I'm probably never going to see the final special stage in Super Mario Wonder because that second 'Jump, Jump, Jump' stage is my Desert Campaign; I can't...

I turn 30 in less than 4 hours here is some wisdom I know as an ‘old’ person:
Tattoos should be treated like tree rings. They can be super meaningful or meaningful for a moment. They’re supposed to show where you have been (I don’t listen to the band I loved in high school, but I love the tattoo I got of them anyway)
Make a point to say yes to a plan someone else made once a week or once a month. Yes, sometimes you’re tired or more likely, anxious about going out. Guess what, anxiety is sometimes just anxiety. Sometimes it’s just having a loud ass dinner in a Greek bar with your best friend before you eat an ouzo soaked pineapple.
When you’re on vacation, try one new food a day. My mom taught me this one. Tell everyone you’re with you’re trying one new food a day. If you have the opportunity to get outside of your bubble, make it count. Nothing bad will happen if you don’t like the food. You’re making the effort to try something new and people will appreciate it.
If you’re stuck at a networking/work event: ask people about the first R rated movie they saw. Yes, weird question, but you learn so many cool things about the lives people have led. If you’re nervous about meeting new people, this is the way to do it. I remember every answer I’ve ever gotten and people ask me about it all the time.
Watch dumb movies as often as you watch good movies. You need both because they serve different purposes. Like them both. There’s a time to think and be introspective and a time to goof on a film.
Don’t forget to give a hug and say ‘I Love You.’ Maybe this is the midwest in me (“tell your folks I said hi!”) but I love knowing that when I leave family and friends, they always know I love them. Is it corny? Sure. Is it lame? What the fuck ever. I would rather be lame and loved any day.
Be okay with your own failings. Appreciate others filling the gaps in your knowledge. Be happy with being an amateur. Every day you get to wake up and learn something new. Even if it’s just a Snapple fact or something about yourself.
Make mistakes with everything you do. In knitting, the folklore is that you need to have at least one mistake in every garment, otherwise a demon will become trapped in a perfect maze of stitches. Don’t curse the people you care about. Make mistakes.
So much stuff you think matters when you’re 16, 18, 21, 25, etc, really doesn’t. It’s okay if you feel like it does, because I remember being that age and feeling like “I will cause the world to end because I am making bad choices.” But the good thing about being that age is that eventually you get older. You get wiser. You learn to make mistakes better. And, if you can, you can laugh at yourself. Feelings are just that, feelings. They can take you over, but they’re never meant to be permanent.
Be okay with getting old. Go to sleep early. Rise with the sun. Make weird sounds when you stand up. It is a gift to get old. Make it count. Remind people life is more than being 21 on instagram. Appreciate the age you reach.

Yall wanna hear a kinda funny, kinda sad story about my grandmother and hetero-normativity?
Ok, so... when my grandmother was in her 50s (I was an infant), she met a woman at the Unitarian Church. And, as can happen when you meet your soul mate, this event made it impossible for her to deny parts of herself that she had fiercely hidden her whole life.
All the drama- their affair being found out, the divorce with my grandfather, the court battle over who got the house, happened while I was a baby. Even in my earliest memories, it's just Mama Jo and Oma, and my grandfather lived elsewhere (first his own apartment, then a nursing home, then with us.)
But here's the thing- no one ever explained any of this to me. No one ever sat down and was like "hey, Rosie, so do you know what a lesbian is?" It was the 90s. It was Texas. I think my mom was still kinda processing all this, and just assumed that like... I was gonna figure it out. Don't mention it, let it just be normal. Like I think my mom thought that if she explained the situation, she would be making it weird? I dunno.
But like. In the 90s, in all the movies I had seen and books I had read, do you know how many same sex couples I had seen? Like. 0. Do you know how many "platonic best friend/roommates" I had seen? A lot. I had no context, is what I'm saying.
I literally thought this was a Golden Girls, roommates, besties situation until I was like...I dunno, 11? 12?
It was actually their parrot, an African Grey named Spike, imitating my grandmothers voice saying "Johanna, honey, it's getting late", that triggered the MIND BLOWN moment as I realized that *there's only one master bedroom and it only has 1 waterbed* when all the pieces finally clicked.
Anyway. I think it's a real important thing for kids to know queer people exist, for a lot of reasons, but also because kids can be clueless and it's embarrassing to have your grandmother be outted by a parrot because everyone just thought you'd figure it out on your own.

Anyway, here is my grandma and her wife, my Oma, after they moved to Albuquerque to be artsy gay cowboys and live their best life. They helped run a "Lesbian Dude Ranch" out there (basically just with funding and financial support. As Oma has explained "traditionally, most lesbians don't have a lot of money" so they wrote the checks and let the younger ladies actually run the ranch.)

She probably helped that girl solve her teen sexuality dilemma anyway, because if that were me and I asked an adult for advice only to find out the adult’s not only worse off than me but also the dumbest person alive, I’d accept the lesbianism just to get out of the awkward situation...

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.
But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.
