time and none of the many alternate activities and stim toys ive tried have helped or stuck for long - but weaving has been a huge game changer for me because by weaving i'm giving myself the "pulling" sensation that i'm seeking without pain or shame, PLUS i get the satisfaction of having a lovely art piece at the end!

despite what the internet will tell you, weaving is actually very cheap and easy to pick up if youre physically able to do it, have access to some kind of yarn, thread, paper, or grass, and if youre willing to make mistakes.

this fall/winter im planning on making a guide on how to get started weaving for beginners, and i'll post it on here when i do. in the meantime feel free to send me questions and i'll respond when i can :)

I LOVE MATCHMAKING AN ALREADY TOGETHER COUPLE it’s soooo cute, especially when it’s kids… they just want their silly oblivious adult to be happy (they don’t know he already is). Kon getting to see Tim mentoring a bunch of kids. Reminiscing about their yj days. Tim shocking them by just how many heroes he’s familiar with who respect him. CUTE!!!

YEAH!!! bc like, tim is just by nature an intensely private guy. he hasnt mentioned that hes happily married bc why would he. it isnt relevant hes just here to train these guys in nonpowered combat and gadgetry and such and to mentor them on missions at their skill level, etc. his personal life is on a need to know basis by default. (incidentally, he's also a great listener because he's such a steel trap. he's got like 5 different angles on whatever teenage drama is going on in their lives. he will not be intervening unless as a last resort. why would he.) he's very personable and good with them (yeah he's awkward yeah he puts his foot in his mouth now and then yeah he goes how do you do fellow kids. but like. hes a people person and they love him) but he just doesnt really talk about himself much.

and YEAH kon loves to see it <3 i also really love to think about kon mentoring a lil baby telekinetic in how to use and exercise their powers. hes teaching them to crochet and then knit and slowly expanding the number of moving pieces they can control at once. some of tim's kids are at least a little jealous because supernova is soooo cool but also like theyre Fiercely defensive of tim. thats THEIR scrungly but hypercompetent weird guy. HES REALLY COOL TOO OKAY. ignore that he just said "get pwned" after defeating 4 of them at once at a spar. he didnt say that. they dont know what you mean.

but YEAH overall its just cute :> good vibes. a romcom but like theyre already married. the comedy is the kids discovering that they are in fact already married. they confront tim one day like tim. we KNOW you have a crush on mr. kon-el!!! and tim's like. completely flabbergasted. you think i What??? and theyre like. WE CAN TELL, TIM. YOURE NOT SLICK. and tim just stares at them for a minute

and then he calls kon over (just says "hey, kon, can you c'mere for a second?" and supernova just shows up?!?! like hes just listening for tim's voice calling for him all the time????!?!?) and goes "okay. can you guys please repeat your conclusions to kon for me?"

and theyre like. tim are you asking us to tell him you have a crush on him for you. thats kind of pathetic tim we're seventeen

and kon's just like. wait. wait wait wait. turns to tim with a 1000 megawatt grin. SUNSHINE... YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON ME? AWWWW.

tim: yeah i mean i think it's slightly more serious than that, given that i, oh, i don't know, married you two years ago? kon: AWW.... hehe!!! the kids: YOU WHAT?!?!?!?!? tim: now! i know for a fact i've told you all to do your due diligence on research, background checking, and investigation before jumping to conclusions, so this makes for a great case study and a fantastic learning opportunity--

- if able go on a walk and enjoy the outdoors doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy it could literally just be a walk around the block

- if you can’t go on a walk either sit outside for a bit or just open some windows for some fresh air

- play farming simulator (you think I’m joking but I’m not) or watch vids of ppl playing it

- watch documentaries or do a deep dive on farming and all the stuff that goes with it (maybe you’re wanting to know more about tractors, or farming techniques over the years, etc.)

- if able attend a farmer’s market or look into any that are in your area you don’t necessarily need to buy anything you could just go look around (I do that regularly)

- learn about the role of a farmer and what it’s like to be a farmer (I worked on a farm for a bit in high school and while I loved it I couldn’t do it as a living it takes a very special someone to do it) and look up ways you can support them

- learn about the native plants in your area

- watch foraging videos and learn about it (how to safely do it especially, if it’s something you wish to do at some point)

- if able support local farmers by buying their products (I know here in wi it’s not uncommon for farm stands to pop up this time of year and they sell all sorts of stuff for good prices! One in my town sells the best corn and for only $1 a piece which is perfect)

- point out cows, horses, sheep, goats, etc. while going by them in the car

- learn about homesteading and watch videos about it (though I will issue a heads up that some of these folks veer into uh….’crunchy’ beliefs so just be careful I guess)

- look up recipes you’re interested in trying, try to write your own recipe, or cook something using a family recipe/you’d own recipe if able

- enjoy a fruit, vegetable, or grain/bread product! Have some toast with jelly/jam! Have a salad! A fruit cup! The fruit/veggies can be frozen as well. It’s still that fruit/veggie.

- watch a war movie, show, or documentary (plugging Band of Brothers again because there’s some examples of excellent leadership and all that)

Copyright applies only to your pattern. While a person cannot legally sell your pattern, you can not stop them or threaten them with "you do not have my permission to sell a finished item made with this pattern". And why would you even expect that? So you can make money, but the person who bought the pattern and supported you can't? Did you think you were going to make more sales of your pattern that way?

You better research copyright laws more thoroughly before you get your heart broke... like intellectual property, and the fact that you can't copyright a garment. I assure you that the garment you designed has most likely in very close similarity been designed before by someone else. Anyone who makes an item from your pattern can sell the item as long as they disclose that they didn't personally design the item, and they may not even have to do that much, especially if variations were made. You're welcome... and go fix your self-entitled Etsy listings that have that wack "warning" in them. You yourself may in fact be infringing on someone else's design with your own.

Since writing this post, I have as of the timestamp above purchased a crochet pattern on Etsy at ShopTigerCrochet. The seller states in his or her listing, the following:

Permissions: You have my permission to use this pattern to create physical pieces for yourself and your loved ones for free. - - - Well I would hope and expect that after I paid money for this pattern that I can surely make the item or some variation of it from the pattern... you know since I paid for it, otherwise what was the point of the transaction when I bought the pattern? You do not have my permission to share the pattern with others. - - - I can agree to that, since it's not my pattern to share. You do not have my permission to sell the pattern or physical creations of the ctrl top using my pattern. - - - I don't plan on selling anyone's pattern, however there is no law in the United States that says I cannot sell a garment I create using the pattern. Also if I create variations of the pattern, that becomes a new design, and there is no law stopping me from then selling MY pattern, and I can, but don't have to, credit you for being "based off of". I get it. People put a lot of work in to writing crochet and knit patterns, however your work, and your pride in it, has no authority over what someone does with a finished item he or she creates with the pattern after buying it.

Meet The Seamstress!

Quite a long while ago, a young wizard just kicked out of magic academy found themselves in desperate need of company. Their only companion was a very rag-tag old plushie that they'd had since their hatchling days, and in an effort to apply their skill, they decided to try and animate their own familiar -- and succeeded! (much to their own surprise).

The Seamstress was her wizard's beloved companion of many years, eventually joined by other familiars said wizard chose to animate- her best friend being Fidget, an articulated dragon toy. Together with her creator, Seamstress helped to make the dilapidated tower they settled in a cozy home. She loved to assist said wizard in daily tasks, and was especially fond of being a book-finder for them, trotting about the grand library and returning with one book at a time.

Eventually, the wizard found themselves in old age and at peace with the life they had led. They passed on peacefully in their dreams, and in doing so, bequeathed their tower, magic, and legacy on to their dearest companion - The Seamstress herself.

Finding herself imbued with her old creator's magic, The Seamstress strove to make a safe home within the tower for all the familiars within it. And when she found herself feeling horribly lonely as the only soft toy familiar, she pulled out an encyclopedia of dragon species, tore down some of the wizard's old cloaks, and wrangled up some of the more sapient familiars to come together... and begin the monumental task of figuring out how to work a sewing machine.

The Seamstress is the creator and unofficial leader of the Agate Wizard's Tower's band of familiars. Over the years she's made a sizeable amount of plush dragons to befriend (even if to the detriment of the wizard's old wardrobe, curtains, and pillows) and together they live in (relative) peace in their secluded little tower :>

Stuffing is among the newest of the familiars, made in the image of a hatchling to better conserve on the gang's dwindling fabric supplies. She's easily exciteable, overly curious, and not too bright at the moment-- but she's all heart inside her cotton-wool chest, and she wears it proudly on her sleeve.

Of all the familiars created by the Seamstress, Stuffing is the only one that has taken a very keen interest in her work. Unbeknownst to the rest of the familiars, The Seamstress has been finding herself at peace, just as their wizard was-- and after centuries of living and creation, wishes to pass on her mantle to another. Stuffing is currently her first and only apprentice... And, she hopes, eventually her successor.

Toy Dragons in my clan are -- I guess an open concept? Feel free to make one, though I ask that you tag me so I can see! :) My general rules for them are:

The Seamstress is the oldest of them, and the creator of all of them

Stitched primary gene

The largest among them is only about 3ft tall. Guards are usually the biggest. More recent toy familiars are usually smaller, given dwindling fabric supplies.

Naming conventions usually follow sewing, knitting, crochet, or quilting terminology (i.e. Spindle, Spool, Thread, Thimble, Yarn, etc) But also can be anything.

Most toy familiars have a crystal, jewelry piece, or trinket inside their stuffing that acts as their 'heart.'

toy familiars must periodically imbue their heart with magic by eating or absorbing magic from spells, enchanted items, or other sources, to keep themselves animated. If they lose their magic, they will fall into a stasis-like hibernation, but retain all of their memories when they are awakened.

General materials include linen, velvet, cotton, silk, with wool, cotton, or down stuffing. Pebbles occasionally added for weight upon familiar's request.

As toy familiars don't hatch, typically what happens is an existing familiar goes to The Seamstress and is like 'i would like a baby/little sibling/friend' The Seamstress then helps them create a blank little 'first body' and animates it for them. As the new familiar grows into its personality, decides what it wants, and can communicate those wants, it and its parent/sibling/whatever will build it a new body to animate together, to its liking. The Seamstress then helps them transfer to this new body with her spells. As the new familiar wishes to grow, they can add more fabric onto themselves and shape themselves to their liking -- though this practice has recently become frowned upon given the lack of supplies.

Toy familiars are welcome to leave the tower for their own adventures as well!

Hank, Sanford and Deimos with a Reader who does Handcrafts

Gonna post my old MadCom stuff since people seem interested in it! I didn't write too much back then, but I'll post it anyway and hope for some MadCom requests as well! What the title says! Reader knits, crochets and embroiders in this! The format is different from how I usually write, but that's because I wrote this months ago, if not in 2022! I don't remember when, but it's been a while since I wrote this!

Hank

If you get his attention while doing one of your crafts, expect him to just stare at you for a while. He knows what knitting is, since you can use those needles to stab someone with enough force, but he never really cared much for any of it. So, seeing you do those small, but precise movements has him somewhat curious. If you beckon him closer to check out what you’re doing, he will approach you, taking your piece from your hands and gently examining it, before returning it to you.

While he won’t join you that often due to his occupation, Hank will lie down next to you from time to time, watching you work until he falls asleep eventually. Doing so next to you, especially when you’re knitting or doing embroidery, takes a lot of trust on his behalf, so it’s a rather rare occurrence, but it might happen. Still, sometimes even Nevada’s most wanted can’t resist getting some sleep in.

If you give him a scarf or anything of the likes it might seem like he doesn’t like it at first. As he only grunts in acknowledgement and doesn’t wear it, it might seem disheartening at first glance. But rest assured, he’s well aware that him wearing it would only get it covered in blood, and he wouldn’t want your creation, that you put so much love into, to get sullied like that. Hank does keep it somewhere hidden where only he can find it so that it won’t get stolen as well, he truly does treasure anything you give him.

Sanford

He has helped his mother crocheting every once in a while when he was young by holding her wool for her. Sanford always thought it to be really cool how you can make something so beautiful out of something as simple as wool and yarn. Much like he did when he was younger, he’ll hold your yarn for you, making it more comfortable to knit or crochet for you. Unlike Hank and Deimos, he will try to learn it as well. It seems relaxing, so why not? But by no means is he a master. Due to his strength, he will likely rip the yarn and wool apart from time to time and come to you for help.

In order to relax and unwind a bit, he’ll likely come to you and ask if you would like to practise your craft for and with him. Having you around in and of itself already makes Sanford happy, but just getting to spend time with you without having to worry about being killed by the enemy makes it all the better. If you let him, he will hold you close, lean into you, put you on his lap, anything you’re comfortable with.

Please give him a sweater. Because he’s never wearing a shirt he gets cold fairly easily. He’ll cherish it dearly and wear it whenever he can, and whenever he knows it won’t get ripped. Another thing he’d be very happy with would be a piece of embroidery. It reminds him of better times and gives him hope, especially when your piece of art is something pleasant and sweet to look at. Because of that, he will put it up somewhere in his room where he can always see it. Even if Deimos makes fun of him for it, he will simply lightly jab at the smoker, all the while smiling at it.

Deimos

He’ll lovingly call you a grandma for having hobbies like these. Even while doing embroidery, where you stab things thousands of times, he will snicker at you whenever he catches you doing any of these things. Though, he doesn’t mind that sort of thing at all since that means you’ll be sitting still for a while, meaning you’ll give him a chance to unwind with him. Deimos will wrap his arms around you, leaning onto you or just cuddle into you in general. No fighting, no getting hurt, just watching you do the same movements over and over again.

Despite possibly calling you boring, he does have great respect for your craft, since he can’t do any of it. It’s too tedious and he can’t sit around for long enough doing something like this. It’s simply not exciting enough. But the moment you give him his first sweater, he will think it’s the most awesome thing to ever exist. Proud as a peacock, he will flaunt and taunt his new piece of clothing, especially to Sanford and Hank, declaring just what a great lover he has.

Present him with a plushie and his mind will be blown. He always thought knitting and crocheting are just for woolly hats and sweaters and scarves and all. If he sees you made him a tiny grunt, he will simply lose it, run around the Status Quo base and show everyone what you’re capable of. It doesn’t even matter to him whether or not it looks good. Your hands are magical to him and absolutely everyone has to know just how cool and epic you are.

━━━ he was the most nervous among his brothers concerning interacting with you when you had met for the first time. raph was terrified of scaring you off with the way he would tower over you and how you would initially avoid eye contact with him when he would try to spark up a conversation. he even avoided smiling for a while because the big guy was a lil' nervous that his fang was intimidating you.

━ donnie is probably the most reserved when it comes to his affection towards you, but when he sees you scratching your arm or nervously glancing at the ceiling frequently, he does what he can to make sure you feel alright and to soothe your nerves.

━ you are probably one of the few people he lets into his workshop willingly to roam around- the only person he doesn't quite mind that tinkers around with the unfinished inventions scattered across his desk with crumpled-up coffee cans and random sticky notes. he'll let you peek over his shoulder to admire his blueprints and ask questions as he works, even when you think he doesn't notice.

━ donatello always has the mini fridge in his workshop filled with your favorite snacks and drinks in case you happen to come in for some company. he would always give you a small shrug and claim that he just so happens to like the same refreshments you do or that the local store April stopped by only carried that kind of chips currently. it had nothing to do with you, or how he knew your eyes would light up munching on your favorite snacks. really. nothing to do with you at all.

━ "i didn't know you had these, donnie!" you murmured excitedly, the surface of your thumbs running over the bright plastic of the salty treat with a light astonishment. 

glancing over his shoulder at the sound of your voice, donatello's eyes flickered over the snack you had been gripping tightly between your hands- his furrowed expression remaining casual before turning back his attention to the burning slight sparks emitting from his project.

"oh, those old things?" he replied with a small laugh, sliding down his mismatched goggles down his face, his brow slightly quirked upwards plainly and his squinting eyes at the snack you lifted towards him, "i eat those all the time."

"really?" your head tilted at the claim, scanning all the neatly stacked snacks lined up neatly on his shelf that were organized by brand, looking almost completely untouched. "this is the first time i've ever seen you-"

━ cooking was one of the ways you both bonded with one another. mikey was determined to become your friend, even at your slight apprehension at the sudden brightness of the bumbling turtle waving his cookbooks towards you or dragging you to sketch with him.

━ he also loves drawing for you! sketches and such, he will always eagerly smile at your requests for your favorite comfort characters. he could spend hours dragging his pencil across the paper of his sketchbook, tongue cutely stuck out in concentration before flipping his eraser to clean up the fine details.

Remember literally yesterday when I mentioned I was doing a stretchy bind-off purlwise, and I loved the fluidity of it? Well, obviously a bind off pretty much heralds the end of a project in sight so here we are. I was so eager for this one to be completed that I lightly washed the shawl and pinned it overnight so that, by today, I'd have my first finished, knitted shawl.

Pattern: Mara Shawl by Madelinetosh, available here through Ravelry

Yarn: Arcane Fibre Works, "Calm Waters" -80/20 Extra Fine Merino Nylon Super Wash Fingering Weight. (2 Skeins)

Tools: Clover Takumi Bamboo Circulars - US 5 3.75mm, Eucalan Lavender Wash for blocking

This shawl is a garter stitch shawl with yarn overs down the center and sides to both increase and add a bit of lacy interest. I had actually started on this before I finished the throw blanket, so these two pieces together were so critical for my knitting journey thus far, and I've learned so much already.

While the throw maintained the upward structure of its rows, this shawl gave me the experience of increasing along the center and sides, working outward as well as up. Once I figured out the yarn-over and the cadence from row to row, the location of the yarn-overs was easy to remember. Simple, but elegant on the piece. It did take me a few rows in to figure out that a stitch marker for the RS vs WS would probably be helpful, and from there it was smooth sailing.

Almost too smooth, because I just kept going. I don't remember the cord size I used, but eventually working the stitches scrunched up on the needles, and the work curled into itself. Once that started, I had a hard time imagining what it would look like finished. I had no idea what the shaping would look like once it was off the needles, so my plan was to hope I just figured out when would be a good time to stop. Low stakes winging it, if you will.

She's big. This is no shawlette you behold. The length surpasses my wingspan on both sides, and the drape down the back is lovely and full while the fabric itself is light and breathable between the stitches. I think because the needles were a bit bigger than recommended size for fingering weight, this resulted in some space between the stitches.

I'm dreaming of that first cool day of fall, and wrapping myself up with her covering my shoulders pinned with a nice brooch, or rolled into a scarf around my neck over denim. She's going to be a wonderful addition to my wardrobe, and I am ecstatic with the final length and look.

I mentioned above I used two skeins. Another learning curve for me - one I intentionally played with here - was the way the colors fell. I don't think it's a crochet thing specifically because I know opinions still vary, but coming from a craft that tends to create potentially less ordered fabrics with variegated yarns, I'm kind of open to color pooling at times. It's not for everyone, but I think there's a fun little magic in letting the colors land the way they want to in both crafts it seems.

I started with one skein, then switched to alternating after a while to learn that technique, then ended with one skein again as I finished out the project. I was nervous about this choice, especially as I started seeing entire blocks of yellow forming. But in the final garment, I don't feel like these larger streaks take away from the color combination. I'm loving that it's not uniform and there's a bit of fun and randomness to how the colors fall.

Towards the final rows, the pattern switched from garter to 1x1, then 2x2 ribbing, which I could see being a great opportunity to switch out to another color to complement. But I really wanted to have my yellow and green shawl, so I decided to keep working up with the same yarn. Plus I am kind of in love with seeing how different stitches create a new texture that gives the colors in a variegated yarn a bit of a different life to them.

Now - I do have one more skein of this colorway, as I had bought a just-in-case extra. I am thinking my big shawl needs a little something else to go with it - maybe a hat or some fingerless gloves, oooh! or some socks.

Now, I have... how many more months till I can wear this?

but then one day you appear with a tiny crochet Sam, a little voodoo themed just to follow the joke.

But he's dead serious.

"huh? i finished it yesterday...?"

"You shouldn't be doing things like this, little trickster."

You may hate how it sounds when Rook says it but hearing it from Sam right now in such a threatening tone. chills.

"Sure you didn't even poke it a little? you didn't play with it right?"

You shake your head , nervous as hell 😭

And with that he laughs and tells you that he's just joking, he knows you can't even use magic to begin with.

But from now on he also keeps mini Sam around, yk, to keep him company in the store.

Ralph has always been able to get the newest and most expensive gifts his whole life

It was always given to him more so as a replacement for actual love from his parents, and though he always appreciated his gifts it just never felt like enough to him

All he’s ever wanted was for someone to gift him something that was meaningful, something that really showed that someone cared for him

And was lucky enough to get you as a partner

No matter what skill you have, it brings him to tears each and every time you give him something that you personally made just for him

Writing? He adores getting to be the proofreader for everything you write.

Knitting/Crocheting? When he gets sweaters and gloves and scarves every winter he’s nearly brought to tears.

Painting/Drawing? Wether you think it’s a good piece or not, he’s kept every one of them and put them all over the walls of the manor.

Every little thing you could do he’s just so fascinated by all the work and effort you put into them

And he feels a little bad for not really having a hobby of his own to give gifts to you

He plays his ukulele from time to time and every now and then he’ll have a funny little song that he’ll sing to you, but it’s not really something he’s passionate about

He wants something that he can do that really let’s him express his creativity

He adores watching you when you do all your fun little activities, especially when you let him help you with them

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is a Reverse Big Bang? A: A reverse big bang is an event where authors and artists collaborate with one another. The way it works is that people sign up to be an author and/or an artist. Then we have the authors pick their favorite art piece and we pair them with the proper artists. The pairings work together to create a story for the artwork it’s inspired by.  

Q: What kind of art can I create to participate in this bang as an artist? A: Art can be created using any medium that you like.  All we ask is that it can be recorded and shared so that authors can preview it before claims.  

Q: Are there specific characters that I need to include in my art in order to be eligible to submit it for the bang? A: So long as the art features at least one character that is featured in the Stranger Things show, it is eligible.

Q:  How long do stories need to be in order to be eligible for the bang? A: We are only asking that stories be a minimum of 3k words.   There is no maximum word count.  

Q:  What is a beta reader? A: Betas are people who will read a story and give constructive feedback to the author before they post. Most betas specialize in certain things, like SPAG (grammar), characterization, emotional flow, alpha readers (those who read to make sure it all works, mostly plot-conscious) research, or pickers. Pickers are people who are experts in particular fields (ex. Medical pickers could be those who have been in medical school and can help you create a realistic scene or offer advice in that department).    

Q: Do stories need to be beta read? A: Yes.  You are welcome to use your own beta or reach out to someone in the bang.  

Q: What is a pinch hitter? A:  Pinch Hitters are authors who step in when someone has to drop out. There are a lot of unknown variables in a big bang, especially with the lengthy schedule. It’s hard to plan ahead when you’re not sure what your workload will be, which makes it hard to stay in the bang. Authors sometimes can’t keep their initial workload and would have to drop out of the bang. It happens. That’s where pinch hitters come in, to take over the abandoned art.    

Q: Does my art have to be completed prior to claims? A: We ask that art be about 50% complete prior to your submission for claims.  We understand that creating art is no easy feat, we just ask that there is enough of the process completed so that authors can have a clear idea of what they’re claiming.

30 Days of Writing, Drawing, and Creation in general to celebrate, here's the official annoucement for Blanktember!

This isn't the first event by far that the Blankshipping community has taken part in, but after seeing all the general Submas events I decided to do one just for us! Especially for those who are too shy or uneasy to participate in the general fandom events!

As we get closer to the day I'll be releasing a more specific calender that gives a specific prompt for each day for those who wish to do something, but to make it easier and lighter on people since school will be starting back up, this event will also have weekly themes to write for!

You can write/draw (or even crochet, knit, make a video, podcast, whatever you want!) a piece for every day or you can do just whatever you want for that week, but these will be the four main themes! (Based off some of the more popular AUs and Tropes that our little fandom corner has to offer.)

Feel free to share this, pass it around, and send in suggestions for daily prompts (all of which will match the weekly theme).

Until then, I can't wait to see all the creations that you choose to do and I hope we can continue to have a good time writing for these nerds!
